Had a few microwaves over the years but this one is the best we’ve had so far. The 800w heats things up REALLY quick!

This is a microwave from Russell Hobbs (not to be confused with a gas hob from the brand Russell Microwaves). It looks a great deal nicer than my previous one which was an originally white model that had since yellowed to a rather unpleasant colour. However, my previous microwave had an analog dial for setting the time. I know we’re in the twenty first century now, but I actually miss the dial. As a former professional safe-cracker, it was well within the scope of my expertise to instantly turn it to the correct time for a Findus lasagne. I am rather disappointed by the button which turns the microwave on/adds thirty seconds to the cooking time. While it would ideal to simply tap at this (for anything up to three minutes or so) the lack of sensitivity makes for a sluggish process. The button is also small and without texture, to distinguish by touch. It was honestly a lot simpler to just spin a dial.

I can’t fault the cooking performance of the microwave. It makes short work of a Chicago Town microwave pizza. Indeed, be sure to reduce the cooking time to only 2:30 or you’ll be left with a truly sorry looking atrocity. If you ask me, they haven’t be the same since they robbed us of those little foil discs. Anyhow, although this is a generally good microwave, the performance of the quickstart button is annoying.

Is there a house without a microwave oven these days? Like a tea kettle, this has become a must-have accessory. A good microwave should not just be functional but also look good. And this one looks superb. The mirrored front glass is very easy to clean and looks superb. The Control panel is easy to understand and use. It is a touch control panel, but not a cheap one that does not always react to touch, but a good one. Works even if touched with a damp finger.

I never had a microwave with a multi-stage cooking function. Took some time to get used to this, but now I use it a lot. Say you want to heat up meatballs with gravy. In one stage process, the gravy will become hot quicker and start to burn, while meatballs are still cold. Multi-stage allows you to heat the meatballs first and then the sauce without the exploded fat mess.

Six pre-set cook menus are helpful. I look at them this way: engineers have spent numerous hours trying to work out the best and optimal timing and power levels for cooking different products. So why should I ignore these and try to invent something that is already invented? I just press the button, and voila.

As with most microwave ovens, cleaning is straightforward. Glass plate is removable and dishwasher safe. Inside is covered with some type of easy to clean enamel paint.

CHILD LOCK!!! What a fantastic feature if you, like me, do not want to see the teaspoon sparking inside the oven. My 4-year-old boy does not agree with me, however 🙂

Overall this is a nice microwave. Good looking, easy to use and functional.

As far as solo microwaves go, I think this offers quite a lot of functionality for the price. The touchscreen, multiple cooking cycles and fairly high capacity make this model attractive for me.

I’ve used the microwave mainly for just reheating leftovers, but have also defrosted something and cooked a cake in it as a test. For reheating it performed well, heating quickly and evenly. No problems. Defrosting was ok, I used one of the cycles and it was fine, too. When baking, I felt it cooked quicker than my previous microwave that was the same power at 800w, so if in doubt set it for a little less than you think – can always add more time if necessary!

At 20L it’s a reasonable capacity, but externally it’s still fairly compact which I like. How it looks is quite important to me and this is ok, it’s quite minimal and unobtrusive, but I find the mirror style door quite hard to keep clean.

In terms of quality, the latest Which? Review of microwaves doesn’t test this specific model, but as a bit of a guide, Russell Hobbs as a microwave brand was about mid table of the 20 or so brands tested, scoring 74% overall. Having said that, several of the Russell Hobbs microwaves tested for 2022 were classed as best buys, so there’s lots of positives, and if anything does go wrong there’s a 1 year warranty included.

This is rather good. Whether defrosting, reheating or cooking this Russell Hobbs shows why they are a brand leader in combining design, functionality and price in an 800w microwave that looks modern and stylish.

This is great in my kitchen and my friend was rather surprised when told how inexpensive this is.
If you are looking for a small microwave than this has to be in your short list .

This is a good modern looking microwave. It has quite a few good features and I think it is reasonably priced. We did receive ours and it seemed to have gotten a knock so the leg needed a little reinforcing, as it was wobbling a little. Other than that, it is a good microwave and defrosts food quickly and without any hassles.

Review for Russell Hobbs RHMT2004B 20L 800W Touch Control Digital Solo Microwave in Black with 5 Power Levels, 8 Auto Cook Menus, Defrost Control, Clock & Timer

First thing is the striking modern look of this, with its sliver and black frontage. The door has a full sized handle to allow easy opening when needed. The touch controls are great and response is great. The quick start function is very handy to allow quick operation by starting the micro for 30 seconds (each touch will add 30 seconds). The micro is a 800w with 5 different power levels to suit what you are heating. The 20 litre capacity is good for most heating purposes and makes the overall oven size good for smaller kitchen spaces. A whole of cooking programmes including heating, defrost etc, I haven’t tested many functions yet simply the heating up (which for me will be 95% of my use), which evenly and quickly heats up food. Overall a very capable well priced striking looking well priced kitchen appliance, easy to use and clean.

Russell Hobbs are a big name in kitchenware. This microwave is brilliant. Very large interior, letting you put larger dishes inside and still allowing them to turn. It’s easy to keep clean too. Very nice design, with an almost futuristic quality. The touch system is great and it makes operating the microwave a joy. Very responsive and heats food thoroughly.
