Tracks time asleep very well. If getting very low hours, give it some time to update in the morning – you sometimes need to be out of bed and not got back in for it to update.
Average pulse compared very well to a wrist / thumb monitor. Didn’t pick up the nuances but the average was accurate and correctly identified nights where my average is significantly higher than normal without having to wear anything.
I have been diagnosed with and being treated for sleep apnea because of this monitor
I have zero faith in my gp so felt the need to justify my concerns of sleep apnea and present evidence to him. I bought this monitor and after a few weeks of results… each nights result was the same – severe sleep apnea and poor sleep I went to battle the gp…
The gp scared me some by trusting the monitor and/or me and refered me to the hospital and the result of the hospital sleep studies is that I have been diagnosed as having severe sleep apnea and need to be using a cpap machine every night.
So thank you Withings Sleep Analyzer you did me an amazing thing!
Excellent sleep tracking, it even picked up and notified me of an elevated HR during sleep just before a bout of sickness. The device could clearly see something was up at an early stage
This gives good output on the withings app that can also sync steps from your phone using Google fit and weight from withings scales.
Good way to monitor with red green amber feedback each day and easy to view monthly summary.
It is quite expensive though and if you switch it off at the plug it needs to recalibrate when you switch it back on for 10 minutes before you get back into bed so a 4/5 overall
I bought this sleep tracker because I had heard about it from someone whose opinion I value. It tracks my sleep patterns, and I now know I need to sleep more, but also my BP, and several other things. I have started to do more cardio based on the information this tracker gave me.
Once installed under the mattress, it becomes a setup-and-forget device. The data captured by the device appears to be reliable, and is useful, especially in conjunction with the interpretation aid provided by the app. The “time to get up” is the only metric that’s currently not captured accurately.
Overall, for sleep tracking it’s so much more convenient than a smartwatch at your wrist or ankle. Also good integration with Apple Health.
This has been really helpful for me to work out why I am always tired.
You don’t feel it and there is nothing to do for a continuous monitoring of sleep. The app gives really detailed output of how you are sleeping and gives specifics around duration, depth, regularity, sleep apnea, interruptions and snoring and also hooks up with other data to look at correlation and cause.
Clever bit of kit!
I waited for the price to drop to a sale price as wasn’t sure it justified its RRP… however this has to be commended for ease of setup and use. The stats feel insightful, although there is no real way to know how accurate it is being. Having used the product for a month, though, I can certainly follow my sleeping trends and can usually guess what my sleep score is going to be before I open the app based on how I feel! It’s then interesting to know why that may be the case (lack of sleep depth/regularity/time to fall asleep etc). Not sure about the Sleep Apnea stats, which seem to jump about a bit (0 per hour one night to 9 per hour the next) but maybe that says more about my overall health?? As I said, it’s hard to really know for sure!
My other system is Beddit but it goes under the sheet so can move around and can be felt. The Withins goes under the mattress so is much less obtrusive. The App is also much more detailed and informative.
I think this is quite amazing as I am a bad sleeper and knew I had apnea but of course had no idea how bad as the machines that are strapped onto you by medics have sticky pads to which I’m highly allergic (latex). Therefore it’s been impossible to do a proper sleep apnea test on me. I paid a company a 175 to send me a machine that I was supposed to wear for 2 nights but had to remove the finger attachment after 3 hours as I started getting the latex reaction. They therefore were unable to give me any conclusive results! Private sleep doctor wanted to charge 350 for same analyser so I didn’t carry on with that. Finally this marvellous piece of equipment tells me I have severe apnea so now I’m going to buy myself a c-pap machine and hope all my miseries of feeling so tired and my heart flutter problems will magically dissipate as I hear happens when you treat this serious problem.
It also tells you your depths of sleep and the quality of it plus what your resting heart rate was and has many other features. Well worth the money!! Highly recommend!!!
I have two, for my partner and me.
With Health Mate app, it’s also easy to create different sub accounts and have sepparate monitoring.
I feel the sleep apnea monitoring is working well as reports match my phone sleep app.
I had few instances where I had to reinstal the device and that was a torture. Removing and adding the device is simple but having that device working again as intended was a pain. The app and website user instructions need an update to refelct hardware changes as LED light alerts do not corespond to manuals.
absolutely amazing product to keep up to date on how your sleeping. Also recommends stuff for you to do or do better on the next day to improve your sleep. 100% recommend to anyone with sleep apnea or insomnia to show on a graph how good or bad your sleep is. Worth the money.
Not sure how it works but it does and saves having to wear a watch in bed. Results in the health app look good and I would say correct based upon how I thought I had slept.
I’ve been using one of these for 6 months and it has been working well with my Smart Home system to advise when I am in-bed/asleep (and disabling lighting automations/setting the alarm). I did use this with IFTTT, however I now have a Hubitat Elevation system which has a custom, deeper, integration enabled by the API which WitThings provide – its great they have gone down this route to allow third-parties to integrate with their products and has led me to purchase another one for the spare bedroom.
Some feedback would be on the fact that you can only have 1 of these per account; for those of us with multiple bedrooms, and sleeping in different rooms depending on circumstances (e.g. when it’s hot sleeping at the back of the house, rather than the main bedroom) you have to set up multiple Witthings accounts.
I have one on my side of a king size bed and it seems to cope with no problems. If my wife goes to bed first it completely ignores her (unless she rolls onto my side). Surprisingly it only picks up my snoring as well as I can see that it has not registered any snoring when I am laying there listening to my wife rattling the windows.
The range of information is really useful so hopefully when I go to the Dr about my poor sleep I will have some hard evidence to show them.
I also have it integrated into my home automation system so it detects when I get into bed and switches the light off and back on when I get out of bed (if it’s still dark). It is very quick to respond as well so the light comes on as soon as i stand up.
I have been using Withings monitors and sensors for many years now (from well before the ill-fated few years as Nokia Health) and they just keep producing new innovative quality products that others end up emulating. This time around it is a sleep sensor to monitor how well you sleep, whether you have Sleep Apnea enough to be worried about it, how much you snore and what your heart rate is.
First off, in the box you get the monitor which is a fabric panel that fits underneath your mattress and plugs into a power socket. Using the Health Mate app, you pair this to your home Wi-Fi to sync the data each morning once you have woken up. I found the pairing process to be quick and painless as usual for Withings. Once set up you just sleep as normal and forget about the monitor. The only thing to check is that the monitor is positioned across the bed (only on the side you sleep on) and is level with your heart/chest, otherwise the readings could be off.
After nearly a month of sleeping and using the monitor, I have found it to be accurate and gives me a good guide to how well I am sleeping. The only times I have had issues with accuracy has been when I have been lying in bed reading. This is often detected as light sleep in the app, but changing the time to sleep in the report for the day fixes that. I suspect this misreporting is due to the fact that when reading, I am often fairly still and to a machine, it would give the impression of light sleep not being awake.
The data you get each day in the app is useful, showing how long it took to get to sleep, the different types of sleep that were experienced and for how long, how much disturbance there was, how long it took to get up once awake, how regular the sleep is (time to go to bed and wake up), how your heart rate changes throughout the night, whether there was normal, moderate or severe Sleep Apnea and how much you snored & when. Each individual sleep element can also be further analysed if required. The end result of all this data is a Sleep Score between 1 and 100 (above about 75 is a good nights sleep).
I use the Withings Sleep Analyser as another of the tools for monitoring my health. It is well-made and does what it sets out to very well. Like all Withings products, it does command a price premium which is the reason for the 4* review not 5* – Withings kit is expensive when compared to much of the other kit on the market.
Love the design and set up of this Under-Mattress Sleep Tracker is a totally game-changing sleep analyze mat.
In general, I am a light sleeper and often sleeping poorly, but I do not have sleep apnea or snoring. I compared results using Sleep Cycle Alarm clock app, After using the Sleep Analyze mat device, the app shows good detailed accurate statistic. From my result over the 3 weeks, my results show that sleep on average 6-7 hours per day. In some case, I have had a few poor sleeping scores of under 50 where indicated in the red circle. A few good nights of quality sleep were indicated in green (when I didn’t take an afternoon nap).
Verdict, I love it cause I am now able to find solutions to improve my quality sleepy is by not taking nap during the day. Easy to set up by following the instruction manual. Always on – no buttons to push and was ably synchronised even when your smartphone not within reach.
The only downside is can only work for one person and its a little fiddly to set up and it took me about 15-20 minutes to set up including testing. Overall, I highly recommend this product to anyone.
Very interesting device!
I install with my husband helpand I am very pleased, works well.
Has snore detection and sleep heart rate, this is very interesting and when you wake up everything goes in app results.
Anyway, I found it a little bit to expensive.
My husband has issues with his sleep so we decided to test this product.
The setup part is easy and straightforward but you have to be careful with the below:
* Use the provided adapter
* The sensor location should be on the heart level
* The sensor needs time initially to calibrate, and you should not use the bed in the meantime
* Update the sensor to the latest software!!!!!
This works with a smartphone and you have to download the application called HealthMate.
+ I believe that if this is installed correctly, it is accurate. My husband’s results from day 1 are what I also noticed myself.
+ It accurately calculated the time he slept, and didn’t included the time that he was lying on the bed watching TV prior to sleeping.
+ Even the breakdown of sleep to Deep/REM/Light I find it correct because it shows low % of deep/REM sleep. My husband complaints that even if he sleeps, he wakes up tired.
+ calculated sleep apnea as well
+ monitors heart rate
+ This is a big plus for me… that the sensor is upgradable. It means they are fixing and issues or bugs reported to make the device even more accurate.
+ The app is great, easy to understand and navigate and you can link/sync it with the Apple health.
+ high quality materials used. Package feels luxury but simple, long wire with mesh fabric. 2 adaptors included for European and UK plugs
+ I believe the price is reasonable based on the quality of the sensor and the application.
Overall, I think this is a great product for people that have issues with their sleep or heart. We will continue testing it and update the review after 3 months with the overall findings.
The Withings sleep analyzer is powered by a 3 pin plug and provided adapter. After placing mat under the mattress, about the same level as the heart, the device has to be set up with a smartphone or tablet, and needs 10 mins to calibrate.
After the sleep session, it provides lots of information, such as detection of sleep apnea, snoring, and a heart-tracking rate. This would be a useful device for anyone who suspects they have sleep apnea, as the condition can cause high blood pressure, memory problems, weight gain, impotence and head-aches. The heart tracking rate, indicating whether enough time is spent in a deep sleep is also useful, as poor sleep patterns often lead to depression.
Like many others, I was convinced that I didn’t snore, but I was surprised to see it recorded on my data output.
I usually get 6-7 hours of sleep a night and the analyzer was consistent in that respect with a sleep score of 60%.
One thing that put me off the tracker is the fact that it is plugged in the main socket while you are asleep (I don’t like electric blankets either) but that is just a personal obsession, that I’m sure wouldn’t worry the majority.
For people who are genuinely concerned about their sleep patterns and whether it is affecting their health or not, I would say this analyzer would give them some useful information that they could work on, and try to improve.
Handily, this comes with both a two pin and three pin plug for the USB to go into. The lead is a good length, easily longer than my single bed. I was concerned that it wouldn’t work well as I have a slatted bed. However, the app helped with this by suggesting to put cardboard underneath it. The analyser uses bluetooth to connect to the phone and this was done in a matter of seconds, no problems. I’m also pleased to see that wifi transmissions get turned off during sleep. The whole set up process was incredibly easy.
After the first night of using it and looking at my data, what I loved about it was that it’s colour coded so that I know whether something is in the appropriate range or not. Apparently my sleep wasn’t restorative and was bad. Having ME/CFS, I’m not surprised, but it’s good to have this evidence. Throughout testing, I never managed to reach ‘good’ sleep. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that it often records sleep when I’m not actually sleeping, as light sleep. As an example, it recorded an extra hour one morning when I was looking at my phone. This would then knock the percentages out of balance and doesn’t give me a completely accurate picture. For anyone with an electric blanket, it doesn’t seem to inhibit the device as I’ve tried it with and without.
I’ve been testing this out for a while to see if it adapts better to my sleeping patterns and registers my habits more.
At the beginning I found that if stayed really still in bed before falling asleep, for example if I was reading, then because I am so relaxed it seemed to think that I was asleep so in my opinion I don’t really acknowledge the percentage score of how well I have slept anymore.
What this is good for though is tracking your sleep apnea (snoring and breathing problems) and REM. It was very interesting to see my sleeping patterns overtime and also correlate them to how stressed on that particular day/night.
I also prefer this to wearing my watch, you really don’t feel I it under your mattress it just slides right in and I don’t think the thickness of the mattress makes a difference either. It’s also really easy to set up, I have other Withings products so I already had the Health Mate app and it was easy to install and add another device.
When this works, it does a brilliant job of analysing sleep – there are plenty of data available on the app, from the basics like the length of sleep time to more in-depth information such as breathing disturbances. The app is excellent, and provides plenty of information. However, for me at least, the app does not provide data for at least a part of each night. This could be because I sleep alone in a king size bed, and the analyser, at only two foot long, can only be placed under a part of the mattress. It may well be that I roll off it during the night. Also, I think from reading the instructions that the analyser works better on a divan than on a slatted base such as mine.
You will need a mains socket near the bed as the analyser is mains powered, and a smartphone as the app is an essential part of the experience.
The analyser, as I mentioned, is only two foot long – much smaller than I anticipated – and the sensor box protrudes maybe half an inch from the mat itself. Because of this, I am very aware of it when I am in bed – I can clearly feel it through the mattress.
Notwithstanding the above comments, I think this is an excellent device, and something that has made me more aware of my sleep patterns.
I should start this review by stating that I am a long time sufferer of maintenance insomnia . I have used many, MANY devices and gadgets over the years to get a better picture and understanding of my sleep habits. I’ve used wrist based devices, finger mounted trackers, bedside trackers etc.
The device must first be ‘setup’ via a smartphone. To do this you must download their APP to the phone. The setup is very simple, the app can be connected only once on the phone. The device sits under your mattress and is thin enough not to cause any worry to it, not to damage the bottom of the mattress or make you Can’t feel it.
The beauty of this device is that you literally do not have to do anything at bed time to ‘use’ it. You go to bed, you get up and it does its thing transparently. The automatically transmits your sleep data once it has detected you’ve left the bed for a preset length of time in the morning. I have found that data can get a bit misleading if you are prone to tossing and turning a lot, the heart rate and breathing can sometimes go astray or could lead you to believe you have signs of apnea as the breathing reading often drops quite low.
You actually require a lot less ‘deep’ sleep than you might be led to think and people can sometimes get a bit panicky when a device says they’e only had an hour of deep sleep. Your sleep is made up of various ‘phases’ including deep, rem and light sleep and the actigraphy based devices will simply estimate what phase you were in based on how little or how much you were moving.
All said and done, I can say that the is a good, if very expensive, device for those that want a generally more accurate idea of their sleep health than most wrist based devices offer. If you are looking for something that will track down and monitor specific sleep events/problems, this isn’t reliable enough to do that unless like me you’re using it alongside other more accurate equipment.
Many times I waken up and tell my partner I had a rotten night’s sleep, or at other times jump out of bed ready to take on the world. I have always wondered what the difference is between the two and was tempted to try the sleep analyser to see if it provided the answers.
Firstly installation was easy, the pad was placed on beech wood slats, under the eight inch mattress which was covered in electric under blanket and cotton sheet and then plugged in. We already have a set of Withings scales, so I didn’t need to download the app as it was already installed on our iPads and iPhones. Following the instructions in the app, the analyser was quickly and easily identified and calibrated.
The analysis of my first night’s sleep was interesting and started me reading up on the various readings that it reported. Getting enough deep sleep works to repair tissue and bones and strengthen the immune system, light sleep prepares you for deep sleep with heart rate and body temperature dropping and REM sleep in which you tend to dream is important in learning and making or retaining memories. All my three readings were good, although the second night didn’t register any REM sleep and, whether it was pyscological or not, I found I kept forgetting why I had gone into a room for something (although this could also be attributed to old age!).
My sleep apnea has been normal to mild for every night I have used the analyser.
I’m not sure about the snoring reading as, contrary to what my partner tells me, I DO NOT SNORE! The analyser suggested that I snore on average for an hour each night – obviously wrong (but most likely right…).
The number of interruptions was accurate when I obeyed the call of nature during the night.
I have an Apple Watch and normally take it off overnight and put it on to charge, however in order to check the readings from the Withings sleep analyser against the app on the watch, I slept with the watch on one night and compared the readings the following day. Most readings were within acceptable variances, with the time in bed being absolutely accurate.
One reading that was not accurate but understandable, after one of my calls of nature I spent a good hour reading my Kindle, this time was recorded as light sleep as I wasn’t moving but my watch recorded this as awake because my hand was moving to change pages.
Conclusion – it provides a brilliant report on your sleep patterns with help and tips as to how to improve your night’s sleep, I look forward to using it for many nights to come.
I have to confess that I had no idea anything as smart as this was available, let alone that it would be so easy to use. At least, it’s easy after initial setup which is tedious and takes time but isn’t difficult and is a one-off task. The Analyser doesn’t do a great deal that a good smart watch won’t do but has the advantage that you don’t have to think about it and don’t have to wear a watch in bed. You do need to connect it to wi-fi, with Bluetooth to your phone. And you’ll need a mains socket near the bed.
The grey pad goes under your mattress at chest level. If the bed base is slatted, you’ll need something solid to support the mat — a piece of hardboard, mdf or plywood, for example. I was surprised at just how much data it could gather through the mattress — through clever use of pressure and noise sensing, apparently, with sophisticated differentiation between different sounds and even sound made by my partner. There were a few inaccuracies, but no more than from my Apple Watch, and it provides more information than the Watch.
The Withings Health Mate app works with all(?) their health products, so if you have others they can all be managed in one place. You’ll have to tolerate US spellings in the app, such as apnea, and imperial measures for height and weight. Very poor. I found creating an account from the app extremely annoying too. I normally create passwords in a password manager and copy them into the app, to make sure there are no typos, but it wouldn’t let me paste. Doing it the other way round was no good because it starred out what I was typing, so I couldn’t copy it. Grrr!
Anyway, once it’s set up, go to bed and, when you get up the next morning, a wealth of data will await you in the app. Too much to digest in a hurry. Save it to review later, perhaps on the train to the office. I’m not going through the details — the Amazon description gives you a good idea of what to expect.
It’s all very clever and will be valuable if you need comprehensive statistics or just want a new gadget. I’ve certainly had a lot of fun ‘playing’ with it. For anyone who really needs a product like this, it is probably worth five stars. If you already have a good fitness tracker or smartwatch, however, you may not get enough extra information out of the Analyser to justify the cost.
Replaced my previous aura sensor with this new version and it works perfectly. Just be aware you need to put the sensor at chest level to get good readings. As a bonus, automation via IFTT is great to trigger scenarios when you got to bed … sweet dreams.
