We painted extra markers on it, using nail varnish, so it was easy to see not only the “in and out” setting, but also the “incoming only” and “lockdown” settings.
I think he looked on it as a challenge. We knew he had “form” as an escapologist – a previous foster carer mentioned that – but presumed that was via an inferior type of flap.
He got out a couple of times when it was set for “incoming only”, but I thought it was user error.
Then I watched him batting downwards with his paw on the dial until it came out, broken. This was last month.
Customer service at the company was great, and sent a new dial straight away. But I can’t help thinking that the dial should have been a little more resilient. While, of course, being intensely proud of him 🙂
1. Does it work and is it easy to install? It works brilliant and went in the same hole as the original catflap but I had one fixing screw hole to re-drill in my uPVC door panel.
2. Will it actually stop other cats getting in? Yes. Categorically, yes.
3. Can my cat get in fast enough if she’s being chased by another cat? The reason I bought this was because a neighbours cat was coming in and battering my cat, so I was worried if it chased her then would the flap unlatch quick enough to let her in without being caught. The answer is that she regularly comes pelting in full tilt without slowing down, so no problems.
One thing to be aware of is that it has a deeper “tunnel” on the outside to register the cat’s tag so it can be a bit of a stretch for smaller cats or if it’s higher up on the door.
Purchased item and booked cat in to the vets and got her micro chipped.
Our upvc back door has a fancy square panel in it so husband didn’t fancy messing it up…builder only charged us 10 quid and it took him about 45 mins to fit it. Looks great.
With lots of ham, cheese dreamies and encouragement (me on the floor holding the flap up and waving ham!!) after 2 days she would go out through it. But the noise it made when she goes near it and it unlocks made her flinch back away from it.
Then on day 4, with more ham and yet more dreamies, she came in by herself.
Two weeks later she’s got the hang of it. She still sometimes wants us to let her in but that’s cats for you… we are after all here to serve them!
Brilliant product. Highly recommend.
The older cat would not go near it, I think its the click when the catch opens. After 6 weeks he was going out through it and a week later he too was using it like a train tunnel.
Batteries are showing no signs of failure after four months.
We had the flap because the cats wake us up between 02:00 and 04:00 to go out. The flap cures that problem. Now they wake us up to tell us they are going out and when they come back in. Can’t win with cats.
I was concerned about the reports of the flap being a little small. I have watched them using it and found no evidence of it being too small. It looks small but we have a three-year-old and a one-year-old cat who have no problems at all.
The flap works well. It took very little time for my clever (except where roads are concerned) cat to grasp that he had to put his head in instead of pushing it open with his paw. I have no complaints about the flap itself, although its a tight fit for my largish but not huge tomcat. Just watch if you want it to keep some cats from going out, as it doesn’
Great piece of kit!
Had it installed in sealed unit double glazed French doors. You need the circular plate SureFlap Cat Flap Mounting Adaptor, White for this but not the extra tunnel SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Tunnel Extender in White – I bought both just in case as they were cheap. Got the local Double Glazing company to make us a new sealed unit with the hole precut. They installed the unit and put this catflap in for us in about 20 minutes. Once installed we put it on read mode and “persuaded” (i.e. held) each of the cats’ heads up to the reader from outside. It read their chips first time and since then there have been no issues with them getting in. No visits from any of the other local cats either! More than big enough to allow our rather large (not fat – just big – about 5 kg!) cat in.
The only issues we’ve had since were not realising the batteries were dead so the cats were coming in the bathroom window instead (our fault – there’s an indicator light) and a broken (by the cats!) selector switch which mean they could remove the switch and get out at night. I went on the Sureflap site, put in the serial number, ordered a new one (free) and it arrived the next day. So wishlist – put the indicator light on top so you can see it more clearly and make the selector switch more robust (although the replacement does seem stronger but time will tell).
Very impressed with this catflap and I would thoroughly recommend it.
As others have said, it’s worth programming it to your cat before fitting, as it’s a lot easier to coax the cat into the flap that way.
It was easy enough to fit, I cut the hole myself in our PVC door, using a drill and an electric jigsaw. Our door is thick PVC multi-locking point door, and I wasn’t actually sure what would be in the middle of it (seemed too thick to be plastic all the way through), I found inside it is foam insulation, fine to cut through as long as you don’t go too near the edges where the metal locking mechanism is.
The hole doesn’t need to be 100% exact as the outer casing will cover up a few millimetres error, although obviously not too much. I marked out the shape, and found that the hole I first cut was a little on the small side, but I was able to shave away in the right places until it just fitted.
It took a while to train our rescue kitten to use it as she had never encountered a cat flap before and is quite timid. The first few days we actually had to tape it open all the time, because she would not have gone through it if she had to push. Once she was happy going through it, and having the freedom to go outside, we gradually lowered it a bit each day, until she had to push it open herself. We weren’t sure at first whether she would understand that she needed to be in the right place for the microchip to registered and unlock, but she seems to have no problem with that part of it.
We’ve been using it for two years now and so far I’ve had to replace the batteries once, when I noticed the light flashing. I do get worried about it running out whilst we’re on holiday, but we only ever leave her unattended for a couple of days (with an automated feeder) and I think she would be okay during that time – if you are very worried, you could change the batteries before you go away.
Took two seconds to set up, and we haven’t had any issues with it, and it’s been installed for 7 months now.
I’m so glad too, as ever since we moved in, our cat has been bullied by another cat (also microchipped) who keeps trying to chase him into the house, and often claws at the cat flap but it won’t open at all for him, but it opens right away for our cat who comes bolting in running away, I was Impressed as I expected it to not respond to opening as fast but it does.
Very pleased and relieved for our cat, he feels safe inside the house because of it knowing the other cats can’t get to him.
One little thing I’ve just discovered……………… really wanted a flap that would stop my daughters cat escaping when she visited at Xmas so installed this one the wrong way round to do the job…. worked fine though I’ve now realised they do a “dual scan” model for an extra 20 which controls exit as well as coming in and I wouldn’t have had to mess around putting things in the wrong way. My fault for not researching it too well!!
I hummed and thought about purchasing this; would it work? Would he use it or would he even be suitable for training on it?
In the end I purchased and I’m hugely pleased! Installation was relatively simple ( if you’re ok with a drill and jigsaw) and setting the unit up for my cats microchip was done in seconds!
The flap itself has several settings: locked, out opening, in opening and both ways. So even if your cat can open the unit with their chip it can be fully locked to halt all in and out progress.
With careful usage of treats I trained merlin (my trusted lord and master) within 4 days and after just two weeks he is now more than happy to come and go as he pleases with no fuss whatsoever. Merl is a very large cat! Not fat! LARGE! He’s 6.7 kilo and long and well built, and though he can get through the flap easily, I doubt a larger cat would have such an easy time! For an average cat though the flap is perfect!
Quality of the product is second to none and I highly recommend it!
UPDATE: after nearly 2 years of daily use the locking knob on this unit snapped its internal clip. mean the unit could still be locked but if forced from outside the knob would just fall out and allow the flap to be opened. no huge problem but a problem none the less! BUT: a quick search of Sureflaps support pages shows the knob can be replaced; and guess what? i put in my detail;s, typed in the serial number and within 2 days had a new replacement locking knob FREE OF CHARGE!! after nearly 2 years of owning the product!! thats quality support!! cant recommend this enough!
The one suggestion I would make: get your cats scanned before installing. We didn’t and spent a week trying to get the cat through the flipping thing whilst it was in scan mode. Unfortunately, the neighbour’s cat got itself scanned in the process(!) so we had to wipe the thing and start again! Cats.
Now I just need to find a way to stop the Tom from spraying the outer skin of the house and all will be well.
Despite some worries over whether this would keep out the ginger intruder who’d been eating our ageing 17 yr old moggie’s food, we decided to go ahead and purchase this and replace our regular 4-way locking cat flap. Am very happy with it so far! It did take our cat a couple of weeks to learn to use it. He isn’t the brightest crayon in the pack and his far smarter brother passed away some time ago, am certain he’d have figured it out in a day. He learned to go out after about 3 days and to come in took him 2 weeks! Trouble is, he is a hesitant kitty so he’d reach the flap, it would click open, then he’d stop, the cat flap would re-lock after 2 seconds and then he couldn’t get in. However he appears to have gained confidence and exits and enters with ease now. So far, no intruder kitties and our old chap is happy again.
The reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because it is a tighter fit to get through. Fortunately our cat manages, he’s just 4.0 kg, but if you had a 5 kg cat I imagine it might be too small.
1. To mark the hole, you are supposed to draw around the aperture that doesn’t touch the door, resulting in an inaccurate and wobbly line. Then you have to cut 3mm outside that, so the line is a very poor guide. It would be helpful to include a card template the actual size of the hole. It could even be printed on the box.
2. Chucking three sets of different length screws into the pack isn’t an adequate way to make this fit a range of door thicknesses. I made sleeves for the screws by cutting the tops from rawl plugs to achieve a fit. They also haven’t considered what happens when you fit this to a moulded panel door so that the frame isn’t flush to the door all the way around. The area around the screw fixings should be reinforced.
So it’s four out of five. I wouldn’t waste my time here if I didn’t think it was still the best choice and hope that this might lead to further improvement. Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap
Programming for my two cats was simple – just press a button, put the cat near, and that’s it. Couldn’t be easier.
The only niggles are that one of my cats is long haired and there are small tufts of his hair at the top of the tunnel, so I guess the flap is catching him a bit, and it does make a bit more noise when they go in and out – but that could simply be demonstrating how solidly built it is.
This has AUTOMATIC EXIT if set for free acess of your chipped cat. So useless in my desire to keep my new, non-chipped, kitten indoors while allowing my adult cat full in and out access. It can only be set to let all out or none out. Took to page 17 of instruction book to find confirmation, with a rationale of not locking in an intruder who gets in behind the chipped cat. Doesn’t speak too confidently for it achieving the desired result of security from intruders/ pursuers either. But I suppose if there’s a full-on chase happening it’ll be fast. Anyway, I fitted the flap only to remove it again and return to my brother whom I’d borrowed it from. At least I didn’t waste money on buying one for my own use.
That said, the flap seems to work fine in its function per instruction book; we’ve got two in the family. My brother has a pretty big cat, who hates all cat flaps and still isn’t persuaded on using this one – but he does get through the seemingly quite small door fine.
I had reservations about this after hearing from some cat owners how it hadn’t worked for them in one way or another.
It seemed to be my only option to stop other cats from terrorising mine in their own home and more upsettingly one strange cat that repeatedly sprayed everywhere in doors. My two cats were getting very distressed.
I have a 10 year old cat and one who is 18 months.
As it was to replace an existing petsafe flap, it was very easy to install. Just a matter of drilling new holes for the screws.
The cat flap is very sensitive and read both my cats microchips straight away. I was happy to find that it activated even though my elder cat prefers to enter paw first as this was a previous concern.
The younger cat took no time in learning how to use it, but the elder cat took a few days before he was confident.
The sureflap is slightly smaller than the petsafe so I nearly considered the petsafe pet door but decided to try this first. My older cat is 6.5kg and manages to get through so I don’t need to change it.
It seems a bit over the top to say it, but it honestly has changed our lives. The cats are a lot happier; the bully cats seem to have moved on to someone else’s territory as I hardly see them and we can leave them to be fed by a neighbour in our home whilst I’m away instead of using a cattery as they are now safe from intruders.
Just what the cat doctor ordered. Our cats stay in the conservatory overnight, but we soon learned that at least one other neighbourhood cat was intruding and bullying our two and eating their food. Our cat flap system was the the type where your cats wear magnets on their collars. Our cats must have gone through half a dozen collars last year so in the end we resorted to simply taping the catch down. Unfortunately, this meant that any other cat can get in, especially at night when the cats are put away for the night. Our cats became timid, and hungry, ravenous in fact, permanently on the lookout for food.
Within 30 minutes the Sureflap was out of the box, the cats programmed and (perhaps by fluke) fitted straight into our existing cat flap hole. I know that the hole sizes being compatible may have been a complete fluke but the simplicity of programming the unit isn’t. So long as you use new batteries and have a few cat treats to hand, the programming process is a doddle. Coming from someone who often makes a mountain out of a molehill with these things, thats high praise indeed. 1 week in and so far, so good. The cats started using the flap straight away seemingly without any issues. They seem happier and less hungry and we have had no intruders – everyone’s happy. Finally, the price. I bought this when it was on a strong offer, but in hindsight, had I known it would work so well, be that simple to program and fit, I would have paid a higher price to get this product.
I did the same cleaning and checks on the old flap and now that works too! It seems these things get unhappy when they are dirty. Places to pay particular attention to are the inside of the tunnel especially opposite the sensors, the sensors themselves and the top draught excluder strip on the door which, as I found, can hold enough hair to stop the sensors from working correctly. It looked ok but once I got in there with an old toothbrush, there was hair there which seems to have been what caused the problem.
This is a good product but it does need removing from the door and cleaning thoroughly every so often to keep it working reliably.
Suggestions for improvement (just in case the designers read this) would be a smoother interior to the tunnel without so many contours. That would make it easier to clean. The reliability issues might be improved by substituting the velour draught excluding strip at the top of the door with a silicone or butyl alternative (like a tiny windscreen wiper blade) which would still keep the draught out but wouldn’t hold cat hair so easily to obstruct the sensors. Our cat has long hair and I found a surprising amount of it matted into the strip.
4 years ago I purchased this item and fitted it to the back door. It stopped uninvited cats from a free B&B event. Easy to install and programme. Installation does need somebody competent with a tape measure and hand tools. The cat flap still works well. It does need a regular clean, not forgetting the top of the entrance tunnel as that is where the “magic” happens and reads the moggies “chip”. I have found that the “manual lock” does get full of muck/hair etc. and gets very stiff to operate. I’ve stripped the unit a couple of times which again is relatively easy to do to clean it properly and regain the lock function which only gets used when its flea/worm pill/vet trip time! I’ve four active young cats and generally get through a set of batteries once a year. I would highly recommend this product but it is not “maintenance” free. I also have had issues where the delivery person has forced the mail through if we are out. The flap does not like this as the mail doesn’t wear a micro chip! I have put a label on it requesting not to use as a mail box. I trust this is of use to somebody contemplating this purchase, I would buy another if I needed to.
This is easy to clean and doesn’t let drafts come in.
The ability to set the flap so that the cat can get in, but then can’t get back out (at night for instance) is perfect. Would recommend and fit again.
Lots of review reading (mainly on here against other products) later and this was the choice – and I do not regret it.
The boys didn’t take long to get the hang of it – one is one of those curious nosy bulshy types I mentioned above – so much so that he does this hilarious Superman dive through it even time he goes out. Our other one is a little neurotic (the wife says sensible, but meh) and much more nervous reserved and careful so it took him a bit longer. The manual says tempt with ham/meat/etc – heck just rattle the cat treats on the other side of the door with it propped slightly open, he’ll soon get the jist. Mr Neurotic our end had a slow start but realised he had to man up if he didn’t want to miss out on the adventure outside.
Folks do say some folks get a bit scared by the clicking. Again if your cat is a bit sensitive this maybe the case at first but persevere. They do realise in the end that actually to come in that the click is a good thing and means they can come in.
I was a bit worried about the draft initally, and whilst there is a very small one despite the furry flap edges in the frame, it’s not that bad. That said my flap is installed 90 degrees from the direction of wind – the wind cannot hit it straight on and it does look like you can kinda see between the flap edge and furry insulation and the outside world, so this might be a problem for others.
The other thing to note (that doesn’t bother us due to the location) is it looks OK and not too bulky from the inside (which is the side you can see in the main picture here on Amazon), but some my find it pig ugly on the outside due to the surround over the sensors – it does stick out a good couple of inches. This is a practical element for the cat flap, but yeah, if the cat flap is in a prominent location and you want a discreet cat flap, again please consider carefully.
So far in the past 2.5 months the sensors haven’t become that blocked. Unlike the state of the rest of the cat flap, with its mud and leaves dragged in by the monsters, so whilst I’ve had to clean the cat flap, the sensors haven’t been affected. Range on the sensors is good and we’ve had no problems so far. I leave the cat flap set so that they can ALWAYS get in (even when locked in, just in case they do one day break out when they shouldn’t) and we’ve had some noses up against the flap trying to get in, but as expected, no unwanted visitors. The only way such an unwanted visitor can get in, is if (s)he tailgates your own cat in, and that isn’t going to happen unless they’re friends and your cat is trying to have an unauthorised party whilst you’re out (who needs teenagers?)
Lastly, our cats are not allowed out yet after dark. We’re both long day workers spread over the 7 days, so some days neither one of us in until a few hours after sunset. We get some help from the neighbours and family if we know we’re going to be late (don’t worry, they’re not neglected when we’re gone, they get plenty of visitors and love!), however I do wonder if I should’ve looked for a chip cat flap with timer. That’s not a limitation of this cat flap, this does more than I expected better tahn I expected – but if you are reading this, do consider when your cat(s) is allowed out, and if you’re around to lock ’em in.
For what I wanted tho, great cat flap and so far so good. If we do have a disaster I’ll update this, but I don’t think I’ll need to. Anyway, too much chat, hope this helps folks, I’ll shut up now.
I was slightly apprehensive when thinking about buying a microchip cat flap, some reviews for this style of cat flap were very bad saying that it didn’t pick up the cats microchip or you’d have to plug it in to work (very inconvenient!)
After reading reviews for a few different brands Sureflap seemed to have the most positive reviews, so I decided to try it out. I am really pleased with the product, it is really quick and easy to program your cats chip and it made no difference to the age of the cats microchip. I had one cat recently microchip and the other five years ago, both took around 2 seconds to sync with cat flap. The only difference with the microchip cat flap compared to an average cat flap is the outside has a small tunnel to assist with reading the chip, so it slightly juts out about an inch but nothing unsightly. My cats have been using it, one has taken to it straight away and the other is slowly getting to grips with the longer tunnel entrance; but as soon as they put their heads into the tunnels the lock clicks off straight away to let them enter.
The positives are that no other cats can get inside your home anymore, its easy to use and seems very robust. I highly recommend this product.
Below the line was my previous review of this but I ordered a new one, installed it, put fresh batteries in and it’s been working great. No battery issues at all with the replacement.
As the battery was the only issue, I have changed the review from 3 to 5 stars.
————————————-
I want to give it 5 stars but it’s the battery life that causes me issues, I have had to change the batteries every week and I am putting Duracell ones in. I have read that it must be kept clean so I have done that, but it has eaten batteries up from day one.
While I was away for a few days the batteries ran down and the cat got locked out for an entire day, luckily it was a nice warm day. I had a cat sitter visiting, she noticed that the cat was sat on the step meowing to get in and thought it strange, she had the sense to ring me and we worked out that the cat flap was not working because of the batteries running flat.
A missing feature is to be allowed to set the cat flap so it will open without the chip reader, because I couldn’t do this I actually took a hacksaw to the little plastic stopper so that it’s permanently open now, I cannot risk my cat getting locked out during the night in bad weather and I can’t afford to put 4 new batteries in each week.
It could be that I have a faulty one but there are a few reviews that mention the battery problem.
After moving house and having problems with a neighbour’s cat coming into the house and bullying ours, we initially bought a Staywell Petporte flap which I have reviewed separately but needless to say it was removed from the door and returned. I replaced it with the Sureflap which is cheaper, more sturdily built, doesn’t need mains power and is very easy to install – less than 10 mins into the existing hole. Once installed, registering the cat’s microchip would have been relatively easy had the cat not have been scared by the previous Petporte and so was reluctant to go near this one. However, a great feature is that you only have to press a button once and the reader will stay active until the cat next comes into range. It will then register and store the chip ID and lock the flap.
It has taken over three weeks for my cat to actually start using it without our involvement and he still tries to avoid it where possible. If you have problems, you will need to perservere and the flap will eventually be used!
So far, the flap has unlocked without fault every time and has successfully kept the neighbourhood bully and other freeloaders out of the house. I’ve put in some decent Duracell batteries and hopefully they will last as long as it says in the manual. Very impressed and would recommend this over the Petporte based on having had experience with both.
The flap comes up slightly smaller than a regular cat flap due to the microchip recognition mechanism which is an issue for even slightly larger cats so be aware. it is also noisier than a regular cat flap
One of my cats was able to use it immediately the other is a bit more sensitive and took some coaxing to use it but is ok now.
I also had to buy the adapter to cover the hole from my last cat flap which left a round hole, you will also need this to fit it into a glazed door
Good points. It really only does let your cat through
Good price
Quite easy to train your cat to go through
Bad points. Not Draft proof
Slightly small
Noisy in operation
I only gave it 3 stars because of the draft issue I feel as though Im sitting in a wind tunnel
SureFlap Cat Flap Mounting Adaptor, White
DRAUGHT UPDATE: I contacted Sureflap customer services who sent me an updated flap to replace the one in my door. This is much better, and only minimal draught when the wind is blowing directly on to it.
The flap was quite easy to fit although I did have to remove the whole unit to do so.
Sureflap customer support response was very prompt via email. If you have a problem just contact them. I have updated my star rating to reflect this.
Also I would think if your catdoor flap should get broken (i have had this happen with particularly brutish intruders in the past) the flap might be available as a spare part.
I was very dubious about spending this amount on a cap flat, but it has transformed our lives.
Our cat loves going out at night and returning very vocally between 5 and 6am. She woke me every morning early and I had to get up and let her in. I am sure that the neighbour’s were also disturbed. There is also a tom cat always trying to get in to eat her food.
Now, our cat can get in and out when she wants and I get a good nights sleep.
The cat flap arrived promptly. If you intend to install it in a wooden door, then it is worth having the right tools handy and buying four long life AA batteries in advance.
Very straightforward to install yourself , but ideally you really need a drill, two drill bits, an electric jigsaw, file and sandpaper. It took under an hour including reading all the instructions and having a cup of tea. There is a very comprehensive instruction guide.
What really impressed me was the fact that it automatically recognised the chip! I thought I would have to mess about trying to type it in, but as soon as the cat goes through, it memorises it for you and keeps out any intruders. Don’t do what I did. I was so pleased to get it fitted that I thought I had to push the cat through the first time, which is a bad idea. Instead read all the instructions, leave it in memory mode and perhaps encourage the cat through, by putting some food on the other side. We used this method to train and encourage our cat to get used to going both ways through the flap and now she is really confident anyway.
In summary, a marvellous device, which is smart, works very well, has changed our lives and is worth every penny.
Neither of my cats had used a cat flap before but they took to it like ducks to water. The microchip reader has worked flawlessly every time and the slight click it makes doesn’t bother them.
One of my cats is overweight (over 7kilos) and it’s quite a squeeze for him but as per vets advice – he is now on a diet!
Fitting it to the upvc door that has tapered patterns on the lower half of the door was fairly simple. I checked there was no steel inner lining to the door with a thin drill bit as I didn’t have any strong magnets. I drilled plenty of holes round the template marking of the cat flap and used my cheap jigsaw to slowly cut the hole out of the door, with a standard wood blade fitted. Taking my time with it I think it took me about 45 minutes to fit.
I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed anything on amazon before but I read a lot of reviews of this product before purchasing and I wanted to answer some of my pre-purchase concerns, incase it helps anyone else. I can highly recommend this product.
This flap works well. There is a local Tom who owns the neighbourhood and has got through all my previous attempts to block him, he is the best cat burglar for miles. But so far this flap has defeated him. There is a utube video showing a similar Tom picking the lock of this flap by clawing the flap towards him, a neat and quick trick if you know it, which our local Tom doesn’t (I have figured out a modification that prevents this if he ever does figure it out though). Why don’t Sureflap add a simple catch to stop this? My flap blocks a hole in the wall and can be removed for cleaning etc by releasing a simple catch; it does need occasional cleaning to remove cat hair and accumulated dirt. Training the flap was easy by simply putting each cat’s head in the flap’s entrance-way briefly. So five stars for now anyway, at least until the local Tom discovers how to pick his way in.
6 months on, and the local Tom has figured out how to claw the flap towards him. But aha! .. I have beaten him by reducing the gap around the flap by glueing in a half mm strip in the gap, so the gap is too small to get a claw into. It has worked for several months so far, despite his regular attempts.
1st time cat owner so 1st cat flap. I ordered it and hubby fitted it. Took less than 2 hours to fit (it was probably less than this but rough estimate).
I was expecting stress at fitting it and more stress to get cat to use it but seriously there was none!!
So so easy. Once hubby fitted it, you press the button and when cat sticks his head through it scans microchip. That’s it. Done. Cat is now recognised as only cat allowed to come in and out (it allows up to 36 cats to be scanned?!). Took about 24-36 hours for cat to get used to it. I did what was rcommended and put cat treats down and on cat flap and out the other side. Once she got used to going out it then took her a few more go’s to get used to coming back in. The flap does click which I think put the cat off at first but after 24-36 hours she got completely used to it and is in and out all the time now. Better than her jumping in and out of open windows! She now uses it all the time and it’s like we always had it. For the price at the beginning I thought it was expensive. Now that’s the cat flap is fitted and working and is sooo easy I think it’s a price worth paying. I would definately recommend it. I also like the fact as my cat is still a kitten, if she goes out but gets scared she runs back in through cat flap and no other cat can get through. As I said I definately recommend it.
One of the best purchases I have made in a very long time! Required to fit this in a glass door which unfortunately meant having a whole new glass panel with the right size hole cut into the glass before it was toughened. But even though it meant a new door and hiring a professional to fit it is still a brilliant buy.before this we would leave a window open (not only a bad idea for safety and insurance reasons…) and less than ideal in bad weather. Or we had to keep a constant eye on the door for cats wanting in. Not to mention getting up several times through the night to let cars out that were wailing ar the bedroom door! We also began having problems with a stray cat coming in. Anyway this flap has solved all our problems. No cat gets in except ours, and you can chose different lock settings if required (eg in allowed but not out). It is easy to set up scanning your cats chip. I did have a problem with battery life and when I called sureflap to complain they were really helpful and offered to send a new part. However she advises this happens commonly due to hair clogging in the top draught excluder. It looked clean on sight but sure enough when I wiped it with cotton buds loads of hair came out and its worked fine since. Only wish I’d known this sooner as it would gave saved a few packets of batteries while it was running through them at a faulty rate due to the fact! Cars are really happy now they come and go as they please and we get a peaceful nights sleep
Great product. This is battery operated and remembers up to 20 chips. I was having big issues with an unneutered Tom, he was picking on my neutered female, and spraying in my house, he was eating all of Tillys food, and raiding the treat packets, I came home one day to catnip and treat packets and treats and everything strewn across my floor, (an it was not Tilly because she doesn’t react to catnip) – so after reading the reviews and getting a little concerned about it being temperamental, I decided the best thing to do, would be to get one and put it in my upstairs door, that way Tilly could never get locked out if the cat flap didn’t work.
This worked a treat, it was easy to program, Tilly got used to the click in the first couple of hours, used plenty of treats and bribes to get her used to it, when Oreo came in, he couldn’t get through the flap. Exellent!
Oreo proceeded to move house, so I started leaving my upstairs door open. Then my mum started complaining about cats coming into her house and eating the food, so I have given her the flap, again it was easy to program, 2 of her cats used it straight away (even the cat who refuses to use cat flaps!?) – and her other cat, she used it after about a week, she is a little podgy (4.7kg!) and because the door is slightly smaller than a standard cat flap, I think she didn’t like the feeling of going through, she fits, but she touches all the sides. Well my mum couldn’t be happier, she doesn’t get the neighbour cats in anymore, and her cats food is lasting longer.
Like many, I purchased this as an upgrade to a manual cat flap that did nothing to stop our kittens being terrorised by an established moggie in our neighbourhood. The primary requirement was that it fitted the existing hole in the back door and so I looked first at the electronic version of the cat flap we already had. This well known brand has a version that requires plugin electric power and whilst I could perhaps have worked around that it is far from ideal when the cat flap is in a door that has frequent traffic. After much research though, it appeared that the rival had also had a recent design change making it unreliable – so I went for the Sureflap.
To save anyone else the time of going on this same journey, I heartily recommend it. Fitting into the existing hole was a doddle. The kittens (that had become too scared to use the cat flap much…) took to the replacement straight away, programming their chips took less time than fitting it and I am perfectly content with the reliability of battery power.
The manufacturer says that the flap is capable of opening fast enough to handle a cat running at speed. I am not so sure about that as there seems to be quite a delay between the cat’s head going into the tunnel and the lock opening but on the other hand our kittens (who had got into the habit of flying through the old cat flap when scared…) did take to this new flap immediately and speed of entry has never been a problem.
I’m so impressed with this cat flap! I ordered it on Friday night, p&p was 3.96 – and the parcel arrived Sunday afternoon. I’ve just fitted it myself – it was slightly too big to fit into my existing cat flap hole in my back door, but I made the hole a bit bigger with a junior hacksaw, drilled new holes for the screws and the whole thing was fitted within an hour. My cat was a bit tentative at first and sat outside meowing at me through the cat flap for a little while, but within about 30 mins she got used to the noise of the latch unlocking when she pops her head near it and she’s been in and out a few times already. The design is great – it’s much thicker and generally more robust looking than my old (non-microchip) cat flap, and it looks like it will stand up to some attacking without problems. I’m hoping the neighbour’s cat that has previously broken down my old (non-microchip) cat flap and left it in pieces across my kitchen floor will be beaten by this one. It was very easy to set up and programme in my own cat’s microchip too – I just put a cat biscuit in the tunnel and held it near her before I fitted it in the door – it worked perfectly. I would definitely recommend this product.
Wow, our cat Murphy is using this like it’s always been there, and I only installed it this afternoon. Setting it up with his microchip was a breeze. But why only 4 stars? Because the draught-proofing is virtually non-existent; there is a gap of around 1mm all around the flap. Fortunately ours is on the inner door of the porch, but a draughty porch so we’ll certainly feel it when the north wind blows. I really expected something better from a premier manufacturer, especially when in all other respects it is very well made.
EDIT: Sureflap were quick to respond to my initial review and have sent me a modified flap component with better draught-proofing. Fitting this will require the unit to be taken apart so I’ll report back when it’s fitted.
EDIT 2: Modified flap now added. Yes it’s definitely better down the sides but there are still gaping holes around the hinge. For us it’s not too much of a problem as ours is on an inner door but if you need to use this cat flap on an outside door prepare for serious draughts.
I wish these had being available when I had my last two cats, whose lives were blighted by visiting cats who ate their food and sprayed in the kitchen. As soon as I saw this I got one for my current cat who gets on with it just fine.
Pros – 1) very easy to fit in the existing hole for the old flap. I did have to drill new screw-holes but that was all. 2) Very easy to program. I just held the flap open and the cat stuck his head through to see what I was doing and bam! it was done. 3) looks very neat and tidy in my white pvcu door.
Cons – 1) The interior of the hole is a bit smaller than the standard flap. My cat is quite big (about 5kgs). He can manage it – sometimes at great speed – but it does look a bit awkward. I would definitely consider the pet door if your cat is bigger than that. 2) It has a very strong magnet and the cat has to be quite determined to open it. I thought mine was just going to give up so I contacted manufacturer about this. They will provide weaker mechanism for you if you just ask. Fortunately my cat got to grips with it after a day or two so no need.
Overall It improves my cats life and my kitchen is no longer part of a territorial battle by the neighbourhood toms. A great buy.
A great product… when it is working.
The flap is great and it is surprising how quickly cats learn the click sound means they can pass through, if mine don’t hear the click they don’t even attempt to pass through now. It also helps them relax when other cats are being nosy around the flap, once they realised it doesn’t click to other cats they were a lot more relaxed (crazy how they learn things like that). I had one or two issues which can be easily avoided / solved by following the guidance below, be mindful that if you don’t pay attention to this detail your cat could be locked out of the house!
The customer services team at SureFlap are excellent, very helpful and talked through the issue I had and without quibble resolved everything, only dropping one star as the information below could be more prominently displayed in guide / box.
There are one or two things you need to mindful of when purchasing this cat flap, especially in brown.
1) Regularly check the silver sticker isn’t damaged and replace it if it becomes scratched, torn, loose etc… (you can get more by contacting the customer services team).
2) Make sure there isn’t a build up of fir / dirt around the draft excluder at the top as this will cause the sensors to permanently operate and drain the batteries.
3) Don’t use cheap batteries!, you will end up paying more constantly replacing them, use decent quality batteries and you will replace them less frequently.
We ‘adopted’ a 4 year old cat (Millie) from a family member last year.
I’ve always had a manual cat flap but haven’t been ‘owned’ by a cat for 5 years. When Millie arrived she used the old manual flap without problems but the neighbourhood cats had used our garden as a through route over the years and Millie became involved in territory battles, hissing & spitting at the flap and feeling stressed.
The final straw came when we found a cat helping itself to Millie’s food in our home.
I read the reviews and decided to purchase. It was slightly tricky to install as it is smaller than my previous cat flap (which was for a very, very large cat!) but I quickly found a way to position it and fill round the edges. We remembered that Millie was chipped and we were pleasantly surprised that we didn’t need to input any codes or numbers. I just put some of her favourite biscuits by the flap and then pressed the button to memorise her chip when moved in.
Millie used the flap as normal and she very quickly noticed that the other cats couldn’t get through the flap when they approached (she still told them off for trying of course!).
Now Millie’s back to her normal routine of eating, finding comfortable places to nap and enjoying her garden.
Highly recommended.
1) The manual lock (often forgotten about given the selling point of the chip-activated lock) is much stronger than eg those red plastic locks on Staywell cat flaps. My cat could easily ‘pop’ those manual locks open, or even knock the whole flap door off its hinges if he was desperate, so this new strong manual lock is an absolute godsend on eg Bonfire night etc when I need to keep him in.
2) My first Sureflap proved to be one of a faulty batch which resulted in grinding noises that got increasingly loud until cat just refused to use it. I contacted Sureflap direct, rather tha Amazon or the actual seller, and they sent me a new flap free of charge with virtually no questions asked. Just fantastically friendly and brilliant customer service!
3) Took the cat a couple of days to get used to the click of the chip-lock opening, but after that there was no stopping him. He frequently gets chased at top speed into my flat by other cats, but with this new flap he learned almost immediately – after one initially alarming but ultimately hilarious incident – to make himself ‘freeze’ for a split-second so that he didn’t just crash into the flap door before it could unlock. I can pretty much guarantee your own cat is only going to make this mistake once (if ever) and after that will be fine! And no cat has ever been quick enough to follow him through. Another godsend!
4) The actual size of the opening is a little smaller than other flaps, but my large-framed 6kg cat gets in and out no bother, although if he also had a fat tummy it might be a different story. The only slight difficulty he has is that the length of the tunnel means he really needs to stretch to get out the flap, although it’s fine for him coming in. I just consider this useful exercise for him, though!
I adore this cat flap. It’s definitely my best and favourite purchase of 2015.
We had a problem in that when we went away for a few days we found that the person left to look after our cat told us that they’d seen one of the local cats from another house sneaking in and eating our cat’s food and sleeping in our back porch.
A bit skeptical I ordered this cat flap and fitted it, not expecting miracles. I was very surprised to see how good it is. I simply removed our old cat flap, just fitted this in the same fittings. You can then set the “system” to sit and wait for your cat to pass through so they register themselves as one of the “key holders” by way of their chip implant. Being impatient after 5 minutes of our cat being suspicious of a new, funny smelling thing in the house I grabbed her and pushed her through it to get her registered!
I then sat just out of sight and waited for our unwelcome guest to attempt to gain entry. He was, not surprisingly, thwarted in his attempts. Looking a little dejected that the free food place was now closed permanently he skulked off. He hung around for about another 2 weeks still trying but eventually he seemed to grow tired of trying and I haven’t see him for several weeks now so he’s obviously in another house, perhaps another potential customer for this superb item.
We can now leave our cat in the porch, the kitchen and the adjoining dining room and she can come and go as she pleases as we know she’ll be safe and let in peace without having to put up with unwelcome guests. She’s happier and so are we.
If you need to restrict access to several cats as you too are having problems with unwelcome house guests stealing your own pet’s food or bothering them, I can’t recommend this item highly enough.
Bought this product as my 3rd cat flap in 6 months. Started off with a normal swing door (came with the house, but obviously useless at keeping neighbourhood kitties away). I then bought a magnetic cat flap which was a huge waste of money and simply didn’t work properly. I bought this flap because of the reviews and by this point I was fed up of chasing away other cats, and seeing my own cat guarding her food bowl with her life.
Its very easy to set up, and took about 10 minutes to install (if you already have a hole in the right-ish size). I was worried that my cat wouldn’t be able to push through it, she is small, about 7 months at the time of purchase, and she seems to have an issue with cat flaps in general. However, 10 minutes after installation and without encouragement, she managed to get out. She realised very quickly it requires a little bit more of a push than previous cat flaps, but if she can get the hang of it I’m sure most cats can.
Also looks neat, is tidier than other cat flaps, and the window is clear so my kitty can enjoy hours staring out of it working up the courage to brave the rain. I feel my cat flap worries are finally behind me…and kitty is happy and relaxed once more.
I had previously bought the Staywell/Petsafe version but that turned out to be a waste of time as it didn’t work. The benefits of this one are that it fitted in the existing hole in my UPVC door, I programmed in my cat instantly, a couple of months on it’s still working perfectly, and the added bonus that this one was cheaper. There are no fancy features, it lets your cat in while keeping others out and has a manual lock just like the old fashioned ones. That seems a bit flimsy and a determined cat might be able to get through, but I haven’t had any problems. My cat is kept in at night and he’s already used to that, so he doesn’t try to escape. I can go to bed after I’ve turned the switch knowing that he’ll come in and won’t go out again until I let him. My neighbour’s cat now sits outside with a look of despair instead of coming in and stealing food … unless I’ve left a window open, but then at least she can get out again!
I’m not sure what will happen when the batteries need replacing, they are supposed to last for a year. A friend of mine has this cat-flap and three cats, and she says her batteries do last 12 months. Hers developed problems with recognising the microchips but got excellent assistance from the manufacturers even though she’s had it for years.
We’ve had this cat flap now for over a year, so I now feel I can review it fairly. It is absolutely brilliant!
We previously had another manufacturers magnetic cat flap which proved to be complete rubbish that was unfit for purpose; the neighbours aggressive Tom figured out that if he simply pushed the flap hard enough, it would pop open. Bit of a design flaw there. 100’s of pounds worth of vets bills later and the admittedly somewhat more expensive Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap was starting to look very attractive!
Using the cat’s microchip as the ID also solved other problems that the magnetic cat flap had; no more picking up bits of rusty wire and nails on the collar. Plus no chance of the cat getting locked out if she’s forced to slip the collar due to a snag.
Since fitting the Sureflap Cat Flap, we have had no unwanted visitors and I’m pretty sure our now somewhat elderly and blind cat has never been locked out. She can come and go in the garden, safe in the knowledge that if the aggressive Tom comes along, she can safely retreat.
We had the vet check the microchip was in place and working prior to purchasing just in case. We’ve not had to replace the batteries yet after a year. I have been careful as instructed in the manual to ensure the proximity detector is clear of dirt or fluff, but I might change the batteries soon to pre-empt it anyway.
Overall, this unit solved a major problem for us and allowed our Cat (and us!) to be much more stress free. Would recommend!
Followup: The cat flap has now been in use for 21 months and I’ve not had one single problem with it, nor any intruders. When the red light flashes I change the batteries, they seem to last for months but I keep a spare set (4 x AA) just in case. I’m moving house and have bought another of these cat flaps to put in there. The only downside is that it will have to go in an outside wall (current one is in the back door), so I’ll have to fork out for probably 5 extenders, but it will be worth it in the long run – if my cat’s happy, I’m happy.
This is a good product, although we’ve found a couple of problems through use. Firstly, the selector control for locking the flap quickly becomes stiff, due to grit and dirt dropped by our cat jumping through. This unfortunately ended up with the selector locking into a closed position, which we had to force back to normal and have since stopped using this, instead preferring to place a large object such as a bin in front of the flap (Slightly annoying). The next problem, I encountered quite recently and was luckily in the room at the time. Our 7 month old kitten must have pushed his paw through the flap and then tried to retract it, but actually caught it between the ridge on the bottom edge of the flap (I think this is to prevent water entering??) and the flap itself. Effectively creating a Chinese finger trap, the harder he pulled, the tighter it gripped. I managed to free him, but worry about this now happening when we’re not home! Overall, a fantastic product and it’s convenient that it uses batteries, rather than being mains supplied.
I’ve waited 3 weeks to write a review – that’s because it’s taken my rather timid cat 3 weeks to pluck up the courage and use it! We had a ‘normal’ cat flap but a neighbour’s cat kept coming in and helping himself to our food and then bursting his way back.out again (we kept it locked so cat #1 could come in but not go out again as cat #2 is too young to go out yet)
Anyway, following a nightmare 14 hours when we discovered our kitten had escaped after the intruding cat had forced it’s way out one night we decided to invest in this one.
And I’m glad we did now cat #1 is using it! She still has to ask to go out the door as cat #2 still isn’t allowed out (if you want one that’s controlled by the chip for exit as well as entry you’ll need to pay a bit more for a dual activated one) but it’s good to know she can come in when she wants.
The intruding cat has given up trying to get in now – I was worried at first he’d try brute force to get in/out but it’s really sturdy and well made.
The only downside is the rather loud clunk it makes – I was beginning to think we’d made a mistake buying it as it frightened our cat but all came well in the end. Other than that it’s really good value for money and easy to set up – it arrived less than 36 hours after I ordered it too. Thumbs up from me 🙂
Excellent product. Easy to programme to read cats microchip, battery lasts a long time (9 months and counting) and easy to change the settings for in/out etc. Even though our kitten had never used a cat flap before she soon got the hang of it and wasn’t put off by the slight clicking sound caused by the lock opening/relocking. We have had no problems with other people’s cats getting in. Even when our cat runs for home being hotly pursued by other cats she is able to gain entry and the door relocks behind her before the other animal can follow her in.
Only two things worth mentioning:-
. flap is quite small so if you have a very large cat this may not be the product for you
. this flap does fit just fine into a thin surface like a UPVC door panel but as you are unable to cut the tunnel piece (this is where the microchip reader is) you are left with a longer piece of the tunnel sticking out on the outside of the door which you may not like the look of however I have found that it does actually provide additional protection from adverse weather and have grown that I no longer notice it.
Update: My flap developed a slight fault after 18 months in that the flexible butterfly piece on the back of the 4 way locking knob cracked. This meant the knob kept falling out and I could no longer control the locking function. I contacted Sureflap by email and within a couple of days received a new 4 way locking knob through the post. No fuss or hassle. Their customer service was perfect and from my experience not only do I recommend the product but the company as well. Excellent.
Had this product for almost a year now, our cats use it every day. I would definitely recommend to a friend.
The best thing about it is stopping other cats from entering your home. We live in a city where there are lots of other cats, I have seen at least 3 attempt to get in but this has obviously prevented them from doing so.
I was worried I would miss the red flashing light to say when the batteries were running low and the cats would get locked out, but it is actually very obvious.
A friend who is good with DIY fitted it, we went for a white one in a brown door. I was a little worried it would look strange but it just looks like a cat flap.
The worst thing about it isnt really a negative against the product, but it gets very dirty very easily and it’s not easy to clean. When I attempted to clean it the window became cloudy with scratches (perhaps because I used the wrong type of cloth) but the cats aren’t bothered.
The cats love it, it has definitely been worth the money for the few occasions it has kept other cats out and our cats feeling safe in their own home (especially when they were kittens and the bigger cats around where chasing them).
After trying to deter a tom cat from eating the cat food left out in the kitchen, the final straw was waking up to find him in my room, helping himself to a few snacks left out for my female cat (who was growling from the safety of the bed). She was a stray herself, regularly helping herself to the other house cat’s food and adopting me about a year ago, but enough was enough and I purchased this product a few days ago. Reviews were good and I’m not disappointed. After making a few adjustments to the existing hole, this was easy to fit. My cat is still a bit nervous of her adopted environment and so the new cat flap has resulted in a lot of rubber necking, and looking at me for reassurance. Reading her chip was easy: I let her out the door, pressed the memory button, and waved treats at her through the clear window. Although she stuck her head up to the panel (click), she wasn’t sure about it so waited for the main door to be opened. It might take some time to get her to use it, but we’ll get there. The other cat in the house isn’t chipped, so I’ve purchased the RFID tags, which should arrive in a day or two (she’s an elderly cat and doesn’t go out much).
Last night I could hear a few attempts at breaking in, which didn’t work…
I wish we’d bought this product first of all instead of buying a normal 40 catflap.
We’d had the old door a year and to be honest all was fine. Then, a few days ago a ginger Tom came in, marked his territory – oh great! and generally scared the living daylights out of our 1.5 year old cat Phoebe. The cat obviously came upstairs in the middle of the night as there was a terrible noise and a shadow went darting past my ankles, down the stairs, probably 5 steps at a time, which must have been the Tom. What a fright all round!
Pheebs stayed upstairs for most of the following day and when she came down reluctantly to feed she was black eyed, on red alert, staring out into the garden the rest of the time.
So the next day, having locked up the catflap that night, we purchased this cat door – it’s genius! I want to see this Tom trying to come in now that would be fantastic!
It’s an extremely clever but simple device that works like a dream – a button that goes up as she approaches and goes down when she’s safely in. Interesting to see it in action. Pheebs had no trouble – it’s also a clear door which is different so she can check what’s going on outside first.
Result – one relaxed cat plus one non hacked off family once again – all in the space of 2 days! Brilliant!
Oh if there’s one gripe, the door requires fitting on the outside therefore this means a slight worrying burgler issue, unscrewing the screws and possibly reaching in – they’re pretty canny so that needs to be addressed I would say. We weren’t put off!
Like I say, do it!
This replaced an extremely old cat flap whose plastic was literally crumbling. The problem was that old cat flap’s cutout was larger than most meaning that there would be a gap either at the top or bottom of where this new cat flap was to fit.
The answer was to use the mounting adapter ( SureFlap SureFlap Cat Flap Mounting Adaptor – Brown ) from SureFlap, which although targeted at round holes in glass doors works just as well for rectangular holes in normal doors. I just had to cut a 1cm piece off the bottom so it fitted flush against the straight edge of the door panel.
Fitting this cat flap (whether using the adapter or not) was just two (supplied) screws, simplicity itself; you do have to drill a couple of 6mm holes for the screws if the cat flap aperture isn’t wide enough to already allow this.
Registering the cat chip is really easy and took just a few seconds, just remember to do this BEFORE fitting it to the door, don’t ask me how I realised this. Poor little Benny, our cat, wondered why he was being coerced through a cat flap when he was already in doors.
Once fitted it looks very clean and smart; even the holes for the aforementioned screws have caps supplied.
Even if you don’t want to use it with a cat chip you can get a collar dongle instead, or just use it as a standard 4-way cat flap, especially useful whilst training your cat to use it.
I’m pleased with how quickly it installed, how neat it looks once fitted and Benny is nonchalant when using it but secretly likes it too.
Like many others before me I can only recommend it.
So easy to fit, my Staywell cat flap hole was slightly larger than the Sureflap, but I held it in place while my partner screwed it in and it holds very securely, no drafts or gaps on my UPVC door. I thought storing my cats chip would be tricky, but you just press a button in the battery space, to set the ‘read’ mode and a light starts flashing to indicate it is reading. Then the next cat to put their head in the opening has it’s chip code stored and the light will go off. They don’t even need to come through the door, which was handy as my nervy cat was a little spooked by the slight click noise as the lock opens for her, so wouldn’t come in but at least her chip was stored and I didn’t have to worry that our neighbouring cat burglars would beat her to it. To encourage my cat in I tried putting her food in her bowl right in front of the flap while she sat outside looking in, but as soon as she put her head forward to the door and heard the click, she backed off. I eventually left her too it and within about 10 minutes, hunger got the better of her and she came in. No problems since.
I bought this cat flap to enable my two cats to lead a safer, less stressful and better fed life as several other cats were coming through my regular flap and eating their food. At one point a neighbour’s cat was inside my house defending the flap so that my cats were forced to stay hungry out in the rain! I actually like the neighbour’s cat, but that didn’t seem fair!
Once I fitted the flap I set it for both my cats – it worked for one but not the other, so I contacted Customer Services and found them to be extremely friendly and helpful. First they sent me a kit, which arrived the next day, to test the range of the flap. The range was fine but my second cat could still not open the flap. I contacted Sureflap again and they suggested that the chip might have slipped inside the cat, and they offered me, free of charge, a replacement flap with an extended tunnel and enhanced range. This was delivered the next day, and is a great success. I now have two very happy cats using the flap, who can now relax safely inside the house while other cats try the door unsuccessfully.
Many thanks to Sureflap for their excellent customer services. I cannot fault the service I have received. I have no hesitation in recommending this product to others.
One of the best products ever! We’ve had 2 of these cat flaps, the first one back in the day was white since that was the only colour they use to do which so looked out of place in a brown UPVC door. I can’t remember why we eventually moved to a brown one but we did. Our cat flap was trouble free for 2+ years and recently started getting the dreaded battery drain. It was draining a set if batteries over just a weekend and I noticed that people on here to were suggesting they had a similar problem. I visited the sureflap website that suggested on the brown version it was imperative that the silver reflector in the front of the tunnel was clean and present. Additionally it stated about ensuring the top of the flap with the foam seal was also free from cat fur. Having been on the verge of buying another one I decided to take this advice. I cleaned the reflective sticker and removed about half a cat worth of fur and anxiously awaited the results. This small clean has rejuvenated the sureflap where the batteries where struggling to last a weekend they’ve since lasted 5 weeks and I’ve not had a low battery warning since. This was originally bought to stop house invaders and is a perfect deterrent! Recommended
I love this cat flap.
I didn’t want other cats coming in, and this uses the cat’s chip to know who’s allowed in and who is not. It’s the perfect feature and it works really, really well. It’s easy to set up and the cat learned to use this flap (his first) very quickly.
Here’s the bit that SureFlap had to help me with:
There are multiple options on what the cat can do, with a little dial to change that option. I use the dial so that during the day he can come and go, but at night he can come back in but then not get back out again. This worked fine, until he worked out how to cheat the dial and get out again. I have to say, he’s a pretty bright cat, since cheating the dial meant getting himself in a position while inside the house so that his chip triggered the ‘let me in’ function (when he was already in…). He then pushed down the indoor clip with his paw while using his claws to drag the door inward. Then he did a pincer movement of dropping his paw and pushing his head under so he could get out. Sometimes it took him more than one go, but after a couple of weeks he could get out even when locked in. But bright or not, he could get out when he wasn’t supposed to be able to do so.
I contacted SureFlap on Facebook and they sent me a modified indoor part, quickly and at no cost. It was a fiddly job to change the parts and I hope they might, in future, simply supply others with the complete ‘inside’ bit rather than the replacement parts. However, I can’t complain about their response: they acted quickly and it was only a few nights before I could lock him in again.
That said, we did have a 200 vets bill from an early morning escapade that resulted in a cat bite.
The manufacturer’s website says ‘Typical battery life is over 6 months, and in many cases, up to twelve months with normal use.’ However, the batteries needed replacing after 3 months and there after every 3-4 days (brand new duracells straight out of the box)! (see other similar reviews). Amazon responded brilliantly and offered a refund however there may be a fix.
I hope that the following is helpful to others: – SureFlap have noticed that when this occurs there is a build up of cat fur on the top draft excluder. This build up of cat fur along the draft excluder can obscure the sensors of the SureFlap – causing the SureFlap to be continuously in the “on” mode – thereby draining the batteries. They advise checking the top draft excluder and removal of any hair build up there – this should solve the problem.
We have done as they suggest and will see how it now fares.
My first microchip catflap , the original Petporte , lasted over 5 years , and was great , just wore out. Tried another one , similar to it and it was a nightmare to program as her chip had slipped and then broke after 3 days .So ordered this one,so easy to program it as the “sensor ” has a wider field and push one button , hold cat in outside hole , done . No pain or squealing , from me that is ! it is not as sophisticated as some with lots of different programs , but fortunately I don’t need them . The inside hole is quite small so will have to watch her weight which is a good thing , but this might affect someone with a large cat , hence 4 stars . love the fact there are no wires trailing to socket as it is battery operated . It’s good fun watching the cat who had been coming in through the broken flap bashing his head on the rigid door , he’s learning .
I have had the Sureflap installed for around three years now and I am so impressed I felt I needd to update my review. Since installimg the catflp I habe had reliable service thrpighout and my cats use it comfortably on a daily basis. We have never had the problem of other cats entering the house and have had complete.trouble free sercice from day one. Fantastic Product!
I have had a number of different cat flaps with various locking mechanisms but next doors tom cat has always managed to break in. On more than one occasion he has actually broken the flap door into two pieces. However, the sure flap has kept next doors tom cat out of the house whilst my three cats enter and exit with ease.
I had the flap installed in a door initially but when the door was replaced the flap was moved and placed into a wall. It has worked perfectly in both situations and my cats have had no difficulty in using it in either position.
Another of my neighbours also bought the same flap an he also appears delighted with it.
This flap is not cheap but it is worth every penny spent and I can recomend it to anyone wishing to keep out neighbourhood cats.
At last! Our cat had never got the hang of using our old cat flap and we had to have it permanently propped open. The house was full of other neighbourhood cats taking her food and spraying on every surface they could find. For some reason she seemed to be able to use this one with only a relatively short period of coaxing and encouragement. I don’t know why, perhaps the little click as the latch opens made her understand that she would be able to get in. Now the house is her territory and you can easily notice how much more relaxed and confident she is.
The Sureflap customer service is excellent. Our flap stopped working after a short time and it was very easy to get in touch with them. They suggested that the likely reason was that the own brand alkaline batteries I was using weren’t good enough and that I should try Energizer or Duracell – they even offered to send me a pack of Energizer! I put in a pack of Duracell Super and the flap works perfectly.
One general tip. You can use a collar with a chip with this product, but don’t. Get your cat micro chipped. A lot of cats die when they get their collars caught in trees and hedges.
I’ve installed it in a metal door – and the first cat flap supplied didn’t work. The manual admits that metal doors interfere with the scanner. I rang the company which was easy as they are based in Cambridge. My phone call went straight through to a member of staff who was knowledgeable and helpful and they immediately sent a replacement (metal model 1) – unfortunately this didn’t work either. Again they volunteered another solution (metal model 2) and posted it out straight away. They were very helpful and assured me “don’t worry we will find a way to make it work”. They sent each version out first so I could swap it with the installed version and didn’t have to live with a hole in the patio doors. This final version works really well and I can see why the company were so confident in their product. All of this additional support and supply of the upgraded product did not cost me a penny extra. Maybe to avoid the extra installation hassle the company should offer a choice of products and allow customers to opt for the metal door product from the outset – I would have paid extra to buy the metal door version if I had known.
In summary an excellent product backed by exceptional customer service, should there be any issues with the product.
Been using it for 7 months now and very pleased with it!
The installation process requires a certain amount of space all around the cat flap when cutting the glass, for the glass to remain solid, so we had to remove the entire glass panel in our french doors and replace it with a sandwich panel. Better intended for a wider glass panel.
– since this cat flap brand and model is very popular, every window professional knows how to install it
– easy to program, both our cats use it without any problem (even though they were terrified of it during the first week as if it was a guillotine 🙂
– I’ve seen other cat flaps at friends’ houses that were very drafty (maybe it was due to poor installation?) – this one keeps all the elements outside
– no stray cats have ever made their way inside the house (although don’t know if they tried)
– the batteries ran low after approximately 6 months of daily use, but we changed them before the flap actually stopped working, just in case
– red indicator began flashing to let us know the batteries were running low
– after changing batteries the programmed microchip codes stay in the flap memory, so no need to re-program
– in 7 months we haven’t experienced any single malfunction, very happy with it.
Hope this helps!
I have to say that I had quite a bit of trouble with this item to start with. Basically it all started with the fact that the cat didn’t want anything to do with the cat flap for about 3 weeks so I had to tape it open while I went to work so she could get used to going in and out (I only recently started working full-time and so we have never had a cat flap before). Once she had got used to that idea, I decided to “train” her to go through it whilst programming the cat flap. The problem was it wouldn’t work. After loads of attempts and various emails back and forth to Sureflap, they sent me something to test it with and I discovered that it wasn’t working because there was something up with my cat’s microchip! I took her to the vet only to discover it had failed and so she had to have a new one implanted.
I then started all over again trying to teach her to go through the sureflap cat flap, but she spent hours just looking at it and waiting for us to open the door!
It was only on Monday morning when I let her out, unlocked the cat flap, left her food in the house and went off to work that she finally went through the hole all by herself – hurrah! The food was all gone when we got home. She still thinks it is a devilish contraption and always sits at the door on the weekend to be let out the “human” way – but that’s just cats for you!
Otherwise, I think its a great item, I feel a lot happier knowing she can go out when she pleases and come in when shes cold, hungry or tired, or just being chased by the neighbourhood toms.
The Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap must be one of the best things I’ve ever purchased and I wish I’d ordered it long before I did. My younger cat sometimes goes away for long spells, with me waiting up half the night for him to come home. I don’t need to do that now, as he can let himself in and I’ve also noticed he doesn’t stay away as long. He was using the cat flap the next day after it was installed. His mother never goes away and I didn’t expect she would use the cat flap but she is now letting herself in, as she knows she is coming into a safe place, though still a bit scared to go out the flap into the unknown!
I had a new panel installed in my upvc back door to take the cat flap, as the original panel wasn’t suitable. It was worth every penny!
The cat flap is easy to use and has four settings, though I don’t need to change them at the moment. I put it in ‘learn mode’ so that the first time each cat put its head up to the door, it would pick up their microchip numbers. Be careful to do that just before your cat puts its head up to the flap, as my neighbour’s cat got there first.and I had to re-set it!
I have peace of mind knowing if I have to go out and my young cat hasn’t come home before I leave, he can get into the house. As I said, it’s the best thing since sliced bread!
A big male cat was coming in our house all the time, eating our female cats food and also scaring her so much she would hide upstairs and he always seemed to be in the house as soon as we put the food down. He would even wander in whilst we watched tv.
This Microchip Catflap is brilliant. we paid a local Vet to put a chip in our cat a few years ago in case she got lost. I installed the catflap, removed the battery cover (4 AA batteries required which last approx 6 months) and then pressed the sync button for a second. The lights then flashes for about 60 seconds and all you have to do is put your cats head near the tunnel and it syncs it with the chip in the Cat. It can store up to 32 chips.
There is also a dial with 4 settings , the default setting will stop the flap opening from the outside but will not bar any animal exiting. There other 3 settings let you set whether it allows exit only, entry only or locks both.
NB The picture shows the end which should be in your house, the other end should be on the outside and has a small tunnel, don’t get them the wrong way round. The small dot in the right hand corner of the picture is a small light which will flash when the batteries need changing or it is in learn mode. The battery cover is at the top of the flap, you can just about see it in the picture.
Following a spate of bullying and some very expensive vet bills – my two ageing cats were very stressed (and so was I never knowing what I would come home to!) I had heard that the magnetic flap can be accessed by other cats who also have them, as well as the fact that my cats have not worn collars for some years now! When I discovered this “microchip” cat flap on the internet I thought “just the job”!! As my feline friends have lived abroad for a few years, they were already microchipped – job done!
The item arrived within a couple of days and I didn’t even have to go to the post office to collect it – it was easy to swap with the old one (even for a DIY dunce like me). As they had got used to the cat flap being locked (to keep the intruder out) I had to help them out when “setting up” by putting their heads into the entrance to program the microchip reader and they also had to get over the “click” that is audible when it releases the flap, but now they’re coming and going quite happily (although a bit of a squeeze for the fat male!) and more importantly they seem more relaxed indoors knowing that the intruder can’t get in anymore.
All in all (as per other reviewers) very happy with the outcome. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone, even if the cost involved microchipping as well.
We rescued a cat a few months ago, so we don’t know her background, but she is quite nervy. She already knew how to use the cat flap, but, as it turned out, so did another local! My cat was so scared by the intruder she ran upstairs weeing. Obviously we had to do something about this, and the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap was the perfect answer! I know it is not cheap but it was worth every single penny to see my cat relaxed again. It fitted almost perfectly into the previous hole, and setting the ‘chip’ wasn’t too bad, although my cat being my cat refused to go through the flap for quite a while (well it seemed like it to me while sitting there with it held open and a treat the other side). In the end I pushed her through. It locks into place so quickly after your cat has gone through I feel confident that others couldn’t follow even if she were being chased. It has been in place a couple of months now and has worked a treat. I really cannot recommend this highly enough. I just wish I had got one years earlier as we also had this intruder problem with my previous cat.
Our first Catflap was a Staywell magnetic flap, which was a royal pain in the arse. The magnet was so strong that the cats would pick up nails, screws, tuna cans, even knives! This was obviously no good as we worried about them stabbing themselves in the neck while we were out at work. Add to that the fact that it worked for about a month before the mechanism broke, which meant that any old cat could come in, steal their food and scent our house. I have more complaints about it, but in short – DO NOT BUY THIS HEAP OF CRAP!
After much research, I decided that a microchip flap would suit ours and the cats needs, having trawled trough countless reviews between the PetPorte and Sureflap, we decided the Sureflap would be the best alternative to try out. The microchips registered very easily, the cats got used to the mechanism very quickly and seem much happier with the way it operates. We have had no intruders, and the cats can come and go as they please with no need for a collar, which is great as they are fluffy cats, which gives us maximum neck ruff enjoyment when they want a cuddle! So far I can’t fault it, the build quality is great, it is user friendly, looks nice and the cats love it, plus there are no wires or cumbersome awnings above the flap like with the PetPorte, plus it’s cheaper!
I have to say that I wasn’t keen on spending this amount of money on a cat-flap, plus the cost of having the cat chipped but I was woken at 3am the other night by my rather small, young tabby defending my honour against a very large ginger tom-cat – in my bedroom! The hissing, spitting ball of fur, all teeth and claws hurtling across my bed made me realise that 70 was not really that much to pay for peace of mind, and to sleep safely in my own bed.
I ordered the cat-flap Thursday tea-time, had the cat chipped Friday evening (she was none too impressed and I nearly lost a couple of fingers – but that’s another story), it arrived Saturday lunch-time, ahead of schedule and was up and running by Sunday morning. It fitted straight into the hole left by the previous flap and I barely had time to press the button before she was through it.
Some of the reviews mentioned cats being put off by the noise of it clicking, so I anticipated some teething problems while she got used to it but that hasn’t bothered her in the slightest. The only issue we’ve had is when she tried to bring a crisp packet through it – tried to poke it through with her paw and obviously her head wasn’t quite far enough in the tunnel to activate the release. She did get quite cross.
I would strongly recommend this to others. Our house is now a one-cat zone, and we don’t have to worry about her losing her magnet and locking herself out any more.
I have a very small cat, in a neighbourhood of big, aggressive cats. There has always been a problem with cats getting in. I used the infrared type of catflap for years. None of them ever lasted more than a year and spent so much money on collars, which always got water inside and got corroded.
I had given up because of the expense, and hoped my cat would learn to defend herself, which she did for a while. But recently the problem started again, and even worse than before. After I discovered that another cat had pee’d in the house, enough was enough.
The SureFlap microchip catflap was so easy to set up. I thought I might have trouble because even the vet seems to have difficulty scanning the cat’s microchip, but it works perfectly. It is much easier for the cat to use than the infrared flap, which often locked again by the time she was close enough to go through it.
I installed it in a glass door where I had a staywell flap previously – luckily it requires the same size hole cut in the glass, but this one needs a circular adapter to fit into glass. It was very easy to fit with the adapter.
The size of the tunnel is smaller than a staywell catflap, a large cat might struggle to get through, but my cat is small so it’s not a problem.
I cannot comment on whether it would last longer than infra-red types, but it seems more sturdily made so I am hopeful, and there are no collars to go wrong.
We have two cats and had an ordinary cat flap before which they both used. We got new neighbours who had two cats of their own and these started coming in our house everyday eating all of our cat’s food and sleeping on our landing, they spent more time in our house then there own so something had to be done.
The microchip cat flap was easy to install and fitted easily in the space vacated by the previous flap. It was also easier than I anticipated it would be to get it to store the microchip data of our two cats – I just put a couple of treats in the catflap whilst it was on the floor before we installed it in the door and they poked their heads through and it recorded the microchips straight away. One of our cats took to using the cat flap from day one but the other took a good few weeks before he would come in (although he was happy going out). Eventually after I was beginning to worry if he would ever use it he came in himself and has never looked back since.
The two cats from next door regularly try to get in and cannot understand why they can’t so it does it’s job perfectly.
The only drawback is that the batteries only lasted about six weeks so the advertised period of six months is very optimistic (although one of our cats does go in and out very frequently).
All in all it’s a great buy and would very much recommend it to anyone whose neighbours cats keep coming into their home
I would give this product more stars if I could. I have had the cat flap for about 1 month now and have had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. The main point I would like to put forward is that I was concerned that I would have to alter the hole for the cat flap. After taking the old flap out and trying out the new one I found it fitted perfectly, the only requirement was drilling new holes for the screws which wasn’t my favourite game.
My cat had been having some serious disagreements with the local cat fight club, and coming downstairs to another cat in the kitchen, with mine pouring blood and faeces in terror (and hiding on top of my oven) was the final straw. After a visit to the vet to treat numerous puncture wounds I got researching.
I chose the microchip cat flap because I really did not want other animals upsetting my cat as much as that again. She’s getting arrogant now though – I swear she taunts them through the door!
The main faff was getting my cat to stick her head in so I could scan her microchip – that was definitely a two person job. She was also a little hesitant about coming in through this new strange clicky thing that had replaced her normal flap. Now she understands the cat flap she sometimes pauses in the doorway to have a quick look around before coming through, only to discover the lock has been reapplied, but she seems to be fine to come in once she puts her head in the door again.
I have heard her having arguments with other cats since, but so far no other cat has been able to get in and she is a lot happier and calmer, thank you Sureflap for saving my sanity!
The product came with the circular support to be installed in my new double glazed door. The last few months have been a nightmare, fighting an aggressive cat decided to take home in my house, putting my cat in a lot of stress. It is winter and you can feel it when approaching your hand to the flap. So what you save with the double glazing is probably lost through the flap. I spent 1 hour trying to make it work without success. The firmware was not responding as expected. So I changed the batteries for brand new alkaline one, and it started to work fine. It seems that you definitely need excellent new batteries. Took 2 hours to get my cat initialize the system by going through, and now, after 5 days of use, I am satisfied with this flap. Bad cat stays out, and good cat can go in and out. Some people write that it looks robust, but I am not too impressed. It’s just all plastic, and only time will tell if it can last. Problem of course, is that there is no other similar product in competition.
For chip learning purposes, we found it easier to put the flap near the boy’s head whilst my husband held him, rather than trying to tempt him through the flap having fitted it to the door. He did find the clicking noise a little off putting at first, but soon got used to it and now happily comes and goes without any problems.
A great product, would definitely recommend. 4/5 stars – the 5th star was lost simply due to price.
NB if you have a particularly large/fat cat, they may find the aperture a bit of a squeeze.
We had a big siamese tomcat coming in the house that no matter what wouldnt give up pursuing our two cats. Bought this flap, set up was an absolute doddle (offered it up to both my cats to program it before fitting in the door). 10 minutes to remove my old cat flap and drill two small new holes to mount it in the door and hey presto, no more tomcat. Cats used it straight away, a little nervous at first as this flap has a short tunnel rather than just a door. It appears well made with quality plastics, a brush seal to keep draughts out and the chip latch mechanism which just pops down to let the cats in as their head enters the short tunnel. Only had it a couple of weeks but it has been flawless in operation and my only very small niggle is that the rotating catch (in only, out only, locked, normal) doesnt have any placard or marks to make the position obvious. I never use it as its always in normal so its really no bother.
Our cats are forever losing their collars so the magnetic type would be a nightmare to use. They dont even need collars for this one and I have to say I strongly recommend it to anyone that has a micro chipped cat and unwanted visitors.
Its not cheap, but then something that works so well straight out the box is worth a little bit extra. Says the batteries (4 x AA, not included so dont forget to get them!)last approx six months depending on use. Well we will see, been great so far.
We were getting through Staywell Infrared flaps at a rate of one every 18 months and wanted to try something else.
The Sureflap is the same aperture size as the Staywell flaps but the hole alignment for the fixing screws is different, making replacement a bit more fiddly than I had hoped. The overall size is much smaller and I think this makes the flap look nicer. Build quality appears much better.
Configuring the flap was simple, although it does involve getting your cat to go through the flap so a bit of food waiting on the opposite side may help.
Our cat took a couple of goes to get used to the flap. In particular, she found pushing the flap harder as the magnet appears stronger than on previous flaps. However, the design of the flap means that the lock only moves when the cat is in the tunnel. This reduces the amount of random unlocks we used to get when the cat was asleep by the door.
Overall, impressed so far. Reliability will be the key and we won’t know about that for a year or so.
I am very happy with this neat, easy to fit and effective cat flap. Like other reviewers we have had problems with another cat coming into the house and terrorizing our two. This has taken all that worry away. We now set it on either fully open or in only. With our old cat flap it has happened that a cat has got out via a window without us realizing and been stuck outside because our cat flap was locked. If we only use fully open or in only it prevents that happening.
The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that it is quite small. Our two cats are 16 months, they had a feral mother and were deserted, so probably because of their poor start in life they are small cats. They just manage to squeeze through the flap. I don’t see that a normal full grown cat could actually get through. Apart from this, a wonderful product which has improved the lives of our cats.
Excellent product! After a long battle with cat intruders, spraying in the house, spending a fortune on feeding the cat intuders, trying out magnetic catflaps, collars for the magnetic cat flap falling off, flea infestations due to other cats and my cat being a nervous wreck I was completely fed up but was also dubious about spending 70 on a cat flap. I have to say it is one of the best seventy pounds I have ever spent! My cat is now calm and safe in the knowledge that he doesn’t have to share his house with strangers. I don’t have to put up with the awful cat spray smell and I can also have an uninterrupted nights sleep without hearing cats fighting / growling / coming in and out and my cat jumping at every sound.
It was easy to flick to the short instructions. I used cat treats to encourage my cat to put his head in the tunnel for the cat flap to register his microchip. I then made sure it worked by passing his head through it again (he didn’t really like it but enjoyed the treats afterwards.) Once I was sure it had registered my cat’s microchip I fitted it easily. It just slotted into the space where my old cat flap was. It took my cat about 3 days to work it out. He found it easy to go out of the cat flap but a little longer to work out how to come in. I realised my cat opens the cat flap with his paws rather than his head but I persisted and kept calling himm from the inside. He worked it out soon enough and now comes in and out freely. Hurrah!
Not a single intruder ever since! Although I see them outside trying, poor things. Battle well and truly won! I would definitely recomment this product. I now have a calm and happy cat. He would recommend it too by the way. He just meowed to tell me.
Had the sureflap in for three weeks now, the fitting was easy as it was the same size of the Staywell previously fitted. Put a treat in the tunnel for the program learning and the cat stuck her head in to get the treat and bingo it was done.
We have a biggish cat and she manages to get in and out without problem although a bit of a squeeze, think she needs to go on a diet!
There is one point worth remembering is to keep the tunnel clean, especially the sensors as they are located at the top of the tunnel they can get dirty. I think if they did then the batteries would go flat as the chip sensor would be active all the time. My understanding is that the top sensors activate the chip reader when it sees a cat in the tunnel thus keeping the power requirement to a minimum.
so far so good and it is working as I want and keeps other cats out – hope it lasts!
Just a update as the unit stopped working after 13 months. I phoned Sureflap customer services and explained the problem and they couldn’t be more helpful! and no arguments promissed to replace it straight away. Now that’s service !
Hooray! Next door’s black Siamese tom has finally been banished from our house along with those lovely smells and stains. All previous collar actuated cat flaps had proved fruitless because our 2 girls had proved to be the Harry Houdinis of the cat world – somewhere in Manchester there must be a cat collar pile of epic proportions! This microchip cat flap is great and both cats worked it out very quickly. Two small teething problems – 1. the Sureflap product was smaller than our previous magnet activated version so we had to purchase the adaptor (which then worked fine). 2. the microchip on one of our cats had “migrated” so that it was closer to her tail than her head. After trying to teach her to reverse through the cat flap, in the end we gave up and had her chipped again – which the vet had no problem doing. All in all – the house is secure and the investment will soon be paid off when compared to what we were spending on carpet cleaner! Would definitely recommend.
I called up Sureflap and the first thing to say is that the customer service is really amazing. A real friendly person answers the phone promptly. They took me through a series of diagnostics and sent a testing kit which arrived the next day. The door tested out ok and they sent a replacement microchip. Anyhow, to cut a long story short the microchip and door were fine it was just having a problem learning Charlies mircrochip. We had been trying to get Charlie to come in from the outside first time around for the device to learn. But when we tried it the other way round and got him to go from the inside out first time around the device worked a treat and stored his chip in the memory. I’d recommend doing it this way around if you are having problems.
The door works great now and it is with some satisfaction that I now occasionally see the local cats Fergus, Eddy and especially Edwin sulking outside unable to get in.
PS As an added bonus I speculate that it might be harder for Charlie to bring in birds and mice through the Sureflap
PPS I rarely review items but felt the product and customer service were so good as to warrant good testimony
I purchased Sureflap about 6 months ago and it’s the best purchase I ever made. I had a Staywell magnetic flap previously and one of my cats (we have 3) would slowly make his way through the flap and it would be left open allowing other cats to follow him in. Also a neighbour’s cat learned how to ram himself against it and sure enough it opened up for him! I’ve lost count of how many magnets I have had to replace over the last couple of years which ended up costing me more than the original purchase of the flap. I saw a couple of cats on our garden who also wore the magnets on their collars so entering my house was a doddle for them! There’s nothing worse than entering your kitchen in the morning to an awful stink of cat pee. It would be all over our worktops and no matter what product we used to clean it up we still couldn’t get rid of the stench, and of course the renegade cats would do it in the same place over and over again. Also other cats entering my house terrorised my youngest cat Tessie and made her a nervous wreck. My daughter had a Sureflap installed at her house and had no such problems so I decided to give it a go. To my surprise there was no extra drilling to do as the Sureflap fitted over the opening made for the Staywell flap. It was very easy to programme the flap having only to set it to record mode as soon as each cat came near it. What a difference it has made! No more dreading the morning cleaning job and Tessie no longer sits looking at the flap in fear of an intruder eating her food and attacking her. Sureflap may be on the expensive side but it’s well worth it considering how much work it has saved me and my cats are happy being able to come and go as they please without looking over their shoulder. I would highly recommend you get yourself a Sureflap – you won’t regret it I promise!
Bought this cat flap to prevent the nocturnal visits of smelly, spraying non resident neighbourhood moggies. Well it worked in that sense, we have had no visitors since fitting. Had a standard size catmate flap fitted and with the help of a little silicon sealer was easily able to utilise the hole in the door panel for the Sureflap. Construction and quality are good, easy to read instructions and programming.
So why not 5 stars I hear you say? Firstly it has a smaller opening than the catmate, and I could see this being an issue if your cat is on the larger size. Second issue is more to do with the precious nature of our older (6 yrs) cat who is freaked by the ‘click’ sound that the flap makes when activated. After more than a month he has only just become comfortable with going out through the flap, but will not come in through the flap. Might be something to do with the fact that he needs to put his head further into the flaps ‘external extension’ when coming in and before the ‘click’ occurs. Two younger (1 yr) cats took to it no problem.
Bought this cat flap due to stray cats coming through existing model, could put up with them eating my cat’s food but when they started coming into the house when we were in bed and spraying around the house something had to be done as the smell was awful! Looked on the internet and found out that they now did cat flaps that worked by using your cat’s microchip. Have used cat flaps that use magnetic mice that attach to their collar in the past, but have found that the cats tend to loose the magnetic mice or collar so that they then can’t get in! The mice being magnetic also mean that the cats often come back with nails etc attached to them! and also replacing the mice is not that cheap.
Decided that this cat flap would be the best to try and don’t regret the money spent. Had to get my cat microchipped then husband fitted new cat flap put battery in it then set the catflap to learn mode. Then when your cat comes back into the house through the cat flap it registers your cat’s microchip and that is it! My cat is happy as there are no other cat’s coming into his house and we are extremely happy as our house is free of the awful smell. Would highly recommend.
The only thing I would say is that, like other buyers have found, this is only ‘ok’ for medium to large cats, my cat (approx 5.5 kg) loves going in and out as he chooses but if he got any chunkier it would certainly be a tight squeeze! Having it mounted in a french patio door also means it is quite high but your cat will adapt whatever…it’s just not as nice as having someone open the door for you every time! Our cat wasn’t sure about pushing his face against it, but now he uses his paw as well, he is happy.
Very good product, reasonably priced for what you get, do your research, this is definitely the best product of its kind out there. Totally worth it, don’t let other reviews put you off, if your cat has a normal microchip, there will be no problems. Just wish it was a little bigger that’s all….. thoroughly recommended.
I am sure that there are more cat owners who have cats with different dietary issues. I think that in the future Sureflap could make Microchip cat flap which is controlled both way, as I am sure they are cat owners who have more than one cat, and you not always want all our cats being able to go out of the house. I would love our Persian being able to do in and out of the house when she wants to, but not our Bengal due to his previous health issues, and I am happy to pay for such product. Hopefully Superflat will come up with more advance product soon.
I’m sure this is a fantastic product and really can’t mark it down just because my cat refuses to use it 2 weeks on. We have tried everything – Dreamies in the tunnel, tuna in the tunnel, waving her food bowl through it, waving a forkful of tuna through it, refusing to let her in through the door, leaving her out all day without any food, sellotaping the door open, and putting her through it ourselves (some say you should, some say you shouldn’t). Today she was sitting outside in the rain waiting to be let in rather than use it. I thought she might be worried about getting stuck because she is big and fluffy and it does look rather small but she knows now that she can pass through it. She’s had a sniff a couple of times but the catch clicking down really freaks her out. Am reluctant to put it on manual mode because she’ll get used to that then be spooked by the clicking again. Might have to give that a try though. Getting desperate now.
Apart from that…….it looks good. It’s easy to install as long as you get your measurements right! We hsd the hole in the glass cut too low forgetting to allow for the size of the adaptor as well, so had to adapt the adaptor. Getting her microchip read was (thankfully) done in a split second. It is expensive by the time you’ve had to get a new double glazed unit – if you are fitting it in glass, but would pay for itself if it removed the need for a 2 week stay in a cattery – which ours now won’t! We won’t give up and will continue to push her through it. Easy from the inside but not so from the outside because she runs off.
If you have a real scaredy cat like ours, be aware that they might not want to use it.
Was sick and tired of local Tom cats coming in to my house and spraying. My (neutered)female cat has been getting increasingly anxious because of it, with bouts of cystitis that the vet thinks could be due to stress. Obviously these Sureflaps are not cheap and I spent a long time reading reviews and wondering if this really was the answer to the problem! I have to say that Yes, it is! I am not the worlds best diy person, and really hoped that the new sureflap would fit the hole when I removed the old catflap. It fitted fine and even the screw holes lined up. Infact if it wasn’t for me having to spend hours scraping the old silicone sealent off the door, the job would have taken hardly any time. Once the batteries were in I put the sureflap into Learn mode and it registered my cat as soon as she put her head through. The click noise that is made when the latch releases to let her in scared her at first but she is now quite happy with it. And the best thing, NO MORE STINKING TOM CAT SMELL!!!
Edit – May 13
After now having this product installed for a year I stand by my original review. Have replaced the batteries twice so far, my cat is no longer stressed out and I no longer have to deal with spraying Tom cats. Brilliant buy!
I so so wish I could have given this 5 stars. It’s a fantastic idea, the reviews are good, and when I opened the box it looked really well made. I bought this to go in a new back door about to go up, and it was to keep our dachshund in (she has become an expert cat-flap-jumper), but allow the 3 cats to get in and out OK.
Unfortunately what the blurb on Amazon doesn’t tell you (but that the manual does) is that the flap does not discriminate between animals going out -any can get out (in automatic mode). But that it is only in auto mode that animals wearing a chip not learnt by the unit will be kept out, and the rest allowed in.
Sadly this would have left us with the potential to lock the dog out -and the whole idea was to keep her in unless we opened a door for her, and reduce the risk of her escaping (the cats always come home, we have no idea if she would).
Unfortunately I had to use Amazon’s (really efficient) returns system, and the flap is on its way back.
I could not give this high or low marks -it’s a great product but there should be a little more info here on Amazon.

UPDATE
The company got in touch with me after this review, and tell me that they are working on a flap that will do what I had originally wanted, and will let me know when it is available. I am very impressed with their approach to me, thus have increased the star rating to 4 -their customer service is indeed as good as other reviewers have said, so I will be going back to them when the right product is available for me.

According to the instructions you are supposed to scan the unit over the cat before installation, rather than get the cat to go through it as they will be nervous of a new door… In essence it never worked, and never really caused an issue (apart from the ugly canopy).
Now as anyone has bought any type of catflap, coding the cat to the door is always a battle, and as hard as we tried, the Pet Porte wouldn’t work – you get 30 seconds!!! Customer service is a joke, I notice they’ve now been bought out by staywell.
In the past week, we’ve had an issue with a tomcat coming in the house bullying our girls, so ordered the Sureflap yesterday. In true form, Amazon delivered today. The unit is far better built than the other one, slightly different dimensions (so not having gone for a glass bottom half on the new door was a great decision in hindsight, easy adjustment to fit) about 15 minutes.
It’s far superior in every way, build, lock mechanism, door, scanning function, the way it looks. Just press the top button covered nicely under the battery cover, it just flashes in ‘learn’ mode until the cats come back through (no time limit) – genius! Both coded, no hassle, and now expecting no unwanted guests in the house anymore.
As in the title, if your in the market for one of these, don’t buy the Pet Porte, in my opinion, it’s rubbish.
Now had this in for 15 months, it’s been faultless. Still on the same set of duracells, and for a pair of cats that using it like a revolving door, very impressive.
Firstly, it was just the right size to fit in the hole left by the last cat flap, which was a Cat Mate 4 Way Lock Cat Flap. So no more jigsaw action necessary. 2 screws and it was on, feeling solid and well made.
Then it was a simple case of switching on learning mode and letting the cats thru one after the other. It picked each of them up, no problems, and then continued to work well, unlocking within plenty of time to let the cat in.
Only negative points are : The magnet is a little strong which means the cats have to push a bit harder than usual to open the flap, but they’ll get used to it soon enough. Also, the click when the lock disengages upon detection is a little loud, might frighten some nervous cats and maybe put them off, but seems ok with our lot.
You can set it to a vanilla cat flap to let them get used to it if that helps.
It’s also a little bit smaller inside than other doors, so if you’ve got a 7+ kilo monster like our Bianca, it might struggle a bit getting through… she’s going to have to lose a little weight!
All in all a quality product, and if it continues to work as well I’d definitely recommend it!
First, it works brilliantly, just as described. It’s easy to install, easy to set up, and my curious cat got used to it quickly.
Not all was straightforward, as first of all I discovered my cat wasn’t microchipped – she was a rescue cat and I’m pretty sure that the vet I got her from had said they had chipped as well as neutered her. However we took her the same day to get it done (one-second job plus paperwork) and the flap was programmed the first time she went through. Like magic!
The worst part by far was getting the old cat flap off the door where it was firmly rusted in place! This one has just two screws, very easy. The old cat flap was a different shape and at first I squeezed this one in the too-tall and slightly too-narrow hole. Mistake, even though it went in, as the flap didn’t flap back down properly. Had to trim a bit off the side of the hole. Because this cat flap has a very thick frame it didn’t matter that the old hole was taller – the frame covers it up.
Most comments I get are ‘that’s a very small cat flap’. Maybe because it’s more square than rectangular it does look small, but take the advice of other reviewers on how big cats cope – mine is long and thin.
Highly recommended.
I have bought it long ago but I decide right now a review just in praise of their excellent customer service.
As I said I bought it long ago and the product is quite good, with a quality in line with the price tag. Not cheap but sturdy. After more than a year they came out with an improvement for the front flap (that Amazon does not sell but you can order straight from their site). A niftier closing, which means less cold coming in and a more resistant wheel. The original one was prone to be vandalised by the cat in an effort of opening. And my cat did! Note that if you bought the product recently there is no need to upgrade since newer version are already updated.
Anyway I have received the upgrade with the most explicative instructions I have ever seen to perform the upgrade. Which went very smooth and allowed me to have a better product.
Recently I had an issue with a part, and got in touch with their customer service. I was shipped a new part very quickly and again precise instructions.
If you are looking for something serious (and willing to pay for quality) this is a great solution for your pets (it is for our two).
I am delighted with this product: a doddle to set up and no more burglar cats!I was heartily fed up with feeding half the cats in the neighbourhood and one in particular that walked all over the kitchen worktops and ripped open packets. It meant that I felt anxious when I went away that unless my kind neighbout who feeds my cat was actually there when my cat was I did not know whether she’d had any of her food. And every morning I came down to every morsel having been eaten and the smell of cat spray. The Sureflap fits easily into the space where the old standard ‘Staywell’ catflap was, though you have to make 2 new screw holes as they aren’t in exactly the same place. Programming the Sureflap to accept my cat’s microchip could not have been easier or quicker. She was a bit anxious about using the flap to begin with – it is a bit smaller than the old one, but she’s not a big cat (though she has a very long and thick coat)so not a problem for her to get through. After a couple of goes where I helped her by holding the flap open for her to come in she is now going in and out completely unaided. This has taken less than 48 hours. Money well spent!
This isn’t a cheap investment so I was a bit concerned in case it didn’t do the job or it was difficult to fit. I needn’t have worried, though the preliminary exercise wasn’t quite so easy, but it did give us a laugh.
There are apparently rare occasions where certain microchips don’t work with the flap so you’re advised to check first and get your cat/s to register their chip before you fit the flap. This involves getting said cat/s to put head through the flap so that the chip (located in the neck) registers with the flap.
Brainwave! Entice said cats with biscuits on the other side of the flap. Worked well with 6 month old kitten, however Mum wasn’t going to put her head into anything she didn’t trust so she kept putting her paw through to get the buscuits – which defeated the object of the exercise. After half an hour of entertainment and an empty bag of buscuits I eventually succumbed to picking her up and pushing her head through – I have the scratches to prove it!
It took less than an hour to fit – including cutting out the hole in the door. It has 4 options so the cats can go out but not come in, come in but not got out, lock totally, or open totally. It is neat and pretty stylish for a cat flap. They now go as they please, but haven’t quite realised yet that they need to reverse the process to get back in. To be fair it is their first cat flap so give them time – bless their little cotton socks.
Update: 1 year on and it’s still working fine. They both use it, though for Mum the weather has to be pretty near biblical before she’ll use it to get back in the house. As stated in the FAQs the batteries have lasted 12 months and just been changed.
Initially I was hesitant abut spending so much money on a cat flap, and I was also concerned about whether my 11-year old cat’s microchip could be read.
However, the product works perfectly, does exactly what it says it does, and was incredibly easy to set up.
Unfortunately the back door was lined with metal but I fitted the mounting adaptor and haven’t had a single problem. The cat, who has historically had a lot of problems with cat flaps (I previously had magnetic ones and he struggled to operate them properly coming in, and occasionally got stuck after collecting bits of rusty metal on his magnet), did not take to it immediately. He knew what to do but was extremely suspicious – I got the impression he found the whole thing way too easy. But after a couple of days he really got into it and now he loves his new cat flap and no longer only goes out to use the ‘facilities’. For the first time in about 3 years he’s actually spending more time outside than in during the day.
If you’re torn between this cat flap and a magnetic one, let me help you out: had I known how fantastic this flap was, I’d have bought it years ago. I’ll never buy magnetic again.
We tried another brand of this type of catflap but it was so complex that we gave up but the Sureflap works faultlessly. Despite me being a a gadget freak I was totally confused by sub-menus and bleeps etc.
Additionally, the Sureflap runs for around 6 months on 4 AA batteries (other brands seem to require a mains adaptor and wire). The overall construction is also quite robust which is important as one of our two cats likes to try and force his way out when the flap is locked. It has the usual 4 way ability to allow cats in but not out and vice versa etc. One minor niggle is that you cannot have different settings for different cats e.g. the same settings have to be applied to all registered cats but that is understandable given the constraints of cost and complexity etc.
Another advantage of the flap is that it seems to deter the cats from bringing birds in (because the cat has to be close up to the door to trigger the latch), although, with the onset of spring this assertion has yet to be fully tested.
Overall, this catflap is unreservedly recommended especially against the competition.
