So it’s good for figuring out water temp, depth and what level the fish are at. It’s by no means top shelf. I honestly am thinking about getting the deeper pro plus 2 because it looks like a better more detailed system. How we it’s far more expensive. Does it work well? Yes. Could it be far better? Also yes.
In a typical Garmin fashion, it’s a brilliant device with some very stupid (and obviously artificial) limitations. And after using it for a while, I have sooo many questions
— Why is it blue?! What planet is it intended to be used on? On Earth we have blue skies reflecting from the water, which makes it really hard to see
— Why is there no other mounting options? Not even dimples for a click-on/friction mount
— Why is there no night light option in a top of the line castable device?
— Why do I have to log in to my Garmin account to create isobaric maps, but cannot privately share it across devices under the same account?
— Why can’t I export these maps in any open format?
— Why is there no easy way to mark structure on the map as you scan?
— Why the unit that is capable of recording very precise location and scanning with a very narrow beam only records low resolution map?
Well, with all of this in mind, it is still an excellent castable sonar. I’m keeping mine.
Bought it to map a small pond on someone’s property. It was able to return a decent chart to quickdraw after only a few casts. Planned to use and return but it’s so small and not THAT expensive, now I think I’ll keep it in the tackle box to check out new spots. Bluetooth range is really about 150-200 ft, couldn’t cast much further with the light tackle I was using anyway.
Tip 1: Add another 18″ leader and a bobber: it you break your line, at least you’ll have a shot at snagging it with a treble hook.
Tip 2: To cover a big area or specific spots, try towing it with an RC boat.
If anyone from Garmin is reading this: give it more than 1 point of attachment!! That one little plastic bar should have at least one backup.
I was very skeptical but now am a believer. Small powerful technology that has really helped me under stand the lake I fish on more clearly. Easily stored in my tackle box. i generally drag it behind my small boat using my trolling motor. Great images unless i am going too fast or the water is very choppy. Blue tooth connection has been dependable (sometime briefly disconnects but rapidly reconnects). With each outing I am adding data about my lake and uploading it to the Garmin site. Battery life is good and am able to get through a full day without losing power (not 2 days though). Very worthwhile addition to my tackle.
The iPhone screen is exactly like what you see on an expensive Garmin boat depth finder. I bought a cheap but stout rod & reel specifically for this so I have confidence it won’t fly off. So far I have only used the fish finder, not the GPS; if buying again I’d get the non-GPS version to save $50. Regardless, it’s a really fun gadget to have even if the fish aren’t biting.
