I will be adding these all over my house hopefully.
Smart control of heating systems was raised in a recent catch-up with some former work colleagues. That got me thinking. After some googling, I happened upon Tado. The reviews I saw were very positive with ease of install was a strong point. I took the plunge and ordered a wired thermostat starter kit, an add-on wired thermostat and 7 smart thermostaric radiator valves. This was to control temperatures in downstairs rooms and have the ability to turn on and off heating upstairs (second wired thermostat).
Installation was effortless. The instructions for the wired thermostat were a breeze to follow. Likewise, fitting the thermostatic valves to replace the original thermostatic control units was dead easy.
We’ve have the Tado system running for a few weeks now and are massively impressed on how well it performs. Before, we turned the heating on and off based on how hot the Living Room felt, notwithstanding having mechanical thermostatic valves on all radiators. The previous downstairs wired thermostat was at the end of the hall and unaware of air temperatures elsewhere downstairs. Often times we were enduring 25 C+ living room temperatures with an open fire and central heating both pumping in heat.
Now with Tado installed, the heating is left on continuously and, thanks to the Rado smart radiator valves, the temperature is regulated to a constant, comfortable 22C. We can also turn off rooms when they are not being used with ease on the Rado app. That would not have happened in the past as it was too much hassle to go to rooms and turn the thermostatic valves to the off position.
We are so impressed with its performance, that we’ve ordered a further 6 radiator thermostatic valves to control the upstairs radiators.
Final comment – we wish we’d known about this technology before the current energy price crisis and were able to take full advantage over the past year of hight energy costs. Final final comment, our three kids are equally impressed by what they’ve seen and are committed to going down the same route.
Can’t recommend this enough.
This was simple to install and works just as required. Allows remote changing of the temperature and looks discreet.
I can’t comment on the installation as a gas engineer did this. The app is very easy to set up and use. Features I like: Away from home mode (detects when you leave the house and return), detects an open window, being able to easily regulate the temperature from my phone whilst home or away is great.
These were bought to add to our existing Tado set up so were easy and straightforward to set up and install. The package arrived well packaged and with all items with factory seals etc. intact. We did not need any of the fixings, although supplied in the box. Setup and configured with minimal fuss. I have docked a star because Tado do not provide 24/7 support in the moment – but rather rely on delayed email chat service which is unacceptable in this and age. I needed help because one of the TRVs would not configurebut self resolved after a little while. Being a tech. Company offfering a connected product you shouldn’t have to wait days for help/support to reach out.
Surprised how easy this was to install for a DIY novice. App quite intuitive and easy to use but room for improvement.
Takes a while to get them installed and configured but once in place they fo save money on gas bill
These are the best things ever to control temperature in different rooms, handy feature lets you know if doors or windows are open too
Took a few minutes to install. Just screwed off old one and replaced new one. Didn’t need to use any adapters but they all seemed simple too.
App is easy to set up and easy to control.
Have ordered some more for downstairs already!
We had Danfoss radiator thermostats at home, and while they were also smart, ours weren’t smart enough, and changing settings was tricky. With the Tado smart radiator starter kit, it’s a totally different story, life has become so much easier with them. The only thing I can’t fully accept (or agree with) is that in the morning, Tado thermostats heat the room to a slightly higher temperature than the one you set. This, however, is a feature and not a bug, as their explanation is that this is their smart solution for saving heating costs: they heat up to a higher temperature but and then it is cooling down to the temperature set in the app and keeps the room warmer for a longer time.
The app is great, and we particularly like the ease with which you can control the thermostats when you need to air the room and open window/balcony door. We haven’t used the paid support feature, as there doesn’t seem to be any need for this at this point, even though it would add a bit more comfort: e.g. without the subscription, the app would only alert you that an open window is detected and you would then need to turn off the heat manually (if you want) via the app, whereas with subscription, you could set the thermostats to turn off heating automatically in such situations. Nice, but not really necessary.
All in all, the whole family is happy, because all of us (except for the cats who don’t have smartphones yet) can easily control the radiators from anywhere in the world.
Seems to control room temperature within a degree and a half which isn’t bad. Twisting and locking the head onto the base isn’t the easiest.
Bought these to add to my existing system. Easy to install, if your valves have M30 x 1.5mm threads you don’t even need adapters. Unfortunately I later realised I could’ve bought three of theses individualy from Amazon for far less than buying a pack of three together. Oops.
Had these for a couple of months across six radiators.
Pretty easy to fit considering I have a number of different manufacturer’s radiator thermostatic valves.
They have worked fairly reliably but the system has some unfortunate limitations.
If I could have waited another 12 months I would definitely have waited for Matter and (more importantly) Thread supported valves to be available (for longer distance meshed radio valve control).
First problem is you need a solid and reliable internet connection. If you lose your internet connection your valves go from intelligent to dumb. The heating schedule is stored in the cloud, not on your valves. The valve sits at its fixed setting until the Tado internet bridge finds the cloud again – and that does not always work without intervention.
Also the (non WiFi) radio connection between the internet bridge and the individual valves does not cover enough of my house for all the radiators I have. I have had to use a powerline internet extender to get the Tado internet bridge as central in the house as possible, so it can talk to as many valves as possible. Still not complete coverage.
There are good and bad with these TRV’s
The Good.
Found them all really easy to fit removing my existing radiator valves and all went on and configured to the Tado app and thermostat without any issues. With in the app they are easy to control and the information they offer is clear
However. As with all these types of valves its not always easy to judge the actual temperature of the room, because they are obviously sat right next to the radiator when they are heating they report a much higher temperature than the rest of a room. While they do have an offset to help with this its a bit of a balancing act to get this working in a favourable way.
Unfortunately unless you are using some other kind of smart home management it does make it hard to really control these 100% accurately without buying the external thermostat from Tado.
Sadly one of these remains rather expensive as a single unit and if end up requiring one for each room the cost of your smart heating soon starts to skyrocke
These literally open and close the rad valve depending on the setting and controlling each room independently means you don’t waste a load of gas heating rooms you are not in. Really easy to install and set up.
Clever gadgets but beware – you need:
– The Tado wi-fi hub
– Your radiator valve buttons to be working and free moving
I am rubbish at d.i.y and was worried about electrifying myself. The app instructions to install are great and I used it for this and the wireless starter kit. Installed both in under an hour. Very pleased with myself.
When I got these I’d already sent Tado photos of my existing valves. I was told I would need to use an adaptor to fit them.
20 minutes of confusion into the install and I realised they don’t need an adapter at all.
Tado needs to improve its processes.
The device itself is great.
Replaced Heatmiser underfloor controller with Tado wired remote as part of a project to bring the heating system into a complete Tado managed system. The Heatmiser units look good but are confusing to operate and not logical. Tado makes the process of swapping out one unit and replacing wait a Tado unit as simple as possible. The instruction guide you through the wiring process. This can be super daunting but take it one step at a time and take photos of each stage.
Once set up Tado now manages the heating via radiators, heating via water based underfloor and the hotter boiler. All in one app.
Although we currently have a Hive Thermostat controlling our heating system after reading lots of reviews, we decided to purchase the Tado thermostatic radiator valves.
Installed the Tado app on my smartphone and installation of the bridge and valves was simple. Minor issue with the bridge installation. The power cable is only 12 inches long. No problem if your router has a USB connection that you can use. My TalkTalk router did not, and the power cable was not long enough to stretch to the nearest 13A socket. Fortunately, I had a long USB cable which fitted into the supplied mains connector and was long enough to do the job. Installing the valves was very easy, again just followed the clear step by step instructions on the app to pair the devices and install. The installation of the 2nd valve would not complete and the Tado app showed a battery low fault on this valve. Why this should be so with the new batteries provided I have no idea but replacing the batteries cleared the problem and the installation completed. The battery low issue and the short power cable are the only reasons I have given 4 not 5 stars.
Setting up the schedules was easy via the app.
There are comments about the noise of the valves operating. The motor cycles for around 2 to 3 seconds as it opens or closes the valve and you can hear it. I would say the noise is very similar to a printer moving the head across the width of a sheet of paper. In a very quiet room such as a bedroom it may well be obtrusive but as it is such a short duration it will not stop us from installing them in the bedrooms. In rooms with normal day to day living noises going on then you probably will not notice the noise.
Up to now everything is working exactly as we expected and we will be replacing all of the old mechanical valves with Tado ones.
I decided to take the plunge after doing my research. I went or Tado based on the good reviews, apparent ease of installation and value.
I now just heat up the rooms/zones where I want or need the heat.
In the end I ended up with the starter kit and 9 Smart Radiator Valves and so the cost does add up when you need to purchase that many SRVs.
Installation of the actual wireless receiver/controller wasn’t that difficult but in my view is probably outside the knowledge of must DIYers unless you happen to have specific electrical knowledge or background. Fitting the SRVs is easy and I didn’t need to use any of the adapters which is a plus because some of them look a little odd and I’m not sure how well they would fit.
Besides that setting up everything through the app is very good. Defining different zones works a treat and you can have different heating schedules for each zone. The app/controller is actually clever enough to not turn on the boiler each time a single SRV calls for heat as that would be very inefficient and also bad for the pump and boiler etc. it tries to optimise this as much as possible which seems to work well.
I can also do manual overrides from the app, such as boosting the heat in all rooms or turning them all off. It also notifies me when I leave home asking me if I want to turn all the heating off the save energy. it’s a nice idea but when I leave home it doesn’t meant that everyone else has :). Perhaps Tado will improve this so that all home users can be tracked and also linked to specific heating zones. For example, when my daughter leaves for work, the apps could track this and just turn off the heating in her bedroom.
Anyway, great product and would definitely recommend.
Technical instal on rads and boiler is so, so well explainedworld class for a tech product.
These TRV’s are very good.
They actually work!
Easy to install and and connect to your home network and WiFi.
If you have more than 5 radiators in your house, these devises will reduce your heating usage and maybe give a return on investment within 5 years.
We are in love with Tado. The wired smart thermostat is the one that went in place of our wired combiboiler timer. This will turn the boiler on and off as needed, therefore making the rest.of the system work. Installation needs and expert gas/electrics technician. I wouldn’t advise to try and do it yourself, particularly if, as it was my case, Tado was unable to provide detailed instructions for that particular boiler. Even the technician that I had to find later on struggled with it, but got it in the end. I appreciate the difficulty resided in my combiboiler (Main Combi 30 HE). My advice: pay the extra 120 for the expert installer for this component of the system.
At home we had a timer to turn the heating on and off. It is connected to a combiboiler. Radiator valves were old and clunky. Temperature regulation in each room was ineffective and inaccurate. This system has let go of all that hassle. Installing the thermostatic valves was easy. It has all the necessary adapters to the different types of inlets. Now, the one tricky thing was installing the main wired smart thermostat, that is, the one that shuts the combiboiler on or off. For the system to be taken advantage of, you need the bridge that connects to your internet router, the valves for each of your radiators and the wired smart thermostat to switch the boiler on and off. When you buy it through Amazon, it asks whether you want an expert installer or not. I made the rookie mistake of saying no. Although the expert installer might not necessary for the radiator valves and internet bridge, it’s essential for the wired central smart thermostat!!! In the end, I paid the same for the gas/electricity technician to install it than I would have if I had selected it in first place. In any case, the system is magnificent. It is an ingenious integration of mechanics and electronics whilst keeping the house nice and cozy for us and our cats.
Install was fine. The app gave step by step instructions with pictures.
Pairing was easy, worked first time.
The app is pretty but a bit confusing. The thermostat controls are in one place, but the thermostat settings are somewhere different. And the history graphs were not working yesterday.
When the radiators turn on, they also turn on the underfloor heating. That is something the app should have asked during setup instead of just doing it.
Every time the heating comes on, it clicks like a physical Honeywell thermostat. Makes it feel less smart, and a bit annoying. Nests don’t do that.
The controls are a bit meh. They’re slow to use.
You have to touch a button to make the screen come on. I guess that’s to save batteries. Wish it had just used my existing wiring for power.
I don’t think guests will even figure out that it’s a thermostat, which is a minus in my book.
There’s also no way to lock it to prevent people fiddling with the temperature.
Not sure if I’ll keep it.
These things are a little pricey and I managed to get these on a special deal.
Having said that, they seem to be a good quality product. They come with various adapters but luckily mine replaced the originals without needing them.
Once the app is installed and main controller set up, adding these is easy with the step by step instructions.
I use HomeKit but most of the setting up is done via the app. The thermostats appear in HomeKit automatically a few minutes after setting them up in the Tado app so just be patient.
Now I have these all over the house it makes it so much easier to manage the heating in my house.
Easy to install, even with adapters and so far working very well.
Already noticing a difference in my heating bill
Usually all the radiators are on during the winter months even though just one room is occupied. Bought this and more smart trvs to better control the radiators before deciding if this was the system to go for. It was. Fantastic especially with the energy price increases.
Was worried about the installation of these as I have an upstairs and downstairs controlled system. However, the app that comes with this product allows you to select the brand you previously had installed and gives you step by step instructions on how to install the new one. it even comes with stickers to wrap around the wires so that you know which wire to install into the new system. The thermostat is a good size and very easy to manually use. The app is really easy to use and comes with loads of handy features to help us save money and keep the house warm.
Very simple and easy to use app, and great customer support from Tado.
Can schedule to heat the rooms I need when I need it, saving money on the bills. Nice reports with savings estimate. Alerts you when away or Windows are open.
Can integrate with Google Assistant and Home Assistant so you can do your automation without the need to pay for the Tado subscriptio

They work very well compared to other similarly priced Smart TRV. There are very well designed and connect to the Tado bridge like a dream. Slightly more expensive than some alternatives though worth the extra for sure!
Having moved to a big, old, cold house a few months ago, I looked into different possibilities for lowering my energy bill. Most cost tens of thousands of pounds. So, instead, I decided to go a different way, and seek greater visibility/control of how my heating budget is being spent.
Being a complete numpty when it comes to any form of DIY, I was nervous about how easy it would really be to install the kit. Initially I bought the Zigbee hub and valves, but after struggling for a few days with tiny instructions in pidgin English, I sent it back. However, I didn’t give up, and bought the Tado starter pack. Setup was so easy that even I could do it in a few minutes. Everything paired/connected/calibrated first time, and the interactive in-app setup procedure is incredibly easy to use. With each valve, you get half a dozen different adaptors to connect to your radiator, and one of them WILL fit whatever you have. The app makes control so easy, either by manually adjusting an individual room, or programming a schedule with multiple time segments and temperature. Alexa integration is seamless and is a big plus.
After a few days, I bought the four-pack of additional valves, and these are now installed and working too. I have 23 radiators in my house, so this will not be cheap, but I think it is definitely the way to go.
So they are a straight replacement for my old drayton trv4s, so didn’t need the numerous plastic parts supplied for other trvs. Simple to use and set up. Bit bulky compared to the old drayton valves. Seem to work fine with controller, early days but does seem to keep temperature to the max setting but I may need to read up on that and tweak. People at tado support answered some pre purchase question for me.
The system has already helped us be in more control of the home environment.
The rooms are more comfortable and it’s incredibly flexible.
We’re clearly saving money by having individual room tmperature plans and by using the geo fencing to remind us when we are away not to heat.
We’ve also found a significant area of heat loss in a bay window when we saw one radiator was working a lot more than others. That’s now been fixed as well.
There’s a bit of learning to do and once you’ve got it set up it’s great.
Loving this bit of kit however not sure on if you have one than one radiator in the room does this mean you have to put a thermostat on each radiator? And how would you use it appropriately? Would this be a waste of money?
I have decided to turn off one radiator if a room have two. Not sure if this approach is valid.
Replacing my old Honeywell thermostat with the Tado smart thermostat was easy, excellent instructions via the app.
Replacing thermostatic valve controls just as easy.
The change in heating control in my 3 story town house is incredible. After a few days, my daily gas use has reduced and the house temperature in each room that we use, is perfect.
Excellent products, I can not recommend enough!
I have a couple of Tado thermostatic valve actuators working successfully and have generally been quite happy with them. However yesterday I tried to add one to a recently installed Pegler Terrier III valve (see attached picture). The Tado product doesn’t work with this valve (or others in the Pegler Terrier range) although it does fit quite well. Tado support have confirmed it is not compatible and it would appear that the actuator does not reach the valve and there is no adapter. The solution is to fit an alternative valve.
To be fair to Tado they do mention this on their website although finding the compatibility information is a bit tricky.
Cannot say anything negative so far! Installation done completely via the APP – super and easy. Pairing of devices – immediately without any issues. The app exactly creates additional value to the product and I must say guys good job can create separate heating schedules per each room, per each day and timeframe. You can see precisely when it was in heating mode in nice graph. Also several modes and out of home mode is very great. Definitely recommended for buying. My little worry is how long the batter in thermovalves will last but about this I will write one more review later after this winter.
I bought these after doing a lot of research into the smart home thermostats. Tado seem to be the only ones that offer TRV’s that communicate with the wall thermostat. The thermostat was so easy to fit just follow the instructions on the app once you have the thermostats, it was only 2 wires in my install…It is important you check with Tado before purchase they will let you know if there products is compatable with your system. I got these on a offer on Amazon that was far cheaper than buying direct from Tado…watch out for the offers saved me a lot of money
Overall, five stars, because it works really well. For value, hard to say, but the outlay was significant in total for the system and it will be difficult to assess any savings made through Tado alone.
But I do like the system very much. Our old dumb thermostats were all defective and did not function as thermostats after 33 years, just simple on/off knobs. So replacing them with these smart valves was a revelation. Now the radiators are controlled properly, and accurately, with proper temperature sensing instead of vague, meaningless numbers on a dial.
At first I just installed seven new TRVs with the bridge, but two days later I added the smart wired thermostat to replace or dumb timer/thermostat. Now the control of the system is so much more refined. Any room can request the boiler to turn on, even if the main hall thermostat is already up to temperature. Switching from simple mains on/off relay to e-Bus control now means that there is a lot more intelligence to the heating operation all round.
I feel that Tado really puts us (well, me) back in control. I now know exactly what is going on with the heating and can fine tune room settings and insulation to maximise cost savings without sacrificing comfort. For a gadget nerd like me (or anyone else economically minded) this system is great.

For value, hard to say, but the outlay was significant in total for the system and it will be difficult to assess any savings made through Tado alone so I’ve given three stars. I’ve not used tech support and don’t care about Alexa integration, so three stars there simply because I have no opinion good or bad on that front.

Tutto funziona a dovere.
Aggiorner a breve.
Bought as a tester kit for a 500m2 building with 90cm thich stone walls that requires 5 heavy-dutyduty mesh routers to get a signal throughout.
Given the WiFi issues I was sceptical that it’s single dongle hub would allow me to connect to the outer reaches of the house.
Initial tests suggests that it does. When close to the hub temperature adjustment from the app to the device is instantaneous. In distant rooms it can take 30 seconds to 2 minutes before it registers a change you make on the app. But it does respond. That time lag is not an issue for usability from my perspective as even a wait of two minutes is not going to materially undermine the comfort and energy savings it will bring.
For me the question is whether it will still work when I have the maximum 25 devices connected (which I will have to have).
I also have to give a shout out to Tado technical support. I have considered many alternative smart TRVs and have asked technical questions to each company. Tado support was by far the best.
Great product, easy to set up and it works grea
This might be a lengthy review but hopefully will provide an insight into my less than successful experience.
I took some time looking at reviews of various smart heating systems before deciding on Tado. I spent 420 on 1 smart radiator starter kit, 1 smart thermostat and 3 smart radiator valves after consulting with Tado on the best setup for my home and required usage. I retained the hot water control via my existing programmer so didn’t need the extension kit.
The items are packaged in a style and branding not dissimilar to that of Apple and although are of a plastic finish seem reasonably robust
The online registration and system installation was easy and intuitive, and having a technical background I found it straightforward. I set up three zones, a living room with the smart thermostat and two smart radiator valves as recommended by Tado, a family room with 2 smart radiator valves on both radiators and 1 bedroom with a smart radiator valve. I didn’t want to invest in any more kit until I was sure that it did what Tado said it would.
Connection of the internet bridge and pairing of all the components was uncomplicated as was fitting the valves, only two needed the included adapters, (on Danfoss valves.)
I set the system up initially on the web interface and then downloaded the Tado App on to my iPhone. Programming the zones for different times and temperatures was simple to do either via the web interface or on the app.
So with everything programmed we woke up to a cold house the next morning. The boiler had only fired for a short period. The schedule was set to warm the bedroom and family rooms before the living room which isn’t used until afternoon. Manually starting the living room by increasing the set temperature above the actual recorded temperature then enabled the other zones to warm up in line with the set-point temperatures. Thinking this might have been a one-off I left it but it did the same the next day, cold house in the morning.
So it appears that the zone with the smart room thermostat in must be calling for heat before any other zone even though their smart radiator valves are calling for heat.
And this is where it all goes downhill with Tado support.
I tried throughout the day to call but was unable to get through, just a recording that all agents are busy and to try later (or leave a message.) So I emailed asking for help, and got a response saying that they had made changes to my system (I have no idea what, they didn’t say — and I couldn’t see any changes) to prevent the boiler short firing and not reaching full temperature on first starting and to let them know if it didn’t work. It didn’t so I replied by email but heard no more. I tried ringing but just got the same recorded message.
However, they sent me a satisfaction request in dealing with the problem even though they hadn’t and still haven’t fixed it — unbelievable. I now have a response saying they are still dealing with the request for help which will take a few days more.
This is not good enough Tado — I’m a new customer with a zone configuration that you recommended and it doesn’t work.
Once the system does decide to start up then generally it works fine during the day although there are noticeable variations in the room temperatures before the system turns on the heating again so you can feel the temperature drop and then increase, i.e it doesn’t maintain a comfortable constant temperature. You also need to check the actual room temperature with a separate thermometer agains the Tado set point temperatures and then adjust the offset on which ever device is set to monitor the room temperature.
I haven’t tried the Geolocation feature yet or the relationship with Apple Homekit as I’d just like to get it working.
So in summary, installation set up, programming and control in principle, very good. Functionality not so good Problem resolution and support poor.
Tado if you read this I’d like a resolution please (i.d. 426017) so I can return all the items to Amazon for a refund within 30 days if you can’t fix this for me.
EDIT- UPDATE.
Tado have now fixed the problem remotely. I have therefore revised my rating.
The thing about tado is that they have a feel of a small company that is trying to improve, the app and software is regularly updated and their helpdesk is not bad, which in itself is a rare thing. It’s not cheap but like that it is non-google as I think I give google enough info already!
The only downside is their manuals and installation guide – they have a questionnaire so they send you the right manual, if that fails you have to call up – give people a backstop and put all installation guides on line. If you have circuit breakers and an existing thermostat you can do the installation yourself.
