Fiskars Reel Mower, Lawn mower with contactless cutting system, cutting width: 46 cm, StaySharp Max, Black/Orange/Silver, 1000591

Cutting force

The StaySharp Max includes a patented chain drive system called Inertia Drive for optimised roller speed and heavier contactless blades for improved mobility and less friction. These unique features make it 60 % easier to drive than other cylinder mowers. The StaySharp Max can easily be adapted to your lawn and preferences. Adjust the cutting height from 2.5 cm to 10 cm with 7 gears and 1.25 cm every step, adjust the handle height for more comfort and change the direction of the grass cut in no time.

Sharp blades

The design of the StaySharp Cylinder Mower spindle is unique. The blades of the mower are made of hardened steel and do not touch each other. This makes them particularly robust, durable and prevents grass from getting caught. They can be sharpened if necessary. The energy is stored by the rotation of the spindle and released when required. The spindle cutting system should be checked before the first use and afterwards regularly by means of a rotation test to see whether the blades touch.

Easy operation, excellent stability and perfect cutting edges

The handle of the StaySharp models is height-adjustable and equipped with a non-slip rubber coating so that a comfortable posture can be adopted and a safe working method ensured. The four wheels offer perfect stability compared to conventional 2-wheel hand machines. In combination with the blades, which extend across the entire width of the mower, they help to reach missed patches and tricky edges next to sidewalks, fences and foundations. A Fiskars grass catcher basket is also available separately (Art. No.: 1000592).

I have a lot of grass in several areas and been thinking about a push mower for sometime. I usually use an industrial Honda petrol mower. I bit the bullet and bought the biggest and most expensive one I could find (Life lesson, always buy the best tools you can afford). First time out it was so easy to use and a lovely cut, Plus it’s a stealth mower (silent). It was actually quicker to do all my grass using this instead of the petrol mower, by the time I’d have got that out and set it up.
Only gripe is that the instructions came in German and took some finding the right ones online so I could adjust the blades correctly before using it. I’d say that this is suitable for fairly large areas of grass as long as it’s even and no stones, etc.
Very well made and robust bit of kit. I’m happy with it.

As easy as using a walk behind petrol mower, but far more pleasant.
Can handle my1000sqms of lawns without any problem. Even cuts damp grass.
I’m 60+ and it’s just like going for a brisk walk, gentle exercise while getting a gardening chore done.

Firstly, although the ad for this item above says Made in Finland, mine arrived in a box saying Made in China.
The grass catcher has some woffle on it saying Made in China to Fiskars exacting standards.
If you think you are getting something made in Europe, then think again… it’s Chinese.
That already puts something of a dent in the claims to environmentally friendly this and that. No it was made on the other side of the world, probably by people who are paid a fraction of Finnish wages, and is then shipped from there.

Out of the box there is some assembling to do.
The instructions are no more than a few diagrams, and it took a bit of figuring out getting the handle attached – about 30 minutes in my case.

The mower is heavy. I can lift it up to carry it down a few stairs, but you wouldn’t want to carry it far and some people might struggle to get it into the boot of a car, for example.

It does cut grass – that’s for sure.
I found that with the catcher on, the catcher filled every 30 meters or less, and I was constantly detaching it and emptying it. That itself is a bit of a pain, as it has hooks and screw-on catches to hold it in place.
Another problem was that unless you are progressing at some speed the grass is not thrown to the back of the catcher, but accumulates at the front, soon spilling over and clogging the blade.
I found I was stopping frequently to clear the grass from the cutting edge.
And then having to turn the mower on its side to clear more.

I noticed that it does not tackle long grass too well. I found that long grass simply gets bowled over, without being cut.

Thick, wet grass is REALLY hard going with this mower. It accumulates behind the edge of the foil against which the blades rotate and the gap between the two rapidly gets blocked, whereupon the mower jams.

On short, dry grass it works very well.
I guess if you have time, and the right weather, and you can cut every few days, this will do a very good job, but once the grass is more than a couple of inches, you’re better off doing two passes, the first with the mower raised and a second finer cut.

On flat surfaces it’s easy to push, but on slopes, particularly on rough ground, it is hard work.
It is wide, not very maneuverable, and heavy. It doesn’t cut in reverse, so you can only cut going forward.

I found that you really needed to work up some speed for the best results. On short grass, with the catcher discarded, and at a jog, the best cut was obtained.

My overall verdict was that this is a pretty solid piece of kit, but if you are looking for a lightweight, carefree, spin around the lawn, this will not meet your expectations. It’s hard work.
If you are prepared for a good work-out, then you won’t be disappointed.

In any event, after struggling for a year or two with a battery powered mower, I think I prefer the Fiskars. It is quiet; there’s no battery, fuel or cable to worry about, and I’m sure it will get me fit.

Final note. I believe there are two different versions of this mower.
I’ve seen some that have a reversible cover, that can send the cuttings flying out the back, but that doesn’t seem to be an option on mine.

This is an excellent mower if a bit expensive for something without a motor. Saying that, it cuts my 1/3 acre of pretty rough grass with far less grief than dragging out the petroleum mower. It is also amazingly quiet. The only short comings I have found so far are that it is quite heavy and the height adjustment is fairly coarse. A half setting between the lowest and the next one up would be nice. On the whole I am very satisfied.

After owning a self-propelled 22″ mulching mower for the last ten years, it finally required replacing. It’s always appealed to me to use a reel mower for that manicured look that’s just not achievable with a rotary mover. For context: My lawn is about 250 square metres with practically no weeds but it’s in Ireland… we have extremely lush, tough grass and it’s considered as one of the most challenging grasses it the world to cut successfully.

When it arrived, it was pretty simple to assemble, four bolts with nuts for the handles and it attaches to the main body with clips. If you can’t assemble this, you shouldn’t be allowed near something with blades 😉

On my first cut, the lawn hadn’t been cut in a few weeks. So first cut I brought it down by a couple of inches. Was easy enough and was pleasantly surprised at how well it cut the lawn. I could have left it at that and been very happy…

Now that the lawn was back under control, I decided to drop the height lower than I’d ever had it cut before. Now this was tough going! I was cutting down about an 1.5″ lower than I’d ever managed with the rotary mover. I was cutting a lot of tangled, unscarified grass. This required a lot of effort and was quiet a work out. In fairness, I was really cutting grass roots and the previous chopped grass at this stage, close to 4″ down from where I’d started. When I’d finished, caught my breath, finished contemplating searching Amazon for a defibrillator and looked back at my lawn… it was glorious! Virtually no discharge on the lawn and it looked manicured! Noticeably manicured too. The grass was cut smoothly, not shredded like a rotary mower. Amazing result!

A week later I’ve cut my lawn twice since… because it’s now so easy to cut! The new growth is effortless to cut and the mower has virtually no resistance to it. As a result I’m cutting the lawn in 15 minutes of calm quietness without even breaking a sweat. The rotary mulching mower to longer to cut it surprisingly.

I love this mower… simple and hassle free to use (no petrol… no engine noise… no pulling that cord and cursing… neighbours are delighted with the lack of noise and profanities) but the quality of the cut is what makes it so special. No rotary mower can finish a lawn like this.

Pity it doesn’t have a roller on it, as the only why it could be improved was to properly strip your lawn.

All in all, fantastic piece of equipment, couldn’t recommend highly enough.

After reviewing lots of mowers (push, electric and petrol) I decided to purchase a Fiskars StaySharp Max. Its probably the best quality push mower you can buy, is more environmentally friendly than other mowers and you’re not having to mess around with any extension cables.

After owning it for several months and cutting my lawns several times per week I think I know enough about it to write a review.

When it’s delivered its shipped in a large box with the handle flat-packed. Making up the handle and attaching it to the mower is fairly easy and I would suspect most wouldn’t have any issues. There is a plastic cover, covering the blades but be mindful once you’ve taken the plastic cover off… The blades will have you’re fingers off! I’ve read reviews criticising the weight as being too light… Ignore them… Its a decent weight and easy to push around. Some people may actually struggle with the weight of it but again for most I would have thought it would be fine. As a push mower it’s reliant on you to move the blades. It does give you a bigger work out than other mowers but for me that was another reason why I bought it. Due to the chain mechanism and the weight its not too difficult to push and it will depend on the length of your grass.

Size wise it is a decent sized unit. Not as long as other mowers but is fairly wide. I have found it to be a bit awkward to manoeuvre and cut right close up to walls and in the corners of the lawn. It does get close to where the lawn meets the wall however not quite close enough so I do need to buy a strimmer to neaten the edges. It’s not an issue for me (typical bloke happy to get some more toys to play with) but it could be a deal breaker for others. It does get fairly close but not quite there.

The quality of cut from this mower is brilliant. I’ve read reviews saying you will struggle to cut long grass and although it may be true for some, if you can get your weight behind it and give it a fair push it cuts grass up no problem! Once you’ve done your first cut with this it will be a lot easier for you.

I’ve found that going around the edges first (the width of two mowers) and then snaking up and down the lawn is the easiest way of using this mower and it gives a great finish (minus a little around the very edge). If you’re after lines on the grass you can achieve them. Granted they are not as sharp as using an electirc/petrol cylinder mower that the professionals use but you can get them.

After reading reviews about the grass catcher I didn’t bother buying one. They sound cr*p and it cuts the grass up that good you don’t need one anyway. All that is needed is a quick sweep on the paths with a brush. Plus leaving the grass cuttings on the grass acts as a little feed for the grass that is left. Also as there is no electric I can go out mowing in the rain

After using this for a few months my lawns look darker and healthier than my neighbours. I’ve got the hang of moving it around and can manage the very edges with a small inexpensive strimmer. I get a nice little work out, it’s easy to store, next to no maintenance, looks good and I can highly recommend it (just read other reviews out there) if your happy with a little extra work than a normal mower than this is the one for you.
