    Great your high hedges
Just what I needed after my Xreach Ryobi broke. Easy to put together, adjustable head angle is great. When full extended the top end is a little on the heavy side as others have said, but if you use the strap you can offset this somewhat.

    Heavy
They are quite heavy with one bar extension as they don’t seem to be balanced very well (top heavy) so i don’t know what it would be like with the other extension pole. But still very good cutting action.

    Heavy
The hedge cutter is very heavy to use, as mentioned by other purchasers. It also flexes in use, even without the additional extension. I am a woman in her 70s but am still quite physically fit. It did the smallish job for which it was bought but I wouldn’t like to use it on a long run of hedge.

    Good but could be better.
It is a good product but requires improvement. In particular, the closing hold becomes loose on use with the result that the electrical connection from the battery is disrupted and the cutter stops. The on off switch is awkwardly positioned for long use and difficult to hold. The cutter , as a complete product, is too expensive and especially for northern ireland prospective customers , Ryobi does not allow them special offers as for the rest of the UK as it will not post to them.

Good hedge trimmer, could be better balanced
The setup of the device was easy (just slot in pole and tighten large screw) and the strength of the cutting blades is great.

The issue is with the placement of the trigger and the balance. I assume this is the same for most items of this type though. The trigger is at the bottom and the weight is at the top, so it’s like balancing an anvil on a long pole! When you’re leaning it towards the hedge, your arms are taking a lot of weight, even with the shoulder harness.

Still for the price (and good 3rd party batteries) it is a great buy.

    Good but heavy
Using this product was like a work out, i guess this is to be expected with a hedge trimmer at the end of a long pole but be aware before buying. After an hour my arms were trembling so i spread the job over 3 days. Saves on going to the gym

Safety button awkward Location on the machine
I bought this product to use on a couple of High hedges I have on my property. The safety button which you slide to operate the cutter is placed in an awkward position It’s not easy to operate and hold the hedge cutter at the same time. I also found the strap which is supposed to help support the hedge cutter, cannot be shortened This does not help with the weight of the machine. I had to balance the cutter and on my hip to support it which is not ideal. I am thinking about getting a proper harness which goes over the shoulders to support but the reviews I have read for that don’t seem to be good . However, the cutter itself did the job with a little bit of struggling from me. The battery life is very good. I’m sure I will get the hang of it with practice.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersCuts well - if you're strong enough
OK – the plus points first. It’s sharp and powerful so it cuts very well. My 5AH battery lasts longer than me. Which brings me to the downside. I’m a big 5XL lad and I find the ergonomics very poor. The weight is at the far end and you have to control it from the handle end. After a few minutes I’m wishing that it had better grips and that the cutting end wasn’t so heavy. It pulls on muscles that don’t normally get used. After 20 minutes I feel like I’ve had a workout. All in all, it will do the job well and avoids the need for ladders but be ready to take frequent breaks.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGood, not grea
As with the other reviewers, I bought this to cut a large hedge about 2m high, 2m thick, and 30m long. I have the smaller hand-held Ryobi hedge trimmer and thought this would be a nice upgrade, as my hedge is now too large for it.

This does the job of cutting hedges. It’s pretty powerful. I had no cutting issues, and with a 5.0a/h battery, it lasted well over an hour, so there are no issues with battery life or performance.

The main problems are weight and ergonomics. It’s heavy even without the extension pole attached, and with it attached, it becomes almost unmanageable. Cutting vertically is fine. A bit heavy but gets the job done. Cutting horizontally, though, is another story. As it’s so top-heavy, the pivot point is so far up the pole you, if you can manage to lift it up you can hardly pull the trigger and manoeuvrability is very unspecific.

Overall you get what you pay for, and for 122, it’s fine. If I only have to use this once a year, it’s worth it. If you’re on the skinny/weak side (or possibly a female, sorry but my wife couldn’t manage it), you might want to consider otherwise. I used this for wellbover an hour, and I’m sore all over my back, shoulders, etc. It really gives you a workout.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNice tool shame about the weigh
I bought this as a replacement for another branded hedge trimmer also because it was rechargeable so no cables to cut through. I have done that in the past so it was important. The hedge trimmer is very good but it takes a while to be able to handle such a long and in evenly balanced item. It is a little too heavy and you have to have excellent upper body strength in order to control it. It is very heavy but I bought it with the harness which helped keep it more stable. I didn’t even run out of battery life either but it is very difficult to use for the first time. I am just under 5ft and 44 kegs and I could just about use this hedge trimmer. I definitely would recommend it if you have tall hedges like me but it is more difficult to use lower down on the hedge so I switched back to my old one in order to complete the job. Excellent tool.

Does what it should weighs a lo
Wanted a poke head trimmer as I have loads of Ryobi tools obvious choice.
Works great does exactly what you want, only criticism is weight, I’ve got old 67 now but big build this is a bit on the heavy side at full length luckily I only do a small amount at a time so just wouldn’t be able to use this for longer than 30 minutes. It does exactly what it should but will be a be last resort use by me when ladders and my other Ryobi head strimmer can’t be used. You definitely need to use the strap.

Hence removed star due to weight.

Great piece of kit. Cut a 30ft long 8ft high beech hedge with one 4amp battery. Easy to use. It no where near as heavy as my petrol hedge cutter, plus it’s so much quieter!!! Advice to keep blade greased well. Breaks down to fit in the boot of the a car. Well worth buying

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersGreat Tool with Some Weigh
The trimmer was a solid addition to our gardening toolkit. We had it stolen from our garden so we needed a new one. Its performance is good, cutting through thick branches with ease and allowing for precise trimming even at awkward angles. The extendable pole is useful for reaching higher hedges without needing a ladder, and the battery life is more than sufficient for my medium-sized garden.
The only downside is that it’s a bit heavy, especially during extended use. It can become tiring to hold after a while, which is something to consider if you have a lot of trimming to do. However, the weight seems to contribute to its robust build quality, so it’s a trade-off I’m willing to accept.

Strap can be used to support weight when moving around.
Would be better if hand grip could be rotated and if one had 4ft long arms. Difficult to reach trigger when cutting a tall hedge.

    Brilliant ki
What a godsend, after recent health issues I daren’t use the ladders and normal trimmer to trim the top of my hedges. As I’ve got loads of Ryobi One kit (including the extended pole saw) it was a no brainer to get the pole trimmer to complement it. Very easy to put together and very easy to use. Yes, it’s a bit heavy, but not to the extent that it’s unusable, just have to use a bit of common sense. The quality of the cut is excellent and having the sweeper attached means all the trimmings can be bought down without issue! Top product from a top company, highly recommended it!!

    Happy Trimming
Bought this to replace my petrol multi tool. The petrol one was heavy at the rear and got very hot indeed.
So I used the 5.0amp battery with it on my conifers. I thought it would be poor compared to the petrol one.I was shocked how well it cut and not hot parts to catch yourself on.I would say it is top heavy to use but once you get used to it you will be able to control it ok.I have not had to use the extra extension pole as I can reach around 10 ft without it if lifted.Battery lasted well and your arms will be a bit achy until you get to using it.
I now use all the time quieter than the petrol one too.

    It is rather heavy
It cuts the hedges fine, but with the extension it is very heavy to handle. As I am elderly I find the extender very hard to handle so this gets most of its use without the lightweight middle extension. For me this limits this otherwise good product.

Powerful trimmer, easy to assemble, just a little heavy
I was pleasantly surprised by quite how powerful this was given I was comparing it to a petrol-powered trimmer but it makes light work of pretty much everything I’ve thrown at it from some pretty thick laurel and cypress.
The only downside is, it’s quite heavy, particularly when using the extension. I don’t really mind, but some might feel that’s a challenge so I’ve rated it 4 rather than 5 stars.

    Ideal for awkward hedges
All telescopic hedge trimmers are ackward and heavy however not all cut well and this one does cut really well and the big 5.0 battery (it doesn’t come with a battery!!! So don’t forget to buy one separately) lasts really well which allows me to cut our hedge easily several times from one charge, as it is a relatively short hedge, 20mtrs or so but feel confident that the 5.0 battery could last most jobs.

As most reviews have said. It is heavy even with just the one extension. The safety and on/off triggers are awkward to get to. The harness is also very awkward and balance seems to be in the wrong place.
However….it does an amazing job at hedge / bramble / thorn bush clearing.
A 5A/H battery lasts ages. Your arms will ache long before battery dies.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersDoes the job.
I have eight Ryobi tools, including a short hedge trimmer. Each is excellent for what it does. My hedges are eight feet high so, to avoid using unstable ladders, I choose this. The handle mechanism is the same as the short chainsaw (which is great).

I was using it within ten minutes of unpacking, just with the battery and trimmer end, not with with middle extension section. It did a great job, cutting through thick branches of various hedge plants.

With the middle section included, it is obviously long and the business end, the trimmer itself, feels heavy. The strap supplied is not the best but, balanced carefully, it does the job. I usually dress the part for high hedge trimming, i.e. protected to avoid material going into shirts, hair, etc. Given the weight, usually take regular breaks but one benefit of the weight is that once the trimmer is positioned at the appropriate cutting depth, the weight of the cutter does a lot of the work itself but just be prepare once it nears ground level.

Works brilliantly. Having read the reviews as to how tiring it is to use I braced myself for a tough time, but it wasn’t all that hard. Having said that, at age 77, about 30 minute sessions are what I will work with.

    Great for cutting high shrubs
Bought this because it was the best one for reaching the height of the climbers on my house even though I had read the comments about the weight especially when fully extended. The supplied strap is useful when resting but is of no help when actually cutting.

That said, it cuts through the foliage without any problems even some of the thicker branches.

This this trimmer has certainly made cutting the climbers and high bushes a lot easier without the need for steps and ladders.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat performance, but wish it was lighte
Generally I am very pleased with my purchase. The ability to reach to high places has been great and the cutting performance is very good. With the extra extension pole the setup gets quite heavy and you do tire quite quickly. The harness helps, but only for resting, not when you actually cut.

Ps. There was no assembly guide in my package or quick guide – but I managed to figure it out, just be careful how to connect them, don’t force it as each pole fits only one special way like a key. Ds.

Yeah I read the comments, yeah I thought I’d handle it, now this does a great job, cuts like a dream for a battery operated, it’s just so heavy, front loaded so it feels like you’ve got a shark on the end of a rod. Sturdy, well built and does exactly what you need it to when you sort your angles out and learn how to hold the thing. No need for push ups and pull ups just half hour on this and you’ll need to start doing leg day to match

Does a very good job, but quite heavy.
Bought this to save having to use ladders on my trees. Used it at the standard length and also the full length. The cutting itself was excellent and not too heavy at the standard length. It very front/top heavy though when using the full length and I found it very hard to manoeuvre at this length. It’s done what I wanted it to do though, but it would just be easier if I was 20 years younger. I also find it hard and fiddly to put on the blade cover, it would be better if it was a glove type. All in all, I would recommend this but not if you have any issues with your shoulders or back.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersSwitch is in the worst place
I have given this four stars because it does it’s job i.e. it trims hedges and I knew it was heavy before I bought it so I can’t complain about the actual weight of it. It appears to be well built, quite sturdy, pole doesn’t bend and it all seems to fit together well. It also cuts quite thick branches.

    Now the downsides:

It is incredibly unwieldy, the vast majority of the weight being at the business end.

The switch is in the worst possible position being a long way behind you in use because the balance point is a long way up the pole, this means that your switch-hand has to be held at a very strained angle. Not only that, but while pressing on this badly mounted switch you have to also operate a switch lock. The trigger switch is underneath and the switch-lock is on the top and forwards. This is not a problem if you are standing next to the switch/battery compartment but that isn’t how it is used.

Because all the weight is at the top end it is difficult to manoeuvre so don’t try any fiddly topiary when the device is at full extension.

I shall be disabling the switch lock and holding down the power switch with some device or other so I can hold it nearer the balance point. This might be considered unsafe but you are a long way from the sharp end so you’re not in any danger but it will in the end make the device safer as it will be easier to hold.

The weight is a major factor unless you are strong. The hedge cutter would be difficult to use by any lightweight man or woman and I certainly don’t recommend it for a little old lady to trim her privet hedge (ooh er missus).

The harness is pointless unless you are holding the device vertically and your switch hand is in front of you, this would be a rare position; I stopped using it almost immediately.

All in all this device works, it cuts hedges and small tree branches, it’s as quiet as it could be and probably doesn’t fare worse when compared to other cutters with head-mounted motors. Better would be a system wherein the motor was in the handle and a cable drive drove the cutters, they probably exist but nowhere near this price. The battery is an adequate size because by the time it runs out you will really have had enough for this session.

I think this is as good as it gets for the price but be aware you will have to very strong to use it properly

A great hedge trimmer but some niggles
A good Hedge Trimmer at a great price but the poles are not easy to assemble for some reason they seem too big to fit together.
But my main niggle is that the blade guard is such a tight fit getting it off and on is very hard and locating it on the end to get it back on is nigh on impossible, considering these are sharp blades this is by no means ideal!
As with all these with the motor on the blade end it is heavy to use due to balancing issues.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHeavy and awkward at firs
Assembly was easy, but when I first started it up the 2ah battery makes the cutter sound feeble. However in use I was able to cut a large leylandii hedge without recharge. Its heavy and awkward to use at first but as I got used to it the better the handling became, its still heavy but I am 65 and not especially strong and got the job done. I think it would benefit from a stronger battery for speed but for occasional use it’s fine.

Just had this delivered at lunchtime & been using it to cut back & trim a very large bush that was overgrown & not possible to reach across the top with an ordinary cutter. I already use the one+ system so attached a 5.0AH battery. It is a bit on the heavy side, but it’s just about getting the technique & balance right – I just took my time & didn’t find it a problem. The cutter worked perfectly, even managing to go through some quite thick branches & hardly drained the battery at all. Overall – really pleased with it.

This tool is a good cutter and does the job well. However it isn’t very well balanced and is heavy to use. It would be much better and easier to use if the cutting head could be swivelled, like on the the non pole hedge cutter. It’s hard to use for more than fifteen minutes. Having said that it is a good tool, and the sweep blade is a good attachment, which is supplied with the tool. Registering for the extra years warranty, offering a total of three years warranty in total, requires opening an account with Ryobi. I think that is a bit unnecessary, but that’s the way they want it.

Works ok for me but it’s not easy to use as a non telescopic. It doesn’t have just a handle you can put on. It’s always big even when on shortest it’ll go.
    Slightly unwieldy to use.
I’m ok as a 6’2″ man but even with the strap it’s hard work. If I was a 5’2″ woman I’m pretty sure it would be very difficult. Like the distance from main handle means I can have to have my hand at a weird angle to hit the trigger.

All the above said – works as well as my corded hedge trimmer if not better so the tool itself works great. The ergonomics – I’d need some convincing

    Quite heavy!
Reasonable product but it is really heavy and quite awkward to use in certain positions, I’m not sure how much use it will get simply because of the weight.

    Versatile long reach hedge cutte
Well made and cuts well, but it is not very light. 20 minutes of overhead hedge cutting is enough for me to need a rest. With the extension pole fitted cutting requires a good deal of upper body strength and is very taxing. Learn to use it to suit your personal ability and it’s a great tool. Battery life is good.

    Built like a tank
Very good tool and strong cuts clean and easy, the only down side is it is quite heavy at its full extension
Otherwise no problem if you have a large hedge probably best to get a larger battery if working hard battery like reduces quickly I already had a four hour battery and this coped much better for my large hedge.

Works very well and did the job
I used this item to cut the high side of a Lawson Cyprus hedge. It worked very well, but remember the longer the reach the heavier it will feel with a bit of flexing. But very impressed with battery life and cutting ability overall I rate this as a worth while purchase.

    Great better than expected
Does the job well as expected from Ryobi. The hedge trimmer is surprisingly quiet compared to the Ryobi lawnmower we have which is pretty noisy. The battery supplied is only a 2amp but having other batteries makes it no problem. It’s easy to use but very heavy so I’m expecting my hubby to have aching shoulders later (review written by Debbie). The extension poles add plenty of reach so no more worrying that my poor husband might fall off the ladder. The blades cut nice and cleanly so all in all very happy with hedge trimmer.

Light effortless piece of kit, used with easy through mature hedges.

    Great device
Very pleased with this Ryobi tool – effective and easy to use hedgecutter. The only issue is the weight which can be a bit of a burden after a while, but it is ideal for my hedge length. So probably worth sticking to the 2 or 2.5 battery capacity as you may not actually keep going for an hour or more without a break.

    Good machine.
Bought this for my sister to replace one I broke. She says this is a better machine and goes through her hedges easier than the old one. She is 58 and says it gets a wee bit heavy after a while but does the job great.

    Heavy
It’s easy to use and a reasonable weight in normal mode but it’s very heavy when using the extension pole even with the shoulder strap.

    Great for tall hedges but.....
This tool is great for tall hedges and saves messing around with platforms/ladders and mains cables which get in the way and can be cut 🙁 . It is heavy in it’s extended form but does a great job cutting the hedge so if you can live with that I can recommend it. It comes with a shoulder strap which helps supporting the weight.

    Robust but not lightweigh
I haven’t used it yet but it should do what I want it to do. It was heavier than I imagined, even though I didn’t extend it to its full reach.

Great tool I am able to cut my large hedge from a distance with the extension, this means no irritation from pollen etc. With the extension it feels a bit too flexible and very top heavy but personally I’m so happy I bought it… No cables!!!!

    Best for tall hedges.
Uses very little power. Slightly cumbersome. Could be a bit shorter. Not much good for close up trimming due to it’s fixed length. Over all though, still a decent product for the price.

Does the job and well made
Purchased in order to trim several large bushes plus a very large laurel hedge. As previous reviews a reasonable degree of upper body strength is required especially when extended as motor weight is at the top of the pole. Would recommend several short sessions to gain confidence in handling. Inadvisable to consider if physically unfit. Battery adequate as 1 hour use is tiring. Motor/Cutter does its job.
