Makes a 30 minute boring swim enjoyable and sometimes longer.
Good sound quality whilst swimming, just make sure you have the right setting to cancel out background noise.

This is my third one of these and I just love them. Have always had the light green one but as they were out of stock purchased this black set. Music while swimming enables me to completely de stress. I don’t think I would be able to swim for as long as I do without it.

These are used in the swimming pool to while away the time. They are very good, but the button functions can be difficult to remember. Don’t lose the instructions! The last pair only lasted a couple of years. They have become too expensive.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI took a lot of time trying to find a good pair of waterproof headphones and these are the best quality ones I’ve found.

    Pros
    – Easy to set up and use
    – Multiple sizes of ear tip
    – No wires to mess around with
    – The sound doesn’t change when you put your ears underwater
    – No water gets in your ears when wearing these

    Cons
    – MP3 only (no Bluetooth on any waterproof headphones) which means I’m listening to a very limited selection of bangers from circa 2009
    – Volume doesn’t go up very high, but it’s not the end of the world

Overall, very happy with them. Just got to track down some more MP3s that aren’t my husband’s collection of death metal.

Quality of music good and cuts out the sounds of others in the pool.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI use these for swimming and they have been a game changer. It drowns out the shrieking of family swim in the next lane and breaks the monotony of swimming lengths making me motivated to keep going for longer to my favourite tunes. Just wish it could go a bit louder. Despite turning off the limiter, still want to turn it up a notch or two.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersPleased with product. Took a while to sort the software to upload music though. Have to download a sony app, but you can then transfer music from PC or iTunes to it.
It has taken a few swims to get used to having the earpieces in, but I find it helps to secure it under my swimming hat. It doesn’t stay in place when race swimming.

I bought these as I wanted headphones I could use for running + have music without a smart watch/carrying my phone. Originally I was worried they would be too big for running…and they are pretty big. I guess I have small ears so the hook doesn’t really rest on my ears – the weight is mostly carried in the bud connections. BUT I went on a 10 mile run and they weren’t any more uncomfortable than normal wired headphones. Very happy! Haven’t actually taken them swimming yet. I did try them on with my swimming cap which is a little strange…normally I tuck my ears in the cap but with the headphones on I can’t. Sure there will be a solution though.

you dont have to bring your phone or anything bulky.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBoth me and wife have been using these for over 5 years now, on a daily basis (1-2y per day) and there’s nothing which comes close to these – considering all aspects.
Comfortable – you don’t feel having anything
Stay secure – never fell out, even in strongest wind
Very good sound quality – both for audiobooks and music
Safe – you can turn on function to hear from outside so great in traffic

Do the swimming earbuds get sold separately? I just bought the 4GB variant (no bluetooth) and I only have 3 spare pairs of earbuds. And none seem to have the water protecting membrane. How does one get those?

  25. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

At first I thought these were poor certainly the earbuds supplied were useless, then I read that someone said you didn’t need those with the membrane, so I did some research and decided on the conical ribbed earbud and they were a lot better just make sure you get them well in but be careful they may come off in your ear (its only happened once) so I would glue them lightly to the earphone if you want. Sony should do something about it.

Very easy to load with files and 4gb enough for me. Battery performance very good. I trued a cheaper brand but struggled with loading files. The extra price paid for these was well worth it. Build quality is excellent but you would expect this from Sony

This is a great product. I needed a waterproof player for Spartan racing and this is great. I have absolutely tortured this product and it is still going strong! There are separate buds for water submersion which are great but you do loose a bit of sound when using these. The battery lasts for ages. Mine has gone for 10 hours and still had charge. The buds keep the mp3 in place very well even when doing overhead and underwater obstacles. Overall I would recommend this product for its build quality and the fact it is still going strong after the 12 months of hard use I have exposed it to! I’ve never washed the mud off it and it’s even been stood on a couple of times. Great product!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWhen my aquabeats by Speedo died I thought it was going to cost me a fortune to get another waterproof mp3 player till I found this one. My main question was will I be able to hear my music underwater as I’ve read many reviews of other cheaper products and people all have that issue. the answer is yes, yes you can.

I only use mine for swimming so cant comment on how well it does when running or anything else but:
    Pros
    * Its waterproof!!
    * I can hear my music, and at a decent quality
    * There are multiple play formats – album, folder, random
    * It’s easy to transfer music on to it
    * Battery life seems quite good
    * Different sizes of ear buds means you can change the sizes to fit your own ears

    Cons
    * Swimming fast the headphone can come out of your ears so you need to stop to pick them up and put it back on
    * Little fiddly working out which buttons so what function especially when you are working upside down when they’re on your head
    * You will still get water in your ears from time to time which makes the music muffled
    * Weird charger is needed so if you lose it you need to buy a replacement. Keep in a safe place

Very happy with my new Sony Mp3 player. It’s perfect for when i go to the gym as my old Mp3 player was always falling out of my pocket and really distracted me from what i was doing. Like others have said, it is abit confusing the first time you use it and also when you put your music on as well, but you do learn which buttons do what. The sound is top notch as you expect with Sony and the different size ear buds that come with it are useful as well.

The only thing that would have been better would have been a longer charging USB cable as it is on the very short side, but it’s not the end of the world.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersIf you like listening to your favorite music during your training sessions or simply during walking somewhere and you don’t want to be carrying a heavy MP3 player with you, you should strongly consider this headset. I lost it once and I bought it again, then it was stolen and I bought it for the third time. Really good sound and the feature of excluding almost completely the background sounds is just great. 4gb is more than enough for hundreds of your favorite songs so you never get bored. The interaction with the PC is very easy and it won’t give problems to people who are not into digital devices.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFabulous product. I had two concerns, they wouldn’t stay in my ears and two they wouldn’t be loud enough. I’ve been for a swim with the hot tub bubbling away tight next time me and the sound is excellent. I disabled the AVLS setting, in the order set out, press the pause button, then the sound up, then the forward track button. Do it in that order or it doesn’t work. If you hear the beeps when you turn the music up it’s worked. Fab headphones, deffo recommended.

You can swim underwater and listen to music, that is excellent. When I first tried it I got the earbud stuck in my ear but it came out with tweezers. (Just make sure you don’t push it in too far, you can loop the back tighter by tucking it into your goggles or by using the little tie thing that comes with it.)
Also use it in the gym for cordless listening and though when running or moving about it can rustle and make listening quality lower it still definitely does the job. Been using for 2 or 3 weeks and perfectly functional and enjoyable product.

Edit: Months later it’s still doing its job admirably. I don’t use the swimming function so often as I’ve found that in order to hear it you have to turn it up quite loud. Also, it’s possible to accidentally blare music too loudly and hurt you ears so be careful! (The instructions that come with help you to avoid this if you follow them.)

All in all I would definitely recommend buying this for a portable mp3 player even if you’re not going to use the waterproof function.

12 days in and so far so good, sound quality is not the best but it is still not bad I listen to audio books and lift up music pre workout and it does the job fine . there is a feature which allows you to hear the sounds in your environment, it helps when I’m cycling as I could hear the cars behind me, although it is not very accurate as there are some sounds which I cannot hear but it allows me to listen to all kinds of epic stuff while cycling almost safely.

I will write a more thorough review later on when I have used it for longer. too early for me to judge as I still don’t know how to easily switch between albums, from my music album to audio books album etc .

It took me a while to get this set up to work, including a lot of fiddling with the different sizes of earbuds to figure out what would fit. It’s not entirely comfortable; I don’t forget it’s there, but it’s not uncomfortable either, just a bit awkward.

All that said, I LOVE THESE. Listening to music while swimming is amazing! The controls are easy to use for all that they’re so small, and they stay put on my head much better than I expected, no slippage. The earbuds double as earplugs so I don’t get water in my ears. It holds lots of music, I don’t have to deal with wires, it’s easy to transfer music and charge it, it works like a dream. I’m never going back. Best birthday present I’ve gotten in years. =)

Purchased as a gift for my wife, who is a avid fitness fan and regular “lap pool” swimmer, who wanted something like this to stave off “lap pool boredom”. She really likes the product, although is still experimenting with the various ear bud combinations to find the perfect fit from the numerous choices (having that much choice I suppose is a good thing). Volume is fine, capacity is fine (if limited – but more than sufficient for a 1 hour pool session). It isn’t particularly intuitive for an iPod generation as it involves (shock, horror) file copy rather than iTunes sync – but simple enough if you know where your iTunes library actually resides. Would be improved by iTunes support (playlists etc.) but I’m also sure the price would have to increase to cover the licensing cost. Battery life is fine, with about three swims between recharges. She is starting to understand all the buttons and their functions – which again isn’t intuitive because once the device is “installed” and swim cap & goggles are in place it isn’t a simple task to remove the headset and “read” the function for each button (and there are plenty…). All in all, very happy with the purchase. There are a number of less expensive options, but I’m happy with my choice so far.

After having tried a myriad of wireless headphones, I decided to go for a more established technology: the basic mp3. Though the Sony are more than that, they are waterproof (understatement you can swim with them). The only thing is that you will have to add the music, I know this is a bit of an outdated practice in the age of spotify but hey they work well for cycling, running and swimming (speaking from experience here) what else can you ask for except for a wings to fly with them.

I’m in the gym 6 days a week, for 1:30-2:00hr sessions so I needed something discreet and durable.

This model has a higher sound quality, are very comfortable, feel very strong, easy to control (make sure you flip through the instruction manual), and look and feel professional.

The price tag of 80.00 at the time of purchase Sept 2016 is slightly high. If you have the income and want to make your training sessions even more enjoyable then I recommend these.

excellent headphones. I tried having using the waterproof headphones with waterproof earbuds but these were useless – they never stayed in my ears properly and the wires kept getting tangled. The massive difference with these is that they are wireless, stay in your ear and although I agree with others that the volume could be better I think given the nature of swimming and the sound of water it is very difficult to get the perfect headphones. These also fit snugly under my swimming cap – I have a small head but haven’t found this to be a problem. I would definitely recommend these – they don’t get 5 stars due to the volume issue.

  69. RussellTracey says:

EDIT: I have been using this for 2 months now 3-4 hours a week while swimming. I have no issues, other than the battery is certainly not 10 hours but it is enough. It would be nice if there was a low battery alert when theres about 10-15% left.

Bought this product only for the purpose of swimming. I was quite worried about the sound and other problems that I have read in other reviews, however I have not experienced any of them. It is important to choose correct swimming earbuds, otherwise the sound quality will suffer (not to mention that it is slightly lower with the swimming earbuds). Overall, the sound quality while swimming is good, the max volume on some songs is too high for me.

Golden Review Award: 117 From Our UsersI feel compelled to attempt to address what I’ve seen to be the biggest concerns/ misgivings about this product: the volume and what can be done about it.

I’ve been after a waterproof MP3 player for some time, specifically for swimming, and after researching the competitors, I felt that this one provided the best all-round features. However, the mixed reviews on whether the volume is good enough seems to have been debated for some time so the purchase was a cautious one. There was also a lot of uncertainty/ lack of clarity on a number of different features and points, which again, I’ll attempt to address below.

Having run (and swum) it through its paces, I can confirm, in my opinion, that the volume CAN be really good, with the following understandings and potential, easy, tweaks:

    – Out of the box, the AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) is disabled. If you’re not sure if AVLS is on or not, turn the volume up as high as it can go. If you hear a series of beeps, it’s off.
I did not know this at the time, and so managed to turn AVLS on (more detail below) without realising. This resulted in a very underwhelming walk where the sound of my footsteps far exceeded playback at ‘top’ volume – at this stage, I figured the volume was as poor as some people have said and I was contemplating a return.

    – Turning AVLS on and off – the instructions advise that AVLS can be turned on and off by holding down the forward button and volume up button at the same time for around five seconds (whilst playback is paused). The battery indicator will then apparently flash a couple of times to confirm success. For the life of me, I could not get this to properly work. After attempting for a while, I apparently succeeded but then couldn’t turn it off again.
If this happens to you, reset the device to factory settings by holding the power button down for 17 seconds or so. You won’t lose your music, and AVLS will be off once more.

    – With AVLS off, the volume at max is fair. However, to really get the most out of it, I would implore you to download any free program online that lets you increase the ‘normal’ dB of your track/ audio book/ podcast. It’s incredibly easy to do and I did not notice any decline in quality after doing so.

With AVLS off, and your track’s dB slightly upped, the volume is absolutely fine – on the verge of being almost too loud on max, actually. Put it this way – when swimming lengths in a public pool (whilst a class did aqua-aerobics to the music of ABBA), I was able to listen to an audio book without the slightest hindrance.

I won’t go into much detail at all about other features as I feel they’ve been adequately covered already – in short, battery life seems fair, the product is light, fits very well and doesn’t let any water in (providing you choose your buds carefully). All in all, a really good price for a really good waterproof MP3. Please do not be put off by negative comments on volume. If you’re clued up and prepared to put in the slightest amount of work to get the most out of the system, you’ll be happy.

Battery doesn’t last as long as the old ones and no warning before they die although the adapter is small enough to carry around with them and I can charge them off my phone so not a deal breaker at all.

Amazing Quality! My sister purchased the previous model and gave such a good review I decided I wanted some myself for swimming. The headphones stay in my ears at all times and with the new membrane ear buds the sound quality is perfect! The buttons are nice and easy to use in the pool and no need to keep removing the headphones. The fit is comfortable even with goggles on. The battery life is a massive bonus, swimming several hours a week I haven’t even had to think about charging the battery yet and the device holds more than enough music. Really happy with this product and would recommend to anyone looking for a waterproof MP3!

excellent sound both above and beneath the surface. This version seems to play better underwater and is more clearer then the past version. 1 thing I will say is there is a lack of hard carrier case for the unit which for the money should be standard. Unless your really fussy about your base levels and treble etc. this is a great dual purpose sound player and will far exceed the typical sweet proof only version’s. and wire free is the obvious choice of todays conisure.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHooray it works.

I had some issues with previous purchases but having sought advice from Sony technical department, brilliant btw, I am now hopefully able to carry on adding as much music as I like to it.
I didn’t realise that every time I deleted a file I had to delete it from my trash before I tried to add a new track otherwise the mp3 player simply added it to “other” file thus reducing the amount of storage space in the main “music” file.
Amazon support are polite and friendly but in my opinion don’t have the necessary specialist knowledge needed. Its a very niche field so you need to talk to the experts.
However it seems finally mission accomplished so I will say thanks to Amazon and the supplier and lastly and definitely not least to the Sony Horsham branch and specifically to Robb Hudson for his help

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a great product and does exactly what it says on the lid.
Sony software very easy to use. Controls quite straight forward although a good idea to download the PDF ‘Help’ file from the Sony website although called ‘Help’ it’s a really useful & easily searchable manual eg for volume settings
Loudness can be increased to a reasonable level so it can be heard ok while swimming in the pool.
If swimming seems a good idea to turn OFF ‘ Ambient Sound ‘ otherwise you hear a lots of water splashing about sounds as well as music ( see Help PDF for how to do this )

Golden Review Award: 52 From Our UsersIt takes a lot to make me feel so pleased with a product that I would take the effort to write a review. This device has done it though. I’m a runner and on training runs music is an absolute must. For a long time I had my rather bulky windows phone in a waist strap with wires up through my shirt…… It worked but it was never great and couldn’t get to controls so if a song that wasn’t working for you came on you just had to endure it. The benefit of course was that my phone doubled up as a GPS tracker so I could log my runs etc. A month ago I bought a Smartwatch (Garmin forerunner 630) so that I could capture more info from my runs which is great, but I have been missing the music or still needing to take my phone. Buying these was a risk, very few reviews due to their recent release and I was worried about ease of use (after all, the controls are behind your ears), would they slip on my head or fall out easily as many buds do when running and would the sound quality be any good. I am pleased to say it has exceeded expectations in all areas. They fit on my head as if they were designed specifically for me, the quality of sound is amazing and the ambient noise mode that enables you to hear things going on around you is surprisingly crisp and it….. Well, it just works! I haven’t used them for swimming so can’t comment on the waterproof feature but for everything else, they are brilliant! I can’t recommend enough if you’re a runner who wants to ditch the smartphone and leave home without as much kit then this is what you want.
