Solidly built fun game with large swords, 4 different colours to stick into the barrel. Has always popped up for us and can take the rough and tumble of kids. Can also be used to emulate the games played on Korean variety shows such as Running Man to help make decisions!
Easy game for my 4 year old granddaughter
Performance wise it’s good, although a little unstable with some pulls of the swords
All in all, a good quick game, using colour recognition and turn taking.
Great value toy game
My Granddaughter loved it especially when the pirate popped up when SHE won !!
It provided endless fun and kept her entertained for hours
Well worth the money
Brilliant game for my pre-schooler. He has a blast playing this. It teaches him to take turns, identify colours and he screams with excitement when the pirate pops!! Lots of fun.
I have great childhood memories of playing this game with family and friends, so was keen to purchase it for my child. It is exactly how I remember it, a robust and engaging game! Very simple instructions to follow and great for teaching children about turn-taking! It’s so much fun watching my daughter giggle when the pirate pops out, giving her a fright! Definitely recommended for some family fun with young children.
Playing this with my son was such nostalgia and we all absolutely loved it. He’s played this with all the grandparents and cousins and everyone loves it. It’s just great fun and can’t fault it at all. The dinosaur element is a fun addition for anyone who has dinosaur lovers.
I think it’s a little boring after a while – fun at first but I find it’s a bit tricky for younger kids to push the swords in in the slots lower down as it’s not clear when it’s fully pushed in or not.
Also think (as an adult) it’s a little morbid – my 5 y.o. daughter did ask why we’re pushing swords into the poor pirate, contrast with my 2 y.o daughter who wanted to put all the swords in as quickly as possible.
Once ol’ pirate has popped out a few times the novelty wears off. It’s already back in its box ready no doubt for a future resale 🙁
I had this game in its pirate form as a child. Used to love it. I went online to buy it for my daughter’s birthday and saw there was a Mario themed version . As she loves Mario, I thought it would have a little more meaning. Just as fun and all the better for the Mario twist.
I guess technically the toy comes in a box but that box should really be wrapped or something as this was a gift so if it had got damaged in transit I would have been mad. Luckily, it wasn’t and I wrapped it up and sent it to my nephew.
Remembered playing with this game when my children were young, so when my granddaughter wanted games for her birthday, I just had to get this. It’s really good quality and I’m happy with it and also the price was good value.
A great toy – and exactly as I remember growing up! 5 Stars as it will be great but I did jump a bit and bought for my two year old twins. Not suitable for that age – they are more interested in throwing the swords around – of which there are a lot and a lot to pick up! However, will be great when they are closer to three and able to understand it a bit more.
I didn’t buy this for a child. My dad has dementia and his carers play games with him, including this one. I bought him a lot of games including scrabble, ludo, snakes and ladders, draughts, but he loves this and will ask to play it. See who can pop the pirate first. Or if playing with more people, you can say whoever pops the pirate is out until you have a winner.
It is fun. I secretly enjoy playing it with him too, every now and then.
It’s great fun for the kids to see the pirate pop. I feel would have been more thrilling in reverse i.e if all knives were slotted into the barrel then each one takes turn to pull a knife out! Just a thought. But kids live it. They do rush to slot all knives quickly hence reverse would be more manageable
It’s pop up pirate, difficult to say more.
I’m sure you can get it in a larger size though.
It’s a proper branded product, the quality is really good, should last forever
I got this as something for the ‘elf on the shelf’ to play with the kids, so got one that could be delivered quickly, so was more expensive than what I would normally pay, and know I could get the exact same cheaper normally.
But as a product it’s really good
Pirate doesn’t always pop up , but it’s a good game when it works
Great value for money. Using it to teach my autistic son to take turns
Pop Up Pirate is great gift for a child. I brought it for mine as it was a toy I enjoyed when I was his age. However, the plastic is not solid so it is not particularly sturdy. Great nostalgic toy, just don’t expect a lot.
The toy is a great gift for any age. It’s fun an brings everyone together. No complicated set up or hard rules or instructions to follow
It was a Christmas present for my son, we had lots of fun playing, laughing a good deal as the Dino popping up made us jump every time.
Exactly what we expected. My 4yr old loves playing it.
Good, easy to use kids birthday present they loved i
We all had lots of fun with this game. So popular with the boys (and their Dad) that they took it home to Portugal with them.
Great retro game for grandkids and adults to play with each other. Really good fun. Makes a brilliant change from ipads.
Ordered to play with granddaughter who squeals with excitement. It’s a great game for all the family. Value for money.
My children had the pirate version of this when they were younger. Bought for my great nephew who is mad on dinosaurs – loves it, plays it frequently
Genuine product, not a cheap knock off. No functional defects, really fun game.
Nostagic game, enjoyed by all the family over Christmas. Only reason to not give 5 stars is that occasionally it didn’t work! We’d add all the swords but the pirate didn’t pop. Not the end of the world but worth noting as it happened a few times.
Otherwise lot of fun had with ages 3 to 60+
Easy to play, no instructions needed. Great family time game. My son loves it especially as he loves dinosaurs
Nice family card game where you steal loot from other players in the hope of collecting the most valuable treasure. All the cards have different values, lose points for stealing a crab which takes your own treasure.
This game is OK sometimes doesn’t want to work sometimes it does it’s a bit temperamental Feels really cheap Not sure why just doesn’t feel quite right it’s just doesn’t want to work properly with a very unsatisfied five-year-old at tha
My grandson enjoys playing with this toy. Lots of fun.
I bought this for us to play with at Christmas, mostly for my four year old granddaughter’s benefit. It’s perfect for playing with young children. It’s quite a short game and my granddaughter is delighted with the ’cause and effect’ element of it. Brightly coloured and well made. Good value for money.
My 3yr old grandson loves this game as he is mad on dinosaurs
Something not seen for a long time, got this to play on Christmas Day after dinner, great fun for 5 adults!
Good game kids have a lot of fun with it…
I bought this to use with the children I work with and they love i
Three year old loves this game! Recommend this product for all parents of little people. Good value as more expensive in the shops
Good fun in a kids game hours of fun with an element of duprise with every game.keeps you on your toes
Still lots of fun, my daughter is 3 and enjoys playing with it.
We purchased this toy as our 2 year old grandson loves pirates (he readily watches a current children’s tv programme about pirates) and we knew he could put the swords into the holes and enjoy it when the pirate popped out of the top. The toy is sturdy, it is an ‘old time’ favourite, it was well packaged and delivered on time.
Bought as a christmas present and it looked like she had lots of fun!
This game can also be use to improve childrens listening skills, colour knowledge, patience and turn taking bu naming the colour sward that the child has to take out and vice versa the child names the colour u have to take out.
I had this game as a child 30 years ago so bought it for my little one. She is only 2 but loves it. She isn’t scared of much so the pirate popping out is hilarious to her and she’s happy to play with it again and again.
I would however have liked it if the whole thing came in a little reusable bag to keep all the swords, pirate and barrel safe.
Good action family game for 2yr old to old age players. Youngsters enjoyed practicality but of course needed help with reset. Taught them to take turns and share a good stepping stone to future games. Then they could play on thei own. An old favourite.
Great customer service. The one we ordered did not work, contacted the seller, they posted a replacement straight away and I returned the faulty one. Replacement very quickly and my son hasn’t even noticed that we had to exchange it.
Good game for my 2 year old. She loves pushing the swords in although they can be a bit finicky and look pushed in, even though they aren’t! We have had the game ‘stick’a few times too and have had to fiddle with it to get it working again. But on the whole, a reasonable price and a good game for small ones.
Excellent game brought as a gift for my son after remembering it from my own childhood. We spend lots of time playing this together, although I still can’t stop myself from jumping every time he pops out lol.
I mean we all know and love pop up pirate right? It was so nostalgic for me to be buying for my daughter. She’s 3, loves pushing the swords in, loves to be made jump when he pops. The slots that make him pop don’t seem to change though, so if they clue up to which one makes him pop then I imagine it wouldn’t be as fun. Works just fine for us though! I also appreciate something from my childhood that’s still exactly the same today.
Loved this game when younger so was very happy to find this on Amazon at such a great price compared to other places !! Cheapest price I’ve found. Was just as much fun as I remembered. Easy to set up and great quality.
A great timeless classic, and fun for all the family and all ages! Myself, missus and my 2 daughters love this and it actually makes you jump when it ‘pops’ so the suspense is funny! Nice little time killer and good fun!!
Good ole pop up pirate! Bought as a Xmas gift. Little boy loves it. Swords are quite sharp once separated from plastic so make sure to file down before using. Other than that its the game we all know and love. Great edition to games night.
Not the most loved games we play but is played with. I assume it just depends on your kids personality. Not expensive so worth a shot!
Our two year old’s first game! I remember seeing this advert as a child and thought it’s a nice, simple, easy to play game without any swallowable little bits. The smallest parts here are the swords, which are safe, but, feel incredibly cheap and don’t really fill the holes / slits properly – you really have to jam them in hard, even then they look like they can fall out any minute…which isn’t great at all frankly. 10 might be a big ask, but it really should be better from Tomy.
The game itself is foolproof and fun, consisting of a barrel, afore mentioned cheap swords (4 different colours) and the eponymous pirate and that’s it! If nothing else, it’s an easy fun game for 10/15 minutes at a time and teaches your child the valuable lessons of sharing and waiting your turn. A pity those swords are so cheap!
I purchased it because of the Korea tv program ‘running man’. It is suitable for gathering with family or friends. Good value and good quality. I bought three, one for me and another two for my friends.
My daughter loves this but some of the swords don’t click into the barrel and fall out… could be better but good fun to play.
A great Game, my children really enjoy it. Only 4* as the pirate doesn’t pop up every time for some reason. Great fun though.
Great game but not very sturdy! You have to hold the barrel to put the swords in but overall good value for money as it’s fun for children!!!
Very simple game. SUITABLE for 3 years old +.
Good fun for children for a few times but nothing very special.
Bought for Christmas for my 3 years old. She just played with us few times and got bored.
A couple of the swords are loose when trying to push in. Apart from that, exactly as it was when I was a child. My 3 year old likes i
Great game let down by a manufacturers defect.
On the green swords all the taps were too small which meant they had nothing to but on to inside the barrel.
I also remember the swords being much thicker on the older versions of the game, but this is much cheaper than they used to be back in the day
Good game. Child loves it. Not all the swords fit and hold in properly all the time. But game is playable
Often seen on the Korean game show “Running Man” its amazing how they can televise a whole game show around the pop up pirate game.
Just goes to show how fun this game can be.
Great for family gatherings and perfect for the kids.
When the pirate goes pop, it does give you a surprize 🙂
Great fun.
This game is advertised for 4+. I brought it to play with my 3 year old and we have had no issues with it. The only small parts that you may come across are little bits of plastic when you take the swords out of there plastic frame. (I have attached a photo of how they arrive)
This game is simple but it is just what I was after, a game the whole family can play. My three year old has had many hours fun playing with this as have I.
This game is also good to help encourage counting as after each game my little one counts how many swords it took that time. Each time is changes. Some times is can be just 1 and the next it could be 20.
It may seem a little pricey for what is it but I would recommend.
This would make a great Christmas or birthday gift.
The game it’s self is great my 3 year old son loves it. I’m giving it a 4 star because I am short of a sword which appears to be a manufacturing fault. I have emailed Tomy & is waiting for a response. It does effect the game if it’s the last hole that will pop & if all 4 colours are being used one player is short so hope to hear from Tomy soo
It’s pretty basic as toys go – pull out the swords, one by one, until the pirate pops up – but it’s one of my nephew’s favourites so who am I to argue with that?
We all love this game, its a right good classic in most households. Very happy to report It’s the same as I remember as a child, both my girls love it. It’s a fun happy family game.
I bought this as I remember how fun it was as a child.
The plastic isn’t as strong as I remember, compared and the box was damaged.
But other than that it is obviously just as I remember it and my little one loves waiting for the pirate to pop up!
This game will always remain one of the all-time favourites. It is a game of complete luck and so it makes it fair for all members of the family, whatever their age. I was very happy to have been able to buy this again brand new given that the one I had as a child was starting to look it’s age.
A simple yet fun game that the children all enjoy playing and has kept them entertained. Great that this game doesn’t have lots of very small parts as the swords are pretty easy to find after the children have scattered them around the room after playing! The perfect family gift.
Present for my granddaughter, we both played it on xmas day and we both enjoyed it, I dont know how long it will last as its just another plastic toy with lots of little bits to lose along the way.
As one of the first few family interactive games, my toddler is obsessed with this. Great to learn how to share with others, be patient and above all have fun. This game was part of her Christmas gifts from me and I’m thrilled I bought it. It’s provided plenty of giggles and is the first game she wants to play every day.
This is a fun little game. Easy game for all ages. The kids are always eager to see which sword will cause the pirate to pop up! Very engaging. Good fine motor practice, and the element of surprise keeps the kids at the game. Only downside is that sometimes the pirate never pops out because the little swords aren’t put in correctly. Otherwise, a deservedly popular game which deserves 5 stars.
Just like it was when i was a kid. We all played xmas day. Lots of swords and well worth the money!
I am 54 and still like this game, although the anticipation of the Pirate popping up can make one feel as if some bodily fluid may escape.
Still well made, a must have for the small people and jolly engaging for us oldies also.
Bought this as a present a few times now having originally bought it for my daughter who loved it. Had to send the latest order of this back due to an unsightly sticker (seems to be covering something up for some reason) on the box and so have ordered a replacement. Not too big of a deal as this is usually a straightforward process and the replacement will probably be here before I even get to work on Monday and print the label off for the return!
Great fun for the kids. When the pirate pops he doesn’t half take a good jump. The kit I bought was faulty (didn’t pop) but Amazon had no issues with me returning it and as I was in a rush I went out and bought one locally which was fine.
One star off therefor for potential build quality issues.
This takes me back! I bought one of these for my eldest Son 30 years ago and the design hasn’t changed a bit – I still have the original up in the loft, a bit faded but still working. Now that my Grandson is old enough, I have asked Santa to bring one of his very own. Can’t wait to enjoy it with him at Christmas time. I have seen slightly cheaper alternatives in the shops, but wonder whether they will still be going strong 30 years later?!!
As a child i remember playing pop up pirate. I think every person as a child either had popup pirate themselves or knew someone that did. It was one of the classic games that was fun but also had a degree of suspense to it. I purchased this for my young nephew for his birthday and he loved it, just as i loved it as a child as well. Him and his friends played with it on his birthday and were screaming with joy when the pirate popped out.
Quality of the item has not changes and works well, very good packaging and an outstanding price.
I got this game as my grandson finds it exciting waiting to see when the pirate pops up. The colours of the swords are nice and bright and as we use this while learning is speech therapy lessons, he gets to choose a colour of a sword and place it in the barrel.
This is worth the tenner I paid as it is a speech aid to make his learning fun, it helps him choose a colour and say the word and also to play the game with his cousins when they come over.
Great product. Hours of fun for my 2 year old. I even bought another for.my nephew and he loved it.
Same as the classic game I played as a child.
The quality is good.
Push the pirate in, put swords in the slot and hope it doesn’t pop out on your go. Simple design, excellent fun.
Brings back memories of being a child and sitting round with my sisters and parents and wondering when the head was going to pop. Goes up there with a list of games that we love playing with our kids, which also includes Yahtzee, Trivial Pursuit Family Edition, Pictionary and Monopoly.
Also bought it when it was under 7.00 too, so no complaining about that either.
I noticed this was down to a half decent price via Amazon’s ‘Cyber Deals Week’ so decided to buy it to add to our Christmas retro game fest.
I’m no longer a child but do suffer from childish tendencies, so planning a retro games afternoon with the family over for this years festive break was a no brainer. As a child Pop-Up Pirate was one of my favourites along with a few other classics like Frustration, Twister, Operation and Guess Who.
I’m hoping to have them all in time for Christmas and starting with this bargain priced classic has given me a real buzz.
A simple game, at a good price.
Easy for little kids to play, as the swords are nice and chunky, and colourful, and the barrel is nice and big.
The pirate pops up sharply and loudly – nice surprise for everyone – just what you expect from this game.
Mine has now started to not do random holes as easily anymre (probably due to excessive play and messing about), but if it does that, just spin the little disc under where the pirate sts, and itll make it random.
Highly recommended for adults and kids! A great game to even the playing field – no knowledge of maths, literature or science required 🙂 This time the kids can win, without the adults letting them!
Push the pirate down and take it turns to drive a sword into a hole in the barrel until one of them pokes the pirate and he jumps a good foot in the air! It is purely down to luck who wins with a different hole activating the mechanism each time. It is just mechanical so no batteries are required.
Play to pop or not to pop, up to you. Good with two players but better with four for added excitement and suspense and you can play rounds. Each game takes just a couple of minutes, so you can always squeeze in a quick game if you are short on time, but promised you’d play something.
Can be used as a fair and fun decision maker if you have two or more children fighting over something!
If your children like this sort of game, try also Dino Bite (really makes you jump) or Buckaroo which has an element or skill as well. If you have a Frozen fan there is also a Pop Up Olaf version .
Great game and a good one to get out if you have family or friends over as anyone can play and it will entertain all ages.

Our little boy is only 27 months, but we wanted to try out family game/fun night. Since he is still little, I was trying to find a simple board/indoor game that we could all play. This fit the bill. He could understand the simple rules and easily manage pushing the swords in and out. The pirate doesn’t jump out as high as I expected, but my son still thought it was hilarious.
We all had fun and have played this game quite a few times. I found it really reinforced the idea of taking turns. It did take us a while to teach him not to grab the pirate out of the barrel (at first he just wanted to play with him), but overall it was a good fit for his age/stage.
This is a great game, which we recently bought for my youngest daughter’s birthday. Both my 3-year-old and 4.5-year-old girls love it. It’s so simple to play, I wish we’d got it earlier, as my 3-year-old doesn’t always understand the rules to other card and board games that my older daughter has, but all you have to do is take it in turns to put swords in with this, which I reckon she could easily have done from aged 2. It’s always a surprise when the pirate finally pops up, and I always shriek because I never expect it to pop up that much. My kids find my theatrical screams an hilarious part of the fun, but they are largely genuine!
NO BATTERIES NEEDED!!! So that means, yes, you take it out the box, remove it from the one bit of packaging, insert the swords and have fun straight away.
No hunting for mini phillips screwdrivers, do breaking teeth on twisted security cables…no mystifying instructions. Kids (3 and 6) enthralled and Daddy is quite happy too!
NOTE: If you are under 30 you will of course have no idea what I’m so happy about…in which case get back to your android device and communicating via ab’rv txt msg n takin selfies of ur piercings and reem tats. If you are over 30 and looking for a toy that brings nostalgia, familiarity and value for money as well as delight to your kids faces….this is the one!
Drove me mad as 4 year old grandson kept asking me to play this with him! Not much to it but if it’s a hit and occupies an active child for half an hour at a time it must be deemed a success. The by-product was the imaginative conversation engendered by it eg “Why’s the pirate in the barrel? What’s he done? What’s in the barrel? Is he telling us fibs?” etc etc We didn’t bother with taking it in turns – it was too much fun stabbing the pirate and making him shout and wondering whereabouts each thrust was hitting him!
My (just turned) 2 year old and my 4.5 year old love playing this. It’s a simple game of chance that’s great for teaching younger children about taking turns. I’d say it’s suitable from about 18m, depending on how dextrous the child is.
My only gripe is that it doesn’t come with spare swords. My son lost 2 swords on the day we bought it (I suspect he posted them down the floorboards grrrrr) and over time a few more have gone missing. It’s only 6 on amazon so I’ve bought a second one to use for spares, but still, shame it doesn’t come with a couple of extras.
At 6 I’ve bought a couple for my birthday party drawer. It’ll make a nice present for boys or girls aged 2-4
