Has all the features and functions you need as part of a home music studio.
Although the unit I received came with a small defect – one of the keys is a bit slanted to the side, the overall quality is excellent.
The software included is pretty flexible and you can assign just about any midi function to any key.
For the price, this is a very good value and it does all I could ask.
The only thing I could not figure out is how to change the midi channel from the device itself, something I can do in a much older M-Audio keyboard.
Calidad buena.
Can’t say much except that I love this keyboard and the keys are just right for me.
The only disappointment is that there are no dedicated transpose buttons. But, you can assign other buttons to do the job as a workaround.
Fantastic quality keyboard. Well happy.
his is a great controller it picks up the midi learn in my daw (waveform pro11 running on windows pro 10) works great ….the editor and firmware works when it wants to but just remember nothing will hold settings so every time you turn off they are gone unless you save the setup on the editor and reload it everytime . I play a roland rd800 and have a wurlitzer baby grand to say this has weighted keys is a stretch …if you are looking for a piano feel this is not for you if you are use to playing synth you’ll adapt and if you can play well then it really doesn’t matter about the feel . I love the after touch when playing a guitar or bass to get that same feeling as bending the strings on the neck …i will say it would not separate the keys from the drum pads like a youtube video i watched but didn’t really matter to me as i wasn’t going to try to play both at the same time anyway …also when i bought it mini grand software was not in the box but amazon fixed me up with a discount so all good . All and all would i by it again ? yes sir …would i recommend it ? yessir …..the reason for the 4 and not 5 star was the editor software and the missing software that was suppose to come with i
I could waffle on forever so I’m going to keep it brief, I have used FL Studio for over a decade and at this point I’m never going to switch it out for another DAW, having said that I was disappointed to find out that the VI49 does not function completely in FL. The transport buttons (play, pause, record etc) don’t work with FL, you also can’t get them to work since these buttons transmit CC MIDI signal which the FL interface doesn’t read. Having said that I’m sure that these transport buttons would work in a plugin that did have specific transport function like a loop kit, but again these buttons SHOULD control the DAW in order to help minimize switching between KB+M in the middle of a performance. I noticed that in the MIDI settings there is an entry in the controller type for the Alesis Photon X25, but unfortunately none for the more recent controllers especially the VI49/61. What makes this stranger is that the octave buttons work fine, which makes me wonder why not the rest of the utility buttons? This is one primary reason why I originally wanted to return my VI49 for a keyboard that had more DAW functionality.
While the key bed feels nice and with semi-weighted keys, it also feels like more of a real piano rather than a MIDI controller, again since this is my first MIDI keyboard I don’t have enough experience to know about different key beds but more times than I’m battling with the stiffness of the key bed. Although the more time I spend with it the more it grows on me so it’s a moot point but keep that in mind if you’re looking for a plastic toy kind of feel which in most cases is a con in the long run.
I’ve spent a good portion of the week scouring the net for solutions, reviews, and possible alternatives, but when considering other entry level MIDI keyboards you can’t go wrong with VI49. Personally I’d like to have halved the amount of knobs and switched them for faders but that’s just an aesthetic choice. When you look down and see 12 knobs with 3 buttons under each of them you don’t even want to think about the chore of mapping them all. For reference the Novation Launchkey Mk3 and M-Audio Oxygen Pro seem to have better DAW functionality (and working DAW keys to boot) but the trade off is significant. Ultimately the Launchkey Mk3 has non-weighted ‘hollow/plastic-esque’ keys which according to the majority of website and YT reviewers is noticeable. The Oxygen Pro does have semi-weighted keys and aftertouch but it is plagued with faults and poor construction, check the product page on Amazon for the horror stories. The take away is this.
I would have loved the touch pads of the Oxygen Pro, the utility buttons/functions of the Launchkey Mk3 and kept the key bed of the VI49, this is all hypothetical since I haven’t tried the other two but after spending so long pouring over videos and pages it’s conclusive that these are the pros and cons of each controller. Ultimately the most important thing to any single MIDI keyboard are the keys itself, so the Alesis VI49 takes priority. I’m hoping and praying that Alesis will sort out the FL Studio functionality, if those buttons worked then this would be a flawless MIDI keyboard. I would even be tempted to splurge out on the 61 key next and start my collection! Please Alesis get a patch sorted!
I use it on a Windows 10 computer with FL Studio and Reaper, and it works perfectly fine with both. The full-sized keys have decent weight to them, so while they don’t exactly feel like a real piano, they still feel good to play on. The drumpads, however, could be better. While they aren’t terrible, I find their sensitivity to be a bit awkward and they also have the tendency to play twice when pressed sometimes. This isn’t a deal-breaker for me though.
In addition to the keys and pads, the myriad of buttons and knobs are also useful, although they aren’t an absolute necessity to my workflow. I’ve assigned the 16 knobs to the first 16 tracks’ volume knobs on Reaper, which lets me control track volume on the fly, for example. It’s worth noting that the transport controls (play/pause, stop, rewind, etc.) do not work with FL Studio out of the box, although you can get them to work (not perfectly) with some work.
Overall, I think it’s a great MIDI keyboard, and it comes in cheaper than a few of its 61-key competitors, too.
Great midi keyboard. Ideal for making music at home or in the studio
I love the keys, pads, knobs, bells, whistles!! great value, great quality
Awesome keyboard. Links nicely to the Akai MPC with minimum fuss.
Good response I’ve keys and great pads.
Would recommend!
Product came very quickly, it works perfectly. Really nothing else needed to say I just highly recommend this for aspiring musicians.
o real instructions inside of the function of all the buttons, had to look online!
Recomendable.
Still getting to know it, but so far so good.
I bought this to use with Logic Pro on the Mac. It was recognised instantly, no need for drivers. I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s powered via usb, the keys are velocity sensitive and there is a large array of pads and configurable knobs.
It will be years before the software catches up.
Bought this for my son who will use it in music classes in college to write music. He is very pleased with i
Brilliant piece of kit.
My teenage son loves it and appreciates the technology of what it needs and does.
Brought this for my son, his main gripe was that it didn’t come with a separate power supply, however he seems to like it so far, build quality seems good, would like a better instruction bookle
Pressure sensitive drum pads, sturdy keys, great interface, easy setup
Love it, but i got little problem on pitch wheel when received
Oh yeah baby! Don’t hesitate to order this! Get it ASAP! I did 🙂
Having owned a bunch of midi controllers I am extremely impressed with my VI49. The feel on the semi weighted keys is really nice. The knobs and the modulation/pitch bend wheel feel nice and heavy, and I feel in control. There are better pads out there, but these work well, and I am now fully used to them and can blast away.
I have played some older lines of the same model, and the one I just bought is better somehow.
All in all a fantastic piece of kit for such a modest amount of money.
I’ve spent some time already using the editor program to make changes I want. The editor program itself is not well written, somewhat unfriendly and confusing. Each time you start it you have to re-choose your device midi in and out for some reason. There is no file drag and drop, Neither is there any visual feedback on the keyboard display when sending or receiving to the program. It’s not nice to use at all. However it is versatile enough and you can make all the changes you need. Once all is finally setup as you want, you’ll probably not use it again so it’s no big deal. You can save setups to disc, and to any any of the keyboard’s 24 on-board presets. I shall most likely only ever use one or two.
For midi, each switch can be changed to either toggle, momentary or program change control, each knob to controller or aftertouch and each drum pad to note, toggle, momentary and program change controllers. You can choose from 8 keyboard velocity curves and if needed the keyboard can be split into zones. The transport controllers come set as you’d expect to momentary, but can be changed to toggle if wanted. The mod and pitch bend wheels’ midi channels can also be changed as can the sustain pedal. I will not use the gimicky drum roll function (which can also be edited). Overall I’m really pleased with control available.
The drum pads light up, 3 different colours according to how hard you hit them (completely unnecessary but some may like it)! The preset window, all the switches and tops of the knobs, and even the mod and pitch wheels light up blue, which is a great visual aid in a dark room. Out of the box, and value for money wise, I think this is an excellent controller keyboard. The keyboard action is better than my old device and I can see myself using this for years to come. I’ll amend my review if anything nasty pops up over time, but so far I’d say if the specs fit your needs, buy without hesitation 🙂
There is learning and fun and exploring and time spent to move along and enjoy the power of this tool.
It is a journey that can last a life time.
If you need a great feeling piano with a lot of bells and whistles to control your DAW without even having to touch your mouse? This is pretty much for you.
All the buttons feel great, and responsive, the lights and colors show you exactly what you’re doing, and overall it’s a great piece of technology. It’s well worth the price.
If you’re comparing between this one and the regular V49, and want more control, get this one.
Keyboard is a good one and I am satisfied with it, handling was horrible tho, box came in horrible condition and pads disnt work, seems like they threw it around too much cuz I took it apart to fix and the wiring was off
Not weighted keys like a regular piano but semi-weighted. I recommend. The features are nice.
The bes keyboard for your home studio at this price. Massive keyboard with the ability to raise and lower the keys via buttons. You could set presents on it and the pitch dial comes in handy. Amazing keyboard which gives u a studio vibe with its ambient blue light and colorful launchpad
Looks awesome! Good weighted keys. Knobs and switches are good quality. The only problem is that there are no instructions whatsoever on how to set it up! You have to google and even then, there is very little information on setup. But once you figure it out, its great! By the way… I still haven’t figured out everything, but getting there slowly.
Love the semi weighted keys, software that comes with it has awesome instruments/sounds. Totally worth the money!
Does everything it says it does at a price I don’t mind
I had read up a bit more for my next purchase and opted for the V125. Glad I did. As a music hobbyist it fits in well with my requirements. Full size piano keys as I am use to, programmable controllers, very good build quality and upto date drivers for my MAC. Plugged in and set off.
What more can I say, except it works for me and I am more than pleased, especially after paying that extra and getting a class piece of kit.
The pads are very responsive the keys are great for the price and it blue itself. That is to say the LED’s and entire unit overall is quality. Did I mention I did a reach around, pushed the right spot and it totally blue itself. All over the knobs.
its way bigger than i expected it to be but functions just fine. The air xpand! program was not included with my keyboard.
I originally purchased the 25 key version for my son. He loved it, but the only issue was he needed more keys. I returned the 25 key version and then purchased the version with 49 keys…great decision for only a few extra bucks. This really is a great tool, easy to setup, and use. Be aware that it does not come with a midi connector, but works well with the USB connector (supplied). My son loves it!
Bought this for my son who is musician. He loves it!
Make sure you alter the velocity curve to suit your playing style. When I first played this there was a serious lag using VSTs with the default curve.
his is the perfect tool for anyone learning how to play the keyboard and make beats, the keyboard comes with a link to a sight where you can take lesson for making beat and playing the keys, this is a perfect entry for any beginne
The price, quick shipping & the Product itself is excellent! I am happy with my purchase. I plan on using this product on a daily basis, its sturdy, great keys, pretyy look, smooth buttons and easy to use.
Love making music on this keyboard. The semi weighted keys are great and feel real nice. The mapable buttons are very useful. Great for my production.
I like this midi controller I am able to use it with a mac book pro
* Build Quality
I was really impressed by the solid way in which the Vi61 was built. The case is sturdy, the knobs and buttons have a solid feel, with just enough resistance on the knobs to make transitions smooth. And the handy digital readout allows you to see exactly where you put the dial.
The two wheels to the top left are really nice to the touch, with a lovely, grippy, rubberised finish to them. Both feel smooth and the pitch bend has a nice resistance to it.
The 16 – yes count ’em 16 – pads on the left are much more sensitive than I thought they would be. The lights flash different colours to express how firm you are hitting the pads, which is useful. But even with the softest of taps you can trigger a sample or drum /high hat etc.
* Keys
The keys are the size of piano keys, not typical synth keys. This means more room to be creative and less chance of hitting two unintended keys at once. For those used to the synth keys, don’t worry, you’ll get used to it real quick.
The keys are semi-weighted, which means, rather than press the keys you push the keys, like you would a piano. The keys push back a little and you can get extremely expressive sounds from the velocity sensitive aspect.
* Performance & Integration
This keyboard is plug and play, straight out of the box….but….obvious things like ensuring your DAW (music program) knows that you’ve plugged your new kit in almost go without saying, but to really get the most from this MIDI controller, you need to set it up with your DAW. There’s a simple set of instructions on the Alesis website (didn’t know if I could link) and you can ensure that your knobs and buttons are interacting with your VSTs (instruments).
I’m using Presonus Studio One and everything interacts well.
* In Conclusion
I cannot think of one thing I don’t like about this MIDI controller. The build, feel, ease of use and overall performance make this a no-brainer, especially in this price bracket.
Works great. Pad buttons are a little inconsistent, and the keyboard feel is not great, but for the price it is excellent.
For this price, not sure you can do much better. I really like this keyboard. The semi weighted keys give it a nice feel. Highly recommend.
This a OMG product; period. The keys are semiweighted, soft, the overall product looks very high quality, the pads are strong, high quality, same as all buttons and functionality. It comes with software that allows you to start playing and recording almost immediatley.
The monophonic aftertouch is a great feature because it adds another textural layer to your playing.
The keys are bigger than the Akai version which is nice if you’re used to a piano, and they have a little weight behind them.
I do sometimes wish I had more keys, but then it wouldn’t be portable.
The encoder knobs and buttons are fantastic and work like a charm and are smooth.
The product is a little heavy which is ok for me, and the build quality seems to be pretty great so far.
Bought this for my husband for his birthday and this is his review: Received this as a gift and I had selected it previously on my wish list. I’m not disappointed. I used to have a 61 key Yamaha keyboard and wanted to re-learn what I had learned in the past and add to some guitar and band recordings that I’d made using Garageband–this 49 key Alesis does the job nicely and the feel of the keys is nice too as they feel closer to playing a real piano. I still have much to learn and while it’s nice that Ableton Live 9 was supplied with it, I find it much easier to use Garageband which I’ve played around with since 2007 on an off. But the sounds and effects on both programs are great and I’m looking forward playing as often as I can. It would be nice if they included a power supply with it as well, but given the affordable price not really worth complaining about and of course it powers up fine using the USB line included.
very nice keyboard. The keys feel great and the drum pads feel great. Overall this is keyboard is great and i would recommend buying this even if you’re a beginner or expert.
I have yet to come across any negatives, except I wish there was an 88 key hammer action version. But I expect that would be more expensive. It’s USB MIDI was plug and play with Windows 10 and I haven’t experienced any drop outs.
All in all for the price I don’t think you’ll find a better controller. Highly recommended.
Very good product, you could spend more but do you really need it? Amazing value true plug and play experience just add keyboard in your preferences, the soft synth vst bundle is a great bonus and sounds are great. Overall very glad I chose the 61 keyboard it is full featured so I have complete control over my software producing in reason propellerhead I feel no restrictions other then my ability or ideas. If your thinking about it get this one! I love it very satisfied I am not paid to write this review, just enjoy the product.
Excellent, reasonably-priced keyboard controller. Programmable drum pad is a plus.
Otherwise this is a great product. Keys feel good, there are tons of buttons you can link to. I also really like the simple styling. It’s one of the more restrained designs out there and I like that a lot.
works great, keys are pretty solid, the touchpad isnt super responsive to light touches and it doesnt recognize velocity perfectly, but works fine otherwise. Plug and play, easy to use.
Great for the price. The pads are not as great as I had hoped but they are still good! Overall its a great keyboard. It’s pretty much plug and play with most DAWs.
the keys are semi lightweight
the blue light display is a really nice touch
the pads are also very good quality much like the Akai range
I like the feel of the Macro controllers
You cant fault compact design, easy to travel with.
Beautiful Controller, though I’m still trying get my equipment set up and adjust the MIDI keyboard adjusted to work with my DR 5. Of course when I use it for Ableton Live, it works like a charm.
I love it! Key sensitivity, lots of pads, knobs, etc. all of it feels nice!
Very good keys and has diverse features. Very easy to use.
An awesome keyboard, I got it even before I expected it. Now I can play some stuff 😀 10 / 10
This is a versatile Keyboard. With so many configurable controls, you can concentrate on playing music
Update the firmware. Didn’t know I had to do this, but I definitely do now. Fantastic keyboard, great feel, great features, great price.
Excellent product, great build and great value for money. Had no issues using it with fruity loop.s
Product is good. But not sure the reason that I am always failed to register the product by using the serial number at the back of the keypads. start with (21).
Fantastic purchase!
Alesis are a quality professional product and it’s as cool as f…!
Amazon great service…the keyboard arrived well within time and properly packed.Great build…works right out of the box…the drum pad just feels great! If i were to buy another controller of my choice i would buy it all over agai
so this midi keyboard is pretty sweet.
As for the actual product
its everything it says it is! Nothing feels cheap i was looking for a midrange midi keyboard with enough features to last me for awhile if i really get into music production and this defiantly fits! Its pretty thick, heavy and soild feeling which i wasn’t expecting so not the most portable thing in the world but i didnt buy it for that as thats not what its advertised for. its also long because the drum pads are on the left instead of above the keys but its perfect that way for a keyboard tray so you don’t have to reach over it. also the pitch and mod wheel is what really sold me on this initially, because they often leave them off most keyboards in this price range and they feel really nice!
aesthetic as ****
this whole thing lights up blue and looks beautiful
the semi weighted keys are really nice feeling and the drum pads are a little stiff feeling but its nice to help you fully take advantage of the velocity sensitivity.
This is a truly great product for the price and obviously a brand that really cares about quality and usability
im very new to music producing so setting up this thing was pretty tough considering i dont know what im doing. Turns out you just install ableton and plug it in then it automaps…. the actual downloads from the alesis website are basically a bunch of optional freeware execpt for the program that allows you to remap the board but thats pretty much just for standalone use (not usb plugged in). but just use ableton if you dont already have a DAW.
This is the first keyboard I own, and I absolutely love it!
The Keys feel great and responsive, same for the pads. Seamless plug-and-play integration with Ableton Live 9. I have not found anything to complain about on this piece. Overall this is a solid, well-made keyboard.
I Highly recommend this as a great all-around keyboard for others who are also getting into music production.
I am happy with the quick delivery. Product works as described.
On the seller – these dudes were brilliant. DPD lost my first keyboard, and as soon as I mentioned it another was posted next day delivery, with a nice comment to dpd to try not to lose this one. Will buy from them again if I ever need anything. Thumbs up to them.
I truly love this thing, the build quality and the colors that light up when you turn it on. I have Pro Tools, and to have this keyboard to connect to the software was a bit of a pain, but it all worked out.
In the box, you’re provided with
– a manual
– a code for a software that you can use for this keyboard (lite version).
– keyboard
– and midi cable
I’m a little indifferent to the software, but thats preference.
Its a solid 4.5. I’m sure it will be hugely dependable and in 2-3 years I’ll give it that extra .5
Absolutely love it! The pads work perfectly. The keys are a little hard to press smoothly but its nothing that can’t be fixed in a DAW! Love it!
