I’ve upgraded from a SONY soundbar to this. Don’t care much for the integrated Alexa thing but the sound is really full, higher-fidelity, and markedly better. I like the adjustable bass and the emphasizing of the “voice” (which is really just bringing out more mid and high-range frequencies in the sound). I did some research and this was one of the top 3 recommended soundbars in this price-band.
Easy to set up on my old Panasonic tv
Used the digital optical cable and hdmi as I have not got an arc hdmi.
But the sound is very good for 240
I didn’t really want to spend any more than that and did a lot of research on which one to buy and settled for this one.
I wanted to down size my setup from a Sonos and hi-fi amp/speakers combo and took a punt in this.
The bar itself works well with music, movies, and games. It’s not quite hi-fi standard, but it’s a fraction of the size so I wasn’t expecting miracles. That said, I don’t think they could have made a better bar in this size.
Bass is decent, the mids are fully present, and the high isn’t shrill. It’s very comfortably in the middle sound wise, it’s not flat, but it’s not especially bright or warm either.
The Alexa features work as well as any echo, which is good, because the remote is worthless. The buttons are very spongey, and don’t always fire. You also need to be pointing right at it.
Alexa, TV and Spotify (via IPhone) work well and use the POLK in unison with other echo dot devices to create house communication.
I bought this fir my 86 year old dads smart TV.
Particularly because it has Alexa.
When I connected it and it switched to the speaker – even my dad said wow that’s better isn’t it.
Job done
Too little control, the remote control has to be pointed directly to the sound bar.
I found myself rewinding to find out what was being said on programs, no matter how loud, I couldn’t distinguish words so thought I’d try this .. brilliant even on a lower setting it works for me I love it, a very happy bunny
Mr K here. Having gone through an array of sound bars and been disappointed in one way or another I decided to try something a lot more premium.
I bought mine from the Amazon Marketplace for 199 so a few quid off was welcome. I think the HDMI cable might have been missing but everything looked brand new and unused.
Sound >> Just amazing, totally amazing. It really does give you the ability to fine tune voice, bass and treble settings and although basic they do work well. The voice adjustment is really useful for streams or broadcasts with dodgy voice separation. I really don’t how they get so much out of this gadget, there is some audio witchcraft going on. It’s not Atmos but my goodness can it separate channels for a wide soundscape. Volume increments are good on my Panasonic 4K TV using HDMI ARC. No discernible voice sync issues but if you look hard enough they are there (but that may be in the original production). Bass is good but variable. Let’s take Netflix… with 5.1 bass can be pretty deep, defined and certainly cinematic. Amazon Prime is similar although Prime is rubbish compared to the audio quality on Netflix (the dynamic range is terrible). TV is variable and I guess this is down to the broadcast in question (BBC is generally great). Music is excellent through streaming and I guess you could hook another device up with optical.
React Sub >> I’ve got the React sub and it is loud and defined! Too loud in fact and lacks any volume control which is a big problem. That said, our home is sound sensitive for various reasons. For 5.1 you will love it but note, you will annoying the neighbours and anyone upstairs. Can you manage without one? Yes, but if you like movie punch or music bass get the sub and move into a detached house or sound proofed room.
SR2 Satellite surround speakers >> Get them. They are excellent although a bit pricey. What a difference they make to music, films, TV etc. Keep in mind that they need mains sockets to supply power so positioning them can be a challenge. The sound bar music mode has an “All Stereo” mode which isn’t mentioned in the manual. This gives you a rear split which is great and works really well for immersive music (or TV on stereo broadcasts). In movie mode you get pseudo surround from stereo broadcasts.
Alexa >> I don’t really use Alexa as I’m a bit old fashioned. That said I might use it more in the future. The Alexa app has basic sound settings and tbh is woefully underwhelming. You can of course zone the sound bar which is useful.
Remote >> It’s okay but not up to Sony or Panasonic quality. The buttons are not very nice to press and it does give you dumbed down controls. It’s a massive oversight that all of the audio options are not available in the Alexa app – I think this is just plain lazy on Polk’s part.
Overall performance >> It’s a premium product and it does compete head on with my Marantz 5.1 surround system which has good speakers and a dedicated sub. Okay so it doesn’t have the shear soundscape of a dedicated 5.1, 7.1 or 9.2 systems but that’s not what it’s for. It offers a cinematic experience in a small virtually wire free package. Music is particularly good on it with Spotify. Suffice to say that the surround systems is being retired.
Firmware updates >> No idea. I hope it does this automatically.
Versatility >> It has ARC and Optical. ARC is better because of the higher bandwidth although I haven’t tried optical yet. The sound bar can (apparently) learn your volume control on your TV remote which is very useful for optical but I haven’t tested this.
Value for money >> This is subjective. I think it is good value considering what you get. Another 250 will get you something with all the bells and whistles but that doesn’t guarantee it will be sonically better. Personally I would buy the whole surround kit with the sub (when it comes into stock). You can always turn the sub off if it gets too much. It is well built and excellent quality apart from the remote.
Would I send it back? This for me is the deal breaker. No is the answer, it is everything I wanted apart from the minor issues (which is not unusual with tech).
Very pleased with this sound bar, excellent sound quality. Coupled with the Alexa functionality it’s perfect for our lounge. Would definitely recommend
First off – why are you shouting, Alexa! Seriously!
This sound bar is excellent, the alexa paired with a great audio output is a winner, but the audio is lower than alexa, so when you have alexa at a good level, the audio is low, and when the audio is good, alexa sounds like she’s screaming!
Out of the box, first impressions were, this was pretty large! it’s not just long, its quite deep too. Think, as deep as an older gen alexa (Not the newer sphere type, the older disc type). It can be easily mounted to a wall, but needs mounted to studs or a brick wall, never ever boast or plasterboard only. Much too heavy for that.
The audio experience is great, it really is. Polk never disappoint here, it’s really sharp even at volume. I find the balance of this quite good and I can’t imagine what it would be like with the subwoofer. I have no been able to try the subwoofer.
The remote is ok, and the alexa controls are good. I thought Alexa might do a little more specifically with the speaker but its like having one connected via bluetooth.
Overall, I think this is a great product. Connected via arc or optical, it will sound excellent with your tv. Or even standalone!
Easy setup works great with surround speaker and bought for a good price.
We had a few issues trying to connect Alexa in the beginning, we had to factory reset a few times and turn the mobile data off of my phone for the sound bar to connect to WiFi. After a few goes we got there in the end. Sound quality is good and it’s easy to connect to your sky/tv remote
CORRECTION – it took while but it has now updated itself and now Spotify voice commands work.
One major problem. There seems to be a bug when using Spotify voice commands. The Alexa works fine for controlling lights and volume but it will not play any music from Spotify using verbal commands. Works fine if you use your Spotify app on your phone though. Hoping this will be fixed as happy with the sound bar aside from this.
Great bit of kit sounds great for TV and playing music
Our Panasonic Bedroom TV has poor sound so we used a cheap sound bar that was an improvement but was difficult to control the volume and had to mute to use Alexa.
This does exactly what is says on the box and after what was a very confusing installation it worked very well, the magic word Alexa immediately mutes to TV sound to receive a command. You can simply say “Alexa, volume 50” to set TV sound midway which also alters the Alex volume to match.
The sound quality is very good for size of speaker and dialogue is clear. Much better than the original sound bar or if playing music the Echo
To connect to Alexa you are told to scan a bar code on rear of unit which is difficult if like me you have wall mounted it and when I did try just stated error connecting to Alexa. What I found is simply powering it up and then ask the Alex app to find it which it does as a new device and is then quite happy.
I do think Polk simply use the Alexa dot device less its speaker glued into a recess in the top of bar as it looks identical. It concerned me that this means he 4 microphones all point upwards towards the TV. While not quite as responsive as my now redundant Echo it still works well. I have distance of 100mm from top to TV frame which is enough to see and operate the buttons if required.
Nice that they include an Optical and HDMI leads, I used the former as much simpler to connect.
As reported else ware the Mains lead has a Euro plug with adaptor so this was replaced by a spare Sky one as looks much neater.
Remote looks OK but do not see point of it as Alexa covers it all.
The sound quality is on the higher end for this price bracket, alexa integration is really well done with a remote controll button so you can listen to your music and not keep shouting her name till she finally listens.
Integration with the TV with hdmi and digital audio are seemless really happy with my purchase.
This is a superb soundbar, offering high quality and very loud performance combined with a fantastic Alexa solution.
The soundbar arrived well packaged and with very easy to follow instructions for installation and set up. I haven’t wall mounted mine but the steps for doing so look very easy to follow. Mine is sat flat on the tv stand. What I really appreciate is the relatively low profile so that it should sit comfortably in front of the tv without blocking any key infrared points for the remotes – it certainly does for mine.
The unit looks very smart too. Material is wrapped all around the speaker and the curved look to it looks really good. The Alexa controls on the top are both discrete but modelled exactly as the Dot so that anyone familiar with one would be able to work with this immediately. Not that it is particularly difficult anyway!
In terms of performance the sound quality is sharp, precise and even when pushed to higher volumes it remains crisp and clear. I have tried the Polk Voice function and I was very impressed. I was expecting it to be like many of these sorts of things on other devices and be rather underwhelming but on this speaker the Polk Voice is really good. The clarity it provides to dialogue is both impressive and also very welcome, as I tend to find a lot of more modern films and tv series suffer from muffling speech under background effects or music. The Polk Voice works nicely in bringing Clarity to speech. The virtual surround sound also works very well, and watching films that have Dolby Digital really shows of the quality of this speaker.
I’m not sure that the optional sub-woofer would be necessary for most people, as this unit as it is provides a really nice level of bass. Certainly more than enough for my ears and enough to provide rubble and depth when a film requires it. Yes, it isn’t quite as impactful as separate amplifier and good floor standing speakers, but the space this takes up plus the lower cost makes this a really excellent solution. Having a full AV set up on my main tv that cost around 1k for amp and speakers I’d say you would need to spend a good 500+ to equal the quality of this soundbar. I’m certainly very happy with this as a great solution.
Overall I think for the quality, flexibility and the space required this is an excellent option. Add to that the flexibility of having Alexa built in and I’d highly recommend purchasing this for a living room or entertaining space.
I was a touch dubious when first testing this soundbar as I thought that it looked, from the photos, a bit cheap looking. I was therefore really pleased when unboxing to find this is a really great looking device that has a real premium feel to it.
I love the low profile as this will work great with almost any TV and it fits brilliantly under my Sony 55″.
Set up was so simple as soon as I turned it on and went to the Alexa App it popped up on screen and with the simple press of a button it was ready.
Considering this doesn’t have a subwoofer ( you do have the option to add ) the sound was great and delivered great mid to low notes. It also can pack a punch when it comes to volume, really loud and doesn’t distort.
There is a simple blue led light that acknowledges the Alexa command and these are heard via the mics even when loud music is being played.
Overall a great device that would be perfect with the optional subwoofer.
Whether you’ll find the Polk appealing is going to depend on what you want to use the soundbar for. In my case, I have it connected to a cheap Samsung TV, so in the evening it’s used to provide a stunning sound upgrade, bringing a richness and depth to movies and TV shows that has to be heard to be believed.
During the day, we use the absolutely faultless Alexa integration. It actually looks as though an Echo Dot has been dropped into the top of the unit – complete with the familiar volume, silence and wake buttons. The Alexa app recognises the Polk soundbar exactly as it would any echo device, so if you’re used to these, this is a complete doddle. Speak to the soundbar and Alexa’s voice emerges, but it’s when you ask Alexa to play music that the magic happens. Sound of wonderful quality and depth emerges – with a surprisingly powerful bass. So, this soundbar passes double muster, replacing our music system and Echo devices in that room AND upgrading our TV watching experience.
Sound quality is easily on a par with the Bose and Philips systems I’ve tested recently, but ease of set-up and use is in a different league. For me, as a multi-media user, this is the perfect soundbar.
I’d expected to need some technical help setting up this soundbar, but no such thing … it’s very straightforward and as easy as setting up any Alexa-enabled device. It’s a lovely, slim soundbar that fits neatly and unobtrusively under my TV. Just connect to the TV and pair with Alexa to have your Alexa play through this speaker.
The sound is brilliant … clear and balanced. I love this!
Perceived as a possible upgrade for an existing soundbar, this “POLK AUDIO React Soundbar for Surround Sound, TV Speakers for Home Cinema Sound System, Alexa Built-In, Night / Movie / Music-Mode, Wall Mountable, Universal Compatibility” offers the simplicity and near certainty that there will be an available HDMI port on most modern TVs with which to connect; it supports ARC (two-way data linkage between source and connected audio receiver or speaker system) which may not always be offered. By using HDMI it allows TVs that do not support Bluetooth as some models do, or an optical connection that tends to be available on TVs with larger screens while some mid-size and small-screen models, and many older models usually do not but it remains an option if needed; optical connectivity is absent from every TV currently used in a bedroom and none is of an age where replacement is imminently planned.
The sound-bar deviates from most in that it appears to be fabric-covered and also lacks the hard, sharp corners and edges that most others employ; here they are rounded-off and far more pleasing to the eye although intended to be heard rather than seen. There is a thin illuminated strip at the front when active and the controls have blue markings, otherwise it is the usual all-black. The older model shares its branding with the lounge TV and includes a floor-standing mid-sized sub-woofer. Although now about 3 years old, memory is that its pricing at that time significantly less than this and where a matching Polk sub-woofer would raise the outlay by 75%, approaching three times that then paid. However, the older model does not support Alexa, includes a remote control unit, offers HDMI and optical connectivity and includes on-board button controls if ever needed. Conversely, there is no provision for expansion or surround-sound.
This Polk sound-bar offers virtual-surround sound capabilities and allows the addition of both a matching Polk rear speaker (product-page phrasing suggests a single rather than a pair although pricing information suggests a pair) and sub-woofer if desired for true surround sound and deeper bass performance respectively, but they are not essential; there is no obviously provided data that concerns placement distance from the main unit but that may be included with the relevant components. Using a single rear speaker would be unusual if true as they are typically employed as a matching left-right pair to extend the existing stereo sound stage.
Pricing for both named expansion options is provided on the product page. If individually purchased, adding the sub-woofer (apparently far larger than most) and rear speaker set will increase outlay to almost 600 but excludes a remote control which is not separately available. There is a further and clearly more economical option that is described as ‘the Surround Sound pack’ that includes the main unit plus both expansion options and a remote control at only 587 at the date of this review. Wall-mounting is an option although it can be placed in front of a TV, behind it or on a shelf beneath it as is most convenient. Ideally, it should be at a height that is not too low and near to ear level. The sub-woofer is floor-standing and should ideally be located in a corner or close to a wall.
In addition to its on-board controls, it also supports Alexa with its verbal commands. That appears to negate the need for a mobile phone app to make volume and other adjustments and for a remote control although one is available within an available ‘pack’. Alexa may prove useful but it is not without its issues – it and another similar system are all but abandoned within the household due to excessive reactivity and the constant annoyance both systems cause with unneeded messages, announcements etc in response to innocent comments and sometimes TV audio. Its size of 86 cm (approx. 34-inches) dictates suitability for a minimum screen size of about 42-inches while those of about 47-inches and larger are probably better-suited. With a smaller screen, it will look out-of-place.
The sound quality is very good as-is and there is a reasonable level of bass produced although the deep rumbling effects that a sub-woofer will allow and that certain action movies demand for their included sound-effects will not be fully realised with the system as supplied; for soaps, sport, TV movies and similar fare, the audio quality it achieves is more than adequate and can be a significant improvement upon the TV’s internal speakers. If used primarily for music, some styles will also benefit from the addition of a sub-woofer for their included gut-thumping bass rhythms. Currently, the addition of the sub-woofer is not an immediate need but may be at a later date; the rear speaker kit is not under consideration.
There is the potential that the sound-bar could be used with a PC and large monitor combinations especially were A-B input switching for two sources (PC and TV) is permissible. Many desktops and laptops offer a single HDMI socket, some two or more, and a few offer optical connectivity. However, with 2.1 PC speaker systems offering a high quality of sound and available at far lower prices, it may not be economical or advisable to purchase one for that express role.
A smart kit (Polk Audio Soundbar) that has proved very easy to set-up including connection
to Alexa (which is relevant to myself)
The sound quality is indeed what I’d hoped for when requesting the package (the sound can
be adjusted to suit)
The set comes with both a HDMI and OPTIC lead for your preferred connection (included)
The unit is a little wider than my previous one, so had to slide the TV back a little, however
with all the features included within the bar (no separate sound-woofter) you have all you
need in the one unit.
I feel the price to be sensible in terms of the quality you get, you can pay a whole lot more
for branded sound-bars which to be honest may be no better.
Can honestly recommend this kit, I feel you’ll be, like myself well pleased.
Absolute bargain especially when you hear the superb sound quality and feel the craftsmanship. You simply can not buy better for the price.
New TV meant new soundbar as previous set up was Samsung curved bar.
Sits nicely in front of my LG CX and doesn’t obstruct the screen/infrared. Good looking piece of kit.
Sound quality is fantastic and the preset modes work well. Has plenty of bass even without subwoofer, but may upgrade later. Alexa integration works well.
Very immersive sound which although not true surround is a great upgrade to any TV. Surprised how good it is. Highly recommended.
We were happy with the Polk Command bar but got the Polk React for another room.
It sounds much better, and we find we don’t need the sub woofer…there’s more than enough bass without it! Very good sound that really fills the room.
When this arrived I thought wow it’s in a huge box, once opened I could not believe the size of this speaker as it is definetely not slim. It looked very nice although a bit heavy to be mounted on a wall I don’t know why the weight of it if it would be safe. I could not connect this to my tv as it needs a fitting that my tv does not have that I thought a bit disappointing as this was meant to connect to any tv, just not mine. So all I can actually do is use Alexa which is absolutely fabulous as I love having my house full of Alexa products. The sound quality is superb and I’m really happy with that. I can connect my Bluetooth and listen to my music, which is great, I find this very easy to install and operate and I’m female to do this. It looks great as my picture shows, just if your buying as a speaker for your tv make sure you have an audio fitting in the back of your tv for this.
I have recently purchase this sound bar and I am amazed. The sound quality is amazing. The device is extremely easy to set up. it comes with easy to set up instructions and even a guide to hand the speaker from the wall. The speaker has four options to listen in different ways, night mode, sport mode, music mode and video mode. These sounds sound incredible in the different modes. I actually felt like I was in the cinema watching films in video mode. The sound is so clear that you could even hear a pin drop. I fully recommend this speaker.
This soundbar allowed my home to get smarter, this is an amazing addition to my current Amazon ecosystem. Whilst it is a soundbar with amazing sound, it also provides Alexa which is fully integrated.
This is very easy and simple to set up, provided was a HDMI and optical cable (for two different ways of connecting to TV) also is a remote for the soundbar with batteries included. To set up was as easy as it is to set up any Alexa product through the Alexa app.
This product comes standalone and is affordable as is but if I wanted to increase my virtual sound experience, Polk does offer additional products which seamlessly connect.
As a stand-alone speaker it fits perfectly under my 65″ tv and sits nicely on my cabinet not taking too much space. It looks sleek with its fabric material in dark grey, it almost camouflages in some lighting as the immersive sound plays whilst allowing me to hear every word of dialog.
The most amazing this is the proprietary technology of the voice adjust that Polk provides, I’ve always struggled with hearing dialog in movies and tv shows but with the Polk soundbar I’ve noticed I can adjust the soundbar to provide more emphasis on the dialog so everything can be heard but also doesn’t hinder the performance of the bass and treble.
Finally the Alexa aspect of this sound bar works perfectly, it hears my instructions from every corner of the room and also provides me with a mute option for privacy when I’m not using Alexa
This is an amazing product with state of the art technology, you wouldn’t go amiss if you purchased this as I don’t regret it.
Love this sound bar! It looks stylish and the sound quality is amazing. It was easy to set up just plug in and go. I have also connected it to my phone, but haven’t used it with alexa yet. I’m not a big user of alexa so I don’t know if this sound bar is a bit wasted on me, but honestly I can’t fault it. The remote control came with batteries which is always an added bonus
So please to have accepted a recommend for this product as it was not a name I woulkd have gone for but so glad I did. From the moment I unpacked its been a simple joy. What a sound.. just brilliant Thank you
Very easy to setup – we had it hooked up to the home media PC and consoles in a couple of mins.
Aalexa integration is a nice touch, it’s our first smart speaker and we’re having lots of fun exploring what it can do.
POLK AUDIO React Soundbar
A really fantastic soundbar purchase, and not disappointed. Setup was really easy and took a minute straight out the box, I had my settings saved with Amazon so the Alexa part went in automatically. Really appreciated the HDMI cable etc being supplied with the unit. Looks and feels solid & more importantly sounds incredible especially watching a movie. There are 4 modes on this soundbar but you can adjust to suit your own ears and the addition of Alexa takes the Polk to another level turning it into a fantastic music system. This soundbar ticks all the boxes and I’m delighted with my purchase. PS there is a remote control with the unit but it can be fully controlled using Alexa voice commands.
I already own an Echo 4th generation and an original Echo as well as TV with Alexa built in.
Unboxing was straightforward, the React comes well packaged with a good length HDMI cable as well as an optical lead as well as the well shaped remote with batteries and a quick start guide which was clear enough to understand and well presented.
Build quality it’s solid, all fabric mesh except the connection ports and Alexa controls but is slim enough to tuck under the TV with ease. As with most soundbars unlikely to win any awards!
Although it initially launched into setup mode on power on I needed to manually enter setup mode again for the device to be found on the Alexa App but after that (and a self delivered software update via Wifi) it worked smoothly.
The soundbar is connected in my case via an eARC HDMI and was recognised by the Samsung TV automatically.
There is one small orange power light on the front and a bar above that replicates the usual Echo colour schemes and patterns (orange, blue etc). The bar also visualises the volume too. You cannot see it at all unless it’s lit up which is good.
Alexa microphone response seems excellent and she hasn’t failed to respond to date,
despite any other noise from the TV which is great and it also hasn’t picked up anything said on screen either so that seems to be better than some other big brand ones. Basically you can treat it like another Echo and forget about it
Sound quality wise although I have to say the Echo is tremendous for its size. The React feels like that device turned up to 150% with a more rounded sound, perhaps a little less aggressive on low frequencies but very smooth across the whole range with no distortion and midrange is very tight and well presented.
On movies there is much improved depth and weight to the proceedings, dialogue is also good and clear and there is a movie preset mode too.
You can adjust volume, base, ‘voice’ and balance from the remote.
My annoyances so far are that the volume levels between different uses such as music, movies and games seems to vary quite a bit and needs rapid turning down in some cases but that may be user error and needs research, and the remote sometimes seems a touch slower to respond that I might like but that’s often the way with soft buttons rather than actual proper buttons.
Multiroom music / sound works seemlessly with the other devices which is good as that was a main driver for the purchase over other brands.
No soundbar is going to replace a full AV system but if you haven’t got the space or option to add the cables or plugs and want a well rounded and responsive Alexa based solution for your front room that will also double as a great all round enhancement to your TV experience setup you could do a lot worse than the 249 Polk React.
