We use these mostly for weddings and the audio quality doesn’t disappoint.

    Buon prodotto semi professionale.

In the good old days, newer was generally better. I’ve had my eye on this filmmaker kit for a while, but then Rode brought out the much smaller, and newer Wireless Go. Reading reviews of Rode’s newer offering caused me some concern regarding reliability and operating distance, so I ended up plumping for the tried and well-tested Filmmaker kit.

This arrives with the transmitter and lavalier (lav) mic packed in one box, and the receiver packed in another. All you need to get going are 4 x AA batteries (not supplied) – two for each unit. A nice touch is that the lav comes in a little drawstring pouch which makes it easy to prevent its extremely thin cable from getting tangled up with everything else in your bag, and also to stop the supplied wind muff from getting lost. Although the lav cable is extremely thin it comes with a strangulation warning because it is strengthened with kevlar and so, presumably, will not break easily.

They say set up is easy. It isn’t. There is a button on the receiver marked CH. The instruction sheet says that you press this to change channel. What it omitted to point out is that you need to press the red button that’s hidden inside the battery compartment first. This makes the channel number flash and only then will the CH button change the channel number. I needed to do an internet search to discover this crucial bit of information.

Pairing (pressing both hidden red buttons together) is supposed to be almost instant. It took me about five attempts before the pairing was successful. Again the internet revealed that you just press each one and let go. The instructions just said press, so I kept pressing until I got fed up with nothing happening. Even though I was watching closely I’ve no idea what I did differently when the two units eventually paired. You know they’ve paired because TX and a battery level appears on the receiver screen underneath the RX. Also a level meter appears in the centre of this tiny screen.

There is a gain switch in each unit to boost the signal 10 or 20db. It seems best to start with these at 0db and only boost the signal if the levels are too low. This is to avoid having to boost the signal with the camera’s inferior audio amplifier.

The receiver is designed primarily to sit in the camera’s accessory shoe and has a cheap plastic fitting to lock the receiver in place. The receiver is also fitted with a belt clip, not that I see this as being of much benefit to those of us who want to record into a portable recorder rather than into the camera. And for me the biggest problem with this kit is keeping the receiver and my recorder together and it looks like it might be rubber band time – hardly a quality solution.

Build quality of the transmitter and receiver is not great but it’s ok. The battery cover is a touch loose on the receiver, and neither unit looks as though it would survive being dropped.

That said it is exactly as I expected it to be so there were no surprises, other than inadequate instructions and having to do internet searches to get the two units talking to each other. That is unacceptable. Still there’s no app, so that’s a huge blessing.

I tested this at home. I connected the receiver to a portable recorder and attached mic and transmitter to me. The receiver was left on my bed upstairs while I walked downstairs, through the house, down to the bottom of the garden (70ft from receiver and one brick wall/window), up to the front gate (30ft from receiver plus two brick walls) and I was giving a running commentary the whole time.

When I played back the recording through headphones I noticed clarity of voice and consistent volume level. I have absolutely no complaints and though I realise this is well short of the 100m claimed by Rode for the transmission distance for this unit, in practical terms it is highly unlikely that I’ll be filming anyone talking more than 70ft away so for me I’m quite happy with my initial tests and have no doubts that this will give me the wireless connection that I need for good clear audio.

One thing worthy of note, there is nothing directional with this mic. When I was listening to the recording I’d made I noticed several vehicles going past in the road at the front. At the time I didn’t notice them, probably because I’m so used it and was concentrating on my commentary. Still the mic picked those extraneous sounds up very clearly, so you will need to watch out for environmental sounds/noises when utilising this equipment. Another thing I noticed when assembling/disassembling the various wires. Rode has supplied locking connectors for both the lav mic and the camera/recorder connector. The locking mechanism has a smaller diameter than the rubber part of the plug. It is also quite narrow. This makes it difficult to get hold of and rotate independently of the plug in order to screw out or undo it. All that kept happening was that the rotating part would stick and I’d end up rotating the plug and wire. While I like the idea of securing the wires against accidental, and unnoticed, disconnection, the implementation is sadly lacking.

Conclusion: Sound quality is excellent. Build quality is ok, but plastic, and the battery compartment door on the receiver rattles. No problems with brick walls and a reasonable filming distance. Mic is good quality but picks up background sounds a little too well. Haven’t tested the wind muff, but the foam cover gave clear sound outside in a light breeze. All in all I’m quite happy with it, it performs exactly as I expected, but having to search the internet for set-up instructions that work and the fact it seems just a little plasticky cause me to knock a star off.

Its a bit bulky but the sound quality is great compared to other cheaper options I had tried. The reach of the signal is not massive but I haven’t filmed from afar. I think they are worth the cos

I’m a public speaker/Celebrant so I use this for weddings, baby namings etc. (funerals if outside) works great. Has a mute button for when you go pee! (So you don’t have to unclip it and the Mike). Bit fiddly I THOUGHT to set up BUT it was user error! It can be used with AA batteries, rechargeable batteries or a usb/plug combo.
Mine kept connecting to each other then shutting down. Turns out my batteries weren’t full on power. Once I plugged in or used fully charged batteries it worked a treat! I wouldn’t want to change to any other system. Love it!!

If you are starting out with filming and need to record audio without the trail of wires behind you, this is the perfect set to get!

This is very sleek looking, extremely simple to use and everything you need is included with it. I used the receiver with a ZOOM recorder and only needed an attachment for the 3,5mm audio cable to be able to plug into the ZOOM. After a few mins of playing around you can figure out the audio setting you need to have and after that you can start your recording.

I have had these for a long time and for most of lockdown they sat in the box but recently I began doing a lot more recordings and out they came. Other than a battery leaking in one of the units (my fault for leaving the batteries in them – don’t do that) they worked great. If you are on a tight budget but need something that is good quality, I would recommend this set.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersToday I see this product is shipped and sold by Amazon. When I bought it last month I was sold by MusicSound Inc. It came from Hong Kong, but in the predicted time. I don’t like the RODE, it is way bigger than the Shure FP1/FP5 I have been using, and has worse background noise. Part of this is I use a Countryman headset mic with the Shure, and the RODE came with a lav mic. Get this, to return it, I had to pay 62 bucks in international postage, and I wonder if they will even give my money back. (Update, they did.) Since this is Amazon, I am confident I will get my money back sooner or later, but not sure if that will be a hassle. No matter what I am out the 62 dollars shipping. Lesson, always buy “Sold by Amazon, Shipped by Amazon, free returns.”

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs a film student hoping to get a decent personal mic, this was a great purchase. Good price range for what it is- its not a Sennheiser EW 112P, but its much cheaper with decent quality sound. My order only came with the very fuzzy wind guard mic cover and not the smaller one, but since I did my recent shoot outside that worked out. I was actually really surprised how well it isolated the voice over from the wind, I was really worried about some parts but as a whole the sound came out great. I wish it came with a case since the transmitter and receiver are bigger, so I’m buying a case for them to avoid dust etc.

All in all, glad I got this compared to other cheaper options, but also happy this was more in my price range; wish it had a case and the other mic cover, and decent quality sound with solid windguard.

Good for a student price range

Having tried the Rode Wireless Go which seemed to cut out even at 15m in direct line of sight I was sceptical that I’d be able to get wireless sound to work. The RodeLink Filmmaker Kit is fantastic! My talent (wife) walked about 50m in both directions (i.e. transmitter facing towards and away from the receiver) and there was zero drop out. The quality of the mic is also superb and nadles wind noise really well.

I had to return them because they were over kill for my project. Great quality but I can get the same quality out of a lav plugged into a newer iPhone. If you’re shooting a feature film, these are the go to. But an indie film or short, these are like using a Cadillac for fetching the mail at the end of the driveway.

Buying this mic was worth it! You just plug and go. It s light and strong. You don’t have to even think about the audio when filming or editing. When you plug this in and put it on the person talking, it syncs the audio to the video and it does all the work. Mad! It’s quite a lot of money but if you are semi professional or professional, get this product; you might need it.

Only downside is that it is slightly (very slightly) bulky for talent. The quality is great, it’s easy as hell to use and overall for the price it is WELL worth it.

Affordable price for a decent entry level wireless mic. You have to be careful with taking batteries out – can be a bit fiddly. It’s also quite a bit unit although pretty light weight.

Great product if you are looking to improve sound quality of your videos, I tried it for indoors filming only. It’s pretty expensive, so only buy it if you are looking to make an investment in your video work. One important aspect is that it hooks directly to your camera, so you don’t need to go through the syncing process.

I’ve used this product on several weddings and really pleased I invested in it. I am now able to remotely monitor recordings. I’ve not run out of battery on any event I have covered and range has never been an issue. The audio quality is good enough for wedding videography and come alive with a little EQ during post production.

Perfect for client testimonials and narrative work. Produced 2 documentary pieces and 3 corporate videos with these so far and they’re brilliant. Now for the nerd stuff:
    – Multi channel selection makes interference avoidable and you can run multiple of these like 9 or something in the same room on different channels so conference and convention work just got easier for you voxpop people
    – easy to hit between -6db and -12db. The receiver has adjustment increments of 0db, +10db and +20db i believe and the transmitter has 0db, -10db, and -20db (basically you can turn it up from your end, they can turn it down from theirs).
    – mute button available on the transmitter for well versed subjects and you can unmute it from the receiver end. The LCD screen shows it is muted over the WHOLE screen so you know 100%
    – locking nuts are cool but I’ve already lost one so hey
    – place them lower than you think. These pick up vocal bass like mad but same time it’s rich and warm in sound.
    – if you’re feeding into your camera (for example Panasonic gh5) then turn your preamps DOWN as much as possible (so for gh5 it’s -12db) and then fine tune your sound through the RX and TX lavs. The sound is MUCH cleaner without your preamps getting in the way!

Rodelink works straight out the box, really simple to set up, and you should be recording in the time it takes to fit the radio mic and switch it on! Range is reasonable, but I’ve never achieved a good signal beyond 50 meters, this doesn’t affect what I do, so not an issue. Battery life is excellent, always enough juice for a few hours recording! Build seems good on the RX and TX units, but the wire for the included lav mic is very thin and will be the weak link if not treated carefully. An alloy hot shoe mount would have been nice, this feel a lilt bit cheap, but it does the job. A case would have been useful, Zoom products include them….

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersMi ritengo estremamente soddisfatto di questi radiomicrofoni, infatti recentemente ho acquistato la seconda coppia.

Consigliatissimi!!

La soluzione perfetta per un Videomaker!

I bought this kit to pair with my Panasonic GH5 and I am really happy. The sound quality is really good and I like the microphone provided. Battery life could be better. The only downside is the size of the transmitter. Looks really bulky (even though is not heavy being made of plastic)

Ordered this following reviews on here and other sites. RODE are excellent, theres no doubting their products, i also have a RODE NTG 2 Shotgun mic and Rode Boom Pole.

My only surprise with this was that when using it directly with a Camera via the mini jack, the levels were very loud, My camera, SONY NEX VG20, doesn’t have a volume control, the levels cannot be adjusted, so this probably didn’t help.

I bought the XLR adapter and plugged it into my TASCAM DR-40 and the result was excellent. Crystal clear sound and zero interference. The mic cable crackles a bit when touched, but if you hold still its perfectly fine. You could buy a better mic and keep the transmitter / receiver if you felt the need but this really is a very good quality product. I am impressed.
