Unpack and plug in and go.

This is quite a lot bigger than I had expected – but it’s not a problem; it comes with a decent length power cord so it sits in the corner and does it’s thing without being overly obtrustive. It comes with a good set of documentation and instruction and you get a three year warranty with it. It stands 850mm (about 34 inches) high – presumably it needs to have a decent separation between the air intake and the output?

With 3 fan speed and an auto-mode it includes a UV lamp inside which kills bacteria of various kinds. On the highest fan setting the noise level is very high – but at the lowest setting it’s barely audible in a daytime room.

With a timer which you can set to have the unit on at certain times of the day and features like a night light and an air quality indicator this has all the features you might need to improve the air quality in your home for the benefit of asthma sufferers or people with other respiritory problems.

My mom suffers from with a bad chest and I wanted to try one of these for her to help with her breathing and while it hasn’t cleared her of her almost constant chest infections, it has helped. I wouldn’t say it was easy to install for me, but don’t let that put you off as I have trouble with the simplest of tasks some days. I am that friend you look at and think, how are you still alive? So for what I struggled with my brother found it easy peasy. Also it looks like something out of star wars and I’m just living for that. It does what it says it does, which is always the main thing and I think people over look that fact in wanting something do everything for them, including folding their clothes. To me, if it does it’s job, that’s all that matters. I haven’t noticed anything about the scent (one of the things asked on the review) but I’m not there all the time. I am very happy with it and more importantly, so is my mom.

Delivery prompt and as promised. However, the switch that governs the fan speed is not working properly. All the other features-operated by a featherlight touch-work perfectly but I can’t easily change the fan speed. It does change, but only after repeated tries. It took about 30 minutes getting it back to 1 so I can run it in the night (it’s quiet on 1, but way too noisy for night use on any other setting)

It has really cleared the air and dust after some building work. It is very efficient. Could have had handles for ease of movement as it is a little heavy. Otherwise very pleased and attractive to look at. Time will tell about reliability.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersCleans dust slowly but gathers quite well, after 8 days of use it collected quite abit of dust. Its very noisy on high setting but on setting 1 and 2 it’s okay. It blows out cool air and has blue night light, which can be turned on and off. Overall it’s pretty good so far as it has reduced the dust in my room and definitely breathing fresher cleaner air.

Collects dust over time and gives you fresher cleaner air, very easy to use and clean.

A powerful filter that is able to process a lot of air in a short space of time. Ideal for cooking smells and pet allergies, not to mention the hayfever season. I have given four stars as I felt that the quietest mode was a little noisier than another filter I have, but it’s swings and roundabouts, as the other machine isn’t as powerful.

The oil part of the purifier does not seem to work. Oils have been placed on the pad yet nothing can be smelt. I use it when I am painting in the home or have stronger unwanted smells when cooking and it works wonders. I also use it in the summer as I gives off a nice cool breeze which also cools the room

This is a fantastic air purifier and has already made such a different already. We keep this going by my Partners bed and even over night he’s finally not been stuffed up and blowing his nose all night. He reacts badly to dust and this has dramatically improved the air quality and he swears by this already.

We also have mould in our bedroom and bathroom from the damp weather so we feel healthier knowing it’s helping to clear the air from the harmful spores. We’re prone to chest problems from them and so this is helping work in conjunction with our other purifier.

It’s easy to operate, plug in and go and can work on auto or selected settings. It’s not too noisy, when it kicks in it just sounds a bit like a fan for a while then it goes to sleep until it detects anything in the air – we tend to keep it on auto.

This really is invaluable especially for allergy sufferers or houses with mould spores to keep the air healthy. Recommended, great product and great quality.

Bought for a couple in late 70s/early 80s. Turns out to be very easy for them to learn to use reliably and has greatly improved their sleep. Slightly more noisy than they can sleep through all the time, so they run for a couple of hours before going to bed and then have had the best sleep they’ve had for years.

Very high end air purifier will multiple modes. Not many people will actually need this if you just want a basic one but i’m sure this model is built to last. Very good product that just has a premium build. The removal of paint odor was what we used it for initially as we had just moved into our new house. It was literally paint smelling free after just one night on for 10 hours. I’m impressed.

I really love this air purifier, it is a significant upgrade on my previous purifier. We need a purifier because my son suffers from allergies, hayfever imparticularly being the worse.
Those that dont suffer from allergies can never really empathise with someone who does, but wathcing my son suffer over the years has not been nice from a parental point of view. Our first purifier significantly helped reduce allergies around the house and my sons sufference improved.
We then moved onto using this purifier during the back end of the summer and I can attest that this purifier removes a significant higher amount of allergies in the air.
What I love about this purifier is that it stands higher and looks a lot neater than the large box purifier that our previous edition.
The purifier isn’t as quiet as what it claims to be, but it is powerful and uses a different type of filtering that can be easily replaced or even cleaned, which is a novel feature. HEPA filters last up to 5 times longer than the regular filters and I can confirm that the HEPA filters do offer more longevity.
There is also an oil tray that allows the addition of essential oils if you so desire. The device also omits a UVC light that is supposed to reduce the amount of germs, but it is difficult to know whether this feature is doing what is says.
There are 3 speeds and an auto feature that switches between each. Set up is easy enough and the device is easy to use.
The tower design takes up less room but is a far better looking machine than our box version and I happy for this device to stay out in living room.

I’ve been wanting to try an air purifier for a while as I have very sensitive skin and wanted to see if one helped, so I was very glad when this popped up!

The unit itself comes in a large box adored with all the info you may need about it! The purifier itself it a little smaller than a expected, it’s about the same size as a kitchen bin and it very light and easy to move around.
It’s very sleek and nice looking and fits in well in my living room. It has three fan settings, the first one starts quite full on but quickly lowers to a fairly quiet hum that tolerable whilst listening to music or watching TV. The second setting down kick up more of a noise and the third is pretty noisy. I would only use these last two settings if I was out or in a different room for a bit.

It also has the option to turn on a blue light strip that is quite subtle along with the option for UV-C and ION. I haven’t used these yet but they’re super easy to turn on if needed.
There’s also the option to set up a timer for the unit of 2,4,8 or 12 hours. These are really useful for setting the unit up to those noises settings whilst you’re at work but not wanting to over use it!
It also has the option to add essential oils, there’s a little tray that comes out to add them. I haven’t tried this yet as i have a cat and i’m not too sure whether he’d be ok with it but i do think it’s a good option to have.

Overall a really nice bit of kit that i’m enjoying having in my flat! (we’ll see in a few months how it helps my skin!)

One of the most important things is how quiet it is on its lowest setting so I have made a video to demonstrate this and other things.

It is very slim so it has a tiny footprint – very handy where floorspace is at a premium.

It also has a memory function – please see my video.

We’ve tried a couple of different air filters in our house because 1) we like to sleep with some low background noise, and 2) due to dust allergies. This model happily ticks the boxes albeit at a rather steep price.

The cylindrical shape of the filter means that dust particles get pulled in from all directions, with a light breeze venting out of the top. There is an additional compartment in which you can place a pad with a few drops of essential oil, which is quite a nice feature. We tried lavender oil and it gives the room a nice fresh scent.

In terms of features and modes, this is rather hi-tech, including “ION” and “UV-C” modes which respectively are meant to attract dust more effectively, and kill microbes. It’s impossible to say if these modes make any difference, other than taking the manufacturer’s word for it. It does beg the question why you wouldn’t want these modes on at all times though. Additionally there are buttons to set timers, so that it switches off automatically after 2/4/8/12 hours. There is also a blue nightlight mode which is quite nice – we’ve tried this ut in our 3 year old’s room and she’s quite fond of it.

    Only 2 criticisms really:

1.It’s pretty huge, so be sure to check the dimensions and make sure you have space for it.

    2. which applies to all of these types of filters, is that occasionally the soothing low hum can turn into a slight rattle, and it’s very hard to pinpoint what, if anything, is causing it. This is rare though and probably me being very pedantic as I use it to help me get to sleep.

All in all very pleased with this!

They do an excellent job of filtering the air. This is perfect size for a medium sized room. I have one in the dinning room and bedroom and it has kept the dust particles way down. I used to dust and 5 minutes later there was more dust on the furniture. Now there is hardly any dust even after a couple of weeks.

This air filter has made my whole home feel more airy and spacious, it is like the air is feathery light.
it can get rather loud when on the highest setting whoever this moves a LOT of air, and is great if you need to get a room clean.
The air filtration is amazing, I noticed that the amount of dust in my house has dramatically reduces and that there is quite a lot of debris on the filter element itself.
The auto function is handy ish, however I wouldn’t pay extra for this feature because the faster the fan goes the nosier it is. I always stick it on medium when I leave (high if its a new room) and low when I am around

I was pleased to receive the HoMedics TotalClean Air Purifier – As someone who suffers with allergies and asthma it’s a welcome addition to the home. It was extremely easy to get up and running, in fact out of the box, plug in and away you go. The settings are very easy to navigate, three fan/speed choices or an automatic option which is my preferred. The auto feature recognises when there are more allergens in the air and increases and decreases speed accordingly to clear the air more quickly.

I installed the air purifier in my bedroom and it took a while to clear the air on initial set-up, after that it goes up and down as is needed. I particularly notice it changing when spraying deodorant and perfumes in the room. I can say it has certainly made a difference to my breathing and coughing when sleeping on a night so would certainly recommend it on that respect.

The option to turn the display lights off is great, given my choice to use it in the bedroom. However, I do feel the ‘whisper quiet’ advertisement is some what of an overstatement. Unfortunately, this air purifier does not have any recognition of when it is night time/low light, meaning it will change fan speeds during the night when on the auto setting which I find can wake you up. This additional function is one I find useful on another device that I own and is located in the lounge, with changing fan speeds not an issue in the daytime.

Overall, the HoMedics TotalClean Air Purifier is a great item for those with allergies or asthma but perhaps only for use in living and not sleeping spaces.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a great air purifier which has loads of features. The best thing about it is the automatic function which senses air particles and changes the fan accordingly, which for me makes it worth the money. It’s pretty big and suits our 18’5″x11’10” lounge (which is also attached to our 7’7″x8’11” kitchen with no door) perfectly.

    Pros:
    – The design is really modern. The white and dark blue look great and it’s a good shape. It looks futuristic
    – The filter is huge. There is a slot at the back which is easy to remove so you can change the filters easily
    – It has an ioniser which is good for removing odours, and a UV feature which is great for killing germs
    – There are four timer options which are great if you just want to leave it going. Mix that with the automatic feature and it’s great – it will alter the fan speed dependant on how hard it thinks it needs to work (it works so well, it goes red when it’s smokey for example and changes it to level 3 and will go back down to green, level 1. It disables the manual fan button in this mode)
    – Purifies air very well. It removes the smell from our living room after we cook, filters out smoke and also lifts the smell of our pets too
    – It has a nice ambient night light, or you can turn the light off in night mode
    – Oil slot is an excellent additional feature. Just drop some essential oil on the little pads included, and it circulates the room with lovely aromas (just be careful not to get it on anything but the pads)
    – Isn’t too loud – has a nice relaxing low pitch

    Cons:
    – It’s really big! It’s quite lightweight but some might not like the size of it
    – It sometimes makes a quiet rattling noise. Moving it slightly tends to fix it, so I’m not sure if it’s just something that vibrates on start up but it does stop after a few seconds

All in all, the automatic function and the aromatherapy to me make the amount it’s being sold for worth it. It’s feature rich and noticeably filters the air. It’s more expensive than other purifiers so it’s worth doing your research but if you want a top quality one where the fan adjusts depending on the air quality, go for this one. The rattle loses it a star though. Highly recommended.

Update: The rattle has now gone away! I adjusted the way it was sat and gave the top a light tap and it has stopped. So 5 stars. 🙂

Automatically adjusts to match air quality

HoMedics TotalClean 5 in 1 Tower Air Purifier with True HEPA Filtration, Removes Allergens, Pet Dander, Smoke, Cooking, Mould Spores & Germs, Ionizer Releases Negative Ions – Medium, White

    The product.
This is an air filtration system which remove airborne particles.

    Features.
It has several settings including a night mode which is very quiet and I can sleep with it on in the bedroom. There are 3 fan speeds, it is noisy on the fastest speed but that can be said for all of these machines (we have a Philips one as well.). It is well made and easy to move around.

    Effectiveness.
It really does clean the air very well. We have both noticed we wake up without being bunged up. The air smells like a fresh breeze with no odours or musty smells. It works very well in out 14 Ft by 12 Ft bedroom.

    Overall.
These machines really do work and improve the quality of the air you breath. They also cut down on dust and airborne pathogens making the air much healthier to breath. The particle filter can be replaced when it becomes blocked, I can’t find out how much one is but I would not think it would be too much. The benefits will definitely outweigh the cost. We have it on every night and the difference has been marked. Highly recommended.

A heavy duty air purifier that can process a lot of air in a short space of time, if you have it on full blast. There are three levels, but no ‘quiet’ mode, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re easily distracted by sounds. Noise-wise, the lowest speed is reasonably quiet, like a fan on its lowest setting. Fortunately, there is a timer, so if you suffer from allergies, you can simply give your room a two-hour (or more) blast before you use it. There is also a UV-C germ killing function and an ioniser.

Overall, an effective machine. If power is your main priority, I can recommend this. If noise, or lack of it, is really important, then I’d look elsewhere.

Does it improve air quality. It certainly feels like it does. It’s a very big product so have to put it somewhere. I am annoyed it doesn’t have a screen for a countdown but it’s fine. My issue with these products is the need to replace the filters every 1-3 moths depending how bad it is and considering the cost of this to start it’s going to cost a lot to keep your air clear.

Best for people with pete smokers and allergies

As my husband suffers from asthma he was keen to try this out. We sleep in an attic bedroom and sometimes find that we feel a bit groggy in the mornings in the winter, if we have been using the heating, so I thought it might be worth trying for that also.

SET-UP – basically remove from the box, take off the plastic bag covering it, and plug it in and switch it on. Simple as that!
There are 3 speed settings but genuinely the quietest setting is still REALLY loud – I could hear it from downstairs (1st floor) when I left it running in our bedoom and that was the lowest setting!
We have tried using the auto setting – it adjusts the fan bases on indoor air quality using a particle sensor. Ours is apparently yellow (green is good, yellow is “elevated”, and red is poor) and it changed its speed to medium. You can’t change the speed without turning “Auto” off.
It comes with a little tray and three pads onto which you can add 5-7 drops of essential.oil. You can only use oils with the supplied pads and NOT directly into the tray.

    LOOKS
it’s about the height of a tower fan, but with no separate, wider base. It is white with a silver top part. It doesn’t rotate (it doesn’t need to as the vents are all around it) and considering it’s size is relatively unobtrusive. It has a smart looking night light function.

    WHAT DOES IT DO
This air purifier claims to remove 99.97% of airborne particles and if you use the UV-C technology light it apparently kills germs viruses and bacteria.

    DOES IT WORK
Well, we don’t find that we feel as groggy in the morning – we have this running for the same time as the bedroom heater at the moment (just a couple of hours before bed). The room smells differently (not fresher, just different!) and we will save drops (lavender, eucalyptus, or tee tree oil) until we are suffering with a cold. I don’t really want my room to smell of anything unless it’s actually helping.

IS IT WORTH IT – hard to say. I’m hoping that it might help long term with my husband’s migraines. However K have no idea how much electricity this thing is burning! If it were quieter we could leave it on overnight but quite honestly it’s so loud I’m surprised it hasn’t woken my children!

Large, but does the job, noisy on the higher fan settings.
On the lowest setting, it is an acceptable low noise, higher is really unusable, unless you leave it on timer and leave the room. That could be useful to clean a new room.

Simple touch controls, the lights can be turned off for night use.
There is an ion funtion too, first time I used it I, my chest became rather congested and eyes ran.
I recommend using this in an empty room to purge it first from packing dust and general manufacturing residue, because when used the next day, it was fine.

Ran afterwards in a bedroom, pre-run for 3 hours with windows closed, the air felt fresh, used the timer so it went off an hour after sleep and everything was fine.

There is an u/v light to kill bacteria, but honestly-there’s not a call for this , it’s of dubious use and not really a practical or realistic problem. This is a fad function.

Large filter which is easy to remove. Which tested this product and claimed it was hard to remove.
    How?
It pops out easily, they must have dexterity issues or something and it only has to come out yearly.

Filter lasts about a year, not washable.
Cannot find out how much one costs yet.

Bear in mind this unit is big, about the size of a kitchen bin!
Pop it in the corner and you soon ignore it.

Overall still trying it for my 30 year respiratory allergies and Rhinitis, but in a week, I have had better sleep so far and this is a rare thing.

    I am impressed.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis air purifier is a modern, almost futuristic looking piece of equipment which sounds really nice and has lots of features. It’s not too heavy, looks great and the fact you can add essential oils is a huge plus. It suits our 18’5″x11’10” lounge (which is also attached to our 7’7″x8’11” kitchen with no door) totally fine.

    Pros:
    – Looks really great. We have a blue/white themed lounge so it fits in with our decor perfectly
    – It looks pretty easy to change the filters, you just open it at the back
    – It’s really lightweight and easy to carry/move
    – The three fan settings sound good. I have tinnitus and like the hum of the purifier, and the loudness of all three settings should suit anybody. The fan sounds powerful. We tend to have it on 1 most of the time
    – The extra features don’t add any noise
    – Does seem to work – as our kitchen has no door it seems to get rid of smoke and food odours really well. We also have a rabbit (with lots of hay) and a long haired dog and it does seem to make air fresher
    – The oil slot is a really nice addition. You get spare oil pads and you literally just add 5-7 drops of oil on the pad and it circulates an aromatherapy smell with the air too

    Cons:
    – The aromatherapy doesn’t smell very strong, or it only really smells in close proximity to the purifier
    – Quite expensive for what it is. We have an air purifier with the same features (minus the oil addition) which is half the price and also covers a larger room, so it’s worth weighing up how important the aromatherapy and modern design is to you

Would I actually buy it? —
I think as it suits our decor and actually seems to purify the air, I would definitely buy it. I’d pay the extra compared to other purifiers for the aromatherapy function, but bear in mind it isn’t super strong and you can get cheaper alternatives with less features. But personally I really like it.

    Super modern, feature-rich air purifie

WoW. I’m so very happy to have this. It’s cleaning the air in my home!

I have it in the landing and have all the bedroom doors open. I switch it on then press it to the 2 or 4 hour setting. It says it cleans 109m2 so that’s basically the whole of my upstairs. I’ve learnt from a factual program that there are more pollutants in the air indoors than outside. So whether you live in the countryside or city I think this is a must!!

I’ve not read the instructions yet. So far I’ve put it on the landing, switches it on and put it on timer. Oh yes, I’ve also put in a few drops of my Neal’s Yards essential oils into the oil tray. There is a button to press to select how powerful you want the fan to go. Slow and quiet to strong and louder. The slow and quiet setting is quiet. It’s just a slight humming noise in the background.

What I like about it is that it looks so sleek, stylish and high end. Looks sturdy and built to last. The filter and essential oil tray open easily and close securely.

My only down side is that it very narrow. If you have younger children you would have to place it somewhere where they could not knock it over. I’ve tied it to something sound it’s upper neck area so it won’t topple over as my boys go past. It’s down side in being narrow is also its plus. It takes up little space on my landing so I’m happy with its narrow dimensions.

If you can afford it I would say definitely get it. I’ve already recommend it to a friend as she want to have a healthier family home. She lives in the city.

When I first moved into a city from living in the cleaner air of the Peak District a home air filter was one of my first purchases. The HoMedics TotalClean 5 in 1 Tower Air Purifier is the latest in a 20 year succession of filters. It is the first round filter I have had; and its a weird shape for an air filter. It doesn’t fit into a nook, always stands out – and it isn’t wall mountable so you are going to lose some floor space. The round shape does mean the filters are round and air is drawn through them to a centre where a UV and ioniser try and kill off anything that gets through the filters. Air filters are rated for room size; the Tower Air Purifier is rated for over 80 square meters; which is a very big room – or in my case an open space flat. One nice side effect of running an air filter is less dust on the floor – something beneficial when you have wooden floors all over.

For a 2019 device I’m surprised it is in no way smart – lacking a remote control or app support for controlling it. The controls are a sequence of touch sensitive buttons that control the fan speed, UV light, Ioniser, run timer and a night light. Sadly you can’t control it via a smart socket either; when you power it on you need to press tej power switch to start it; which is a shame if you want to run it whilst you are out, or run it on high when you are away from home. When you turn the unit on air is suctioned in from the sides; and vents from the top. The three running fan speeds when I place the filter on my wood floors go from a noisy rattle, through to Diesel engine on a cold morning. Putting it on a a rug damped down the rattle; homedics should have engineered a better damping. At any of its fan speeds its noisier than my 5 year old sharp plasma cluster which is a real shame.

One thing It is good at is collecting dust; and the filtration system is very good – going as far as including a UV light though given it takes 10 seconds to kill bacteria with a UV light im not sure its actually good for anything in a fan. The ionising effect though will help with the ozone generating working to kill bacteria. The filteration is good with a hepa filter for the small stuff and a mesh filter for the fibres and fluff in the air. The mesh filter isn’t removable which is a real pain; you can only clean it with a vacuum cleaner; its round and the best solution was to use the upholstry brush. On my old sharp filter washing it under the shower was satisfying watching the fibres wash down the drain; and resulted in a cleaner filter. The HEPA filter needs replacing every year.

I have run the HoMedics TotalClean air filter for a week to see if I can notice a difference from my sharp; and besides the extra noise I really can’t. The mesh filter has been collecting fibres and dirt from the city air. Homedics have included something different; there is an essential oil infuser tray and a pack of oil pads to add some fragrance to your home. Running it on a rug it is a good filter; good enough my Sharp is in the recycling centre.

Works great in my bedroom, put it on before we go to bed and sleep with it on all night.
It’s not noisy and there are no annoying lights. Not waking up all blocked up.

I never thought we’d need one of these in our house, but this past year or so my husband has started to suffer from respiratory problems. I’m reductant to say “allergies” because we still don’t know the cause of his shortness of breath and wheezing. Either way, we’ve tried many different remedies including a small humidifier and a small air purifier. The opportunity to try this more sophisticated one has come at just the right time

Simple to use — plug it in, press the power button and select one of the three fan speeds. The other features include an ioniser setting, and a UV-C button, a timer and a night light. These features are also easy to use at the press of a button. A little oil tray at the back of the unit is for the addition of essential oil — simply put a few drops onto one of the little pads (three are included), and the scent will be released into the air. I find Tea Tree or eucalyptus particularly effective. We haven’t used this long enough for the filter replacement indicator to illuminate but I would think this is really handy.

I do find the unit quite noisy, certainly not the “whisper quiet” mentioned in the specs, and if it’s on full speed it drowns out the radio and television, so we keep it on its lowest setting.

We’ve been using this for about two weeks, every day, and we can detect a difference. I have to point out that we don’t have pets, are non-smokers and there are only the two of us. Our house is quite small, located in a semi-rural area with little traffic and no industry. I’m sure all these factors have an effect on air quality, however it can always be improved unless you live in a vacuum.

I have two criticisms: this unit is, apparently, easy to move from room to room, but where is the handle? There isn’t one, and as the surface is smooth and shiny it’s difficult to get a good grip, especially with arthritic fingers. The other observation is that of its actual shape: the top is slightly wider than the bottom so unless placed in a corner, or out of the way, it could easily be knocked over with just a small knock.

I am so impressed by this air purifier! We have had smaller models in the past, but they never felt as if they really cleaned the air or helped with my daughter’s asthma. However, this unit is well and truly amazing!

It is a nice larger size model but the way it has been designed makes it look very stylish and matches our home dcor very well. They have clearly put some thought into this and as a bonus it comes with so many handy and smart features.
It has HEPA filtration and a de-ionisation feature to clear the air and a UV-C button to actively kill germs and viruses.

When you turn it on it lights up but you can turn the lights off completely or even use as a night light (which my daughter loves at night in her room!). It also has a diffuser – a tray to which you can add essential oils — which I LOVE as you get the faint smell of lavender of mint wafting through the air of the room.

All the above is good and well but what made me give these 5 stars (would give more if I could) is the fact that we have seen a definite improvement in my daughter’s asthma symptoms over the last week of usage. She has been suffering from a cold and together with the rainy damp weather of late her asthma flared up. However, since we put this unit in her room and keep on at night while she sleeps, her wheeziness has improved so much! My husband who was sceptical at first about this unit, admitted he was wrong and that it is indeed a great purifier.

I would highly recommend this unit as it is such a quality product which makes it very well priced!

This air purifier is very powerful with a lot of filtration modes.
The actual air filter is very large for a good amount of airflow but can also be very quiet. There are three modes, the first mode you can easily sleep through with the other two being a bit more powerful to get more air through the filter
There is a UV-C light which helps kill off any airborne bacteria
There is also a ion button which helps remove anything airborne too
The light on the filter looks great in the dark, seems like it is from the future
overall it is a powerful air filter which keeps my room free of pollution and anything nasty which may set off my hay feve

We have this in the bedroom to help us sleep easier as we live next to woodland and the pollen is a problem. I’m also keen to remove all the fragrance that comes from domestic cleaning products and the like (so I don’t use the aroma pads in this unit!). We’ve found it very effective improving the air we sleep in, and the fact we can turn off the illumination even on the control buttons and get rid of the blue glow is lovely. It’s well built, sturdy and easy to take apart for cleaning.

The unit is noisier than I expected – even on the lowest speed there a low rumble from the motor that resonates on the floorboards, and at the higher levels its loud enough to limit quiet conversation. It really needs some feet to lift it off the floor to stop the resonant effect.

I think this will be a godsend in the high-pollen season and I’m pleased with it despite the sound levels.

Aesthetically this looks great and the circular design gives a strong impression of 360 degree air filtration. Indeed this is one of the most comprehensive air purifiers I have ever used. As I am an asthma sufferer i have used quite a few.

Big enough to fill a large room, it is packed with features and extras to do a really thorough job.

For example in addition to HEPA filtration it has a de-ionisation feature to clear the air and a UV-C button to actively kill germs and viruses.

When you turn it on it lights up like the control panel on the Star Ship Enterprise but at the touch of a botton you can either add an additional nightlight or turn every light off altogether- a handy feature if like me you use this overnight in your bedroom.

It even has a diffuser – a tray to which you can add essential oils ( not included so I have yet to try).

The fan has three speeds which you can select by presssing a button or if you select ‘auto’ the device will determine the fan speed based on the quality of the air around it.

Here lies my only criticism ; compared to my older air purifier the Total Clean seems to have a higher trigger / boost threshold meaning it never once initiated a higher fan speed the whole time I had it on when left on ‘auto’.

Now it may be that my older device is over zealous but I would rather have the assurance of it erring on the side of caution where my asthma is concerned .

You can of course up the speed manually but this is far less eco-friendly than trusting the device to do this for you.

Overall I do really like this – just that minor niggle about how sensitive it might be to the air quality around it.

We are absolutely delighted with this. There are various sizes available – this is the large size, and it offers a feature which the smaller sizes do not. It has an auto function which when activated identifies the air quality and increases and reduces the intensity of its operation as required.

This morning i thought the air felt stuffy in the room. I turned on the purifier and after a short time the control panel light indicated red – indicating poor air quality. It then speeded up, and after a while it went through amber to green indicating the air had been cleaned. The air certainly felt much cleaner. You can see the green light in the centre of the control panel in the photo i have uploaded.

The purifier deals with allergens, pollen, pet dander, odours, mould spores and germs, and leaves the air in the room feeling much cleaner. You can actually feel yourself breathing easier.

This is quite a large piece of equipment – about mid thigh high, but it is light and easy to move around. It even has a little tray with pads that you can soak in perfume or essential oil for the purifier to waft scent throughout the room.

We are really pleased with this – it is effective, stylish, and does what it says it does – and we particularly love the auto function. Really happy to recommend this purifie

    Brilliant air purifie

A very good filter for allergens as well as odours. It’s a little big but you probably would need one for larger rooms. I’d love it more if it came with the remote and was less noisy on high setting but generally, it’s good.

This model AP-T40 is wisper quiet. It has over its smaller model AP-T30 an automatic air quality mode which i really love. This alters the fans speed hence noise to an absolute wisper. On full this is loud as a hair dryer, but most rooms and locations will only require the first or middle fan speed (or automatic mode). I was amazed by the filter size and effectiveness. After half an hour I could tell the difference in the air quality in the room. This is a truly amazing unit and range from Homedics. The various options have independent buttons and it is very easy to use. This is an effective, efficient and great design, i really like the care gone into thr design of the product. The ability to quieten this to a wisper is a very useful feature as is the ability to turn off all the blue LEDs showing what options you have turned on. I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending this product. Awesome and stunning, yet effective and inexpensive filters (approx 25), which you can vacuum clean many times before replacement (filter ID is AP-T40FL). Andrew

Why have I not used this sooner? This airpurifier is well and truely amazing, it comes so many handy and smart features such as the auto feature, which assesses the air quality and adjusts the fan speed and output as necessary. I think the essential oil tray is a great touch, I’ve been using some Tisserand oil in there!

The unit itself is quite big, but I’m aware they also do smaller sizes of this. The design is incredibly smart and modern, it reminds me of something out of the Disney Wall.E film, haha! The light also looks the part!

I’ve noticed a difference in the air quality in my kitchen, and I’m happy it’s doing what it should do.

The purifier is really easy to set up, comes with instructions also.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a good air purifier, except it doesn’t come with a remote or app to control from a distance and it is very noisy, even on the lowest setting – without a night time option to dampen the sound, only a nightlight. It is small and very lightweight, so you can easily move it around to different rooms to suit your needs (maybe to outside the bedroom for use during the night).

Don’t get me wrong, in the right place, this will help with hay fever symptoms, asthma and allergies, as well as reducing the potential for germs, viruses and bacterial build up if you use the UV-C option. But the fact is that it sounds as though someone is running a car engine just outside the room, so it really won’t be of much use in a bedroom unless noise doesn’t bother you at all. I have no trouble sleeping normally, but the noise from this would bother me. So that puts the kibosh on using this for asthma and hay fever relief at night – the prime time for problems here.

In a lounge, it would prevent you hearing the TV very well and would also not be a welcome accompaniment to a chat with friends. It is probably best placed in a hallway or on a landing where it will have an impact on a large communal area and where it’s noise will be less intrusive, but for me it is less effective if you cannot place it in a room where you spend more time.

I like the fact you can put essential oils on a pad inside, but again this is too noisy for relaxation, so I am not sure how much use it would get.

I have it set to auto mode, which means the fan speed will automatically change with air conditions. In this mode, you cannot control the fan speed but can choose to engage the UV-C, ioniser and night light. There is a timer option so you could select this to run whilst you are out of the room.

It feels effective in terms of throughput of air and we noticed an easing of asthma symptoms (wrong time of year for hay fever), so it is worth thinking about if you are very noise tolerant or just want a purifier to go in a hallway or kitchen. It will be too loud for most people to have running at night in a bedroom, however.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersThis Homedics AP-T40 Air Purifier comes ready to go out of the box — the filter is already fitted and unpacked. The supplied instruction manual is well written and illustrated plus, it includes details of the three-year warranty.

This is an impressive air purifier which stands about 83cm high with a diameter of 26cm, so you can’t miss it, but it looks really tasteful and will blend into most decors. The unit is very stable and the mains power cord is generous.

I like the facilities on this air purifier which are very comprehensive — it has three fan speeds; a UV-C lamp to destroy kill germs and viruses etc; an auto mode which adjusts throughput according to the air quality; an ioniser; night light and timer with settings for 4, 8 or 12 hours which you can switch off too.

I already own a couple of smaller air purifiers and the most striking thing about this model is the volume of throughput if you require it, on high speed, it really shifts a large volume of air. The noise level on the lowest setting is quite low and certainly suitable for sleeping whilst the sound does increase proportionately on levels 2 and 3 which are a bit noisier. The auto mode is really handy as it features an LED which glows green for good air quality, yellow for elevated and red for poor plus, it adjusts the fan speed to suit the conditions detected — arguably, you could leave it on this setting all the time.

It’s hard to tell how well the UV-C light feature works (and other than the indicator light when it is on – you can’t see any light) but it’s a handy feature if you assume it does what it claims and that’s to kill germs, viruses and bacteria. You can also replace the bulb. Using the ioniser really does seem to freshen the air but it also attracts a bit of dust build-up on the device. I’d be cautious about putting the unit with the ioniser on too near delicate wall surfaces in case of staining with long term use, I say this based on past experience of ionisers.

The nightlight is nice and looks good during the day too but I suspect many will want to turn it off when going to sleep. The filter is easily installed via a door in the back and supplies are readily available at a decent price — the need to change the filter is signalled by a small indicator lamp near the power button and the lifespan depends on lots of factors including the local environment.

A novel feature on this device is a small tray which comes out to accept a pad (3 are supplied) which can be soaked in essential oil to fragrance the air — this feature doesn’t have to be used but does work quite well, I tried it with Sandalwood oil. You can purchase replacement oil trays and pads.

The performance of this air purifier is convincing and the air really does feel fresher and less dusty. Certainly, I’ve slept much better since using this unit plus it has a number of useful additional features but the most important add on is the automatic mode — it’s a real asset and a feature I’ll be looking for when purchasing this type of product in the future. I really like this air purifier which has plenty of “muscle” and it feels as though it makes a real difference.

Effective and plenty of useful features

With allergies to dust mites and dog dander, as well as hay fever at various times of year, having a large German Shepherd / Alaskan Malamute cross, thick carpets, and living in a semi-rural location probably isn’t completely wise. However, sometimes we just have to do things that aren’t completely logical. Thankfully, air purifiers can make life much more comfortable. We already have one from a different manufacturer, which I have been using in my home office. However, another one in the bedroom would also be very useful, hence trying this one.

Having read the instructions, I powered up this HoMedics air purifier. It’s fairly noisy and has no night setting for the fan, unlike my existing air purifier. So, a quick change of plan. The HoMedics one is now in my home office and my existing air purifier is now in the bedroom. That works well on another front — the HoMedics one is significantly smaller, which is useful in my overcrowded office.

I like that this HoMedics one contains carbon odour filtration which helps get rid of food and dog smells. The UV-C technology (which can be turned on and off) is useful too, hopefully killing off microorganisms. Optional ionisation is handy, although whether I use it depends on quite where I have the air purifier, as I don’t want the ionisation on when I have computer equipment very nearby.

The fan has three operating speeds. It would have been good to have a night setting, that runs slower and quieter than the slowest of the three, but that’s not available unfortunately (the slowest setting is still quite noisy).

There are a few warnings. As the ioniser can generate a small amount of ozone, care has to be taken to keep birds and small pets away. The instruction to “use the ioniser feature in a well-ventilated area” is a bit of a copout — in a well-ventilated area the air purifier will be ineffective. It works best in a room with doors and windows closed, not in a well-ventilated area. Similarly, there is a tray that essential oils can be put in. That’s a no-no for me, as dogs (and other pets) can be adversely affected by essential oils. Again, the instructions say to “diffuse in a well-ventilated area and leave an option for them to remove themselves from the space, such as leaving a door open”. As before, air purifiers work best in rooms that aren’t well-ventilated, so that’s another copout.

As for moving the unit, thankfully it is light as there are no handles. The closest things to handles are a couple of small insets at the top of the filter cover, but they are only big enough for a couple of fingers each.

However, despite the warnings and caveats, this seems to be a very effective air purifier, suitable for most rooms, but possibly too noisy for bedrooms. Recommended.

On paper i am the perfect candidate for this purifier. I suffer from Hayfever to the point where i am on prescription medication, i live with a Huskamute who sheds hair daily covering pretty much every surface of my house, and to top it all off i live in the countryside surrounded by 7 farms and about 1000 acres of rapeseed, wheat, corn, cows, pigs, goats, chickens, sheep and horses. Not to mention all the manure.

This was easy to get up and running and it doesn’t take up too much space. Dimensions are: L: 25.7cm x W: 25.7cm X H: 64.3cm.

I have it next to the tv on my chest of drawers in my bedroom. Its relatively quiet, but not silent, the top speed setting drove me nuts and i couldn’t stand it, it was like trying to sleep with a vacuum cleaner on, same for the 2nd setting too, but the lowest one i can just about tolerate although it took me around 3 weeks to get used to it because its pin drop quiet where i live, and so there is no ambient noise to soak it up. This probably wouldnt be an issue for most peope because with kids in the house you wouldnt even hear this at all.

What i found very interesting is that upon checking the filter after using this for 3 weeks there was not a thing on it, no pet hair or dust particles of any kind, i would have expected something to be on it, but maybe it will be different a few months down the line.

I love the fact that you can use essential oils. I use them already in a humidifier, Lemongrass is a particular favourite as it makes everything smell completely fresh and amazing.

Replacement parts are very cheap compared to other models i have had. Replacement Oil Tray is 6.99. Replacement oil pads 6.99 for a pack of 3, and the Hepa Filter is only 24.99 and only needs to change once a year. Thats fantastic value, and i applaud the manufacturer for not ripping off consumers on spare parts.

Overall a solid and impressive 5 stars.

This fantastic machine, cleans the air, pollutants and filters no less than five ways to help people like me that have Asthma and yet we have pets. It also has the ability to circulate essential oils through the nifty oil pads but as the instructions do warn that the smells are impossible to quickly dispel if my cats or dog don’t like them it’s not a facility that I’ve tried yet. At low speed the fan is unobtrusive and you could sleep through, the blue light although very fetching and space age isn’t something that I could get past in the bedroom, my cats are absolutely intrigued by it.

Looks like R2D2 from Star Wars but this is a perfect aid for clean air.

I have a number of HoMedics products so was more than happy to give this air purifier a try. It’s not too large to be cumbersome or in the way in the room. Upon first use, I left it running for the whole day on our bedroom, with the door shut. Upon returning home and entering the bedroom, the air inside really did fell clean and pure to breathe in.

The only real issue I have with it is that mine is not the quietest of things when in use. It’s not loud, just a little invasive, especially in the bedroom. There is no way we could leave it running through the night.

That said, there is a handy feature that allows you to switch off the bright blue lights on the control buttons when in use.

Overall ,I like it a lot. It’s just a pity that it’s a little on the noisy side.

I have had nine air purifiers in the past and this is one of the easiest one to use and programs of them all.

It can clean the air 4.8 times an hour in a 17.2 sqm room. The machine is capable of removing odours, VOC’s, allergens and withe the UV-C light also kills germs bacteria and viruses.
There is also an oil tray from which you can use essential oils, which are put on to a pad and placed into the tray. This is not a function I would use though.

The outer case is made from very good quality plastic which does not outgas at all. It is very easy to open and access the filter which is cylindrical and easy to remove. The filter is also very light.
One criticism I have though is that there are no specific insets to hold when moving the machine, the indents for removing the filter cover are not sufficient, in my opinion to pick the filter up without having to feel you might drop it until you can support the machine by holding it’s base.

This is not a silent machine. On fan setting one it is quiet. The fan settings two and three are not, I would put them on and leave the room while they work and then turn the setting down to one. I do not want to be in the same room whilst setting two or three are on. It is very easy to select fan speeds, functions and the time settings from which you have the choice of 2-4-8 or 12 hours.
It’s necessary to vacuum the outerside of the HEPA filter once a month and the UV-C bulb is accessed under the HEPA filter, easy to access and from my experience of changing these bulbs before will be an easy thing to do.

In my home I couldn’t reach a sock to plug the machine on but I used a an extension cord with no problems and I had the machine on for 3 hours continuously.

I have had this Air Purifier plugged in for the past week since it arrived, and so far so good! The unit is very quiet. My daughter said she doesn’t feel like the air is as heavy to breathe as before and my son is breathing easier too. I bought a different model of Homedics air purifier last year to help with family allergies which was shared between the bedrooms but as it was so good really wanted another one for the lounge.

This newer model is also fantastic. It is quiet, especially at the lower fan speeds (there are three settings).

We all tend to suffer with hay fever, but this year has been especially bad for my husband and son and now we are moving into the fungal spores time of year their noses and eyes have been affected really badly. Even in the 72 hours we have been using the new air purifier it has made a vast amount of difference to them.

This Homedics model deals with not just the standard airborne allergens such as pollen/spores etc. it also deals with dust and pet dander along with a lot more (really useful for our ageing dog who is dropping a lot more hair and dander now he’s getting on) and the filter neutralises odours as well. It also has an optional ioniser.

A new addition with this model is the tray to add essential oils to (of which there are pads supplied to use for your choice of oils) of which we haven’t yet used, but we will do.
There’s an auto timer function, enabling you to get it to switch off after a set number of hours.

I love the fact that these HEPA filters are so well made they should only need replacing once a year, (but it would depend as to how many pollutants the purifier was getting rid of). The night mode is also useful if you are using it in a bedroom.

The only issue we had (and nothing to do with the machine) was that the Hernes delivery man had to apologise that the box was soaked as another parcel had leaked in the van. This was some kind of vinegar judging by the smell and it was a good job this wasn’t for a gift as the box was soaked through (even down inside the internal packing) and we had to get rid of it straight away because of the strong smell. Luckily the machine was in plastic wrapping inside and was completely fine.

I cannot rate these purifiers highly enough. They really are worth their weight in gold and make such a difference with feeling better in your own home if you’re one if many that struggle with allergies. I would reccomend this to everyone.

Worth its weight in gold. Fantastic!

Used this for pollen filtering; seems to work well for hayfever as it eases the symptoms of pollen related allergies. Can’t comment on filtering other things but for hayfever sufferers seems to work well. Easy to operate and doesn’t make a lot of noise.

We are very happy with this super air purifier. It is very easy to use straight out of the box and we could feel the improvement in air quality very quickly. The system which enables the removal of bacteria, smells, and pet dander, also allows a gentle diffusion of pleasant fragrance through a clever little tray with a pad to soak in essential oil.

The lighting is controllable to turn on or off at night as you wish, and there are 3 fan speeds – the fastest speed, which purifies the air fastest, is very quiet – the lowest speed setting is almost silent.

This is an excellent purifier. We already owned a purifier which was a rather cheaper one than this. This one is much more effective, quieter and looks fantastic. It is also light to move around easily. The stuffy feeling in our flat has been removed in minutes since we switched this on. Very happy!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is my third attempt at finding a decent air purifier, the first was cheap, effective but only in small spaces. The seconds was an expensive mistake -no one liked it.

This device looks great, in a high tech smooth modular way, reasonably quiet on the first 2 settings. Most importantly it actually really works.

On a very bad day, very high pollen count stuffy hot day my eyes were itching coughing sore throat starting up – full blow hay fever symptoms on their way. I put this in the centre of the room full power with the uv-c option on, sitting next to it I could tell the difference with every breath. It also cooled the air that was circulating through it initially as I had just brought it in from cold room. An hour later – the whole area was just perfect, had a couple of doors open to a corridor and adjacent rooms but the area it cleaned up spread quite some distance. Very happy.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is about the size of a waste bin. It isn’t obnoxiously industrial or hospital looking in white and silver with blue LEDs. It also works straight out of the box once you have all the packaging out. You can switch the LED lighting off, and you have pretty much total control over which settings to have switched on as they all work pretty much independently. The air filtration is the best part of this as on high pollen days even my antihistamines stop working. I sit this near me and run it and it does ease the allergic reactions. It’s also compact and light enough for me to move it from room to room as I need it – living room, office and bedroom – without it being a monumental chore. The diffuser is pleasant and not overpowering. Just a gentle note of essential oil that lasts well. It doesn’t use a lot of power either, and cools well enough close to me that I didn’t need a second fan going to sleep in the recent very hot weather. This has been fantastic for relief of my allergies.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersAfter looking around I opted for this as I saw the manufacturer sold products in Argos and Curry’s, so knew it wouldn’t be a cheaper foreign product. This is a well made quality looking item and works very well. It has a handy timer and 3 different settings. I think its effectiveness will depend on different circumstances, but for us, after a few nights of it running we started to notice a difference in my son’s allergies. He used to wake up sneezing with a runny nose, this never happens now. I’d recommend this for someone looking for a purifier for dust allergies and hayfever for a small room.

This is large, standing the same height as my coffee table, but it is effective. Plug in, turn on. If you wish, there is a draw in which there is a pad – add a few drops of a scent to that draw, and it ensures that the air has that scent for hours. I used lavender, which would be particularly effective if trying to sleep. You can set it to have an illuminated blue light, or not, and it can be set to remove ions from the atmosphere in the room. There is also a timer, to enable auto turn off.

This is effective, although the carbon filters would need to be replaced periodically for continued use. It is particularly useful if there are a number of bodies in a small room – however, with that, there is also the aspect of the space it takes up.

I also suffer with allergies and have noticed that they are so much better since using the air purifier. Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI already have a larger version of this machine, and I was initially dubious as to what effect it would actually have on the air quality in my bedroom. I have been surprised by both versions. The air is fresher, and actually feels clean – I also find it cools the air down and functions as an air conditioner in effect. If you run it for a couple of weeks and examine the filters you’ll be very surprised at what it’s scrubbed. I don’t find the noise a problem as it is well within the range of the acceptable. Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve put this air purifier in my kitchen-dinning room, for some reason even when cooking with an extractor fan, some food smells tended to linger downstairs into the next day/afternoon. So having used this for a while, I can say that it helped to eliminate food smells noticeably quicker. I would leave this on overnight with the doors closed and find that most of the smell was gone by the morning. It’s worth nothing that this air purifier is only suitable for a medium sized room, and does not filter the whole house. On the lowest setting it’s fairly quiet, on the medium and strongest setting, the noise is noticeable when the doors to the room are open. The unit has a UV setting to kill airborne viruses and bacteria and helps to remove allergens, which is great for hay fever sufferers in the summer. The UV function might come in handy during winter when colds and flu bugs are about. It comes with 3 foam pads so you can filtrate air with essential oils. The buttons are touch sensitive and backlit with blue lights, you have the option to turn off the lighting. The filter itself is easy to access and change. It needs changing on average every 12 months, but the unit has an indicator light to indicate when it does need replacing. The air purifier also comes with timer options as well. I would liken the size of the unit to a small waste paper bin, so it would fit quite nicely in the corner of a room.

This is quiet enough to use in the bedroom overnight and undoubtedly had a positive effect on my sisters asthma when it comes to pet hair etc in the bedroom. I personally don’t have a need for such devices but if you do then I’m sure it is worthwhile as we have used them in the past and what they remove is evident in the filter. This particular model is quite sleek and can easily be hidden away behind furniture if you don’t want it to be seen. It’s easy to operate and surprisingly quiet. Only used for a short time so far but seems to do its job. Four stars.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis air purifier works well. I have hay fever and my daughter has asthma and we have both used it and we’ve found that it does help alleviate symptoms.

The Homedics is quite compact, and does not take up too much room. It comes with three pads for fragrancing the air with essential oils, if you so wish, but we didn’t use that. The purifier kills germs using UV light and also ionises the air particles – not entirely sure what effect that has, but the filter seemed to work well. The big filter in the middle of the machine looks to be of several different layers, and according to the manual it should be replaced every 12 months. The Homedics website sells the filter for 20 with free delivery, so it is very reasonably priced.

The machine comes with a nightlight on it, which you can turn off, and you can also choose to have the buttons lit or unlit. The noise level is comparable to some other brands of air purifier which I have used in the past, it just sounds like a quiet fan but is definitely very noticeable if you are sensitive to noise when you are in bed (although my son uses his purifier as a white noise machine too to help him sleep). The fan has three adjustable speeds, so obviously the higher the speed the louder it gets.

I like this air purifier, it works well and is good value, and is compact enough even for a small bedroom.

    Works well

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis is undoubtedly an impressive piece of kit. It looks smart and futuristic, and I particularly like the touch-sensitive control panel.

Another plus for me is that when the unit is switched on one or more blue lights illuminate on the control panel. But if you don’t want this at night you can use the relevant button to switch them off (while still leaving the unit running). On the flip side of the coin, you can also turn on the ‘night-light’ feature, in which a blue band lights up around the neck of the unit.

There are three speed settings. Most of the time I use the lowest, which I find perfectly adequate for my bedroom (and also the quietest – see below). I have definitely noticed that I am less congested overnight and sleeping better, which I assume is due to the dust and pollen in the room being filtered out.

There is also an optional ioniser function. I think this is best used for an hour or two before going to bed and switched off before retiring. Leaving it on all night probably wouldn’t do any harm, but I definitely notice a difference in the air when it is left on for an extended period.

The product also includes UV-C technology, which you can turn on or off via the control panel. This allegedly kills bacteria and viruses in the air ‘by penetrating their DNA’. I am not totally convinced by this rather grand claim and haven’t tried it myself, but the option is there if you want it.

A timer function lets you set a period for the unit to run, from 2 hours up to 12. If you don’t activate the timer, of course, it operates continuously until turned off.

Finally, you can diffuse essential oils into the air using one of the three pads provided. You insert these into the device via a tray near the top. You have to provide your own essential oils and use just a few drops. I haven’t tried this myself, as it’s not what I wanted this product for and seems slightly contrary to the purpose of an air filter. Again, though, the option is there if you want it.

My one slight reservation is that even on the lowest speed setting I wouldn’t describe this device as ‘whisper quiet’. It is actually a bit noisier than my old air filter, and if you have it on at night you will definitely notice the sound it makes. Personally I don’t mind this as it helps block out noise from the street outside, but if you are expecting something almost silent you may be disappointed.

As I say, though, the noise level isn’t really an issue for me, so I am happy to award this product a full five stars.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis has been a big success in my home office (about the size of a double bedroom), where I work most days. Out of the box, it looks like a very large AA battery. It has a neat white design, some very nice illuminated light-touch controls, and is much easier to use than I was expecting.

So, you do you use it? You plug it in and switch on. There’s a little tray with a pad on which you can put essential oil to give the room an aroma. That’s easy enough to do, and you get three pads in the box, giving you the chance to use three different oils. Apart from ON/OFF. There are five buttons controlling all the features. For airflow, just press the airflow button to cycle though the three speeds. The same works for the timer, which enables you to run the device for a limited time.

It is quiet in use. The noise is a very faint hum, and the sound of air blowing. It takes in air through the sides, and blows it out from the top. For all-day use in a small office like mine, low speed is fine. I keep it running all day, with all features switched on. The air quality is definitely better. By the end of the working day, I find the air is as fresh as it was at the start — not at all stuffy or humid. I also noticed a distinct lack of dust in the air.

This model supersedes the 2018 model, which is still available on amazon at 229.99 (May 2019). I have no price for this new model at time of writing, but given the improved performance I’d expect the price to be a bit higher.

I test hundreds of products every year. I find many gadgets are novel but fall out of use very quickly. This is a gadget that I would never have considered buying, mainly because I didn’t know they existed. Having had the opportunity to try it, I am really impressed with it. Being able to breathe air in my office that is as fresh and dust-free (and bug free) at 5pm as it was at 9am, is a big plus for me, especially as I haven’t got air con. The price is a bit steep but it is not bad considering what it does.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a versatile air purifier which can perform a variety of functions as the listing shows, although don’t expect it to all of those at the same time – and in practice if you’re considering this it is probably mainly only for one of those functions. It can handle a reasonably good sized room (up to 15 square metres) yet is quite compact and takes up very little space, its cylindrical shape making it particularly easy to place.

In use on the low settings it is very quiet, the noise level is unobtrusive, but on the highest setting it is very noticable. It seems to do the job, my hay fever symptoms are less apparent with its use, although it’s hard to know if this is the reason in the short time I’ve been using it.

The unit is quite light in weight and easy to move around, although it would be a lot easier if it had a carry handle of some sort. The filter is very easy to remove, and it is recommended it be replaced every 12 months with normal use, there is an indicator to show when this needs to be done. It is also recommend cleaning the filter with a vacuum cleaner once a month.

For its size, this air purifier is surprisingly effective. One of our children suffers from a dust allergy and we’ve previously had a large purifier in their room to help remove dust and pollen, etc, but this is quite noisy and expensive to run.

This small HoMedics purifier is easy to use, especially with the sleep-timer where you can set how long it runs for before automatically turning off. It’s pretty quiet, and there’s been no noticeable change in the quality of the air since switching to this purifier from our old one (as evidenced by our son remaining relatively symptom-free in his room at night). We haven’t had to replace the filter yet, but this looks quite easy, so hopefully this will work smoothly when we have to change it. We’re pretty pleased with this; four stars.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe price on this product seems to be shooting about, but for around 80 quid I would be happy to recommend it. It has 3 speeds and you can toggle the blue led lights on and off. The filters seem good and should last a year if you give them a vacuum once a month. They are easy to get in and out. On the lowest setting it runs quietly enough to be in the room while you sleep. It is quite compact and the style will enable you to put it in a corner (well not right in the corner – or it won’t work so well). The cleansed aite comes out the top. It comes with 3 pads on which you can add essential oils if you want to make your room smell. I haven’t tried that.

As to whether it works – well hard to tell. It is ionising as well as trapping pollen and killing bugs, so psychologically te air feels cleaner and so far my hay fever hasn’t cut in – so I think this is definitly worth a go.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI really like this Air Purifier from HoMedics. Its not so big that it hogs the room but big enough to cope with freshening up a medium sized bedroom. It’s a nice looking device too for a change. The buttons are illuminated in an electric blue colour. It also has a nightlight feature which is basically a blue ring of light that surrounds the unit. The illumination has 3 settings. Buttons only / Buttons and nightlight / All lights off.

In use I find that fan setting 1 (of 3) is perfectly adequate and not too noisy at all. Level 2 & level 3 are progressivley louder though and perhaps not conducive to a good nights sleep if placed in a bedroom.

There is a handy little pull out tray into which you can place essential oil (extra oil pads are supplied in the package but no oil). I haven’t tried this feature yet but I do like the idea so will be investing in some nice essential oil fragrances.

For everyday use, I leave the UV-C light switched on as it kills germs, bacteria & viruses. The advert suggests that it also removes mold spores but there is no mention of this in the packaging or instructions it comes with.

Overall I think it is excellent. It really does leave the room feeling clean and smelling fresh.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is clearly a high-quality product. It feels very well built, and though hardly decorative, looks good in its own way, Check the dimensions though because it’s probably larger than you expect.

I like the touch panel for the controls. You use it to set the power of the fan, the ‘sleep’ timer (2, 4, 8 or 12 hours), and separately switch on the purple ‘nightlight’, UV filter and ionization function (which can affect pets, so keep away from your budgie). As far as I can see you can’t use an external plug timer to switch the unit on since it doesn’t remember the setting status when you unplug it.

The main replaceable filter is large and behind a big door on the front. The booklet says you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove some dust build up but when the warning light comes on you’re supposed to replace the filter. There’s also a small pop-out tray where you can put fragrance pads, and there are a few pads included but no essential oils, which is what you use on them. Using one seems to me to negate the idea of a purifier, but I suppose it’s a nice feature if you like that sort of thing. I didn’t try this.

The fan has three settings. I can sleep quite happily with it on the lowest setting, but I don’t think it’s especially quiet and I think some people may not like it in their bedroom for instance. On the highest setting it’s annoyingly loud so best used in a room you’re not in. You couldn’t watch TV with it on.

A drawback of any air purifier is that you have to close off the room you use it in. If you open the door it will allow air from elsewhere to ‘dilute’ your purified air. This seems like quite a serious limitation. It’s a bit like having the air-conditioning on in your car with the windows open.

I’m not particularly allergic to anything in particular, so perhaps that’s why I haven’t noticed any change after using this in my bedroom for a few days. The air doesn’t feel or smell any different to me and I haven’t noticed a change in my breathing. But with this sort of device you may have to take a leap of faith and try it out. If it helps an allergy or makes you sleep better, it will be worth the compromises, which are the size, the noise, and the expense of new filters, which you should check out before buying.

But if you’re convinced you need one, this is certainly a very nice unit that does everything it says except (in my case at least) make much discernible difference to how the air in my house feels to breathe. Your mileage, as they say, may vary.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is a really good product – well made, well designed and reasonably priced.
Set up is very simple – literally just unpack and turn it on. It’s not the quietest purifier I have used, but it’s not too loud either even on the highest fan speed. It just sits in the corner, cleaning the air effectively and easily. Air is sucked into the unit and expelled through the filter, getting rid of pollen, allergens and other nasty things you breathe in without noticing.
There are three fan speeds, easily selected by the control panel. Two features I really like are the ability to add essential oils to supplied foam pads. This adds a scent of your choice to the expelled air and really freshens the air. Note there is no scented oil included, although you do get two replacement pads. I also love the night light feature which lights a strip on the unit up in a cool blue colour.
You can spend hundreds on these units, some come with app control and WiFi connectivity, which is great but really bumps the price up. This unit is very effective, has some great features and is good value. I’d highly recommend i

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI was not sure what to expect size-wise so slightly surprised at the size of this device – I was sort of expecting something possibly the size of a litre bottle in theory but its bigger than that, possibly bigger than a two litre bottle – but having said that, it’s got some wonderful features such as a three speed (almost silent) fan plus a Night Mode that allows you to turn off the display lights (they are not that bright anyway) for use as implied during the night, plus removable filters that – it states – last five times longer but this of course is down to how you use this device and your environment. It’s also got indicators to tell you when these filters need changing – very handy — but in use it runs in the background and we have tried it on all settings and its not ‘overpowering’ as you don’t really hear it as it is quiet. It’s possible to add aromatic oils as well although we have yet to try this feature but with a large but lovable dog in the household, it seems to be working okay so far with a noticeable improvement. Overall it’s a well designed product that in the time we have been using it has been working well — got rid of some nasty smells from a relation who smokes some odd mixture in his pipe who popped in to visit, with the smoke or ‘aroma’ that used to linger a bit after he had gone, but this device really surprised us as it dealt with that in a short space of time!. Its a nice well designed, good looking device that blends in quite well but importantly, it works well and we are quite impressed with its performance so far plus its rated low energy at 37 watts electrical power, so it economical to run as well. 5 Stars
