Not sure why but this is listed as the Behringer Airplay Guitar. This is actually the Behringer Neutron Synthesizer. I’ve been really impressed with this synth so far. The VCO’s sound amazing with a lot of different shapes you can blend between. Loads of modulation and routing options it really is a lot of fun to use. It works with Eurorack as well so if your wanting to get into that then this gives you a great starting point with a massive amount of ins and outs. For the money there just isn’t anything like it on the market. If your in the market for a synth or are considering this then just buy it it’s that good!

This piece of hardware is a dream. This is my 2nd semi-modular, 3rd overall synth. I haven’t yet learned how to do even a quarter of what is is capable of but already the gentle generative FM ambient and beep-boop wobble storms I’ve created are mind-blowing.

Works really well with my other synths. This thing really fills a wide niche and even though I have my sights set on getting a eurorack module at some point, I this my needs will be taken care of by the Neutron for months. I love this machine, what more can I say?

If you are itching to getting a taste of what a full modular rack rack can do for the price of one module, look no further.

I’ve always wanted to build a Eurorack setup, but wanted to start with something not too expensive and with lots of features. The Neutron is exactly this. Everything you need to start to learn analogue/modular in a great little semi-modular package. You can learn and explore loads of patching ideas with what’s built in.
As you can see I loved it so much I’ve built up a pretty good Eurorack system now, and still extensively using the Neutron’s features.
Also great I could add it to a bigger Eurorack case as I grew my setup, and now it’s full I can put it back in its original case and continue to add more modules.
This really is a great gateway into full modular.

Really good value introduction to Eurorack

Great synth with many possibilities for synth sound design. Beefy oscillators, great overdrive circuit and extensive patching possibilities for the price. An essential adjustment for me was to swap the frequency/tune knobs with smaller ones from anywhere else on the synth because they can easily be accidently nudged when adjusting the osc mix parameter. This really isn’t an issue though as the knobs are easily removable and can be switched around. Really great purchase.

Beefy oscillators and lots of modulation possibilitys at a good price

Behringer to me where always seen as a low quality company. But there recent synths & clones have been a revelation & this little synth is a work of art with it’s semi modular approach there is alot of sonic possibilities.I love the low end it shakes the room.

This is so much fun to use, I haven’t even scratched the surface in what it can do. The knobs feel great to turn with a little resistance so you won’t accidentally nudge your settings. Easy midi channel selection. Superb sound. An excellent start for any one wanting to get into modular synths. Comes with a few patch cables and a ribbon cord for eurorack power. Can be fitted into eurorack or you can buy rack ears for 19 inch rack ( the ears on Amazon only fit the model D not the neutron so you’ll need to look elsewhere)
It can function with or without a midi controller/ keyboard.
Good build quality and great value for money.
Can take a while to learn but there are plenty of good tutorials on you tube

Love my neutron. Does everything from conventional to modulated FM, modular type patches and harshness. Personally I prefer to bypass the overdrive and find the delay quite muddy, but the oscillators, filter, envelope and modulators are absolutely fantastic. So far I’ve used it for moogy trance basses and modulated FM leads in my tracks, just jumps out of the mix and adds a 4th dimension to your DAW if you work in the box. Amazing value for money really, first cheap synth I’ve bought that I havent soon sold or sent back.

A great original design and a very usable synth for people at all levels. It’s capable of so much before you even touch the patchbay, but that really is interesting. I highly recommend it. I was annoyed it didn’t come with patch cables but I believe it’s supposed to.

Absolutely brilliant and great value. It's annoying it didn't have any patch cables included.

Ok you need another reason: if you are interested in modular/eurorack, then this would be the gateway drug. This thing sounds amazing, with out even having to patch it. Loads of thick, fat sounds, it’s analog with a capital A. Take a look at some of the videos on YouTube its a great little synth.
As I said at the beginning, go on, treat yourself.

It’s very versatile. Here’s a tip, buy some attenuating patch cords this will give you some extra voltage control when you’re doing a lot of programming patching and have used up the on board attenuators.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersMy first impressions on unboxing were, and remain, that this is easily the most beautiful bit of kit that i own. The photos don’t quite get across the finish on this. But what does it sound like? Well, if you want a basic, easy to use synth, then this probably is not for you. For one thing, this has no keyboard or internal sequencer abilities. So you will need to already have some other bit of kit that can trigger the sounds in this.
    .
But assuming that you already have those, or are also buying them along with this, then this is definitely a lot of fun. And i have (accidentally) gotten some great sounds out of it. But the moment you change any setting or move any dial then you will never exactly recreate that sound again. But that’s kind of the point. Great as computers and DAWs can be, they do often leave us with option paralysis. But then with this, whatever sound you are getting at any one time is what you are getting, until you change something, and then it’s gone and that’s it.
    .
But the another thing about this (something great in my opinion), is that while it is all set up to already sound good, there is also a patch bay to one side where you can start to experiment with different modular-style connections. You don’t have to, it’s a bonus option.
    .
I had been wondering for a while if modular synths are something that i wanted to start investing time, money, and energy in to. And this synth was an entirely pleasant way for me to find out that no, modular is not for me. But at the same time i will be keeping this, permanently. This is great in itself. But it has also saved me a fortune and a lot of headaches in finding out that modular isn’t all as fun as people on YouTube often make it look.
    .
But i would still recommend this beast to anyone, even if it were two, or possibly even three times the price. The bass that this can make will probably get you evicted. At very least you might end up shopping for new speakers soon, just because of this.

Golden Review Award: 40 From Our UsersHave you got 300 burning a hole in your pocket and an unquenchable thirst for yet more synthesizers? Are you agonising over the boutique, hand-built quality you can’t afford, or the low-cost digital recreations of the same old ideas?

Step this way – ’cause this synth is, unusually for Behringer, a pretty original concept that’s been done rather well.

If you’re wondering what genre or style of music it’s appropriate for – all of ’em. Wendy Carlos did classical on synths like this, they’re in everything from prog rock to drill/rap; it has no restrictions (no instrument does – but because you’re putting the music in, and it’s just making the sound you created, it’s very open-ended unlike a box of presets and samples).

TBH, you don’t even need to read the rest of this review. It’s a brilliant analogue synth at low cost.

Behringer’s synth designs are better known as clones of classics, and it’s not wholly original – there are only so many ways you can make a patchable analogue two-oscillator synth with this type of filter and these oscillators – but it has its own look and its own sound, and is really rather good; a lot of that is down to opening up the features as much as possible – all waveforms are available, for example, no artificial limits for the sake of marketing a ‘higher-end’ version.

It’s a top choice for introducing older kids to analogue synthesis, or adding some analogue joy to your existing setup. You will need a controller though – I recommend the Arturia Keystep Pro because it’s very easy to use, but also offers lots of control-voltage (CV) connectivity effectively providing an animation sequencer as well as notes.

    Other modular solutions are available!

    Pros – for beginners:

    * Low-cost for the power you get
    * Really straightforward – with a couple of caveats
    * Instant results every time
    * Hugely popular – loads of tutorial videos, how-tos, patches, hacks and advice out there

    Pros – for pros:

    * Super-beefy dual-VCO sound with genuinely usable delay and fun overdrive section (can be bypassed)
    * So cheap you can consider building polychained monsters
    * Great connectivity, modular-friendly design, including audio patching
    * Doesn’t take up much space, has proper connectors – no 3.5mm nonsense here except on the patchbay
    * Genuinely different sound engine in some regards, due to blending/routing. A real bargain compared to anything with similar features
    * Paraphonic mode, and flexible retriggering (but needs the utility to change)

    Cons:

    * The tuning knobs are super-sensitive and super-light to touch, even in standard ranges
    * Can be glitchy sometimes – firmware process/calibration isn’t the best, but it’s still more than most bare-bones analogues offer
    * For beginners, there’s no patch storage, sequencer or anything. so you need to note down the cool stuff you’ve created! Pro’s need to as well, but it becomes habit – there’s nothing more frustrating than making a nice sound then forgetting what you did
    * You’re about to learn a lot about gain-staging and considering your pre-amp part of the whole sound-creation process – but this thing can whisper or wail to great effect
    * That front panel might be original, but it’s also pretty hard to read. You may want an aftermarket one

What do I love about it – and some context.

This is my first Behringer synth, and it’s taken a long time and a lot of ‘wanting’ to get there – since the mid ’90s I’ve owned a ridiculous variety of synths, and very few of them gel; I bought this primarily to explore the CV control possibilities of the Keystep Pro as I already have a Circuit Mono Station for analogue realness.

They couldn’t be more different, though. The Neutron’s old-school design really shines through, with serious punch at times even without the overdrive. It’s got so much instant character that I’ve been distracted from my other synths every time I start playing with it. It can do basses, synth pianos, sci-fi noises, leads, clever tricks and amazing, evolving drones – with the aid of a CV sequencer you can really take it up a notch, too, animating filter and waveform for some insane, subtle and not-so subtle noises. The filter doesn’t so much self-oscillate as self-immolate, the resonance is so hot – and you can run the LFO at audio frequencies.

Even with the experience I’ve had of different synths, the Neutron’s ‘drive’ section caught me out – so while this is a super affordable, super-flexible synth that is a great investment for your kids if they’re interested in electronic music, it does have more of a learning curve than say, an MS-1, Circuit or BassStation.

The patchbay might look intimidating, but as a first synth you can just ignore it – everything is pre-routed and already very flexible. This is about as good as it gets for self-contained, cheap, patchable without random limitations and affordable – and it’s very musically useful, far from a disposable toy.

As the first Behringer synth I’ve bought, I really couldn’t be happier with it.

This Neutron has star quality - great synth that's affordable for beginners

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe filter – the heart of any synth – is excellent and quite unlike anything I’ve heard. Bypass the clones and buy something flexible and original. The lack of OSC fine tune controls pains me, but one can’t have everything.

Works superbly as an ‘expansion box’ for a Moog Grandmother, which is how I use it. The oscillators sound a touch less strong than the Moog’s but it’s a 10% difference. I use the Neutron filter just as often as the Moog’s, so go figure.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIch habe den Neutron nun schon eine Weile. Ganz klar 5 Sterne.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is fantastic for the money and another reason why Behringer are dominating the affordable synth market. I’m not going to discuss the full range of functionality available, but I would say that a key strength of the Neutron, which isn’t often talked about, is that if you can use it with other synths (e.g. I’ve often got the Neutron running a sequence whilst it’s simultaneously patched into my Model D’s filter). If you wanted that range of functionality available from a fully modular system, you’d have to spend significantly more money.

There are imo a couple of negatives with this synth…

Filter: I’m not keen on it, it does excel for high-frequency sounds but of all the synths I own, it’s my least favourite filter. Takes a lot of tweaking to smooth it out

VCOs: Personally I’d rather have individual volume control for each oscillator rather than blend – also the tuners are quite easy to accidentally bump, so prone to knocking it out of tune. Additionally, I’ve found I don’t use most of the waveform shapes, although I would say that the useful ones are excellent.

OD: the OD circuit is part of the internal routing so you have to patch it out if you don’t want to use it – I’d rather it was out by default and you had to patch it in if you wanted to use it

On the positives – this is from my experience of using it over the last 9 months…

Attenuators – start with something boring but these are absolutely vital – extremely useful for additional control over your patching, allowing you to refine the amount of modulation you’ve patched into your sound. I also regular steal them to cross-patch into other synths

VCA Bias – this confuses most Neutron noobs as you need to turn it down to get individual notes to play, however it’s great for legato by adding just a touch, or for generating drones without using cv/ midi input if you crank it

LFO: multiple different types of cycle (sine, square, ramp etc) and I personally love the option to patch in a trigger so you can reset the LFO cycle in time with your sequence, particularly good when you’re using a ramp

Multimode Filter: the patching allows you to combine two filter types (High, Band & Low Pass) – particularly useful via the attenuators so you can blend the amount of each filter type that you’re using

Delay: the Bucket Brigade Delay gets a lot of criticism from people who basically want a digital delay. Personally, I find the BBD has far more character, gives you quite a dark/ haunting sound – keep in mind that BBDs were all over 70s electronic & prog rock music – if it’s good enough for Pink Floyd etc…

Although I have criticisms, the patch bay alone is worth more than the price of this synth so I’ve given it five stars. Since I bought the Neutron, I’ve used it on practically everything I’ve recorded

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersThis is a truly beautiful bit of kit, really well thought-out. The builders have really broken synthesis down to- what do you want and need to have if you only have one synth to make great music. Whether your new to modular synth gear or have racks of the stuff, this is a got to have synth voice. Very versatile especially as it has waveform blending, S&H, BBD delay and Overdrive already there to enhance or develop the timbre. From sweet melodies, bowel churning bass or atmospheric warbling this beast does it. No Sequencer- so what!! most people don’t need another sequencer- it has USB midi, 5pin midi and cv, so connect it to your computer, keyboard etc and make great music or get lost in sound creation. I’m not a Behringer employee- I just love this synth -see Nick Batt, Sonistate on youtube for a full review of what it sounds like.
