It’s is a little (3 seconds) of inconvenience to pierce capsules but I find the reviews very harsh.
This looks fantastic and is great value for money.
Works well but I sent mine back due to a faul
Easy to use – easy to clean – perfect coffee every time.
Great looking. Needed to read instructions. So far so good, still experimenting
We were given this amazing machine for our wedding in 2014. It was a game changer.
We have used it several times a week since then and twice a day (minimum) since in lockdown, as I WFH.
I love coffee, and worked for a coffee roasting company, so I understand what good coffee should taste like.
This is the simplest espresso machine to use (never touched the pods). I use with a Dualit Burr Grinder for the best results.
Easy to use, easy to make microfoam milk for cafe quality flat whites, great espresso and easy to maintain (one descale a month).
Don’t understand the poor reviews.
This machine looks incredible and punches well above its weight (and saves you spending 700 with a Sage Barista Pro).
If mine ever breaks (7 years and going strong) I will re-order immediately.
Thanks Dualit 🙂
Excellent coffee machine and without going above 500 in my view it is the best. Nice quality housing. The water pump does make a racket though – so if you turn it on at 5am in a small house then you won’t be popular.
If used in hard water areas they require regular descaling – otherwise it will require the innards replacing and Dualit have raised the cost of repairing
Overall really good product though and nice that it is made in the UK.
I owned a previous 2014 Dualit Espressivo model which served me well for 7 years.
This model is as good as the last one so far:
– quite a few tools come with the machine as standard, so all sorts of coffees and capsules can be used. It can even do tea.
– nice and efficient froth nozzle
– good pressure
– large water tank
– an improvement over the last model is the guiding “wall” behind the brew head, which allows the filter holders to placed more precisely without having to look
Minor “negatives”:
– this model no longer has a movable accessory holder that could be attached to the rail on the top of the machine and held unused filters or froth head so they can be reached quickly if needed
– it is ever so slightly noisier than the previous model, but this is barely noticeable after a few uses.
Would recommend this product, let’s hope it lasts as long as the last version.
This is a great espresso for home use. Easy to use and very well made. I have had this product over six months now and can’t fault it. I clean monthly and use a water filter bag as I live in a hard water area.
Gave this purchase a lot of thought after the Nesspresso started leaking. Seriously considered the SMEG but wanted to support a UK company and have had a Dualit toaster for years. The ability to use Nesspresso pods was a positive so we could us the old stock up. It was a risk as the SMEG which over 100 more was highly rated online.
We have had it a week and so far we are not disappointed. Quality is great and matches the toaster. Stainless and cast aluminium, limited plastic on the body other than the water container. Handles of the coffee holders bare plastic and could be a bit better, but that is being picky. Quality of the coffee is excellent, though it is more of a faff than the old Nesspresso machine ( takes the to make a coffee, but like vinyl vs CD…worth it). We have been using the ESE coffee bags which are quite convenient and no plastic or aluminium pods to deal with.
The real surprise and bonus was the packaging…no polystyrene!! Hurrah. All cardboard other the plastic bags. Recommend. Really very pleased, as is my wife.
Does exactly what is meant to do and the options for pods or coffee makes it very versatile. Get your lockdown coffee at home and keep safe. Yju won’t know the difference in taste
Replaced a faulty dualit. This machine is simple and efficient. Super compact so great if you have limited space. Very happy.
The Dualit Espresso-Auto works really well and makes consistently good coffee whether using pods or ground coffee. Don’t use cheap pods though, that often fall apart making the coffee in drinkable. Also use fine ground coffee for best results.
This was a purchase for the League of Friends of ST Marks Hospital. I understand that it is serving the staff and patients verey well
Lots of options, ground coffee , ccoffee pads an Nespresso evironmenvental pods!
Setting up with a coffee pod is a litlle more involved than a standard nespressobut after 2 months is working well
I have just taken delivery of the Dualit Bean to Go coffee machine. It is easy to set up and very straightforward to use. No mess no fuss just excellent coffee without delay. I had a Dualit Express Auto 4 in 1 that used everyday for five years until it finally wore out! This new machine creates no mess uses no pods just coffee beans! What could be better than that. I would thoroughly recommend this machine especially as it is on offer at Dualit at the moment.
Great little machine
Could not survive lock-in with out i
Easy to use and makes a wonderful cuppa. Would recommend this product very highly.
Lovely coffee machine, looks good and makes good coffee I love it.
I have used Dualit coffee machines for 15 years. This model is the best yet. It is very easy to use. To get the best crema you will need to experiment with the ground coffee. Once you get the coarseness right you get the best coffee.
Replacing an older model after ten years service. Can’t go wrong with Duali
This is my third buy. My last one was bought in 2012 and started leading in 2019 – good going! The new one has an additional head for Nespresso pods, which is really neat. If I’m making coffee for lots of people this is much easier. For just me or a small group I prefer to to it full barista style with ground coffee. A perfect crema every time.
Makes great coffee but not easy to remove frother for cleaning
Nice machine. Nothing to ever compare it with and it’s great so far. Can’t put a really big cup under it but otherwise it’s great.
As other reviews may have said – you are commiiting yourself to learning what can amount to almost a hobby.
So to get the best out of the machine, read the instruction book thoroughly and experiment with different coffees.
The milk frother does a good job – I hvae foumd that just before it produces steam there is a small amount of hot water that is put through the steam wand – I don’t let this go into the milk so you get a better result.
Take time with this machine and you won’t be disappointed – there are lost of places selling the compatible pods too.
I like having the optionof pods or using freshly ground coffee.
Almost didn’t buy. Glad I did. Makes lovely coffee. Takes a bit of playing around with to get mix as you want- but that’s part of the fun. Well worth buying.
Simple to use dual left for coffee and right for steam. Superb results what could be better.
Its got great features. Its a tea and coffee maker!! although the tea pods aren’t as freely available as the coffee its a great machine. Compact size yet offering all the necessary features. Highly recommend
This is a lovely machine which would be useful for lovers of quality coffee or for anyone who enjoys entertaining. It has a built in grinder which produces five different sizes of grounds and an adjustable dose function to deliver your preferred strength of coffee. The coffee nozzle is also adjustable to suit the height of your cup. The instruction book includes recipes for americano, latte, cappuccino, mocha, flat white, hot chocolate and babycino (cappuccino without the coffee). The steaming wand makes hot and frothed milk which can also be used for hot chocolate drinks. It sounds really good, and it is. It is worth doing a bit of experimentation as it takes time to master the instructions for all the different functions, but it is fun to take orders from guests and produce barista style coffees for their delectation.
The instruction booklet is well set out and easily understood. It also contains lots of illustrations so you can’t really go wrong with setting up or using the machine.
At the end of each day the machine needs to be cleaned using an 18 step routine which I find quite fiddly.
How does this compare to my espresso machine?
* My espresso machine is much simpler to use but does much less.
* My espresso machine uses ground coffee and ese pods, this one uses beans. Therefore there is less plastic waste.
* I had to search the shops for appropriately sized cups to use with the espresso machine, with this I don’t.
* The Bean to Go is much more streamlined and so looks much neater on the worktop.
This opens up a whole new coffee world to me. Having used quality instant, espresso machine coffee and cappuccino and latte sachets this is wonderful. It brings coffee shop drinks into the home and who could ask for more.
It is expensive, but it does the job well, and if you are buying your coffee from coffee shops that is expensive too. I would give it 5 stars.
– Review from my 65-year-old mum
This coffee maker took a while to set up, but once you finally work out how to customise the maker it is very straight forward to use. A tip would be to use the coffee beans provided with maker to work out how to use the machine. Coffee hopper holds almost a a whole bag of 250g roasted beans and there is a dial inside the hopper to adjust the grind to your preferences. There are several cup sizes of coffee to chose from that are preset in volume (though the amount of liquid can be adjusted to your preferred cup size). It makes a nice coffee, but they cups are very small and do not seem all that strong unless double or triple dosing of you require a longer drink. The hot water dispenser and cleaning function is a little hit and miss at times to get working as you need to press the one button at the same time as the water button for clean else you end up just dispensing hot water into the drip tray. Cleaning the machine at the end of the day is quite simple. Just removing the parts from the easy access panel on the side and rinsing out the coffee grounds that have not fallen into the grounds tray. The water tank is not that big so does need filling up regularly. Overall it’s a fairly small footprint and easy to use. Good if you are a frequent drinker of coffee and drink several cups a day. A bonus is that the disposal of the grounds is very eco friendly too.
This machine makes excellent coffee and is so easy to use even my luddite husband can work it.
Pros:
The instructions are really easy to follow.
The rinse function is simple to operate – there’s an automatic rinse when you turn it on, and you can do an extra rinse manually if you want to.
You can very easily adjust the amount of water dispensed with the coffee.
It’s extremely quick to warm up and delivers coffee fast.
The grinding noise is not too loud or piercing, it’s quite well muted.
The milk steamer works extremely well with little dilution of the milk being steamed
Soya milk is steamed to perfection, I’ve had the best soya hot chocolates ever with this machine.
Cleaning and servicing is very straightforward.
Cons:
Think carefully about where you will position the machine in your kitchen. The water tank, placed at the back, lifts out vertically – and there is not enough room between my kitchen counter and the cupboards above for it to lift out and away. I have to fill my water tank with a jug.
It’s not easy to swap between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as there is only one coffee bean hop.
There is no aroma from the grinder, which might reduce the coffee ritual if you are used to smelling the coffee being ground.
Coffee-wise it’s slightly more expensive to run than my filter machine. 14g coffee = one cup with the duallit compared to 7g coffee for one cup from my filter machine.
The most difficult thing about this machine is watching my coffee intake!
This was well packaged and was very easily set up. I have a different brand bean to cup machine and was pleased to note that this took up less space on the worktop. I followed the clear instructions and it was set up in no time at all. Each section that comes out or takes apart does so easily and therefore the cleaning of each part is quite easy. It has taken me the best part of a week and several coffees a day to really make the perfect coffee. Even so each persons taste is personal to them, and so it is importance to persevere with the different sized coffee grinds- as even with my usual coffee I felt that I was making a bitter drink that really wasn’t very nice. Having adjusted the grind size several different times I finally got it just right. I am not an espresso drinker – but have a love of coffee shop lattes – and this was a great comparison. I loved the steaming wand- my current coffee to bean machine uses a long plastic thin tube to pump the milk through and out into the drinks- this is an absolute nightmare to clean- and although a steaming wand means I have to do this bit manually- it doesn’t take long – and is much, much easier to clean afterwards. So much easier- and my current machine is actually twice the price of this one- so this one is winning on size, ease to clean and use for a much more realistic budget. There is some cleaning maintenance required at the the end of each day- but once you’ve done it once or twice it becomes quite quick and straightforward. Overall this is a great little machine, but just in my experience be prepared to tweak and play and of a few days until you really do make the perfect coffee and then its great! And really, a very compact good size.
I thought it worth adding some photos of the unboxing process as it was a joy and as the packaging unfolds it invites you to register the machine, after that comes the instruction manual (English) which is very clear to understand but there is a fair bit to take in. The recipes at the end of the manual were a big help to getting going with our first creations, once were setup. Out of the box this Dualit Bean to Go machine is a compact stunner and it adds a touch of class. It’s made from a robust wipe clean plastic finish, the design is simple and it looks like a coffee machine, not like some of the other designs on the market.
Setting up was simple, everything clicks into place seamlessly, the drip tray is magnetically held in place which is a nice touch, the nozzle height adjust has a smooth controlled motion and the service door on the side is held in place by magnets that hinge access to the infuser. It will be different for everyone where they put their coffee machine but in my case the wall unit height hindered access to the water tank which created the frustration of having to pull the machine forward each time to gain access to fill. Filling the hopper was easy, the two bags of beans provided were a nice touch to get you going straight out of the box. As the manual talks you through there are a number of steps for cleaning and daily care, all of which are easy as the various components clip apart easily. There is a fair bit of daily maintenance with this machine and I feel this where it sets its self-up as a true coffee lovers machine, it’s going to become part of your daily routine, as is tinkering with the grind settings and perfecting a milk froth.
In use over the past weeks we have been really pleased with our coffee creations but I feel we will still be learning for a while longer, it does get used every day and the ground coffee aroma gets me started every day.
At the current price it’s a considered purchase, we love it and we will be using it for years to come.
*update I got a Discover coffee whole bean pack (B07DCDG82L) as a gift recently which I’ve been using with this machine, first rate, I think I’m becoming a coffee snob*
Firstly, this is a wonderfully compact machine. The engineering is great, with minimal bits and pieces to have to deal with. This is something that I’ve found lets a lot of bean-to-cup machines down, in that they’re so complex and fiddly that after the novelty wears off (and quickly), they just gather dust. There’s no such issue with this machine.
Operation is very straightforward, as is any cleaning pre- or post-use.
My biggest irk, which was overcome, is that it does take a bit of learning to find out where the bean-grinding settings and the use of the steam wand will suit the taste you’re going for. Our first few tries made me feel as if I were in at mid-range Frankfurt business hotel coffee machine–too bitter, too hot, no froth. But once you get a hang of things in terms of what the change to grind size does to the taste of the coffee, it becomes wonderful. Persevere.
A note: They provide two parcels of beans to get you started. It’s a nice gesture, but step one is to throw them in the bin. Then go get some from a place you know and/or trust. The result is so much better.
This is very smart looking and easy to set up machine that produces delicious espresso with a lovely crema. The instructions are quite clear and we were producing delicious little espresso coffees within 20 minutes. We are having more trouble mastering the milk steamer, the first time we used it we got foam no problem but have had nothing but steamed milk since. Bit hard to tell when hot enough, just going by feeling the outside of the mug. I expect we will get the hang of it. It also requests a lot of end of day cleaning and running water through so will have to develop new habits. I do like it but as with any bean to cup machine you need to sacrifice a bit of time to fiddle and get things just how you like them. Comes with 2 little packets of coffee beans in different flavours to start you off.
Makes great coffee , with the milk frothier it is coffee shop grea
After learning how to operate this Dualit machine, we are enjoying using it to produce good quality coffees at home. However, this process of learning about it properly has taken a couple of weeks.
I would say that buying this coffee machine best suits the kind of people who are willing to actually read an instruction manual and then try various tweaks and different settings in order to create a coffee that suits you. If you don’t read the manual and allow that you will need to do some tweaking over at least multiple cups of coffee, then you may end up producing poor quality coffee and end up feeling frustrated!
After unboxing, the first thing you have to do is carefully assemble the various parts. This is not at all difficult, but you do need to pay attention to some of the details – for example there is an infuser that might be damaged if you were to put it into a dishwasher.
The very first time we used the Dualit, it took us about 15 minutes of reading the manual and following the steps and diagrams before we got our first cup of so-so coffee. For example, before using the machine for the first time, you have to do a “manual rinse” to make sure that the nozzles are clean. (You also need to do this manual rinse at the end of each day in order to prevent the build up of either coffee residue or mould.)
The manual and diagrams outline all of the steps required in order to produce espresso or longer coffee drinks. There is also advice of course on how to use the milk wand to steam and froth the milk. However, we found that it actually took us several weeks to find settings to get the coffee and milk both looking and tasting right. In particular, the Dualit machine comes with an option to change the grind size (so that the beans are ground into either finer or coarser particles). The manual does explain that too coarse a grind and the coffee will taste weak; too fine a grind may taste bitter. However, we found that different people in our family actually like different grind sizes. So this is the kind of thing that you will definitely need to play around with in order to find the right settting for you.
We also had to learn how to use the milk wand to froth the milk, which is not as easy as it sounds. The manual says that you need to listen to the sound of the frothing – that when the frothing noise becomes quieter, that means that the milk is ready. In our early days, we tended to oversteam the milk, meaning that it was blazingly hot but not very frothy. Again, a bit of patience was needed to learn how to do this (and some family members were definitely more willing to be patient than others!)
Also, it was kind of Dualit to supply two bags of beans. But buying our own beans was definitely a good idea as we chose to buy beans from shops where we had previously enjoyed the coffee. We as a family found that the Dualit-provided beans were a bit too dark and bitter a roast for our tastes.
This Dualit machine is not a gadget that should be neglected. There is an 18-step cleaning process that needs to be done at the end of each day. Actually, some of the steps take only seconds and the whole process only a few minutes. But if you’re the kind of forgetful or easy-going person who doesn’t like to follow manufacturer’s instructions, then this machine may not be for you. I can easily see how the machine could quickly rust or otherwise fall into disrepair if you should fail to empty the coffee grinds, wipe down the inside of the machine and clear the various nozzles.
Overall, we’re having fun using this machine. It takes a few minutes every morning to set up and a few minutes to clean and close down at night. But if you are willing to put in that investment, then this for us has been a fun way to enjoy our favourite coffee beans at home.
We’ve been very happily using a big and cranky Delongi bean-to-cup machine for years now. It makes great coffee but it’s the size of a small microwave and hogs a lot of worktop space. I was a bit cautious when replacing that with the much smaller Dualit, worried that they would have had to compromise significantly in order to get the the size down so dramatically. The good news, and it’s all good news with this machine, is that they absolutely haven’t compromised. The space saving appears to have been achieved by eliminating any wasted space inside the machine and bringing the infuser mechanism around to the side rather than running across the front of the unit.
If you’ve lived with glorious noisy and brittle bean to cup machines at home you’ll know that design is largely secondary; you pretty much just want your espresso hit and that’s it. Here though, design is simply gorgeous; materials are harmonious together and constructed of high grades. It looks fantastic and feels amazing in operation; smooth and reliable. No doubt the infuser and internals will need similar levels of care and cleaning but the machine will look good while you do it.
We did a bunch of side-by-side taste tests and the Dualit produced coffee every bit as good as it’s larger rival, with consistently strong crema and good deep levels of taste. It’s a straightforward process to get great espresso here: fill the water tank, fill the bean hopper, set the grind (once you work out your favorite grind size, you’ll rarely adjust this again) and press a button. Moments later a hot and good espresso arrives.
There’s the usual array of alternative options; two shot sizes (which you can alter to taste from 30ml to 250ml per coffee grind with a memory function) and a double shot option. Milk duties are straightforward and of the wand variety – heat some steam, light goes on and you bring a jug of milk up to the wand, steam goes in and you get both hot milk and frothed milk really easily. Like all similar machines, using the milk function does mean a bit of cleaning each time but again that’s very simple and easy.
The thermoblock heats up very fast and makes heating cups with a little hot water easy. Temperature and speed of heating was one of the areas we thought a smaller machine might struggle with but no; it’s fast and good and hot.
We’ve run various varieties of beans through the machine and had consistently outstanding coffee as a result. The Dualit looks fantastic and occupies far less precious worksurface real estate than similar bean to cup machines. It’s a good price too relative to some of the alternatives. Feels so well made too; everything clunks together with satisfying solidity. A pleasure to use and a pleasure to drink coffee from.
UPDATE***
We’ve been using the Dualit for five months now and I wanted, over my morning coffee, to report in: the machine has continued to run perfectly and we’ve had a huge number of coffees from it. It’s been much easier to clean, and much cleaner in operation itself, than our previous Delongi bean-to-cup machine. No hitches at all and the coffee has been flawless. Massively impressed still and can very highly recommend.
I love coffee but can’t really push my budget. This just uses modern pods. New aluminum pods for environmental friendliness. And a great easy coffee
A fantastic product with all the features of a full sized machine. Makes excellent coffees after you have mastered the functions and is like having a coffee shop in your kitchen. Classic design, solid build quality and a strong pump delivery that serves a rich crema to your cup
I had a Gagia Baby machine which broke after 14 months. This was a cheaper replacement and has lasted far longer than I’d ever have expected. I think 6 years is pretty good. I regularly descale it and it’s been sent away for servicing once only.
I love a good cup of coffee so First and foremost – it makes excellent espresso. So I’m very happy with the Dualit machine . Milk foams etc less good – but can make latte – capuchino is harder in my humble opinion.
I have put some very pricey coffees in this machine and they have all tasted as good as can be expected I.e. not as good as with a commercial grinder or machine – but not enough difference to merit splashing out a few grand on a different machine.
Would I buy another one? Possibly – but most likely would buy one with dual boiler.
No complaints other than one negative – a noisy pump. But that could just be my machine.
Switched from a Delonghi which was a good machine and this is on par with it. I mainly use it to make a latte, the milk steamer is easy to use but a little tricky to clean at the top without a small brush.
Not tried the tea function so can’t comment on that.
Someone else mentioned you need lots of space above the machine to get the water container out, you don’t, all you need is s few centimetres the pull it out sideways.
Very attractive and functional design. Can use ground coffee, or ESE pods (bit like tea bags full of coffee), or mini pods similar to nespresso ones. I haven’t yet tried other pods but the machine comes with a pod piercer which enables you to use pods which are the same shape as designed for but not pierced so in theory pretty much all mini nespresso-type pods are useable
A good machine though this was my third machine as the first two were duds. Doesn’t say a lot about Dualits quality . Produces good espresso. Used dualit pods and filter coffee. It does tend to go through a lot of water to cool itself down.
My trusty old Dualit 84009 gave up after 16 years faultless service so I was looking for a replacement to produce my favoured espresso hits to the same standard, I use both fresh ground coffee and ESE pods when time is short. After trialling a few other manufacturers offerings which were all somewhat underwhelming I ordered this despite the generally mediocre reviews and I am pleased to say that so far so good and I’m very impressed.
The machine is reassuringly weighty and well styled with all the functions easily accessed from the front and top, no fumbling around the back for the power switch and the water tank is a decent size too.
The temperature and dosing adjustments work really well ensuring the coffee produced is exactly how you like it, every time.
Using your preferred fresh ground coffee is obviously best, produced with a perfect crema and piping hot. My normal ESE pods also give a very satisfying espresso without the prep and mess and most surprisingly I find the Dualit and compatible Nespresso pods also give a very enjoyable espresso, the machine comes with the capsule piercing tool for non Dualit capsules, Nespresso capsules work just fine when pierced before use.
I don’t use the milk frother and live in a very soft water area so cannot comment on the steaming aspect nor the descaling requirements other than confirm that a small stainless steel milk jug was included in the box.
Assuming this machine proves reliable it will be a keeper and I am really enjoying the coffee it makes, now realising how worn out the pump on my old machine had become.
Excellent build quality, lovely coffee, but do read the instructions first!
It’s a good product with a good design and I clan do the real espressi.
Amazing product for a perfect cup of coffee I thoroughly recommend i
I’ve had this machine now for well over 2years.As long as you descale it regularly (I live in a very hard water area) it works perfectly. I do have to empty the spill tray quite regularly too as this fill up as well as the coffee dispensing in the cup.otherwise I’ve had no problems with i
I was a bit reluctant to purchase as there were a few negative reviews. I’ve now had the machine a few weeks and absolutely love it. It makes excellent coffee either when I use ground or ESE pods. Definitely worth the money.
When did so many people get brainwashed into thinking Nespresso capsules were the be all and end all for coffee? I’d have thought if you wanted to use the resource-wasting-uneconomical-unecofriendly-not-particularly-special-tasting-Nespresso pods, a Nespresso machine would do the job, no?
We bought this after our previous Dualit machine finally gave up the ghost after years and years of good service. It was repaired twice (something that is easy and cheap with Dualit, not so with most other brands), and even after being in Italy (my wife is Italian), we can’t wait to get home to have what is usually a far superior coffee.
For the people who don’t like the taste, try better coffee, maybe?
This machine can be set for the amount and temperature you want, so all you need to do is switch the machine and wait (oooh, it may be as long as a minute). I defy anyone to make me a better espresso, cappuccino, or flat white than this machine can make.
Hi I am writing this review about the Dualit Espress-auto 4 in 1 . Compact, chrome and black it fits our kitchen decor quite nicely without imposing upon the work space available. I quite like the fact that I can make tea or coffee from the one machine , which make the kettle a little redundant. Coffee capsule, ESE coffee pods , ground coffee and tea capules…it has a holder or attachment for them allowance makes coffee or tea just right to suit your time. Ground coffee when you fancy your hand at being a Batista, ESE pods when you want cheap convenience and pods when you want lazy but great coffee. The tea capsule are just icing on the cake…why boil a kettle and wait for the tea to cool down when your Espress-auto makes it at just the right temp for drinking. It’s a great machine, easy to use, easy to clean, quick to warm up, reasonable to buy…and so versatile… the only down side that I can think of…i find it a little noise. Amazon great price and delivery, but when are you going to through in a 2 year guarantee like JW . Thanks Chris from Broxbourne April 17
Bought this as a replacement for our filter coffee machine which recently died. Had no idea coffee machine choices had become so varied these days… particularly if you want something that has the added convenience of doing ‘pod’ or ‘capsule’ type coffee… but after having done a bit of homework, I decided to go for this as it seems to do everything we need, especially once we realised that we don’t just make ‘pots of coffee’ anymore.
Okay… so have to admit, some of this decision was brand-driven – we have a couple of Dualit products that have been bulletproof and there’s [so far] no reason why this won’t follow form – but largely it was down to the compatibility with ESE and [sort of] Nespresso (useful for giving visitors a decent cup of Joe)… as well as being able to use all the many-available ground coffees without having to fill a filter up. Also a big hit with the kids as this one can froth milk up a treat so they’re loving the ‘Bambichinos’ in the mornings.
Easy to use. Easy to clean. And it makes fantastic coffee. Very impressed.
I’ve had my machine nearly a year now and love it. The downside would be that without manipulation you can on the whole only use the NX capsules in it.
I only drink decaf and Dualit was only a strength 3-4 so i’ve stuck with my Lavazza ground decaf which is really good quality strong flavorful coffee, I’ve also tried an organic brand Cru Kafe pods which work just as well, taste better but no stronger than Dualit pods.
Recentlyi noticed that their decaf is now strength 6 so i placed a new order. However the pods have been redesigned, quite clearly in an effort to work better in Nespresso machines. The result is that they no longer work in my 4-1 machine! I contacted Dualit who are sending me a gadget to pierce the capsule (which according to their website should be used for all Dualit, M&S and Nespresso pods).
My complaint is that i shouldn’t have to pierce a pod made by Dualit for its own brand machine. They won their court case with Nespresso, but to now change the design to more suit Nespresso than its own customers is just not on! I’m still giving the machine 5 stars as i do love it sitting there in my kitchen and it makes good coffee, but if their piercer works for Nespresso i’ll be moving over to their pods as the Nespresso range is far far greater than Dualits choice of 4.
I have just ordered my 5th box of filters for this machine, that I bought just over a year ago, therefore I’ve made over 1000 mugs of coffee with this machine in twelve months and it is working just as well as it did when I first bought it.
I’m kind of surprised by some of the reviews on here which seem to go something along the lines of: “If you don’t use this the way it was designed to be used, it won’t work properly”.
This coffee machine is really easy to use, makes delicious, hot coffee, froths the milk excellently (both soya and cow’s milk) and is probably the best gadget I ever bought when I consider how much it has improved my day to day life in such a simple way.

update on 27th October 2017 (nearly one year on from my initial review) and the same machine is still going strong. I reckon, going on how many filters I’ve bought on here) it’s now made 2,750 mugs of delicious, hot coffee without a hiccup or a glitch.

update 30th December 2018, another year on and another 1,000+ filters used and still going strong.

update 4th October 2019 – coffee-licious.
Best birthday present ever could be sitting having a coffee in a caf on the Riviera
2nd one we’ve had tried the Heston 500 machine but much preferred the Dualit machine it’s simplicity itself.
Excellent machine does all functions well and is easy to use. In answer to the question does it take Nespresso pods, yes it does but as others have said you need to pierce the capsules which is a bit fiddly, and why would you bother when Dualit do a good rang of pods themselves, the teas, especially the green tea is particularly good. I bought it mainly to use with ground coffee which is great. If your main concern is use of Nespresso pods maybe your looking at the wrong machine.
Having just said goodbye to my third Delonghi machine (they only last a couple of years before they start leaking) I thought I would try this Duallit. First impressions are excellent. I use ese pods and they produce a fantastic espresso with this machine. It’s very quiet too. And looks good in my kitchen. Hope it will outlast Delonghi too – seems to be very well built.
Contrary to some negative reviews on this here,I am going to shoot-from-the-hip on this one to protect the reputation of this machine.
This machine is the best I have ever had. It is suitable for fresh ground coffee for one cup or two and two types of pod and even brews tea.
You don’t have to use the filter papers, just clean the basket and filter when it has gone cold and keep it clean. I have owned Espresso machines since 1968 when I got a Brevetti of Milan Mochapot stove top machine. I’ve had La Pavoni; Breville; Krups; Gaggia and bean-cup-machines. All the computerized touch-response machines broke down out of warranty and I can say that some rusted away from poor quality steel in drip-trays and even in the base electrics underneath corroded.
This Dualit has a rust-proof drip-tray made of strong plastic and a stainless steel platform. The coffee it makes is superb whether doing own blend and grinding the beans or the two types of pod give a really good strength and colour with full ‘crema’ on the top. The coffee taste texture and flavour beats coffee shop’s output hands-down. Smooth with a toffee-like roundness. The frother works well and very quickly gets the milk frothed up and heated to 60 optimum.
I warm the cups up first either with hot tap water or from the steam spout dispensing near boiling water. There is so little to go wrong. Simple manual knob to deliver the water through the head. What’s to not like? The components are beautifully designed to take pods and there’s a separate basket and handle for single-cup ground coffee or two-cups with small and large filter for each. Finally there’s no boiler to go wrong as it works like a combi-boiler or the old style multi-point water-heaters – heating the water on demand for dispensing it. I am going to confidently recommend this machine to anyone who wants good tasting coffee without complications as it really is pretty well foolproof. Although it’s made in China it is overseen by the British team that designed it and they control the production and product quality. It’s good, very good and I feel it will go on working well if I look after it and keep it clean. To get proper espresso; cappuccino; latte; flat whites; black coffee or brewing tea or making hot chocolate, you can’t beat this for quality at this price.
I bought this machine as Dualit are good quality machines, this one is heavily built, this is obviously why it costs more. The coffee is excellent, smooth, at the correct temperature which is essential for coffee, easy to clean and doesn’t take ages to warm up. Considering the cost of major High St. coffee retailers this wins hands down, the range of coffees and coffee pods and teas means you can indulge yourself without leaving home.
Makes great espresso and milk frother is easy to use.
Excellent coffee (not used pods yet just real coffee). Once you get used to the machine and find your preferred type/strength of coffee this is excellent. Would recommend in fact parent are now buying one and ditching their coffee machine and I’m going to get another for our holiday home. Froths milk very well although we did buy a thermometer to get right temp. You can make drink after drink with this after the first 40 seconds warm up.
This is a great coffee machine at a brilliant price point. I had looked at several machines before opting for this one and it was a good decision to make.
You can make espressos, lattes, americanos and a variety of teas with a variety of pod styles or ground coffee.
The machine is versatile and suitable for everyday use, unlike previous machines I have had!
I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a quick coffee maker with a barista feel!
This is a fantastic machine and as stated in another review ignore the fact it says you cannot use nespresso pods as you can. I made smll holes with knife and flattened to look like compatible ones ad worked perfect. Also used the PG range to with no issues. Basically you can use any pod you want. Highly recommend this machine and i have only had it a matter of hours. Coffee gets very hot as does the frother so no issues with temperature. Just about to buy another one for my holiday home.
It’s a good machine, but I had to learn how to use it.
It took me a few attempts before I managed to produce a coffee that was just how I like it and, because I didn’t want to be locked in to drinking a particular brand of coffee, I was a bit disappointed to discover it really only takes Dualit NX capsules.
If you want to drink other brands of coffee, you can do that with ground coffee and ESE pods but it doesn’t seem to be possible to drink Nespresso.
Now that I have got to know this machine, I am happy with it.
Good machine reasonable price but need to train yourself to get the best out of it.
Great. Exactly what we wanted as doesn’t require the use of dreadful capsules!
Really excellent. Fritter works really wel and adjustable for different types of froth. Not noisy and experiences no problems. Really pleased
Fantastic, and Came The Next Day, A Sunday. Works A Treat.
My husband bought me this as a present in 2013 and I love it! Its simple great. Yes you should use filter papers (cheap to buy off the internet) but I really don’t mind when you get a clean, tasty non-gritty cup of coffee. I have two young children, so this has been used ALOT especially after sleepless nights. Leave it to heat up whilst making toast/ getting cereal etc and you will get a really hot drink from it. Easy to use ESP pods (again decent ones are easily accessible on the internet, not so much from the supermarket) or ground coffee (though make sure you don’t overfill/ press the coffee to firmly into the adaptor or the heated water won’t make it through the coffee into your cup!), I highly recommend this machine.
Very good, very stylish, easy to use and British what more could you ask for , also makes excellent coffee.
This is proving to be a really good coffee machine, helping me make very nice capuccino’s. Make sure that the coffee isn’t ground too fine, because the flow through the coffee holders will be too slow and the unit will trip out on overheat. Also, keep on top of cleanliness to avoid leaks from the coffee holder gasket. Milk frother is very good, once you get the ‘barista’ knack. Very rapid warm up is a bonus. The top plate for warming cups does get a bit warm, keep your hands off!
I’d buy another.
For what its worth to all.I am going to purchase the Dualit and I found a very cheap way to keep the baskets clear .I use “the round tea bags ” I make a large mug of tea each day ,using two tea bags in a tea pot .I empty the tea from the bags into the pot and then I use the tamper to cut around the empty tea bags and I have four filters.AS I do not have any trouble with my baskets I just use 1 filter on top of the coffee in the basket and tamp down .It keeps the shower head clean and does not clog up with the used coffee grinds. So with the dualit you can put the filter into the basket before the coffee ,that should keep the basket from clogging up.
The companies selling the paper filters won’t like to read this “but” I don’t care and of course people of today can’t be all doing this but I’m sure they are old codgers like me may try it .Hope my input is not a bore
Quite impressed with this coffee maker though I have mainly used the pods. The plastic part that holds the pods did break however but I don’t have any problem with this as I trust amazon to sort this. I have only made one cup of coffee using the filters and ground coffee but it works fine.
I have still to master frothy milk but practice makes perfect. Don’t know what I did before having this machine.
It does make a noise when pumping out the coffee but it is not for long so I don’t see that as a problem either. Just a feature of getting a decent coffee.
This machine works quite well with ESE coffee pods and NX capsules (which are not the same as Nespresso). Performance with ground coffee is, however, a let down. First, you have to use filter papers or risk clogged and un-cleanable filter cups. Secondly, no matter how rough or finely ground your coffee and however light or heavy you tamp the coffee into the filter cup, odds on you’ll get a very poor flow rate, a burnt taste, a poor crema and a need for hot milk (which this machine does do well) to warm the cup back up to the right temperature. I am not the only one to experience this. A quick web search should turn up at least one professional review identifying a similar problem with a later model of Dualit machine.
While I’d be the first to say that the build seems ostensibly more robust than any other machine I’ve seen for similar money, that counts for little when it can’t make a decent cup of coffee. A shame, because Dualit has very good staff on its customer support lines.
UPDATE
After 2 months of fighting this machine for a good cup of ground coffee, it has now come good. All I’ve done differently is left the machine to warm up 3 times longer than the instructions in the manual indicated I should. It has made a real difference and I get a good or very good cup every time.
I have had similar machines years ago but bought this one for the 3 in 1 features.
It makes great espressos and is quick to heat up and easy to clean.
“Real” coffee is a bit of a faf, but the results are more than worth it.
I have tried the machine with ESE pods, for quickness, and they make a great cup with less hassle.
Milk frother works a treat.
I can get a small mug under the dispenser for a larger coffee.
I have heard of filter clogging issues, so use filter papers with ground coffee and so far have had no problems.
At the end of the day I strip it down and clean it, only takes a few minutes.
Overall I am 100% happy.
When I make an “instant” at work, the Monday after a weekend of “real” coffee, it tastes horrible.
I bought the Dualit mainly because of their toasters, which have a deservedly excellent reputation. Also, it is not styled to look like a space rocket or disco. The espresso is excellent. Of course, all machines that deal with real coffee, as opposed to George Clooney, make something of a mess, because of the drips. It is a high-maintenance hobby. But this is a good machine.
My old Gaggia Cubika finally gave up after nearly eight years of excellent service, and I struggled with what I would buy as a replacement. The Dualit machines have good write-ups, and I took the decision to replace with the Dualit 84440. The 3-1 functionality is great, and the machine produces an excellent expresso. Am hoping that it will serve me as long as the trusty Gaggia – and on first impressions – it looks well made and robust.
