The 8mm film scanner is easy to set up and use but some films are a problem. The smaller reels work well but some of the longer reels suffer from a lot of jerking that means you have to abandon the recording. Just have to keep trying.

I inherited my parents’ collection of 8mm films which they had taken in the 1960s and I have been hoping to find a machine which would enable me to convert them to digital. This is it and it has done the job for me. It isn’t exactly cheap but the old family films are invaluable to me and I feel that I have got reasonable value for money. You need to be patient, and find out by trial and error how to achieve the best results as the manual is basic. It is worth investigating the videos which users have posted online for guidance, but I have still found that my own experience of using the kit has been essential to arrive at the best results. I am still looking for the ideal software to assist with editing, but Shotcut is free to download and has helped improve the quality of the digital output from the Wolverine digitiser.

A great piece of tool. I have been converting 80 year old films and am astounded by the results and the ease of operation.

Golden Review Award: 50 From Our UsersI am 66. I have around 8 hours worth of family movies filmed mainly by my dad on 8mm from when I was very young until I was a late teenager. I tried projecting on to a white wall in a darkened room and recording on a top quality DSLR. So-so results plus needed cropping using a video edit app to get rid of fuzzy edges. I tried sending a reel to a proper 8mm film to DVD transfer specialist. Expensive and not much better quality than my “recording off the wall” efforts. I spent years then wondering how best to transfer these films so I can pass on these to my family but did nothing! Finally I saw this machine on Amazon for 360. Not cheap, but I thought I would give it a go. I carefully read all the reviews before ordering and felt the positives were better than the negatives. So I took the plunge and the machine has arrived and I have started transferring films. The first tests I did were using one single 50ft reel of Standard 8mm shot in 1962. This was the same film that I had both recorded by DSLR from projecting off the wall and that I had sent to the professional film to DVD specialist. The difference was significant! The film transferred on this “Digital Movie Maker Scanner” was sharper than the other attempts, correctly framed with no soft edges and perfectly exposed. It does take time however. 4 minutes of 8mm film (50ft) takes over half an hour to transfer – because each frame is individually scanned. Utterly worthwhile. I have looked again at the negative reviews about this machine and I suspect that a number of those have been due to not fully reading the instructions. Also, issues with longer (spliced together) reels are probably down to bad splicing originally rather than a fault with the design of this machine. Before attempting a transfer, I strongly suggest the user should manually check the film to be transferred for dodgy or broken splices! That is what I have done an I have had no issues.

I say again, better quality than professional transfers or “film off the wall” home transfers. Slow, but easy to do. Please read the instructions carefully. Not cheap, but if you want to transfer hours of film then good value for money.

I am scanning family holiday 8mm cine films. When scanning the monitor/viewer seems over bright but is perfectly exposed on playback.
Although not wishing to take your expectations too high bearingin mind how small the original image is, I must say I was agreeably surprised at the quality. It was great to bring back those lovely image for the family.

I successfully and easily resurrected over 40 cin films from the late 50s onwards and uploaded to YouTube for my family to enjoy. It’s been a great success and the quality is way better than the original whilst maintaining that cin feel.

It hasn’t always been straightforward but inevitably this can be fiddly when dealing with such fragile source material. Make sure you fit the film through all three clips correctly and it works well, allowing for occasional film jamming but that isn’t the fault of the machine.

Arrived in perfect condition and as described.
Interestingly there is a typo on the cover of the “user manua(l)” which at first felt suspicious, but the rest turned out to be as described.
    Glad I bought it.

Had to buy a new 7 inch take up reel, the description says it can copy from 7 inch (and I had a few to do) but it only came with a 5 inch take up reel. Not the easiest to set up, the diagram printed on the side does not actually represent the way the film actually travels, and the two WHITE guide tags are in fact BLACK! Also, if you want to rewind the film back onto the original reel the same way it was at the start, you must DISREGARD the instructions, and place the film to the BACK, not the front as the instructions say.
Otherwise, has done what I needed and digitised my 8mm films as required, Picture quality is as good as the old film can provide I guess. Now I just need to get my head around the editing software.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI had to return the first machine because there was a problem with it. Amazon were great about the return and issued a refund.
I ordered another one and it works beautifully (once you get to grips with it). Loading the film into the scanning gate is a bit fiddly but ok once you get the hang of it, and the various tools like frame width and alignment work very well.
In addition you will almost certainly need a film splicer and adhesive because old splices and damaged sprocket holes can be problematical. These can be found readily second hand on line. I was very lucky and got a really nice Dixons Pyramid unit and a bottle of Kodak liquid adhesive.
Be warned, I did not leave the unit running unattended simply because of possible problems caused by the films (quite old) themselves which had damaged sprocket holes and breakages, however one complete 7″ reel did go through flawlessly.
The results are adequate but obviously won’t be HD due to the limitations of the films and cameras used, but Super 8mm are very definitely better than Standard 8mm.
You will also probably want to edit the resulting files (mp4), so an additional video editor is a likely requirement.
All in all I was very impressed with what this relatively cheap unit was capable of and have no hesitation in recommending it.

All in all I was very impressed.

Golden Review Award: 29 From Our UsersI was all ready to return this after a few failed attempts but I stuck with it and tried again and again til I managed to get it working.

A lot seems to be down to the film itself as I’ve got great results from some, and yet other films which appear to be exactly the same type and format struggle to give a stable image. The frames can get stuck for no apparent reason which leads me to think that the sprocket mechanism is not well made and for a few pounds more the manufacturer could have produced a better device to give more reliable and consistent results.

For me it’s worked best with standard8 film and less reliably with super8. Having said that 80% of the super8 film I’ve put through it has come out well, with other films giving good results after a 2nd or 3rd attempt at capturing them and some just not working well at all. I did make sure to fully wind and rewind the films before starting the copying process to avoid any drag caused by films left tightly wound onto their spools for the last 40 years.

Overall this is a good device which I wish was better, but the enjoyment of memories from a lifetime ago are worth the effort to recover them.

Golden Review Award: 80 From Our Usershave converted 8mm and super 8 cine film and all is very good – have used big 7 inch reels and they worked fine – it’s worth reading the instruction book about adjusting frame size plus left and right to get the film perfect – very impressed with quality lots better than trying to film with a projector ! This model is different to others on Amazon they look the same but are not! so i would advise you to get this model as it works well

Very good does the job perfectly

Golden Review Award: 88 From Our UsersI have digitised a few reels of old 8mm film, and they are really fantastic looking. I am looking forward to converting all of my parents home videos, they will be surprised.

As far as converting what I have done thus far, the default exposure settings have been optimal. Hopefully all of the films that I still have to do are just as simple. A fully automated machine, Frame-by-Frame Digitising for HD Conversion – Converts 8mm and Super 8 movies into MPEG-4 (MP4) digital movie files at 1080P/ 30 fps.

This is compatible with my pc and supports video transfer straight to it. That means you are able to backup or save the scanned video very easily. Then you’ll be able to playback the scanned video with the built-in full colour LCD screen or directly project onto your television with the included video out TV cables.

All in all the unit is very easy to use and the output image is pretty good. Quality of the output image does depend on the quality of the film to be converted. For the purpose of preserving home movies, this did a great job. I converted a few film and it all went well. It takes about 30min to convert 3 min of film, do don’t expect it to be instant.

    Works So Well

Golden Review Award: 90 From Our UsersThis machine takes some getting used to, but it’s quite straight forward after that. Threading the film under the 3 lugs in the gate is not as easy as it sounds! In poor light, it’s difficult to see what you’re doing, and more often than not, you manage to get the film under two of the lugs; then the film pops out again, as you master the third lug! You have to persevere.
Copying a standard 8 or super 8 silent film is not a quick process. A full 5″ spool of film takes about 80mins to scan – once the film is laced correctly. The quality of the captured image is reasonably good, considering the age of some of the films – with no apparent ‘hot spots’ or flaring. Perhaps at a later stage if the image is blown up onto a large TV or with the use of a projector, the result may prove a trifle disappointing.
If the SD card that has captured the images is processed on a movie editing suite either on a PC or MAC, it is possible to reduce the running speed of the film to its proper speed of 16fps or 18fps.
I was initially a bit startled at the display counter reading when first switched on, as it showed a reading of 00092 (and not zero). However, I gather from a kind customer, that this number is something to do with ‘post build testing’. Let’s hope so!
Certain sections of the instruction booklet tend to be ambiguous and open to misinterpretation – so be careful! The worst example is in re-winding the film after scanning. If you press the ‘OK’ button in the incorrect sequence, then the scanner starts recording again (albeit nothing at all) and the counter increases to the next number!! (although the film does re-wind, but not very quickly)
The machine is not very heavy, so care is needed when lacing up film, as there is a tendency for the machine to tilt forward slightly; but everything is quite stable when scanning.
Certainly recommended, despite the aforementioned reservations.

Golden Review Award: 83 From Our UsersI’ve set up a business! A very loverly business.. a business that helps people to remember the good old times! I convert old movies to digital .. however, someone asked if I could convert an old 8mm film into digital format! I said no.. I now say yes!!!!

It’s so easy to use and the quality is fantastic! Really impressed and very happy with this purchase!

    Easy to use!

Golden Review Award: 88 From Our UsersThe film scanner actually is easy to use and this kit has been useful for converting our old films from the past into digital (sd card). There are 2 options on the bottom (switch) and you can go from super film or 8mm whichever you use. Then near the screen, there are function buttons there and that’s pretty much all you need to actually control this. It comes out well and the video format is mp4 which is supported on pretty much all modern devices out there right now. The films you can use are 3mm, 5mm and 8mm which gives you plenty of flexibility.

Golden Review Award: 84 From Our UsersSo far so good converted around 34 minutes of my 40 year old cine film both 8 and super 8. I will shortly be converting our 60 year old films.
I like this machine which I consider well built, simple to use with good menu options easy to understand allows fine tuning of image, exposure, positioning and zoom in capability.
I have run both single reels of 3 minutes super 8 and 3 minutes 40 second 8 plus my 8 inch spliced reel of 24 minutes and ran through with ease without interruption across splices, feed was consistent.
    Machine stays cool.
The image produced in MP4 to memory card is good and compared to a family member who had their cine film professionally converted I feel the image this machine produced is around 40/50% better.
A little experimentation with the menu options produced the best image by increasing exposure, positioning and slight zoom of image.
I then used my video editing software, a market leader well known brand beginning with CB, which further enhanced the image to a good standard almost equal to modern digital film.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this machine for home use. If you have a lot of cine films like our family makes financial sense to buy rather than use a company to convert with the added benefit you protect your precious films.
It should be noted this machine does make a certain amount of acceptable mechanical noise as the film feeds through and each 3 minute clip takes around 30 minutes to convert. These two points do not detract, I consider this machine excellent for family use to convert our precious memories and preserve for future generations.
I will be producing DVD’s and digital files for all family members to have.

Golden Review Award: 84 From Our UsersI live when purchasing some unit it comes with all parts which required , on this one it came with memory card and lens cleaning equipment, weakly nice touch.
Unit is very simple and easy to operate, it’s menu very user friendly.
Best way to invest once and avoid paying for others to convert my films. Now I can do whenever I want and how many I want. Even can start evening some extra cash for helping others with converting.
Overall very nice converter which very simple and easy to use, no extra complicated process. So far very happy with quality and conversions picture colours.

Golden Review Award: 79 From Our UsersI already had a converter up and running and have done in a while, what started out as a quick conversion of some old family film turned into lots of friends and family wanting them done and then onto friends of friends to find out that i was actually being paid to do this.

I’m now at the point that additional capacity was needed.

This one is much the same as my previous model, it converts the film straight onto an SD card which i can then upload onto my PC for additional improvements or just a straight digital conversion. It comes with the SD card which is perfectly fine for use, i’ve had no corruption issues so far, and it includes a small screen where you can playback the video directly on the scanner.

As a tip, what i’ve done is add on the option to have the files sent digitally to people as most now prefer this than a physical copy, cheaper for me and for them.

Overall, it’s a workhorse and i couldn’t be without it now.

Golden Review Award: 133 From Our Users15/02/2021:

    Edito: 21/02/2021
He recibido la maquina nueva, y la he probado 5 dias.
    Seguir informando.
