Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation, Black – Smart Thermostat – A Brighter Way To Save Energy
The brighter way to save energy.
The 3rd-generation Nest Thermostat learns the temperatures that you like, turns itself down when you’re away and connects to your phone. It has a big, sharp display. It controls your hot water tank. And it helps save energy. That’s the most beautiful part.
Saving energy starts with your thermostat.
Your thermostat controls 60% of your energy bill. So shouldn’t it help you save energy? The Nest Thermostat does. Since 2011, it’s saved over 4 billion kWh of energy in millions of homes worldwide. Because it learns from you. It gets to know the temperature that you like while you’re at home.
-
Remote control.
Change the temperature and control your hot water tank from anywhere using your mobile, tablet or laptop.
-
Home/Away Assist.
It automatically adjusts the temperature after you’ve left. It can even turn off your hot water if you’re away for a few days.[1]
-
Farsight.
When the Nest Thermostat spots you across the room, it lights up beautifully to show you the time, temperature or weather.

A great product for convenience and design. It was very easy to swap out the old and somewhat buggy 1st generation Nest. Quick 15 minutes to switch out the old heat link and thermostat. The heat link box was a little bigger than the 1st generation one but that only meant a need screw plug but the thermostat fixed securely into the old screw plugs without any hassle. Always worth taking a photo of the old wiring if you’re confident, competent and upgrading.
purchased to make expensive boiler replacement a little more exciting. really easy to set up and using it day to day could not be easier. have it wall mounted and looks really smart. love the smart learning features and a quick switch to eco mode for the past summer was easy. you get a monthly email with a report on how much the heating was on and how many eco green leaves you earn’t which i like. Only negative is does not come with a power cable but don’t let that put you off as they are really easy to come by. would definitely recommend.
Love my gadgets. Because I have a combi boiler I decided to get an electrician to fix this device which cost 90 but well worth getting a professional doing it rather than resorting to utube. A few hours later it was all set up and absolutely love it located in the Entryway. I also have the Nest app installed onto my Samsung Note 8 and it’s a breeze to control. Walking past the nest thermostat in the hallway will automatically come on and you can set it to the weather, digital or analogue clock (amongst other options) which is pretty cool.
Looks and feels quality! Also does the hot water. Great product so far, when we’re working from home, but we’ll see if it ‘learns’ a suitable schedule in winter when the heating is more critical. Love the fact that I can now remote control it if I forgot before going out. Nest connectivity has occasionally been a problem when remote, but has been more reliable recently.
I got my nest heating controls today first impressions looks ok but a few things bothered me first of all I was lucky that my old salus IT500 setup had the exact same wiring so it was pretty easy to do the wiring or so you would think!
Installation asks you to mount the heatlink to the wall after installing the wiring I strongly suggest you do it this way otherwise its a right c*** to do it on the wall. The clamps for holding the cable in place were not to my liking they certainly were not designed for round cable in mind! That being said I carefully flattened a section of the outer casing on the cable so it would fit better. Then I had to tighten the screws very carefully because I think if id been a bit over zealous I would have snapped it. This plastic isnt designed for this task! See photo’s
The outer cover on the heatlink is a bit poorly designed the clip piece on the top that holds it in position to keep it on after the screw in the bottom is done up is useless and this is the main reason this product lost a star for me. You can see in the photo’s how I can easily pull the top part away from the heatlink.
Now the thermostat unit is very solid its so heavy I think there is a metal block inside it lol. Setup was fairly easy however there were no instructions on how to use the learning thermostat I had to look online to learn how t o use it. I thought it was a touch screen but its not.
I initially used a phone charger to power the learning thermostat although there must be a battery inside as it works without it plugged in. so maybe that explains the weight of it. After this I dug into my plug drawer and found a suitable 12v transformer plug those ones you typically get what I call black plug transformers. So I wired this upto the learning thermostat’s base doesnt matter which way the wires go. Im glad the base has a spirit level in it that is a nice touch it makes mounting it to a wall easy although I just screwed mine into the bottom of my staircase (wood) about 1.5m off the ground.
The app is a bit fiddly especially trying to make a schedule that was a royal pain in the a** but if you want to set the same for every day of the week you can copy monday and paste it to the rest of the days of the week.
I havent had time to look into the app in depth but it seems comprehensive. Lets hope it lasts longer than my salus did. That lasted about 5 years although I cant complain too much 5 years is pretty good. But the salus was 1st generation so it wasnt as good as this I needed an extra device powered and plugged into the router. Having said that, now I power the thermostat so I guess swings and roundabouts.
This is an early review I may change in the future but hopefully I dont need to.
It worked perfectly then it stopped picking up the wifi so nest support sent me a replacement..so far so good
I bought this because the old manual timer on my boiler had broken.
It does a good job of switching the heating on and off, however it has an annoying habit of ‘learning’ and pre-empting when it thinks the heating should come on.
I’ve woken up many times at 5am to find the heating cranking out at full power while it decides it will preheat the house for me before I wake up!
You can fiddle with the schedule to trick it into not doing this, but it’s a real faff.
Overall it is a great system, but you have to be prepared to mess around with it to get the results that you want.
This looks absolutely fantastic and the build quality is really very good, it feels very strong when turning the dial, not cheap plastic (wouldn’t expect so for the price). The far-sight sensor is accurate and you don’t have to jump in front of it for it to detect you. I’m not 100% sure that the temperature being detected is absolutely accurate and have only set timer rather than using the self learning function… need to play with it a bit more but it seems to be pretty good.
Really great device but the home/away function doesn’t work in colder climates where it takes an hour to heat the house up. What you find is that the heating comes on as you walk in the door and you then have to wait in the cold. We reverted to using a schedule and Google home integration to turn it on/off instead.
Very impressed with Google Nest!
Super easy to use and very smart thermostat!
Within a first week of using it, Nest learned the daily schedule and automatically adjust the temperature now, no need to manually setup (but you can still do this).
Very elegant design and great mobile app!
UPDATE AFTER USING FOR 12MONTHS:
Still very impressed, we had no issues so far.
We can only use it for heating as our boiler has a water tank, it cannot be used for water.
Great quality, would definitely recommend!
Hope you find this helpful 🙂

Very easy to use in order to set a schedule for the heating. It is also very nice to extend the hot water from the app (rather than climbing to floors to hit the advance button), as we have teenagers in the house so showers at odd hours. Pricey and we have one unit for the g/f heating zone – don’t think I will spring another 200 + installation for the bedroom zone, but worth it for the ground floor with the added flexibility and convenience that brings.
Absolutely love this device, since installing it not only do no longer have that annoying clicking that my old thermostat had when turning on and off but I also have a warmer home as it seems much more accurate at reading the actual room themps. I also have a much more energy efficient home proven by my last few months worth of energy bills. I love the functionality, the ability to control remotely and its intelligence to learn our habits and adjust accordingly and also know when we are home or away.
I fitted it myself and found it much easier than I expected and I may add I’ve never install and kind of thermostat before.
Thought I would buy this to control a heating oil central heating boiler which previously only had a rotary time control. So far I am very pleased since we now have a regulated way of maintaining a controlled temperature in our main living area. The one drawback was after 5 days of use the thermostat had lost its connection to the heat link. H71 error code. Technical support for this is not sufficiently clear. To re-establish connection I found that you have to reset the thermostat by pressing the front until the thermostat goes blank and reboots, then go to the heat link press the main button on this until the yellow panel light flashes very quickly yellow then release, it should then reboot to the blue setup light. This was much longer a press than the 20 seconds given in the tech support. (The guidelines given online create some confusion here as the yellow light will blink after a 20 second press however just resets to yellow). Both devices reconnected automatically after these steps. Other than the technical support not being clear on an H71 error I would give 5 stars in all categories.
A good product which was fairly straightforward to install. Despite it taking a many attempts to connect to the internet it has been easy to operate. Coming home to a toasty house.
The installation was easy. For a novice such as myself going to a combi boiler, I just followed instructions in the box and watched a YouTube video to confirm. That seemed to do the trick. After that everything was straight forward.
Schedule was automatically set on the first week. Adding family members for auto shut down when not in really helps.
Integration with alexa is good but not great to be fair. It is absolutely usable though.
Iftt integration has now been lost, Google really messed up there, but what can you do. Wanted to fully integrate into a smart home with alexa, blink etc… But the services don’t seem to be talking to each other. I removed one star for that.
I bought this thinking we could easily set it up. THINK AGAIN. Not only did we have to pay for a stand that cost another 50, but we also had to pay an electrician 80 to set it up. He had to change wiring in our boiler, which was certainly not something we could have done ourselves.
It’s good now it’s in. But a lot of unexpected expense to get it to work.
Love this have wanted one for ages and bought this for 156 as box damaged it’s an absolute bargain I had my boiler services and the gas engineer fitted it for me. It was easy enoygh to set up eve though the set up was in Swedish but I have since swopped it to English. I didn’t realise how rubbish my old thermostat was as this is set to 20 and it’s cosy the old one was on 30 and still cold. Once it’s set up and aiexa is attached it’s all done by voice control I’d recommend to anyone
Had this fitted by a professional recommended by Nest after purchasing from Amazon on Prime Day!
It cost 85 to fit and took around an hour with the engineer taking a further 20 mins to explain full functionality.
Very pleased with it so far as it is so much easier to use and particularly when away from home it goes it to energy save mode switching back on when you return.
It works on location from my phone and of course I can override at any time from the really clear and functional app .
No negatives to date and I have been using it for just two months.
Full control of your house temperature and great automatic features inside like home/away. Reports of previous heating usage gives you an idea if you saving or actually wasting energy. Great app interface. Obvously, works great with google home. Very easy schedule planning and also having learning feature on, it starts helping you to adjust the temperature to save money or just make your life more comfortable.
I am one of those awkard people who prefers to read how to work a product. The installation went well and setting up the unit was fairly easy (after the six week residential course). But I still like to know that how I have set it up is correct. For example I would like the heating to come on at 6:00 am and run at 23 for 2.5 hours. The drop down to 17 and on again at 16:00 hrs until 22:00 hours when it drops to the previous temperature. I woke up during the night say 3:00 and the boiler was running I was hot and I thought Nest is in conrol here doing what it feels like rather than following my instructions. Perhaps I have not set it up properly but there was no instruction manual in the box.
No doubt in time I will find out how to use it and hopefully I will save on my gas bill. I am certainly not holding my breath. Any ideas where I can read something to know how to set it up properly?
Wife hasn’t complained once about being cold since we got this, hence worth five stars! so simple and after a while it learnt when we wake up and has the house warm already. Expensive and costly to get installed by a professional, which having seen done I would not recommend you do yourself unless you are competent with central heating systems and wiring.
Used to control the Bosch Worcester boiler in my last house. When I installed a new boiler in the new house, I initially used the 200 Bosch Comfort controller – in comparison with this… well, let’s just say there is no comparison. The nest is far more powerful, far simpler to use, more aesthetically pleasing, controllable from my phone, just better all round. Also much more logical than the Hive version I looked at.
Does its job well but very unfortunate that Google have removed all its IFTTT support for it meaning far less powerful smart home integration. Sadly this means that whilst Alexa can control it, it’s nothing like as powerful as it would have been if I’d had a pre-google Nest account. It’s clear Google are just keen for us to buy Google Assistant rather than Alexa. Which is disappointing.
Well this is my 3rd smart stat, started with a netatmo, that lasted 3 years, then tado that broke in ten months.
Decided it was time to go for a best. The build quality is totally different to the others. Much more premium.
Was wired up by a spark as I have a more comprehensive mokexed heating system.
I did the set up on app and system. One thing to note is that after installation your hot water will probably be on for 2 hours no matter what your settings are, this is due to the legionnaires setting on the nest.
Has worked great since installation.
I never thought I’d call a techy gadget life changing, however, the nest totally is. Had a horrid thermostat before which takes ages to heat up and also takes two brains to work out how to set it up if you’re lucky. This seriously has changed my world, so easy to control and set up once the app is downloaded. LOVE, LOVE my nest!!! Have already recommended to two neighbours to get these changed to the nest!
These are great, but kiss out on 5* due to Google removing support for IFTTT. The Home/Away feature doesn’t work & IFTTT sorted this by creating a geofence – Google have since removed this, so don’t purchase if you are looking for automatic Home/Away features.
Easy to set up, looks good and feels good! and by golly it does you good. Much more modern and efficient temperature control than the old bi-metallic strip of the old thermostat, it thinks! and even pre-heats your room, for a nice suggly get up in the morning. Is it cost saving? hard to tell yet, but I think so, I will need to take into account initial purchase price and the vagaries of the weather. I’m happy; so it’s good for me!
So much better then my last thermostat, easy to use. Maybe too simple.
Moat annoying part is not wireless, fine. But cant there be a plug made for it so we can Just plug it and leave it in the wall. Other then that very happy
Have bought one of these four years ago, works well and am very pleased. Have recently bought another but no longer provided with a power plug and cable, so be aware that you may have to purchase separately
Works very well with old style combo boiler, this is the only smart Thermostat that works correctly with older non heat link boilers, using smart learning capability to work out the minimum amount of time required to run the boiler to achieve the target temperature without going over it, using the residual heat remaining in the radiators after the boiler turns off to reach the target temperature, significantly reducing the amount of gas used by the boile
I love this thermostat. It’s a quality product, works like a charm and makes heating my home so much easier. My old controller was fiddly to programme and the room thermostat was poorly placed and so I never touched it. I now have total control, and can easily adjust the Nest on a daily basis if needed in order to get the most out of my central heating and save money at the same time. The controller itself is so nice to use, it feels like a quality product and whoever designed it really thought about what they were doing. The ability to adjust the Nest thermostat from my phone is so useful, and I really couldn’t be happier. I haven’t tried pairing it with Alexa, because I don’t really need that option at present.
All in all a brilliant device.
Expensive for what it is but it’s great! I wouldn’t get it if I didn’t need remote control of my heating systems. Smart features to me are useless and I have switched them off (suspect most people will do same)
I’m always out of the house and most of daytime out at work so no matter how smart it is.. Won’t be able to keep up to my schedule.
Would I recommend? After nearly using it 2 years I have decided to post review.. The jury is out on this one..
If I could turn back time I might even have gone for Hive since it’s cheaper and would be enough for me. But overall it’s been working fine.. But expensive!
The NEST controller looks great and we have already seen a significant fall in our costs because it gives us remote control and also recognises when you have left the house so turns your heating down. A great feature. We replaced an old 240v Honeywell thermostat and timeclock on a conventional heating system with no extra kit required. I have seen a review about “where’s the charger” which is not needed if you use the DC feed from the Heatlink. The positioning of the Heatlink unit is the critical thing. For me the wiring came together in the airing cupboard so we sited the Heatlink there and then reused the thermostat wiring by connecting it to the DC feed. Of course if you want the thermostat to stand alone and not be wall mounted then yes you need a stand and charger but by working out your wiring you can normally reuse the wiring to connect your thermostat to the DC feed. The Heatlink is what switches the 240v to the boiler when the thermostat says so but there is that all important DC feed for the thermostat – once you get your head around that its easy to fit.
If you are fed up of having to go switch on your heating or water then get one of these. This is a great product and we are really pleased with the features and heating/hot water control. It was recommended to us by our boiler engineer. We had it professionally installed and we are so glad we did the engineer had to do some rewiring to get everything working. Best feature on this is link it to your mobile phones and if everyone’s out it knows so doesn’t put your heating on. It also learns your routines and modifies your programme to suit. ( but you can turn off this feature). We use ours wirelessly so had to get the stand and charger for it.
I’ve been using this for a while now and it’s brilliant. Makes a big difference to be able to turn the heating on/turn it up so the house is warm when i get home. The phone app is very easy to use. You can set your daily schedule as per the older systems but now i can quickly adjust settings with a few taps on my phone.
I needed an electrician friend to connect it up to my boiler system, didn’t take long but not a job i could’ve tackled myself. All in all very good.
Classy bit of kit, the dial and display look and feel really high quality.
The heating control is excellent, after just a few weeks it’s auto-scheduled such that I never have to touch it and it’s using the boiler a lot less than before.
Only let down is the hot water control which is simplistic and can only be manually scheduled to a granularity of 30 mins.
This is a nice looking piece of kit, but more importantly, it will save you money and should pay for its self it six months, I have been monitoring the usage and once the thermostat learns your habits there is very little you need to do to it to save on wastage.
It’s great if you’re out and you want to tweak the heating to be on at a certain temperature for you getting home so that you don’t waste very expensive gas, a great purchase I would definitely recommend
This did require a bit of faff to get it installed but I was lucky… my friend is an electrician and he told me what to do (sadly he lives 100 miles away so I had to do it myself, or pay a fee). It works really well and the lock feature means I can stop the kids turning it up and costing me money. I bought them each a dressing gown as that was cheaper. 😉
Alexa works well. The humidity doesn’t work with Alexa though. The reply to “what is the temperature inside” (you need to say inside) is just “20 degrees” or whatever the Temperature is… it’s a bit abrupt. But I don’t mind that really. It looks great and it’s already paying for itself. I’d say it’s a good investment which I think will save us money in the long run.
I rent out a lodge which is 160 miles from where I live. When guests leave, they often forget to lower the thermostat temperature and if I don’t have another guest for a few weeks, I waste a lot of gas…and it’s propane so very expensive!
Since I installed this I have been very pleased. Not only can I check the heat setting from 160 miles away, but I can see if anyone is in the lodge because if people leave, the Nest thermostat detects this and turns on eco mode, which sets the temperature to 7 degrees. I can also see how long the boiler has been on for. This will save me lots and be better for the environment. Plus it is easier for my guests to control. They can just turn the ring rather than have to fiddle with a digital programmer. I love it!
Defintely up there with some of the things I would say are a must. This thing has made life so much better. It literally is a set and forget or not even a set its just a forget item. Its installed and it just goes and does its thing in the background. I mean you don’t even hardly ever need to think about it. It just keeps your place nice and toasty for you as you like it all the time. Its one of those things that you buy and forget and it just makes your life so much more comfortable and better and you forget what it was like to ever live without one. I dread to even think what it would be like without it now, the best thing, a total must buy I would recommend to everyone.
Beware! Mine arrived with the UK thermostat but an American connection which I had to get replaced after an hour on the phone to Nest. It is not supplied with and connections and MUST be installed by a qualified electrician. So whilst I saved 40 because it was on offer I have spent that and more in time/phone/inconvenience and an electrician.
Once working it’s brilliant I foolishly thought it was plug in and go, so partly my fault.
As it says on the tin. Although you need to buy a stand for it to talk to the heat link and this wasn’t explained clearly when I bought the thermostat.
After a few weeks still trying to get use to the learning part of it.
Jugging between the Hive and the Neat. Read endless reviews on both and decided that most people were satisfied with the Nest. Purchased on Evening, arrived the next. Called an engineering who charged me 70 for the fitting. Fantastic piece of tech, would advice to anyone looking to upgrade their boiler and those interested in smart tech. One thing I could mention is Amazon are quoting 120 for installation, don’t both. Buy it and find your own Electrocian on the Nest Website. Contacted 3 and all quoted 70. Save yourself 50
Think this product is ace..Great for getting house warm by time I get home from work…Only downside that I could find that I would expected a power cable for thermostat itself as sitting on my coffee table instead of wired into wall..bit of extra expense but not stopping my enjoyment of produc
If you have a combi boiler then this is a simple installation but you will need the stand. If you have a standard system boiler with tank and motorised valves then you may need help from a sparky. Versatile so you can introduce it for room stat only or go the full hog and have it control water time control. Using Alexa and via phone is great. The Away feature is a must. When you leave the house the heating goes to setback eco temp.
As you can tell I like it….
Ive had this working with my heating system for the last 2 years. Never had an issue with it. Easy to setup (electrician installed it at a cheaper rate than buying the installation) Its worth it and features are great.
Issues – Nothing really until the wifi goes down BUT this is NOT the products fault.
We have it on eco most of the time and have setup a schedule on the Nest. When you install it make sure its in a non drafted place. Keep it central to your home as its a thermostat! People have installed this in areas which it will not work too great. We get reports on how much heating we have used to the email address we registered it with. I would highly recommend this.
I spent too long deliberating whether to go for Google/Nest or Amazon/Ring/Hive as my smart home ecosystem as choice. I got as far as receiving my Hive Thermostat before realising the error of my ways and buying this.
I am not DIY gifted – and I would not necessarily recommend doing it – but I managed to install my Nest with relative ease – obviously it was the boiler side of the install that is hardest, the software is very easy. Once installed it begins to learn – in all honesty we haven’t used that side much because I installed it during the hottest summer in decades. The app is solid and it thermostat feels great if you take the low tech approach. It also has a hassle-free integration with Google Assistant.
For most people which thermostat the main differentiators are going to be ecosystem and aesthetics. I’ve definitely brought into the Nest ecosystem. Its all very slick and the products feel as premium as their price. Though each offering is not necessarily best in class for what it does – lots of people will argue either way – taken as a whole it can only be rivalled by Amazon/Ring/Hive – and it does not rely on multiple vendors and apps.
Great device. Some people have complained that the functionality is flawed in that if you’re out for a few hours, it picks up you’re out and lowers the temp and it takes so long to up the temp when it knows you’ve returned. I get that, however, I just up the eco (lowest) temperature so the difference is less when its cold. I then change the eco temp when I’m away so the house isn’t being blasted. I still think its great, especially when you’ve been on holiday and come home to a warm house!
Very easy to set up and install, the dial is a tough system to use to enter passwords. A simple app input would be much easier. Pity it doesn’t use the wifi to set location and requires you to enter the post code. Perhaps voice or touch is a solution to the input problem?
We love our learning thermostat. Admittedly we chose Nest over Hive in part due to Hive’s irritating tv advert but we’re very happy with our choice nonetheless! We’ve paired this with our Amazon Echo so we can change the temperature in the flat by voice control alone. Handy when you can’t be bothered to get off the sofa! We have an unusual boiler setup and were lucky that we had a handyman round for another task who’d happened to have installed one before – he still had quite a bit of trouble getting it up and running. We’d originally planned to do this ourselves but we wouldn’t have stood a chance! Love that we can also turn the temperature up from our mobiles so the flat will be warm when we get home! The learning element seems to work well and it’s picked up our heating habits pretty quickly.
The nest thermostat was our first foray into smart home devices. Got for a great price on amazon prime deal.
Packaging, unboxing and first impressions good, feels and looks high end. Set up and installation was quick and easy with good paper guides in the box.
Fairly intuitive to set up and no need to program the thermostat just set Desired temp every day for 2 weeks and the algorithm learns your preferences. Hugely customisable in the app to create any schedule.
The ability to check if the heating is on and switch off after leaving the house or switching on in advance of coming home is excellent. The thermostat also learns how long the boiler takes to heat the house and factors this in – on our 5th day after installation we noticed that the house was already warm for us getting up.
Has worked flawlessly since installation, nest products have a high cost but this works very well.
Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend
Unfortunaetlty, I was lucky enough to have one of the boilers you can’t self install – but after getting it hooked up, was so easy to get configured and hooked into my smart systems.
This is easy to use and responsive.
Screen wakes up correctly and I’ve yet to have it woken up by a “ghost”.
I’m still not sure if I trust it’s internal thermometer, but I’ve integrated it with SmartThings and sensors all round the house, so they tell it when to come off and on.
If does give interesting stats and estimates as to when it thinks it’ll reach the temperature, which is good.
Def helps manage energy a bit better.
I oredered the Nest thermostat after some very positive experience using the Nest Protect products (3 units) and the Nest application. The thermostat it replaced was about 30 years old so quite a technology leap.
I had it installed by a Nest Pro Installer who went above and beyond the norms and did a great job (50 installation with some additional wiring work as the hub is located near my water tank upstairs not near the boiler). Everything went well without any hiccups and my system (even though its 30 years old) allows the unit to control the heating too.
I really like the thermostat – nice look and feel to it and fairly easy to use and set up. The schedule is easy to use too and I appreciate the ability to look up the previous days usage on the app.
The only thing that I don’t like is that you can’t turn the heating off – you have to set a very low temperature at the times you want it off. You can turn the unit off but then of course it won’t heat up the house when you need it. Seems to work ok though but I guess after years of using analogue technology its a different thing but can’t see why it can’t do this.
I often get told by the app that useage is down/up due to weather or due to manual changes which is good to know. It also advises that the temperature has been reduced by the ‘away from home’ function when it detects you’re not around – so I am really hopeful that this will save me some money in the long run.
Of course, being able to turn on/off the heater or boost your water from your phone is great and certainly makes things easier.
The only other minus is connectivity – if my wifi drops (service provider issue) this means that i can control the heating and water from the hub only.
Overall, I can fully recommend the Nest thermostat.
I bought this to replace HIVE that was already installed in my new house. HIVE didn’t have the smart technology to allow you to say you want the house to reach 19C by 7am for example and turning the heating on early to achieve this. With HIVE all I could do was to say it to switch on at a specified time no matter how cold the cold had become over night.
The ability to monitor and adjust heating and hot water via the mobile phone app when away from home is extremely useful too.
It also looks more attractive than any similar products.
Wow. This makes it much easier to control the central heating. The software within and the app are slick and clever.
My Mison Velaire boiler was officially too old for this, however my electrician installed a relay (contactor) between the Nest Heat Link and the boiler switch and another relay between the Nest Heat Link and the immersion heater switch. The old timers were binned.
The result is useful full control of both heating and (separate) hot water system from the app. Just to add that we use an immersion heater on night time electricity to heat the water for the morning shower.
This attractive well build piece of kit looks good and contains an incredible array of functions and controls. It is well worth getting a Pro to install the Nest and discuss the basic functions. The Nest website contains a wealth of information and the Support guys called me to answer a question i had.
It takes a couple of weeks to start and understand how the Nest works but it is definately worthwhile spending the time. I would definately recommend have a qualified Engineer check and balance your system especially if you have radiators installed as this will help make everything more efficient and economical.
I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to adding the extras that are available.
First off I recommend having a Nest pro install your Nest. Once installed they will input their details onto the thermostat that yoi can quickly look up to contact if you have issues in future.
The display looks fantastic, and is very simple to use. To adjust temperate simply turn the dial up of down like a conventional thermostat. Once hooked up to a smartphone setting a heating and hot water schedule is easy.
The thermostat also learns. If you get home at 4 and turn the heating on, it begins to programme the heating to come on at 4 every day.
I have linked my Nest to Alexa. The set up was easy and using the feature is simple. Simply ask Alexa to set the heating to a desired temperature and away you go.
Excellent product. Installed it myself. Don’t believe the online guides showing how easy it is. That all depends on your individual home boiler and thermostat setup.
Once installed you need to set it up and let it learn how you use your energy consumption. This is an ongoing process that is constantly updating itself. I fully expect to reduce our bills by far more than the advertised 30% as there was a lot of wasted energy.
If you can take the time to read the specifications and features on this product, it’s got everything and does more than you could possibly imagine.
Unlike a lot of products this is a very high quality item and has a great all round finish. So if you can pick one of these little bad boys up for under 200, they’re well worth the money.
Super quick and easy installation. The app takes some getting used to, with a variety of different options that you have to work out if they suit you, so it’ll take some time to find the right settings. You only have the option to be at Home or Away, and if you’re Away, it will not respect your schedule of the heating coming on at a certain time. This is annoying as if I’m Away but home in 20 minutes I want the thermostat to be on and heating for when I arrive at Home, that needs some work.
Arrived well packaged and the thermostat feels sold and well built. It reminds me of an Apple product, well designed and engineered. I did a self installation and it all went well but if you are not sure about safely wiring electrical items it would be worthwhile to arrange for someone to do it for you. The iPhone App works well and does everything I want.
It is a fairly expensive item but as I did not have a thermostat fitted to my existing system it was worthwhile for me, especially as it could be transferred to a new boiler if I have one fitted at a future date. If you already have a working thermostat, mounted in a suitable place, then unless you need the remote access, I’m not sure it is worth buying this.
The nest looks fantastic and extremely unique, I love walking past it in the hallway of my home and it lighting up telling me the temperature. Having it connected to my phone is a huge plus and being able to control it from anywhere in the world is amazing! I now have it connected to my google home device and that is the icing on the cake! Who new having a smart thermostat would be so cool.
Very clear documentation to understand the install. Simple and pain free installation (for peace of mind with a Nest recommended electrician). Easy and Simple. You need to think about where it should be located and, if you want a minimalist, “clean wall” look, you will need power outlet at that point feeding in behind thermostat location. Otherwise you can use the cradle, which looks elegant.
Has been effortless to use since installation, both directly and via phone/web browser. You can set a schedule in the traditional way – or take a leap of faith and allow the thermostat to “learn” your routines and optimise heating efficiency and economy – this appears to work well.
I’m using the Nest thermostat for over a year now with gas fired central heating (hot water + rads). It was easy to setup – a ‘drop in’ replacement for my old wireless thermostat which had developed a fault. The only tricky bit was the heat link wiring as my existing wires were a bit big for the terminals.
Its a nice thermostat, easy to set and read. I haven’t made much use of the ‘smart’ learning feature – which I switched off when the Nest decided I needed heat during the night. I may try them again.
Overall I would recommend this as an easy to use stat – even if you don’t use the smart features. The colourful screen and proximity sensor makes it much better than older grey lcd screen devices.
Brilliant. Has learnt our heating habits, works well with Alexa and Google Home and is a quality piece of kit. I like the ‘HAL 2000’ look of it, even if my wife is unsure. The face plate to fit to the wall is good to cover the old square back box. I was replacing an existing generation 1 smart thermostat, so this was a revolution in form and function.
Really pleased so far.
If I wanted to independently control multi zones in the house, I might have opted for a different solution, as the only way to do this with nest is to fit a nest per zone. That’s not the case with me, as most our rooms are occupied when we are home.
A great device, one of the few who deserve the lable “smart home”.
You can set it up yourself if you’re an above average DIYer, it took me a couple of hours with some extra cabling needed from the distribution board for the hot water + concealing the cable the thermostat itself to the Smart Hive in the wall.
A word of caution: DO NOT try to set it up yourself unless you’re not absolutely sure of what you’re doing: there’s a risk of fatal electrical hazard -or, less dangerous but still costly, of damaging the thermostat. Do not play around with electricity 🙁
Once the cabling and mounting is complete, setting up your Nest and pairing it with the app itself is a breeze: after connecting to your wifi network, a few questions about your household, the location of the thermostat, geographical location of your home, etc…, it’s ready: just set up your ideal temperature and forget about it! After a week-10 days, the “learning” process will be complete and the thermostat will adjust the temperature automatically if you have set it up yourself a couple of times (e.g. lowering temperature at night and raising it again when you wake up).
The “Away” feature is also excellent: when you leave on holidays for example, the Nest will automatically sense the home is empty (+based on your mobile phone’s location), and set its function to “eco” an energy-saving temperature + turn off the hot water schedule. Just brilliant!
Finally, the hot water schedule is also very easy to set up, bar a minor glitch in the app (Android version, at least), in which you have to set up each day separately for the scheduling to function properly instead of setting up several days at once. I would also have liked a little more flexibility in the duration of the boiler activation (it only accepts 30mins increments), I hope Nest will fix this in a future update. But these are minor comments in the overall experience.
Conclusion: this thermostat can be a little pricey but it’s arguably best in class, very efficient, and a beautiful object in itself. Highly recommended!
New boiler necessitated an upgrade to a programmble thermostat which wasnt easy to program. Did some research and thought the Nest would suit my needs. However, at nearly 200 when I started looking I thought I would wait and see if any special offers came around. Managed to bag 3rd gen and a stand for 150 which was still a little expensive but hey ho. Bit the bullet and had it installed along with a new combi boiler. Luckily my brother went on the NEST registered installer course so the install wemt smoothly and without a hitch. Easy to set up and register. Cant really find fault with it but hope it lasts as long as the boiler which is guaranteed for 10 years!
Produce owners seem to request a review very quickly after the product has been installed, not really giving you time to fully evaluate the product. It’s been less than a week and to date I have found the nest very easy to use and seems to meet my requirements. I haven’t had it long enough for it to learn my routine which I have to say isn’t much of a routine. That is one of the reasons why I purchased it. The thought of the heating being on when Im not at home is a total waste of money. Now I can adopt to fit into my day.
Installed the thermostat myself and saved a small fortune from the nest pro. First thermostat developed an issue and had to phone nest helpline. After 30 minutes they decided I needed a new system and offered a free pro install! I didn’t need the pro! Installed new new system and no problems since!
The system is smart enough to learn how long it takes my house to reach a temperature and preheats to reach it at the desired time which is brilliant!
I can’t sing it’s praises enough! I real top bit of kit! If anything im annoyed with myself that I didn’t buy this two years ago!!! Intelligent, comfortable and money saving!
Don’t give it a second thought folks… buy!
I like gadgets, but this is much more than a gadget. The set up is via the thermostat itself and when you get a really good electrician to set it up like ACJ Electrical Ltd in Hertfordshire at a fraction of the Nest recommended installers it makes it a great product less expensive. Instructions are easy to follow, and the phone app can be used to control it if necessary. I get monthly reports about how much energy I have used.
I don’t really have to do anything, it just switches itself on and off in accordance with me being at home.
I am really happy with it. If anyone has a query, I would be happy to try to help
After researching the available thermostats on the market we went for the Nest Learning Thermostat. The Pro installer was great he had a cancellation and was able to fit us in on the same day. The equipment is easy to use as is the app for both iPhone and Android. So far so good. It lights up when you walk past and reminds you of the current temperature and to what temp it is currently working. The eco mode helps ensure you are getting the best out of the heating system.
I live with two females, one is a South African human. The other is a Maine Coon (Big furry cat from Canada). This posses a problem and clouds can form at doors and windows due to the temperature difference. Nest is controlling the temperature so accurately that there are no more spikes of heat and then freezing again due to delay possible dying old thermostat. Both of the ladies in my life are now happy and I can wear clothes indoors again. Be prepared to need a professional for install. And hopefully I will save as much as a friend of mine did in one year of having it – 300. It’ll pay for its self!
I do love the nest having had one in my previous house. The best feature by far is it learns very well when it needs to start heating the house to get to the temperature you want at the time that you want. It learns how to adjust this according to the temperature outside.
The second really good feature is that if you are away for the weekend you can remotely turn on the boiler on the way back home to get the house warm by the time you return.
From a Money saving perspective I think the main advantage is the away feature. If you and your partner leave the house then it detects this either by sound and movement in the house or you can configure your phones so that when both of you leave the boiler will turn off.
A very nice and smart product which controls your gas boiler (mine being a 20 year old Potterton model) using auto setup for the entire week. I went for an Nest approved engineer to fix the unit and they did a great job in installing the product in less than an hour and explained the features and controls and that includes setting up to your wi-fi network.
It’s been approximately two month since this product got installed at home and I really see the benefits of controlled heating at required times rather than 3 – 4 hour duration of general heating with my old thermostat fixed with the boiler.
Pro’s
1. A big advantage with Nest is that this device can be controlled by mobile, ipad and other family members who are connected to it. So, if this needs to be switched on while you are away, you can do it at your own convenience without any hassle. I have tried and it worked absloutely in a way I expected.
2. Also, this model comes with a remote sensor which detects the movement and enables the display which allows the current temperature it’s been setup. This is very useful if you forget to switch off the heater if its on Manual setup.
3. Got the monthly report from Nest which includes daily usage of central heating and how much it costed. This is very useful to compare the usage with my meter readings that I get from the device provided by my gas provider.
Cons
1. Bit expensive to pay upfront plus the installation charge from gas engineer
2. User manual not that friendly to start unless you are a real geek.
All in all, its a great device to control your heating and hot water and in turn your electricity and gas bills 🙂
A lovely piece of kit, I had a minor issue during the setup process – the installation guide told me to go to ‘Settings -> Nest App’, but that option didn’t exist, I needed to setup some sort of account first, then that gave me the number I needed to enter into the mobile app, then the ‘Settings -> Nest App’ option appeared… Sounds complicated when I write it like that, but it wasn’t really 😉
Note that I chose to integrate with a mobile phone, but you can use this device standalone.
The animation is really nice, you almost want to change the temerature more often just to see how cool it is.
So pleased we put this in our home. It was very good value, as bought it on offer. We got our plumber to put this in for us and it was very tricky for him to do. Don’t know if that was specific to heating and water setup we have. Since we’ve had it, we’ve definitely reduced the among of gas we use. What’s really handy is that, by using the phone app, we can put the heating and or hot water on before we get home.
Had it for about eight months now and very impressed. Dropped a star because it discnnects from the home wifi sometimes.
Controlling the heat settings remotely using smart phone is excellent as is the history. Like the geo function that shuts it all down when it sees the registered smart phones are away from the property and switches the heating on when it detects a phone returning.
I installed it myself and found it fairly easy. If you aren’t confident with electrics I’d go for the professional install though.
Our house temperature is certainly more accurate now and I recommend this product if you are in the market for a remote thermostat.
Good looking and modern thermostat with some flaws.
Pros.
1. Very elegant to look at and easy to set up.
2. Very easy to use, simply connect up and rotate to get the temperature.
3. Able to control remotely using a tablet/phone.
4. Cost. Given that a Honeywell 7 day programmer is 125, for 55 more I got this better looking thermostat with more features.
Cons.
1. The schedule. It’s really bad at putting together a schedule. One look at the online schedule and you’ll realise it’s created a mess. I would prefer something far more linear and consistent.
Had my Nest fitted a few months now, absolutely love it. Being able to control my heating or have have tankful of water for a bath, even if I have forgot to set the timer for coming home. Using the Nest app in work i can turn it on remotely, i find it amazing.
Just back from Mexico, Nest had went into eco mode to keep the chill of my house and save oil, on landing home from the app I was able to come home to a warm house. Great product and technical help is never far away.
This is a great addition to any home. Nice looking and fairly easy to use. We had an issue where we couldn’t fit ion the wall in the same place as the old thermostat due to only mains powered cable being there and the Nest requires a specific 12v low amp power so we have ended up using the supplied USB power adapter and have to purchase the optional stand.
Would highly recommend to contact a proper nest installer prior to buying just to check there will be no issues. And use them to fit if in doubt as it’s not that straight forward to install.
We also got two mains powered smoke/co2 dectectors for downstairs and upstairs as they will shut down the boiler if they detect co2
I have to say I’ve been really really impressed with my nest… i was stuck between nest and hive…but I’ve had nest for about two monthd now and it’s amazing…the device can be managed from my phone and the temp kicks in right away..ive managed it from work and out and about… it has its own schedule time on a time line which is handy because if you find it colder at a certain time at night you can fire it up… I’ve also notice my gas bill being reduced by a 1 a day so far which will be more in other seasons… so annually couple hundred saved.
The system is smart enough to know when your not home…so if it doesn’t sense any movements your not burning gas.
The device looks absolutely beautiful very solid and so easy to use.
We got this installed by nest they did a very clean and professional job…really considering buying more from the rang like the smoke detector.
Just moved in to a new house. Well new to me, 1930’s to the world. I had a 90s thermostat on the wall and the heating was either really cold or really hot. I bought this Nest 3rd gen Thermostat to replace it but thought that I can’t see it making that much difference. WELL I WAS WRONG. I noticed it almost right away. Its amazing !!. I can’t figure out how it can be so much better but now my house is keeping to a great temp and no doubt saving me money. I installed it myself and I am just a DIY chump. There are some good you tube vids if you get stuck.
I spent time reading reviews for nearly all for the smart thermostat systems out there and plumped for Nest in the end. I’m certainly glad I did. The system is a well built a quality one, the thermostat itself feels and looks great. Operation is very intuitive, simple yet comprehensive.
I have a combination boiler and wired this in myself after reading the instructions, it was pretty simple if you are competent DIY’er. But if in doubt, have it installed professionally.
System learns my heating preferences and sends me monthly reports too. Knows when I go out and when i’m coming home too. Oh, and I can ask Alexa to turn up or down my heating. All in all a great bit of kit.
Amazing device. Looks super cool on the wall and after a few weeks of manually adjusting it just takes over and you barely need to touch it again. Works great for hot water also. Would be 5 stars but for some reason it doesn’t seem to be able to put itself into eco mode when I’m away from the house even though my phone is linked to it. Overall definitely would recommend to anyone though this thing is incredibly smart technology.
I did some research before buying and watched their You Tube video showing how you can instal this yourself in 30 minutes but that is not correct for the UK as our voltage is different and has to be professionally installed. That cost 80 and took about 40 minutes. I love the display and it is very easy to use. I find the app slightly less easy to use.
I’m only 24hours in but so far I love the Nest thermostat. I had it installed by a professional, set up my account, input a schedule and that was it, very easy. The controller that came with the boiler was awful so Nest is a welcome replacement.
I’ve disabled the auto-schedule learning because I found that the heating often overshoots desired temperature (this is not due to the Nest) and the auto-schedule then adopts the higher temperature as a target.
It will detect when you leave home and automatically default to “eco” i.e. a low temperature. It takes into account the time it takes to get a room to desired temperature so you never have to get up to a freezing cold house. I’ve just reduced the target temperature in my schedule because the Nest seems to somehow make the heating feel more consistent so I don’t need to ramp it up. Long may it last.
Nice display, its dropped the wifi connection a couple of times.
my biggest gripe is that the hot water label is fixed to say “hot water”. that’s fine if you want it to control your hot water. but what if you want to control something else with it, like supplementary heating, or even a light?
Nest doesn’t even want suggestions like this.
I’ve now bought 4 of these, 3 for my big house and one for my daughters’ house.
I noticed the last one I bought at 30.00 cheaper than the usual price, so I went for that, only to discover, that the cheaper priced one comes without a USB power supply, which is a requirement to make it work ( its not a battery device).
fortunately, I had a spare usb power supply so I was still able to get it workin right away.
Considering, a USB power supply is usually only about a fiver, then at 30.00 cheaper for the box without one, its worth considering.
We purchased this product last July but it’s only now that heating is required that we can truly appreciate it. This has to be one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. It does not require any programming and it’s easy to use whether in the house or remotely using your phone or tablet. And the best part is that we’ve already started to generate savings from reduced energy consumption.
One word of caution however : unless you have particular skills in electronics, this is not an item that you can easily install yourself. If it is possible to provide referrals as part of these reviews, we live in Central London and ours was installed by Leo of LJ Heating at 07796 695 551 or [email protected]
Leo worked hard to ensure that it could be installed on the wall to replace our existing thermostat. The alternative was to have it on a portable stand which was not our preference.
I hope this review is helpful for people considering the purchase of this item.

This has been an absolute revolution for the house. Going from a simple timer and on radiator thermostatic valves which basically had the heating running continually whilst on, the heating is only coming on when absolutely needed, you can even track the length of time it is on. The addition of being able to lock the thermostat so the temperature can only be adjusted within pre-defined limits is great, especially if you have lodgers, children (or in my case AirBnB guests). The app which you need to download to control remotely also allows you to pre-program your on off times quickly as you can copy and paste the program from one day to the next (I’m using on Android so can’t speak to iOS). I await to see what impact this has on my gas bills however this early in the winter it is too early to tell.
The Nest is brilliant. We love the way you can see at a glance when it is calling for heat, just by the colour of the screen, how the display comes on when you approach, how it tells you the difference between room temperature and set temperature and how long it will take to close the gap. We love how it knows what the weather is doing and if we have gone out.
We love its classy styling, simplicity of use and most of all how much it is saving us on wasted and unnecessary heat.
Just in case you are wondering we have no connection with the company, neither hard wired or through the ether, paid full price and are both silver surfers.
The Nest 3rdGen is so easy to use.
Our old wireless thermostat had gone haywire, but I had always hated it. It was too complicated and had a tiny display. I literally needed a magnifying glass to make adjustments.
In contrast the Nest is very clear and very simple. It lends itself to adjustments up or down whenever the need arises rather than making do. I love the fact that I can turn the temperature down when I am out or if I am away longer than anticipated. No more wasting heat in an empty house. It will give me the confidence to leave the house for a winter break as I will know how the house is faring.
The thermostat is great looking like the rest of nest products. The thermostat has a lot of options and easy to control via the app. Without going inside each feature, I want to report a great customer service. I had a problem with the sync with the heat link so I couldn’t use the thermostat straight out of the box but, one call to the customer support and after 2 working days I had the replacement with free installation. I guess I was no lucky but with this customer service it doesn’t matters. I repeat one call and problem solved now everything is great.
Very happy with the app and with the hardware the next step for Nest is adding the control for TRV valves after that the control over the heating will absolutely perfec
Compared to my old wireless thermostat/pin wheel timer this is a revolution. I no longer heat the house when nobody is at home and hardly have to touch the thing at all. The installer helped me set up my basic schedule and now the thing happily gets on with things and to the point where it will check to see where you are when it is due to fire up and if nobody is at home or appreciably close to home it will hold on. It learns how quickly it comes up to temperature and will start up when it needs to.
It interacts with Nest Protect smoke/CO alarms and smartphones to help work out when people are home, very clever.
Easy to use and very well designed, I recommend highly.
This is a great bit of kit, looks good and certainly helps to reduce heating bills. An intuitive, simple to use device which has some smart functions built in. I especially like the ability to turn the heating up and down from my IPad from anywhere in the world. Also great to turn up the heating from the settee without getting up. Packaging and quality reminiscent of apple products and will install one in my next house when I move. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is the cost which I think is somewhat overpriced.
It works. Learns what your schedule is, what temperature you like it. Fit and forget.
The coming home app is an highly recommended augmentation, to turn off the heating when you leave the house, and back up when you arrive home automatically. Based on mobile phone location. The app doesn’t increase battery drain appreciably. This should be integrated into the Nest app though.
Plumber had no problems installing on my Worcester Bosch boiler in the UK.
Looks great, feels great to use, great user interface. Would be better if they had extra motion detectors for other rooms, without having to buy another Nest.
There should be a separate holiday mode to away mode, because as far as I can tell, pre heat doesn’t work if the thermostat is in away mode, which means you can have auto on/ off based on location, or pre heat, but not both.
Great product, easy to install yourself if confident with the wiring. Fitted it to my existing oil fired boiler that didn’t have a room stat as I was spending forever fiddling around with the stupid radiator stats to get the temperature right in the room. Feels a bit weird not having to set up a schedule for the heating to go on and off (you do need to set it for the hot water though and that is easy enough to do using the app or web site) and we occasionally forget too turn it down when we leave home but as you can do that from your phone when you remember it isn’t that much of an issue. Overall very please with i
Great thermostat, it looks good and is easy to fit, but it isn’t perfect. The minimum time between scheduled items (on/off) is an hour, but I’d like to see 30 min or even 15 min. Also, my heating randomly comes on at 4am, I only know this because I have a logging device on my gas meter. So over all it probably doesn’t save you money, but remove my controlling the temperature is good. But the iPhone app also sucks, could be made much smarter by working with location services, wifi detection and also some more notifications (eg. Set to auto away, motion detection etc).
Since we installed the thermostat, the house has been much more comfortable as regards to temperature, I installed the best myself, and found it very easy to do. We have had outs first gas bill since installing and it is down 39% but this is probably due in part to a very mild winter as well as the thermostat. Prior to the installation if the hearing was required to be on it would be for about 3-4 hours solid a day, now with the best managing the temperature the longest it has been on is a total of 2.5 hours and that was on a very cold day
I did not really know what to expect from this, other than a simply schedule to turn on/off the central heating. After it arrived, I found it could control my hot water too! BONUS !! So looked at the installation and immediately looked for an installer .. took a couple of days to find someone but thank goodness I found a great person!
Back to the NEST .. in simple terms, BRILLIANT! I have control of my heating on my Tablet, laptop, PC etc. I’ve had a couple of days and I’m speechless.. it’s giving me control I never had before. And I have a real working thermostat that works.. I’m still trying to work out why it fires up the heating at night even AFTER the last timed setting has been performed.. I would be expecting it to remain off. But hey, I’ve just had it a couple of days..
One thing to note.. make sure your engineer knows how to ‘balance’ the temp on the Boiler and the hot water tank, if you have one. I’m glad our’s went and did this for us. It made a huge difference to how long it takes to warm up the rad’s and the house overall.
I’m hooked on NEST.. now I desperately looking to see what else I can make the NEST control !!!!
I live in Spain and it works perfectly with a common boiler. You only have to connect the 220V AC supply to N (neutral, commonly blue wire) and L (line, commonly black, brown or gray wire) connectors in the heat link. If you already have a thermostat with batteries as power supply probably is one working with a relay at 12/24V DC. In this case (please check it to avoid damage in equipment, some may work at 220V AC) you only have to connect old thermostat wires to connectors 2 and 3 in heat link. And that’s all, it works. 🙂
