Philips Hue White & Colour Ambiance Smart Bulb Twin Pack LED [B22 Bayonet Cap] – 1100 Lumens (75W equivalent). Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Homekit [Energy Class F]
1Set the Mood216 Million Colours3Colour for every occasion
I love these lights, they work well with minimal setup and the wireless controls are better than anything else I’ve seen. They are expensive and apparently there are better quality lights with better features out there but the ease of use and reliability are why I keep coming back to Phillips hue
Used to make a teenagers room more ‘cool’. They’re really happy with the colour changing capability. Excellent quality. Expensive but worth it in my opinio
The Philips app isn’t very user friendly so only four stars, the lamps are bright and with being LEDs are very economical to run. They are expensive in comparison to other brands, but that said the Philips brand has proven over the years to be very well made, so hopefully these will last a long time
Around a year ago I was feeling down and my mum decided to get me to ‘lighten up’ by buying me a smart light bulb. One of the cheaper options by a brand I still cannot name. And it was all fine until earlier this week when it decided to start turning itself on and off again of its own volition. So I decided to invest in these. I got this set and one other that only does white. Genuinely the simplest smart device to install I’ve yet to own. It was that simple I did it when I was drunk. Literally, screw it in, switch it on at the wall, couple of taps on the app and a short chat with Alexa. Done.
I also love how many colours it can be in and I’m really loving the scenes feature.
If you’re unsure whether it’s worth the money and you don’t much care about having multicoloured lights, the single white Hue bulb is a good place to start, but personally I love the colour change option. And with my previous experience of off brand options, it probably is worth spending the money. When mine went wrong there was no online support available to me to troubleshoot what might have gone wrong. As Phillips is the market leader in smart bulbs any question I can think of has already been answered.
Highly recommend.
They’re great, and if you’re looking at this you probably know that because you already have some (note: these do not come with a hue bridge so if you’re looking for your first hue lights get a starter pack instead). I feel disgusting buying these even when they’re on sale, let alone full price.
Problem is, they are actually the best. Cheap 10-20 smart lightbulbs always seem to have some kind of hum/buzz at a certain part of the RGB spectrum or at certain light levels but these are great – smooth and great transitions with a good app and seamless integration with Alexa/Google Home/Smart Home/whatever you use.
I’m up to 4 colour and 2 white ambient in the house and as much as I’d like to replace all the bulbs, I’m not a millionaire.
I have been using Philips Hue smart bulbs for some time throughout the house and outside as well. I have tried cheaper ones, but they just don’t have the range of colour, nor the vibrancy of these bulbs. Seeing these on sale was a no brainer 🙂 The full price is getting pretty high now and Philips need to look at their costs to bring it down quite a lot.
These bulbs set a mood; create an atmosphere; I bought for my bedroom.
I have Philips Hue lights in every room in my home and even in the garden. Yes they cost more but they are so . well worth it. I just couldn’t be without them now and so easy to set up too.
I love these bulbs I have them all over the house now and connected up to my Alexa! They’re expensive but so worth it! Although energy rating is shockingly bad so I need them to work on tha
Purchased the twin pack for a good price and not disappointed with the results. Colours are vibrant and add ambiance to a room. White light can be adjusted from brilliant white, to a dim warm candlelit glow. Settings included sleep / wake and cyclic modes. In cyclic mode the light can be set to smoothly cycle between colours via adjustable timing.
Conclusion: Much better than running rgb ribbons around the room.
These bulbs work so well. They have a bluetooth connection so they do not require the Hue hub. I linked them directly to my Alexa though through Alexa the colour selection is quite limited. But using the Phillips Hue app you can have much more control including a sunrise wake up function, fake fireplace, fake candle and a huge variety of colours. Hopefully Alexa integration will improve with time.
Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission says:
I love hue products, they work. They are the best at what they do. Yes they are not cheap but quality never is. Got these on a deal which makes the value much better. Have used Philips hue bulbs for years and will continue to do so.
These are utterly brilliant and I recommend them to everyone – we’ve now invested in a bunch of them. Tried a cheap knock off years ago but you really need lights to work 100% of the time, so I’d recommend getting a solid brand like this. The problem is that they work best when you have several and can start using them as a decorating tool, but they’re extortionate if you do.
I wish they were a tad brighter – the white is as bright as the standard bulbs we had before but unsurprisingly the more other colors you remove to get a pure color, the less bright they are – so we’ve found that we needed a few to fill the space.
The lamps are just brilliant. Unfortunately Amazon did not deliver the model ordered (old version in new box), and outside the 30 day return policy before discovered. Phillips to the rescue – their customer service people were so helpful and sorted me the new Bluetooth version free of charge. Even phoning to check all was okay. Thank you Phillips. A great company and great product.
I needed a light I could turn down and be candescent to help me sleep better. But also having redecorated out living room white & grey these lights allowed changing the colour and mood, as well as being able to automate it all.
These are actually quality but you do pay for it. Better cost multi by offers would be helpful especially the spots etc a 4, 6 or even 8 would be really useful.
I love the ability to fully control these bulbs through the app or, to a lesser extent, through Amazon voice control. I also love the fact that they can remember the last setting when powered back on. If only the price was more reasonable.
I’ve used numerous different types of smart bulbs, and I’ve always found Philips Hue to be the most reliable, the easiest to set up, and with the best colour control of anything on the market. When connected to a Hue hub, they play happily with Alexa, and can be controlled locally when the internet is down. I feel they are at their best when connected to one of the Hue dimmer switches. Very few other brands of smart bulb gives you this essential option of connecting to a wireless dimmer switch.
However I’ve always found the previous generation (60w equivalent) a touch on the dim side for use as the main lights in the kitchen. My primary reason for the buying these new generation (75w equivalent) was to increase the brightness levels in what is a fairly large kitchen. In summary, I’m extremely happy with the result.
While the new bulbs are not massively brighter than the old generation, they are certainly very noticeably brighter (at bright white). While the old bulbs were about adequate, if a touch too dim for my liking at times, then I would say that these new generation bulbs are just right. They hit the brightness levels that the old bulbs should have done in the first place.
The other advantage about replacing the old bulbs with these new generation is that the old bulbs have now been moved to other smaller rooms that now benefit from having Hue bulbs for the main lighting. I’ve honestly never experienced any type of issue with any of the Hue bulbs, having used them for around a year now.
Please bear in mind that, while the whites are noticeably brighter, the colours on the new bulbs are pretty much as bright as the old bulbs. i.e. the colours are nowhere near as bright as the whites. However this is pretty standard for smart bulbs in my experience. The white setting is what we use most of the time in our household, and is what you need for cooking and everyday use. The non-white colours are great, but they’re more for ambience and fun. Don’t expect the colours to illuminate a room in the same way that bright white does.
All in all though, highly recommended without any hesitation whatsoever.

Update:
I’m updating my review as I have managed to connect the bulbs to Google home without the bridge, for anybody having issues, don’t connect to the bulbs with the hue app, if you have already, factory reset the bulbs in the app. Once they are disconnected from the hue app, you can add them directly to Google home, and presumably this is the same for other home assistants.
The light quality is great, a much more accurate and controllable colour and warmth than cheaper bulbs.
unfortunately they can’t be controlled with voice/linked with Google home without a bridge, despite what the description says. if it is possible then the app and online account are making it appear that way (worse?). i only need one bulb, why would i buy a bridge just for that?!
i also had a lot of trouble pairing these to the app, worked first time, but then after adding them i was redirected to make a hue account, one that was set up, it had forgotten the bulbs i added and could find them again, had to uninstall the Bluetooth only app and use the full hue app instead.
for this price, disgraceful.
Pricey but fun. The kids love them for their rooms and the ability to change colours using Bluetooth. Does what you expect from Hue. A little pricey if you view them just as lightbulbs.
These lightbulbs have been so helpful for my migraines. You can dim them from your phone so it’s easy to turn the lights down in quickly if you’re feeling a migraine coming on. And you can change the colour to migraine friendly colours.
I used to have a mixture of HIVE, FEIT bits of automation, so I decided to consolidate all my lighting and go with Philips Hue, mainly for ease of configuration.
Those 2 bulbs replaced 2 FEIT ones which were “okay” but not great, but the new Philips Hue ones integrate into my home automation system perfectly. I use a Hue Bridge, and now all my lights are fully automatic.
Thirty quid for a bulb seems a bit steep, but what you get is a great product, and so far my older Hue lights have been 100% reliable, with absolutely no failures at all.
I can also use Alexa to control the various bulbs, but that is going via the bridge, so can’t comment on how the bulbs would work directly with Alexa.
I needed colour for those bulbs, but all my other ones are “white”, which although still expensive are not quite as eye watering as those, but I can’t fault the product or it’s performance.
If you’ve got the Virgin hub5 you’ll understand the problem of getting your other smart bulbs to work with the wifi. The only bulb that would work was the Phillips Hue in my son’s bedroom (which he wanted because it was compatible and interacts with his Razr keyboard and speakers with his gaming PC). These bulbs join via Bluetooth to the Hue hub which is plugged in to my hub by ethernet so no wifi is needed. They’re perfect!
The lights are bright. I just ask alexa for white or warm white and they’re a bright white like a 100watt bulb or as low as probably 10watt equivalent. I’ve now got Phillip Hue bulbs in every room. Quite expensive but worth it in my opinion. The colours (in my other Hue bulb purchases) and the whites are much better, brighter and quicker to react to alexa commands. Very highly recommend.
These 1100lm bulbs are obviously slightly brighter than the old 800lm bulbs, you can notice the difference side by side but in real world usage not to the extent that I would recommend upgrading existing bulbs for this reason alone. In my opinion a single bulb is still not bright enough as a main overhead light source.
Reading the small print you will see they actually output 1055lm at 4000k and only 806lm at 2700k, which means when set to a warm white they only output the equivalent of an old 60W incandescent bulb.
As both 800 and 1100 bulbs can be bought for roughly the same price, and are physically identical, I certainly can see no reason to buy the still available 800 version unless you are only replacing a single failed bulb in a group (e.g. on a chandelier) and want them to match.
A note to anyone new to Hue and intending to use these with Bluetooth and not with a Bridge, the separate Hue Bluetooth app is very limited and cannot even group bulbs by room. It is really only of use with your first one or two bulbs to test things out, beyond that the Bridge becomes a necessity.
Emiten mejores verdes.
These make life so easy. Take literally seconds to set up, the whole process is automated and works first time. All lights now linked to each selectable and re-namable zones so you can turn all the lounge, bedroom or whatever lights off with a simple Alexa command or via the app. The 800 lumen 60w lamps are ideal for table lamps and background lighting. Suggest 1100 lumen 75w for main ceiling pendant lighting. Warm light is just that, warm not cold white. Ignore reports they emit a yellowish light – it’s impossible to notice unless you place one next to another. Chances are you’ll want all the same or it defeats the object. Expensive, but intelligent and genuinely useful in the real world – no more spilling coffee trying to reach for a light switch with hands full. Also good for confusing the dog 🙂
Where have I been? I’d heard about these bulbs, but wasn’t interested in any more gadgets. On a whim I ordered along with a new Echo Dot 4th generation on a Black Friday deal. Because I was purchasing the Echo Dot, the bulb was only 2, if bought together. I thought why not, it’s only 2, I got nothing to lose if I don’t like it. Well, I love it, it’s brilliant. My kids are jealous. I use it in my bedroom. You can still use the wall switch as normal aswell. The only thing is the energy rating is an F. But that aside, I would recommend it. It’s very easy to set up once you download the Phillip Hue app. I’d love to have more around the house in different colours but as these bulbs are not cheap I’ll think about it. Also you need to have a bridge, which I’ll have to get my head around first. The bulb is white and when set at 100% is a bright soft light. Likewise when used at 50%, 25% etc, and it’s just a lovely glow. I have a bedside touch lamp, but this is so much better especially on a lower %. Would definitely recommend, especially for those who are disabled, older aged adults, hands full of shopping or just being lazy. Let Alexa do the work for you.
I bought a second Philips smart bulb, this time a bayonet fitting rated at 15.5 LED (100w equivalent) for my main living room ceiling light. This is a room that does not receive much quality daylight and so a bulb is required for most days.
I have to say that I was overwhelmed by the quality of this Philips 15.5 LED bulb. The light it gives off is whiter and clearer, and it is far more powerful than the original 100w equivalent LED that it has replaced. After checking, this Philips bulb has a higher lumen value which, naturally, affects the light output. Indeed, it is so much brighter that I have it set dimmed by 10% and it is still much brighter than my old LED in that position.
Obviously, the bulb linked to Alexa seamlessly and, whilst I still feel these Philips smart bulbs are over-priced, given the huge improvement to my room’s lighting I am glad I invested in this bulb.
Original review follows…
A Philips smart bulb rated at 9w LED (equivalent to 75w).
This is a neatly designed bulb that fits a lamp perfectly. The light itself is very bright when on full, but it is a warm light, rather than a cold one, which is ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
Setting up with my Alexa Echo was simple. First download the Philips app as per the instructions and then link the bulb to the Alexa app. Job done, and only took a few minutes. Alexa controls the lamp now with no issues at all, on or off, increase or decrease brightness as required.
My only real issue with this product is the price, it is far too expensive for what it does, especially when the market is now flood with much cheaper smart bulbs that do the same (and more). They might be a little more complex to set up as smart bulbs with Alexa but the results are the same. If the Philips bulbs were more competitively priced I would certainly buy a lot more but, at the moment, I would be wary of continually spending so much money on a 9w LED smart bulb.
These are expensive compared with unbranded alternatives, but I’d have connection issues regularly with the cheaper versions, so I though I’d try Phillips.
Given these are 5x the price, I’d hoped they’d take some pain away. Connecting with the Phillips Hue app was easy.
Then getting them assigned to a particular Alexa device was as easy as saying “Alexa, find discoverable devices.”.
Well, it was if I only needed to do this once. Twice it lost the connection after a few hours.
Third time was the charm and since then, everything has been fine.
These bulbs are fantastic. I’ll admit it, they’re really pricey and the market is flooded with similar types but I needed another one to complete the lamp pairing in my living room. I had bought one to try out initially so I can obtain some dim light without needing to change my floor lamps and I was impressed, so I needed to bless the other identical lamp in the living room.
Really easy to control via the BT app, a cinch to add to Alexa and really helps me voice control the main lights. Great quality lights I am sure will serve me for a while, and be a great addition to any feature lighting in the home. Amazon Warehouse deals were also excellent too, so if you’re looking to reduce costs this is a sensible option.
These bulbs are also a bit more flexible in that they allow tuneable shades of white which is perfect if you want to use the lights during the day – warm white for a cosy night and bright daylight for working from home. Once you buy one, you might get carried away with changing others too!
I purchased this to go into a ceiling light which has a glass shade over the bulb.
Where the equivalent 60w Philips hue bulbs fit this 100w equivalent is a lot longer (perhaps even 1 inch longer) and I couldn’t get the glass shade of my light fitting to fit.
This won’t be a problem where you don’t have a shade to fit over the top of the bulb but for me it was no good.
The bulb advertised HomeKit compatibility and Bluetooth, which I thought meant the bulb could be controlled by HomeKit without a Philips Hue Bridge using the HomeKit hub of an Apple TV with its Bluetooth.
However, this is not the case. The Bluetooth functionality is only for a proprietary app and can’t even be used with Homebridge, requiring the Philips Hue Bridge for HomeKit, another 30-40.
Given a Hue Bridge, it works well with HomeKit. I can control the light with Siri and HomeKit automations, as well as using HomeKit adaptive lighting to automatically change the tint over time.
Brightness is not what a normal light of the same ‘equivalent’ wattage produces, but it’s sufficient. In the evening I drop it to 80% brightness and also use it as a night light in the bedroom at a few percent brightness — for that it works very well.
Good quality and colour of light, brightness is excellent, not overstated. They dim well when using the app, don’t put them on a dimmer switch. Bluetooth connects well and in my house I can connect with a light on the ground floor whilst sitting in the 3rd floor loft room. They connect well to WiFi and integrate with Alexa, so they can be voice controlled and on a schedule without a specialist hub. I got mine when they were on sale, as they are an expensive bulb.
I think they have changed the listing of what I purchased. Mine were 9W and 806 lumen. Definitely giving out that level of brightness and as bright as many bulbs that “claim” 1100 lumen.
In terms of the bulb itself, these are typical high quality smart bulbs. Very natural warm white (if a little dim) and low power draw. The shape is very conventional so will fit in any socket, and Alexa integration works as expected, with voice commands to dim and toggle the light operating correctly.
With the addition of Bluetooth to Hue, you don’t necessarily need a hub to drive the lights anymore if you’re using Alexa. However, the reliability when using Bluetooth mode is frankly awful. They want to lose connection and then will never reconnect even after a power cycle. Worse yet, the firmware some bulbs ship with require a hub to reset the bulb so if your Bluetooth is causing major issues and you don’t have a hub, you’re screwed. So first thing you have to do is download the Hue Bluetooth app on your phone and update the bulbs. After that, they’ll work perfectly and be very reliable with the benefit of being resettable without a hub.
It’s difficult to show off the variation of colours that Philips Hue can achieve, but I’ve added a few pics to show how vibrant it is.
If you just wanted one bulb, you can control this from the Philips Hue Bluetooth app and even one bulb makes a big difference to the atmosphere of your room. I have a few bulbs in my room and with the click of a button my white walls can be come cream or even whiter with the energise setting.
If you’re just dipping you toe into Philips Hue this would be a good start, but when you see how good it is, you will soon want to expand your collection.
If you have (or get the home hub) you can set your light to come on at random intervals, mimic a sunrise and sunset, or follow a pattern, you can even add the dimmer / button to your light which is magnetic and attaches to a metal bed frame (excellent when you cannot be bothered to get out of bed to turn the light/s off.
Overall a great smart bulb that is energy efficient and bright enough to use in a desk or floor lamp as well as wall and ceiling lights.
If you happen to have found this review helpful, I would really appreciate you giving it a thumbs up – it’s a great motivation to keep on reviewing. Thank you.
These are the cheapest Hue bulbs – just warm while (not quite 2700k more like 2900) and standard 800lm (so say 60W incandescent). They used to look different – but now all the bulbs have the same design (warm/ambiance/colour). So don’t buy these thinking they are Ambiance or Colour.
These still have BT (BlueTooth) but to be honest please invest in a Hue hub – best get a starter kit. Thankfully now after link-up BT is finally turned off in the latest firmware. Yay!
As these are the cheapest, these are the best in places where you don’t want to use expensive bulbs – say outside lights, utility/garage rooms and hallways. But for normal living rooms I’d say get Ambiance. For bathrooms since there are no Cold White bulbs perhaps again get ambiance.
Can not vault product bought two on promotion for 10 with the alexa im now so damm lazy .Love when Alexa says “your welcome” and sings me a song i must be getting bored by my self

Product excellent will buy more for the rest of the house
I have hue bulbs all over my house. They are a god send to me as I am disabled with severe mobility problems. I control the lights either from my tablet or Alexa. It means I can turn lights on and off more safely. I find it particularly good when I’m going to bed. I can keep the lights on downstairs and turn the bedroom light on before I get up there. I can get safely to the stair lift and into bed then ask Alexa to turn off the downstairs lights. You can adjust the brightness to your liking or use it as a little night light if you are up and down during the night (good for kids bedrooms too. I like the coloured ones the best though as I love changing the room scenes o suit my mood etc. These keep me safer at home and I wouldn’t be without them. They are expensive but I usually purchase these on prime day/Black Friday events when the deals are on which makes them more affordable. If I’m ever worried about intruders/noises in the night I can ask Alexa to turn all the lights on and the whole house is lit up like a Christmas tree, including the garden lights front and back.
We use a splitter in a couple of lights that allows two standard Hue E27 bulbs to be fitted into a single B22 bayonet socket. If the shade is right, the splitter is invisible and is a very good option, but we thought we’d try this new brighter bulb as well.
Well – it’s noticeably brighter that the two standard Hue bulbs and so offers better value in comparison. It’s a rather long bulb which, if you need to use a B22 bayonet to E42 screw thread converter will be even longer, so take care it won’t poke out of your lamp shade. In our case, it doesn’t and it is proving to be an excellent, bright Hue LED bulb.
These were very easy to set up with my Alexa, as soon as I installed the bulbs Alexa picked then straight up. Using the Alexa app I could quickly rename each bulb so I can control each individually as well as grouping them to control them collectively. As I have mobility issues just being able to switch on a lamp by voice which was previously hard to access for me is invaluable. Also two of my hall lights are on the same switch so now I can control each light separately as I often only need one on.
I’m not sure if I will replace all the bulbs in my home as some lights are just as easily turned on by the switch but for the three I have replaced it has certainly made life easier and addressed problems.
I had noticed with some other bulbs that you had to change the WiFi GHz in your home and also use other apps other than Alexa, this made set up rather complicated. This was unacceptable to me and just too hard. These bulbs may be more expensive but it was very much worth it to me to avoid this hassle.
Overall I’m very happy but of course would appreciate Phillips being a bit more competitive in price especially with the colour ones which are just a ridiculous price!
I’ve always wanted to get these & wasnt put off by some of the bad reviews I ordered the hub as well & soon as I got them they was so easy to setup & within minutes I was able to control the lights with my echo, hue app, through Siri & the home app on the iPhone , no need to get out of bed to search for the light just to get to the bathroom anymore lol, the only problem at the start was remembering to not touch the light switches to turn the light on but after a few oops moments the whole household has learned not to touch the switches lol & now using the lights with ease & ready to buy more & I would definitely recommend this especially when it has the options to automatically turn the lights on/off at certain times or after a certain number of time etc as part of routines through the hue app well worth the money
There are plenty of ‘smart lamp’ options around some of which work with the Philips Hue system and some that are more generic and I have a few. However, for ease of use, integration and reliability, no-one comes close to Philips Hue.
First off, this is a very well made bit of kit. It feels quality and it is quality – which, it should be given that it’s not the cheapest item out there.
Secondly, it just works. Out of the box, screw in and then add it to your Hue gateway hub. Takes seconds and is utterly reliable.
Now, the one thing that I didn’t notice at first is that you can use this without a hub and simply connect via Bluetooth from your phone. For me that’s not an issue as I already have the hub (well three to be honest) and use the full range of options. However, if you just want a couple of lamps to be operable from your phone then this works well.
The light quality is excellent and of course can be adjusted to suit easily either in real time or set up for a particular routine.
As for looks? Well, this is perhaps the downside of the Philips lamps. Mostly they don’t have the kind of ‘designer’ look that is suitable for bare bulb implementation. Nope, these lamps need to be in a shade for sure.
Overall, there is no better smart lighting system on the market.
I received mine technically free when I bought an Echo 4th Gen.
I’ve had Amazon Echos for 4 years now and have automated many things, including light bulbs.
Until now, they have all been WiFi, working from the 2.4Ghz signal, they’ve worked well, but after changing my router, I have had connection issues, with constant dropping out, throughout the day.
The new Echo has a built in ‘Hub’, and this is what this light bulb connects to.
I must say, I’ve been very impressed. It was immediately found by Alexa (you just say ‘Alexa, discover devices’, and she does.)
I then went into the Alexa app to change the name, and that’s it. It’s now ready to go.
The lamp itself is very nice, it’s a nice warm temperature, very similar to a traditional incandescent lamp.
The beauty of an automated light bulb as opposed to a plug, is that you also have the option to dim to a level of your choosing.
It works really well and I have it constantly set to a level of about 60%, giving good illumination, without being overpoweringly bright.
Overall, I’m really impressed with this Philips lamp. Simple to connect, very good connection reliability and the ability to dim have convinced me that this is definitely the way to go.
I will now be changing everything over to ‘Hub’ control.
It’s an A+ energy light bulb and it works. Would be nice if one were able to get white light, 6k, instead of warm light which tends to be a little too yellow for my taste but I can’t seem to track any down of the smart light variety. Is it easy to link? Yes, especially if you tick the little option box to link with your account, or does that not matter? Anyway it worked out of the box and it then took me way longer to figure out how to set it to come on at a specific time with the Alexa app! Very confusing, well for me anyway. Once I’d watched a very helpful Youtube video by some chap on how to do it I was up and running. I do like the ability to dim the light and not have to have a dedicated light switch to do so and I am enjoying the novelty of saying ‘Alexa, good night’ and the lights turning off. Little things please little minds and all that. Just remember that to make them work you need to have either a forth generation Echo a hub thing or a smart plug, which of course is the cheapest option. 25/01/2021 – Had to return this as the bluetooth side of it decided not to work anymore! The bulb itself continued to work but only if you got up and turned it on/off. Amazon replaced it so lets hope this one works way longer.
If you’re looking at home automation or smart lighting and don’t have anything at the moment, take your time before committing to Philips hue.
Don’t get me wrong, the bulbs are excellent. I’ve got a fair few in the house and they are great, life span has been amazing, colours are vivid and well rounded (some can be a bit off, but this is well know for LED’s), but brightness can lack a bit sometimes.
The down side, and why i would suggest caution, is the price! You’re talking 40 for a single bulb in some cases!
If, however you’re already invested in Hue, then go for it. Add in a hub and look at the range and there isn’t anything you can’t do with them. We’ve got outside, inside and strips and when working together they really are very impressive.
Good LED lamps with a lot of tech built in. I use 4 with an Alexa Echo Dot 3rd generation. Setting up isn’t too difficult although doing it in the Alexa app isn’t very intuitive. Because they can be set to any dimmed level they can replace any incandescent lamp eg 25/40/60/75W up to around 100w or 20W CFL.
Occasionally one lamp fails to respond to a command, I think it’s something to do with the Bluetooth. Note that if you get one of these into a state where it simply won’t respond to setting up it has to be factory reset using the Hue app, so really you need both the Alexa and the Hue apps for best results. The light colour quality is quite good without significant flattening of colours although as with any none incandescent lamp the lack of sympathetic colour shift shift towards red when dimmed is odd to start with.
These are really versatile smart bulbs with the standard UK bayonet mount. The white (and colour) bulbs can be controlled via a bluetooth app on your smartphone, a Hue Bridge, and the Zigbie hub on the Amazon Echo Plus.
The bulb comes well packaged but unfortunately the QR code on the box doesn’t work (I tried it both ways up).
The light is bright and clean, and can be dimmed using voice commands once you’ve linked in your smart home devices (I use the Echo Dot, Echo Show 5 and Echo Plus) to the Hue Bridge, or can also be adjusted using the app.
Philips provide 2 apps, one for Bluetooth control and another for control via their hub.
Alexa can also directly address the bulbs, but if you are using a hub there is a known and well documented problem with Alexa ceasing to recognise the Hue system. We had to perform a factory reset and link the hub to a different account in order to get Alexa to talk to them again.
My old porch light got broken so I bought a new one. The bulb in the old one turned itself on and off at sunset and sunrise. Unfortunately, its idea of these times was wholly dependent on ambient light outside. Also it used about 36 watts.
Having bought several coloured Hue lights before, I thought I would get a white only for the porch. This fits the bill perfectly and I can now program it to switch on at sunset and off at sunrise far more accurately than the old bulb. It is nominally rated at 9 watts but I have turned it down to about 50% as it is still bright enough at that level. I guess that means it’s now only using about 4.5 watts which is next to nothing.
I can also control it via Alexa. It also has bluetooth which means it will operate without a Philips Hub. However, as all my other lights are on the hub, so is this. I can’t comment on the bluetooth aspects, therefore.
These are fantastic bulbs. They make things so much easier, and no its not about being lazy not getting off the sofa or bed to turn light on/off. There is much more than that.
Using the hue app and adjusting settings my lights will all automatically turn off as i drive away from my property, and alternatively my hallway light will come on as I arrive close by to my property. They also slowly come on in the morning during dark mornings.
I can name them whatever I want, such as my bedroom being betty. They are nice and bright, and there’s even a night light setting for my daughters bedroom which is great.
Super simple to install, functional, aesthetically pleasing and convenient.I have just the light bulb since I don’t need the whole kit. I’ve been able to get myself in bed and use my phone to turn off the light or dim it down depending on what I’m doing. I can set a “sunset” like an alarm clock to gradually wake me up at a given time in the morning as well as gradually dim to eventually cut the light out to help me sleep before bedtime whilst i’m reading or what not. Definetly worth investing in.
These are the next gen Philips Hue bulbs which were released around Sept 2019. They now include Bluetooth which enables the bulbs to work without the Hue bridge which connects to your modem. I would recommend you have the bridge to allow you full control and add extra lights! Once you start buying into hue, you don’t stop!!
I went for the white bulb as I placed this in my hallway where I don’t need to control the colour temperature. The white ambience allows you to change shades of white. This bulb is a fixed warm white. You can still dim the bulb without buying a dimmer. The dimming is controlled via the app or Alexa/google.
As soon as I plugged them in, the Philips Hue app detected them immediately when I scanned for new devices. I have a hue bridge but these also work without a hue bridge and via the app. There are some limitations without the bridge such as software updates and the number of lights you can have.
These lights are bright, at 800 lumen.
I have set a timer – sunset to sunrise via the hue app so these come on automatically and turn off at sunrise. Helps with security.
I have a small bedroom but had no light to get to the bed without bumping into things but with my Philips hue I just ask Alexa to switch my light on, climb into bed and ask her to switch it off – no more bumping into cupboard handles or the wooden bed frame – would recommend as its very easy to set up I’m 73 and I did it!
As these bulbs were advertised with the bluetooth functionality, I had hoped that I would be able to use them without the hub. Unfortunately, the bluetooth does not work unless u are directly underneath the bulb! It became a unless feature. I ended up having to fork out for the hub.
In addition set up was painful.
Having said that with the hub, the bulbs are reliable. Fits well. I love the ability to dim. The colour selections are vast and beautiful. Works well with google and alexa
as a previous buyer of these hue bulbs i realised that it was going to need 2 bulbs to provide enough light to make them viable for use in a kitchen environment so i purchased these e27 versions and a seperate b22 to 2x e27 adapter for my main kitchen lights so now with alexa i can just say kitchen lights on / off or if i dont need that level of illumination i can say kitchen 1 / 2 on which is fine for making a brew or grabbing stuff from the fridge.
setup is a little odd, if you just want to use alexa you just plug the light in turn it on and say alexa discover devices and with that its all done in about 1 min however if you also want app control then you need to set them up with the hue bluetooth app first then fanny around within that to get it working with alexa.
the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is so far it’s “lost” one of the bulbs resulting in having to power off the bulb at the switch for a while then power back on and use the alexa app to reconnect it by holding your tablet 15cm from the bulb, no easy task if need sticks to stand, if you ever need to do a factory reset on the bulbs then a google search and a complex set of timed power cycles is required.
frankly i just wish that the smart bulb socket converters were more readily available so we could just use regular cheap dumb bulbs in light fittings where all you need is a smart on/off (like a kitchen).
For a 40 light bulb one would expect nothing less than a quality product that delivers its promises. Which this Hue bulb does. However, a few gripes I have with the product, or perhaps with the Hue ecosystem in general, relate to its strict requirements for Bluetooth use. You cannot control these Bluetooth lights with anything other than an Android or iPhone device, or your smart speaker (Echo, Google Home etc.). This means if one wished to control this from their computer, they’ll be sorely disappointed. You also will not be able to sync up the lights with music, control them with IFTTT (if this then that), or do anything much other than control the basic features via the single Hue Bluetooth app (which does its job without a fuss) without the proprietary Phillips Hue Bridge which links your local network of lights together. Set-up was quick and painless, no issues. Option available for the default turn-on setting – useful for when you accidentally flick the old light switch off out of habit, and want to recover the last colour you had.
Over-all it’s a decent product but would benefit from being more accessible on computers, perhaps a web interface (with the Bluetooth-only option). Bridge owners will find this more featureful, however for 40 per bulb, plus 45 for a Bridge, one ought to have deep pockets for this pet lighting project.
The bulb is excellent if you own a bridge. Not bad with over Bluetooth, but lacks many of convince features. With the Hue BT app I can control brightness and configure presets. I can also control the brightness for when I turn it on via the good old dumb switch. There no rooms, scenes or anything else. There is voice assistance integration, but I couldn’t configure it with Google Home. Kept saying device not found. All in all, great if you only have 1 or 2 rooms. The bulb is bright enough when you need it.
I bought it in bundle and I did not pay attention there is two different type of hue white.
AMBIANCE:
CONS
-cost 50% more
PRO
-you do not need to chose 2200K-2700K-3000K or 4000K bulb, you can set up later
-you can switch between nice soft or bright color as needed
-you can use as a night light because dimms down to 1% (with basically 0 energy usage)
-more efficient, only uses 8.5W instead of 9W for the 806lm
The light is warm, very good, like an old 75W bulb, but not as bright as a “modern” 72W (=100W) halogen, I also tried out an old 20W fluorescent, now I just call it “the boss” 🙂 (but that needs few minutes to warm up)
Connectivity is brilliant: does not need a bridge, just a modern echo dot (say:”Alexa, discover”) (but also works with a single phone thru bluetooth far from any internet connection). I deduct 1 star because only can dimmed between 20-100%.
I had some connection problem using bulb with different firmware, there is an update to install int “hue blutooth” app.
Bought this bulb to use with my Amazon Echo. Had previously used cheaper WiFi connected bulbs, but the light often tended to be quite sharp and uncomfortable; so I am glad these Phillips Hue bulbs no longer require you to buy the control bridge!
Connecting was seamless and couldn’t have been easier – simply installed the bulb, and Alexa straight away said that a new light was recognised – then just went on the Alexa app and named the lightbulb. That was it!
Light is nice and comfortable – I like the ability to dim the bulb, so can ask Alexa to “turn the light down to 50%” etc. Also able to add it to routines on the Alexa app; e.g. automatically turning the light off when you say “goodbye” etc.
I have several smart bulbs and I have to say this one stands out. Out of the box it is mega simple to install (using Echo anyway). Soon as you put bulb in and switch on my Echo dot picked up a new device and installation was over in a minute or two.
Having these bulbs do not require a hub, they are dimmer bulbs so, in our case, we turned our main living room lights into dimable (words?!? Lol) without changing our light switches.
Works with the Philips app and/or Echo so Alexa can control your lights on voice command.
Phillips Hue command a high price, but for me you get what you pay for. I recommend this bulb but would recommend you keep an eye out for sale offers which seem to come up quite often. I managed to pick up half price offers so jump on them when they come up.
There is one con, if it is one, that’s having to train yourself not to switch the light switch off or the obvious outcome is you can’t control your bulbs using app or echo … this took a little mind training on our part and occasionally we forget. It’s not a big deal really, just means you are back to an old fashion manual switching on and off of your lights … the hardship!
Got these in a bundle with an third generation Echo speaker that I purchased for my Mum and Dad. They’ve put them into their side lamps that they have on either side of their settee.
With the old bulbs, they would have to get up and walk to each side to switch the lights on. Now they just say “Alexa, switch all the lights on” and both lights come on! They can also switch them on and off independently if they want to! The lights are way brighter than their old bulbs when on full blast but they can dim them now too!
Best of all, these bulbs just work with the Alex echo device that they were bundled with. The Philips Home hub device isn’t needed to use these.
My parents are over the moon with these bulbs and it makes them feel like they’re living in the future!
This product is perfect!!
I was surprised to be honest about it.
I initially saw these were screw in bulbs then looked at the cost of changing my old bayonet ones… when I stumbled across this one.
It’s perfect and it makes life so much better in the bedroom.
I am no longer left to get out of bed when the mrs refuses to switch the light off 🙁
This was bought to go with an Alexa but she has it connected to the s8 by Bluetooth
Set up was simple and using it is simple.
It also works like a normal light ie from the light switch in case the app user is out the house and you think you will be stuck in the dark
We are intending on replacing every bulb in the house with these as it’s simple setting them up and once you have a smart light you won’t regret it .
It has three main settings bright dimmer and nightlight but you can set your own preference.
This one is only white but I have noticed you can buy for a bit more coloured ones.
I’d say go for the coloured ones as you will have more fun with them rather than the white.
These are excellent !! Buy one immediately
Update now connected to echo dot gen 3 and was simple to set up.
Got these with a echo in the Black friday event, thought i’d give smart bulbs a go. easy to install, just plug them in, turn them on, and download the Hue app, it then sets it up, once they are in the app, you can ask Alexa to find new devices, and away it goes. You can then rename then in the alexa app to whatever you want.
Brightnesss is decent at 100% so much so that we rarly have them on 100% but you can tell alexa to put then only any percentage you want. It is a warm white but its not a really orange warm, which I like. We’ve set up so routines so they come son in the morning at a certain brightness, which works great.
Overall I think they are great, and the missus loves them, so much so she wants to buy some more.
Great. Make sure you have a Gen3 dot or a gen2 echo and above and they will run out of the box on their own. Plug them in the socket, switch on the light switch. Pop over to your Alexa app, there they are. Less than 30 second set up. Its literally like changing a bulb. A nice warm yellow white light. Same as a normal bulb colour. Not a white white
You can name bulbs individually, I have Sharron and Keith. I can tell Alexa to turn on Sharron and Keith to turn down. Go well with my plug (Balthazar)
Happy days! My life is easier, and you should buy them too…
I love these lights, they work well with minimal setup and the wireless controls are better than anything else I’ve seen.
Good lights, very bright with good colour range.
Nice effects available too.
A little pricey!
Works great, easy setup with bridge (must have for reliability and 10+ hue products)
Works every time and great colours and brightness. I use the hue app and switches, not voice, alexa or anything like that.
Dislikes : price. (buy them on special from hue uk store). Would be great if phillips sold them in a true bulk, discounted pack of 4 or more.
I wish they were a tad brighter – the white is as bright as the standard bulbs we had before but unsurprisingly the more other colors you remove to get a pure color, the less bright they are – so we’ve found that we needed a few to fill the space.
i got these for about half price but the price has gone up massively. greedy lights but expensive the offer i got but brilliant bulbs
These are expensive, but really good.I tired the cheaper ones of these, not as bright.
These are actually quality but you do pay for it. Better cost multi by offers would be helpful especially the spots etc a 4, 6 or even 8 would be really useful.
Bought this product to work alongside our hive bulbs. This can be controlled through the hive mobile app which is also very useful for me
I love the ability to fully control these bulbs through the app or, to a lesser extent, through Amazon voice control. I also love the fact that they can remember the last setting when powered back on. If only the price was more reasonable.
Love my hue lights. Very easy to use and a great colour range
Love the different options of color. Works well with Alexa. Very easy to set up.
Please do let me know if you’ve found this review to be in any small way helpful. Thank you.

All in all though, highly recommended.
Please let me know if you’ve found this review to be in any way helpful. Thank you!
So handy when in bed and forgot to switch off the light.
If you’ve already got a hue bridge, then perfect, easy to setup and to use from your phone/Alexa/Siri.
For techie people who are thinking of starting your first connected lights, don’t use third party cheap bulbs, these are the best you can get!
Update to my first review, below…
It a good bright light though.
Sorry review Excellent RECOMMEND Best bit
These are Bluetooth so can turn on light or off brighten any were miles from home great home security one living room one bedroom
I can see a film being watched Now HOME ALONE
Sorry il stop
A very nice lamp.
I hope you found this review helpful.
I would definitely reccomend.
Would recommend.
Would recommend.
But with extreme confidence.
Happy days! My life is easier, and you should buy them too…
Have you bought them yet?
They are in your basket you say?
You should click buy now!
Fantastic lights that work very well as described. They connect straight away to any Bluetooth phone.
Please note you don’t get any of the automation features unless you hook them up to a Hue Bridge.
Also they are simple bulbs. Even with a Hue Bridge you cannot change the “whiteness” of the bulb If that makes sense.
I’d suggest for anyone dipping their toe into smart bulbs to go for the hue bridge pack. The lights that come with it contain more features.
