Good sound. Meant for the opposite of noise cancellation so don’t buy them for that. Read the description.

These are designed primarily for musicians who need to block out outside noise such as when recording vocals/instruments.
As such they do cancel out sound to a reasonable level.
The overall sound is good as per usual from AKG although exhibit the usual closed back drawbacks.
They have a bit of a mid range boost so if buying for mixing you should consider this.
I wouldnt recommend for mixing or generaly listening to music although this is possible, but for tracking reasons they suit the purpose well.
I love AKG products however, I do have a negative. The hole for the ear inside the ear cusiions is a bit small so they press on my ears and do feel uncomformatble quite quickly but other users experiences may vary.

Needed a second set of ‘phones’ and was originally happy with my AKG K92, so went for similar. My AKG K92 in fact were also starting to distort, so was initially hesitant in purchasing another set from AKG. I need not have worried. These are far superior in terms of quality and depth of tone. More comfortable too. My guitar now sounds how I hoped it would through the PC. Very happy. Highly recommended.

People can spend up to fifty grand on headphones, I can’t but for a lot less you can purchase these wonderful AKGs. Comfortable, a choice of earpads, two cables, detachable, one coiled and a jack adapter in the box. They sound great, mellow and laid back. I took off the pleather pads, I found them stuffy and hot. I put on the other pair and there was a huge improvement in comfort an sound. There is hardly any sound bleed from these semi open headphones, I thought it was going to be significant but its not. These are a great choice for me.

They will not suit everyone ….

To my ears there perfectly brilliant, some say they lack bass, no they do not,you hear the true recordings .

Bargain at this price point, there is to much over hype with expensive set ups . AKG prove you don’t need to pay excessive amounts to hear good music . If I had to score it would be 8/10

Best headphones I’ve ever had. Great design, fit to head, super comfy and they sound amazing. Obviously you can buy more professional studio cans but for this price you can’t go wrong. Oh and also they have a mini xlr connection for the cable so when the wire enevitable fails or gets chewed by your rabbit or dog or whatever you can replace the cord and not have to buy brand new cans which all headphones should have to reduce landfill etc. Just get these!

The sound quality is great for a 50 pair of headphones.
They feel like marshmallows on your ears.
The cable and headphones are extremely durable due to me smacking the headphones around and running over the cable with my seat while showing little to no signs of wear.
They will never fall off your head while still not feeling tight.

I ALWAYS used the Sony MDs, but these were half the price and I finally succumbed! Very comfy, must say! Sound? For me? (Old ears?) Not as clear as the Sony MDR-7506s, but, good for the Internet? (why on EARTH would ANYone watch TV these days!!)
Would I buy again? Yep, for Internet etc,,,, but, i must say, I miss my sony’s!! (3rd pair, why the AKGs? cos an ear, again, went dud on the Sony’s)

Bought these for my grown up son. He’s had a lot of headphones, he is serious about music so, needed good sound reproduction. He also needed them to be robust! He has broken a lot of jack plugs in his life! These headphones have a combi small / large jack plug, adjustable head band and good bass response with good sound quality up and down the range. He has had them for longer than any other pair and not wrecked them yet, this IS an endorsement!

These are my first open/semi-open back headphones so I don’t have much to compair them to, but they seem well made and are comfortable. The cables are high quality but the twisted, telehophe style one does transmit quit a lot of noise when it runs on clothes.
The sound, to my armature ears is clear, crisp and bright with a little drop of in bass compaited to the closed back headphones I was using.
Where they do shine is in gaming. They’re lighter and have a much more convincing sound stage than my ASUS/ROG headset. No mic in these though so they only really work in single player games but they do sound fantastic and very natural

After a previous pair of headphones broke, I needed a replacement and these seemed the ideal choice. Having been bitten by the “audiophile” bug many years ago I was already familiar with this brand and model, but have put up with far inferior headphones previously.

In the box is a straight (uncoiled) headphone lead, a pair of headphones, and a 3.5 to 6.4 adapter.

The headphones themselves are quite light, but sturdily constructed and are “semi-open” in design, so there are openings in the earpieces to “vent” the sound.

Lighter and airier in presentation than my previous headphones, they don’t need to be cranked up so loud, but deliver a very nice presentation of whatever music you listen to through them.

    Well worth the money. Recommended

These are without doubt the BEST earphones to start your journey to becoming a professional record producer. They were for me and even though I still have about 10 reference pairs sitting beside me ranging from Munitio’s to Grado’s to AKG Quincy Jones Signature’s, I always actually check my speaker mixes in these during recording and mixing as they are RUTHLESSLY mean. If you can learn to make the Bass sit perfectly on these as perfectly as it’s appearing from your monitors, you’re heading on the right direction.
Make of this what you will, but I guess you’ll ignore me and probably think they suck as have a flat bass response.
Mix into them and wait for reactions on your mix.

Neutral, beautiful sound. There is the correct amount of everything present, in an airy, lightweight, comfortable design. There is the correct bass presence, not bloated or overblown. If you want to add anything to these magnificent headphones, and they don’t need anything to be honest, but if you add a cheap tube-preamp with some vintage Mullard, GE or Sylvanian tubes, it’ll give you a smile from ear to ear!

I bought this to replace the same product that I bought in 2007 and have just damaged beyond repair. I believe the 2007 version was made in Austria whereas this current model is made in China. The construction and look & feel is identical. The sound response is very similar – same “flat” bass, which may seem a bit weak in some circumstances but is just what you need for mixing or hifi applications.

I have noticed that the new version appears to produce a louder overall output from mobile devices. This was a slight drawback to the old model – which (even when new) needed maximum output from an ipod, phone or tablet to get a listenable level. The levels from the new model in the same application are much louder (60% volume is now more than enough).

I cannot do an A/B comparison as my old model is broken. However, my impression is that there is a little less high-end clarity in the new model that the old. I think the drivers must be different and therefore may not quite be as high performance as the older model.

For the money it is still a good buy and will suit my purposes for home hifi and home studio mixing work / referencing.

I have a pair of the original 40 year old Austrian built Sextett K240’s with an impedance of 600 ohms. These modern Chinese built K240’s are equally as good and provide stunning sound reproduction although the sound stage is not quite as large. Due to the much lower impedance of these modern headphones they are considerably easier to drive and subsequently louder, easily too loud! Comfort whilst wearing glasses for me is excellent. Both cables are excellent, I would though point out the coiled 5 metre version is what you would utilise for connecting to a mobile telephone as the real length is about 1.2 metres. Use the 3 metre version for home listening. Both earpad versions are good, I do though prefer the”pleather” for no more reason that I am not a fan of velour. I find the value for money truly outstanding.

I bought these headphones looking for more base and depth to the music I was listening to. I was initially disappointed as I didn’t get the sound quality I expected. Best I can describe was that the levels, especially in the lower range were washed out.

I then researched using a preamp instead of using the headphone socket directly. I bought one of the DragonFly series preamps and the difference is unbelievable. I constantly switched between the DragonFly and the headphone outlet for different test tracks and I was shocked at the difference.

My advice to anyone buying these is to investigate the use of a preamp/DAC to really get the most out of the headphones.

I bought these after reading good reviews about over-ear, semi-open headphones. I wanted something that would reduce hot ear problems and tight fitting cups. Anyway, the sound is great, the price, more than reasonable but the big disappointment is that they fit too tight, are uncomfortable after an hour and my ears get very hot! I’d failed to understand what self-adjustment meant, i.e. that the phones adjust to your head and not you adjusting them! Consequently, as my head is small, I’m on the tightest setting and cannot alter it. Product support were unable to help.

I bought these to replace an old pair of Sony headphones. At first there was no discernable difference between those and the AKGs. However, now the drivers are loosening up (about 8 – 10 hours listening), the sound quality is incredible. I have heard sounds in some recordings I didn’t know were there. Vocals in particular are often a revelation; there is a more raspy and breathy quality to some songs. The bass response is solid and deep – sibilants are very realistic and not harsh. For the money I fail to see what could better these. Can’t recommend them highly enough!

    Hi all,

I have been using these headphones since 2014. Not for studio use, but for gaming. Over the years I have enjoyed the sound quality, simply so that I can enjoy the moving pieces of audio art.

The only issue I have with these headphones is, the comfort… After 8 hours of gaming, my ears occasionally get sore. But not to the point where I need to stop.

As for volume, fantastic, I can listen to my music at full volume. Feeling like I am a part of the music. It can be loud enough that my wife complains she can hear my music.

Highly recommend, you may need to replace the cable after 5 years of 4-12 hour daily use.
    Please enjoy =D

I’ve owned these headphones for 6 years now and I am still so happy with them. The sound stage is airy and wide and the details have clarity too. For example the little percussive clicks and claps of Thriller album to Axls hidden piano parts of Use Your Illusion rock albums (yes they are there) as well as being warm on aggressive metal lalbums ike Rust in Peace. I never usually listen to hip hop but I listened to a song called Love Lockdown on these yesterday which features a deep 808 bass sample at that really comes across well on these headphones even though it’s like 60 – 100 htz bass sample.

For mixing. I’m a guitarist who is in too home recording guitar instrumentals and i have mixed songs on this, however I’ve been left disappointed when transferring the song to other Hi Fi systems but please don’t be put off by that. I think the issue is with me. I simply cannot mix with headphones, some people can counter conoensate for good imaging and tonal balance with headphones, but I can’t so I ended up buying HS7 monitors for mixing.

For home listening these sound amazing, flat response, clean and dynamic. Also they are semi open so best of both worlds.

I was going to purchase a new set of proper audiophiles headphones to replace these but now I’ve decided to stay with them and simply purchase a quality USB DAC for them instead, so my mobile phone drives them to their full dynamic potential. Although they are only 50olms anyway and can be easily driven by phones I just want to add a bit more quality

Had these for 6 years and still happy

I have two sets of these, one for my Bass guitar and the other for my wife’s electronic keyboard, so that we can practice without annoying each other! They are comfortable to wear and reproduce the sound clearly and without any colouring or boosting of certain frequencies which you might get with headphones intended for music playback. The cable is detachable which means you can replace it if it gets worn, or is too long (which it is for my Bass ). They also handle the low frequencies well which was essential for me.

The headphones are excellent for home listening, and can have a good volume even connected to mp3 players or smartphones.

A negative note is the stability in the head, the headphone socket although very comfortable is not very firm, if you wear them while playing an instrument they often tend to slip away from the head.

They’re very nice, flat headphones. Been researching to get these for my boyfriend’s birthday. He loves them, it’s great for him to mix audio with. These are open back though so for public I wouldn’t recommend. I also had to buy a set of replacement muffs because the ones that came with these came already broken off. However overall they’re brilliant.

Just a good reliable set of earphones, honest sound and comfortable, I am on my own, so I also needed to hear what was going on in the outside world to. These are perfect, just the job. Bit of a bonus they look pretty good to. Cant hear the Baby next door, he cant hear me. But I can hear my alarm striking Pub’a’clock Perfect.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe AKG K271 is easy to use but doesn’t suffer for its simplicity. Both sides are made of plastic and reinforced with a metal ring at the edge, while the headband is made of imitation leather and is supported by two metal hangers. The ear cups enclose the ears and offer sufficient horizontal and vertical play so that the headphones fit snugly to the head. At first glance, the AKG K 271 MKII doesn’t seem to be that unusual, but it does have one or two hidden treats. For example, instead of a conventional jack plug, the left earpiece has an AKG typical mini XLR connector for the two supplied cables, making them interchangeable.
Another special feature of the K271 MKII is the self-adjusting headband, as well as an automatic switch-off, which mutes the headphones when they are removed. When the earpiece is put on, a rubber band at the lower ends of the headband gives way so that it slides upwards on the frame until the auricles sit on the ears. At the same time, a small switch on the outside of the left shell is released so that the audio signal can pass through. If you put the receiver down, the switch is pressed again and silence reigns. Although this is a nice gimmick, it is also one of the breaking points of the headphones. Otherwise, there is nothing to criticise as the earpieces and shells are firmly connected, offering a robust overall impression.

very good mid-range studio headphone with auto power off and auto size adjustment.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe AKG K240 is probably the best headphone in the 50 area money can buy. Because of the long production run and moving production to China they are an incredible bargain. Before judgement can begin it needs about a week break in period, listen to them before this by all means but don’t be critical. Will it suit everyone? No absolutely not, they are listed as semi open well that may be but they leak sound loudly into the environment you are in so may disturb others in same room. Let’s get one thing out of the way the K240 is a difficult headphone to drive! Yes it will produce sound from a mobile phone or iPod, but such devices are completely incapable of revealing what the headphone is capable of they need a dedicated amplifier even some receiver integrated amp socket won’t cope. The reason for this is the 55 ohm load and 91db. The K240 was never conceived with mobile audio in mind it was designed for studio use who have equipment with the ability to drive it. For mobile devices look for a headphone with a 32ohm load with 100+dB efficiency. So is a 50 headphone worth all this trouble? For me and many others absolutely yes. The K240 has a mesmerising mid range with a tight image that I can only describe as beguiling and addictive, this does not mean they have no bass, they do produce bass and it’s not difficult to follow Ray Brown’s upright bass on we get requests or the bass on Robbie Robertsons somewhere down the crazy river, but it never interferes with what’s going on in the mids, vocals, guitars etc. The highs are good, cymbals, triangles etc sound good. Sound stage is not particularly wide it bearly escapes the earpieces but it’s good enough to place where instruments are but don’t expect a K702 outside the head experience but at 50 how could you. The cable is detachable via a mini XLR connection with many custom cables available to tweak sound to your liking. The difference between the Studio and the MkII is only the silver finish and choice of earpad velvet or pleather and straight and coiled cable on the MkII. Stick K240’s on your head put on Sarah McLachlan’s mirror ball and the world will just fade away

I have owned a pair of these for over a year and they are used for hours everyday. They are thrown about, the cable is pulled, and they have suffered lots of abuse. They refuse to stop working. They are without doubt the most sturdy cans I have ever owned. As for sound quality, you can’t go wrong with 271’s. They are pretty flat and deliver a decent roomy sound and not artificial bass or boxiness. An all round great set of cans.

  42. Erika Brooks Adickman says:

     United Kingdom

Sound quality: Haven’t done a full battery of tests, but based just on listening to them bass response seems to roll off quite dramatically but the soundstage is nice and open, and mid/high end response is crisp without being overdone. Not suitable for mixing/mastering, but for general use they’re fine.

Build quality: It’s all plastic, but feels quite sturdy, and the mini-XLR means that if (like me) you have a habit of forgetting you’re wearing them and standing up and yanking them off the cable is replaceable if you damage it. There’s an odd design choice that means the strap retainers rub on the outside of the speaker housing and slowly scrapes away the top layer; it literally just needed a 2-3mm spacer somewhere to avoid it so it seems really bizarre to leave it as-is.

Comfort: Very light, with a good balance of tension which means they’ll stay put without putting too much pressure on your ears — I’ve worn them for an 8-hour stretch without any discomfort. However, I have long slightly wayward hair and it quite regularly gets tangled in the spring mechanism particularly if take them off and rest them on the back of my neck so I have to make sure I tie my hair back if I’m going to be using them.

Overall opinion: As long as you’re not into heavy pounding bass or looking for a pair of reference headphones for mastering then these are pretty good for the price — they’re not perfect and a small redesign of the strap mounts is sorely needed, but other than that I’m happy with my purchase.

These headphones are for discernable ears, that enjoy the neutral sounds over over synthetic tops and bass.
It’s quality takes time to adjust to, but if listening to classical, accostic, jazz music you learn to appreciate the instruments and the pan arrangement, as if you were there.
Build quality is retro but sturdy…, I find myself challenging the sound quality and am listening to way more classical music….
    Have not yet been disappointed.
But if your looking for bass and high ends these are definitely not for you…
In addition, have had these headphones for few weeks and had cable issues where lost sound in one of the cans.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersAfter much research, I came up with these as my main studio reference headphones. Having had to downsize my studio due to an injury, I can no longer use my nearfield monitors as much as before and have to rely on headphones much more than before.
If you want a set of headphones that sound awesome to sit and listen to your music collection through, then these may disappoint.
But, if you want to be able to hear every nuance of your mix, knowing that, whatever speakers your music is played on, it will sound as it should be, these are exactly what you need.
Many headphones are heavy on the bass, a bit “muddy” in the mid range and high on the top end – just like pressing the “loudness” button on your hi-fi. Lovely to listen to but useless for mixing.
These faithfully reproduce what you put into them, without colouration or distortion – exactly what you need to produce a professional result. They have non of that lack of distinction in the mid range found in so many others in this price range.
There very comfortable for prolonged sessions and EXTREMELY light.
If I had a criticism, it would be that, being open backed, ambient noise can filter through somewhat – but it’s a small price to pay for all the other benefits.
    UPDATE.
Having now used these for some time, I’ve hit a snag – and had to upgrade.
I stand by most of the above BUT mastering “fuller” orchestral mixes, it gets very “muddy” in the lower ranges. I can only describe it as “anything above the cellos sounds great”. Once you bring in the lower ranges, the whole mix goes “muddy” and I have to switch to near field monitors.
These are great for a basic engineering mix but, for mastering -they’re simply not up to it.
I think before damning these, for the price, they’re still amazing.
Fine for demos – not so much for mastering.
