Nothing to dislike, kala are a well known brand known for giving excellent value for money. The KA-S is a good buy for anyone wanting to try the Ukulele without spending too much cash, it sound much more expensive than it’s price tag would suggest and the fitted tuners do a good job of keeping it in tune. Brilliant playability and a really nice sound , it even comes with Aguila strings, how can you go wrong.
his was a birthday present for our daughter in law from my wife and I and her mother. She loved it !!! It was exactly what she wanted and started playing it while we were there. It has a lovely tone – much less tinny than her other one.
This is my second ukulele after playing for nearly two years and this one is just wonderful. Lightweight, beautifully made and has gorgeous intonation and sound – I love it!
Great sounding Uke at a mid-level price. Well worth paying the extra over a cheaper alternatively, this Kala stays in tune longer and sounds much better.
Bought as a gift for my husband, who really likes it. The sound is good. It seems quite good for those who are beginning or have a little experience with the instrument.
Dbutante, cet instrument a t trs facile prendre en main ! Il sonne trs bien, et les finitions sont bonnes.
La corde de MI a toutefois tendance se dsaccorder ( voir avec le temps comment cela volue)…
Really, Really nice sound and size. Super happy with this.
Great ukulele for the price. Well built , excellent finish, nice tone , have seen same model online for a least 10 to 20 more at other music stores. Next day delivery using Amazon Prime
Beautiful instrument, I love it. It is way better than my 25 beginners ukulele. The strings are softer and it produces a louder sound. Buy it!
Good quality, holds its tuning, arrived promptly in good condition.
I love this ukulele. I purchased this one after getting a soprano ukulele from the same brand. (That one is equally as amazing) The only reason I got a tenor is because of the size. The soprano is a little small for my taste, and I wanted something bigger. The only downfall of this instrument is that it came severely out of tune, but I feel like that is to be expected when ordering an instrument online.
Excellent!now all I have to do is learn to play it!
Arrived very quickly. Lovely instrument. Nice sound and stays in tune for a long time.
Definitely recommend this make
A beautifully finished ukulele that holds its tuning very well and sounds just wonderful. I love it and I can’t put it down. Stay away from plastic ones and just save a little more you will not regret this purchase. Make sure you buy a proper uke tuner, a capo and also a gig bag or hard case if you can afford i
Absolutely love it. Good quality and lovely tone, really enjoy playing it.
One of my fav instruments to date! Great sound! Great feel!1 highly recommend 🙂
Superb little instrument…..get the ukulology tuner as well….easy to play, makes you smile.
I looked on review sites to see what make to buy and not dissapointed with this. Its a good sound and nice size.
I bought two ukuleles – The KA-S for myself and the KA-15S for my daughter for Christmas. They are both beautiful instruments. I like the appearance of the KA-15S with its darker wood and the etching around the hole. But, I prefer the tone on the KA-S, which I would describe as richer and fuller. The KA-S has a lighter finish with a bit of a golden hue. Both have Aguila nylgut strings, which sound great and are easy on the fingertips. The only negative is that the tuning peg for the E string on the KA-S is loose. It doesn’t affect my ability to tune, but doesn’t feel right. No issues with the KA-15S. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube, so it’s easy to get started playing songs right away. Also, Kala has an online tuning app, so don’t need to buy the digital tuner. I absolutely love both instruments! Great value and great fun.
I took one star off because of the way it was shipped to me. When I picked it up at the post office, I realized that it hadn’t been packaged well for transatlantic travel (came from Sweden?), having very little cushion (apart from being wrapped in a thin squishy sheet). I nearly had a heart attack when I saw that the side of the cardboard box had been punched in. Thankfully the product arrived undamaged (Christmas is 1.5 weeks away!). Definitely takes longer than the average package to arrive to Canada, but it was worth it in the end. Thank you!
This is a perfect instrument for starting ukulele. I’m really happy with my choice.
Very nice ukulele.
I read alot of reviews and this seemed to be the best choice for quality and price.
It arrived quickly and was well packed.
Chosen as replacement for a Makala. Shark bridge which was in white and had manufacturing faults. Great ukelele and good quality. Recommended
I love this Ukulele. Such a good price and the quality is fantastic. Great for anyone wanting a little step up from the cheaper models. Mine came with a bag also which is great!!
Il corpo ben fatto, solido, “suona” di legno. Ponte molto solido. Non eccelse le rifiniture, la buca ha i bordi leggermente sbozzati.
Manico eccellente, tastiera altrettanto, molto scorrevole.
Six months in and I am getting there. lovely ukulele hardly had to tune since after first months use. Love i
Beautiful instrument. Great strings.Tuning settles down pretty quickly.Mos Def recommend !
After learning the basics on a lower value soprano ukulele, this is the perfect next step, the value for money is amazing, it feels more like a 200 ukulele to me, lovely rich sound
Really nice Ukulele, lovely finish to the wood with nice detail around the edge of the body, lovely tone.
Well worth the money.
Sure this is a laminate ukulele, but I thought that for the money the build quality and setup were excellent. The tuners are a little overly large and stark white in colour, but that is really my only gripe.
The sound of a laminate at this price is never going to challenge a high end instrument, but it is perfectly functional and has good projection.
Would certainly recommend as a first / beginner ukulele and certainly a better choice than many others of similar prices
As far as intonation and play is concerned, it is alright. It barely deviates from being in tune up the fretboard, and seems to perform well. The sound is nice and rich, and while I’m just an intermediate player I like it a bit more than my soprano. The extra frets do come in handy for playing some songs as well. My only issue with it is that the third string can buzz a bit when playing the notes a little hard (within reason), but this is a random manufacturing defect that could occur in a new uke. Don’t be afraid to return and re-buy this ukulele if you have buzzing issues that can’t be easily fixed.
Overall I would definitely buy this ukulele again. It’s a pretty cool instrument, and this one performs well. I’ve talked to friends who have been interested in getting one, and this is the one I recommend.
Very pleased with my ukelele. As a complete beginner just need to keep practicing.
If you are debating which Tenor ukulele to get, just remember to actually try them all out and pick the one you love and will play for a while.
Love this uke. It plays very well! I am obsessed with it.
Beautiful instrument, strung with the upgraded strings. It has a nice tone. The “action” on the neck is a little harder than I expected, compared to my Makala Dolphin Soprano Uke. There is also a little bit of a “buzz” on a string or two. Will probably have to take it to be adjusted, so I will have to put more money into it. But, compared to others I’ve looked at, this is a quality instrument for the price.
A decent ukulele for beginner if you’re not satisfied with the cheap ones ~20 pounds and want to go seriously with it.
Do your research on an instrument before you buy and before you misjudge! It’s a VERY common issue among ukuleles to lose tune fast if the strings aren’t stretched.
That all being said, it’s a beautiful brown ukulele. Light as a feather and easy to handle. I’m very pleased and can’t wait to play again.
Much better tone and quality than my original uke . Looks good too – was recommended by my uke tutor so am happy with it .
Good sounding instrument would recommend spending the little bit extra – now own two in family. Cheap ukulele just not worth buying
I already owned one of these and recomended this make to my brother in law so bought one for him too which je is very pleased with
The ukelele arrived in perfect condition, it corresponds to the descriptions and we are very happy with it.
After looking online at reviews for a better instrument we chose this and have not been disappointed as it’s brilliant.
Pros:
Aquila nylgut strings
Satin finish
Walnut as an exotic wood choice
Excellent tone and sustain
Lightweight
Balanced center of gravity at base of neck
Cons:
The fret edges are slightly sharp, but this is likely to lessen as it is played
glad to pick this one. sounds beautiful. my son loves it and play several hours every day. great purchase. i read all the reviews for this product and they are really helpful.
Box ticked.
It looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and is perfect.
this will last me years and still be beautiful.
Thanks to all who recommended this uke.
If you’re just testing the waters but want a quality instrument to start, I heartily recommend the Kala KA-C.
Also bought the red Snark clip on tuner which is great.
I think this is great ukulele. It tuned very easily, the action is at a good height, and the sound was very nice. It also stayed in tune, which I cannot say for the Hilo Deluxe Soprano ukulele which I also bought. I would definitely recommend this ukulele to others. I’m just a beginner so my knowledge of ukuleles isn’t that great, but I have played on about five different brands and I am very pleased with this one. It’s such a fun instrument to play. Kala KA-S
I’ve never played ukulele before, but I’ve been playing guitar for a while so I know how an instrument should feel. The laminate body on this instrument almost gives it a “cheesy” tone, but nothing wholly off-putting that the casual listener should be freaked out by.
Since I’m used to playing steel-string guitars that are almost always in tune, the “breaking-in” period on this ukulele was incredibly annoying. I would hear the strings fall out of tune as a chord resonated, and this problem lasted for about a week. Only now, after almost a month of regular playing, does this uke stay in tune for an acceptable period of time.
There are some weird issues with the frets — the C string never sounds right when pressed to the second fret, but it’s not a big deal to me, since I’m just a teenage girl playing stupid pop songs in her backyard.
All in all, if you’re trying to learn how to play the uke, and you’re buying something in this price range online, then yeah, this is a good purchase.
Received yesterday… 2 days early! What a surprise! It was well-packaged too. And… it had nylagut strings (i researched this and reviews say they are fantastic, the best, and I had no clue when I order this Kala!) I’m still working on the tuning aspect, but I love the sound and the quality – it’s a beautiful ukelele. I have to get used to how ‘lightweight’ it is! I hadn’t received the book or tuner (due in today’s mail), but I wanted to play right away, so – based on reviews – I downloaded Ukulele for Dummies, Kindle Edition. It’s Great! Audio & Video – in – the – book! So you can hear the way it should sound (basic tuning!) and see a video with a live performance of each lesson/song.
All in all, this beautiful little uke, and the book, made my night. And I look forward to the challenge of getting really good at it! It’s small enought to take everywhere!
Also, I didn’t have to go to a shop for the whole setup thing that I’ve read about with some other ukes on the market. I used this online tuner (it apparently doesn’t play on iphones and ipads though, just computers) and i was ready to go. here’s the link for it: [….]
happy strumming y’all! 🙂
This is the first instrument I have ever owned or played. It sounds amazing and is so much fun to just pick up and jam out some chords. You cannot go wrong with this Uku, I have heard a few different brands/models and I think this one sounds the best (for the cost), it definitely passes that line between toy and instrument. It even comes with nylgut strings, which are the brightest sounding.
It is also laminate which means it’s strong and forgiving, so you can take it anywhere and don’t have to worry about temperature and humidifiers like a solid wood piece.
My C string has a little “whistle” to it which is common of cheaper instruments or ones that have not been “set up”. It could be fixed if sent to a music shop, but it’s so miniscule that it is a non issue for me.
It took about a day or so of constant tuning and playing to stretch the strings.
It’s so simple and fun to just sit down and learn to play your favorite songs!
For $50, you could not ask for more fun!
I thought I would have to spend over $300 to get a decent one but was surprised by this KALA mahogany uke for only $90. It is beautiful and stays in tune with Grover-like tuning keys, is well engineered as to structure and the frets are on the mark; I like the sound – it’s a lot of fun – a good break from the guitar. We neen that kind of break. Fun is good.
Axl – do you still play yours?
Bought it to get me through a long road trip because there was no room for a guitar. For the price the quality was acceptable. Stays in tune for the most part but limited range of playable frets. Great beginner instrument, but would move up to higher quality for any serious playing. Recommend getting a case for it.
7/30/11 update: Recommend getting a George Gruhn soft case then not only are you stylin’ but with the shoulder straps you can carry it on your back while motorcycle riding. The more I play this little guy, the more I love it. (rating upped from 4 to 5 stars) It now tends to stay in tune 99% of the time. I shared it with a ukelele afficionado friend and he was quite impressed. I’ll be using it in a gig next week and am looking forward to it. At some point if I do upgrade, I’ll be seriously looking at the Kala brand.
Finding an online Ukulele tuner was easy, and there’s a smartphone app out there too. I’ve been playing this thing until my fingers hurt!
It’s really not bad. By quality standards in 2011, it’s really quite good for $65. That being said, it’s really nothing more than average. It’s a slight assemblage of wood with a nice set of strings drawn across it.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s worth the $65. I really wish it were possible to get something better at this price. In May 2012, this exact ukulele will cost $85, or a lesser version of this ukulele will cost $65.
Again… it’s not bad. But it’s not great. Yes, I did give it four stars. That’s the state of the world.
Only problem…..my son who is very musically inclined and plays piano, guitar and violin saw it and took off with it and I am having a difficult time getting it back. So I think I am going to have to purchase another? The Kala Mango Concert is calling out to me! 😉
This is a widely-recommended and relatively inexpensive ukulele. It looks nice. The workmanship seems good. I play some guitar but was inspired to try the ukulele after a visit to Hawaii. First night I got it, I spent about three hours playing and enjoyed it. While this is a beginner instrument, the quality is good enough that I was not discouraged (as I found years ago with cheap guitars). But, DO expect to re-tune after each song you play. The nylon strings do stretch constantly. There are ukulele tuners on the web (they will repeat the notes you need), and there are lots of learning materials. I’m quite happy with the purchase.
This is my 2nd ukulele, my first being a Hilo ukulele which was made with crappy strings. I ordered this ukulele about 2 months ago and took less than a week to arrive. When I first opened it, it was untuned, which was normal. It also came with White Aquila ukulele strings, which made it a mellow, but louder sound. I compared both ukuleles and for the win was the Kala Mahogany Soprano ukulele. The Kala brand ukuleles outbeat almost any of the Lanikai ukuleles by a milestone. I played my cousin’s Lanikai concert and Tenor ukulele, but they sounded like crap compared to the Kala ukulele. Although you cannot lay this ukulele flat, I still rate it 5/5. If you were to buy this ukulele anywhere else, it would cost around $80-$95.
Warning: Can be hard to put down or pass by without picking up.
