Absolutely cracking piece of office kit. Does exactly what it says in the spec. Really good bin capacity. EXCELLENT.
Excellent shredder that just cuts through everything. Never overheats so you can carry on as long as you need it.
This is a sleek design and does its job reasonably well. It produces confetti rather than spaghetti, and is easy to empty. It’s quiet, but fairly slow.
In a long initial shredding session, it jammed twice. On one occasion I had to clear residual paper which had stuck above the cutters. No way can it cope with an advertised ten A4 sheets of 80gsm at a time. Its limit is about four.
In summary, this is fine for light home use, but is definitely not a heavy-duty machine.
Purchased to replace a QShred shredder which unfortunately gave up the ghost after five years only because of the trip switch (which was inaccessible to repair). This Dahle shredder is nowhere near as robustly built and was a lot more money although truth be told the QShred was a civil service disposal for fifty quid!
At least this Dahle has a good name and a decent warranty even though it is made in China. Only time will tell if it gives good, long lasting, trouble free home service. Will keep you posted in due course so watch this space.
Pros –
Quiet operation.
Shreds the specified10 sheets without difficulty.
Very large waste capacity with sight window.
Very good jam clearing features.
Sturdy.
Does a lot of shredding before unit goes into cool down.
Destroys plastic credit cards very well but you end up with mixed paper and plastic in the waste tray which is bad for recycling.
Cons –
Like all shredders generates quite a lot of very fine dust with heavy use which is a concern.
It is not air tight obviously because the paper feed slot is open and that is where the dust escapes from.
After 30 minutes use the entire machine was covered in a fine film of dust.
The paper feed slot accepts A4 paper widths but it is exact;ly A4 size, which is too narrow for wide envelopes that contain A4 sheets, most envelopes are a little wider so they never fit into the slot.
Destroys plastic credit cards very well but you end up with mixed paper and plastic in the same waste tray which is bad for recycling.
I wish they had used the same slot for destroying CDs AND Plastic bank cards since the CD slot has its own waste tray but the CD slot cannot shred a credit card to the same degree as the paper cutter.
If you have never bought a shredder think carefully about what you want it to do, I went for the 10 sheet shredder mostly to destroy letters in our home office, however, letters from banks like statements etc often have small booklets in them or lots of sheets containing far more than 10 sheets of coated paper, sometimes 15 to 20 (folded and including envelopes) so you will have to break them down before putting the letter into the machine.
Decide what you want and go for the next size up is my advice so you will never have to think about getting a more capable one and it will destroy 90% of regular mail in one pass.
I like that because I am lazy.
Dust, I marked it down one star because of the dust it releases after prolonged use, it is really fine respirable type dust and you can see it floating straight up, so make sure you use it in a room you don`t mind getting dusty and make sure it is well ventilated. When emptying the waste tray, it is a good idea to wear a dust mask too and to empty it outside because you get a bigger cloud of dust when the tray is removed.
I think this product could be improved in this regard by the fitment of a removable soft brush assembly resembling paint brush fibres, on top of the feed slot to keep the dust inside the machine, a brush you can pass paper through. Dust build up could be removed with a vacuum but it is better kept in the machine than coming out of it into the air.
Overall a solid product, strong and sturdy with powerful cutting action.
Shame about the dust control.
This is used domestically, and not abused. But – we have had two shredders from other makers, and treated them with love and care, but they were rubbish by comparison. I guess that you get what you pay for – this cost more than the others, but so far, is quiet and faultless.
Had lots of shredders and this is by far the best. Benefits: its on wheels, light, fast, not too loud, pull out bin has a large capacity, easy to empty, does not over heat. Really recommend-)
Nice and quiet, only had for a month so not a lot to tell so far. Does what I need it to
So pleased with this shredder, I love that I can wheel it anywhere I want, it’s easy to use, copes with all my paperwork, would really recommend this shredde
Excellent capacity shredder. Easy to use. Has a separate credit card shredding facility, it has a fan to keep the motor cool and although I would never recommend heavy duty shredding for prolonged periods of time, this machine is quick and efficient and is able to keep going for quite a while, at least 30 mins. So far very pleased with the purchase and definitely worth the money.
Important to read the instructions as with all machines.
Kept going for ages don’t try and put two thick at once Very good purchase
Excellent shredder really does it’s job. Very pleased with product. Just one thing how do you register product with company?
No fuss plug in & it does exactly what it’s supposed to.
Good quality.
Much bigger than I expected but it is very quiet and works really well. After trying slightly cheaper models including a well known cross cut that disintegrated only 12 months I thought I needed to spend a bit more for my home office. Very pleased with purchase, because it’s bigger it doesn’t need emptying as often. It has an on off switch but also button to press to run the shredder so feel it is safe. Has a cd shredding facility but I won’t need this. It will cut credit cards but only in half in the cd section but it’s not everyday a credit card needs shredding so not an issue. I almost considered sending this back due to the size but so glad I didn’t.
I purchased the Paper SAFE 260, 12 sheet cross-cut shredder.
Over the years I have purchased several relatively cheap shredders (40-80) and they have all been noisy, fail to live up to their paper handling specifications and need lengthy cool-down sessions after a few minutes of shredding more than a few pages.
This Dahle is a revelation. It is quiet, oil free and just shreds away without needing a cooling break! It has a large collection box, is on lockable casters and has a removeable IEC plugged power cable.
This is by far the best shredder I have ever owned and I would not hesitate to buy another, should this one fail outside of warranty – I hope it lasts much longer, of course!
Edit – Review Update – 6 months on!
Shredder still going strong, ususally used for minor day-to-day shredding tasks.
However, yesterday, I shredded 17 years worth of old bank statements and pay slips. The pile must have been some 4 inches thick. Anyway, started shredding and only stopped briefly to empty the bin when required. The shredder just kept going and going until it was all done. What a great performance!
We like the compact size and the low noise levels of this P5 shredder. It doesn’t look very exciting but that is the surprise of it. It effortlessly does it’s job, with little or no disruption sound wise. One of the best pieces of office equipment I have come across. The cost seems a lot compared to a lot of other brands but the investment is definitely worth it.
