I’m more than satisfied with the quality of audio the H6 generates: up to 24 Bit 192 kHz. Results are interesting when using additional mics in any of the 4 XLR/TRS inputs, can which I’ve been experimenting with in different positions. As far as battery longevity is concerned (either AA alkaline or rechargeable NiMH), Zoom claim 20 hours usage and I’ve managed to go 16 without replacement. Phantom power is also available in the menu with 3 settings: 12, 24 + 48V. I just wish I’d have got one years ago ~ as it’s coming in very handy

I studied Audio engineering at college in the late 1980’s. I had my own studio for thirteen years and still have an expensive relatively high end recording set up and a large number of microphones. Some of which cost 500-1500. I’ve have some relatively rare high end microphone preamps so my view of the H6 is based on personal experience from working with some high end gear.
I wasn’t expecting much from the XY microphone set up to be honest and the audio quality of the microphone preamps, though I’d say I’m pleasantly surprised. Being able to shift the width of the mics is clever in a unit in this price range. The unit feels solid and the knobs and switches feel robust. In fact as a package you seem to get a lot for the money. I bought it for field recording and recording ideas in the campervan mainly and have tried it with a pair of AKG 451EBs which are definitely better than the built in mics but the built in mics are perfectly sufficient for some relatively serious recording. Using the H6 with one of my favourites preamps (DAV Electronics BG1) with the AKGs and the conversion set to 24bit 96k gives an impressive file output which is clearly better than the built in mics though this is an expensive system to compare them to. As a line recording system for me it is miles better than I would have expected considering the price point, to the point I’m happy to use it when away from my more expensive home setup. Having 4 phantom powered mic pres AND the XY then the price of the unit is almost unreal. Using a Shure SM7B with the built in pres is less impressive but the Shure Is known for requiring a decent boost from a high gain mic preamp though the sound for voice over is really rather good without one. It depends on your expectations of low end hiss of which there is little in that case. For streaming, podcasting or YouTube then I’d say this excels.
Using the menu system is okay but feels a little dated though the screen is not bad. The issue I have with the tilted screen is setting levels if you were say, playing a guitar in front of the XY mics as the screen tilts away from you. I resorted to a mirror to set the levels if you don’t have a friend around to help. This is short coming I didn’t really think about but not a deal breaker.
All in all, I would have died for this when I was starting out with a tape based four track (Tascam Porta 1 in the early 80’s) and this way out performs what was on offer during those days. All this for under 300 for most people without stupidly high expectations is a serious steal. Even if you don’t use the build in mics then this is a four track for line or mic inputs and having four phantom powered preamps at a time makes this surprisingly attractive. I’m going to keep and use this for many years to come.
Wer den Zoom H5 kennt, wird sich auf dem H6 sofort zurecht finden. Die Mensteuerung ist im Vergleich ausgesprochen bersichtlich, jedoch immer noch ziemlich fummelig. Das Gehuse ist robust fr den Feldeinsatz, die Bedienelemente griffig. – Mein Manko: Beim Overdubbing kann man den Kanlen keine Dateien zuordnen. Einzig aus diesem Grund ging der Kauf doch wieder zurck.
Teurer aber weniger Zubehr! Wenn die ausgezeichnete Klangqualitt nicht wre… Knpfe knnten fr dieses Preisniveau robuster sein.
Tolle Qualitt. Den Ton manuell aussteuern zu knnen, erleichtert die Arbeit ungemein.
Einziges Manko: Es gibt nur zwei Spracheinstellungen am Gert. Japanisch und Englisch

Material / Verarbeitung:
Abgesehen von dem Bereich an der Oberseite, an dem die Mikrofonkapseln angeschlossen werden, ist der Zoom H6 komplett aus Plastik. Klingt doof, ist es aber nicht! Das Gehuse macht einen durchaus hochwertigen und vor allem auch robusten Eindruck. Die Verarbeitung ist hier wirklich gelungen. Ich persnlich habe keine Mngel oder Unsauberheiten feststellen knnen. Insofern ist es also vllig in Ordnung, dass hier “nur” mit Plastik gearbeitet wurde. Immerhin spart man so auch eine Menge Gewicht!
In Sachen Verarbeitung fallen mir davon abgesehen vor allem die Regler fr die vier Tonspuren positiv auf. Diese lassen sich butterweiche und sehr angenehm drehen. Sie bieten aber trotzdem genug Widerstand, um sie przise zu steuern und nicht aus versehen durch leichtes Berhren zu verstellen. Auerdem sind sie nach auen hin durch kleine “Wnde” abgeschirmt, die genau das ebenfalls verhindern sollen. Die restlichen Bedienelemente sind einfache Plastikknpfe, zu denen man nicht viel spannendes sagen kann. Diese wirken weder besonders hochwertig, noch billig und erfllen ihren Zweck.
Die kleinen Gummife an der Unterseite sind allerdings nur eine nette Idee. Sicherlich rutscht der Zoom dadurch nicht ganz so stark, als wenn die Fe fehlen wrden, aber wirklich rutschfest ist anders. Im Gesamtpaket ist das so aber allemal in Ordnung!
Display:
Vor allem im Vergleich zum H1N ist das Display natrlich ein wahnsinniger Schritt. Leicht schrg verbaut und super hell – so lsst sich wirklich alles immer sehr gut erkennen. Da gibt es fr mich absolut nicht zu meckern! Ich habe zwar auch schon mehrfach gehrt, dass sich manch einer ein Touch-Display wnscht … ganz ehrlich, ich halte das fr Quatsch. Bei so einem Gert muss man die Tonspuren und den Pegel gut erkennen knnen und fertig. Das funktioniert hier perfekt!
Funktionalitt:
Wie bereits erwhnt, lassen sich einzelne Tonspuren sehr angenehm und gut pegeln – in Kombination mit dem guten Display funktioniert das alles wunderbar. Auch die sonstigen Bedienelemente sind im Grunde vllig selbsterklrend. Aufnahmestart / -stopp, einzelne Tonspuren zu- und abschalten, vor- und zurckspulen, lauter, leiser, Hold … Alles gut und praktisch angeordnet, sodass man sehr schnell mit dem Gert zurechtkommt. Na gut, die Menbedienung mit einem kleinen Wippschalter an der Seite ist fr manchen vielleicht etwas gewhnungsbedrftig, ich persnlich habe mich daran aber kaum gestrt und bin sehr schnell damit zurechtgekommen. Auerdem bentige ich das Men nur sehr selten.
Die Menfhrung und der Aufbau an sich ist vielleicht nicht perfekt, fr mich aber absolut praktikabel und in Ordnung. Ich habe alles, was ich brauchte, sehr schnell gefunden und kann mich daher nicht beschweren. Ich arbeite allerdings auch seit Jahren mit Sony, weshalb ich durchaus deutlich seltsamere Mens gewohnt bin. Wirkliche Probleme drfte hiermit aber nun wirklich niemand haben.
Positiv ist mir auerdem aufgefallen, dass der Zoom H6 wirklich schnell hochfhrt. Man schaltet das Gert an und nach nur wenigen Sekunden ist er sofort voll da und einsatzbereit. Das ist top!
Die austauschbaren Mikrofonkapseln kennt man ja auch schon von anderen Zoom Audiorekordern. Das ndert aber natrlich nichts daran, dass diese Funktion natrlich absolut genial ist. Aktuell benutze ich zwar nur den Standard X-Y-Kopf, werde aber knftig sicherlich noch das Richtmikrofon und vielleicht auch noch das Modul fr zwei weitere Tonspuren dazukaufen. So ist man fr jede Situation maximal flexibel.
Tonqualitt:
Grandios! Ich habe den Zoom mit unterschiedlichen Ansteckmikros sowie Richtmikrofonen von Sennheiser und Rode getestet und bin absolut begeistert. Die Tonqualitt ist wirklich gut. Vor allem Stimmen klingen klar und haben genug Bass. Natrlich hngt das auch stark vom Mikrofon ab, klar – trotzdem habe ich auch mit wirklich gnstigen Modellen sehr gute Resultate erzielt. Hier und da ist das Grundrauschen dann natrlich schon deutlich hrbar – das lsst sich heutzutage aber zum Glck mit einem Klick in der Nachbearbeitung entfernen.
Positiv:

Fazit:
Meiner Meinung nach kann man mit dem Zoom H6 absolut nichts falsch machen, wenn man fr Videographie und oder Podcastproduktionen einen vernnftigen Audiorekorder mit mehreren Tonspuren bentigt. Die Punkte, die ich als negativ benannte habe, sind schon wirklich meckern auf hohem Niveau … irgendetwas muss an einem Gert ja auch “schlecht” sein. Ich kann den Zoom H6 auf jeden Fall absolut empfehlen. Wie immer gilt aber natrlich, dass man selbst wissen muss, was man braucht.
