Multitrack recording has never been easierThe R8 provides eight tracks for recording and playback (up to two tracks can be recorded simultaneously) in full fidelity WAV format, making it ideal for both professional production and for use as a musical sketchpad. Battery operation allows for field recording and enables you to capture your musical ideas quickly. You can connect external microphones or line-level sources directly to the R8, or use the built-in stereo mic pair for minimal setup. You can also plug instruments such as electric guitar or bass right into the R8. | Create music any way you likeThe R8 is a pad sampler and rhythm machine too. Eight velocity-sensitive pads allow the triggering of up to 24 samples, drum sounds, or loops. In addition, you can create your own custom samples and loops from recorded audio tracks. Quantization and time-stretching can be applied to ensure perfect synchronization. Three playback modes are available for each pad (Repeat, Gate, and 1Shot), and the onboard audio sequencer allows step entry when absolute precision is required. | Control your DAWIf you use DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software, you probably love mixing in the box but hate mixing with a mouse. The R8’s Mackie Control emulation enables it to act as a full-featured control surface for popular DAWs such as Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live, and Sonar, adding physical faders and transport/status buttons that streamline the process of creating the perfect mix. In addition, five assignable function keys allow you to set marker points and initiate advanced editing operations. | State of the art editing with every multi-track recorderThe Zoom R8 comes with a free download license for Steinbergâs Cubase LE music production software, providing not just the ability to capture incredible audio in every box, but to do spectacular things with them. Take your recordings to a more professional level. Steinbergâs powerful and state-of-the-art audio software used by creators around the world now comes with every Zoom R24, R16, and R8 purchase. |

Very good little box. Does a lot and sounds excellent for the price!
This is a quality product and so versatile. So much you can do, it’s basically a whole studio, everything you need for home recording. Buy it now.
Spettacolare!!!
This is an amazing machine it’s fantastic if you come up with an idea no matter where you are you can record it in high quality
The more I use this the more features I find , it seems a bit daunting at first as if you’re overwhelmed but it has a brilliant instruction manual and there’s an awful lot of YouTube videos on how to use. The Mackie controls are great a very light machine 4 batteries double As or works off the USB battery lasts a good few hours I use rechargeable. The quality and the versatility of this machine astounds me of course you can do all of this on your computer but using a mouse does not compare to having real faders and real buttons they put everything into this machine once you grasp the whole concept which is a bit of a steep learning curve you will be delighted you bought this I am. On a personal note I do most of my recording in my work room usually when I finish a song I have to call my wife up to have a listen ,this I can just pick up and bring it to her, if you mistakenly delete or over right a track you can actually go back four or five recordings to find the one you deleted
I wanted something portable with an acceptable sound quality, yet within my limited budget. The machine fits the hill perfectly. I have had this machine for about a year and I’ve had great fun with it. At home I use this machine to record guitars, synth and drum machine tracks and I have used it down the allotment where I keep an old acoustic guitar for quick recording of ideas that pop into my head while I’m pootling around – using the built in stereo mics. I was already pleased that I bought this machine before I learned how to record in stereo & bounce tracks!.
This is a device that always fascinated me, because it tries to be so many different things.
It is a portable multitrack recorder, a multi-effect unit, a sound card, a control surface, a reharsal device and even somewhat an instrument, with its little pads.
I was around when tape 4 tracks recorders were the only option for small bands, and of course something like this would have blown everybody’s mind, but now of course technology is way more advanced.
So, these are my impressions, as someone who plays guitar but also other instruments:
– Portable multitrack recorder
The batteries last long enough, and of course being AA one can carry spares. I found it anoying that if left switched off for a few weeks it will drain the batteries anyway.
The two internal microphones are decent, but they need to be quite close to record properly acoustic instruments while keeping gain (and therefore noise) down.
Switching tracks, changing levels, setting markers and scrolling precisely is easy. Other operations, like chainging panning, take a few extra clicks. The earphones out is very clean.
However, at least with my unit, sometimes there is noise when using external microphones. I think it is a problem with internal soldering because playign with the switches a bit will tipically solve the problem.
In term so portability, it is small enough to fit in a small back pack, or even a guitar gig bag pocket.
But it is not rock solid, so a protective pouch is very necessary in my opinion.
The backlit display is visible enough even with sun light.
It only records in Wav, for certain applications I would prefer MP3 as an option too.
– As a multi effect
I like the sounds in general, and some of the effects, like reverb and even mastering ones, are pretty good.
It is not very suitable in performance, i you need to switch effects quickly, of course. But it does allow to connect a click pedal, which is mainly useful for recording and overdubs, I found.
– As a soundcard
It works pretty well. However, I never managed to use Zoom’s asio drivers. So I am always used Asio4All instead. It should be noticed that, when using it as a soundcard, the R8 will not allow using the internal effects unless set to a low sampling rate.
Also, every single time you switch it on, or switch the computer on with it connected, it needs to be told to work as a soundcard, because it always start as a standalone recorder.
– As a control surface. It supports Mackie, meaning quite a few apps can use it as a control surface. I use Reaper as a DAW and it works great with that. The sliders and wheel are fine enough to adjust things on the fly. I also used it with video editors and even photo editors. My only complaint is that I would like more of the buttons to be usable, including the soft pads, which would be very useful for one click operations.
– As a reharsal tool
It does have a metronome, of course, along with a tuner. Backtrack can be either imported as wav files, not mp3, which is a pain, and set and cut as loops. Or one can rely on the internal sequencer to lay drumtracks to play over.
I like that among the effects there is a guitar to bass one, so you cna also add some bass and come with something good to jam on. Adjusting the tempo without changing pitch is finnicky, but can be done.
Again, you cannot convert everything to MP3, it is just wav.
Importing and exporting files to the unit is done by removing the memory card, which is not great, direct USB connection would be better.
Of course, one could also plug into one mic input a mobile phone and play, or even record, the backtracks like that.
– As a production tool
One could in principle record a whole album on this, track by track, mastering included.
If I was stuck on a desert island with my instruments and only one device, I would probably choose this one (or its bigger brothers, R16 and R24), because it has it all one way or another.
But admittedly, being stuck on a desert island is the only reason I would consider spending the time and effort to become sufficiently proficient with it to perform all of that easily.
It is way easier and faster to use a computer, or even ipad, DAW. With the R8 maybe as a soundcard and control surface. But I cannot immagine many people in 2021 wanting to do it all on the R8.
– As a musical notebook
This is of course one reason I got it for. The idea of being able to record a riff or an idea quickly anywhere, without having to switch on the computer, and save it there to go back to it. It works for that pupose, but it is not necessarily immediate. In that respect, my boss micro is faster to setup for a quick recording and more importantly it is smaller, so mor elikely to be around when inspiration strikes. Of course, one could create a project just for that, with tracks already setup, to make it faster to get to the moment you can record, but it is not ideal. Maybe they should have added a “record now” button, which you can press any time to just start recording, and the relative file just gets stored somewhere on the card with the recording time as the default name.
– Is it durable?
So and so. It will not take well to falls, and while the side sections protect the controls a bit from impacts, they also contain the internal microphones.
Aside fo the aforementioned occasional microphone noise/interference, the track selector for track one stopped working last year, the rest seems to hold up still well enough.
Going back, would I buy it again? All considered yes, probably.
Mainly because it served me well as a soundcard and control surface, it still does. But it is now permanently set on a stand. So looking back perhaps I would have got an R16, for the extra inputs and, more importantly, the ability to record more than two microphones at the same time.
Wonderful gizmo but let down by the manuals that were in German and French. I had to buy a separate book on Amazon that had English instructions.
This is a very nice piece of kit, with extensive recording capabilities. You will need to buy an SD Card – suggest 16GB max. The manual is quite a read, but my suggestion is to look on You Tube – there are many detailed descriptions of how to use this item.
All in all very pleased!
Sound quality is very good and easy to use just to lay down a couple of tracks when ever you hear that tune playing in your head and you want to catch it before you forget it ! Great value, small and compact great !!
On verra…
Ottimo registratore multitraccia, consiglio a chi vuol registrare le proprie performance.
So easy to use too. Recording, track bouncing, sampling and looping is a cinch.
Perfect for getting ideas down quickly. Plenty of preset rhythm patterns and kits to keep you busy, though creating your own is easy enough.
It comes bundled with the latest Cubase LE (via download); pretty cool music production software for those that fancy dabbling a bit further.
Songs, projects and files save to an SD card (not suppled) or can be exported via USB to another device.
As I said. Al lovely bit of kit. Well done Zoom. Saving up for the 12 track now.
Good peice of equipment only just stated using it but it has performed OK
For the money this is brilliant.
Can’t think of anything else that does the job so well.
I’ve uploaded a master to PC, played with the rhythms, made loops, all sorts! Great. Well done Zoom.
Oh, small issue…. Drum sounds/loops are a bit lacking.
This is one brilliant machine , it can be a bit tricky to get to grips with, and I’m still, after 2 weeks, wrestling to link it all up with the software… it all seems so complicated to me. But hopefully when I have that sussed, chart domination must surely only be a matter of time
Highly recommended
Lots to take in at this early stage but the usual Zoom attention to detail at a great price. My only slight gripe is the small display.
Great piece of kit takes a while to get used to it.i recomend watching a few you tube tutorials to help you get on you’re way
Very versatile. Easy to use and so powerful in its multi-tracking possibilities.
ease of use compared to my old Tascam dpo1fx. I have been using it to record my instruments and vocals.
The device itself is brilliant and is helping me creatively in a massive way. Shame there was only a European plug in the box so I can only power it by USB; hence 4*
Currently I’ve only tried recording and overdubbing guitars and vocals – drum machine, bass, keyboards and anything else I can lay my hands on to make a musical (ish) sound will come later.
But for now, it’s almost as much fun as anyone (with a musical inclination) can have with their clothes on.
You have to read the manual. More than once.
You must obtain a footswitch to punch in/out – I found that the “kick” switch pedal from an old drum machine works fine so I guess any momentary close pedal will do.
I also recommend searching for and downloading the electronic version of the manual. It’s much easier to search for some of the instructions that aren’t particularly well indexed eg how to set up the aforementioned pedal for punch i/o rather that start/stop.
I’ve only started to scratch the surface and it’s already amazing. The built: in mics are pretty good and the built in effects are excellent.
I’ll add more as I explore, but: I highly recommend this recorder.
It auto-saves on exit, and is real quick starting up and shutting down, which is a great asset. It is light and rugged enough.
My only complaint is the way the guitar effects are organised. When you are selecting presets and you pause on a particular preset, it scrolls to the right to show the full name (because the column is not wide enough) The problem with this is it ghosts really badly, and is hard to look at. Seems like a small thing, but believe me it is really, really annoying (I am a guitarist). Even so, five stars, because at this price point, even without the effects or sampler, it is still a steal.
Really happy with this purchase, perfect for my current musical need’s. The built in microphone’s record a good quality sound. The setup is easy to use and just what I need at my level guitar playing.
Excellent piece of kit. Connects to the computer easily with really low latency which is a first for my laptop. After getting my head around the manual, recording is really easy. Nice amount of control over guitar tone. Really useful.
1. The autosave on power down
2. The mastering effects are very good and give a lot of choice (presets) and produce good results although i find that the dual mic options for compression also give good compression results.
3. The overall sound quality is good and captures the recording accurately. I have a lot of synths and it is quite demanding to record these.
4. Using the menus is quite straight forward. I wont probably use the sampler or drum tracks much as i have all of this in the synths i have. It took a short while to find the stereo track settings required but the manual explained the requirements.
5. There is a way of getting midi clock from the Zoom R8 or R24 (not R16!)…. If you purchase the Soundbite Micro Sampler/Midi Clock Analyser (available here at Amazon) and use this from the headphone out with the metronome set to output from the headphone socket then the Soundbite will convert this to Midi Clock perfectly ok. It works really well.
6. The access of the R8 WAV files direct to the PC with a USB cable makes life easier.
The Zoom R8 represents great value for money, concidering it has resampling time stretch, multi-effects, 24 bit recording,
The only think the faders feels a bit cheap and are a bit rough but ok hence 4/5.
The price from Amazon is the best in the UK by some margin and the delivery was prompt and on time.
Good robust construction. Loaded with mixing effects. Takes a while to get to grips with various functions, but results are phenominal.
Great piece of kit for anyone looking to enhance an audio recording studio on a budget. It does what its supposed to without costing a fortune, worth every penny.Highly recommended.
Buon prodotto
One real bonus is how good it is as a controller for mixcraft 7 (in mackie control mode). Works very well and I can plug it in and master my tracks on the PC if I want to.
Here’s a sample of some blues (guitar mic’d up, harp recorded using a guitar sim)
https://soundcloud.com/ben-church-2/drifting-blues
In short – I really like it. Perhaps just the panning being menu driven and the sheer plastic look of the thing prevent it from being 5 star…but I heartily recommend.
A well thought-through and easy to use unit. Generations ahead of the Tascam line.
Absolutely incredible! Better than almos anything on the market, however never really got into the 8 track itself as its really quite fiddly to record a track with. Works best as an AI imo. However disappointing for such a good bit of gear at that price that it only has two xlr inputs, meaning it’s basically useless for proffesional use where you need 8+ inputs to record drums etc. Zoom do have an AI with 8 inputs however, but it’s VERY over priced. I really want Zoom to create a basic 8+ channel AI with no effects/Extras as they could easily compete with M-Audio etc.
Drum machine does the job, though I use an external one.
And its very portable, with two internal mics for on the fly recording. Only used a 4Gb SD for demo tracks to date. Could lose SD cover if not careful.
Not used the software as yet.
Best tool for the price.
AL
We use it to make rehearsal tracks, capture ideas, record our live shows, mix down to the PC, everything really.
Excellent but had to return the first one as it stopped recognising the completed projects
good bit of kit so far..yes its good thats why I bought it.good good good.iiiiiii do think it is like
I use it only for recording solo acoustic guitar, so there’s a wealth of other features (the rhythm programming, the use of the included Cubase) which I can’t comment on, but based on this application alone I’d highly recommend it. Relatively easy to use (though like other Zoom products, you’ll need to dip into the manual regularly), light and portable, and has lasted well so far with no problems. Good sound quality and a very usable range of effects. You’ll need to upgrade the included SD card fairly quickly, though, as you’ll run out of space frustratingly soon. Remember to copy across the system files and included drum loops though before you wipe the card that ships with the R8, as there’s some on there that’s nowhere else!
The onboard mics are OK for sketches or recording a rehearsal, but for something you want to keep, not surprisingly you will need to invest in some external mics.
All in a terrific little recorder for the money. Highly recommended.
Looks good and he obviously enjoys it. An excellent product and fits well in his little studio. Keeps him quiet!
But this is a classic and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to any bedroom song writer doing demos. With a decent DAW and a bit of know how, near pro studio quality would be well within reach.
The Zoom is ideal for me. I like to record guitar, vocals, a few keyboard tracks. I have only read one page of the manual and am now recording 8 tracks easily and editing them on the PC. I use Audacity rather than any form of Cubase because it is so easy in comparison. The sound is very, very clean too.
For someone who just wants to play, compose and record simply, I would really recommend this. Very easy. I would rather spend my time writing and playing than faffing around with technology, so this is a winner. As I see it, this is for musicians who want to be musicians rather than techies!
What I don’t understand is how anyone could possibly give this a bad review for the price that it is. It is an absolute steal – but if you want to go pro, then you will need to spend a lot more. But ease of use, value for money and results (for the money) I would give this top marks.
(I would recommend buying another, bigger memory card)
It contains dozens of preset drum patterns for you to play along to.
Before even reading the manual I was up and running, laying down a song in under 10 minutes.
Not all of the controls are simple however and things like sequence-editing require a little bit of research to get right.
Each track is recorded separately in a WAV file which means that you could record a whole bunch of WAVs and then rearrange them on the DAW software. You can assign any filename to a track so you could potentially record hundreds of WAVs within a project. Stereo WAVs are also possible.
Cubase LE DAW software is included but I have misplaced the DVD (I bought this back in November) so haven’t used it yet.
The manual is self-referencing so you need to hop about to find the information you need but this isn’t a big problem as it’s a physical booklet.
One obvious limitation is that only two inputs may be used at a time which means that live recordings would have to be mixed down to a single stereo source or captured via external mics or the inbuilt microphones.
If this only had the drum machine and recording capability then I would be ecstatic. As it is this can be used as a sequencer, master-mixer, input controller and instrument to usb interface. I’m sure I’ll get more out of this as time goes by.
Highly recommended for the price.
The R8 is well made and simple to use. A lot of the features are easily accessed via buttons and those that aren’t are pretty easy to find. The R8 is intuitive to use and the accompanying manual is easy to read and well indexed. The manual is a proper paper one too! So much better than a PDF. I’m particularly impressed with how easy the loop function is to use, and the ability to magnify the waveform is very handy. I’ve also used the R8 with a mic and guitar and both work well.
All in all the Zoom R8 is easily worth the 5 stars I’ve given it. If you’re looking for a straightforward device that will serve your home studio requirements you need look no further!
First of all, the sound quality is excellent, particularly when you employ the mastering effects to give your recordings a final gloss. The great thing about the recording process is what at first appear to be limitations to the capabilities of the R8 can so easily be overcome with just a modicum of ingenuity. For instance each rhythm pattern requires a dedicated track. However once you’ve sorted your arrangement you can mix down and free up the previously used tracks. You can even record the whole rhythm sequence as a separate project and import it into your song. The free assignability of files to tracks makes the whole thing almost endlessly flexible. Similarly, you will search in vain in the manual and the menus for a “copy and paste” option. However, this job will be done for you by using the loop function and the track sequencer. Tracks can also be trimmed so there is really no need for external editing.
I’ve experimented a bit with using the R8 as an interface with the supplied Cubase programme. Frankly I found this aspect a bit redundant as everything I want and need can be done much more easily by just using the black box as a stand alone. These days the affordability of high capacity SD cards makes this type of machine really come into its own. You can play around pretty much to your heart’s content without having to bother unduly about freeing up card space.
The R8 is ideal for pros who want to create high quality demos and those of us who are rather less pro but want to create impressive sounding recordings for family and friends. The only real limit to the R8’s capabilities is the user’s own talent and imagination.
