Very easy to install shower with lots of flexibility for fittings. I’d never fitted a shower before, but this was actually very straightforward and quick. (Once I’d found the water off switch and double checked the electrics I’d even say it was stress free ). Easy to use controls with a fairly quick heat up time as well.

Certainly does what it is supposed to do. Installation was easy using the existing writing and plumbing connections. It took about half an hour to install. If you like really hot showers then this is not for you. It gets very hot and is suitable for our family, but we don’t like boiling showers, but I know some people do.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWe live in a hard water area, showers die here in short time, this was a straight change out, exactly the same shower, the old one lasted 5 years, a record for our house, the push to fit water connection is brilliant, no plumbing required in my case, electrics are easy to do, the screw holes were exactly the same as the old one, awesome. Recommended.

I had no idea that this is the entry level model because it looks so sleek and works well. Good pressure and very straightforward to use. It has replaced an older Mira electric shower that was past its best (odd noises, the occasional hot/cold shock…). I would much rather have an electric shower like this because it’s cheaper to replace them that have to remove tiles with a plumbed-in ‘power shower’. Been there, done that!

The Bristan Smile shower is the entry level shower from the new Bristan range in 8.5kW, A-class energy efficient, selling at a good value for money price. Another good feature about the shower, apart from the low energy consumption, is the build in anti-scale.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI wasn’t really aware of Bristan as a shower manufacturer before, but I have been very impressed by them and would recommend them. We have two of these showers, which we have had fitted by a qualified electrician into our rented flat (with our Landlord’s permission!) replacing two old and dated shower units, which were passed their best. The electrician said that they are very straightforward to fit and there weren’t any surprises for him and he said that they were decent quality.

We have the smile version and we have the smarter (in looks and function) joy model shower and the price difference at the time of writing is about 50 and I have to say that this model is perfectly functional, but that the value of the additional features (particularly the safe showering feature) of the joy model make it well worth investing in the superior model.

If you are buying a basic model just for an occasional use, then by all means the smile model does the job – but if you are buying a shower unit as your main shower, then spend a little more – it’s worth it to have the thermostatic control – particularly in a family home, so that you don’t have sudden changes in temperature when someone turns on a tap in another part of the house! The 50 price difference might seem a lot at first, but it you think about how often you shower, it’s not something you want to skimp on for your daily use.

Nice, basic shower unit and better looking than some of the other basic models on the market – it gives a good spray of water and it’s easily fitted by an electrician.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFirst off, I’d recommend you get this fitted by a qualified electrician/plumber – water and electricity are not a good mix, so get it done right.

Our electrician/plumber team commented that this was an easy fit to replace an existing electric shower, with no particular issues.

On to the shower unit itself, it is a basic model.
    – At 8.5kW, it is not the most powerful electric shower, but it does the job.
    – It is a clean-looking white and silver combo – no frills, just looks like a simple shower.
    – The shower head gives a good spray – it has no options to change the type of water flow but most don’t want or need that anyway.
    – It has no anti-limescale feature – worth considering a more advanced model if you live in a hard water area.

This shower certainly looks to be of very good quality. Unfortunately I have been unable to have it installed yet as my plumber/electrician is currently busy on a very big project. However, he assures me that the choice of shower is a good one, and considers it to be of excellent quality and very efficie

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersA basic shower at a budget price (99 on Amazon at present). It is 8,5kw so not the most powerful electric shower on the market but the pump seems to work well and it was adequate for my mother. I am using this to replace a Mira 9.5kw shower that is 12 years old and looking a bit long in the tooth. The current shower has a bit of copper pipe that stands out a bit proud in the bottom right corner that I always thought looked at bit naff but it seems that is how electric showers are futted and this casing seems to fit over it just fine. The shower head is pretty basic with just one setting. I kept my original riser which this fitted on to well (although there is a riser rail in the box). It also has no anti lime feature and I live in a hard water area so would have been tempted to pay a little more for that feature. Bristan is a well known make in bathroom fitting but I had not seen an electric shower from them before and it looks really stylish for the price. It would be great for a holiday flat or student rental etc where you don’t want to spend a fortune and may need to replace more often than usual. I like having an electric shower in the house because if the gas boiler fails you are not left completely without hot water and a means to keep clean.

As others have pointed out you need to get in an electrician to wire the shower up.

Golden Review Award: 89 From Our UsersAs a professional plumber, I fit a lot of electric showers, mostly these days as replacements for existing ones. Bristan are not a make I’ve encountered very often with electric showers (they do some great mixer showers that I see frequently), so it has been interesting to see how this new one compares to the Triton and Mira units that make up nearly all my jobs.

I’m not going to bother too much with the styling and features as my opinion is probably different from yours. All I will say is the unit and its associated fittings seem perfectly well made and I have no doubt they will last as well as the other makes I’ve mentioned. You get a two year parts and one year labour guarantee and I believe you can extend the labour free of charge to two years too, so you can buy one with confidence.

I’ve always found Bristan very helpful to deal with so they are certainly a firm I trust.

    Right, a few fitting notes.

If you’re fitting one of these from scratch, it’s no more difficult than with any other make, with plenty of cable and pipe entry points. If you’re a DIY-er, you can’t do the electrics yourself, so don’t bother trying. You’ll need a Part P qualified electrician to sort them out for you.

From a plumbing point of view, the plastic push fit male/female elbow supplied will make life easier than having to tighten a compression fitting.
Note that if it’s fed from a pipe out of the tiled wall, you’ll need a sufficiently large hole to allow the elbow to go into as it sticks out proud of the back of the unit.

    Otherwise, it’s all straightforward stuff.

As a replacement unit, (and the following paragraphs are the reasons I’ve docked it a star), the same push fit elbow is potentially going to be a pain. You’ll almost certainly be replacing a shower fitted with a compression elbow, so you’ll probably need to replace the plastic one supplied with a bit of copper pipe into the old compression joint. This may make fitting the pipe into the casing harder due to the increased space the compression fitting will now need.

Replacing most Miras with it, you should be okay as the Mira’s water inlet’s on the left, as are the electrics, and there’s room to fit everything in. If the old one has its water and cable on the right (common on Tritons), you’re likely to have a right game as there’s little space for a compression fitting and unless the old cable is either unusually long or you can pull some of it through, the new shower has a fixed cable connector on the left part way up, and you’ll have to work out how to get the cable over there. This is the main potential fault I can see with the Bristan unit.

It’s also worth noting that the riser rail uses a single screw through it to secure it to the wall, the other fitting being free to move up and down to cover pre-existing rail screw holes. This is a great idea unless one of the old screw holes is damaged (if it’s plasterboard behind the tiles, it may well be) and just having one screw holding the rail in place could lead to a wobbly final fit.

To sum up, I think this looks to be a good alternative to the usual Miras and Tritons for a new fit, but I am a little concerned that there could be some fun and games if it’s used to replace an existing shower.

If my brief review has been of help to you, I’d appreciate a click of the ‘Yes’ button, below. Thanks very much.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a decent basic shower unit. I’ve used the same shower, under it’s previous branding, for the last four years with no problems.

As with any electric shower, you’d be an idiot to fit it yourself. As this unit is basic, mine was installed by an electrician for 60, I didn’t need to hire a plumber as well.

The fixtures are chrome rather than plastic, which is nice. The shower head is very basic, and has only one setting. So I just unscrewed it and replaced it with my old shower head. The shower doesn’t have the ‘anti-lime’ feature the more expensive models have, but even though I live in a hard water area I’ve never had limescale problems with this shower.

There’s no argument this is a very basic shower. There are no comfort features, such as maintaining the water temperature when someone uses a tap, or pre-setting the starting temperature so showers don’t freeze you whilst they warm up, It’s not a high-pressure, power shower. It’s just a decent day-to-day home shower unit. I’ve used it for years, and I’m happy to carry on using it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIf you are looking for a simple, good quality, British made electric shower then the Bristan SM385 W is a good choice.

It is well engineered, robust and has a two year guarantee from the firm back that up with buying it from Amazon at an excellent price much better than the big DIY stores then you are quids in.

It actually does look a smart, good looking machine. The white finish and chrome rising bars and hose will match most colour schemes.

It is compact and yet effective.

    In the box you get
    1 x Electric Shower
    1 x Riser Kit
    1 x Hose
    1 x Multi-mode Handset
    1 x Warranty Card
    1 x Instruction Booklet.

It is able to fitted by any experienced DIYer but a qualified engineer should be able to give you a good quote.

The shower it self is basic but when all you want is a simple turn on and go shower it is perfect for most needs.

It runs from a cold water feed and the water is heated from within the housing.
This together with the five different inlet positions means it can fit just about anywhere you can get a water supply in.
It is very forgiving and makes a good choice for a second shower area.

The name given is ‘Smile’ if you want a more singing, dancing bells and whistles model then you could look at the firms ‘glee’, ‘joy’ and ‘bliss’ models.
They will do more than this basic machine but then you will pay more and you need to ask yourself if you will use all those extra features?

This is a basic shower that delivers a good stream of water.

It is simple and very easy to keep clean.
We live in a hard water area and limescale builds up reducing the effectiveness of our showers.
This machine is easier to keep clear of limescale simply because there is less to go wrong.
This could be worth considering when you know where you will locate it and what it’s useage will be.

As it is British built you can be reassured that the shower is safe it passes all the trade kite marks and safety tests.

Fitting is fairly straight forward the booklet is clear and intelligible and in clear English to boot.

All in all a very good yet simple shower that works well.

    Thanks for reading.
