OK its chinese, it will never be a Rhode and Schwarz but for a quick test to see that the dBa of the alarms is in the right ball park, it does it quite well. Nicely built. Could do with a protective case with it and for the money, even a slip cover would be good. Fortunately I had the box my previous meter came in that was replaced with this one after it died. Overall a reasonable tool
Has made my movie listening far better after using this to dial in my 5.1.4 Atmos setup
I purchased this meter because it has both an “A” and “C” weighting response ( I needed the C weighting}.
The meter works well and the display is easy to read.
Easy to use, instructions clearly written, good quality device, sturdy, well made
The right feature set for measuring machine noise levels at a reasonable price.
I used it to determine which tool was dangerously too loud.
I used it also for the church music sound level to keep sound under the danger point.
Works well.
Bought this because of a noisy neighbor above my apartment. Local police department uses it so I bought to be able to obtain same readings they would get if (when) I have to make a noise complaint.
It would be nice if it had a wifi ability so it could obtain its own date/time stamp to create a noise record. Right now, I have to hold my smartphone beside it to show date/time when I start measuring. Not a big deal, but a nice to have. I have to make the video anyway, so I live.
Does what i need it to do and performs as the manufacturer claims. Quality seems as decent as any other similar gadget.
Es una gran herramienta de medicin; exacto, verstil y robusto. No te quiebres la cabeza buscando cual es la mejor opcin, sta es tu mejor opcin.
Excellent Sound Meter. This meter measures sounds of 40-130 decibels. Works very well. It comes with a foam ball which is added on the top of the mic for better sound absorption. It has to methods of measuring decibels A weighting and C Weighting. C is for sounds generated by machinery.
I have an older DB meter that does straight readings. I was looking for something that I could use for averaging and finding peak volumes so I gave this a try. It’s not at all expensive, is easy to use, and seems to work correctly. I have a high end calibrated source for my older meter, and when I tried it on the Extech it read exactly the correct value. So in a static situation the meter is very accurate. While I don’t have any way to test it for peak or average readings, I’m guessing that it’s probably pretty darn close. I plan on using this for measuring shop machine noise levels, and also for monitoring sound levels for the PA for a jazz band I play in. If you need a DB meter, this one will do a good job at a great price.
I am well pleased of the quality of this product and the difference it makes in our worship center.
A / V installer now makes my home theater installs sound amazing
It’s a good device, just the case it’s a problem. We need more protection. If you want protect your equipment it’s necessary to buy it in other shop and make one special for the device.
Did what we needed to do with this. Worked out great. The CEO of our company needed confirmation of what would be the best alternative for soy prodding his office. This helped us determine the best scenario. All went well.
Nice meter with great features for the price range. Typical Extech quality and function.
This is a very good decibel meter. As a mobile disc jockey, this comes in quite handy to make sure that music is playing at an appropriate sound level for the audience.
Works well for the price-point. Does not have the features of higher cost meters, but for checking on noise complaints it is a good buy.
Ordered 3 units as a basic test tools, all work well and I’ve had no issues.
Awesome product. Kept our company, dB down (db-down.com) out of the dog house at the NAMM show.
For the price this meter works as expected. It would have been nice if a fitted case was included, even if only genuine plastic, this meter does take care of basic noise metering .
easy to use. not sure if not having a calibration device is going to serious impact accuracy
I also used this to point out to my wife that the home theater stereo wasn’t too loud to do hearing damage. I then pointed out that her yelling at me at how loud the stereo was actually WAS loud enough to do hearing damage (90db!) and that she should probably volume down. Yeah, that didn’t go over so well. I don’t recommend using this for spouse volume testing. But for stereo equipment matching, oh yeah, it rocks for that.
Auto mode not much use unless just measuring constant background noise. Manual modes OK.
It works very well and showed results that I didn’t think that the situation would remain the same.
Excellent unit. Well made, easy to use. Only minor dislike is auto off. I buy the batteries, I decide when it goes off.
Verry good instrument for the price. Not apprpraiate instrument for longterm sound studies. Would reccomend for simple sound testing. Good buy.
I installed a new set of column speakers (JBL CBT100LA) in a new church and used the
SPL meter to check sound levels in the room before and after the installation.
The meter was very sensitive and quite responsive. The combined digital
and analogue meter readout is a great feature. Few low priced SPL meters
have this feature. No problems with the meter so far.
Thanks!

The first one arrived missing a table in the battery compartment and didn’t work. I exchanged it with no effort and the new unit works as expected. Handy lil guy and smaller than I expected (9″‘s long). I wish it had a case or pouch but I’ll toss it in an old mic pouch and in the gig bag. It has an auto off feature which should keep me from running the batteries out by mistake. Very happy with it for the cost.
The device works great. Two things that it does not have are a backlight for dark environments (concerts, shows, etc.), and it also has a very pesky auto-off function so the battery does not drain. If this device did not have these, it would be perfect in my opinion. Still works great though!
Accurate, straight forward operation. Simple to use and easily read meter for sound levels. Great for testing occupational sound levels and machinery near personnel.
Extechs decibel digital sound meter is simple to use. The digital read out is large enough to see easily, fits comfortably in one hand and the keys are easy to reach with my thumb. Leaving my other hand free.
I bought the meter to check the noise of Pickleball and traffic in the community where I live. It works fine and I was able to measure all the sound in and around the courts.
So far this meter seems to be working alright enough. We have used this on numerous occasions: checking noise level of a window air conditioner to determine if there was any way to dampen the noise level via adding various barriers around window; checking noise level of mowers, tractor, and weed eaters – though we always wear some sort of protective ear gear (plugs or muffs). By measuring equipment we use /have on hand, this gives us a more realistic idea as to what level of noise reduction we want to target / pay for with future replacement or other “noise producing” equipment. I could use this in my business, as I believe the quality is sufficient for the purposes of a very “limited” sound survey.
One of my 2 favorite simple tools. This and a stopwatch can really shutdown some complaints before they get very far.
1. It’s noisier than any of the other ones, and 2. It’s taking longer than before… ah, science to the rescue.
After buying a cheap SL meter, I was looking for a better model that offered the ability to do Slow response and able to be calibrated. This one fit the bill and works great.
If you purchase it new in packaging, it comes with batteries, which was a nice bonus, and the windscreen does help when you’re in an area with gusting a/c or things moving. He did say that it might read just a tiny bit high, but not so much that you can’t get accurate readings. He’s been playing with it all week testing everything from car highway noise to heavy duty machinery at work and has found that it reads quickly, accurately and the memory function is quite useful. It’s a “nice blend of not too sensitive and sensitive enough to work well”.
I would highly recommend the meter, considering how much fun he’s had with it. Great buy!
Not as user friendly as I had hoped and the on/off power button does not turn the power off instantaneously.
I use this device to measure sound pressure generated by my PA sound systems. This device can also be used to verify that you are staying within legal limits regarding noise abatement laws. If you do a lot of sound work, you should get one. They are very easy to use, and can ‘remember’ maximum readings if necessary. Definitely Five Stars!
This product works well and they shipped it to me on time. I have no problems with it. I like it.
ool works excellent-exactly as described,we use it at a dealership-quality is good and is easy to use for all techs
Amatr iler ve hobi iin gayet yeterli bir cihaz. Fikir vermek iin kullanlabilir. fiyat / fayda orano bence olduka yksek. Tavsiye ederim
This device was designed as a temporary or moment-to-moment metering device. Individuals who have the need to trap data and transfer a stream to a computer record should look for a different type of tool or a device with a larger set of metering abilities.
The company delivers the device in calibrated condition, of course, but is inconsistent in its recommendation for calibration through time. In the accompanying user guide, recalibration is recommended before every use, especially if the instrument has not been used for some time. On the company’s web site, recalibration is recommended once a year. Recalibration requires an additional device; Extech offers one that costs twice as much as the meter itself. Independent professionals or employees of sound analysis services won’t be bothered by the expense, but casual users of the device may find that to be a large pill to swallow to keep a tool tuned up that is used only now and then.
I metered a television broadcast whose volume was set in the overlap zone for the device’s high and low ranges and found the readings to be pretty much in agreement — perhaps 1-2 dB apart. This was a rough eyeball comparison, not a serious attempt to determine the meter’s consistency. My verdict is that the unit is easily good enough for occasional private party use and even quick professional determinations to guide expectations in a context where more extensive noise level studies are planned.
I need the meter for reference purposes. The meter is of good quality and works well. I have no way of knowing if it is perfectly accurate, but I don’t need it to be perfect. I have it on a tripod for testing motorcycle exhaust noise. It works very well for what I use it for.
As a camp director I was faced with people complaining that the band was too loud. I used this meter to prove to them that the band was within a safe volume range. They stopped complaining that it was too loud. If the band had been too loud (according to the meter), I would have asked them to turn their volume down.
It works well in a crowd of 100 for the sound system. It is serving its purpose just fine. Fast Shipping. Thank You
This product works as expected. If you have a loud talker in your office this works great to let them know.
Seems like a quality product. Works for the purpose I wanted it for. Would recommend it to others looking for next step up from the $25 versions.
We recommend the Digital Sound Level Meter. It worked great for us. It measured the noise level we wanted to test.
Needed an economical, easy-to-use sound meter for my purposes. This one fits the bill very well. Simple, but sensitive – love the ability to measure over time and it remembers the high and low values
as I have diminished hearing from military duty and Vietnam.
Sort of like getting ‘bundled’ software you didn’t request on a computer. There
are buttons and features that just make the operation a bit more difficult but one
doesn’t have to use them.
Considring the price this instrument measured up nicely against others costing nearly 10 times the amount. Was certainly adequate for what are using it for.
This a nice sound level for the price. I have been happy with it so far. I have used it on and off for the past few months. It is easy to use and read. It is a nice basic sound meter!
Does what it says. Feels solid in your hand. Works very well. Good range of sensitivity. Easy to use. Good features.
It works exactly as expected, but it is a bit bulkier than is probably necessary. It would be nice if there were a directional feature that could be toggled, so you could get a noise level from a particular source or direction.
Easy to set up, works well. Was shipped promtly. Unit can be calibrated by Mfr if you need an official reading.
This was the cheapest sound level meter I found with an accuracy of +/- 2%.
My meter read about 1.5db to 2db below the contest directors meter, close enough.
Having both the “A” and “C” ratings available to use is a good thing — make sure you know which one you should use for your particular application (I did some basic web research to learn more). It measures 40 dB to 130 dB, and I was surprised to find that 43 dB is about my basic background noise in my yard, no wind but birds chirping.
Also, the “Max Hold” function is great; it keeps the highest rating on the display so if you mount the meter remotely, you can still see what it recorded.
I mounted it on a basic camera tripod and it worked fine. It actually has a metal tripod mounting thread, unlike some (expensive) digital cameras that use plastic.
The only nits I can pick are: 1) The little foam wind sock that sticks over the end is pretty flimsy and it comes off too easily, but not a biggie; and 2) The battery cover is attached with a tiny Phillips head screw, rather than having a cover that simply snaps on. So you’ll need to find a very small #3 Phillips head screwdriver just to remove the batteries, and let’s hope you don’t have to do this at night or in the bush.
It seems well made for what it is — basic plastic case and slightly mushy rubberized push buttons. The display is easy to read (not sure if it has a light, I only used it during the day).
Once you familiarize yourself with the instructions, you pretty much don’t have to bother with them again, it’s that easy to use. The batteries are the el cheapo type that probably have about 25% of the lifespan of a good pair, but otherwise, this is a very nice unit that’s probably way overkill for just recording the neighbor’s late night parties. I used it for a basic scientific research project and published the results and it worked fine for that.
Measure the decibel level of your dog’s bark so that when your neighbors complain–you can say authoritatively: I am sorry and will try to remedy the situation but I measure only 60 decibels at your front door.
Measure the decibel level of your stereo and see how many hours a day you can listen to it without having to save up for a hearing aid. (I don’t think you can measure headphone output with it).
Measure the sound level when your uncle Frank passes wind so you can congratulate him on his new record.
