Finally got the chance to try these applewood chunks on the BBQ after the sun managed to stay in the sky for more than an hour or two. On opening the bag I was slightly disappointed by the number of chunks (roughly ten) but impressed by the size of them. The plan was to use them on a traditional kettle-style BBQ and try to impart some extra smoky flavour on various meats and veg.
After allowing the charcoal to burn and settle, I spread the embers and added three chunks of wood. I wasn’t sure how much to use but decided to go for it. I think I could probably have just used one chunk. I have to say that any reservations I had disappeared as soon as I had my first bite of food. Absolutely delicious smoky flavours which were definitely an improvement on what I would normally achieve with just charcoal. Using just one chunk would make the pack better value and I’m pretty confident it would produce the same results.
I got these to try out my new smoker now the weather is looking a tiny bit sunnier. I found these gave my meats a fantastic flavour and has really taken my ‘outdoors cooking’ to the next level.
For the amount you get, I find the price is quite fair but I really, really don’t like the bags these come in. The handles are made out of thin card and if you attempt to even use the handle, it will just tear through die to the weight. Quite hard to keep sealed and dry after opening too.
Good product with great potential if more attention to detail is paid to its packaging.
I have tried both the pellets and wood from this brand. I chose the Hickory version and I am delighted with the results. It has really stepped up my ‘outdoor cooking’. Really looking forward to the sunnier months to keep on using this regularly. I will probably buy more when this bag runs out.

The only complaint I have for this product is the packaging. The handles are made out of thin card and if you attempt to even use the handle, it will just tear through die to the weight. Quite hard to keep sealed and dry after opening too.
Excellent product, will buy again but better packaging would be amazing!
Hickory delivers a strong smoke flavour but if that is what you like, these are the business. I prefer chunks to chips as they last a lot longer and don’t need topping up as frequently, especially if soaked in water for an hour or two. Some of the chunks are fairly large so if you have a small smoker you may struggle to fit them in, but that hasn’t been much of a problem for me. I would recommend using these in a 50/50 blend with a nice fruit wood (I’ve been using plum but apple or cherry are just fine), as the sweetness fromt hose woods can conuterbalance the rougher nuttines of hickory. Outstanding purchase for any home smoker.
These add a wonderful flavour to your food, I have used them a few times in my Ooni pizza oven and they are a great addition.
Worth noting: only use a small amount and mix with Tragopan pellets to avoid overpowering the taste. They burn very well and definitely add that little extra.
Packaging deserves a mention as environmentally friendly. Quite pricey, but as mentioned they should be mixed with normal pellets for the best result, so good value for money.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.
I love outdoor cooking and regularly try different products to enhance flavour. These hickory chunks are as good as anything I’ve yet encountered.
The chunks are a decent size so burn for longer, but the most important aspect is the flavour, and this is excellent — subtle but present throughout.
The chunks should be used in moderation — so as not to overpower the taste — and wrapped in tin foil with holes. If applied directly to the coals, the effect is lost.
A pack is fairly pricey, however, and the bag isn’t filled fully. It’s still an excellent addition to the BBQ, though, and the product gets bonus points for the environmentally friendly packaging.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.
Soak the pellets first. Works better I think.
Sprinkle on the coals and let the lovely tasty smoke envelop your grill.
Adds a lovely smoky flavour to grilled foods
Don’t use inside, you’ll never rid the kitchen of the smell.
Although it is not really the weather for it we decided to fire up the pizza oven last weekend (when it was actually quite pleasant in Eastern England). A chance to try out these hickory wood chunks and see if they added to the taste of the pizzas. Pleased to say that they worked well and we got a lovely extra hint of flavour.
I think I would have to say that at 16.99 (at the time of this review) these are on the expensive side.
Which made it all the more disappointing that the bag was of poor quality and when I picked it up by the handle the handle promptly tore off. As the same happened with a bag of wood pellets from the same brand I think there is a flaw in the bags.
This bag of Applewood Pellets for BBQ Grill, Wood Fired Pizza Oven, Kamado and Outdoor Smokers is 1.5kg in weight and comes in paper bag.
I tried cold smoking some cheese and it came out rather nice. I put some pellets in foil, made several holes, torched to get the smoke going and when the flame calmed down I put some cheese on the grill. I left it for about 2 hours, then wrapped it with greaseproof paper and left it in the fridge for 10 days. The flavour was mild (probably because I didn’t put a lot of pellets) and I quite liked it.
As it is not really the season for having a BBQ I tried these in my oven top smoker. We smoked some fish for supper one evening and these produced a lovely cherrywood aroma which imparted itself nicely to the fish.
I think I would have to say that at 14.99 (at the time of this review) these are on the expensive side.

I have used similar products before but have to say this is by far the best.
I used it with ham and i detected a lovely background flavour and i will definitely be ordering more in this range once summer hits.
I have waited ages to test this item out, if i had known how tastey it would make a regular bbq i would have been using it for years lol. Tahe fam will love it too, roll on summer!
The pellets were delivered on time and well packaged. The product is of good quality in a weight of 1.5 kg. The pellets are made of cherrywood and burn very well. Before using them in my smoker, I’m leaving them in the water for 10-15min, this is for making a small amount of smoke, also they will burn slowly, the smoke will be more qualitative an the meat taste it will be with less smoke odour, also the cherrywood will give to the meat an attractive red colour . The product is intended for outdoor grill handling. I am satisfied with the purchase and the service received
This is a small pack of woodchips, to be added at the very last minute essentially.
I think they benefit from a bit of pre-soaking because they will produce more smoke over a longer time.
It works better if the BBQ has a lid one can close to keep the smoke in. As an alternative one can cover the meat with aluminium trays.
I tried with lamb chops and it is a good way to get some variety.
This said, it is pretty expensive for what it is. After all they are just woodchips and not necessarily from exotic woods. Good for occasional use out of curiosity.
Me and my hubby are obssest with bbq food. So its interesting to find out how the food tastes in different burning methods (our favorite now is oak wood) these ones were really easy to start burning, plenty of time to cook raw meat, and the taste was delicous!
Yay… finally did the first barbecue with this cherrywood chip. I guess this can be the first one before summer starts. It has a woody scent when we open it. we chose cherrywood one because it suits for any meat or vegetables. We tried it on a lamb and some beef skewers.. You can taste and smell some woody and fruity smell. You don’t need much. Just a small handful.. It is a great experience to smoke something by yourself. My hubby promised to smoke some salmon for me.. so I am really looking forward to the second smoky barbecue. Hope you find this helpful.
These are a welcome addition to our BBQ because they are easy to handle and are a nice uniform size, unlike wood chunks we have used in the past. They only concern is keeping them away from moisture in an airtight container. We have a woodshed outside but will have to keep these indoors. The applewood variety gives a more subtle flavour and is correctly recommended for lighter meats like pork and chicken, and fish. It also recommends fruit which is something I’ve never thought of so will be giving that a try this summer. This is a nice product to enhance your BBQ food.
Smells lovely! Great for my smoker smoked meat is lush
Smells great! Added to my smoker and creates tasty smoked meat! Smoked
I have this bag of fresh grills wood pellets for BBQ, grill, pizza oven etc., made from applewood.
Pellets arrived in 1.5kg paper bag, the handle was broken on arrival.
They are very uniformed, look and feel of a decent quality.
I’ve used them in the smoke tube on my BBQ. I’ve added only a little bit, just to improve the taste of my burgers.
The taste was very unique, I could feel that it added a bit of sweetness to my burgers, but it wasn’t overpowering the spices.
Very pleasant smell and taste.
These pellets seems to be pricey, but I’ve used only a little bit on my large BBQ and it made the difference.
Versatile pellets, I like to experiment with food to improve taste, so I would happily recommend these applewood pellets.
These cherywood chunks arrived in the 1.5kg paper bag.
Unfortunately the handle was broken on arrival.
The chunks look of a good quality, dry and quite uniformed in shape/size.
They are very versatile and can be used for many different purposes, but I’ve used them on my BBQ.
I put them in my smoke tube, but could be also put in the aluminium foil with holes.
I’ve used only a little bit for the fine aroma.
I tried it with burgers.
They have a nice smoky taste a bit sweet and fruity but not overpowering spieces and a bit milder than what I’ve achieved using applewood.
Overall I’m happy with the result and unique, aromatic taste of burgers.
These chunks seems pricey, but only a little bit was needed for my large BBQ, I will use it from time to time, would also like to try different wood chunks.
Great smoking wood, but a bit pricey.
Used these for a project and they did the job!
I review a lot of products on Amazon and this is one of those that I really enjoyed! 🙂

Absolutely great smoking wood. I had great results using it.
I normally use another brand with a similar quality similar sized cuts and a similar quantity but for 12.50
These are quite a bit more expensive at 16.99 this is delivered but is still a lot of money.
It’s shame as I would love to use this brand.
Even though I guess they are a European company the current company I use is American so doing my bit to try and trying to lower my carbon footprint is always on my mind.
To summarise if you don’t mind paying the money this is a great product and I would love to keep using it!
I’ve used these applewood pellets inside one of of the steel smoke boxes, this is the one I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B095SXR4Z9/ and they’ve worked really well. The flavour is subtle and natural, not quite a smack in the tastebuds and that’s exactly what I was hoping for. The pellets have a large surface area to volume ratio so they get going quite quickly. The bag rolls up easily and takes up less room the more I use so there are no problems with storage.
I received the hickory smoke wood chips. It’s not currently Bbq season but they smell very nice and looking forward to using them. They come in a paper bag and need to be stored somewhere dry. I’ll update once bbq season starts.
I really like the results I got with these wood chips. It produced excellent and authentic tasting apple wood smoked meats. I’ve so far used this on brisket and a ham.
I’m big into barbecue and even use it during the winter to have indoor barbecue meals. I cook outside and then we all enjoy in the warm.
Using these wood chips really enhance the flavours and give meat such a satisfying and authentic smokiness that can’t be replicated. In this case in makes the ham and brisket have an additional sweetness.
I used to get my woodchips from a well known BBQing brand but I really like this Fresh Grills company and will certainly get more as I’m that impressed with these
I love how these arrived plastic free and the wood is sustainable.
My son has barbecues all year round and we often buy wood chips that will enhance the flavour of the food, more than just charcoal.
Hickory chips is one of our favourites for authentic flavour and a lovely smell when smoking.
These are varied in size which means some will smoke for longer and keep the flavour going throughout the cooking
Sold in a paper bag these are environment friendly and a good price
We found it perfect for both chicken and pork ( to our taste) and really sweetens vegetables. It is also nice on most meat cuts, adding a sweet, tangy flavour
Looking forward to it again this weekend!

We have used Fresh Grills Hickory Chips on our firepit before, but these Hickory Chunks are quite a bit bigger and don’t seem quite so suitable for that purpose. The wood itself seems very similar to the chips and is probably from the same European source — said to be sustainable — but we will have wait until it’s a bit warmer before we get the barbecue out for the season. For around seventeen pounds currently from Amazon you get something like 1 Kg of Hickory Chunks which should add some smokey flavour to your meat — said to be good for beef, pork and game. We found the Hickory Chips worked well with burgers cooked over our firepit grill so we expect the same smokiness from these chunks when we use them — four stars for value at the price.
These wooden smoking chunks are actually really rather good. I have used multiple smokers over the years in my BBQs and I always strive to find new woods and flavours to try. I usually go with a reputable brand that I have imported specifically from the USA but when I was presented with the opportunity to try these I thought why not?
The manufacturers supply their woods in 4 different varieties; Oak, Cherrywood, Hickory and Applewood. I chose Applewood and I am glad I did. The suppliers claim their woods are all sustainable which is good to know (although harder for me to prove) and they come supplied in 100% recyclable paper packaging. It’s worth pointing out from the start that these woods are supplied as fairly big chunks as opposed to chips which a lot of firms will sell you. I actually prefer to work with chunks as they smoke for a lot longer and don’t tend to catch and burn as easily as smaller wood chips can. I tested a batch out in my back garden and smoked some pork chops and a salmon side and the resulting infusion of taste from the applewood was ever so sweet and succulent. Be mindful that you really don’t need to use a lot of these to impart a taste. Use too many and you will overpower the meats.
At first appearance, to the uninitiated, it may seem that you don’t get too many ‘chunks’ for your money, but the reality is that this bag will easily see you through half a dozen or so separate BBQ cooking sessions. Pound for pound, that’s a good amount of additional ‘flavour’ you are getting for your money.
Overall I can’t fault these in anyway and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product to anyone. A high quality product presented at a more than reasonable price. I can’t wait to try some other offerings from this company. Bring on the summer!
I have used cherry wood pellets for some time when cooking fish on the barbecue for my partner, who likes the slightly sweet, smoked flavour that is added. Although the weather has not been great recently, we did fire up the barbecue to cook some salmon on one of the milder days, albeit the resultant meal was eaten inside. I love the smell of these pellets, which is stronger than the ones I have used before and they do impart more flavour, albeit still mild in the grand scheme of things. I always feel it is nice to experiment with food and I am likely to try the apple pellets next.
These are good quality pellets that add a delicate smokiness to your food.
If you are looking for a replacement for the standar coal, want a smoky feel on your meat, than this is for you.
It comes in packaged in a bag, it’s well robust so i have no doubt it will keep it stored well, as long as it’s kept dry at all times, Let me say that it is not like coal, it won’t burn for as long and it’s not as easy to get going, however you don’t need to use as much and it doesn’t smoke much either.
I very much prefer a good coal bbq to a gas one, this is the reason why, you can use different types of wood and get a much different finish and flavour adding to your food, which i love.
I personally got the Oak wood, these chunks are of a decent size, slightly larger than your standard coal.
It’s much nicer than coal and will enhance the flavour of your food.
I know its not BBQ season at the moment (February) but we BBQ whenever possible even in winter under a gazebo. I only use an ordinary small kettle BBQ but find the results of smoking really great, adding wood chunks is a great way to enhance flavour and these oak chunks are great quality. Dry, some with bark and a good size, high quality wood. Perfect.
I bought a bag of smoking wood last year to try out smoking meat but I did not have much luck so seeing these I thought give it another go, as there was a choice of different wood I checked on line to see what would be the best for what I needed and it said Oak so that’s what I asked for.
I was quite surprised when it arrived at the size of the chunks, the bag I bought last year contained small chips which I could put in my smoke tin but these are not going to fit at least not with the lid closed unless I cut them into smaller pieces, it says that if you use a charcoal barbeque to lay these in the hot embers where they will slowly burn or if you have a gas barbeque to use like I do a smoke tin, as I have a gas barbeque with lava rock I might experiment and just lay a couple of chunks either end in the lava rock and see what happens.
Not that many chunks of wood in the bag so hopefully just using a few each time will be enough otherwise it will work out a little expensive what ever it’s going to be a few months yet before I can try these out, lets hope we have the weather.
Firstly, these are pellets, so you must be aware of that as you will need to set them up differently from normal chunks, especially if you are used to use coal, this works a bit differently, but once you use it properly, the results are so worth it.
It comes in a bag that is safe enough to store it, i would recommend keeping it in a dry area as much as possible, it was super easy to use, as i’ve just filled in my bbq and with a few fire starters, it was no problem to get these going.
Compare to coal, these don’t burn for as long or get as hot, so do keep that in mind, as you will have to use more than you think, depending on how much cooking you’re going to do, it works out well for me as i only use it for two, so i don’t have to use much or long.
Is it better than charcoal? Yes, i believe so, what it lacks on everything else it makes up in the flavour that it adds to food, i very much prefer a nice charcoal bbq to gas personally, so if you add this fine wood to it, it makes it a much more pleasant experience, as it adds the smokiness of outdoor camping and enhances the flavour on food, it’s like natures msg.
Highly recommend if you want to take your barbecuing to the next level.
This sack of wood chunks is ideal for bbqs and pizza ovens. The bag is 100% recycled paper and there is no plastic in the packaging at all, which is great. Furthermore, Smokehouse Essentials source their wood chunks from sustainable European orchards and offer a low carbon footprint, so appear to be an eco friendly company with an eco friendly product.
I chose oak wood chunks and was pretty impressed with the ones I received. A mixture of outer barked wood and inner wood chunks, these are in an assortment of sizes and are far bigger than I had anticipated. I am planning on using these within my nursery class, where they will enrich our small role play and small world area. I will sand the rough edges down, but do feel that it is really valuable for children to handle and look at real life objects, to encourage their understanding about the world and develop their risk taking and safety awareness. These wood chunks will make excellent props for the animals and dinosaur play, and can be used as fire wood for the hearth in their Home Area. These chunks are the perfect size for wee hands to hold and handle, and are very lightweight. I would happily order these again as they are a great quality product, and are very reasonably priced at just under 10.
It hasn’t been quite the weather yet for getting the barbecue out for the season but my wife enjoys using her firepit so tried some of these Fresh Grills Smokehouse Essentials Cherrywood Pellets to smoke some chicken this sunny afternoon. Once the firepit had burned down a bit my wife added some of these wood pellets to the embers, got the grill on and added the chicken pieces – not a bad result. There are a choice of four different types of wood available from Amazon, with each having slightly different properties making them suitable for cooking a wide range of meats and vegetables. Previously around eight pounds (but currently unavailable) from Amazon you get a recyclable paper bag full with about 700g of eco-friendly wood pellets, sustainably sourced from Europe. An interesting way to make your barbecue grills more tasty and not bad value for the quality — five stars and all positive so far.
Nice strong paper bag of pellets that burn easily.
I’ve found that you can add these pellets to the charcoal once they are just glowing – that way they start up quickly and are ready at the point of cooking. Add them too early and their smoke it mixed in with the coals and is dramatically reduced when you need it.
Gives a nice smoky flavour meat (and a nice smell to your clothes). Slightly sweet smelling rather than the taste, but certainly adds something. Would be really good in a purpose-built smoker, although they do burn readily.
Even in the winter sometimes, I light up the barbeque under the gazebo and get grilling. You receive a small bag of these woodchips for a good price. These wood chips were fantastic and you only need one or two handfuls and they do the job well. They are a good size, and the food is good quality, they are sustainably sourced and eco-friendly as well which is great.
They do the job well and I highly recommend them.
This is a special pack of cherrywood chunks for giving a nice red colour and BBQ smoke flavour to the meat, they seems to be well dry before packaging, but anyway you need to leave them in the water for 15min before use in the smoker, this it will do the smoke much qualitative and also will keep them to do the smoke longer. Delivery was fast and well packed, I’m very happy with this product and I would recommend i
These wood chips give a luxury feel to having a BBQ and the four different wood options to choose from will depend on the flavour and the meat you are smoking. I opted for the Applewood chips because we tend to cook a lot of chicken, and this was the most suitable pairing for chicken although cherry is as well — I thought we would try Applewood to begin with and come back for Cherry
The flavours in the Chicken are transformed to rich and mildly sweet and fruity without being overpowering and just that much more flavoursome.
They burn evenly, smell so nice and are suitably packaged in a sturdy recyclable bag.
Will definitely be coming back for more to try different flavours.
This is a special pack of oak chips which it will give a nice colour and smoke flavour to the BBQ meat, this pack is ideal for hot and cold smoker. The wood chips seems to be well dry before packaging, and on the package it says that it doesn’t need to soak them in the water but, for using them in the hot smoker anyway you need to leave them in the water for 15min before use them, that’s my advice, this it will do the smoke much qualitative and also will keep them to do the smoke longer. Delivery was fast and well packed, I’m very happy with this product and I would recommend i
sadly since i got them it has not been BBQ weather so not had a chance to try them out, but judging by the quality packaging i feel assured that the contents will be everything they say they are and add a new dimension to BBQs, roll on summe
Small easy-to-light chunks of wood, best applied once you’ve almost got your coals glowing.
These burn easily and let off a lovely rich smell. The smoke certainly gets into your food (and clothes). You don’t need many for a good effect, so the bag should last a few BBQ’s.
These Fresh Grills Smokehouse Essentials Hickory chips are just what you need if you like Hickory smoked meats. Hickory is not easy to get hold of in the UK and it’s also nice to see that these come from a sustainable source. Chuck a few on the BBQ to make your BBQ stand out from the others, or wrap some in foil and pierce several times to get even more smoke. A rare treat to be able to have Hickory smoked BBQ in this country.
I thought these would good to take on our family holiday on the coast. We caught mackerel on most days and next year we want to try smoking some. As an experiment I lit a barbeque smoker and when the charcoal was glowing red I added some a few applewood chunks. The few chunks certainly gave off an aromatic smell that I think would give barbequed food a nice taste. I cant wait to try them out when the weather is warm enough to sit outside. Coming from a sustainable source is one of the reasons we wanted to try this product.
The attached picture shows the total contents of the bag of Fresh Grills Smokehouse Essentials Fire Lighter Flavoured Bbq Smoking Wood Chunks which I received. If you use the whole lot at once in your pizza oven or BBQ smoker it could work out quite expensive so better to use the Smokehouse Essentials Wood Chunks mixed with your regular wood in order to improve smoked flavour. The wood chunks themselves are well seasoned and burn okay, but these Smokehouse Essentials are hard wood so they could do with a little regular fire wood to help them burn anyway.
I’ve started using these in my pizza oven. As per the instructions I wrap them in foil pole a few holes in it and then place them in the oven. I’ve put the pack on top at the rear so it’s not directly in the flames, well at least to begin with. When it gets good and hot you get a lovely plume of smoke from them to add a bit of flavour to the fire. I don’t notice it so much with the pizzas as they are in and out so much but you do get a hint of the taste, cooked a couple of big juicy steaks in there recently though on a lower heat with plenty of smoke. The taste was very noticeable this way Once the pellets start burning they burn quick so also good if you want to add quick heat to the bbq but they don’t last long. Far better using them for smoking.
I purchased these to go with a brand new Kamado Bono that I purchased. I plan to smoke several different things, fish, pork, other seafood.
I am looking forward to trying the other flavors, but if they are all as good, I will have no complaints.
It’s not the right time of year for a BBQ so I experimented with burning wood in my garden chiminea and adding the applewood pellets — wonderful aroma! I can’t wait to add the smoky taste to some full flavour BBQ cooking. A five-star experience is anticipated from this smoke source.
This is a pack of Hickory wood chunks (about 1.5Kg) for authentic smokehouse style BBQs. They come packaged in 100% recyclable packaging (paper with cotton string). Very useful as an alternative to lumpwood charcoal and ideally suited to covered BBQs. I chose Hickory but there are three other woods available. Good value but obviously more expensive than cheap charcoal briquettes.
This pack of Applewood wood chips contains about 700g of wood chips in a paper bag which is 100% recyclable. The wood chips have been well dried and are ideal for BBQs, especially if you have a covered BBQ. I chose Applewood but there are three other woods available. The cost of these wood chips is very reasonable for a single dried wood-type.
I am so looking forward to using these pellets with my BBQ.
Currently the weather prevents me. ( I am a summer only BBQ guy!!! )
But, I am sure these pellets will bring a new flavour to my grills.
Could not wait till the warmer weather so tried these this weekend – a January barbie! The taste these impart to the food is actually incredible and I am now asking myself why on earth I did not use these before. I certainly will be from now on.
Not a bad price point 8 for 700 g of wood chips for s smoker.
The chips are a nice size and very well packed.
Simple instructions on the package but if you have a smoker you know what to do.
Over all very pleased

These BBQ Hardwood Pellets will be what sets your BBQ apart from the others this summer. I add these to my BBQ wrapped in tin foil with lots of holes in the foil. This prevents the wood chips from catching fire and makes them smoke instead. BBQs are elevated to a new level with that smokey flavour. Of course these wood chips can also be used in a smoking machine but I haven’t managed to lay my hands on one of those yet. Great stuff for making your BBQ stand out.
These small sustainable wood chips come in a paper bag, so tick the environmentally friendly box (as far as burning wood can go, at least).
I’ve added them to a BBQ once the coals had stopped burning and were glowing. This is much better (and cost-effective) than adding them in when you’re getting the BBQ going initially. They smoulder and release a lovely smell which does stick to the food your cooking (as well as your clothes).
I used to live in the States where having your ribs “Genuine Hickory Smoked” is an absolute must. These chips certainly did it for me this weekend with my humble barbecue grill and my beef skewers. What a flavour! I’m also pleased to see that the chips come from a sustainable source. These tick all the boxes for me.
