These ear buds perform really well under all conditions. The sound quality is excellent both for music and when using them for hands free. With noise cancellation unless someone is almost shouting you really need to see their mouth moving to know you are being spoken to, though fortunately it is adjustable. All in all a good package even on Apple devices.

I toyed with the idea of these for ages and now I have them it seems so silly I waited so long to take the leap. Of course they are great, plenty of reviews say it. My delay in getting them was due to owning the over war xm4 headphones and I just could not see how these could match them in performance. I’m so glad they do and for anyone else in my shoes I’ll break down a short comparison:

Sound: Almost identical, I say almost because when you fiddle with the EQs on the sony app you get close to over ear quality. The difference is in the sound staging. The music sounds ever so slightly more compressed with the earbuds and so doesn’t feel as expansive. It’s not far off so don’t let that put you off. Mids, bass and trebles are also very close. The earbuds are a tiny bit louder.

Noise cancelling: Not as good as the over ears but I expected that, however the noise cancellation is bloody good when you factor in the size of the buds. I’ve tested on tube and outdoors and am satisfied. Covid has restricted ability to test on plane but then owning the overears means I will not use these on a plane due to shorter battery life and superior ANC on overears.

Phone call mic: Garbage. Neither headset is good at calls in environments with a lot of background noise but overears are better at delivering your voice to the listener and suppressing background noise. The buds muffle the voice and would annoy me if I received a call from someone speaking through them.

Controls: I was worried about this at first as I couldn’t figure out how it would work, luckily that is sonys problem and you will get the hang of it very quickly as they’ve done a good job.

Overall I think if you have overears it’s 100% worth getting the earbuds as they are better for warmer weather and working out (they don’t fall out for me at all). Sweat will leave you with smelly headphones and corroding electronics over time so you don’t want to ruin your expensive overears (earbuds are water resistant so will withstand sweat, rain and splashes).

Was really surprised (even after seeing reviews) with the sound quality and noise cancelling on these – they are a bit on the bigger side but its worth it – they compete with sound quality of bigger over ear headphones like ones by Bose and Sony

Very impressed with these Sony Earphones. The sound is fantastic and are very comfortable to wear for long periods. I am very picky when it comes to sound but I am thrilled with these sony buds. The bass is lovely and tight with very clear vocals and highs. I had to use the large buds for a total seal but fit perfect for me. If you have very small ears they may not be the best choice for you as they are sculpted to fit the shape of the ear.
I love these sony buds, performance is brilliant and super comfortable. The only downside I can see is they are not quick to take in and out as you have memory foam buds. If you need to frequently take them in and out then maybe choose a different type of earphone, they do have ambient mode which allows external sounds in and they automatically pause if you start talking to someone so not a problem for me. Noise cancelling function is amazing. Wish I had bought these sooner, Sony has produced another outstanding product.

Yes these are worth every penny and are excellent in every sense of the word. Use the Sony Phones app to choose your preferred options and update the firmware and give yourself a little time to get used to the noise-cancelling feature and you’ll enjoy the great sound quality of these tiny buds. Tech at it’s best here.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m not one for writing reviews to be honest but felt compelled to.

I’ve owned quite a few pairs of headphone/Ear Pods over the years and I’m quite fussy when it comes to the one’s I purchase. Mostly I stay within the premium level 150+.

They are a premium product, you can just tell when you open them, touch them and use them. The touch, feel and weight are on point.

    Pros

Sound quality is simply brilliant, the best I have ever experienced with an in ear headset. The volume is very punchy and you’ll never get to the max. The bass is superb and the mid to high end treble is beautifully balanced with no sign of struggling at all.

Build quality is premium and very good quality.

Wireless changing is a nice bonus.

    Setup is a doddle.

Sony’s apps seem very good and you have great flexibility to change settings such as graphic equaliser, what the earphones do when you take them out, when you start talking the sound will stop as they assume you are talking with someone which is very clever (although slightly annoying if you start sneezing LOL). You can log different settings depending on where you are, home, office, gym etc.

Cons – Volume Control – You can change what the touch sensitive buttons on both sides do. Trouble is you really need 3 LOL. Next track, play and pause is a given on one side, then the other side can be noise cancelling or volume and really you want both as there’s not easy way to change the noise cancelling without going into the Sony app so you really have to keep that. Which means no volume control on the ear pods which isn’t the end of the world as you an control this from your phone or watch.

Sony’s apps are very good but for some reason they lose connection with the earphones at times. It doesn’t stop them from working, just means you can’t change settings until you dock the earphone again.

The Fit – I’m yet to test them out when at the gym doing strength training but hopeful they will stay in place. But when stationary or walking they are fine. They fit by a memory foam type ear plug which you push in, it compresses and then expands to secure the fit. You get 3 sizes so you should find the one which works for you. Issues I’ve had in the past with others, they tend to lose their seal or you can ‘t get the fit just right so the sound quality changes if the fit is not 100%. There is none of that here.

Audio quality is provided in all the supply chain in both hardware (hi res certified) and software (LDAC CODEC).
If you pair this with an android with LDAC support and stream audio from high quality FLAC or Tidal master you’ll be able to hear the difference.
In contrast to Apple pros that might have even better drivers but they supply highly compression codec (AAC) these Sony can actually deliver better quality as in overall they do not bottleneck their drivers in the software (codec) as Apple does.

Recommended only if you have the whole supply chain for achieving this, otherwise you are loosing your money and it’s more worth it to have the airpods pro.

I bought these based on owning the XM3’s before this model, and professional reviews. I used to a be a reviewer, so I am bit circumspect about the latter, but the vast majority considered these to be good, so that was good enough for me.

    +
    1. Touch controls are more more easier to operate and are more responsive than they were for the XM3’s I had.
    2. Quality has improved.
    3. Better fit, less risk of falling out.
    4. Much smaller charging pod.

More difficult to remove from the charging pod.

The greater battery life is as yet untested.

Not many one star reviews from me, but the most important feature of these ear buds to me just does not work.

The sound quality is certainly very good, but “Noise Cancellation” and “Ambient Sound” just don’t function.

And yes, I have done all the “troubleshoots” and “resets” on the Sony website. Might just be a bad pair?

Fair enough, but I am stuck with a 200 pair of ear buds that perform in the real world like a 50 pair.

    Very disappointing.

UPDATE: Returned and asked for a replacement. Noise cancellation and “ambient sound” works on the new set. A very, very good set of earbuds. Replacement service was faultless. Only loses the final star because the first pair simply did not work as advertised.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI expected to like these because I loved the sound and performance of the wf-xm3. I was led to believe that the sound was only slightly improved, the sound quality is actually a very big improvement over the wf-xm3, they sound fantastic. First time I went out with them I listened to some favorite songs using LDAC, I was kind of shocked, I had high expectations but, they sounded so much better than I thought was possible with wireless buds. I have a playlist of songs I use with new IEMs and headphones to get an idea of how they sound. With the wf-xm4 many of those songs sounded better than I have heard them before, this list was started about 8 years ago. At home I usually listen with wired IEMs, nothing high end or over 400, I plug them into a DAC/amp. The sound from the wf-xm4 is not a step down from those, they sound better than some of my IEMs. I was having a great time with contemporary classical, jazz and trad Japanese, then I started with the electronic stuff like techno, they have really great bass, they can hit very hard and have great weight and impact without bloat. You may be surprised to learn that this type of bass is hard to come by in IEMs of this price. I’m only using the stock sound setting, no enhancements, you can get more with the app.

The active noise cancelling is very impressive, I reckon they lower environmental noise by about 80%. I have seen a few comments saying that the ANC doesn’t do anything, when you activate it in a busy noisy place it is like a giant thick blanket has been thrown over everything, if you don’t get that effect you either don’t have them in your ears right or they are faulty. Some people are under the impression that ANC cancels all noise, it doesn’t and never has done and people who expect that will be disappointed.

The ambient mode is very effective, just tapping the left earpiece activates it and you hear everything, you can adjust the level or it can adjust it for you. You can also set it to focus on voices, this is very cool, in a busy shop it can drop the volume on everything except speech which is crystal clear. It has a number of clever features, when I first heard of some of them I imagined that they won’t work very well in practice. The speak to chat feature drops the volume and goes into ambient mode when you start talking. I thought I would set it off whenever I sniffed, coughed or cleared my throat but, it works perfectly, it won’t work unless I speak and it is instantaneous.

LDAC makes an audible difference, I only turn it on when I am paying full attention to the music, I don’t need it when I’m doing other stuff and I would prefer to conserve the battery. Using AAC sounds great too, it is nice to be able to use LDAC but I would have bought them if they didn’t have it.

I had no problem with comfort, the included tips do a great job of providing a seal and are very comfortable. I checked and they work well with Final E tips, Comply truegrip, Spinfit cp360. Azla tips work too. I had heard that some people had trouble with the fit, I just pushed them in directly and got a perfect, secure fit, I then wore them for over 6 hours without a problem.

I obviously think they’re excellent wireless earphones, if I lost them I would have to buy another pair. I woujd recommend them just for listening to music, to get sound like this you would have to buy an IEM of siimilar value.

Okay what can I say, other than the sound stage is very wide. The stereo separation is so good it can be over looked by some. The bass and mid range is not so punching because of the stereo separation but it’s very enjoyable, very adequate indeed.

Anyone that says these don’t sound great is looking for a pair of beats plain and simple. One of the other reviews said get a set of Anker well I got a set of Anker and they had zero bass or mid and the sound stage was nonexistent. If you test these with other headphones you will hear the difference, well I can.

Overall the headphones work fantastic and as is expected. The sound is amazing with good mid and treble along with a nice base. The sound canceling feature works great and I appreciate this feature.

The only problem that I have had is that when removing the earbud from my ear the foam tip was stuck inside of my ear. Obviously this is a big problem and had to purchases some snugs earbud tips. Please note I was going to do this regardless but it pushed me to get my order in faster. ‘

Currently I have not used these headphones since this issue I just discussed but I will resume when I get my replacement tips.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWhen I got my last set of noise-cancelling headphones (QC-35s), Bose was literally the only game in town. Since then a lot of other companies have gotten into the noise cancelling market, and noise-cancelling earbuds became common, so I thought that I’d give these a try, given the glowing reviews they’ve had.

For eearbuds they do produce decent audio quality, though there’s no denying that they simply can’t reproduce as big a sound as the over-ear headphones do, but they are also a lot more practical for outside use than the Bose headphones. I think I’m going to keep the Bose headphones for use around the house and use these when travelling.

The noise-cancelling effect is surprisingly powerful, but somehow a bit more disconcerting at first than the one from the Bose headphones, probably because these are in-ear. You can hear yourself breathing and swallowing and it takes a while to get used to it. The first day of use was quite uncomfortable, but switching from the medium to small tips seems to have mostly resolved this, and while I don’t think I could wear these all day, they’re comfortable for a couple of hours.

You can pair these with a number of devices, but they can only connect to one device at a time, unlike the Bose which can connect to two devices. This is a bit of a shame but not a deal breaker.

The thing that really lets this product down is the controls. Instead of a physical button these have a touch-sensitive area on the shell. Finding the touch sensitive area by feel alone can be tricky, and it doesn’t always register your taps. You might end up pausing when you intended to skip tracks because one didn’t register. Even when working perfectly, the actual control options are clunky and not as good as the old Bose.

You can configure the controls within a number of presets with the app, the default being left earbud toggles between full noise-cancelling and “ambient noise” mode, where the microphones feed outside noise into the earbuds which is handy for holding a conversation without taking the earbuds out. The right earbud has the playback controls by default, which work broadly like the push-button control on the Bose (one tap pause/resume, two taps skip to next track, three taps skip to previous track, hold for Siri), but they’re missing the Bose tap and hold to fast-forward in a track, or double-tap and hold to rewind a track. If you reconfigure one of the earbuds for volume control then it’s tap to increase volume and hold to decrease, which just plain doesn’t work. There should be discrete controls for adjusting volume separately from the other controls. That’s a shame because aside from that, there’s a lot to like about these earbuds.

One of the big things to not like is the app, which for reasons known only to Sony seems to use a font that’s absolutely microscopic. It ignores whatever font size setting you’ve specified in the iPhone’s preferences, and if you have visual impairments it’s basically unreadable unless you use the built in Zoom feature, which makes the app even harder to navigate.

They’re a decent set of earbuds, but the ergonomics of the controls and the app really let them down.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe WF-1000XM4 is the latest of the in-ear Sony headphones. It is the most advanced earbuds that Sony ever produced. It has impressive specifications that you can find on the Sony website and that I will not detail here. It arrives in a eco-friendly package (well done Sony). It contains:

    – The case. It is used to carry the earphones, recharge them and keep them safe when not in use. The on-board battery can be charged via an USB-C socket. An LED light on the case shows the status of the battery. It is comparatively small and easy to carry.

    – A short USB-A to USB-C cable. It can be used to connect the case to the output of an USB power supply unit.

    – Documentation. There are many documents about warranty information, usage and various offers. You can read them all but if you are only interested in start using the WF, you can ignore all of them and read only the Operating Instructions. There is also a small pieces of paper for a free trial subscription. A word of warning: they want your credit card to activate the trial. I declined.

    – Two extra set of tips: small and large. The medium tips are installed on the headphones. I used headphones/earphones of various brands and I must say that the tips of the WF-1000XM4 are, in my opinion, the worse I ever found on any headphones. Let me be clear: they are really terrible. They are made of a flexible material that vaguely reminds a soft memory sponge. I found them uncomfortable, they don’t seal well and I fear, they might not be very durable.

/// Sound. They sound great. The trebles are clear, the mids are focused, the lows could be tighter but they are solid and musical. They are also pretty loud. If you are not entirely satisfied with the tone, the app allows a certain degree of fine tuning of the tone with a 5 band eq and an extra bass control. Do they sound 240 nice? Compared to the wired MDR-EX650AP (~40) they don’t. Obviously, there is to consider the impact of Bluetooth on the sound and the cost of the unit but it hardly justifies the difference in sound and price.

/// ANC (active noise cancellation). To make the ANC work correctly, it is crucial that the seal performed by the tips is perfect. If the seal is not perfect, the effect of the ANC is negligible. To help achieve a good isolation, the app has a functionality that checks the seal with the supplied tips. I followed the instructions, used the tips suggested (large), the app told me that the seal was good. Unfortunately, ANC didn’t work well and the sound was below average. Why? Because, regardless what the applications said, the seal was poor. Tip: if you notice that that tone changes with the ANC on, it probably means that the seal is poor.

Fortunately, Sony has kept the tips compatible across models and time. This means that it is possible to use Sony tips from other models. I had spare tips from my MDR-EX650AP and other models I purchased during the years I used them with the WF and the difference was jaw-dropping. First, the sound improved substantially. Second, the ANC worked properly.

Just a quick note about the ANC. The majority of the noise reduction is achieved through isolation. The ANC boosts the effect removing good part of the external sound that reaches your ears in spite the isolation. If the isolation is not good, the ANC cannot miraculously remove the sound that leaks in. In fact, if the seal is good, you will need ANC only when the external noise is continuous and loud (e.g. on an airplane or a train).

    /// Comfort
With alternative tips, the WF are as comfortable as other in-ears. They are not small and if your ear canal has a peculiar angle, it is possible that you will find them sticking out of your ears or they may feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there is no way to know it in advance. In my case, they do not fit inside my ears as tight as showed in the promotional photos but they do not stick out too much.

/// App/software. The iOS app is reasonably well designed but it has some limitations. The main one is the configuration of what the headphones do when one touches them (tap, double-tap, triple-tap…). It is possible to assign to each ear a given family of functions (e.g. volume). It is not possible to configure single gestures. In other words, I can say: right ear, volume control. I cannot say: right ear tap: play/pause, right-ear double-tap: next track, right-ear hold: volume down. There are also some auxiliary functionalities that I would define as clutter. Like, for example, a point-system based on the usage (why?)

*** The good (things I like)
    – Sound and ANC (with alternative tips)
    – Case
    – USB-C
    – Packaging

*** The Bad (things I don’t’ like but I can live with)
    – Configurability

    *** The Ugly
    – Tips. For 250 I expected multiple sets of tips of different types and materials. All of good quality.

    *** Final comments
Do I recommend them? Only if you managed to find alternative tips and you need ANC.

Bang for bucks, they are expensive. With the standard tips, they are not, in my opinion, worth half their price. If you have the cash and you like/need BT headphones, they are a nice toy but I wouldn’t be surprised if one could find equally good sounding headphones for less money. The ANC is a nice functionality but it’s not indispensable. In fact, I recommend you keep the ANC switched off to increase the time between charges. As the majority of the noise reduction is achieved via isolation, I suspect you won’t miss it.

Macht weiter so.

The ‘WF-1000XM4 True Wireless Earbuds’ from Sony are a set of high-end earbuds, designed to deliver close to audiophile-quality sound reproduction and effective background noise cancelling.

When being worn, the earbuds feel very comfy in your ear, with the bud ends not too cumbersome or invasive within your ear canal. They’re also much more lightweight than they look, so although you’ll feel them in your ear (like you would with any earphones or earbuds), their presence isn’t overly noticeable. Look-wise they don’t stick out too much and generally look like any other earbuds.

The silicone ear gels that come with the earbuds allow for different sized ears. I use the smallest ear gels that come with them and find these fit my ears perfectly. When being worn, the earbuds really don’t feel like they’re going anywhere. The ear gels and general shape of the earbuds help to really hold the earphones securely in place, although I wouldn’t necessarily try going out running or anything like that with them in.

Sound quality wise, these earbuds are nothing short of incredible. Ok, so we knew that Sony are a good brand and generally deliver quality audio products, but to be honest, I didn’t think they’d deliver something so close to audiophile quality. Incredibly crystal-clear quality and such a richness in notes. There’s a rich, deep bass and they’re able to reproduce a mountain of complex layers of notes without any amalgamation or loss to the subtler layers. Acoustic tones provide a natural sound that resonates through each note.

The active noise cancelling is absolutely superb too. It successfully blocks out any surrounding noise, with just the music you’re listening too filling this silent void.

All in all, I’m absolutely blown away by the performance of these earbuds. I use them for walks and commuting, which really works well for me as the active noise cancelling they offer is incredible and I get to enjoy my music to the full degree whilst out and about. Highly recommended.

My ears are apparently not symmetrical. I know…who knew? This means that these amazing earbuds plastic case rubs on my left (sort of upper lobe). A real shame but after giving them a good and trying all the various sizes of buds for a few weeks, they have to go back as that part of the ear is red from the abrasion. I had Sennheiser Momentum Wireless before these and they had a straightforward bud-in-ear design which I think I will have to revert to.
For anyone without such auricular concerns these are amazing.

Good sound, the texture build is very rough and cheap like feeling, the tips of the earbuds is easily ruined and will melt after a wipe with wate

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve tried lots of wireless earbuds, but these are the best so far. So comfy to wear, and they fit inside my ears really well. The sound is amazing, both for music and for phonecalls. The noise cancelling works well too. I love them.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought these after returning my iPod pros to Apple after repeated fails. These sound a-mazing. The closest I’ve heard in terms of a full sound system – you can almost feel the tight bass pulsing through your head. The rest of the sound is equally good. Pure and clean. Not quite as convenient in terms of iOS ecosystem integration (eg find my bl**dy earphones etc!) but I’m willing to live with that for the fact that they work and sound great.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThere is not much more I can add to the raving reviews already posted by others. I have been a long time user of over the ear noise cancelling headphones such as Bose. I have never been impressed by the limited number of in-ear wireless headphones I tried, let alone those with noise cancelling. The music quality of this WF-1000XM4 is superb and and the noise cancelling genuinely works, obviously not at the same level as Sony’s WH-1000MK4 which I also have.

Update 18-10-2021, the sound quality and noise cancelling are actually better than my initial report. I found that by looking into the mirror I was not seating the earphones properly in my ears. The sound quality is absolutely superb. These earphone are now viable alternatives to these big over the ear headphones. The only down side is they cannot be used on planes for wired connection. If only if I can add one more star over the 5 already given !

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersUltimately, you buy in ear headphones, or indeed headphones of any type for the quality of sound. The Sony WF-1000XM4 are good, indeed better than their predecessors, the WF-1000XM3, but to my ears (!) they are not the best. I spent a morning comparing the Sony WF-1000XM4’s with Bower and Wilkins P17’s. In my view the B&W P17’s have a purer, more rounded performance producing greater detail. By comparison, the Sony WF-1000XM4’s sound is open and airy and just not quite so detailed. I prefer the B&W P17’s for sound hands down. Buttheir battery life is very poor. You might make 4 hours at a push. The Sony WF-1000XM4’s will nearly make 9 hours! Amazingand a further 2-3 charges in the case! However, there is an irritating glitch. I think it is a glitch in the noise cancelling software? Sometimes the left earphone just drops out and you have to touch the surface of the earphone to fire it up again. Both the Sonys and B&W’s are as reasonably comfortable as they could be for long term wear. Down side for the B&W P17’s? – you pay 100 more. In practice, I use both sets – default to the Sony’s on a day-to-day basis, but for enjoying sound heaven I use the B&W’s!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe Sony WF-1000XM4 are 249.00 at the time of this review.

They come in eco packaging which is good to see. Construction and materials of the actual earbuds are fantastic.

Setting up the buds was easy. There is an app to download, and pairing is easy through touch and holding the sensors for 5 seconds.

I’ve never had buds or headphones at this price point. They outperform everything I have, and the quality is excellent. Great sound across the range and bass. The noise cancelling is superb too.

To maximise the quality, make sure you use the right tips and they fit snugly into your ears. The right ones should mould to the inside of your ears to make a good seal.

The buds charge inside the case which in-turn can be recharged via USB-C.

Having used these for over a month now, I can recommend them.

    Fundamentally excelle

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese things are sick! Worth the money. Most of the features are super cool. The speak to chat is a bit gimmicky and only really works if you don’t sing along or cough or make any other kinda noise but I still love the innovation, Sony. I had the Bose Soundsports before these and was worried I’d miss the device switch button but it honestly hasn’t been a deal breaker. If you can afford these, get them. They’re worth the spend!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThe Sony WF-1000XM4s are overall really great, but I’ve sent mine back and here’s why.

    – They sound amazing, probably the best from a pair of truly wireless earbuds that I’ve heard. I really enjoyed the sound stage and music separation and if something is slightly off for you, you can adjust the EQ.

    – Noise cancellation is top quality and as you’ve probably read elsewhere, nearly as good as the over ear WH-1000XM4s. You feel isolated and within a bubble. Ambient pass through works very well with noises sounding natural. The external noises sound amplified if very close but in general this works well. It is slightly behind the AirPods Pro but very nearly the same.

    – I love the design, obviously this is subjective but I really like the feel, and the brass accents. The case is small and minimal. It is built well but the hinge is slightly looser than the AirPods Pro, which have very tight tolerances.

    – Surprisingly for me, they fit really well. I normally cannot find earbuds to fit. My ears are medium in size but in-ear buds normally get moist and fall out – these did not. They hold in snug and the shape of the earbuds themselves fits into the outer ear to hold everything in place. I do wonder if I had smaller ears whether this would work as well, but for me they were great. Once in I originally experienced some discomfort. I stuck with it and found that turning the earbuds down in orientation, with the brass ring being the lower most point in my ear, really helped with ear fatigue and all was good for hours after that discovery.

    – A key issue normally for Bluetooth headphones is the Bluetooth connectivity. I understand that these earphones don’t have multi-point pairing, but I actually like the WF-1000XM4s Bluetooth implementation even better. They can’t connect to two devices but they can store multiple devices in memory and unlike other headphones and earphones, switching between devices is completely seamless. Once they’ve previously been connected you simply select the earphones from your device and they connect. When I’m walking around listening to music from my iPhone and sit down at my desk, I click on the earphones on the Bluetooth menu on my Mac and instantly the headphones connect and have a strong connection. If I get up and walk away and click on the earphones from the iPhone and they pick up the connection and start playing. I really like this setup as the earphones don’t have ambiguity of which device needs priority and never get confused.

    – My main issue with the earphones is the quality of the ear tips. I actually really enjoyed the foam tips instead of the normal silicone. I think the foam don’t get as slippy when sweating and therefore hold better in the ear. My issue came after only a few uses – the foam tips started to disintegrate. The material was literally falling away and the outer coating was peeling off in places. This happened after only a couple of sessions of using the earphones and was extremely disappointing. I know I can go out and buy alternatives but for 250 I expect the ear tips to last longer than a week.

Overall I have to say, I do love these earphones and with different quality foam tips I would keep these and use them everyday. If you intend on using other tips then these are a great purchase in my opinion.

Amazing earphones, but tips fall apart.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI bought these after wasting my money on Bose wireless headphones. I needed some comfortable ones and although the Bose ones were great in many ways, they were very uncomfortable to wear and kept falling out.
I have the over ear Siby version of these so thought I would order the in ear ones. Wow! I love them.

They are very comfortable to wear, even when lying down. I am a side sleeper and love to fall asleep with music playing but have to avoid keeping my partner awake. These are so comfortable compared to the Bose ones. My partner also says he cannot hear any peripheral noise from them either which is great.
The noise cancelling option is awesome. We have builders in the house at the moment and the constant banging has been driving me crazy. I now just put these in and turn in the noise cancelling up to max and I am greeted by pure heavenly silence. Bliss!
The sound quality is amazing too. Great base and the sound adapts well to a range of musical genres.

These are a must have for music lovers who want it all from in ear wireless headphones.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersThe sound on these earphones is amazing. Well worth the price. But the earbuds are a real problem. I was unable to get an airtight fit for the tips supplied, even using the large size, which meant no noise cancelling.

I spent three weeks trying to solve the problem, during which time a I bought a set of large tips from Comply, which didn’t work either. I then saw a recommendation for SednaEarfit XELASTEC large size tips. I bought them and it was job done. The tips went in easily and achieved an airtight seal immediately.

Although the sound of the WF-1000XM4s is great, I’ve taken off one star because I’ve had to spend 50 to solve a problem Sony should have solved without my going to the extra trouble and expense. If SednaEarfit could produce a tip that worked, why couldn’t Sony?

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe sound is immense. I had the original Sony wf 1000x (was an early adopter purchase, sounded great but useless battery), a marked improvement.
Battery life is insane, you’ll not wear them enough in a day for them to not have charge.
Play/pause and ANC tougb functionality is good, but you have to use vol control on phone or voice assistant (not an inconvenience imo).
Case is small, but there are others on market that are smaller. Little light that lights up when charging and low. Wirelessly charges on qi charger.

I’d used the silicone tips from previous model – fit more comfortably for me. If you have smaller ears I would suggest this also (you can buy loads on amazon to get the right fit, more personalised imo).

Bottom line – if you like in ears and are mainly looking for amazing sound I honestly can’t recommend these enough. Expensive, but worth every penny compared to others I’ve used.

If you like in ears, you'll love these.

As no se cierra accidentalmente.

Graves: Son Sony, no te van a faltar nuca.

Escena musical: Perfectamente amplia, precisa y reconocible.

Alfa y Omega: mejor sonido y mayor silencio. Comparativa con la competencia

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese are by far the best earphones I’ve ever used. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. I don’t think I ever heard music so clear and with all nuances of the song. Especially if you use noise cancellation it is an incredible experience. I like all the cool features it has, like it pauses the music if you take the earpiece out, of lowers the volume if you start speaking. When not using noise cancellation you can clearly hear what is being said around.
Even though they are with touch control, i like that they don’t stop or do any actions I don’t want them to when touching them to adjust their position.

One thing that I might say about them is that they tend to be a bit big for my ears, and even if I like the memory foam earpieces they tend to come out that’s why I wouldn’t recommend them for sports. Unfortunately they do that even with the smallest piece in place.

But only because that I don’t think it deserves to have one star removed because it makes up for that in the quality and easiness of use.
Connects to the phone in a flash and stays connected without problems. I haven’t experienced bad connection so far. When calling you can hear clearly and are heard clearly without having to speak too loud. Just normal speaking is heard well.

Battery life is good and I didn’t get a chance to use them intensely at one time, they were only charged once and still lasting after more than a month.
Really impressed and amazed by the quality of these.

    Incredible sound quality

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese are every bit as good for sound quality as my over-ear WH-1000XM3’s, and perhaps a bit better for noise cancellation, since they effectively block stray sounds from entering your ears. Functionality is good, with the ability to pause and play, skip forward or back tracks, take calls, turn ambient sound on or off, and pair the device with a tap of either earpiece. I’m happy to report that Bluetooth peering is much better than with my WH-1000XM3’s, which I would frequently need to re-peer with my iPhone almost every time I used them. These peer every time, and almost instantly. Very reliable.

The charging case is very tiny, and will easily fit in a trouser pocket. It’s easy to use, and they are held securely in place – and the lid closed – with strong magnets, so there’s little chance of them falling out in transit. They charge quickly, and they have a decent run time on one charge. I’ve never had them run out in use. Just make sure you plug the case in regularly to keep its battery topped up.

You get three different sizes of rubberised ear buds with them, and they are easy to take on and off. My only problem is that I found whichever size I used – they would fall out of my ears at the least provocation. I’m pretty sure this is my ears rather than the earphones however, as I’ve always had issues with in-ear phones falling out. I’m sure if they generally stay put in your ears, you’ll find these do too. They’re not especially heavy or bulky.

So top marks for sound quality, noise cancellation and functionality – unfortunately they are just not well suited to my ears, which is a great shame.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhilst not cheap these are excellent in ear headphones, with outstanding noise cancellation. A massit step up over the older model in terms of comfort I am a big fan of the memory foam style ear plugs

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersQuite probably the best true wireless earbuds on the market. I love my AirPods Pro and find them incredibly versatile but, with one exception, which is possibly unique to me, the WF-1000XM4 beat them, and the other competition, in all respects.

The sound quality is superb, naturally bassy without overpowering the mids and highs. Music is clear and dynamic with excellent separation. My go to testing playlist encompasses everything from jazz and classical to extreme metal, prog and dance, complex, technical playing to atmospheric, ambient soundscapes; and the Sonys cope with it all. Spoken word recordings, audiobooks and podcasts are clear too.

ANC is excellent and cuts out the vast majority of external sounds even on airplane and London Tube journeys. I am not a huge fan of Sony’s companion app, having used it on both over-ear and in-ear headphones previously, but it does give good control over ANC and tailored equalisation, as long as you turn off the annoying ‘adaptive ANC’ setting. There is a really useful feature which allows temporary suspension of ANC, and reduced volume, by holding a hand over the left bud, allowing short conversations such as ordering coffee or reacting to a tannoy announcement.

The packaging is largely paper and pressed card and gives the appearance of eco-friendliness. The carrying case itself is tactile and significantly smaller than the previous WF-1000XM3 version. Call quality is also significantly improved on the previous Sony buds. Battery life is excellent, charging via wireless or USB-C.

Ear gels are supplied in three sizes and are soft and pliable and provide a really good fit. My left ear, however, does not like earbuds generally. They tend to fall out, the AirPods Pro shocking me with their ability to stay in my ears. The Sonys are better than most but I could not use them for strenuous exercise, certainly not for running. I will be keeping my AirPods with me but the WF-1000XM4 will, I suspect, be in my ears at least as frequently, other than when running.

    Sony take the crow

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy partner has tested these ear buds from Sony, this is his review.

    Introduction:
There is no need to introduce Sony as a brand. Decades’ worth of quality electronic products whose name is synonymous with high quality and market leading. You can almost guarantee that if you buy something from Sony, you should surely get your money’s worth. Sony have been making headlines with their Noise Cancelling On-Ear wireless headphones in recent times, with their noise cancelling capabilities beating out the rest of the competition at the highest end.

    Packaging:
Sony have done well here to minimise the impact on the environment by providing no plastic whatsoever. Only paper-based material is used (and not much of it at that). They have been careful to not excessively use too much packaging. Top marks in this department.

    Expectations:
I had high expectations for these ear buds. My understanding is that in-ear headphones (wired or wireless) provide the best form of noise isolation which is inherent due to their design of sitting within the ear canal. I therefore had the expectation that the noise cancellation abilities of these ear buds would be superior to on-ear headphones. In use, I would say that this appears to be true compared to the Sennheiser Noise Cancelling headphones that I own.

    Sound Quality:
As sound quality is somewhat subjective and difficult to measure without any specialist equipment, I can only give my personal opinion on what these ear buds sound like quality wise. To my ears, they provide a very fulfilling and immersive audio experience. Listening to some known music tracks appears to fill in some gaps that I did not previously hear on lesser quality headphones.

    LDAC:
There is one section that I wanted to touch on which is LDAC, the high resolution Audio Codec from Sony which these ear buds support. I tested this with my Huawei P30 Pro which supports the LDAC codec. There was a little bit of configuration that I had to do which I discovered after some trial and error. Firstly, after a little bit of research, I discovered that in order to check whether your Android device is transmitting in either SBC, AAC or LDAC, you need to enable Developer Options (enabled by tapping the Build Number option 7 times in Settings > About Phone > Build Number). At this point, as you can see in my screenshot, I found that AAC was selected by default and I could not actually select LDAC. Only after setting the Bluetooth Connection Quality option to “Priority on Sound Quality” in the Sony app, did the LDAC option become available (see next screenshot).

After playing with all of the settings and listening to some lossless music in FLAC file format, I think I can hear that LDAC at its highest setting of 990kbps/909kbps is “clearer” than the SBC codec. However I think that I would not ordinarily be able to tell the difference unless I played a short piece of high quality lossless music side by side and focused intently on trying to hear any differences, much like I did for this test. However, I think I may be individual in this regard as I have spoken to friends in the past who can clearly hear such differences where I have not been able to do so.

    Noise Cancellation:
In noise cancellation mode, when someone tries to speak to me, I mostly cannot hear what the person is saying. These earphones would be great for situations where you may just want to shut out any noise whatsoever and not just background low frequency hums which noise cancellation is usually very good at. I decided to try out ear buds at a vehicle MOT test centre recently, a location where there were multiple forms of background noise which would need isolating from my ears if I decided to watch or listen to some content. I was pleasantly surprised as to how effective the noise cancellation was. With noise cancellation on, I could not hear the background music being played at the venue and I also could not hear the sound of engines revving. The test video content that I was watching was instructional, so it was essential to be able to hear the content. The ear buds appeared to excel in this test scenario.

    The App:

The app user interface appears to be well designed and thought out. Most of the options are where you would expect them to be. Firmware updates to the ear buds are sent wirelessly and take a short period of time to send over the Bluetooth connection.

Where I was particularly impressed though was with the Adaptive Sound Control feature. This can automatically detect what kind of motion you are currently doing and choose a noise cancellation mode most appropriate to your activity. For instance, if it detects that you are walking, it will choose the ambient noise mode, which is both sensible and safe for the user and everyone around them. The mode that the app places the earbuds in is user-definable, so you can choose to have it in noise-cancelling mode, ambient noise mode or off completely in any of the actions that are detected.

In practical use, the Adaptive Sound Control feature works well. When walking, the automatic detection kicks in within seconds and is very functional, for instance, when pausing for a short period, perhaps at a pedestrian crossing, it does not revert to “Staying” mode until a certain period of no movement, allowing any short periods of waiting to elapse before fully deciding that the user has stopped walking. Sony appear to have thought about the design of this automation well, with the default configuration most likely covering most people’s requirements. However, if required the user can alter the default settings as mentioned previously.

For instance, during my testing of the ear buds at the MOT vehicle testing centre with both music and engine noise revving in the background, I found that when sitting the default setting of noise cancellation was suitable. However, at some points I was interested as to what was going on around me and changed the mode to ambient noise on a few occasions. It was suitably audible as you would expect – but then I discovered the option in the app that has further control to adjust the volume of the ambient noise. I have to say that I am very impressed with the level of thought that had gone into the design of this product.

There are also a variety of other features in the app such as a Speak-to-Chat feature (pauses sound automatically if you begin speaking), EQ settings, Bluetooth Connection Quality (for allowing LDAC to be used as mentioned earlier), 360 Reality Audio setup and DSEE Extreme (upscaling technology).

    Phone Calls and Video Conferencing:
I have made a few test phone calls and the person on the other end has always informed me that the audio from my side is loud and clear. I have also made a few calls using video conferencing tools and can report that everything is as you’d expect.

    Size and Fit:
As a previous owner of a handful of IEM style earbuds, I have always had difficulty and reservations with finding the right fit. Sets usually come with multiple sized ear buds to fit a variety of ear canal sizes. Sony have provided Small, Medium and Large sized buds. I started out with the default installed mediums but to my horror they fell out of my ears within 10 seconds of walking around. This was my fault as my initial gut feel was that the mediums felt a bit too big for my ear canals. After switching to the small sized buds, they have seemed quite secure. I have gone for a run with them (something that I was never really able to do with any previous set without having hooks around the top of the ears) and they have not yet fallen out. An improvement Sony could make here would be to provide more different sized buds as while they fit my ears OK, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the smallest buds were too big for some people’s ears. I have owned much cheaper sets of IEMs where more sizes of buds have been included than just three.

    Battery Life:
This is stated to have 8 hours of use from a single charge, with a further 16 hours from the carry case. You can also charge the case wirelessly should you wish to. In emergencies, a 5 minute charge will give you an hour’s worth use.

    Controls:
The ear buds have touch sensitive areas on the main area of each ear bud. By default, the app has one-tap, two-tap and three-tap actions (again user-definable if you wish). I found the defaults sensible enough. The touch sensitivity seemed good to me.

    Conclusion:

Overall, I would say that I am impressed with the offering from Sony with their WF-1000XM4 in ear Wireless Headphones.

The noise cancellation abilities are very good, the app is particularly well designed, and its features have been well thought out and work well for real life scenarios. I would say that the app exceeded my expectations, to the point where I found that I did not even realise I would need such features.

Although the small sized ear buds did fit my ear canals well, a suggestion to Sony would be perhaps to include a wider range of the polyurethane buds than just small, medium and large sizes.

Sound quality to me is something that I would regard as subjective and difficult to measure without appropriate tools. To my ears, the sound quality appeared to be of high quality, as one would expect at this kind of price point. Although I did find some differences in audio quality between an SBC Bluetooth Codec and LDAC, I myself was hard pressed to actually find these differences. Apart from the discussion point of Bluetooth Codecs, I found the sound quality of these ear buds to be very good indeed.

Impressive from Sony all round. Noise Cancellation and Isolation, App, Usability and Sound Quality.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersGanz einfach: Musikgenuss pur erleben.

Also InEars.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our Users2 months ago I heard of the new WF-1000XM4 which had released, I held out on buying one since I knew I’d eventually get one to review and I now feel bad that I didn’t pay for these, they truly are the most impressive things and I’m surprised they didn’t completely destroy airpod sales.

Where do I even start? There is so much that is incredible about these buds.

    Build quality:
They are made out of some very strange material, it looks and feels great but I really couldn’t tell you what it is, the outside of the case is also made out of this material and the inside is some kind of plastic, I really like it and it feels very premium.

Unlike most earbuds (including the big boys like the Airpods Pro) use silicone eartips, the WF-1000XM4 uses some kind of foam which is sadly uncommon, I far prefer this to silicone but it is a lot harder to keep clean, after about a month of use my eartips have turned noticably yellow (this may not be as much of an issue on the black model) despite how often I clean my ears (I do have a lot more earwax than most people though).

I absolutely love the style of these buds too, the gold and beige works so well together, really does look high end and makes me feel very cool even though most people probably think I look stupid (I doubt that’s because of the buds though) I like the look of the black model too but haven’t seen them in person.
Before getting these I mostly wanted the black model, but now that I have the beige one in my hands I am having second thoughts, they look so good and scream quality.

    Sound Quality:
    The sound is incredible!!!
I do not own a single pair of earbuds that even come close to how much I like these (including my beloved VR3000), the sound is neutral which is very common for consumer buds in this price range which makes me very happy since neutral is my preferred sound signature, the soundstage is definitely there but certainly not as wide as my VR3000, nearly every genre of music I listen to is enjoyable on these buds which is surprisingly uncommon since I often switch between headphones when listening to orchestral music and something like rock or edm, everything sounds great on these even if you’re an enthusiast, you certainly won’t be disappointed with the sound of these.

If the neutral sound isn’t your cup of tea you’re still fine because these include an EQ feature (which is standard at this point) and it saves to the buds so you don’t have to configure it each time you pair it, if you want more bass you can have more bass!

I did use these for calls a few times and my Dad (the only person I really call) said it sounds alright, can’t really say much more than that since it’s kind of hard to hear what it sounds like for myself.

    Comfort:
Now this might be the most controversial part of this review, I personally found the comfort fine, the tips have a great grip on the inside of my ears and shape nicely even for circular tips (oval is my preferred shape, the 85t for example has oval tips).
This really is something that will depend greatly on the person, it’s definitely worth trying these out and even if the tips don’t work for you, there’s bound to be some third party tips that work for you. Believe me, it’s worth it to use these.

    Noise Cancelling:
If this isn’t the zenith of active noise cancelling then I don’t know what is, my experience with these was incredible.
The first time I put them in my ears was just to test the ANC, I was in my room with a fan on and could still hear it through the buds and was a bit disappointed, it wasn’t at all what I expected…
    3 seconds later… I heard a ping sound…
    The fan noise was gone.
That absolutely blew my mind, at one point I could hear the fan through the buds but (I assume) they heard the noise and filtered it out for me, incredible.

More recently I have been using these buds at work (office) and they completely filter out ‘s long one-sided discussions about her latest boyfriend (come on it’s only been 2 weeks since the last one!)
Oh and the air conditioner is completely gone too, it really is nice to have such a compact device that can give complete silence in an instant, technology has come so far.

Along with the ANC you also get ambient sound, this is very useful for listening in on talking about me behind my back thinking I can’t hear them.
It works great and gives me full immersion in the real world (which doesn’t happen often, even without buds), it isn’t as noisy as a lot of other ambient sound features are either which is great.

    Additional Features Worth Mentioning:

One small (or big, I don’t really know) thing that these include is Sony’s LDAC codec, I don’t really know what the benefit is to it but supposedly it’s better than whatever we normally use, I did notice a difference when switching to it but it could just be placebo, I definitely recommend using it since my brain is convinced it makes my music sound better.

When I first saw these I thought to myself “oh god, they use touchpads? ugh!” but after using these I am really starting to change my view on them, these are absolutely the best touchpads I have ever used, they are extremely responsive, the touchpads have quite a big surface area so it’s hard to miss them, I was worried that they would accidentally go off because of how little force is needed but I did not experience a single false-press in my entire month of using these buds daily, they only ever respond when I press my finger against them.
The main issue I have with touchpads is that they are uncomfortable, I do not like slightly pressing the buds into my ear, it’s irritating, since these are not hook style buds the touchpads sit on the outer part of your ear where your skull is, that with the low force required means the eartip barely moves (if at all) when you press the touchpads, extremely happy.

The battery life is excellent, I do recharge these often but in the times that I have used them without charging I got to use them for many hours, I often use these while at work (which is 8 hours each day) so if I ever forget to charge I do not need to worry since these have a whopping 24 hours combined battery life, that can easily last me the whole week.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 was an incredible experience and nobody will ever take these astonishing earbuds away from me, they truly are impeccable and I really don’t think it can get better than this.

I could write a lot more about these but I will end it here since this is probably the longest review I have ever written, thank you so much for reading this far!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe Sony WF-1000XM4 True Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones are a great set of headphones when you’re on the move. The noise cancelling performance is incredible for a set of in-ear headphones, hugely reducing the background noise wherever you are and the sound quality for music and podcasts/audiobooks is really impressive. The headphones also come with a really useful “ambient sound” mode where you can turn off the noise cancelling with a single tap of the left earbud to allow you to conduct conversation or to give you clear sound of your surroundings. The built in microphones are great for calls, with callers having no issue hearing me when I took calls with them in. My only criticism would be that the headphones themselves are on the heavier side and so I found I couldn’t wear them for more than a few hours at a time.

Sony have put a great deal of thought into the environmental impact of their packaging for these headphones and have nearly eliminated the single-use plastic in the pacakaging, the outer band being the only plastic item in the package. Everything else is made of cardboard so it can be easily recycled but the packaging still maintains a premuim feel.

The headphone case is compact and has a nice, positive “snap” when it opens or closes and magnets make sure your earbuds are seated firmly in the case. The case fits easily in a pocket and is light enough you’ll barely notice it’s there.

The app provided makes setting up the headphones easy and does a good job of walking you through the setup process, making sure you have the right tips for the earbuds to get an airtight fit and explaining how to use the headphones and get the most out of them.

Overall, I’m really impressed with these headphones, every aspect of them has been well thought out and put together. They’re a high-end product and I think Sony have justified the price-tag. Recommended.

Great headphones with strong noise-cancelling performance.

The Sony wireless headphones are very comfortable to wear, look trendy and actually stay in the ear, which is perfect for the gym or sports such as cycling.
The sound is absolutely incredible! You can hear amazing quality and pick up on sounds you never knew were in the music, it gives you an amazing experience of fully submerging yourself into your favourite tunes.

The headphones come in a really cool box and the packaging is all eco friendly.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersExcellent earbud.
Pros – sound quality, call quality, microphone
Cons – noise cancelling average, can only connect to one device at a time

I wanted earbuds with a quality microphone that isolate my voice from all other sound and these do a great job.

The earbuds are bassy but good at picking up the higher notes and the buds fit really comfortable in ear (I’ve fallen asleep with mine in). Noise cancellation doesn’t sound much different to the adaptive settings, but this could just be how I’ve set mine up (this didn’t impact my enjoyment of the music I listened to).

Mine is linked with Alexa as the voice assistant and its brilliant!

Hopefully a software update will mean the device can pair with more than one device.

Great set of earbuds and ticks all the boxes that were important to me

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’m extremely impressed with these Sony noise-cancellation earbuds. They’re every bit as good as my Apple AirPods, but fit better and, in my opinion, have a more efficient noise cancellation function. They come beautifully packaged (and include three sizes of ear pieces to ensure a perfect fit). The case is neat, small, and charges either wirelessly or with a cord. Charge seems to last a long time, and every time I insert them in my ears a reassuring voice tells me the battery level is fully charged. Music quality sounds great (although I’m no expert audiophile). Phone or FaceTime conversations are so clear, the first time I used these earbuds I thought someone was standing right behind me! Best of all, the noise cancellation function is truly excellent, and although I’ve not had the opportunity to test them on a long haul flight, I’m confident these will be ideal; I can finally leave my bulky noise-cancelling headphones behind and take these more conveniently-sized earbuds in my hand luggage instead.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe first thing I noticed about these Earbuds was the packaging, which looked to made from recycled cardboard. Inside are the Earbuds, some booklets, a set of tips and a cable plus the case.

The second thing I noticed was the unusual design. One the outer side of the buds is what I assume is a microphone for the ANC, but it looks a bit odd sticking out. The Buds themselves are quite chunky but when I put them in a turned them they were incredibly secure and comfortable. The tips are, unusually, not silicon, but some sort of memory foam material which works quite well.

Like a lot of Earbuds these days they have touch sensitive controls. Normally I find these a nuisance as I tend to press them when I don’t want to, but I had no problem with these. Pairing required a press on both buds to get them up and running.

Once up and running, I tried various genres of music – a bit of Wings, some Jazz (Dave Holland) and electronica. The sound quality is absolutely superb, with clear sounds at all levels and all the details showing through. The soundstage is pretty impressive, with a real spatial feel to the different instruments and sound effects – for example, distant water and creaking of oars on a Blanck Mass album sounded as if they were coming from somewhere in the distance. Just for the sound quality alone these are worth buying, but there are more features.

I found the ANC really quite good, probably one of the best ANCs I’ve heard, as it managed to block out most of the noises around me such as TVs and fans without any detrimental effect to the music. I took these out into the city centre and found the performance was stunning – blocked out all the noise of the traffic and in a noisy cafe blocked out the noise of the other customers and the piped music. Incredible and impressive performance here.

You can control the ANC from the buds, but I use the app – Headphones – to turn it on and off. Application integration is excellent and there’s an Equalizer plus some interesting features such as ‘Speak to chat’ that automatically pauses the music and sets ANC to ‘ambient’ (IE all sound passes through) so you can talk. This works really well.

Another feature in the application is an ‘adaptive’ sound control that allows you to configure the mode via location – so you can get the eabuds to switch to ambient mode automatically based on a map location.

One of my favourite features is the fact there are ear detection sensors that will detect when the Buds are removed or placed in the ears. Take one out and the music pauses; put it back in and the music restarts. This is perhaps a must-have feature for me as I like to be able to just take them out and not have to stop the music manually.

I can’t praise these enough. If you’re looking for a set of Earbuds that sound fabulous and come with brilliant application integration, then these are definitely worth investing in.

Brilliant Earbuds with tremendous sound and stunning ANC

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is my first set of “proper” wireless headphones as I tend to prefer over-ear ‘phones. In fact, my go-to pair of headphones are a nine year old pair of MDR-1BTs, which still sound great and still have fantastic battery life when using on bluetooth.

I have tried wireless headphones in the past, but never really got on with them as they made my ears sore, or they kept falling out.

From opening the Amazon box I could tell these were going to be very good indeed. The box isn’t flashy at all, a pretty unimpressive box made from recycled paper. There is a OBI strip around the box to keep it together, this just states the model on the front and the barcode and stuff on the bottom. Worth noting, once this is broken the box won’t stay together ever again as it is made in two separate halves, which don’t click together.

Once you get inside the packaging you can see why these are as much as they are. The buds are in their little charging case and look really nice, very expensive. The charging case is Type C, which is handy as 99% of our devices are Type C nowadays. Sony do provide you with a charging cable, but it is ridiculously short, so I just used one of my phone charges.

I installed the Sony Headphones app and once I had charged the buds for a while the app (eventually) detected the buds. Once detected, you can see the percentage of charge each bud has, which is a nice touch. However, you cannot (or I couldn’t anyway) see a charging percentage when they are charging away in their case.

The buds are bigger than i imagined they would be, but they fitted nicely and felt comfortable. I wore them for a good couple of hours while working from home and didn’t get sore ears at all, so that was pleasing.

The sound, it has to be said, was mightily impressive. I listened to a range of things from Spotify and files on my phone and they sounded amazing. From Kraftwerk to The Lark Ascending, the sound was immersive. Bass was great, not too weak and not too “boomy”. The app is very useful and let’s you customize the sound with it’s equaliser.

You can tap either bud to do different things, for example tap once on the right bud and the music pauses, tap twice and it jumps to the next track, three times and it goes to the previous track.

You can tap the left put for ambient mode, so the music goes quiet if you’re in a shop ordering coffee or something like that.

I didn’t take any calls whilst wearing the phones, so can’t really comment on call quality, etc. Although we do have an Alexa, again I haven’t tried that with the buds either, but I will set that up evenutally.

The app is pretty feature rich and can even analyze your ears! I didn’t do any of that.

These buds are pretty amazing, fantastic sound quality, a feature-rich app that lets you customize the buds. The ability to skip tracks with just a tap is also a great feature.

Are they worth 250? Not sure about that, but they are a fantastic set of wireless buds, which should please even the most discerning of gadget-heads.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThe Sony WF-1000XM4 True wireless earbuds with noise cancelling were really easy to pair and set up with my iPhone 12 Pro, but before jumping in and changing settings and setting up your personal desired assistant I would get the perfect fit with the included three pairs of ear tips. There is large, medium and small ear tips and once you have chosen the perfect fit for your ear canal, This will enhance your listening and noise cancelling experience. I personally found it better to squeeze the ear tip whilst placing it in my ear. Then they expand and create a better seal, as the ear tips are made of a silicone memory foam material. They are very comfortable and using them for a couple of hours each time I experience no discomfort. The earbuds sit securely and I had no issues of them falling out or feeling like they was going to fall out. The earbuds are very informative when connecting to my phone, As they have an audible voice that announces Bluetooth is connected which is quick and it also announces the battery level of the earbuds. The touch controls on each of the earbuds are excellent and responsive. The right earbud with A single tap plays and pauses, A double tap skips your track forward and three taps skips your track backwards. To summon your assistant single tap and hold the right ear bud, Which I personally was using Amazon’s Alexa. The assistant was quick and easy to set up just had to allow certain permissions, you can voice activate the assistant like you would do with the echo or Google assistance and ask it to play your desired music track, Game, Audiobook or just control your smart devices. The right earbud also allows you to answer and end incoming phone calls with a double tap. The phone calls were clear on both ends so the microphones work well. The left ear bud with a single tap allows you to switch between ambient sound and noise cancelling, if you single tap and hold the left earbud it will switch to ambient sound which the microphones enhances the listening experience to have a conversation or perhaps to listen to that important Transport announcement. You can also activate a setting in the Sony headphones connect app which when you speak it will pause the music and go to ambient sound, but if you are a person who talks to themselves or perhaps sings along to music you may wanna leave this setting turned off. You can also customise the different functions of each earbud in the app. The app is informative as it tells you the battery percentage of each earbud and also the battery percentage of the charging case, it also did send me a notification to tell me the charging case needs to be charged. The app allows you to set a specific equaliser or choose your own setting, Which suits your hearing preferences. The app also allows you to update the earbuds firmware which was easy and just required the phone to be nearby. The app does also have other features which will enhance your personal experience, Such as you can take photos of your ears whilst the information is sent back to Sony so they can analyse it and set the earbuds to suit your ear shape. The charging case is compact and has an LED light inside of the flip lid, Which gives you an indication of the earbuds battery charge. When charging the case it does have an LED light to indicate the battery level. The charging case can be charged by the included USPC cable or wirelessly charged. Now to the most important part, Which is the listening experience. The highs, mids and vocals are all very clear, whilst the base is punchy and deep but it is all very well balanced and makes an enjoyable listening experience. The app allows you to set the EQ to your personal listening preference, which I adjusted to a specific song and after several plays of that track and adjustments they was set perfectly for my enjoyable listening experience. The noise cancelling works well and lets you submerse yourself into the music. Overall good battery life with noise cancellation turned on, a compact charging case and good noise cancelling with an enjoyable well-balanced music listening experience. I hope you have found my review helpful.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe Sony WF-1000XM4 true wireless earbuds are excellent, as you’d expect from a brand such as Sony. As it is typical of their products, the technical aspects of these wireless earbuds are top-notch.
Starting with the design which is unique and understated. The design also results in a better fit, which is crucial. The earbuds fit snug on each ear and are secure & comfortable at the same time. I have used them in different situations and each time they stayed put. The different sized earbud tips offer extra choice and flexibility.
Speaking of the earbud tips, they can be used with the app to ensure the best fit and sound quality, which I thought is really cool. The earbuds have really good active noise cancellation, which is supported by the ear tips as well. The sound quality is fantastic on these earbuds. Sound when listening to music is rich whereas the voice quality during calls is crystal clear, thanks to the innovative driver technology. The app offers lots of customisation options for adjusting the sound without compromising on quality.
Battery life is also impressive on these. On a full charge with noise cancelling on, the earbuds offer up to 7 hours realistically, with the charging case providing a further 16 hours. With noise-cancelling off, it’s even longer — up to 10 hours of real-time power on a full charge, with a further 3x charges from the charging case, for up to 36 hours of playtime. In the real world, the numbers are close to this which is reassuring.
There are lots of other cool features and functions, such as sound upscaling, IPX4 water resistance, Fast Pair, Swift Pair, Qi Wireless Charging & Power Share with compatible devices, Speak-to-Chat, Voice Control, and plastic-free packaging!
Having used them for a few weeks, I have been very impressed with these earbuds. They are high-quality with uncompromising sound and suitable to use effortlessly at home or out & about. Although they are pricier than other brands, you get a lot for your money and are definitely worth it!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe first thing that struck me upon receiving these Sony headphones was the minimal, plastic-free packaging. It was so obvious, that I had to look it up and it turns out that Sony is using 99% recyclable material here: the packaging is made from a blend of wood, cardboard, etc, so very eco-friendly. What’s quite cool is that they’ve carried this aesthetic over to the grey version of the headphones and their charging case – they have that same textured, grey cardboard look to them.

The headphones themselves aren’t small, but they’re not huge either – they are about 10% smaller than the previous generation of these headphones, but much chunkier than, say, the Apple AirPods. Honestly, this isn’t a huge issue as they don’t look ridiculous in your ears or anything like that and the added size allows Sony to pack some very modern tech into them, which we’ll cover now!

Putting these into my ears the first time, I headed over to YouTube to listen to some music by Marshmello. I was incredibly impressed by the sound they produced. These Sony headphones have a really nice clarity to them that makes every single level distinguishable and crisp. The beats are all powerful and punchy. The authenticity of the music leaves you in no doubt you’re wearing an expensive, high-quality pair of headphones. I’m no audiophile, but I do appreciate good sounding music and I really do love how these sound.

The Active Noise Cancellation and Ambient modes both work well and are powered by Sony’s new integrated processor, V1. The ANC uses the mics to pickup and remove any background sounds you may have – I tested it next to the kettle and couldn’t hear it boiling at all. The ambient mode takes a few moments to kick in, but you can pause your music and the mic will pickup sound from your environment. Again, I tested it on the kettle and sound it amplified through the headphones. The main purpose for this is ambient mode is if you want to listen out for train announcements, traffic light beeps, feel someone may be trying to call for you, etc, without needing to remove your headphones. Switching between the two modes is easy – you simply tap the left ear bud.

I found the maximum volume to be more than enough for me – everything was very loud and not until you were at the absolute highest volume in an app and on the phone combined could you notice any kind of distortion; even then it was minor at the top of ranges.

Comfort is very good. Although they are big they don’t feel heavy and the size of them was perfect for my ears because the large circular part, which houses the tech, tucked into my ear and kept them in place. They have three different size tips, allowing you to get one that fits perfectly and seals the sound in as well. These tips are memory foam, which is a rare choice, but generally seen as better quality than rubber tips – the only downside if you do need to look after them better, i.e. be careful not to tear or overly compress them. All these points together meant I could cycle in them, walk in them, etc – I’m always a little cautious about running in ear buds such as these and they did fall out once whilst using them, but I think they’re in the ‘above average’ category for how little you do need to adjust them once in. If you’re looking to exercise regularly with many dynamic movements, then these may not be the best choice for you. However, if you’re planning mainly to use them on an exercise bike or the odd workout a couple times a week they’ll be fine.

Battery life is good, even by modern earbud standards and especially for those with ANC. I was easily able to get the stated 8 hours with ANC on. The charger allows two further charges from the case – so you get 24 hours in total, before needing to recharge them. This raises to 12 hours between charges and 36 hours in total with ANC turned off. This is really impressive for earbuds and such a small case as well. For most people, it’ll mean even with 2-3 hours of listening a day, maybe a 2 hour commute and hour gym session, you’ll only need to drop them onto a wireless charger or plug them in using the included USB-C cable about once a week or even less often than that.

In terms of durability, they seem very well built. I’ve dropped them from my ears and they’ve been absolutely fine. The IPX4 waterproof rating means they are going to be safe from sweat and light rain, but you won’t want to push this too far. It’s a bit of a shame they aren’t higher rated as many headphones these days are going beyond IPX4 to really give you that extra reassurance should they take a soaking.

So, overall, these are a really nice pair of headphones. All the latest tech is included, making them some of the best sounding earbud style headphones I have ever worn. For most people, these are going to be a fantastic choice of great-sounding, comfortable, durable headphones with impressive battery-life. The only people I’d suggest should weigh up other options are those who do a lot of dynamic exercise (skiing, rowing, Crossfit, breakdancing, etc) or those who may need more waterproofing. For everyone else, I’m sure they will impress!

Great sounding headphones with some impressive tech

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSony WF- 1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones: I’d read about the new Sony wireless earphones, apparently much research and overhaul has enabled the creation of this newly developed model that marry excellent sound quality with truly wireless technology, so I was eager to try them.

At the very expensive listed price the earphones raise much expectation and happily expectations are met. From the understated eco packaging (brave on a premium item such as these) to the extended battery life these earphones are top notch.

Obviously battery life is variable pending on how you use your product, but I’ve easily got the predicted 8hrs, even with noise cancelling and Bluetooth connections on. Turn them off and this time can be extended upto 12 hrs. The charging case provides an additional 12hrs so if all conditions are correct you can achieve the stated 24hr battery life. However for much of the time a 5 min quick charge provides a sufficient 1hr play life. You can charge the case using an appropriate Qi mat if you have one or via USB.

You only get 1 set each of ear tips in sml, med and large, it states each will provide years of use – time will tell. However the medium work well for me and are very comfortable, the new design incorporates polyurethane tips which apparently feel like foam and silicone, can’t really comment on that but they fit well and provide a good seal.

They achieve exceptional quality on sound reproduction and manages bass lines clearly and with great tone definition and excellent clarity for music across the board, they make other earphones sound laboured and stodgy.

There are a number of features which will be of great interest to many but for me the pure delivery and clarity of a wide range of music are key and these earphones certainly deliver.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersPositiv:

    Great overall package
Yesterday I managed to test out the soundpeats T2, tronsmart apollo, Tozo NC7 against the Sony and it’s clear that the Sony is better (the T2 was very close) and what sets these above the others is the overall functionality, sound, fit, tactile and effective touch controls, good APP
    Excellent user interface
I would say that they are value for money and I’m happy with them, possibly just ahead of the Sennheiser second generation TWS buds
One small niggle…..you can’t control all the functions directly from the buds!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis is my in-depth review of the Sony WF-1000XM4.

Mine are the white ones but the black ones look great.

Accessories – So the packaging is made of 99% recyclable materials which is great to see, a really short type a to c charge cable, tips in small to large with medium pre-fitted which are like a foam material, a lot of paperwork, charge case and the earbuds themselves. A small tag was covering the charge connectors in the case to stop them being charged in transit or storage.

Comfort – A very important one as the shells on the XM4 are quite large but I had no real issues but I have experienced better.

Bluetooth connection – I had no issue at all using AAC or LDAC for the best sound quality but you have to keep your phone closer to the earbuds for the best connection and stability.

Pairing – Very easy and straight forward and a simple guide has been shown how to do this in on a piece of the packaging in one of my pictures and it also shows how to scan to get the app but that can easily be found in the play store for example. A negative part is that it die snot support multi point pairing so it can’t be paired to two different devices for example like to a laptop and phone at the same time.

App – Extremely important to use as it not only gives full functionality to the earphones but it also performs firmware updates and I have already completed one update at the time of this review. The app can change equalizer presets, adaptive sound control, displays battery life of each earbud and the case, ambient sound control with variable levels, noise cancelling with automatic wind noise reduction, Bluetooth connection quality between stable (AAC) and sound quality (LDAC) codecs, 360 reality audio (not tested), DSEE, voice assistants, ability to change the touch sensor, optimal ear tip tester, notification language, enable/disable a mute function when they are removed from your ears and a tutorial.

Battery life – Highly variable for example if you run AAC with no extra functionality you will get 9 hours or more but if you use LDAC with ESEE and a sound mode on then not much more than 3 hours so in reality you can experience anywhere in this middle of this depending on your usage and codec used. The case can typically charge the units twice over depending on the sound modes used. The case supports wireless charging which I could not test. Around 90 minutes to fully charge the earbuds and up to 3 hours for the case.

Sound modes – Ambient sound mode and the noise cancelling both work very well as expected at this price point and nothing really to fault apart from a noise floor / hiss when the ambient noise setting is at maximum setting.

Microphones – The call quality and voice quality is very good but it’s not perfect but I would like to see at least a small improvement.

Usability – They have one touch button on each earphone and essentially the left one controls the sound modes, answer/end call, touch for quick ambient attention mode mode and the right one does basically everything else like play/pause, next track track, end calls etc. They can also be used individually but I only briefly tried this.

Sound – The standard setting on these is a balanced sound setting but the following presets can be selected : Bright, excited, Mellow, Relaxed, Vocal, Treble boost, Bass boost, Speech, Manual, Custom 1, Custom 2 then off. They all change the sound noticeably so you pick what suits you at the time or make your own or even turn it off. The driver used seems to be of a high quality and sounds very good with a tuning to suit most people and can be changed to how you see fit!

Conclusion – These are a very good pair of TWS earphones but the price point reflects this. I would have liked to have seen aptX, multi device pairing, slight microphone improvement and a large battery life of the case itself. All tested with my Poco F2 Pro.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNormally, Bluetooth earbuds are a minefield between sound quality being too ‘tinny’ or issues with the Bluetooth connection disrupting. These noise-cancelling headphones have an excellent sound that allows me to hear all the crisp notes i would miss from a cheaper quality pair, And the bass thunders and enhances my music experience dramatically.

The Bluetooth has shown no signs of issues with disruptions or disconnections, So it seems to be built quite solidly with a decent output range that’s reliable and smooth. The noise cancellation that is promised is on par with my best pair of earplugs, So it has passed the test for me.

I can’t find any negatives with these earphones, And even though the price is quite high, The quality of sound and the amount of longevity you get out of them is worth it in the long run.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI would describe these Sony headphones in 3 words, ‘A big Upgrade’ in both design and quality.
The last predecessor WF-1000XM3 done very well in the active noice cancellation feature but these Sony earbuds has managed to do better in that spec as well as have a better fit into the ears; they do stick out a bit but in design I would prefer these then the last gen that was big and did stick out the ears quite a lot and I wasn’t able to use those for the gym because they would fall off due to it being very loose. I was able to use these in the gym and I had not struggles with any loose feelings of the earbuds and they were perfect in the ears.
The sound quality was top notch with the active noice cancellation feature being on, the quality was loud and crisp and there was a lot of attention to details in terms of having good performance to high and mid tone and low tone was alright but could’ve been better.
In terms of battery life I was able to experience a bit less then 8hrs of use with active noice cancellation and total use was about 24hrs or less with ANC on. I would say these are quite the best performance headphones in terms how long I can use these for a single use and this is quite the first.
These are also IPX4 and I tested these out when I hit the gym and when I went out for a jog and I am a man that sweats a lot and I would say that after getting wet, I had no issues with sound or any other features.
Overall, I would say that I would pick these over the predecessor due to a new design upgrade and a better performing headphones overall.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersSound ist top.
Endlich Ruhe.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersPlease Note: I received this product in return for my unbiased opinion and impartial review.

I’m a big fan of a large variety of music, whilst simultaneously being a fan of not hearing anything else whilst I’m doing it. Noise cancelling earbuds might be brilliant, what do you think?

First up, the buds come in a nice presentation box, suitably minimalistic and soft touch. Nice. Opening it up, the box contained the charger box, different size earpieces to custom fit your lugs (so three sizes in total) instructions and a very short usb c cable. And I mean a couple of inches kinda short. Not a problem for me as I have a longer cable to hand. Before use, you can scan a QR code in the packaging with your phone and it takes you to your app store to download a customs sound setup. Very clever stuff, but a bit of overkill for me personally.

So, bluetooth connecting to my iPhone was a snap, like totally instant which I appreciate enormously. Diving in to Spotify, I cued up a variety of music to see how drums, bass, guitar & vocals were played. Firstly, the sound stage is very impressive, you really do feel as though you’re perfectly placed between the speakers. Bass and drums rendered well, with Supersonic by Oasis really showing a cutting edge to instruments and a snarl to vocals. Country Feedback by R.E.M. had a desperation to it which isn’t normally conveyed as well unless in live performance. Similarly excellent results from Kate Bush’s vocals and the epic scale of Pink Floyd’s playing on Dark Side Of The Moon album.

In operation, a tap of the left bud switches from Ambient, where noise from outside the earbuds can be heard at low-ish volumes, whereas a further tap changes over to noise cancelling. It works very well. I was sat in the lounge with my wife and youngest daughter who were talking loudly over the top of an even louder television. It didn’t overtake the music in my buds and my listening pleasure wasn’t Impacted upon at all.

I feel there is still a lot of functionality to discover with the buds, both in ear and also with the fine tuning of the app. I’m a user of Apple pods and whilst these are more expensive than those, they don’t have the excellent noise cancelling feature. You definitely get what you pay for here. Recommended.

    Terrific Noise Cancelling Performance

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI have a lot of time for Sony and these earbuds are quite special. Put them on and the first thing you notice is the exceptional bass: unlike most earbuds these go deep. The sound is also smooth and refined, making me want to keep listening.

A good start; but time for a closer look. The WF-1000XM4 succeeds the WF-1000XM3 as Sony’s top model of truly wireless earbuds (though audiophiles can spend a lot more on Sony’s wired in-ear headphones if they choose). There are quite a few changes, not least the inclusion of LDAC support, this being Sony’s high quality Bluetooth codec, claimed to be good enough for high resolution audio (better than CD quality), and more accurate too for CD quality music. It is a kind of equivalent to Qualcomm’s aptX with LDAC perhaps theoretically superior though aptX is more widely supported. The WF-1000XM4 also has Bluetooth 5.2 rather than 5.0, approximately 25% longer battery life, and optional wireless charging (QI) for the charging case, and new material for the ear tips or sleeves. The new design is also smaller: the earbuds are 10% smaller than the WF-1000XM3 and the case is 40% smaller.

Open the new eco-friendly packaging and you find the earbuds in their case, two additional sizes of ear sleeves, a charging cable (USB-A to USB-C), and a bundle of leaflets. The ear sleeves are the foam type, which is unusual but welcome: foam-type ear sleeves tend to form themselves to fit your ear, more than the more common silicon type.

A good fit is essential for good sound and the way it works with the WF-1000XM4 is that you push the earbud in and then twist it slightly to secure it. The companion app for Android or iOS has a set up guide which measures which of the three sizes of ear sleeve forms the best seal. These earbuds are above average for fit and I had no trouble getting an excellent seal. That said, they are not designed for sport and I found them not quite secure enough for running or exercising. That is, they never actually fell out but I found them working a little bit loose and I had to push them in again a few times. They are absolutely fine for regular use, whether seated or walking around.

Each earbud has essentially one button, the back of the earbud, which you can either tap or tap and hold to activate a function. I personally hate tapping the back of an earbud while wearing it as it makes an unpleasant thump though you can do this quite gently in this case, once you get the hang of it. This does mean though that there is limited functionality on the headphones. By default you get noise cancelling control on the left, and call/answer/play/pause on the right. You can change this with the app, for example to have volume control instead, but I stuck with the default.

Sony has its own Bluetooth audio processor, called Integrated Processor V1, an upgraded version of the QN1e chip in the WF-1000XM3. This is one reason why Sony’s earbuds are distinctive, since most other non-Apple earbuds seem to use a Qualcomm chipset. The noise cancelling is said to be improved, and I found it good though not the best. If I wear them and pause the music, I can still hear the hum from servers in my office, though much reduced. Some earbuds remove it almost completely. It’s still very worthwhile.

These earbuds also support ambient sound, also known as hear-through. This is great when you want to be aware of what is going on around you. Ambient sound works well, the main snag being wind noise which I noticed while out on my run. There is a setting to reduce this but it does not eliminate it. I didn’t find it too distracting though.

The app is called Headphones and lets you check the battery level and configure various features. There is a thing called Adaptive Sound Control which is described as “auto adjustment of the noise cancelling function by behaviour recognition.” I did try it but without much success. The headphones are meant to detect whether you are sitting, walking, running or on transport, and you can set things like “turn on ambient sound when walking.” You can also configure actions based on location, even configuring with a map, or have the app learn the “locations you frequent.” The main problem I found was that the music is interrupted when it switches, by default with a notification tone though you can switch this off. Its ability to detect actions automatically was also imperfect. I recommend turning this feature off.

There is another feature though, called Speak to chat, which I find quite useful. Essentially, if you start talking the music automatically pauses and ambient mode engages. Nice. Another handy feature is called Quick Attention: press and hold the left earbud to turn on ambient mode and lower the music volume temporarily.

The app also has an equalizer which might well be useful depending on preference.

I tested the earbuds with several devices: a PC, a Sony hi-res Walkman, an iPad, and an Android phone. Pairing was very easy, and the app connected to the earbuds easily enough. I upgraded the firmware through the app which took ages but worked. LDAC only worked with the Sony player, and even there I had to enable it specifically by setting “best sound quality” for Bluetooth. The app shows what codec is in use.

I tried using the earbuds for conferencing and found the voice quality acceptable but relatively poor. The main reason to get the WF-1000XM4 is for music; if you want a good all-round communication device look elsewhere.

What about the sound quality? This is what matters most to me, and as mentioned above, the bass is amazingly deep and the sound overall smooth and enjoyable. It is not the most analytical sound; not a bad thing but worth noting. One album I always play when testing audio is Miles Davis, Kind of Blue. I listen to whether you can easily follow the bass playing and hear the notes. In this case the deep bass makes the sound well balanced though there is just a little softness to the bass reproduction. Taylor Swift’s song Style benefited from the bass depth though it was almost overwhelming; you might want to tone it down slightly in the equalization. Vocals sound clear and with good presence. Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers is superb on these; I think Reggae fans will be very happy with the balance of the sound. A Beethoven symphony showed me again how good these earbuds are at reproducing the scale of the music.

Overall I do like these earbuds a lot. They are not quite 5 stars for me, because I don’t find them ideal for running, and the disappointing call quality. The sound reproduction is very good though not quite the best I’ve heard. On the plus side, I love the deep bass, the smooth enjoyable sound, and the elegant Sony design.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese are my first Sony in ears (I mean ever, not just wireless or TWS), I have a pair of the WH-CH700N which are the budget range ANC, which are ok and a pair of the big round MDR-XB950N1 which I love.

These little TWS WF-1000XM4 are quite far removed from those but have the Sony app support (in my opinion one of the best headphone companion apps there is) and are packed with features, not just the ANC.

    Comfort / fit

They come with three pairs of foam tips, I was quite dismayed with this. I’ve tried foam tips in the past and been underwhelmed by them, I would at least have preferred the option of gel or foam. Sony know what they’re doing her though and trying them all (largest were best fit) I managed to get a very secure, easy fit. In fact, so good was the fit, other than hearing music I barely knew I had them in. I had them in one day for five hours non-stop and they caused no discomfort whatsoever. I do still gave a concern over how long they will last however, I expect foam to degrade more readily than the standard ‘gel’.

    Sound

The default is perfectly reasonable sound, very well balanced, not quite monitor flat, a little bit of bass, very pleasant. Get in the app though and this is where it comes alive. Double customisable! If you just want to boost (or remove) a bit of bass you can just adjust the clear bass slider, if you want to tinker more there is a full EQ and presets to play with, there’s virtually no way you can’t get a sound you’re happy with.

    ANC

Sony blurb that this is industry leading ANC – now my two over ear pairs are the more ‘budget’ end and the ANC is merely average (it’s the quality and sound customisation that make those) – these though are really very good. Without music playing, the outside world is dampened to a hush, play music at about 50% volume and virtually everything is gone, save for a loud vehicle belting past. There is also a wind filter option for when the wind interferes with the ANC, it’s been quite windy for days here and without that on I have experienced absolutely no wind noise coming through the ANC mics at all.

    Talk to chat

Oh this! It’s great! So you have the normal ‘surround’ option whereby tapping will reverse the ANC effectively letting the outside noise in. Well this works in a similar fashion, except you just talk, it lowers the music volume and lets in the outside world. Stop talking and it goes back to music and ANC – you can set how many seconds before it does this, and how much outside to let in. Superb.

    Battery

Sony claim 8 hours with ANC on, pretty bold. I actually got (at about 60% volume) just over 8 and a half hours (5 hours of these were constant) on one charge, the case gives another 2 full charges. The case is understated, not the smallest out there but not huge and bulky either and charges via USB C.

    Controls

Touch controls are always at least a bit iffy, these have had the odd not recognising the occasional tap but in general are very responsive. Certainly the best I’ve come across, around about a 90% accuracy rating. The left bud controls ANC and associated functions, the right bud controls playback. All quite simple and effective.

    Other things

The box and all leaflets are fully recyclable which is nice, there are plenty more other customisation options. You can set the buds to go off after a specified time of your choosing if they are not being used, you can set them to auto pause when taking them out, you can change controls and other little bits within the app.

Quick summary – these are excellent all round. My initial misgiving around foam tips notwithstanding Sony have knocked it out of the park.

Do exactly what they say they will very well

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWhat follows is a review in two parts. First is the original review, completed after I’d received the earbuds, and at the end I’ve made additional comments and explained why I then amended the star rating.

    ————-

The first thing you notice when you get the new Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds is that outwardly Sony don’t appear to have gone overboard with the packaging. They even make a point of telling you that everything is recycled, and I for one welcome this. Not because I’m a Green Warrior but because I’m fed up of feeling hesitant every time I throw a huge, attractive thick cardboard box in the bin. But you can’t keep them all, can you? This one, I think I could. It’s small, not much bigger than the product itself, and beautifully constructed. I think it’s called “paper engineering” and other manufacturers should take note.

Remove the charging case and you have two choices – either plug in via the USB-C socket, or drop it onto a wireless charging plate. The latter would be my choice, I’ve got one upstairs and one downstairs because they’re so useful, but either way this is how it should be these days and it’s good to see the back of the horrible micro-USB plug.

I sometimes think that you can tell how seriously a manufacturer takes its products, by the size of the instruction manual that they supply. I’ve owned many a set of wireless earbuds that came with nothing more than a single piece of paper containing a handful of badly captioned diagrams, whereas Sony on the other hand have gone to the trouble of making their guide available to download as a 139 page PDF file. Hopefully you’ll never need to consult it, and the regular paperwork will turn out be sufficient, but just knowing that such a detailed document exists should give you confidence.

    HOWEVER…

I paired the earbuds, was asked to install the Sony app, and once it was up and running I was immediately informed of a firmware update. My phone is an iPhone 12 Pro Max so I’d hoped everything would be quite speedy, but it seemed like the update was going to go on all day. It reached 51% and then I got a note saying that the update had failed, and as far as I can tell there was no reason for this. Nothing else was connected, no music was playing, there were no other bits of equipment nearby that might have interfered. So I had to start all over again, and once again it failed halfway for no obvious reason. Third time lucky? Yes, third time lucky (and I did nothing different, nor did I move my phone or switch anything off), but what a farce. The whole process took a freakishly long time to complete, and although I didn’t time it exactly there is a note on the app which states it will take around an hour – which presumably is when it all goes properly – and I do know I was waiting longer than that. All I can think is that the reason for the update – connectivity issues – is also the reason why the update took so long, which is ironic.

Next up – fitting the earbuds. Sony have apparently developed a new kind of eartip, or at least they’ve used a different material than previously, and although they look like regular foam they’re supposed to be stronger. I don’t know if it’s the eartips, or maybe the new shape of the earbuds – my son, who owns the previous model to these, says they look weird – but whatever the reason, these are horrific to wear. I have never owned a set of Sony wireless earbuds and I was genuinely excited to be offered the chance to review these. When they arrived my wife told our son (and I quote) “Don’t touch those. Your dad has built a shrine to them.” That’s how much I was looking forward to getting them. I can’t wear them, it’s as simple as that. I put them in for about fifteen minutes last night, and another five this morning, and my ears are still hurting. My review therefore is limited and was done far too quickly, but until I can find a set of replacement silicone eartips which fit in the charging case and which are comfortable (assuming such things exist) then this is as much as I can stand to do. I can’t overstate just how much these hurt my ears.

So, going back to the positives, they sound great. Everything is crystal clear, although I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I wasn’t hearing anything which would make me buy these over other (premium, but cheaper) earbuds. My current favourites, the ones I grab most nights when I go to work, would be the Jabra 85t. They sound equally good. For comfort I would suggest that the Jaybird Vista2 will take some beating, in fact I can’t wait to put those back in because they’re an entirely different level of comfort to these.

Then there’s the noise cancelling. If you need good noise cancelling then I doubt you will get better than this, as it’s truly remarkable how much sound they block out. I played some music through my laptop speakers and, sitting with it on my lap, I could barely hear it. Try them with the kind of sounds you’d normally expect them to work with, like traffic and household electrical equipment, and the noise virtually disappears altogether. Those sorts of results are never seen in cheaper products, but what use is amazing noise cancellation if you can’t bear to put the things in your ears? From the little use I gave them the touch controls also work flawlessly, with just a tap needed to operate the various functions.

To sum these up, I’d describe them as being five star earbuds, with one star comfort. Having read other reviews it gives me some relief to know that I’m not alone in coming to this conclusion, but I would have much preferred to be sat here now giving a thumbs up and telling anyone who reads this to go out and buy a set. In case anyone is interested, my ears are STILL hurting.

    ————–

SO…. that was a couple of days ago, and since then I’ve done a bit of hunting around on various review websites. What I’ve discovered is that the problem with comfort (lack of it) is pretty well documented and many reviewers blame the foam tips. One person gave the earbuds five stars despite acknowledging that he was barely able to wear them as delivered, which seems just plain wrong to me. What I did find out though, is that there is a partial solution available. The eartips from the previous model (WF-1000XM3) are made of silicone and 100% compatible, and fitting some of those can improve matters. I bought a packet (3rd party copies made by Tencloud) and they cost me 6.98 for seven pairs in various sizes and colours. I’ve fitted a set of clear tips and yes, they do help. I wouldn’t say that I feel as if I could wear them all day, but I managed to keep them in long enough to explore the app and listen to some more music. It may be that I need to try a smaller size, and I’ll experiment at some point (my ears still hurt!) but I’m beginning to think that it isn’t just the eartips which are causing the pain, I think it’s the body of the buds as well, which is just too big. Again, I don’t seem to be alone in coming to this conclusion.

The first thing I found is that the sound quality is improved greatly – and this is a personal preference – by adjusting the EQ from the default position to “Bright”. I have the exact same issue with Sony headphones, in that their standard sound signature is overly warm. Once adjusted I would definitely put these above all other earbuds I own as far as sound goes. Above the Jaybird Vista2 and above my beloved Jabra 85t.

Then there’s the noise cancelling. Unfortunately, removing the foam tips and putting silicone on risks losing some of that noise-free magic. It could be my imagination but it seems to me that the isolation is not as great, and of course should I go down a size it would only worsen. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still better than a lot of the competition, but where with the foam tips it was stunning, with silicone it’s only very good. Does that matter? To me, no, but if you’re paying a premium price for premium features, I’d expect to have everything performing at full capacity.

There is an option within the app to change which noise cancelling functions can be adjusted using the tap controls, and the default is to have just the “on” and hearthrough (ambient sound) functions available. I have changed mine so that it’s just “on” and “off”, because I never use the ambient option and most time I won’t need noise cancelling. Turning it off will save you some battery life, so it’s a good idea to do it any time you can. One tap and it’s back on if your surroundings change.

If battery life is a concern, I’d also adjust the setting where you can choose to prioritise either “connection stability” or “sound quality”. The first one will use what many would call lower quality audio in order to ensure that Bluetooth works to its maximum potential, the second will use allegedly higher quality audio at the risk of the connection dropping out. My experience over the last couple of years is that Bluetooth has improved now to the point where you shouldn’t need to worry about poor connectivity, and if you don’t mind taking a hit on battery life then feel free to go with that. At the same time I would put money on the fact that 99.9% of the population can’t tell the difference between various audio settings, and the 0.1% who claim they can are kidding themselves. My argument with these things has always been the same, which is that if you’re concerned with sound quality to such an extent then why are you listening to compressed music files via your mobile phone? And if you aren’t, if you’re sitting in your music studio with an MP3 player worth several thousand pounds (such things do exist), then why aren’t you using proper HiFi headphones? My point is, what needs to be remembered in all this is that these are earbuds intended for mobile use. They’re primarily a convenience tool, and if you want the very best in HiFi then there are more appropriate ways to listen to music.

Having said that, and having discovered the silicone tip trick, I’ve amended my rating to four stars from the original three. It’s quite likely that some people will get on fine with the earbuds straight out of the box, but that seems to depend on the shape of a persons ears. For everyone else it’s worth spending a few pounds on some replacement tips to see if they help, although that shouldn’t be necessary and I think Sony should have done the decent thing and included some in the box. Why they haven’t done so is, I suspect, because they would have had to admit that noise cancelling only operates at maximum strength when the foam tips are in place. When all is said and done, for those people who remove these earbuds from the box and get on with them straight away then they’re a fantastic product. For the rest of us, and I suspect that we’re far from being a small minority, they’re flawed and may require an additional financial outlay before they become usable (and at that point they may not be operating at their maximum potential). This is not how I imagined things would work out, and I’ve reluctantly dismantled my Sony shrine.

UPDATE three months later. I persevered, refitted the foam tips, and after a few days of pain (because I really wanted these to be my go-to buds) I finally managed to wear them for longer than half an hour. The noise cancelling really is superb. Whether you want to suffer for a week is up to you, or maybe you’ll just be lucky and they’ll fit straight away. What happened in that week, I don’t know, but I’ve got them in now and they’re fine.

Just as worrying however, was the fact that I was getting problems with the battery. One day I’d have full charge and then the next day they’d be flat. Case, earbuds, everything. A couple of instances later I noticed that despite the buds being in the case they were still connected to my iPhone 12 Pro Max. A fault with the phone? With the Sony buds? I don’t know, but I did a factory reset to the Sonys and reconnected, and since then all has been well.

In the end they’re a definite 4 star product, as long as you’re prepared for a bit of a “journey” as they say.

Sony... yesterday my life was filled with pain…UPDATED

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese are the best-sounding earbuds I’ve ever tested. Honestly.

In fact, they might even sound better than my favourite full-size headphones. I found myself lying on the sofa, eyes closed, totally immersed in my audio landscape. The sound is crystal clear and wonderfully enveloping.

Testing setup: I’m using the WF-1000XM4 earbuds with my OnePlus 7T smartphone, playing music via Spotify in Very High quality mode.

For me, the first-rate sound quality would be reason enough to spend 250 on these earbuds. But when you pair the WF-1000XM4’s sublime sounds with excellent noise-cancelling (and the associated Ambient Sound mode), it really seals the deal.

Most ANC implementations I’ve tried have been disappointing, but I genuinely think this superb effort from Sony shows what can be achieved when ANC technology is implemented well.

The touch-sensitive controls on each earbud are intuitive and easy to use. Plus you get a decent 8 hours of battery life before needing to pop the earbuds back in their case for a charge.

There are loads more cool features I could tell you about, but I’m going to end my review here

Just buy these. They’re so far ahead of other earbuds it’s not even funny.

    Sound: Phnomenal
    Batterie: Super
Work: Teams macht wieder richtig Spa, die geplante Nutzung als Work and Sparetime Kopfhrer funktioniert bestens!

    Excellenter Klang, tolles Bedienerlebnis

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe XM4 buds are the much anticipated upgrade from the XM3. And there are lots of upgrades, most notably the new Sony V1 audio processor. The XM3 buds were already a great product so I was really excited to get my hands on these.

Firstly, the design of the XM3 has been upgraded and the new buds look fantastic. They are apparently 10% smaller but come with a larger, circular touch panel in a lovely black matt finish. The styling is very classy with a nice gold ring doubling up as the ANC mic housing and gold Sony logo. They feel very sturdy and certainly aren’t as prominent as the XM3’s.

Sony have also decided to redesign the charging case. Again this is smaller than the XM3’s with a lovely compact design that fits and feels lovely in the hand. The matt finish is very luxurious being plastic free and made of a special blend of paper. Luxury and environmentally friendly!

It charges through USB-C and wirelessly, if you have the compatible Qi charging pad. Battery life is improved on the XM3 with eight hours of play with the bluetooth and noise-cancelling on. This compares favourably with all other rival buds. The case can then provide a further 16 hours of charge. If you do run down, 5 minutes of charging will provide you with 1 hour of play.

If you are using these buds for sports, they do have an IPX4 rating for water splashing or sweat! However, just a note of caution, I don’t know if its just my ear but I felt the seal wasn’t as good as it could be. During running I always had the feeling that they could come loose. In normal everyday use they are certainly a step up from the XM3.

The sound is fabulous, better than XM3. I was particularly impressed with the quality and clarity of Bass and low end frequencies. The overall sounds from these buds are balanced beautifully with clear tones, seriously impressive. The XM4’s support 360 Reality Audio, LDAC, AAC and SBC codes.

Sony has brought the WH-1000XM4’s adaptive noise cancelling technology to the WF-1000XM4’s and the result is outstanding, its as good as I’ve experienced.

The XM4 also features a ‘speak-to-chat’ function, allowing you to talk to someone whilst wearing them. This is activated by simply talking, as the buds recognise your voice, pausing the music. A nice feature, just remember to disable it if you want to sing along!

    Overall
The XM4’s are a stunning piece of work from Sony and a definite upgrade from the previous XM3’s.
    Highly recommended!

    Pros
    Great Battery Life
    Great Styling
    Execeptional Noise cancelling
    Beautiful Sound
    Smart controls
    Lots of features

    Cons
    Fit can be unstable

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThese earbuds are absolutely fantastic! Best sound IV ever heard from in ear buds. These little beauties can compete with expensive over ear headphones they’re that good. I own the airpods pro Ans these absolutely blow them out of the water on sound quality and match or surpass them on ANC call quality etc. If you own a newer Android phone you can enable LDAC codec a hi Res streamer. This improves on the sound again. I found that with this enables and tinkering around with the eq I got a better sound to my ears than my bowers and Wilkins pi7 which were the best sounding in ear buds IV ever heard until these. Somet get me wrong you need to adjust eq to get this.
However these are excellent out of the box. Comfortable, smaller than the older model. Much better shape, superb ANC and call quality. These earbuds can upscale lower endusic to make it sound better.
For me these are absolutely worth every penny….

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAgrablement surpris par ce nouveau Sony WF-1000XM4.
