Super sharp, glides through the thickest wood, buy this you will need it when SHTF.
I now own 2 Silky hand saws. They are excellent for pruning trees and can actually cut a good size branch. We have been using them on pruning apple trees in the spring and it makes the task go faster and easier. Just remember to take care of your hand placement as they will cut through your skin if you do not pay attention to what you are doing.
Excellent! Received product exactly as described in the listing. It’s a Quality Product and reached me in seven days at Nagpur, India. I read all the reviews at Amazon.com and they are all true.
I’ve had this saw a few months, and use it primarily for camping/bushcraft type wood processing, and so far it has worked beautifully for everything I’ve thrown at it. I would add that the only thing that slowed it down somewhat was harvesting fatwood, which tends to gum up the teeth and blade edges.
This hand saw will tear through the toughest wood imaginable. The build and material quality is top notch. Every camper, home owner or outdoor enthusiast should be required to own at least one.
This saw felt flimsy and light ….. And then I cut a log with it. I’ll shut up now and say grab it. Only reason it’s not 5 stars is the case. I with it had a way to hook the saw on without the not great case. The saw cuts amazing though; seriously. Again, it is light, it is flims but if you are hiking, it’s super light and cuts like a laser. Totally worth the money.
This is by far the best hand saw i have ever used, as a avid camper, we use this to saw down all sort of sizes of wood. I would highly recommend this saw to anyone.
Excellent for 2-3″ thick wood. Could work thicker with extra time and effort. Keep an extra blade handy.
Incredible saw. Don’t know how it provides twice the cut vs push-and-pull saws but this thing goes through trees, branches, wood etc like butter. This saw lives up to its reputation.
This saw is super sharp and a fast cutting saw. It feels like a quality tool and I’m sorry I didn’t buy one sooner.
Our tree guys use Silky’s all the time. This is a great size to carry around in the door of the truck while driving down two tracks. Super sharp and cuts quick!
Essentially a lightsaber. Best Japanese style saw I have ever used.
Razor sharp, Quality made. Prunes trees like slicing butter. Cough up the extra $$, you won’t regret! Nice long blade & still fits in back pocket comfortably
Best saw for the price. Period. Speaks for itself. Way worth the money
I go winter camping and have a hot tent so I needed something to cut decent diameter pieces of wood into small logs to go into the stove. This saw is amazing, it will be my go to saw from here on.
I bought this to replace a much cheaper saw I had lost, which I bought to replace another saw I gave away, which replaced a saw I used when I was working as a professional landscaper… (In short, I’ve used lots of these kinds of saws over the years)
This Silky saw not only cuts better than any other similar saw I have used, it feels better in the hand too.
The rubber grip prevents slipping.
The saw has a nice narrow profile, making it easy to throw in a backpack for camping.
Great quality construction, the blade folds up perfectly every time, and locks securely.
Comes with a bonus carrying case with a belt clip.
I love my Silky Saws but the biggest downfall to this particular model is the included plastic case/sheath.
I would prefer to carry the case with the locking lid up…..but, the only way to do that is to use the rubber latching “belt loop” for carrying. I have not been able to keep this rubber piece latched after numerous attempts and ended up resorting to putting a small carabiner through the molded hole in the bottom of the sheath. This is certainly secure enough but does cause a bit of worry about whether or not the lid catch will snag on a branch or whatever and pop open and allowing the saw to drop out of the case. I used a small piece of duct tape to back up the plastic latch.
Other than that, the saw works great, simple design, positive 2 position lock and the medium pitch teeth cut almost as fast as the coarse teeth on my Pocket Boy 170. Blades are easy to replace (just one pivot screw/nut which can be removed/installed with the spine of a knife, but replacement blades are on the expensive side and represent a significant portion of the cost for a brand new saw/case.
Keep in mind that this saw design is a “pull cut” and only cuts on the pull stroke. Don’t apply pressure on the forward/push stroke to avoid blade binding and breakage. Used properly, the blade will not bend and should retain it’s sharpness for a very long time. A friend of mine has used one extensively for over 6 years and is still on the original blade which has never been sharpened.
This saw came on time and has met my expectations after seeing all the positive reviews. Takes bit of time to get use to the pull stroke cut. Product was delivered on time.
Lightweight saw that resists binding, cutting on the pull stroke. Glad I did my research and went with a Silky!
Was amazed at how well it cut. The rubber handle makes a big difference when using the same and I wouldn’t go back to a beer plastic handled saw.
Silky saw. I’ve had a number of different types of folding bush saws and the Silky is by far the best I’ve ever used!
The best hand saw I have ever used. Been using it for a month now and it performs spectacularly. I initially bought this to take with me on backcountry camping trips but I have been using it to cut small trees and small to medium branches. It is smooth and efficient, I prefer it over my electric chain saw.
Someone looking for a folding saw can’t go wrong with this jap saw. I have both nacho Laplander and this saw, the silky cuts faster and feels more solid and quality it the hand. The cutting only on the pull stroke is what makes this saw so nice and efficie
Amazing saw! I had a standard folding saw which I thought worked just fine for me. That is until I saw a comparison review with this saw. The Silky Gomboy just eats the wood! It uses so much less effort and does the job in less than half the time.
I like the silky folding saws for backpacking, I use a Firebox wood burning stove on occasion and need to process the wood down to a size that allows me to build a Swedish fire lay in the Firebox. I try to find a log that is roughly four inches in diameter and the size of the silky Gomboy 240 is perfect for that task. It’s also nice to be able to clear a trail if need be and build a fire tripod when out on private land and this saw works perfectly at both tasks. I find the saw is much safer for an inexperienced person to use compared to a hatchet or axe. Keeping in mind that a cut from this saw is nasty, caution and safe practices are necessary when in the backcountry. This saw is slightly heavier than the Bacho and Corona saws with a much better build quality. The ability to change or replace blades is also a plus for the Silky brand. The only down side is the Silky blade does not lock closed so you will need to make sheath or use the supplied plastic case to keep the saw from opening in your pack. I do like the supplied case and the ability to attach the case to my belt.
This little saw is a real beauty. Never used to own a folding saw. Once I got my hands on the GOMBOY 240 and experienced how quickly it cut through a 3 inch branch, I have purchased another Silky. The BIGBOY 360 which I will keep in my vehicle at all times.
This saw is effortless in green or dry wood however hard. The blade is tapered from tooth to spine to prevent sticking .This saw cuts wood, any wood, like a hot knife through butter. .I have not used a better one.
Best folding saw ever!! Silky saw makes the best saws on the marke
These saws are great at cutting 4 inch logs. Along with a good knife, this item is a must for the hiker/camper who wants an efficient and effective means of processing fire wood. The go on sale every now and then. When you see a bargain, don’t hesitate to hit the buy button.
It’s a fantastic saw. It goes through 5inch diameter logs really fast, it’s takes up very little space in the pack and weights next to nothing. The only issue I have is that as the size of the log increases from about a 5inch diameter it starts to take quite a bit longer to get through the log, and for ~$45 I feel as though it should be able to handle more. However, what it does it does better than any other saw I have used.
Quality tool from Japan. Should provide years of use in the garden and campe
Arrived quick, good quality.
Update: Got to use it today and I was blown away by how well it cut. Going to purchase another in the silky lineup.
To quote one YouTuber ” this saw is radically sharp!” and it is very sharp and effective. Recommended!
The best handsaws. I own the Gomboy and the Bigboy. They are incredible. Use it properly, don’t go nuts and bind the blade, be patient. Once you’ve kinked the blade it’s only a matter of time until it breaks, and the replacement blades on Amazon that I can find are more expensive than buying a whole new saw (as in, over 50 dollars)*(and yes, that means this is my second one! A friend killed my first one by not using it carefully).
These will rust so wipe them down after every use and apply a touch of oil if you’re storing it. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
Absolutely love this saw. Incredibly sharp teeth, light weight, and perfect ergos.
Incredibly sharp, the blade is thin and cuts only on the pull stroke so caution must be taken to avoid bending the blade on the push stroke.
This is one of the best saws I have ever used, it cuts great and Handles so well.
I used this saw to gather fire wood on a 4 day canoe trip. It performed excellent. Definately recomend. Just take care not to jam the end of the blade into anything as the blade is thin and will bend
The delivery is annoying seen as though you do pay for it but it is the best price on the market but not by too much. Amazing product though, the best silky saw i have used so fa
***************Update 05-07-2019*******************
I’ve used this thing on just about everything now and it’s still a Vicious Little Cutter. I give it 7 stars out of five.
********************************************************
Having acquired this saw for my bug out bag, I found it to be a constant little buddy when working in the back yard.
Recently set a dozen fence posts along a property line infused with low hanging/spreading coniferous branches along the entire way. This little “Sawz-all” carved a 3′ fence[work] path magnificently. For hardwoods like dogwood, branch removal left a smooth, properly-angled cut to the tree .. with minimal effort. And that’s the point .. this tool wasn’t designed to give its users a workout but rather a fast, efficient result with minimal effort.
So when I’m outside, this little rascal often stays in my back pocket; just too handy to not have along. If the price is your beef, get over it. This is an awesome little tool built many years of pruning if used thoughtfully.
The only complaint is the kind-of-dumb plastic storage container it comes with. Nobody’s going to strap a goofy hinged thing on a belt; a simple kydex sheath would be way better. But other than that, get this saw. You’ll use it for almost your pruning/cutting needs.

11-18-2019. Update.
Still love this cutter. It’s absolutely a vicious little tool and I carry it every time we head out of state to the in-laws. Having used it extensively in backyard cleanups, it’s still as sharp as the day I got it. A tad expensive but worth every dime.
Second one of these I bought. The other was earlier generation and had minor changes on the handle and locker bar. Silky makes the best quality folding saws on the market, basically professional grade saws that normal consumers can afford. Just get the properly sized teeth and length for the job, or go with something like this medium 240mm that is versatile enough for any chore.
This is ONE GREAT SAW! I can easily saw through a 2-3″ tree limb with little effort with this little gem. The upper edge is not thicker than the blade so it doesn’t get wedged in the wood while cutting like other traditional saws. This would be a smart addition to any camping gear!
Wow!!!!. The cut on this bad boy surpasses anything I have used to date. OK, so the saw is new and the blade is freshly razor and dangerously sharp, but what a smooth cut it produced.
Baring in mind the person who cut this for me is not into d.i.y or heavy odd jobs, cutting or such. So the image is from them. It indeed cuts like a hot blade through butter, believe it!!!
Requires no effort at all as it’s all on the pull stroke reducing the stiff awkward tension with conventional saws. And is easy to use light and with some grip. It’s better than your conventional saws with and without double serated teeth both of which I’ve used and are a lot bigger and nastier to look at.
I would consider the tool for d.i.y jobs bushcraft in ( which will be it’s main goal) because it’s compact and easy to use and sharper as well as leaving a smoother finish. Why did I choose this product????
I did some pretty extensive homework on this saw before buying it because I’d heard mixed reviews on this product. The obvious choice was the baco laplander which is like the saw of all bushcraft kinds they use. Rather than go with the status quo I decided to weed out the top two. I eventually went with the silky gombo 240( but with intentions of the 210 but chose a longer blade) because of the cut and stainless steel construction. In my opinion it seemed to do a job quicker and neater. And it looked bad ass.
The whole thing is sturdy and strong with chrome plated latch for dropping the blade and a thick heavy rubber handle and the ability to loosen the tension of bladed
Used for the first time today, made very short work of an ugly little shrub in the back yard.
Great great great saw. I would recommend going with the coarse teeth.
Cannot beat Silky. I love this saw. I use it in the bush as well as around home. I’ve cut wrist size trees down with it no problem.
Can’t wait to get cutting with my silky. Shipping took forever but should be worth it!
I watched a million and a half different YouTube videos on saws, and this one pretty much seemed to be the favorite. I read another million reviews here on amazon, and this one seems to be top rank. Initially, I wanted something bigger, I admit. I was tired of lugging a bow saw around to cut up larger logs, but at the same time I didn’t have a good smaller saw for lighter tasks. I didn’t think the katana was going to be very good for small tasks, and I wasn’t going to buy and carry multiple saws either. So I figured the larger gomboy would be a good balance, medium teeth for versatility. I looked at the bahco laplander, how can you not? It’s probably the top selling bushcraft saw on the market. But I have used saws with stamped teeth, and they suck. I looked a lot at corona, and as far as I can tell, the only real difference is the handle, and the second blade lock position. The silky is obviously much nicer, but is it enough to pay 2-3x the price? Well, I guess time will tell on that. The price does tend to jump around, so if you can grab this for around $40 I’d say it’s a bargain.
Cuts like a hot knife through butter, starting out, I used a fair bit of effort, just being used to push/pull saws. But after a couple cuts, my arms turning to rubber, I started to let the saw do the work. I quickly realized all that effort was wasted. Just running the saw back and forth on the wood, it just goes through it, it doesn’t make any difference if you try to add pressure. You can however make the blade bind up and possibly bend it however, so there’s another reason to let the saw do it’s thing.
So 5 stars might be generous when you could potentially get a corona for half the money that works as well. But there is certainly some added quality to the silky, and the price is really the only fault I can find.
On a last note, the case. It’s a nice heavy plastic latching case, with a lanyard hole and large drain holes. The latch can also be used as a belt loop. That being said, I don’t use it. It just adds bulk and weight, and I can see no necessity for using it for my purposes.
UPDATE: So my friend bought a corona, and we took our saws on a 4 day camping bushcraft trip. We built a 2 person lean to shelter with walls, an outhouse, and a fire reflector, and processed enough wood for a constant fire, plus stores for the next trip. Needless to say we put them through the paces. I noticed that aside from a MUCH nicer and tougher handle, the silky cut quite a bit faster and easier. For logs 4″+ diameter he just left it to me, didn’t even want to bother with the corona. The only place it did outshine the silky, was small limbs, less than finger size. The silky is a little too bitey when the limbs start to nestle in the tooth gaps.
After all that, it’s a little dirty, but still cuts like new. I’m probably going to want a bucksaw still for larger lumber, but this thing is really packable. I don’t notice it when it’s in my pocket most of the time. Sure it sticks up a ways, but not enough to fall out or interfere with me bending or sitting.
This is an excellent saw. The Silky GOMBOY Folding 240 Medium Teeth is well built, very sharp and the locking mechanism works great for camping, hiking or other outdoor condition. When needing to cut a lot of wood, larger branches or small-medium trees Silky 240 is convenient, better and faster.
Great quality product. And the delivery was faster than it was originally estimated.
It’s a Silky Saw, It’s awesome and cuts super quick. Great for camping, hiking, or even throw it in your ATV/vehicle for those times you need it.
I also have the Pocketboy 170 and it’s really good as well. I would not buy a different brand. If you need a folding saw, SILKY in the way to go.
This saw lives in my backpack. I cut firewood with my Silky Katana, and use this for processing firewood and building shelter on the trail. It is surprisingly sharp and effective. I expected it to be excellent, and yet it still exceeded my expectations. I have used a lot of trail saws over the years. This is the best, by far.
This has to be the best folding saw I have ever used, most saws will bind and are generally hard to saw with but not this one. It is almost effortless to work with and super sharp. The blade is a little thin but its no problem, it is the first saw I have used that is actually fun to use. I would really recommend this Silky saw.
Used it for clearing mountain bike trails — made short work of a snag in an arroyo, saved hours of work. Stays sharp, cuts fast and easy. Everayone wanted to try it. Sturdya, fits the hand comfortably, came with stout storage case that can be worn on belt. Fits inside the backpack I use when mountain biking. For price, weight, size and performance a really good buy.
i am impressed with the built quality
took a month to arrive because its coming directly from Japan but don’t mind to wait.
This folding saw is pretty awesome. Folds up quickly, very lightweight, doesn’t take up a lot of space and goes through wrist size branches in seconds. I have used it for cutting ridge poles, tripod poles, firewood, and for cutting a couple of 2x4s during a home project. Great saw.
Read a lot of reviews of various saws before I bought this and I am glad I picked this one. I have a Wyoming saw and have used it in Colorado and Alaska and loved how it cut, but I didn’t like the weight or the multiple pieces. I kept seeing Youtube bushcraft people use a saw like this and I never thought it would hold up. Well guess what, this thing rocks! Love the medium teeth for the best compromise. I had my brother use this and my Wyoming saw with large teeth side by side and he hated the Wyoming saw. This is like using a lockback folding knife and the rubber type handle is very comfortable. I even cut from underneath with the additional notch in the saw and it works. It made the day for processing wood without a hatchet that makes too much noise when I am processing wood for my Ti wood stove in my 6 man tipi. It was literally the big surprise of the trip and I know my brother will be buying one as well. Buy it and you won’t regret it.
This saw met all my expectations. It is very well made.
One of the most important things that I have bought for being outside.
I purchased this to use as a Sierra saw in backpack, bushcraft, and woodcraft outings. Not for the gram-counters, this all metal frame and solid construction holds up to one torture after a another, and chews through any wood that I’ve thrown its way. Does wonders on soft woods- like chewing through Jello- no effort. Moderate density woods, likewise, just with a few more strokes. And dense hardwoods (cured hickory, oak, ironwood, etc) more efficient than any general purpose saws I’ve used in this size.
The steel is rigid and the tapered kerf is spot on for preventing binding in most situations (I still make a few small wedges if I know I’ll be working with it a lot; never want to get caught unprepared). The fact that it is serviceable in the field and the blades are user replaceable make it a big bonus for me! Need a more aggressive tooth pattern for soft Aspen or Poplar? Done. Need something for something super hard and unforgiving? Done. Five minutes spent with an improvised screwdriver or multitool and the blades are changed.
I have used various versions of Silky saws professionaly over many years, they are probably the best (I have not tried all the others) and are very efficient at what they do.
There is a downside, they can snap as the blades are thin and it is easy to forget they are not a Bahco or similar, and they like any saw do not stay sharp forever, sharpening can be done with the correct file but is a very precise and long job so most arborists simply buy a new blade and they don’t come cheap, so for the everyday garden work whilst they are nice to use, you do have weigh up the cost against the use they get and decide if a cheaper option, of which some are good is a better bet, 28 pounds for a 270 Gomboy blade is a lot of money for a garden saw.
Having said all that those that use them on a daily basis are happy to pay as when sharp they are the best.
I find this an excellent saw and quite able to do large work with a clean edge while still being quite compact in size, something that is important for the live aboard sailor’s tool box.
Get the course, medium & fine blades to increase the saw’s effective work range. Remember it is a pull saw not a push saw!!!
This is my first Silky saw, but it is not my first Japanese pull saw. Please note I said “Pull Saw” because Japanese made saws cut while “pulling” the saw, Not “pushing” like the typical American made saw. If you try to cut wood by pushing the saw, using the Silky saw, you will probably break the blade.
My first experiences with Japanese pull saws were from using Vaughan Bear Hand Saws Vaughan 569-10 BS333C Bear Hand Saw with Coarse/Medium Blade, 13-Inch . I have at least 4 different Vaughan saws, but my favorite is the Vaughan Bear Hand Saw. However, unless you save the original packaging, there’s no good way to transport the saw safely. And, in my experience, they are incredibly sharp. The Silky saw is no different in this respect, it is also extremely sharp. But, since the saw blade tucks safely into the handle, when folded, I can stick it in my pocket, or my back pack, and not worry about it cutting something I don’t want cut.
The first thing I cut with the Silky saw was a 5″ diameter, 6 foot long, dead Mesquite tree limb. I was impressed with how quickly I was able to saw thru the limb. Especially, since it was a dead standing limb. The wood was so hard, it didn’t break off and fall, until there was only a piece about 1 inch long and 1/2 inch thick, left holding the limb to the tree..
I have a Bahco Laplander Folding Saw in my backpack now. Bahco 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw, 9-Inch Blade, 7 TPI It is a great little folding saw. And, it has served me well. But, for cutting wood, the Silky saw outperforms it, without question. Although the Bahco Laplander Saw cuts pushing and pulling, The Silky saw cuts faster and cleaner, through wood. However, I will keep my Laplander saw for cutting bone. I haven’t tried the Silky on bone, and probably won’t.
I really prefer pull saws for cutting wood, especially since most of the limbs, I feel the need to cut, are usually above head high. I find it much easier to cut limbs, that are over my head, by pulling on the saw.
This is my first Silky saw, but it sure won’t be my last. Once you learn to cut with a Japanese pull saw, pushing a saw just seems backwards.
This is a brilliant saw and has exceeded most of my expectations. It varies ever so slightly from the picture, must be a newer model. Simply has a rubber texture added to the lock – perfect as a thumb rest.
There were just two minor details that could have been better though. Where the lanyard hole is, at the bottom of the handle, the plastic is quite jagged around the inside of the hole, which isn’t a problem for me but it doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence and might wear away at any lanyard you decide to put through it.
The second thing, is that the saw blade doesn’t close into the handle as easily as you would think. It tends to get caught on the rubber handle. And you end up trying to close it really slowing to try and line it all up. It would have been nice if there was something to guide the blade into handle. Just a Slightly wider opening at the end of the handle and metal either side of the opening would have allowed for that minor flex in the blade.
Other than that, the saw feels amazing in the hand and the locking mechanism is really sturdy.
It’s an impressive buy !
And very useful for camping
This thing is badass, wish I could add more stars. During trail maintenance we ran out of chainsaw fuel and I cut a 16″ log with this. I’m not saying that would always be possible, the log position was optimal, but it happened and wasn’t all that much work. This is a little cutting beast.
This is my second one. Very sharp, a quality product. The surprise was the free Japanese Kit Kats that came with it.
Fantastic saw for so little money, I am very impressed with how easy it cuts with less effort that other saws I have. It blasted through wet and dry wood with ease but you do have to remember that it cuts on the pull stroke. Like everything practice makes perfect
Despite quoting several weeks for delivery it arrived in about a week, very happy and great addition to an ever expanding tool ki
Product appears to be excellent quality, will know more when used in the field. Came a month earlier than expected. Fantastic.
I just recived my silky saw yesterday and it is AWESOME!!! I love how it feels and it is made very well. I am going to order one or two more just to have around. I also showed my friends what it looks like and they want one for them selves. This is a great saw to have and it is the best one I have tried so far!
The Gomboy is the best pruning saw I’ve ever used. “Silky” is the perfect word for the cutting action. The blade locks in two positions, one slightly oblique, to handle cuts in sticky locations. The kerf is comfortably wider than the blade allowing easy action even on thick branches. It’s very functional and more than adequately solid for the job, but I wouldn’t call it rugged. The blade is precision crafted but thin enough to be bent by hand. The handle is solid but I doubt it would survive a tall fall to a concrete driveway. Taken care of, I’m quite certain it will but better and longer than anything else.
The hard plastic packaging it comes in is also a tool holder and it provides excellent protection for storage. It has what appears to be some sort of belt attachment jig on it but I can’t figure out how to use it. Even if I could, the case is too bulky to wear off the ground. I would recommend a soft belt sheath if you want to carry Gomboy with you up into the trees.
Prefect bush craft saw. Will be one of the first things I load for my excursions.
Ok so if you’re considering buying a folding hand saw, this is the one you need to get. I’ve tried many different kinds and when it comes to build quality and cut performance, I’ve yet to find somthing better than this.
It comes in a hard plastic sheath which fits nicely in a backpack or hiking pants. It isn’t overly heavy or combersome. I tend to look for uses for it because I’m always blown away by its cutting abilities.
I chose this legth as I didn’t want to get stuck cutting larger diameter branches with a shorter blade. I was wondering if the integrity of the blade would be decreased but so far it performs flawlessly.
This Silky saw is a bit larger than many but cuts with less effort. Same quality as the one I bought 40 years ago.
Update 11/28/2016
For some reason this saw has more than doubled in price and is no longer a great value. Mine was $27.99 and shipped from Japan for free. For value, you might want to go with the Bahco unless the price on Silky gets back to normal.
Love this saw. Best thing about this saw is that it does the work for you with minimal effort. It is a very fast cutting saw and feels very high quality and sturdy.
Package arrived a month faster than expected delivery time. Definitely will buy again. Super happy with this purchase.
Great saw. Fits nicely into a smaller pack. Large enough to handle most thing you may need to cut. Highly recommend this saw. Well made.. Should be good for many years of use.
I did a ton of research and first bought a bahco which is really nice. This is simply put – better than the bahco. The Bahco laplander is a great saw but I can tell you that the silky’s are better. I have both, the thinner blade of the silky takes less effort and cuts faster.
I have been amazed by the silky.
This saw is pretty awesome. I carry it in my backpack for camping trips. It’s lightweight yet rips through small limbs without much effort. It works way better than an axe. It takes a few minutes to get used to pulling for the cut instead of pushing, it’s Japanese. If you try to push while cutting, you risk bending or breaking it; you have to cut by pulling, which is actually more efficient anyway. I rip 3″-6″ logs like nothing I’ve ever used. Anytime you are cutting logs by hand, it’s going to be work, but this saw seems to make it realativly easy to have a nice fire on backpacking trips. I also own the bigger version, Silky Folding Landscaping Hand Saw BIGBOY 2000 Extra Large Teeth 356-36 , for car camping and it rips through large logs with ease. I’ve also carried it backpacking because it’s pretty light for how well it works, but I ordered the GOMBOY 240 to save weight. I would highly recommend the GOMBOY to anyone wanting a saw for backpacking.
Darned impressive saw. Cuts easily and rapidly if you remember it is a PULL cut, not PUSH cut. Finished cut surface is smooth enough that I am going to try some finish carpentry inside our home with it; will post details when I finish. Relatively lightweight, easy to use, locking mechanism is secure. Stays in my EDC pack, with me every day. Teeth on the blades are VERY sharp, use caution! Well worth the money. Super fast ship from Amazon seller (US based, F-Trade-Japan).
Best saw ever for your garden.. I still have my original Gomboy 240 mm saw I purchased while living in Japan in late 1999. I’m on my 2nd blade with the original saw handle, and I use this amazing compact garden saw for everything plant-wise. It even cut Hardi-board in a pinch but that move ended the first blade’s life, so stick with tree branches and the like. Or order an extra Gomboy blade if you just HAVE to cut building supplies
AMAZING!!! I cant say enough about how this piece works. Its a great purchase and Im glad I got it. For my uses, its the right size and tooth configuration. I recommend it. Too much bigger and the blade would want to bend. Too much smaller and you have to work too hard to cut quickly. This is perfect for my pack.
This is the best folding saw I’ve ever used! It is sharp as all hell and rips through logs of small 1-4 inch diameter with almost no effort, it is capable of cutting through bigger stuff, but you have to be carefull as it becomes much easier to bind the blade on thicker 5 inch and up logs.
As a million reviewers have already mentioned it only cuts on the pull, so your push stroke needs to be pretty gentle since that is where you are putting the most strain on the blade and you could bend it, this really shouldn’t be a problem for you if you unless you are a total bonehead. Basically if the blade is starting to get stuck you are either cutting something too thick, or you need to put some downward pressure on the the piece you are trying to cut off cause the wood is pinching the blade.
The grip is super comfortable, and the locking mechanism seems very strong and is easy to use. The blade has double rows of teeth that are scary sharp and very nicely machined, it looks like it ought to last a good while before I have to replace it, honestly I don’t think your average person would be able to sharpen it without special tools, but maybe I’ll see what Google has to say on the subject. Overall I’m pretty impressed with the design and quality of this tool, I’ve carried it on my last few backpacking trips and it’s already become an essential part of my kit.
If you order this from a Japanese seller like I did just keep in mind that it will take about 3 weeks for you to get it.
I’ll update this review in 6 months or so to give some idea of how well my silky holds up.
I’ve been looking for years for a hand saw that I could depend on. The blade of the Silky Gomboy is super strong and easy to control, and the balance of the handle to the blade is just right. It’s very easy to use, and far superior to all the other brands I’ve tried. Really glad to finally have a hand saw that will hold up for years.
I bought this saw based on a research . Tried it a few times on dry and wet wood . I use saw once or twice a week for small jobs and never work with a saw that is so efficient . I can tell that i never had such a good saw .
Holy cow! This thing cuts like crazy. I whacked down half a dozen unruly bushes that were about 3″ in diameter in no time flat. When I first saw it, I thought, “Is this big enough?” Answer: Yes, it is. This is clearly a high quality saw, far better than anything I’ve used before. It folds up very neatly, too.
Cannot yet speak for the longevity of the saw but it does appear to be built well. It cuts very well any log up to 5″ dia, any bigger than this is probably getting outside it’s intended use. Good solid grip and folds down nicely.
The saw is sharp and works well. Built well. Was delivered promptly.
Holy cow. Right out of the box, I cut through the pictured quarter of absolutely rock hard hardwood, didn’t time it but it was definitely under three minutes. That is a Mora companion knife sitting on the cut piece of wood, with pictures of the unfolded and folded saw to compare, the folded saw is about 1.5 inches longer than the Mora in its sheath. Since I was cutting on the ground, the second, folded backwards position was perfect for finishing the cut. I ordered the medium teeth, certainly had no problem with dried hardwood, other reviews say it’s good for Green wood as well. I don’t know what else you could want for a camping saw, ultralight backpackers would probably want to look at the pocket boy, as this is a fairly large saw, but the amount of work this thing will save would probably outweigh (yikes) the extra ounces in the pack. I’m handy, have cut plenty of wood with Corona folding saws and similar, started without any gloves, but when I saw this ripping through the wood, went and grabbed a pair. Very little binding or bending, I know this is a pull saw so I lightened up a little bit on the pushes, even took a couple different angles to saw the wood quicker, no problem indexing, if there is such a thing as an ultimate handsaw, I think this is it. For the price? Give me a break. If somebody wants to send me a Laplander to try, I will, but for $10 more I know there’s no comparison with this.
Cuts through any type of wood I’ve tried with like a warm knife through butter. Absolutely razor sharp, so be careful with your fingers.
Simple perfection ! This pocket style saw blows the doors off of Bahco and Fiskars. It is a bit pricey, but you are getting a high quality product that is VERY well made. The blade configuration is aggressive and razor sharp. The locking system is positive and strong. The metal is top quality and even the handle seems to be made of a very durable plastic/composite. I purchased this saw after viewing extensive YOU TUBE videos and this saw always came out on top. I use it in my trail bag and also have one for my EDC truck carry. It’s compact size and weight make it a joy to carry and it does a full size job of cutting through limbs up to 4″ in diameter. I mostly use it for gathering fatwood and for camp chores. It would make a fine homeowner pruning saw and would last a lifetime with proper care. When ordering, I would suggest purchasing an additional blade. 2 is 1, 1 is none………..:)
Last year I struggled for a 30 minutes, trying to cut the bottom off my Christmas tree with a conventional crosscut saw. The blade kept sticking and bending. This year I used my new Silky saw, and cut the bottom off a wet tree in seconds! I’ve had more difficulty cutting french bread with a serrated knife. This saw is fantastic! I cannot say enough good things about it. The teeth chew through even wet, green wood, and the blade locks very securely when open. Buy one! You won’t regret it.
This is a very good saw, quality made in Japan, much much better than all the Chinese rubbish flooding the market.
I got this saw last night and was curious why it was rated so high. So, I went out in the backyard in my pajamas and tried it out on some limbs. Wow! I was ripping through 4-6 inch limbs at a rate of about 1 inch per second. I never broke a sweat or lost my breath. You don’t have to put very much pressure on the saw. It just easily rips through wood. The only thing faster would be a freaking light saber.
Absolutely brilliant piece of kit. I used this to chop down a well established birch tree and it was like using a hot knife through butter. It’s great when you find a tool that really does what it is meant to.
Great saw – really eats wood! Very easy to use and get at awkward branches. Handle is nice and thin for your pocket but grips well.
I can’t think of a better saw for a bugout bag. It really goes through the wood with ease. It’s light, extremely well built, and reasonably priced given today’s economy. The blade is long enough to cut through larger limbs, and if you combine this with a knife capable of some serious batonning, such as a BK2, BK7, or BK9, you can be in the wood processing business quickly whether you are camping, working on the farm, or hiking forest trails for the day. I love quality, and that’s what you get with this saw.
I used this saw to cut down a maple tree growing along the fence line in my backyard. The tree was easily five inches or more in diameter and the saw performed wonderfully. After I had felled the tree the saw performed as well or better cutting the trunk into manageable pieces.
The medium teeth cut green wood as smoothly as a back saw cuts kiln dried hardwood and yet the saw cuts very quickly. I find this saw safer to use and easier to control than a bow saw or buck saw because like most Japanese saws it cuts on the pull stroke so there is no need to exert a lot of pressure on the push stroke which is when a saw is most likely to jump out of the kerf and injure the user. The handle is comfortable and the saw is well balanced.
I bought this saw for backpacking and it folds like a jackknife into a compact configuration but the very tip of the blade remains exposed. I don’t expect the plastic box the saw comes in to last very long so I imagine I will eventually solve this problem by making a sheath for it from nylon.
as long as I’m not cutting actual trees that are in excess of 8″ in diameter I thinnk I prefer this saw to a bow saw.
These saws are probably the best on the planet both for pruning and for general purpose use. They are not only incredibly sharp, but also a fine finish to the cut surface, The supplier is excellent, but you will have to be slightly patient as the saws come from Japan at a bargain price, When the saw arrived, well wrapped, it was accompanied by a beautiful little piece of origami – delightful!! I would recommend this supplier to anyone.
My son recommended this item to me when I mentioned the difficulty I was having pruning dead branches off some of our hemlocks. I absolutely love it and use it for all kinds of landscaping chores. I have small hands, yet the handle fits comfortably and the saw is very nicely balanced. The blade can be used in 2 positions, making it easier to reach your target branch or root. The blade folds snugly into the handle, and there’s even a molded plastic case for storage. And best of all, it stays sharp for a very long time.
I’m not a professional, I prune at a moderate pace, whenever it’s necessary, but I can tell this saw will suit me well, worth the price.
One thing to remember, KEEP IT CLEAN. It will be good to you if you are good to it. I use a brass bristle brush with a little bit of orange oil to clean off the blade, sharpen it with a triangle thin file (takes a little practice) and it is flawless, cuts through up to 4” with no problem (thus far), I haven’t had to cut anything thicker with it, though I bet it could.
