Nothing to dislike, kala are a well known brand known for giving excellent value for money. The KA-S is a good buy for anyone wanting to try the Ukulele without spending too much cash, it sound much more expensive than it’s price tag would suggest and the fitted tuners do a good job of keeping it in tune. Brilliant playability and a really nice sound , it even comes with Aguila strings, how can you go wrong.
his was a birthday present for our daughter in law from my wife and I and her mother. She loved it !!! It was exactly what she wanted and started playing it while we were there. It has a lovely tone – much less tinny than her other one.
This is my second ukulele after playing for nearly two years and this one is just wonderful. Lightweight, beautifully made and has gorgeous intonation and sound – I love it!
Great sounding Uke at a mid-level price. Well worth paying the extra over a cheaper alternatively, this Kala stays in tune longer and sounds much better.
Bought as a gift for my husband, who really likes it. The sound is good. It seems quite good for those who are beginning or have a little experience with the instrument.
Very pleased with this ukulele, looks good and sounds good. I’ve just started learning to play and pleased I didn’t go for a cheaper one, at least I know it’s me not the instrument if it doesn’t sound right! A friend who does play commented at the quality of the sound.
Really, Really nice sound and size. Super happy with this.
My first ever Ukulele. Actually it’s my first ever stringed instrument and I’m very pleased with my purchase. The Ukulele seems well constructed and looks great. Although I’m no expert I do know what a Ukulele should sound like and this sounds like a Ukulele. I would advise anyone that doesn’t own a clip on tuner to buy one when you purchase your Ukulele because you’ll need to constantly tune it initially as the strings will stretch.
Great ukulele for the price. Well built , excellent finish, nice tone , have seen same model online for a least 10 to 20 more at other music stores. Next day delivery using Amazon Prime
Beautiful instrument, I love it. It is way better than my 25 beginners ukulele. The strings are softer and it produces a louder sound. Buy it!
Good quality, holds its tuning, arrived promptly in good condition.
I have had this Uke for about a year and a half. The short review is that I absolutely love it. Since I bought this one I have gotten the Kala Concert and Tenor ukes. The quality and sound of all three is unsurpassed. As I have progressed with the ukulele I have played other sopranos and have not found any to equal the sound of this one. It is simply a wonderful uke. I’m not sure what the difference is between a “beginner” uke and a “better” one is, but again, even the “better” ukes I’ve played don’t surpass, or in most cases even come close to this one. Highly recommended.
I love this ukulele. I purchased this one after getting a soprano ukulele from the same brand. (That one is equally as amazing) The only reason I got a tenor is because of the size. The soprano is a little small for my taste, and I wanted something bigger. The only downfall of this instrument is that it came severely out of tune, but I feel like that is to be expected when ordering an instrument online.
Excellent!now all I have to do is learn to play it!
Arrived very quickly. Lovely instrument. Nice sound and stays in tune for a long time.
Definitely recommend this make
A beautifully finished ukulele that holds its tuning very well and sounds just wonderful. I love it and I can’t put it down. Stay away from plastic ones and just save a little more you will not regret this purchase. Make sure you buy a proper uke tuner, a capo and also a gig bag or hard case if you can afford i
Bought for my 5 year old daugher and she loves it. Wanted to get her something a little nicer than the cheapest Ukes. This has a really lovely tone. Highly recommended for beginners or as a knockaround instrument to take on travels and adventures.
Absolutely love it. Good quality and lovely tone, really enjoy playing it.
One of my fav instruments to date! Great sound! Great feel!1 highly recommend 🙂
Well made and more importantly, stays in tune. Chose this over the others due to positive feedback from others and well worth the cost.
This tenor uke is really beautiful; but as we all know there’s more to an instrument than beauty. I almost sent this back because the nut was too high making it hard to bar and finger near the nut . I’m no luthier, but since I work with wood I figure I can fix it. I put a capo on the last fret and sure enough, it much easier to play. Correct me if I wrong, but once capoed, this demonstrates how low the nut ‘can’ go next to the last fret. I’ll set the strings about 1mm higher. Then I can play this uke without the capo.
Stunning ukulele. Definitely worth the investment as a begunner ukulele for the sound and quality. Cant recommend it enough!
Superb little instrument…..get the ukulology tuner as well….easy to play, makes you smile.
I looked on review sites to see what make to buy and not dissapointed with this. Its a good sound and nice size.
ice sound. some of the frets aren’t quite placed correctly, which really messes with my perfect pitch. but it has a nice tone for the price you pay.
I was disappointed that the gig bag shown in the description was not included when the box arrived. Otherwise, The ukulele gets 5 stars. The wood is beautiful and it sounds great.
Well made, great sound, looks the part, only trouble is, my grandson has absconded with it o well, got to get another one
This is so much more beautiful in person than I thought it would be!! It sounds gorgeous and the strings are great quality. I bought a Snark tuner to tune it each time I play because it goes out of tune a lot when the strings are new. I researched and researched, and decided I had to have a Kala because they’re the best. I play guitar and viola, so I’m musical, but new to the ukulele. I’m so glad I got the concert size, it sounds more full and deep than a soprano. It’s PERFECT!!
Really pleased with my ukulele lovely sound and we’ll made
Beautiful sound! Lovely quality – my son was over the moon at Christmas. It was simple for his to get to grips with and he had no issues moving between his guitars and this beautiful little instrument – very happy with purchase – wouldn’t hesitate to recommend!
I bought two ukuleles – The KA-S for myself and the KA-15S for my daughter for Christmas. They are both beautiful instruments. I like the appearance of the KA-15S with its darker wood and the etching around the hole. But, I prefer the tone on the KA-S, which I would describe as richer and fuller. The KA-S has a lighter finish with a bit of a golden hue. Both have Aguila nylgut strings, which sound great and are easy on the fingertips. The only negative is that the tuning peg for the E string on the KA-S is loose. It doesn’t affect my ability to tune, but doesn’t feel right. No issues with the KA-15S. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube, so it’s easy to get started playing songs right away. Also, Kala has an online tuning app, so don’t need to buy the digital tuner. I absolutely love both instruments! Great value and great fun.
Bought this for my teenage daughter for Christmas and within and hour the house is full of hawaiian sounds of loveliness! definitely go for this one as it is the concert ukulele and is a bit bigger than the soprano which gives you a fuller range of notes. Her friend had been given the soprano and she said to my daughter that she found it hard to play as the strings are so close together and the ukulele was too small. This one is just the right size, looks so lovely and gives out such sweet highs and amazing lows, well worth the price. Was delivered quickly and packaged very well.
I bought this ukulele for my boyfriend who is an elementary music teacher and loves playing. He did quite a bit of research on different ukuleles before finally putting this on his wish list, so I felt confident buying it for him, and purchased another set of the strings that it comes with separately. It is a beautiful product and has a great sound. The mahogany color is exactly what you see in the picture, in fact the entire instrument is true to what is pictured here (though you can look at other images and YouTube videos to see this model). The strings are quite nice and have a great sound.
I took one star off because of the way it was shipped to me. When I picked it up at the post office, I realized that it hadn’t been packaged well for transatlantic travel (came from Sweden?), having very little cushion (apart from being wrapped in a thin squishy sheet). I nearly had a heart attack when I saw that the side of the cardboard box had been punched in. Thankfully the product arrived undamaged (Christmas is 1.5 weeks away!). Definitely takes longer than the average package to arrive to Canada, but it was worth it in the end. Thank you!
Nice little instrument. It’s not ornate, but it plays well and holds its tune. The construction is solid and neat, no sloppiness that I noticed. It’s a laminate, of course, but a nicely made one that will be a rewarding instrument for a beginner or casual player. I’m really happy with it – each time I am tempted to purchase another uke, I have to ask myself what I’d actually get from a new uke that this one doesn’t provide – and the answer so far has been “not much”!
Really like this uke, it has a good sound both acoustic and plugged in. Tuner and volume controls work well. Only gripe is it doesn’t seem to stay in tune very long. I typically have to do a quick tune everytime I play it.
This is a perfect instrument for starting ukulele. I’m really happy with my choice.
Very nice ukulele.
I read alot of reviews and this seemed to be the best choice for quality and price.
It arrived quickly and was well packed.
Chosen as replacement for a Makala. Shark bridge which was in white and had manufacturing faults. Great ukelele and good quality. Recommended
God damn satisfied!!! I reed much review before bought this brand and model. It’s playing very well. My girlfriend are bored to listen to me… I’m a beginner 🙂
I love this Ukulele. Such a good price and the quality is fantastic. Great for anyone wanting a little step up from the cheaper models. Mine came with a bag also which is great!!
Manico eccellente, tastiera altrettanto, molto scorrevole.
Six months in and I am getting there. lovely ukulele hardly had to tune since after first months use. Love i
Don’t get me wrong, this ukulele is a delight. I got a concert size for Christmas which I really enjoy. I travel the concert size with case is too big for carry on, I could sign a waver for damages, or buy a ticket for the instrument. So I bought the Sorprano. The quality of the sound compared to the concert size is more shrill in my opinion. Never the less it plays nicely, it is made well and it’s a breeze to take along for fun times.
as the other reviewers have noted…this uke stays in tune, tone sounds rich, very lovely, and I am very pleased with this purchase.
Beautiful instrument. Great strings.Tuning settles down pretty quickly.Mos Def recommend !
After learning the basics on a lower value soprano ukulele, this is the perfect next step, the value for money is amazing, it feels more like a 200 ukulele to me, lovely rich sound
Really nice Ukulele, lovely finish to the wood with nice detail around the edge of the body, lovely tone.
Well worth the money.
As cheap ukuleles go, buying Kala is an extremely safe choice – being as they are one of the biggest brands on the planet.
Sure this is a laminate ukulele, but I thought that for the money the build quality and setup were excellent. The tuners are a little overly large and stark white in colour, but that is really my only gripe.
The sound of a laminate at this price is never going to challenge a high end instrument, but it is perfectly functional and has good projection.
Would certainly recommend as a first / beginner ukulele and certainly a better choice than many others of similar prices
I really like this ukulele, and have enjoyed playing it. The construction seems good, and I haven’t noticed any flaws in how it was put together, its finish, or it’s stability. It’s very visually attractive, and aside from a few flaws in the fretboard wood it looks great!
As far as intonation and play is concerned, it is alright. It barely deviates from being in tune up the fretboard, and seems to perform well. The sound is nice and rich, and while I’m just an intermediate player I like it a bit more than my soprano. The extra frets do come in handy for playing some songs as well. My only issue with it is that the third string can buzz a bit when playing the notes a little hard (within reason), but this is a random manufacturing defect that could occur in a new uke. Don’t be afraid to return and re-buy this ukulele if you have buzzing issues that can’t be easily fixed.
Overall I would definitely buy this ukulele again. It’s a pretty cool instrument, and this one performs well. I’ve talked to friends who have been interested in getting one, and this is the one I recommend.
I would like to start by saying that this is a very good instrument and I really love the sound and projection of it. I just received the Ukulele today and I really like it. My only concern is that as soon as I started to playing it I noticed that when I hit on the 13th fret, it’s off tuned and opaque. I would like to resolve this issue. Please contact me on how to return this instrument to trade for a new one (same kind) without that problem.
Very pleased with my ukelele. As a complete beginner just need to keep practicing.
Bought as an upgrade to a 20 Ukulele. Great sound and keeps in tune. Would gladly recommend to others.
I have been playing the ukulele for about 9 years now and have played them all. From sopranos, concerts, tenors and baritones. Tenors have the best sound and feel for me so I decided to look for a great budget tenor. For an ukulele that was under ~$170 there is no better quality anywhere. I was debating on getting this ukulele compared to 9 other models that were just under $200 (Luna TT, Gretsch G9120, Cordoba 20TM, Islander MT-4, Fender Hau’oli and some other Kala models). I went into my local music store and absolutely fell in love with the Kala PWT over the others. The tone is rich and spectacular and it is extremely easy to tune. The PWT tends to stay in tune very well. I purchased this ukulele wanting something a step above an Oscar Schmidt that I have. The frets are a bit sharp straight out of the box, however, with a little love and care this ukulele can be customized to perfection. The projection and tone are fantastic. I absolutely love the sound of pacific walnut. The unique pacific walnut grains are absolutely phenomenal to look at and I have received numerous compliments from friends and family on this ukulele. Overall, I truly do recommend this ukulele to beginners and expert players alike.
If you are debating which Tenor ukulele to get, just remember to actually try them all out and pick the one you love and will play for a while.
Love this uke. It plays very well! I am obsessed with it.
Tel que dcrit, fonctionne trs bien. Le son est trs bon pour un dbutant. C’est un instrument facile apprendre. La commande est arriv rapidement, je suis trs satisfaite et je le recommande.
I read everyone else’s reviews, watched youtube videos and finally picked this model for my first ukulele. I’ve fallen in love with everything George Harrison and after receiving this beautiful instrument I now know why he traveled around with a trunk full of always passing them out to friends. This concert uke is the perfect size and it is so easy to use. I love to just pick it up and strum away. I also just began playing the electric guitar so it’s a perfect way to limber up my fingers for the more challenging chords on that. So I join many of you who wisely picked this great ukulele. It’s wonderful!
I have 4 ukuleles at this point. And the kala concert KA-C is exactly what a ukulele should be. It’s fantastic. I’d definitely recommend it to someone who is starting out, or someone who is looking for a decent quality uke for a reasonable price. I’m giving it five stars because it’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. 🙂 if you’re debating getting a really good uke in this price range, this is the one. 🙂 kala is an excellent brand as well. I’ve got an epiphone Les Paul with a pick up, I’ve got a laniki tunauke in the concert size, and I’ve got two kala ukuleles. One soprano and the other the kala KA-C. You can’t go wrong with this brand. I definitely recommend this one. 🙂
Beautiful instrument, strung with the upgraded strings. It has a nice tone. The “action” on the neck is a little harder than I expected, compared to my Makala Dolphin Soprano Uke. There is also a little bit of a “buzz” on a string or two. Will probably have to take it to be adjusted, so I will have to put more money into it. But, compared to others I’ve looked at, this is a quality instrument for the price.
A decent ukulele for beginner if you’re not satisfied with the cheap ones ~20 pounds and want to go seriously with it.
Everyone seems to gripe about the ukulele losing it’s tune. What you need to do is go to Youtube and search “stretching ukulele strings”. There are a few videos on this that tend to include tuning as well. I will say that you will need to do the stretching process more than once depending on the strings. After the first round of stretching my C and E strings remained in tune during my entire 2 hour use. The G and A strings continually lost tune, so I will be sure to concentrate stretching those two strings.
Do your research on an instrument before you buy and before you misjudge! It’s a VERY common issue among ukuleles to lose tune fast if the strings aren’t stretched.
That all being said, it’s a beautiful brown ukulele. Light as a feather and easy to handle. I’m very pleased and can’t wait to play again.
Much better tone and quality than my original uke . Looks good too – was recommended by my uke tutor so am happy with it .
Good sounding instrument would recommend spending the little bit extra – now own two in family. Cheap ukulele just not worth buying
First off, I barely play the uke so this is a beginner’s review. I taught myself a few songs on my roommates and when I moved out I found myself missing it so I came onto Amazon to get one for myself. I would classify this as a beginner ukulele because I am beginner and it worked great for me. I will say that it comes out of tune A LOT. But that being said I would assume that is a common problem with brand new strings and lately I have to tune it less and less, but that does requires some patience. Overall though it works great for my needs and I loved the price.
I already owned one of these and recomended this make to my brother in law so bought one for him too which je is very pleased with
The ukelele arrived in perfect condition, it corresponds to the descriptions and we are very happy with it.
From the first pluck I realised that I’d made the right decision in buying this beautiful instrument. I enjoyed learning on my little, cheap, soprano, but the lovely, warm, soft tones are a different experience. Also the larger size are just right fro getting my stubby fingers on the frets. Please note that you’ll need a proper gig bag.
Really pleased with this little uke – better tone than I would have expected from a fifty quid ukulele and holds it’s tuning well. Struggling to put it down since it arrived!
I read what other people recommended, chose it, Bought it, Love it. Very happy with this lively little instrument .Pierre.
Brought for my daughter as a birthday present as she has progressed beyond the capabilities of the cheaper beginner versions.
After looking online at reviews for a better instrument we chose this and have not been disappointed as it’s brilliant.
I am very pleased with this purchase. I was upgrading from the Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert ukulele. I wanted a tenor size one, and this Kala KA-PWT is an excellent choice. The ukulele is beautifully constructed, the wood grain is very interesting, the darker binding allows the surfaces to pop out, and the satin finish is preferable to gloss, in my opinion. The challenge finding this model was that many ukes at this level have a gloss finish and resemble guitars, but I find the traditional finish to be nicer. I would recommend this model to beginners and seasoned players alike. It is a good value and I like the fact that I could choose a wood besides mahogany. I am now sold on the Kala brand and plan to add a soprano and baritone to my collection at some point.
Pros:
Aquila nylgut strings
Satin finish
Walnut as an exotic wood choice
Excellent tone and sustain
Lightweight
Balanced center of gravity at base of neck
Cons:
The fret edges are slightly sharp, but this is likely to lessen as it is played
glad to pick this one. sounds beautiful. my son loves it and play several hours every day. great purchase. i read all the reviews for this product and they are really helpful.
First uke so it needed to be good to help keep the interest longer than a month.
Box ticked.
It looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and is perfect.
this will last me years and still be beautiful.
Thanks to all who recommended this uke.
The uke arrived quickly and was packaged very well, something I was worried about. The uke itself looks stunning and sounds amazing. Anyone worried like I was about buying an instrument without trying it out first then you shouldn’t I couldn’t be happier with this purchase.
This ukulele was bought for me as a present.when presented with it I first thought it would be a toy not as it turns out a serious instrument. How wrong I was, if you wish to learn to play a ukulele buy a Karla ka-c concert, I am a reasonable guitar player and so was able to learn quite quickly, the support on the Internet is amazing for these instruments. This uke by Karla is outstanding value for money it stays in tune it sounds good, it looks good, it has a quality nut and bridge and Aquila strings. Must mention omega music the supplier I am sure they must give these instruments the once over before sale because my example just plays so well, being a concert size gives more room for fingering, I can’t put the damn thing down, JUST BUY IT!
Excellent ukulele for the money. I am getting many hours of enjoyable playing from it. I am really glad I decided to upgrade to a concert ukulele as the tone is much stronger than the soprano. I think for someone who wants a change from playing a wind instrument such as myself.
Kala make some of the best ukes and this is no exception. Lovely action, beautiful sound, gorgeous to look at. Only adjustment was to put on a set of low G Aquila strings. I love this uke.
After much online reading about which Ukulele brand and style is good for a beginner I pick this one and I could not be happier. First off it looks great, like a real instrument, not like some of the toy ukuleles I have seen. The wood has a rich look to it and it feels like it should have cost a lot more. With a little bit of tuning with the cherub tuner I got also, I was making a decent sound for a person who has never played a stringed instrument. I have had it a couple of weeks now and I have had to tune it each day, but I have read that is normal for newly stringed instruments and it will eventually get broken in and stay in tune longer. The sound quality is great, it has a nice rich tone to it and with just a few cords that I have learned I can produce a really good tune.
ice litte uku . looks good ! sounds good ! plays good ! If you’re looking for a good playable uke at a reasonable price, this is the one!!
Great quality uke I am thoroughly enjoying it already and it come with good strings. Great value for money. Thanks
This was a great choice for my first Uke. It’s not a toy, has a nice look & sound (although I expected the finish to be a bit shinier). It is obviously well made and as an absolute beginner, I found I was quickly making pleasant sounding music with just a few basic chords. This Uke helped add me to the ranks of the Ukulele-addicted & as I got better, it sounded better :). Five months later, I’m ready to reward myself for daily practice with 2nd Uke, this time with a solid koa body top. I’ve tried the solid wood body Ukes and there is a definite difference, but at 3 or more times the price! That was not the place to start. I shall always be grateful to my Kala KA-C for helping draw me into the wonderful world of Ukulele music. I suspect within a couple years, I shall be addicted enough to have a collection of sizes and brands as most Uke players seem to do.
If you’re just testing the waters but want a quality instrument to start, I heartily recommend the Kala KA-C.
I’ve been playing guitar for about 16 years and wanted to venture out into the wider world of stringed instruments. I’m a total ukulele beginner but I’m used to hi end quality guitars so I didn’t want a cheap toy. I’ve been really happy with the build and material quality, the tone and the playability of this Ukelele. Stays in tune ok at first and gradually improves (normal as I understand) and has a really mellow sound. I’m happy with the purchase and glad I paid a little more for a finer instrument. Lower quality choices exist but probably aren’t for experienced musicians. Avoid tension tuners, they suck. This one has really nice geared tuners that feel sturdy and reliable.
Also bought the red Snark clip on tuner which is great.
I think this is great ukulele. It tuned very easily, the action is at a good height, and the sound was very nice. It also stayed in tune, which I cannot say for the Hilo Deluxe Soprano ukulele which I also bought. I would definitely recommend this ukulele to others. I’m just a beginner so my knowledge of ukuleles isn’t that great, but I have played on about five different brands and I am very pleased with this one. It’s such a fun instrument to play. Kala KA-S
This ukulele was my first. I’ve owned it for a year and a half and will be playing at two weddings with it in September. While I’m no expert on ukulele quality, this little guy has met or exceeded all of my expectations: it’s inexpensive, looks sharp, and has a full, warm tone. After about two months of daily playing, the strings were broken in enough to consistently produce the right pitches after tuning. I love my ukulele and don’t regret the purchase at all; however, I’ve since had a chance to play on my friend’s Lanikai LU-11 Soprano Ukulele , which was the other I researched and considered buying. It’s a little more expensive and does seem to have a fuller, clearer sound on some chords than this one. Overall, though, I think this is a solid choice for anybody who’s just starting out.
If you’re looking at ukuleles in this price range, this is a great purchase.
I’ve never played ukulele before, but I’ve been playing guitar for a while so I know how an instrument should feel. The laminate body on this instrument almost gives it a “cheesy” tone, but nothing wholly off-putting that the casual listener should be freaked out by.
Since I’m used to playing steel-string guitars that are almost always in tune, the “breaking-in” period on this ukulele was incredibly annoying. I would hear the strings fall out of tune as a chord resonated, and this problem lasted for about a week. Only now, after almost a month of regular playing, does this uke stay in tune for an acceptable period of time.
There are some weird issues with the frets — the C string never sounds right when pressed to the second fret, but it’s not a big deal to me, since I’m just a teenage girl playing stupid pop songs in her backyard.
All in all, if you’re trying to learn how to play the uke, and you’re buying something in this price range online, then yeah, this is a good purchase.
Received yesterday… 2 days early! What a surprise! It was well-packaged too. And… it had nylagut strings (i researched this and reviews say they are fantastic, the best, and I had no clue when I order this Kala!) I’m still working on the tuning aspect, but I love the sound and the quality – it’s a beautiful ukelele. I have to get used to how ‘lightweight’ it is! I hadn’t received the book or tuner (due in today’s mail), but I wanted to play right away, so – based on reviews – I downloaded Ukulele for Dummies, Kindle Edition. It’s Great! Audio & Video – in – the – book! So you can hear the way it should sound (basic tuning!) and see a video with a live performance of each lesson/song.
All in all, this beautiful little uke, and the book, made my night. And I look forward to the challenge of getting really good at it! It’s small enought to take everywhere!
I had never played a ukulele before. Been a guitar player for 40 years. But friends of mine had them and they convinced me to buy one too. I have fat fingers so a small ukulele was not going to work for me and the tenor one was more money so I chose the concert sized one. I looked at a few different brands on Amazon and read the reviews and found that this one was highly rated so I bought it and they were right. It was shipped quickly and it came already tuned! The construction looks good. The color is very nice. And it sounds great. I would also highly recommend this ukulele. Buy it….get your uke on.
Sooooo, like many of you, I looked high and low for a ukulele online. I read countless reviews and settled on this one and let me just tell you I’m so glad I did! I absolutely love it! At least when my boyfriend and roommate aren’t bogarting it. What they say about it coming out of tune easily in the beginning is true, but i find that the more i’ve been playing it, the less it’s been happening (and since there are 3 of us, it took no time at all to hold it’s tune longer). It’s also nice looking. Not overly fancy, but it gets the job done and doesn’t look cheap. I really can’t reccommend this uke enough. BUY IT! I’m positive you’ll love it as much as I/we do!
Also, I didn’t have to go to a shop for the whole setup thing that I’ve read about with some other ukes on the market. I used this online tuner (it apparently doesn’t play on iphones and ipads though, just computers) and i was ready to go. here’s the link for it: [….]
happy strumming y’all! 🙂
This is the first instrument I have ever owned or played. It sounds amazing and is so much fun to just pick up and jam out some chords. You cannot go wrong with this Uku, I have heard a few different brands/models and I think this one sounds the best (for the cost), it definitely passes that line between toy and instrument. It even comes with nylgut strings, which are the brightest sounding.
It is also laminate which means it’s strong and forgiving, so you can take it anywhere and don’t have to worry about temperature and humidifiers like a solid wood piece.
My C string has a little “whistle” to it which is common of cheaper instruments or ones that have not been “set up”. It could be fixed if sent to a music shop, but it’s so miniscule that it is a non issue for me.
It took about a day or so of constant tuning and playing to stretch the strings.
It’s so simple and fun to just sit down and learn to play your favorite songs!
For $50, you could not ask for more fun!
I decided to buy a ukelele because a lead guitar player from a band from Liverpool (George Harrison) had a collection of ukeleles at his home and when entertaining other musicians brought them out for them to play. I thought that was a great idea and decided to learn to play one.
I thought I would have to spend over $300 to get a decent one but was surprised by this KALA mahogany uke for only $90. It is beautiful and stays in tune with Grover-like tuning keys, is well engineered as to structure and the frets are on the mark; I like the sound – it’s a lot of fun – a good break from the guitar. We neen that kind of break. Fun is good.
Axl – do you still play yours?
Bought it to get me through a long road trip because there was no room for a guitar. For the price the quality was acceptable. Stays in tune for the most part but limited range of playable frets. Great beginner instrument, but would move up to higher quality for any serious playing. Recommend getting a case for it.
7/30/11 update: Recommend getting a George Gruhn soft case then not only are you stylin’ but with the shoulder straps you can carry it on your back while motorcycle riding. The more I play this little guy, the more I love it. (rating upped from 4 to 5 stars) It now tends to stay in tune 99% of the time. I shared it with a ukelele afficionado friend and he was quite impressed. I’ll be using it in a gig next week and am looking forward to it. At some point if I do upgrade, I’ll be seriously looking at the Kala brand.
This is my first Ukulele and I bought this one after reading the reviews. Not disappointed! Good quality for the money, but some fret issues I noticed. Stays in tune for a good while, but the neck bridge could be a little lower. Some chords sound out of tune when notes are fretted down low. This may be from the string getting pulled because the neck bridge is too high. A minor annoyance in my opinion. Also bough “Play Ukulele Today”. Great starter book!
Finding an online Ukulele tuner was easy, and there’s a smartphone app out there too. I’ve been playing this thing until my fingers hurt!
I got this uke about a week ago and I love it! I had just a little cheap one for a while, and I was tired of the tinny sound, so I upgraded to this one. Hard to keep in tune for the first little while, but other than that it has been fantastic! When I pulled it out of the box and played it I was really surprised by how good this uke sounded! I would highly recommend this to anybody who wants a really nice sounding ukulele, but isn’t willing to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Great buy!
It’s really not bad. By quality standards in 2011, it’s really quite good for $65. That being said, it’s really nothing more than average. It’s a slight assemblage of wood with a nice set of strings drawn across it.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s worth the $65. I really wish it were possible to get something better at this price. In May 2012, this exact ukulele will cost $85, or a lesser version of this ukulele will cost $65.
Again… it’s not bad. But it’s not great. Yes, I did give it four stars. That’s the state of the world.
So I finally got my little Kala KA-S and I luv it! I wanted a Uke for some time and I started doing research on what to purchase and after reading several reviews, I decided on the Kala. It arrived on time and it is soooo cute as well as good looking. The sound is incredible for a beginner Uke. I would say that a pro can use this as a great back up or go to Uke.
Only problem…..my son who is very musically inclined and plays piano, guitar and violin saw it and took off with it and I am having a difficult time getting it back. So I think I am going to have to purchase another? The Kala Mango Concert is calling out to me! 😉
This is a widely-recommended and relatively inexpensive ukulele. It looks nice. The workmanship seems good. I play some guitar but was inspired to try the ukulele after a visit to Hawaii. First night I got it, I spent about three hours playing and enjoyed it. While this is a beginner instrument, the quality is good enough that I was not discouraged (as I found years ago with cheap guitars). But, DO expect to re-tune after each song you play. The nylon strings do stretch constantly. There are ukulele tuners on the web (they will repeat the notes you need), and there are lots of learning materials. I’m quite happy with the purchase.
I’m a music therapy student at Arizona State, and I decided after one of my classes that it was about time I learned how to play a ukulele since I already play guitar. At first when I took this ukulele out of the box, I was a little disappointed. Now don’t get the wrong idea — you see, I didn’t know that ukulele’s TAKE TIME to keep their tune. I’ve had mine for about a month now and it’s been a week since I’ve tuned it and it’s still perfect. This is the case with any uke that you buy, starter or super expensive. Be patient. I have yet to have any problems with this ukulele, all of my chords ring true and now that it’s past it’s awkward stage it stays perfectly in tune for days on end. I would recommend this ukulele to anyone who wants a beautiful instrument on a budget. I am in LOVE with my ukulele!
This is my 2nd ukulele, my first being a Hilo ukulele which was made with crappy strings. I ordered this ukulele about 2 months ago and took less than a week to arrive. When I first opened it, it was untuned, which was normal. It also came with White Aquila ukulele strings, which made it a mellow, but louder sound. I compared both ukuleles and for the win was the Kala Mahogany Soprano ukulele. The Kala brand ukuleles outbeat almost any of the Lanikai ukuleles by a milestone. I played my cousin’s Lanikai concert and Tenor ukulele, but they sounded like crap compared to the Kala ukulele. Although you cannot lay this ukulele flat, I still rate it 5/5. If you were to buy this ukulele anywhere else, it would cost around $80-$95.
This uke took about 2 weeks to stablize the strings, neck, and tuning pegs. After it settled in, it really shined and still shines. I just picked it up after letting it collect dust for 2 months and it was in perfect tune. I am satisfied with the quality of the product. THe intonation up the frets is very close to dead on which means there was some engineering skill put into this peice. Very fair quality/price ratio here. If ever I get time to pass away, this will be part of my entourage.
Warning: Can be hard to put down or pass by without picking up.
