Not quite sure how I got along for so long without this! I’m very allergic to grass and tree pollen and struggle to sleep in the high pollen seasons, the air purifier helps to create a safe space free from allergens (provided you enclose the room – doors and windows shut!). It does make a noise but it’s consistent – I can sleep with it on low but usually just put it on high for a couple of hours before bed then turn it off.

Does the job. A bit noisy at any higher air flow than minimal. I dont think it’s worth to pay the full price for this item.

This is my second one i buy. Do not get a smaller version, or the noise level will be too high. This one is a good size, i use it most of the time at minimal level, and it works most part of the day. I only push it higher when i have a reason to think that there is a lot of clean i the air (like after changing the linen -> dust mite.. etc). It greatly improve our breathing (dust mite, tree and grass allergy). it is just great, it does its jobs.

I was once ( like maybe everyone) looking at the reviews checking out the options as to air purifiers, I can say setting one is very quiet, the normal fan (table top) I used was louder then this filter on setting 1 … your sure to hear the sound of the air moving as it passes through the filters but that’s expected

The smell of plastic is there but I’ll update this review in the coming months as to its progress, as I’ve been told by homedics it will fad away after a few weeks

It’s too early to said how it’s really doing but on the 1st night it’s much better then having a fan blow crap (ie dust ) around the room, I did have a normal fan and have to clean the fan blades (monthly) so that’s not a issue now as it’s all being collected in the filters

Will post back update in few months

Straight out of the box it smells very strongly of plastic, the smell goes after a couple of days though. On the highest setting it’s incredibly loud but the lowest setting is quiet enough to sleep through. Seems to work well as our allergies are much better!

    Pros:
    – easy set-up
    – three fan speeds
    – timers so you can leave it running for a predetermined time period
    – air feels fresher, and I think it has helped with dust and pollen allergies
    – looks nice, and sits neatly in the corner of my bedroom

    Cons:
    – if you are sensitive to noise it is a little too loud to run while sleeping, even with the LEDs on it off.
    – there is a slight smell to the air (if you are familiar with air purifiers or humidifiers it seems to be the same slightly disinfectant smell from them all). This doesn’t really bother me, but again be aware if you are sensitive to smells.

    Notes
    – it is designed to purify a whole room so is a reasonable size, make sure you have measured it before buying

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIt seems a bit mean to withhold a star from this excellent gadget, but I can’t quite get rid of a creeping feeling that I don’t really understand what it’s intended to do. Saying that, it does provide your room with liberal amounts of fresh air with any sense of dust or even damp filtered out. A fringe benefit is that it also seems to act as a basic air conditioning unit, blasting cool air upwards which is very welcoming in the current weather. It’s easy to use and well-designed, and if you had some sort of allergy it would be very useful. I’ve never really thought of my air quality before, but has focused my attention. Read the information on the product page really carefully, and make sure this item answers your needs.

This is a big machine. Stylish but big – it’s approximately 57 cm tall by 57 cm wide. I mention that as it may be relevant if you are placing it in a small room.

Having said that, you need a large size to give you the power and the high surface area needed to filter a large volume of air — a small machine will be no good.

The room smells better now — this air purifier certainly appears to be doing its job.

  18. Anonymous says:

Big, powerful and with plenty of filter. This unit will do a fair sized room with ease. I am a convert to dust filters, they help my allergies throughout the year and I sleep and breathe better.

Firstly, this is big, huge big. You get an internal hepa filter and a charcoal outer. The Hepa needs to be replaced at least yearly, the charcoal needs a good Hoover every few weeks. On the lowest setting it is quiet and unobtrusive. You can even turn off the led lights. On the top setting it sounds like a jet taking off, I wouldn’t use it on this unless I was decorating or making lots of dust.

Is it worth the price? I would say sort of. For that kind of money there are other (smaller) options to consider. However if you have a big room and lots of space to put this, it will do you proud.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersBig time hay fever sufferer, and it’s recently kicked in with the recent warm weather. Wanted to wait before reviewing this.

I guess the big question is, did it work for me? Yes it did. I left it on overnight, on it’s lowest setting, in night mode (no lights), and whilst there was a subtle whirr, it didn’t keep me away, I got a good night sleep, and felt significantly better in the mornings. I stopped using this after a week, and noticed the symptoms back again, for me, I defiantly noticed a difference.

The unit itself, it’s quite large, but then anything that filters a room isn’t going to be small. It’s not overly large, I felt the size to be acceptable for what it does. It’s light and easy to move around, and the controls are easy enough to use. Comes with a timer, 2h, 4h, 8hr, 12hr.

If you have allergies, I would recommend this, it ticks most boxes. Replacement HEPA filter is about 20 and needs to be replaced every 12 months, the carbon filter, every 3 months and costs about 7. The unit will tell you when the filters need replacement.

    Power Usage:

    35w (fan low speed)
    45w (fan medium speed)
    65w (fan high speed)

Firstly it’s worth stating that in terms of size, this thing is a beast. It stands about knee height and is a similar size to a portable radiator, so you’ll need to bear that in mind when planning where you store it.

In terms of operation, this purifier has 3 fan speeds – the lowest is on par with typical hotel air conditioning for both air flow and noise. The other 2 settings have a bit more oomph. I usually sleep with a fan in my room for the noise (I have a bot of tinnitus so it helps), and this device makes a great alternative, particularly as the lowest fan speed is not going to be too cold compared to a normal fan. This is in part because the air is blown out at an upwards 45 degree angle.

When using, pressing the on button a second time activates Night Mode which just means that none of the lights are on, which is great if you want it on in your bedroom at night. There are also some timer options so that the machine shuts off after 2/4/8 or 12 hours.
I inspected the front panel closely in the morning light and could see dust particles getting sucked in, so that’s good to know that it does what it’s supposed to. We also tried placing it in a bathroom that has a weird, damp smell for a couple of hours and did find it noticeably improved things.

All in all very happy with this. We now sleep with it on every night in our bedroom, and find the air feels cleaner and less dusty.

Fair enough I have to admit that this is definitely an odd product to review!
First of all it has to be said that this is a BIG bit of kit…Bigger than I thought it would be!
It seems to work fine,I say seems as there is nothing to see and then I thought of checking the HEPA filter, As the advertising states ” Remove up to 99.97 percent of the contaminants in the air” (.97? thats very specific!) after a couple of weeks of mostly daily use, I decided to have a look at the filter, and lo and behold there was a fair amount of dust and detritus inside it.
So, on the whole, this is a pretty effective Air purifier at a not insignificant price.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis machine is described as a airpurifier and this is how I review it. I’ve had the machine for a number of weeks now and can say that it seems to do what it says on the box. It has two filters one being a carbon one and the other I presume for general houselhold dust etc.. The carbon one does and will reduce smells within the house as long as the doors are kept closed. Made for a particular sized room or thereabouts it works well. We have a dog and a number of people have commented that the general doggy smell usually in the house was not there. When it arrives you have to install the filters, Couldn’t be easier, the back slips off and one filter fits into is own bay and the other hangs on two hooks, Then replace the back panel. Although you can hear the fan it is very quiet.
My other half has mild breathing problems and these are not as obvious as usual. This could also be the summer coming in or machine or both?
The extra bonus is that you have 3 speeds and a timer with lights to indicate when to change the filters, a light for each one. If you have a warm room this will cool it down slightly but it is not a cooler. All in all an easy to use machine and should last for a long time.
You can choose the length of time to let it run and if used at night you can run it without lights.
I found that it was extremely easy to use and for once the instructions were extremely easy to read and understand.
    Well made as well.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our Users[UPDATE 8 October 2018: The unit developed a whirr and rattle after running near constantly for 6 weeks or so. Then after a few months it died completely. Homedics Customer Service were great and arranged courier return over email with me. I had to source a large (but not too large) sturdy box but the return courier was free and had a drop off point at our local Halfords so easy to do outside of work hours. They dispatched a new replacement unit very quickly upon receipt of the faulty one and it’s been great.

I’ve also purchased a second one so I have one in the lounge and one in the bedroom. I ordered a competitor brand tower with a supposedly quieter operation and larger air flow and very good reviews. I found comparing them that thus Homedics is far superior in terms of filtration and air flow on quietest setting. So I am sticking with Homedics!]

[UPDATE 5 July 2018: This has developed more noise even on the lowest setting since we first got it. Not awful but a whirr and rattle in with the whoosh of air. Also Homedics have changed the price of the carbon filters to 7 pounds each direct from their site. Which is not great value!
I’ve also found out that this model’s air flow is 72 m/hour.]

We’ve been using the air purifier for a few weeks now and I can feel it’s making a difference. We run it overnight in the bedroom while we sleep and for me I am definately less snuffly in the mornings. Indeed most mornings I’m not aware of any sinus problems. We forgot to switch it on last night and I had trouble this morning feeling bunged up and irritated. It’s even been effective with our windows on ventilation though you must expect more pollen etc with windows open.

Whilst it is not whisper quiet it’s not particularly noisy on the lowest setting. It’s what you’d expect from a fan running and the main noise is the whoosh of air. With use it did develop an infrequent additional noise but the kind we can’t quite put our finger on. The sort when you have to stop, hold your breath and listen for. So not all that intrusive (and I am very quite noise sensitive compared to many people).

It’s very easy to operate. I love that with a second press of the power button it turns off the lights on the unit and we use this feature in the bedroom at night. The buttons when lit are really bright which is great for when it’s bright as you can see what’s going on. The 3 speeds is a bonus though top speed is too noisy for me to sit with it would be great for clearing a room in advance of using it. It also lives up to it’s larger room capacity even at the lowest speed and feels suitably powered.

The air is sucked in through the back of the unit and the purified air comes out of the top front gap between the facing and the button panel.

The unit is easy enough to open to replace the filters. It’s a little tricky to snap back into place after but a squeeze and push sorted that. I prefer that to having loose fittings that might vibrate.

There are two filters in the machine – a carbon filter which they recommend you change every 3 months and a HEPA filter which should last 12-18 months depending on usage. The carbon filters have not been listed on the HoMedics web site and I emailed customer service to see how I could get some. After 3 weeks they are now available to buy from them direct. There is a an ongoing cost for the filters – at the time of writing 7 pounds for four carbon filters (plus P&P unless your order is over 10 pounds) and 20 pounds for the HEPA filter. So around 27 pounds a year for filters. I couldn’t find any other supplier of the filters for this machine aside from going direct to HoMedics. The HEPA filter easily pushes into place in the back of the unit and the carbon filter has a couple of tabs to slot onto and secures into some push slots on the grill of the inside rear cover. It would be possible to buy carbon filter to cut to size but the Homedics are reasonably priced and pre-cut.

We also used this to fight a strong chemical odour coming from our neighbours through the floor space downstairs. We used it on the lowest setting and it made the air much more comfortable to breathe.

After 3 weeks the filters show no signs of use, no dust or grubbiness, which is great considering our house is old, drafty and dusty. The unit is light enough for me to move around and is pretty stable. The shape means the footprint is as small as possible. The only downside for me is I’d prefer a longer power cable length. At around 71″ or 182cm it’s adequate so no stars deducted but longer would be even better.

All in all I’m very pleased indeed with this air purifier and it will be a regular fixture for us with easier breathing.

Very pleased and effective for my allergies

  26. Anonymous says:

We live a bit close to a main road and suffer allergy problems from pollen so have invested in a number of air cleaning systems over the years.

Last year we bought a large Homedics HEPA filter and it seems to do a good job improving the quality of our air. There is noticeably less dust in the atmosphere. The only problem is that there are three speed settings and even on the quietest setting the sound of the machine is quite audible. You would never describe it as silent. Being fairly white noise you tend to blot it out and ignore it easily. But we often find it best to run the filter when we are not in the room and turn it off when we are nearby.

Best of all, I am convinced Homedics filters help a bit with my snoring and we generally sleep better when we’re filtering the air in our bedroom.

So… this new filter has come into the house in addition to the previous generation filter that had parallel sides, and it’s interesting to compare the differences. This new model curves out at the top, which means it takes up a tiny bit more space in your room. Probably most noticeable is that this new filter has a carbon odour filter – this is a sheet of black foam with two holes cut into the top and it hangs from two plastic hooks, filtering the air as it comes into the machine before it hits the HEPA filter, which is a kind of cardboard box about an inch thick containing the folded filter material. Air is sucked in the back of the machine and filtered air is vented out the top.

So, it’s a bit more attractive than the previous generation Homedics filter. It has three speed settings and a timer feature that lets you set the machine to turn off after a specified number of hours.

There is just one problem with my machine – one of the buttons on the top control panel rattles. Like crazy. Once I figured out what was going on I solved the problem by sticking an inch of Scotch tape over the edge of the button and this stopped the rattling once and for all. But it doesn’t look particularly attractive, and every once in a while the tape peels off and the rattle starts again.

This is an excellent room purifier for anyone who suffers from hay-fever or pet allergies.
I’ve been using it in my bedroom, running it at full (noisy) power to prepare the room before I go to bed, then shifting it into (very quiet) night mode.
It isn’t a small unit (about two and a bit feet high) but that’s understandable since it IS powerful.

    Recommended.

  28. geegeekay says:

Like others have noted, it’s bigger than I thought, but not too heavy, looking like a large file shredder. I mistakenly thought that the fan component might be more notable given its prominence in the description but it really doesn’t give an extra summer benefit.

It can get noticeably louder at higher speeds but as it has a timer it’s easy to leave it running for a limited time automatically. The little blue light can be turned off to prevent sleep interference.

Does it work? Well, I notice it leaves the same faint smell HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaners do and that’s the best judgement I can give as I’m using it as extra hygiene rather than disease control.

I probably would’ve spent money on a cheaper model myself and maybe one that’s a bit quieter (if that combo is possible), but still it seems a good enough unit for the price.

Insert carbon filter and switch on. Very good air filter – it does the job. Very easy to use. It also cools the air as a fan. It draws air in and utputs it upwards. On higher settings it’s a bit noisy. However. works very well on lower setting. Lets you turn operational lights off for a bedroom – so as not to annoy in the dark.

  30. Robbie Miller Kaplan says:

Easy to set up and does what it promises. Unfortunately bigger than I would have liked it to be and also it says it’s very quiet in operation but that’s only true for lower speed modes. When it’s set to maximum, it’s not as quiet as it promises to be. Otherwise a very good product.

  31. Pallavi Kenkare says:

I really wasn’t sure I needed an air purifier (and perhaps don’t) but am suitably impressed by this unit. No doubt it would be of great value to anyone with an allergy to household particles, whether from outside (pollen, exhaust fumes) or inside (household cleaners, etc.).

It’s bigger than the paper-shredder-size I expected but that’s because I didn’t spot the dimensions in the pictures. The picture showing it as the same height as a coffee table is misleading, unless the coffee table is a lot taller than ours. It’s not that I’m complaining about the size, just that you need to be aware before buying. I’d publish photos but am away on holiday right now.

The controls are intuitive and, at least on the low setting, the noise level is unlikely to disturb anyone. The same can’t be said for the higher speeds but you can use those to prepare a room and then switch to low when the room is occupied. The HEPA filter should do an effective job on particles but will need replacing at least annually. A carbon filter is also supplied, to eliminate smells.

Thinking about it, you don’t need to have an allergy to benefit from this. There’s been a lot of bad press on airborne chemicals from a wide range of household products. I’m pleased to have the purifier and will make good use of it.

  32. HwaBrimaejm says:

Well it arrived in an absolutely huge box and that was an indication of just how big this unit is, I don’t think it’s going to be unobtrusive in any room, so just be aware of that if you are contemplating a purchase. In use, it is really simple to use, there’s not much more to it than plug it in and you’re off. Obviously I haven’t replaced any filters yet but that looks simple enough so it’s very easy to use.

There are 3 speeds, and on the highest setting it’s very noisy, while the slowest speed is just noticeable but ok once you are used to it I guess. We haven’t reached peak hay fever season yet so I can’t really add much about its effectiveness, but for sufferers this looks like a unit you might consider.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBloomin massive! I thought it would be a dinky thing that could fit on a table or something, but this fits BESIDE the table! Because it is so big, it easily cleans the air of a large room and with three settings, you can clean the air very quickly indeed. It also has a choice of timers by the simple click of one button (2hrs, 4hrs, 8hrs).

Very easy and simple to work which is a blessing. You don’t really need the instructions as it is extremely obvious with so few buttons. You don’t want to have to fiddle with an air cleaner when your nose is itching like mad and you’re needing instant relief. I anticipate being able to sit in my draughty sunlounge this summer and not have to worry about hayfever. It will become a sanctuary rather than just another part of the house where pollen gets in.

The noise? I wouldn’t exactly call this device quiet, but then it IS big and clearing a lot of air at any one time. Nevertheless, if you can, keep it at the far end of a room and not, like I did, right next to the TV so that you have to turn the volume up. I also found it a little confusing that in spite of turning the device off, it still kept going until I turned it off at the mains (at which point I was able to turn the TV volume down).

It comes with a separate carbon filter which, unless you live in a particularly polluted area, shouldn’t really be needed. Again, it’s simple to put in. Just open up the back (it’ll require a bit of firmness along the top edge to open) and hang the filter, using the holes provided, on the back cover (not the main device) and click it all back together again. It’s all clearly shown in the instructions.

Definitely a worthwhile purchase for those in need of breathing relief.

A lot bigger than I was expecting, but not that it’s a bad thing. I didn’t feel the need to mess with the settings, instead just starting it as soon as it was plugged in. It’ll be good that it takes out the damp in the air, as I’ve noticed mold on the wall near my windows. I find taking deep breaths doesn’t have me coughing with a tickling cough now too. Very happy.
