Excellent if given this as much abuse as my petrol hedge trimmer & it still works great.
I’ve used it on privet up to 15mm diameter with no problem you just have to slow down a little.
Compared to the weight of a petrol trimmer it cant be beaten.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI am keen Ryobi ONE+ cordless ONE+ battery fan, owning many Ryobi tools using third party batteries =- 4-5.5A. In the main the Ryobi garden tools are light to use (I am not keen on heavy petrol garden machines — I don’t have loads of upper body strength nor strong wrists nor keen on handling fuel nor inhaling the fumes n or fighting with tools that won’t start etc etc).

A challenge is to understand the different Ryobi battery hedge trimmers on offer – and how to choose…

We have some 300 feet of hedges on our main track alone — and other areas too – as we live on what was a farm. I am in my late 50s so tools must be light and without cords too. Our requirement is beyond the average cut in most gardens. We cut at least twice a year depending on growth.

BACKGROUND: In 2017 I bought a RYOBI OHT1850X cordless extended reach hedge trimmer — ONE system battery. At the time I bought this as a compromise which I thought would work. I didn’t feel that I needed a pole trimmer and felt a standard hedge trimmer wouldn’t have enough reach. I changed my view in 2019. See below. However after 2 and a half years heavyish use the 1850HX motor burnt out, lots of smoke. In fact it had smoked a couple of times shortly after purchase in 2017 when I realised the motor didn’t seem to cut out adequately when it jammed (inevitable) — ie reached a branch slightly too tough to cut etc. I stuck with it. From that point on I was very careful and tried hard not to jam it. Also, the grey handle in the middle came loose a couple of times during my use. I had to screw it back in. The 1850 HX never seemed very powerful . It also seemed unwieldy, overall a design too compromised although it gives you some extra reach, not huge amount in my view after much use. In retrospect before the motor finally burnt out I felt it never quite worked for me overall. However I felt the machine had given back reasonable value — it has done a lot of work – and given I am bought into Ryobi ONE anyway so I considered what to replace it with in the Ryobi ONE range.

REASON FOR PURCHASE IN 2019: I needed a replacement and decided to buy two machines: a Ryobi pole hedge trimmer OPT1845 (ONE system battery again) AND a more standard hedge trimmer OHT1855R (ONE system battery again). That was the right decision.
To me these seem much better designed machines to the 1850HX — less prone to jamming and I suspect the motors do/will more quickly cut out if jamming is a threat – ie that aspect of motor design may have improved — Ryobi don’t say that but that’s how it seems to me. Time will tell. Both machines seem superior in design and complement each other well.

The 45cm Pole trimmer has lots of reach. I have used the extension pole (ie 2.9 metres reach) and this longest length is not easy to manoeuvre but with practice it is very usable for short periods. It is heavy and does strain your arms. Without the pole the reach is still good – and somewhat easier/lighter to use – but you need to set it up for the length you need, of course at the time. We have areas of height and width that require the longest reach. This device works well in my view. This 45cm pole trimmer doesn’t seem to have a smoky breakdown if it jams a moment. I think the design of that aspect is better than my old 1850HX.

Likewise the OHT1855R has same attribute — feels more able to just stop and not smoke (!) and the reach of 55cm is very good. This is a very light machine, ideal for me with lots of hedging etc. I haven’t used the rotating handle just yet. The ‘Hedgetrimmer Sweep’ feature is useful too. However the priority here has always been to just have trimmers that work / last etc — I am not after the very highest quality finish. The finish is good / very good and that is fine by us. Our replacement trimmers seem to have the capability of ‘sawing’ through thicker stems too.

These tools will last a fair time on the larger 5 amp batteries (third party I use), say 30-45 minutes pretty much continuous use. That aspect is no problem if you have 2-3 batteries. I have 6, more than enough as I need a break too!

I use a Ryobi self propelled petrol mower for now and await a good Ryobi battery equivalent. I think that could be a long wait. I need a genuinely strong and durable battery machine and think it will be many years before one will be on sale.

Simply brilliant, Light weight, battery lasts for ages, the lack f a cord makes the job of hedge trimming so much easier and quicker. This is so good I now also own, Ryobi Lawnmower, Extendable Hedge trimmer and lawn edger and strimmer all one+ tools. I highly recommend them all.

I ordered this and when I tried it, it could not cut my hedge’s, they just looked slightly chewed. Amazon sent me a replacement and it works fine, comparing the two side by side, it looked like the first one was incorrectly assembled, so the cutting mechanism was’nt properly coming together. The new one works great though and is a good addition to my other Ryobi Lawn Mower and strimmer. The only thing I would say is that it is quite large and heavy (compared to my previous Bosch hedge cutter), but it is fast and the battery lasts a long time

To be Frank there is better cordless hedge trimmers out there but you will have to pay more than twice as much for.
I bought one with a 2 ah battery included it holds its charge quite well , but I would suggest you buy one with a larger battery to suit your budget.

As usual this product comes up to the usual stand of Ryobi products.Ihave used it in a commercial capacity and trialed it for battery duration it lasted along time using a 5ah 18 volt battery .The trick is to only use the trigger when cutting and stop immediately after cutting in other words short bursts. The occational wd40 sprayed on the cutter helps to stop resin build up on the blade thus keeping free movement.

We have a topped conifer hedge around our property. 2 years ago I had the professionals with the petrol cutters sort the hedge out. Since then I have managed to keep it as they left it by trimming in May and November with this machine. I use a pair of loppers on anything over 1 cm. I have 2 of the weakest batteries, 1 amp? They last when I do the cutting one on charge one working.
I rate this machine & it has paid for itself. Keep it lubed and clean it after each use… look after it!

This is my third Ryobi One +Cordless tool which is the reason why I went for this brand for the hedge trimmer. I already own a Ryobi brad nailer and chain saw and have 1 X 18V – 5 Amh battery which fits all. I have a petrol Stihl hedge trimmer which is very powerful and slices through my hedges when it’s running properly. But this is rare and I’ve had enough of it. I just want to pick up the hedge trimmer and crack on. This is what I did the day I received it. It cut through my privet hedges with no problems at all taking 7 to 8 inches of length off with ease. It’s good at shaping the hedge as well. Clearly a little slower than the petrol hedge trimmer but much lighter and quieter. So I’m happier for it to take a little longer.
I also have Leylandi hedges and again there were no issues with cutting these back up to 6 inches.
Great price of 76.99 with 2-day delivery. Really impressed and considering the price is close to what I will pay for servicing the Stihl version, I am well happy. Next year I will be converting to a battery Lawnmower as I think that battery power has arrived.
My 5amh battery has 4 indicator lights and was at 75% when I started and I still had 1 light illuminated when I finished.
I haven’t timed how long the battery takes to charge as I prepare the charge the day before I intend to use it but I don’t think it is too long. Fully recommend this produc

I already have two other hedge trimmers, a mains one and a two stroke. Of the three, this is the least powerful, but it is my favourite. Really light and comfortable to use, even up a ladder. For thicker branches, its saw action works really well, and it hardly ever jams. The blades are very sharp and it cuts cleanly and fast.

One point, if you are a professional or have a lot of hedge, you need at least one spare battery. A charge lasts me about 40 min.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersAmazing product. I cut my entire humoungus annoying lillandi hedge on one battery charge. Through thick stuff too.
I also have the drills and will be investing in chainsaw and lawnmower in time too.
For people who want more info,
Weight: lightweight and easy to handle
Rotation setting: I wasn’t sure I would use it but oh my what a great feature. Turning it 90 degrees to keep the battery weight to the bottom when cutting meant no wrist pain from twisting it.
Blade gaurd and brush: a handy feature to brush the cuttings away from you when cutting. Especially up a ladder so it isn’t falling at you feet.

All round a very versatile product. Another good instalment to my growing Ryobi collection.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI’ve used a B&D corded hedge trimmer for over 12 years and it’s served me well, but despite the fact that I’m really cautious, I’ve still managed to cut through the cord three times, and choked myself or tripped over the cord many times in between. This thing is a revelation – with a 5amp hour battery it goes on forever – I have a massive garden with a wide variety of hedges and it cuts through almost anything.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersAs a confirmed ONE+ Ryobi fan already – drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, 4m chainsaw, fast charger, various batteries – I could not wait to unwrap the hedge trimmer. With around two hundred yards of hedging of various species, e.g. laurel, privet, firs, hawthorn, it is an important tool and, at seventy, the hedging is a challenge.
I have tried them all – petrol, long/short handled electric – but this beats them all (for most task). Although it obviously does not reach as far as my long-handled, it is much lighter and without the disadvantage of a fifty metres plus of cabling trailing after it.
It is very light, has double safety triggers, the blade swivels easily through 180 degrees and, at 96Db, is not particularly noisy; I usually wear a hard-hat, strimmer helmet anyway with ear protectors and face shield.
I just went out to test it and have just cut one half of the hedging, although I did not intend to but it was difficult to stop myself having fun (sad, I know)! It’s a great piece of kit which will make my life so much easier.
All of my Ryobi ONE+ machinery works very well and this is obviosly no exception.

Not as powerful as the old corded one on thicker branches but way more convenient and safer to use.

  42. DonnieSolander says:

     United Kingdom

Great piece of kit.I use it to maintain some 110 meters of hawthorn hedging. It is light (compared with petrol driven), does not have the inconvenience of electric cable, powerful and quiet. A 5 amp battery will last about an hour before requiring a recharge, so I have 2. I also purchased the strimmer which although not quite as impressive is quite adequate for a largish garden.

Ryobi have nailed it with this trimmer and the ONE+ system. This is my goto trimmer. I have electric and petrol ones. Bought this one and could not believe how much better it is than my others. So rather than have it for occasional jobs, it has been the main trimmer for cutting back 75 metres of growth on a traditional country hedge. Just need 2 batteries and the job took nearly half the time. Awesome

I like this tool as it is very sharp from new and the end of the blade allows you to chop quite thick bushes and branches. The head swivels which is a nice feature although I prefer to just change the angle i cut at. I use a 5ah battery and i use it for 30 to 40 minuets on thick heavy hedges and it still has power left. I don’t think it is to heavy compared to some that are out there.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersIt’s lighter than even an expensive petrol equivalent and has a rotating handle for awkward corners. It cuts tough hedging almost as effectively as my Husqvarna petrol hedgecutter but it is equally good on moderate hedges such as privet or yew. The lack of petrol smell in face is good news and it is less exhausting and noisy than the standard fuel types. It works with a larger and smaller battery, the latter making it even lighter although that works for less time. Battery life so far has been very good-I’ve cut a hedge for over forty minutes with no noticeable drop in power. It came with free hedge sweeping gadget which is a bonus. Altogether I feel it has been a good buy.

An excellent hedge trimmer that works much better than I anticipated – better than my previous B&D mains electric hedge trimmer. Highly recommended if you are into the Ryobi One+ system.

Only used it once so far, but works well. The hedge sweep is very effective at sweeping away the cuttings from the top of the hedge.
