Very happy with my purchase and very quite on sleep mode.
I bought this to run at home during the Covid Pandemic to help with air filtration by HEPA filter. I use this filter along with good ventilation to try and do my best to mitigate the risks. The u it is easy to operate and very easy to move from room to room. I use it when we have the odd visitor over, it is better to try and provide many mitigation’s at this time.
Easy to move from room to room.
Quiet in operatio
I bought this for a bedroom. Not too large and being white it doesn’t stand out. Light on top is blue when air quality fine, then goes through purple to red (with increasing fan/noise) if it detects dust in the room. No problem sleeping as it is almost silent – though possibly the blue light might disturb some people. Overall I am very pleased with it. Seems good value, delivering the same service as other very well known but much more expensive products.
Peoduct: Philips Series 800 air purifier
Purchased on: Jan 2021 on Amazon Spain
Price: 104 (machine) + 1x 13 (replacement filter)
UK price as of review: 151 + 22
Tips: long press the LED button to reset (filter) warnings. I added felt stickers underneath so that the plastic bottom does not scratch my wooden floor or create (vibration) noise.
PROs
+ Gets the job done
+ Easy to clean chassis and supplied filter
+ Fast startup and shutdown
+ Behaves well in auto mode
+ Straight forward use
+ Relarively robust and simple electronics should allow the device to last 5+ years
+ included filter can be vacuumed from outside and lasts 12-18 months
+ No anoying beeping or noise apart from whoosh fan sound
– unil Jan 2022 there are random sales down to 99
CONs
– Thanks to primarily Brexit (man resellers don’t sell to UK customers) and Covid supply chain issues, prices of this and all other imported goods have skyrocketed by 30-50%
– Unintuitive LED colour coding (good to bad): blue, purple, pink, red. Better (good to dangerous): green, yellow, orange, red, pulsating purple in line with other air quality apps such as AirCare iQAir
– Proprietary power connector. USB C would have been more useful
– Short, thin 1.8 metre cable (my cat will chew through it)
– Difficult to lift with 1 hand if you want to quickly vacuum underneath it
– Filter replacement warning way too early: these filters can run 18 months in a normal household and 12 months in polluted places like London or busy roads (long press LED button to reset)
I have the feeling that there is more dust in the room when using it.
This product has been running for 3 weeks now in a room approximately 20’by20′. I don’t use the night mode as when using the auto mode it is very quiet l purchased to assist with the amount of dust, it has helped but not as well as l was hoping. However you do notice the clean air as you walk into the room.
This product is classed as being ‘compact’ l suppose in comparison to a wall mounted or floor unit it is. However this unit stands at 15″ width circumference is 32″. So careful consideration is needed to decide where it will be best suited.
I’m happy to recommend this product. Why not try it and see you have 4 weeks return policy (correct at time of writing)should it not be your cup of tea.
Great little machine noy only does it purify the air but as soon as it detects a spray of hairspray or deodorant it go’s like the clappers to remove dust in the house is less as well so bonus
Perfect air control for our living room, quiet and easy to move to different sites. Improving air quality as frequent visits from school age grandchildren and getting a bit chilly in the garden. Filter vacuums clean after every two weeks. Easily done and reassembled.
The purifier is quiet, easy to use and light to move. The high mode dims the led too.
Only complaint is the touch button is basically a sticker or stuck on so if you press hard it’ll flip off, but can easily stick back on. Got this cos one of the little ones got asthma so this was ideal to clean the air which it does a good job off.
For years I’ve suffered with sinusitis & waking up with a stuffy nose & headaches. This lifesaver has changed my symptoms for the better. The first night I had a great sleep & when I woke up I had a clear nose & clear sinuses. I’ve had it a few weeks now & it’s been great every night/morning. Wish I’d bought it during hayfever season. It’s very quiet also when it’s purring away. I love the different colour lights so you can tell if your room is manky or not, red for bad (this can happen even when I’m shaking the duvet near it so it really works & it really sucks all the dust in) I just love it & would recommend it 100% 🙂
Cleans the air and you can tell a noticeable difference from when the machine is turned on or off (air quality wise). I have this off when I’m sleeping as I am a light sleeper. But this works its charm throughout the day!
Sleep mode I’ve gotten used to, light weight, easy to move, easy to clean if you keep instructions
Great product it’s silent, but the power cable will be turned off with the slightest movement or knock. After one year of usaged and struggling cable it stopped working.
So far so very good. Easy to set up and all functions are easily accessible. In sleep mode the machine is practically silent, a great feature.
I used a spray in my lounge and the machine automatically detected it and when into auto mode to clear.
Work as described. It seems to help with the allergy. Very happy with my purchase
Virtually silent in normal mode let alone sleep mode!!
I usually have it on overnight and it does give me a better sleep
Worth a punt at just under a 100
Best thing ever does what supposed almost no noise cleans air collecting dust very happy recommend
This has saved me from hay fever season. Can’t live without it in the night.
So, I’m really happy with this product, best choice I’ve made in years! My first night sleeping breathing well without any blocks due my dust allergic rhinitis, fantastic!
The unit was leather than expected, but it’s not too heavy so can be manoeuvred still. Sleep mode is great, really quiet, quiet enough that the unit is next to my side of the bed all night.
I purchased this to “clean” the air of smells, and pollen etc.
What I’m most impressed with is the amount of dust it collects – I hoover the surface of the filter every 2 weeks and I’m amazed at how much has collected and have definitely noticed a reduction of dust settling on surfaces.
It claims to absorb gases and odours, but as the filter does not contain activated carbon (which is a shame) it isn’t the best for eliminating odours.
On auto mode it kicks up speed when it detects a reduction in air quality, for example cooking smoke/ smells.
It was larger than anticipated, the base width wider than the top – but looks and feels a quality machine.
It claims the filters last up to 12 months which after researching others appears to be a good length of time in comparison which makes it good value for money.
If the filters had carbon I would give it 5 stars – perhaps Phillips could include this in their future filter manufacture for this machine?
This review is for the Philips Series 800 Compact. I bought these because I thought it may help with the pollutants in the air. I live by a road and it can create a lot of dust (even with the windows shut) so I wanted something to help with that.
To note the purifier is much bigger than I thought it would be, which I’m glad about because it feels like you’re getting more for your money lol Plus, cover a larger area. I’ll take some photos so you can see it stood next to things so you can get the idea of size.
It has 3 functions, which are Auto: So this is when the fan is permanently on and ready to deal with any issues in the air. I have this setting on most of the time because you can just leave it and let it clean the air when it detects pollutants. The only time I turn this off and onto ‘Sleep’, is when I’m in bed and the fan is in my room because it can be quite loud and you can feel the cool air, so it’s not the best to be close to it in the chilly months lol It will be a godsend in summer though! Sleep is when it’s the quietest, you can barely hear it at all unless you put your head to it. I’m presuming it’s slowly cleaning the air? It’s the only thing I’m not sure of. I’m sure it’s doing something otherwise you would just switch it off with the button on the back. The other mode is ‘Turbo’, and sounds turbo too lol This is when the fan is on full pelt and is working to clear the room of pollutants in around 15 minutes. I never use this one because just leaving it on auto mode will do the same when it needs to.
Theres a little light ring on the top of the unit and it changes colour based on the quality of air:
Blue for Good. Purple for Fair. Pink for Poor. Red for Very Poor. You can see them changing based on what you are doing. I lit a cigarette in one room and less than a minute later the fan came on in the hall, which I thought was brilliant because it was so quick and we weren’t in the same room! This is one of my reasons for the five stars. The other reasons are for the simple fact the filters are so easy to take out and brush clean, the fact that they collect a crazy amount of dust, air particles because you can literally brush it off to form a clump, it’s brilliant to see that amount being taken out of the air. I’ve had less dust from the roads while these fans have been on (I bought two for different areas, and would like one in each room lol). I was going to buy the Dyson air purifier but was put completely off by how much the filters were to replace each year, 60 each! Where as the Phillips replacements are only 10-15 per year so that’s another reason why I bought a second and spent what I had on two purifiers cheaper to run than one small Dyson costing 60 per year. The saving is definitely worth it, especially now I’ve seen how much dust and irritants they take out of the air. I’ve took some photos to show you, this is from the filter that’s half way to cleaning. When you clean it after the month, it’s FULL of dust and dirt. You just brush the filter with a dustpan and brush and pop it back in it’s so easy. I’d definitely buy more in the future. Hope my review has helped someone anyway 🙂
Very pleased with our Philips air purifier, seems to be doing a good job, choose this one mainly because of the long lasting filters
Very impressed with this. The noise level on sleep mode is so low that you really can’t hear it. The first time I used it I woke up with clear breathing for the first time ever.
Great little air purifier that I bought for the bedroom to help relieve hayfever symptoms.
On night mode, it is very quiet and I had no problems sleeping with it switched on all night (I wake up at the slightest noise). It has helped drastically with my hayfever symptoms.
The purifier is very sensitive. If it is on the floor like mine, walking past it will trigger the sensor and set it to go at a higher speed as I presume dust in the floor gets sucked in. After a couple of minutes, it settles back down to normal, so it is reassuring that the sensor is working correctly.
Some people claim that it is difficult to buy replacement filters. I found several online (including on Amazon) for a reasonable price, around 20. It states in the manual that you should vacuum the filter regularly, so this should prolong the filter life and prevent the need to change regularly.
Keep this next to the work computer as the dogs do bring in lots of dust and fluff. It’s sensitive! Turns on and goes to red as soon as you open the back door lol. If feels there is less fluff on the computer filter so I’m happy
Never owned an air purifier before. Own a lot of figures and tat which is a pain to dust regularly, so I got it hoping it will mean less dusting. It’s doing the job. A lot more sensitive than I thought. Walking to and from another room can make it go from blue (clean air) to red (impure) fairly quickly. As I said, first experience with these things, can’t give any comparisons or past experiences. It’s working for me.
This is a lovely compact air purifier that fits nicely into any space. It works really well and is not noisy. I am very pleased with this purchase.
After over year deciding whether to get a purifer and budget less than 150 plus wanting a brand, SETTLED for this.
Had for 6 days in total, used in a smallish bedroom and virtually nothing first 12 hours over night.
It’s very very localised, to get dust seen in image I used an oscillating fan to help move air around as open window not enough. Pic is 4 days worth.
Touch button is awful.
Sleep mode is good no worse than TV standby hum. Highest setting louder than my 20yr old fans highest setting and moves less air .
If your looking for something that effects odours this isn’t designed for that.
Phillips offer 2yrs guarantee if you go to there website apparently.
Does a great job. Very sensitive and responsive to changes in the air quality
I purchased this for a better nights sleep during hay fever season and so far it seems to be doing the job. The sleep mode is very quiet and overall I feel better in the mornings than I did before I started to use the purifier. It’s not a miracle cure but every little helps if you suffer like I do.
Great bit of kit esp at the price. Super simple, almost too simple. But then what more do you need? Some clunky stupid app that doesn’t work like most of the other ones in this cat. Highly recommend. The noise is low, almost soothing if you’re into that kind of thing
Very happy. Easy to move. Will be taking on holiday this summer to a cottage
Perfect for my requirements. Does a no nonsense job. And just incase you have reservations, yes these things do actually work!
We looked at a lot of options before buying this product as didn’t want to spend a lot, however, didn’t want an over expensive fan that didn’t really do anything more.
This is lightweight – Can easily be moved around the house.
Easy to use, plug and go
Has an automatic sensor so turns itself up when it detects a smell or bad air quality, have noticed it cleans the air in terms of smells.
Haven’t really tested this during my heyfever season, however do notice a difference in the room when we forget to plug it in for a few days so would say it’s doing something
All in all, would recommend good, small, light weight and does the job without spending a fortune
I use it to get ride of the vape in my air and just general air cleaning and its grea
Has really helped me with my dog allergy. Would really recommend to anyone who is struggling. I usually wake up with a snuffy nose but this has massively reduced since using this.
Automatically senses air quality well. Bought to remove smell from litter tray, and it does improve the smell, but does not eradicate it entirely. Senses when we are cooking in another room and works well to improve air quality.
Best device we have found so far as it cleans the air and is quiet. It does not disturb conversation or listening and watching the grandchildre
In sleep mode is really silent in general the noise level is very low.
Very simple to use.
We like to play safe in our office. So not only did we keep 2M distance, not only did we put a screen in between staff, not only did we put hand sanitiser on each desk but we went even further. We got a AIR PURIFIER for the office which removed COVID19 Airborne Virus Droplets so if someone did release some into the office then this machine will quickly remove them. Dont risk it folks, get one of these little machines. It even automatically goes into BOOST most when it detects the air isnt as clean as it should be. Well worth the money. 5 Stars from me. Nigel.
I took quite a long time debating, googling and researching and too be honest, we’re dealing with such micro particles here it’s tricky (out of a laboratory) to actually work out what’s going on.
Pros:
– deadly silent on sleep mode (amazing)
Nice to know it’s still doing it’s thing at night despite being ultra quiet.
– powerful on ‘turbo mode’
I use this after arranging cushions, folding throws, pulling curtains open and closed etc.
– reactive on auto mode
I use this regularly day to day and it reacts to aerosol sprays, cooking, people walking past etc – nice peace of mind that the air is being purified as the environment adjusts around it.
– A definite reduction in dust on surfaces. I suppose, as it’s really just a low powered vacuum that’s constantly turned on… the day to day dust that would usually settle on surfaces in the home are just sucked into the Air Purifier. Too be honest, it’s worth it for this alone! I have a lot of glass surfaces and it’s a dream not to have to wipe them down every day!!
Cons:
– it’s fairly big but it’s got a lot to do and I suppose you can’t really expect to capture too much rubbish in the air with something too small
– it’s a big white eyesore and we tried really hard to put it somewhere where it’s not instantly seen. Obviously in the Phillips marketing and advertising land it gently and beautifully sits aside your stunning leather sofa looking fabulous and cleansing the air in your grand designs glass cube home in the Forrest – but that’s not reality, that’s advertising. So maybe something to consider if your OCD about visuals!
– not entirely sure what purified air is or why it’s better than non purified air … I mean … I get it … but hard to tell if it actually makes a difference to the air that I breathe.
All in all, I’m here for it, but maybe that’s just so I can be a notch above the rest … living in my purified air bubble in a global pandemic. Who knows!
I have this on 24/7, in normal mode during the day and sleep mode overnight. It does a great job, I checked the filter after two weeks and I could hardly believe my eyes, the amount of dust it caught was massive. Definitely worth getting one if you live in a big city.
Can tell the difference in the air immediately.
Feels fresh when I enter the bedroom.
Device was larger than I expected from the images. Look at its dimensions before ordering.
I’ve spent a while (maybe too long) researching air purifiers for my bedroom to stop dust/hayfever etc. Having owned a similarly priced purifier (Blueair411) I went to through faulty units before looking elsewhere. Initial reviews of loose plugs etc put me off this model but only since I received it can I say this is the one to go for! The colour light instantly shows you the quality of the air in the bedroom, there’s no sightly layer of dust on the outside (like the previous one I had) that needs removed every so often and the sleep mode dims the light (the other one stays quite illuminated) and leaves you with background air purification whilst you sleep. It’s easy to forget it’s on.
This is the one to go for. 5/5!
I LOVE this air purifier. Noticeable difference to the room’s air quality and it has a great feature in that it detects the air quality and adjusts its fan speed based on it; this can also be overridden. Sleep mode is quiet enough.
Thinking of purchasing more of these for other rooms in my house! Must buy.
So far so good. Usual for me to suffer with rhinitis when bad weather means I spend more time indoors than I would like. I’ve bought 2 of these and (touch wood) I’ve remained free of congestion ever since. Much better sleeping, nice to be able to taste my food and nice to be able to talk without sounding like I’ve got an horrendous cold. The sensor is a great feature – it’s unbelievable how it detects the smallest increase in airborne particles and adjusts the filter accordingly.
Great product. Quietly cleans and purifies the air leaving me free of any allergic air bound irritants that I am very sensitive . It was so good we bought a second.
Very easy to use. Like the colour change indicator on top to show when the room is clear of particles. It is quiet enough not to notice above other sounds in the room. Good price from Amazon compared to some other retailers.
Wish it had a timer function so it could go on max during the nigh
A combination of cold weather and staying indoors all the time meant I was suffering horrendous allergies over Christmas, nose streaming all day, who knows why but I bought this in desperation.
Well since I switched it on, I haven’t had any uncontrollable sneezing or streaming, in fact I would say I have sneezed three times since I put this on.
It detects the air quality and steps up the power accordingly, so red is the worst air quality and will trigger the strongest filtering. I wondered if this was just a gimmick, but soon after switching it on, our dog went crazy running round the room, and the machine went straight into red mode, so it seems to be accurately detecting when dust and such get thrown up into the air.
On red it’s pretty loud, but the other two levels are very quiet, and the sleep mode even more so. Can’t hear it even in the night-time silence.
Long may it last!! Fingers crossed
Brilliant air purifier. Excellent 360 degrees of purification means that you don’t need to position it in any particular way. After a month of using it, I cleaned the filter and found a thin layer of dust coating all of the filter which means that it does certainly work! Can also put the filter on a quiet mode.
bought for my daughter who was using anti histamines almost daily for her bedroom due to cat hair allergy & other issues with dust, asthma etc
she has had 1 dose in last month. she has really benefitted from this device.
only but is it is bigger than we expected, but it DOES WORK so we can live with this
For me this is exactly what I want for my bedroom. I like it so much that I am just about to buy another for my study so that I don’t need to carry one backwards and forwards. It doesn’t bother me at all at night and, having got used to a much larger one downstairs, I actually find that any noise it does make hardly registers with me. I like it being round.
Short review. This really does help with my asthma and alleges. I placed it in the main bedroom and run it for a few mins before I got to bed and the result was noticeable from the first time I used it. Note The sleep mode is not that quiet.
Helps keep the air clean and gives me some peace of mind that the air in the room is being cleaned and cleared regularly. In clinic it reduced time for airing between clients and makes the air feel better! At night at home it reduces smoke in the room from my open fire and allergens from the cat.
Absolutely worth it!
I’ve got a pretty small bedroom, so wanted a compact air purifier with air quality monitoring that would automatically ramp up and down the fan as needed. This air purifier fits the bill perfectly, I’ve noticed a big reduction in the amount of dust in my room.
On sleep mode, the unit is barely audible. Turbo mode is quite loud – as to be expected. After the first few days, the unit barely kicks in to turbo mode as it is effectively maintaining the dust and particle levels in my 9sqm room.
A lot of purifiers in this price range don’t have an air quality monitor or such a nice design hence my decision to choose this unit. It feels high quality and blends nicely into my room.
The only negatives are that it doesn’t have a carbon filter (which I was aware of, but it wasn’t important to me), and it would be nice if it had some rudimentary way to automatically switch to night mode (light sensor?).
My initial impressions of this purifier is good. It is very quiet, and maybe it’s just placebo effect but the room feels fresher and my asthma does appear to have improved over the 5 days it’s been on. We don’t even bother with the sleep mode, we just leave it on auto and it hasn’t disturbed us once, it’s incredibly quiet even when it detects particles in the air and ramps up the fan. I’m not bothered by the light on top. The sleep mode dims the light and makes operation silent for those easily disturbed by sound and light. My only real concern was availability of filters say a year down the line but it appears they’re readily available at the moment (not on Amazon though that I have been able to find) so I might make an investment in a few to futureproof it.
The particle sensor seems to work very well, if you ruffle the curtains or the dog scratches in the room within about 30 seconds the light changes colour and the fan speeds up.
It doesn’t seem to be using a lot of electricity either which is a bonus, I was concerned it would be power hungry but I’m not noticing a jump in our usage.
After just 1m of use in baby room, the boy stopped coughing completely at night and sleeps longer. Its been around 6m since purchase and a red light came on top, I removed the filter and it was covered in a fine layer of dust all round. It can get noisy when it gets pumping but nothing too loud. 3 settings and good indicator of quality. Simple, easy to use and clean and very impressive machine. Happy with this as it seems to work for sure!
!UPDATE! Just replaced the filter and well…see for yourself!! And yes the mesh was dirty, I couldn’t be bothered to hoover it off before binning it!
What a great little bit of kit! Currently use this in our bedroom and really does make the air feel fresh. Works superbly to remove pollen and as a mild hay fever suffer this really helps! Impressive how sensitive the product is too, if the bedroom door is opened for more than 10-15 seconds it starts going into meltdown about the poor air quality on the landing! Should say that on its lowest fan speed it is barely detectable and with it in night mode, the lights dim down nicely and the fan always operates on its lowest speed. Will be buying more for the rest of the house!
Bought from Philips directly with discount in July. Bigger than i thought (shaped like a mini dalek) but very light to move around.
Seems the air in my flat isn’t as bad i thought (i live in built up zone 2 London) as doesnt resort to high levels mode most times i switch it on.
Soothing at night and not particularly noisy. Remember it is not an air con machine. And use with windows shut. I trust the brand which is why i didnt opt for the popular American device.
I got this for a bedroom. It says suitable for small rooms but the 49 sq. m spec would be a big bedroom by UK standards.
Unscrew the base to liberate the filter from its sealed bag first. I had no issues with that or with the power connection. Usability is very well thought out as there is just one button to change mode, and a light which changes colour depending on air quality. No “apps” or wi-fi connection required, thank goodness!
Sleep Mode is audible to me but quiet enough not disturb my sleep. Auto Mode is very clever and the sensor is sensitive. I did some dusting and within seconds the light turned red and the fan whooshed until the dust had gone. Didn’t take long. Dog charging around triggered a purple light and again a higher fan speed for a few minutes.
Philips are not always the cheapest, or have the most features, but you get a 2 year warranty and they are a reliable, established brand. I expect they will be around selling spare filters for years to come.
DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN CLEARS THE AIR OF POLLEN
Great product really easy to use and seems to work well early days but has helped son with hay fever get a better nights sleep. We switch it on a few hours before he goes to bed then switch it off for the nigh
An easy to use, effective piece of equipment that performs well with 3 settings. Sleep mode very quiet. The item is about the size of a small office bin. Not cheap but not the most expensive by a long chalk.
Very happy with this, the sleep mode is very quite. My (my wife’s) only gripe is that the led backlit control button does not reduce enough at night and provides a soft glow, which annoys her. An LCD would have been better. An observation I have is that the unit is larger than I imagined prior to perching it, shows have read the full specification.
Great air purifier, auto mode detects pollutants and increase the air flow to remove more contaminants.
Nigh time mode is very quiets and dims the lights
Nice and compact, makes the air in the room noticeably more pleasant, very quiet even on turbo mode. Really can notice the difference once its been running for a little while.
As an Asthma sufferer, this filter has made a huge difference. A little pricey but I went for a brand I trust as people do, but glad I did. Setup in under a minute and problem free with 3 easy modes. Only bought one so need to move it from room to room from day to night but not much trouble really. When I have a little spare cash I will buy another.
Ref the plug thing, someone posted a flaw criticism where it sticks out, mine was fine, no obvious problem.
Excellent build quality (expensive)! 4-month usage, So far so good!
But really recommend the manufacturer to strengthen the connection between the button, charging jacket (and its back panel) and the purifier body, I had to superglue the two after pushing the charger too hard!
Remember to remove sealed packaging from the internal filter inside the machine !!!!!
What a breath of fresh air – this is Superb produc
Larger than expected (about knee height).
Works well.
Looks just like Totoro.
Works wonders in clearing the air, has helped breathing in the home. Works best with small-medium room. Easy to use and just needs regular cleaning to keep working at high capacity.
I have been living with 2 of the larger 2000 series purifiers for the best part of two years now. Having tried several brands, and finding Philips by far the best, I didn’t hesitate to add this smaller one to our home office, now that my wife has joined me in working from home full time.
Yes, Philips products attract a premium price, but it is simply a better quality product in terms of purification power. Having compared other brands in real world conditions (including Bionaire and Levoit, which are common lower cost options on Amazon) using an air quality sensor, Philips is significantly better. Not only that, but the Philips units have not broken (*cough* Levoit *cough*) even though they have been running 24/7 for a couple of years.
You might read other reviews complaining they are made of plastic, which is entirely true, but the mechanical components haven’t even developed so much as a rattle in 2 years. Also, I personally find the plastic soooo much easier to clean than the “stylish” brands with fabric covers – a quick wipe with some kitchen or bathroom cleaner, and it looks as white and clean as it did from the box. Very helpful for homes with children that are partial to using crayons, or with dogs that are muddy.
This unit does not have as many features as the larger brothers. But then it costs less than half as much, and is about a third of the size. You don’t get a digital readout from the air quality sensor of the particle count, only a colour indicator. And you don’t get as many speed options, but if you are using it in a small space you want it to stay quiet anyway. The main feature you don’t get, which you do on the larger units, is the wifi connection to the app. And I don’t know why. Would be 5 stars if they added it.
I mainly use it at night on the night time setting (this does seem to get a bit noisier over time, but not enough to prevent me sleeping). I have to say that the quality of my sleep is noticeably better with this thing running. Something to do with breathing, but I’m not sure what exactly.
Cheap replacement filter too (20 on amazon).
Its the first time i get a purifier. Although the product is very well designed i am not sure it can make any real difference. It runs most of the day and still never able to clean the air completely according to its sensor. I have it for only 3 days now so i ll wait a while before final review. Overall can say i saw much difference.
his air purifier has made a difference to my comfort at night in particular – sleep very soundly now and wake up unblocked!
We have this purifier set-up in our bedroom and it gets a stern test from the environment, with a hardwood floor the room is quite prone to dust and I have to say that the AC0820 has done a decent job of keeping this under control. The device is described as “compact” and to be fair its footprint is around a foot across so it isn’t huge, but it is reasonably tall and decked out in white you can’t miss it.
In operation, the purifier displays a light on top indicating the air quality (blue for good, through purple and into red for poor) around a simple touch button to change between the three operating modes: Sleep, Auto and Turbo. There’s also a power switch on the side and that’s it for controls. It is brilliantly simple and Philips have done really well keeping it so easy to use. Left in automatic mode, the unit does hum along quite a bit (you know its on) and in the dark the status light on top is pretty bright. When detected, any dust or other particles can cause the purifier to switch gears into Turbo mode, which is very noisy and can go on for a surprisingly long time before calming down again.
Wen you go to bed, you can select Sleep mode to engage the machine in its quietest setting with a subdued light on top. It’s not silent and takes a little getting used to at first, but it is noticeably quieter than Auto and a lot darker on the lighting too. The filter is easy to remove and clean and eventually replace and for a medium-sized room its just about big enough.
For the money, it is a well-performing machine. It isn’t super-quiet and after paying the 150 up front you will be shelling out 20 for a new filter within a few months, so running costs must be taken into account. It doesn’t use much electricity which is something. The AC0820 does a good job and if you need a machine like this in your house it’s worth a look.
Firstly this is big! Calling it compact is slightly misleading and portrays it as a desk steamer but it isn’t, this is a serious piece of kit and, yes, while smaller than an industrial dehumidifier, it is still a good sized piece.
It can get noisy, when it goes into full mode the noise can rise a bit, is it enough to stop you watching tv? No, would it be enough to wake you at 4am however, then according to my husband – yes!
Personally I found the noise quite relaxing and it didn’t bother me but even on the sleep mode where it is supposed to be quieter it is still quite audible.
Is the air quality better? Well since I’ve had it in the bedroom then I do think I wake up less congested so I’d like to think it does. Overall I’m very happy with it.
I love this Philip’s air purifier.
Since switching this purifier on I have absolutely noticed that I am coughing and clearing my throat less, something in the air was irritating my chest and this has thankfully reduced this.
There is minimal noise that I Dont notice on it at all.
It is a stylish, white, neutral colour so fits in nicely with my bedroom decor.
Philip’s is a trusted brand and this product does not let the name down.
Well worth the 150 price tag as it is a quality, well designed product that actually works.
Highly recommended, 5 stars!
We don’t have allergies but we do have dogs and an open plan kitchen/diner/lounge so we’ve found this very useful for combatting general cooking and doggie smells now that the days and nights are cooler and we don’t have windows and doors open. Although it’s bigger than some humidifiers we’ve had it’s still quite compact and reasonably easy to site out of the way. Plug it in and switch it on and it automatically senses what the air quality is and a small ring of coloured light on top of the machine indicates whether it’s good, okay, or poor. On it’s lowest setting it takes a long time to purify poor air quality but on the high setting it can go from bad to good within half an hour and that’s in a combined space of about 45ft x 15ft, so pretty efficient considering it’s designed for small rooms. On it’s lowest setting it’s very quiet and you’d hardly know it was on, but on the higher two settings it’s the same sort of volume as a fan, but you would mostly only need to run it on these settings for a fairly short time. You need to change the filter now and again but that’s easy enough and the only downside I found is that the on/off switch is low down on the side rather than at the top.
We’ve been running a 3M giant air filter thing for the last uhm…five years ish and whilst I can’t fault its performance at all (it removed literally anything detectable on a PM2.5 meter) I did have a few gripes with it, all of which are solved with this machine, although it does introduce one new one. I will attempt to address in some formal manner:
1 – Noise. This thing is silent so long as your air is clean. It’s quieter than a laptop fan. Our old one was LOUD.
Sure enough when it gets going or if you put it on turbo mode it gets a fair bit louder, but it has the sleep mode which prevents this happening at night – if you are bothered – although I find it doesn’t tend to get loud at night because there’s no source of particulates if nobody is stomping around or cooking – which are the two main sources of pollution it seems.
2 – Power consumption. Our old unit used 160W on its mid setting. This uses about 6W. It’s hard to really figure out why the old one used so much power. It wasn’t industrial, I mean sure I think it had about double the “working area” but they must have put an elevator motor inside it or something. This one will save a _lot_ of money while performing, on the face of it, equally well, give or take.
3 – Filter life. Our old unit had the “you must change the filter every month” which is…yeah, we didn’t. We did it about every 3-4 months and honestly could have probably done it every year. This one says every year, and it also says you can vacuum the filter – but you can’t wash it. Not that I would anyway, in my experience washing these folded HEPA filters almost always ruins them – they stink afterwards.
4 – Size. Our old unit had a “flat” hepa filter whereas this one it’s a toroid donut shape which means you can get almost the same surface area into a much smaller size box. It’s relatively tiny, more like a low stool compared to our old one which was a monolith.
5 – Filter cost. About the same actually, I think it’s about 17 a filter. But that’s per year so it’s very reasonable.
6 – Auto setting. Honestly I care less about this as I’d have happily just put it on medium and left it – but it does rev up every time we open the front door or anyone stomps near it raising dust from the carpet so I believe the sensor is sensitive enough (for the inquisitive, it’s a beam based particle sensor the same as an optical smoke alarm). In a way it’s good to know what/when the air quality is worse so you can avoid doing it. Like uh, leaving windows open. Nice.
And the downsides:
1 – You can’t manually set a level. By that I mean, sure, it has Auto, sleep or max. But I can’t set it to medium manually. And max is insanely noisy.
2 – No remote control or internet functionality. The next model up does I think, that looks amazing.
Overall I am quite pleased with it, it’s odd to suddenly find the room notably quieter. And I certainly will appreciate using less electric!
I suffer from minor allergies. I also have a cockapoo who is hypo-allergenic (compared to other dogs) but still try to ensure a filtered breathing environment as far as possible. I have found this air purifier to be very reliable. It was easy to unbox and set-up. A filter is included in the box. To access the filter simply unscrew the base and lift out the bottom. Changing filters involves the same process. The design is also simple, with he unit measuring around 40cm in height. Seems to be very story and well built. A UK power plug is included- this is not attached to the unit itself.
Noise levels are fairly quiet at an operational level. The top has touch sensitive controls. These are simple to use, but a remote would have been a welcome addition. A colour indicator on the unit shows the level of air quality, so you know when it needs to be turned off or kept a full power. This is reliable and I have noticed after I use my deodorant it goes red, so it definitely works! I definitely sleep Bette with this in the room and can tell that the air quality has improved, too.
Overall, I cannot fault this little air purifier. It is well worth considering if you suffer from allergies to just want cleaner air quality. It works well and is simple to use.
Th is quite a size so better on floor than table top! The night time really is whisper quiet. There are two modes from standby which is a gentle tick over. One is a medium fan and the other full. When on full the sound is noticeable but the air
Movement significant and blows out of top so doubles in helping circulate the higher warmer air in the winter.
The pollutant sensor is very sensitive, sets of when after shave is used, when the bed is made or if anyone vapes in the room.
Certainly seems very efficient!
Let’s address the elephant in the room, this air filter costs, a LOT. That being said you definitely get a high quality product, with great customer support and a long lifetime.
Clean air is something you think you don’t need until you have it. Personally I have never thought of buying an air filter before because I have always just thought, just open the window. However I was completely wrong.
This filter filters down to 0.3 microns which is tiny, it catches a lot of airborne particles which are normally in the air outside.
It is literally like taking a break of fresh air when walking in after this has been on. The air just feels a lot lighter and easier to breath.
It was something I never thought of but after being recommended by a friend I cannot see how I have lived without this before
This is a very simple yet effective air purifier. It has a very minimalistic design and suitable for the average room. I have mine in my living room as this is the room my family use the most, it sits discretely on the side next to my tv and works away quietly in the back ground.
I have tried it on multiple settings and can report it works very well. We have a fire in our front room and while the fire is on the machine works at top speed to clean the air. On this setting it is a little noisy however, works very effectively. After only 30 minutes its back down to the standard setting and works unnoticeable in the background. There are only two buttons on this device, one to turn it on/off and a touch button on the top to manually change the settings. However, I prefer to leave it on auto and found this very smart device does the rest.
There is a simple colour display air purity indicator on the top that you don’t get in many other compact air purifiers (only in the big expensive ones). BLUE for good quality going all the way to RED for poor quality. Although it sounds silly it really does make the air feel that bit fresher and cleaner. I left it running over night and found it just felt cooler and clearer the next day. I cannot wait to use this during the summer to help relieve my son’s hay fever, which has caused him so much distress the past few years.
I honestly, cannot rate this device highly enough, it comes with easy to understand instructions and you simply plug in and away you go. This is so easy to use, the set up is effortless and it allows your family to breathe in the best quality air possible.
his air purifier is really effective and shows the changing air quality in a room. May be a bit noisy if used in a bedroom but works well in the sitting room.
It’s quite amazing the difference an air purifier makes, even in a house without pets or smokers. What you think is clean air is surprisingly full of impurities. Now I’m against living in a totally sterile atmosphere, but clean air, especially for asthmas sufferers, is beneficial.
This unit is by no means tiny, but is small enough for a small(ish) bedroom, It’s easy to use — but Phillips have certainly made a meal of the instructions! I would argue that it is “whisper quiet” as it’s loud enough to drown out my radio. It’s a bit like the “background” music BBC documentary makers are so fond of. I do wish it had some sort of carrying handles, or recesses to make it as portable as it should be.
It’s effective as an air purifier, and that’s what matters, but I think it’s a little expensive.
I see in the product title and description on Amazon it says it is “HEPA” but there is no mention of this on the box, makers website or manual.
It would seem to obtain HEPA certification a filter system has to remove 99.7% or better.
This one comes close at 99.5%.
This unit has a NanoProtect Level 2 Filter and it seems only NanoProtect level 3 Filters meet the “HEPA” standard (I may of course be wrong so you may wish to check this for yourself if it is of concern).
Anyway, the unit comes well packed and is the size of a small bin with just the one filter inside which resembles the air cleaner on a large diesel engine air intake (cost of filter is under 20.00 with an estimated life of one year).
Note: The filter comes sealed in a bag and has to be unwrapped before use.
The 13 amp plug has the power adapter built into it and it has a on/off switch on the side and a level control touch button on top.
Note: If powered from a time switch the unit will come back on in “Auto” mode (it has “Auto”, “Turbo” and “Sleep”).
The electronic sensor does indeed detect dirty air and it reacted to when I used a dry skin remover on my feet in the same room.
When the fan is in low speed it is not completely silent making a noise a bit like a humming mains transformer and of course when the fan speeds up it sounds very much like a fan blower.
It uses under 5 watts of power in low peaking at over 23 watts when the fan is in turbo.
My one has been running for a few days in my bedroom and I can live with the noise it makes and I am sure it helps filter the air just as the makers claim.
This Air Purifier is around 35 cm high and extremely light meaning you can transport it around the house to whatever room you want to use it in. It is really very simple to use with just a bit of packaging to remove from the body and filter before you switch it on. The only other control is the button which changes the settings which has three Modes Turbo which is quite noisy but only required for a short time, Auto which is the one you will use most to create good air and then to maintain it and then Sleep which is impressively quiet and should not disturb any but the lightest of light sleepers. This button also changes colour to inform you as the air quality changes from very poor (red) to poor (pink) to fair (purple) and Good (blue). When we first used it in our bedroom we found the light shining red, but it changed to blue within 20-25 minutes which was pretty impressive we thought. Given the size of the unit this is going to work effectively in small or medium sized rooms and not cavernous spaces, but you really do notice a difference in both the reduction of air and air quality. I would have thought those with allergies or asthma would think this an excellent buy.
Note that the filter is not reusable-this is a device with a cost. You also need to keep an eye on the air quality sensor at the back which needs to be kept clean using a soft brush if the air quality readings are to stay accurate. Nonetheless for such a small unit this is really effective and portable especially with build quality up to the best standards of the house. Recommended.
I suffer from hay fever and asthma so was really happy to give this air purifier a go to see if it helped me. I used it in the bedroom for a better night’s sleep. It is very compact and quiet – I was surprised at just how quiet it is. The controls are easy to work – I just put it on Auto so it can come on automatically when it senses that the air quality is deteriorating. It switches off again when it has done its thing. I have noticed a real difference, and I’m sure it will be even more useful for me in summer when pollen levels start to rise. A very good and easy to use machine that is worth the price for the difference it makes and the ease of using it.
Its rare for me to give an item 5 stars as I am quite particular about quality, which is why I have given this top marks. The quality is brilliant, this air purifier is very well made and the quality speaks for itself. We have had the bigger version of this before, but its very noisy. This is a much smaller yet just as efficient version which is so very quiet and easy to have on without any interferring with sleep etc. We have allergies in our house and an asthma sufferer so this machine is brilliant at making the air cleaner, the light comes on and it shows by colour the pollution and then as it runs you can see the colour changing showing that the air is now cleaner. We are very pleased with it and we would recommend to anyone that has allergies or just wants to clean pollution from the air.
Easy to set up just remove the packaging, make sure you open it up to remove the packing around the filter itself.
Simplicity in itself to use, power the unit on and then use the touch sensitive button on the top to cycle through the modes, Turbo, Auto and Sleep. Auto mode adjusts the fan speed according to the air quality, Turbo is the highest speed and sleep is the slowest. I would also like to point out that when in sleep mode the unit really is whisper quiet. The air quality is indicated by the light on the cycle button.
We have been using this one upstairs rather than a larger model we have as it’s a more manageable size for moving around especially up and down stairs. It’s great for clearing up the air quickly in any room, but especially my sons dark lair. It doesn’t take long for the room to feel much fresher usually about 15-20 mins with the door shut and on auto mode.
With regards to the HEPA filter when it’s time comes for replacement you will be warned with a filter alert light, if you don’t replace the filter in time then the appliance will lock. Once a new filter is fitted you can reset the counter though. I’ve been looking around for the replacement filter and the only place I can find it at the moment is the Philips site itself, probably because the unit is new so the filter hasn’t started appearing elsewhere yet – it retails at around 20 so not overly expensive.
So a portable, simple to use nice looking unit that gets the job done.
With recent evidence that the air in our homes is worse than the air outside and autumn firmly having the UK in its grasp as I write this you may be thinking about getting a filter to take the fight back. The Philips AC0820/30 Series 800 Compact Air Purifier is a small purifier – slimmer by similar in size to a waste paper basket. Is half the size of a Homedics filter I reviewed a few weeks ago. It shares some design touches of that model too. This model is very much at the base of Philips’ air filters so I won’t be criticising that it doesn’t have app support or timers to control its use; just know it is all manual operation.Being at the base of the range it relies solely on a hepa filter to clear the air; there arent any secondary mechanisms to clean the air (Ionisers or UV lights.)
The design is informed by the new style round HEPA filter (with integrated fluff screen) that fills the centre of the drum. I am not enamoured by the round design of these new units as they don’t offer a wall mounting option; which I prefer as it keeps the floor free of clutter.
Setup is very simple; though it’s disappointing to find an external power brick – surely the unit is big enough to put the power components on the inside. You twist off the base; remove the filter from its shipping bag and re-insert it. After that there is but one button to control things ( a benefit of not having ionisers or uv filters.) You can choose from 3 settings – the quiet low level, the loud full power and a detect setting. The detect uses the purifiers air monitor and powers the speed up when it detects things. Spraying cologne on the unit powers it up to full; having it beside the dining table does the same. In the bedroom at night it sits quietly – though. The ramp up speed does work if you have It turned on and set to the low speed.
The fan on this filter is exceptionally quiet – my watch rates it at 40dB on the slowest speed; lifting up to 68dB no full power. The latter you wouldn’t sleep through but maybe use on boost for an hour whilst you are out. The standard setting is whisper quiet.
Cleaning the unit is a question of removing the filter and running a vacuum over the mesh filter. Sadly this isn’t removable so you cant wash it. That would be my strong preference as it properly cleans it. The HEPA filter, as with all hepa filter, needs an annual replacement. HEPA filters are used in hospitals for cleaning the air in surgery rooms; and can remove virus from the air (if you do replacement them regularly.)
The Philips AC0820/30 Series 800 Compact Air Purifier is noticeably quieter than the homedics unit I have; that 40dB really makes it a 5* filter. They do clean the air well; and this room rated filter is great for putting in the bedroom and leaving running all the time.
Great for little used spaces like a storage closet or larger areas like garage. They do an excellent job of filtering the air, both of odours and dust.
I have been using this at night when I sleep. I wake up feeling more refreshed and less congested. I can tell a difference in the air when I wake up. It is the perfect size and I like the different settings.
It isn’t loud, I actually find it very peaceful. I wish I had one for every room and I highly recommend this product.
This is a superb filter from Philips.
The first thing that struck me is how compact it is. It I really easy to tuck away somewhere but if you do leave it out it looks sleek and modern.
Its pretty much plug in and go. I live in an industrial town so I use this to help keep the air clean. However, its really handy if you have allergies etc
The one button controls it all and also indicates the air quality. When you first set it up or power it on it works at full tilt until it reduces pollutants and then it just maintains it. I’ll be interested to see if it reduces illnesses such as colds etc in the house.
If you want to leave it on overnight it has a sleep mode for near silence. And whilst you can still hear it just slightly its not intrusive. Perfect if you or your kiddo has allergies.
The Philips Air Purifier has to be the best one I’ve ever used.
It’s good and sturdy so can be used all around the house. I’ve used mine in the kitchen to get rid of odours whilst cooking and generally keeping it fresh.
It’s wonderful for the bedroom too my other half has Asthma and any dust or pollen makes it worse. He had a lovely nights sleep in fact he only woke once and that’s because he needed to go the toilet.
It has Hepa filters and gets rid of 99.5% of unwanted particles now that’s amazing.
It hardly makes any noise so perfect for getting a good nights sleep.
It has a nice contemporary look so doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
I highly recommend this in fact going to get one for my Dad too.
This Philips AC0820 Compact Air Purifier comes with a mains plug lead and commendably simple instructions by way of a user manual and, most usefully, via a laminated card attached to the appliance. To get going all you need to do is to remove the filter from its polythene bag and connect the unit to the mains. The unit comes with a 2-year warranty and access to UK based support. At 22W consumption, this unit should be economical to run.
The unit is roughly the size of an inverted waste paper bin with a mains switch at the rear and looks/feels well made. Once installed there is only one control and a couple of indicators on top of the unit to consider – I love the simplicity. Using the touch-sensitive button inset into the top grille you cycle through the three settings, Auto, Sleep and Turbo. The unit is suitable for areas up to 49 Sq metres which is adequate for most average UK bedrooms.
I imagine most people will leave the unit on Auto, in this mode the purifier comes on and off adjusting the speed to ensure the air condition is good. The unit features an internal air quality sensor (which most compact purifiers don’t) and the colour changes according to whether the air quality is good (blue), fair (blue-purple), poor (purple-red) and very poor (red). There’s also a filter replacement alert LED.
The theme of simplicity extends to replacing the filter which is conical in shape. You simply unscrew the underside of the unit and remove/insert the filter. One slight shortcoming is that I can’t see anywhere where the life expectancy of the filter is stated. Although not washable you can vacuum the filter periodically to clean it. The only other maintenance needed is to occasionally clean the air sensor with a soft brush.
In use, the unit appears to work well. I’ve been using mine in my bedroom and after using the turbo setting to clean the air initially I’ve left it on auto and so far it hasn’t disturbed my sleep. If you were a light sleeper it would make sense to use the sleep setting. Sleep mode mutes the already subtle lighting and the fan is extremely quiet. There is plenty of data included with the product to tell you how effective it is at cleaning the air but to me, the important thing is how the air actually feels. I feel the air is much cleaner/fresher and I seem to sleep better.
In summary, the adjectives that come to mind with this air purifier are quality, effectiveness and simplicity — the only slight omission is it that would have been nice to know “on average” how long the filter will last. I like this product a lot and have recently bought a similar size model from another brand, I certainly think this model is worth the price premium for its automatic monitoring/control function.
