Measurements are accurate and my doodle has a thin neck and deep chest. It’s very adjustable and fits! The connectors are sturdy and easy to connect.

I was so thankful when I bought one of these harnesses for my first dog that I had to get one for my new dog. It is a lifesaver! It keeps my dogs right where they need to be when I am traveling.

Lightweight, sturdy, good quality harness. Just need to adjust once and able to wear easily. My girl will slip into the harness easily when she knows its time for her walk.

These are pretty easy to put on my dogs. One of them is always excited and wiggling around, so she can make it challenging at times. When I first started using these I would pull the seat belt through the back loop every time, that was very challenging. More so with a hammock seat cover on the back seat of the car. So now, I keep my seat belts buckled in all the time, and use the carabiner clip to to secure my pups to the seat belt. So much easier and convenient. I’ve had Kurgo seat belt harnesses in that past that specifically stated to not put the belt through the back loop and to use the carabiner instead. Hope its the same for this style, because that’s what works best for me. Certainly better than no seat belt!

Cannot really test its crash protection ability. 🙂

    PROS:
+very high quality materials, specially the buckles.
+sizing is quite accurate and its adjustable.

    CONS:
-buckle or clip system is quite unique, not very intuitive. But already got used to it.

I ordered this harness in size small for our 3-month-old black Lab puppy. As evidenced in the photo, Franny finds it extremely comfortable because it doesn’t interfere in the least with her naps. When I call her over to put it on in the morning, she does not hesitate. In fact, she hears the jingling of the buckles and knows it’s time to get dressed!

The best part – one section of the webbing started coming unwoven. I used a match to melt the frayed ends (YES, I took it off the pup first!) and that helped, but I was concerned that this was a sign other parts of the webbing would start to come apart. So I contacted Kurgo’s customer service, and I could not be more pleased with their response! Clearly, this is a company that understands. Pups are not just pets, they are family members, and they need to be kept safe. Even though Franny wasn’t losing sleep over this situation, I was feeling like a less-than-perfect mom – but Kurgo came through and all is well.

When Franny outgrows this size I won’t hesitate to order a larger Kurgo harness.

I highly recommend this product, and Franny gives it 5 paws up!

Fantastic customer service! Kudos to Kurgo!

Its a little hard to get them on but once you figure out which way the metal tabs are supposed to go, and get the chest straps set to the right lenght, it fits our young GSP well and the strap is easy to attach to the seat belt.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese do what theure meant to do but it can be a little more time consuming. The little metal buckles can be a bit of a struggle. They definitely do their job though. One worry I have is how to get the dog out in a hurry if in an accident and the car is upside down or catches fire, etc. It would be difficult especially if you are injured.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usershis is an excellent crash tested harness for the price! my service dog, maria, is comfortable in this harness, and it doesn’t restrict her movement! I was able to attach a pull strap to the nesting buckles for forward momentum pulling, and it worked just fine. maria feels more comfortable in the car with this harness, as the harness and seatbelt keep her from sliding around. I was pleasantly surprised with the carabineer attached to the seatbelt that came with this harness. it’s super heavy, and I doubt that it would break in a crash.

I love the harness for the ease of putting it on and taking it off. I like the fact that connectors and where the leash attaches to the harness are all metal. We just got a new convertible and want our medium sized dog to be able to hang in the back seat without fear of him jumping, this harness works great, but we do use another product/tether that clicks into the seatbelt and attaches to the harness. The looping around the car’s seatbelt was a little awkward because he was getting tangled up in the multiple straps (waist seatbelt, shoulder belt and lead) and he tended to get tangled. Now there’s just the one lead. Works well.

Once I’d set it up once it was easy to use – and looks to be very comfortable for our dog. The included car carabiner looks safe and is easy to get on and off. Perhaps some more reflective strips would be useful, but other than that cannot fault this harness – especially considering the price and comparison to other significantly more expensive products.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersThis is the dog harness that our dog, Chloe, was wearing when my husband was rear ended last week. It is one of the few dog harnesses that are crash tested like car seats are. My hubs was at a dead stop when someone plowed into him going 40+ mph. Chloe was with him. She was sitting in the BACKSEAT, wearing this harness, AND she was buckled in. Because of this, she was not hurt. If she hadn’t been properly secured, her 27 lb body would have slammed into the back of my husband’s seat, or had she been up front, she may have gone through the windshield. We all wear seatbelts. We put our kids in car seats. We need to be doing to the same for our fur babies.

This is super practical and has been great for our little chow who outgrew his car seat. Great to be able to hook into seatbelt and then straight to leash for walks. In fairness it took us a while to work out how to get it on him. A quick video showing how to unclip the buckles would be helpful- but once done once it’s super easy.

If you want safety for your dog while traveling in the car, this harness has been crash-tested! Many adjustments spot so it will fit your dog’s body type. The harness to attach to your car seat belt is built like a tank. The metal buckles are easy to use (not cumbersome) and engineered to not unbuckle. The quality and workmanship are superior; typical of all Kurgo products. This is a top-notch quality & functional harness that can be used for riding in the car & for walking. No cute designs or colorful patterns but I would rather have function over aesthetics when it comes to safety. Great value as well. Kurgo also has an excellent lifelong warranty on all its products. Buy this for your pooch.

First what you really need to know – sizing. I have a slightly overweight barrel chested Labrador and Large fits great. I actually ordered the XL too but when I put this on the chest strap was around her waist rather than on her sternum. When you fit it don’t just look at the strap length, make sure the back strap is around the chest. I think the Large would be perfect for pretty much every kind of Lab to be honest as the straps are 75% extended on pop-pop. People have described the size chart as ‘well off’, it isn’t- it is spot on. The only comment I woukd have is why not put some breeds on there. Other stuff, it looks great and is very sturdy, I do live in fear of one of those metal buckles going down the side of my car though. The enclosed seat belt clip is useless, it’s non adjustable too short and looks pretty garbage on the seatbelt. I bought the kurgo direct clip in seatbelt which is great.

I use this as a seat belt. I wish it was a little more adjustable, the chest part gets in the way of adjusting smaller. My puppy outgrew the small, but the medium is slightly too big. This is a problem I have with many harnesses that my pup is in-between sizes! It works as a seatbelt, but less so for walk on a leash. Would get 5 stars if it fit better. So, if your dog is clearly in a size range its great.

  32. Tilly5986if says:

Bought this harness for our small 5kg cross breed. She is quite narrow and the other harnesses we tried were only adjustable in the neck and around the chest and often had a bulging front chest strap that looks unsightly but also allowed our dog to chew on them until she chewed through. The Kurgo harness allows you to adjust around the neck, around the chest and there are two different lengths for the front panel. It fits perfectly and we love it. So much so, that we bought a second one for our other dog.

Love the fact that it is crash tested for car safety and that it comes with a really handy, quite short seat belt tether. All other seat belts for dogs we looked at were way too long for our dogs to be safely tethered in the car. This is the perfect length for us.

I’ve docked one mark purely because our dogs are both short-haired dogs with no undercoat and the harness is a bit rough on their hair. We have solved this by putting a little jumper or coat underneath to protect their hair. If it had softer padding in the front panel it would be perfect!

Pushing through the fitment is a bit fiddly until you’ve done it a few times . The metal fasteners are stronger & more secure than plastic . The fasteners don’t slip & don’t need to be readjusted .

Bought this for our jack Russel who has slipped his collar twice. Once adjusted correctly it fits well and is secure. The seat belt part is great, no more dog moving around while you are driving. The only downside is the harness buckles, they are very awkward to do up but it gets easier as you get used to doing it. All in all a good product.

I like this harness as a walking harness, but the straps seems to loosen fairly easily on their own, not a huge amount, but enough that I don’t like it as an in car safety harness, although I have yet to find and buy an alternative that I like..
I like the fact that the fastenings are metal and not plastic clips, it has a nice wide chest piece which, if it were not for the straps loosening, could be good as a car harness.

This harness was bought for our retriever as a car harness so that she can travel safely in the car. The most important consideration was safety and I am very re-assured by the quality and build of the harness. It is quite a heavy harness and while there may be lighter alternatives that use plastic fittings instead of metal I wanted to make sure that the harness was robust enough to protect our dog in case of an accident. The build quality looks excellent, thick nylon strapping and heavy duty metal fittings that look designed to last and withstand a lot of force.

The design is quite simple and it was easy to adjust to the size of our dog. The harness will adjust to accommodate different sized necks and torsos via four sliding buckles; once adjusted it was simply a matter of unclipping each time we put it on or off. I found the clasps a bit fiddly at first but they feel rock solid when fastened. The harness has attachments for a lead both at the front of the breast pad and on the top of harness so could be effectively used as a training/walking harness though this wasn’t our primary intention.

The harness comes with an equally sturdy-looking seat belt tether and is very good value for money. I feel reassured buying a brand that I recognise; the harness was apparently crash-tested and comes with a ‘lifetime warranty’ though I don’t know what the customer service is like for this product as I have never needed to use it.

The harness seems well-padded. I have seen other harnesses where there is more/thicker padding and where the straps/webbing is a bit wider, these may be more comfortable for prolonged wearing but in all honesty our dog seemed very comfortable wearing this one.

Overall I am very pleased with the harness. I did quite a lot of research before buying and if you are looking for a car (or multi-use) dog harness then I don’t think that you could do much better.

The harness is easy to fit once it’s been adjusted for the first time. Having a saloon car means there’s no option to pop waggy-tail in loadspace. The harness clips easily onto the centre seat belt shoulder strap and pooch settles down for a comfy ride on his nice leather sofa! Give me comfort that should I brake hard dog will be safe and not thrown forward and I won’t have 40 kilos of dog hitting me on the back of the head!

Also it’s required by law in UK.

I primarily use this harness with a seatbelt when I take the dog with me. He is restless and frequently circles before laying down in the seat. This repeated behavior twists the seatbelt attachment and requires attention often. This is not the fault of the harness or attachment, just a quirk of the dog.
I have used the harness for walking my dog and it does a good job of preventing pulling when the leash is connected to the front loop. Fortunately, he is starting to outgrow this pulling behavior, and I can usually walk him using the regular collar and leash.
The construction of this harness is plenty rugged and, if fitted to the dog, should never be a cause for concern. I would definitely recommend the Kurgo to others dog owners.
As is my usual practice, I will return to update this review should something happen to change my opinion.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersKnowing my Catahoula Leopard Dog won’t become a 107 lb projectile in a wreck or hard curve is a great relief. This harness is built very very strong with some seriously strong stitching in the stress area and metal where it counts. I love this harness so much that I bought another when he outgrew the first one. It had almost zero signs of usage when it was retired. I also love how easy it is to adjust and how well it’s made with nice comfortable material on his chest.

It’s also great for everyday use. The hook in the front is perfect for walks because it twists him toward me when he pulls. It took no time for that to break him from pulling. The included seatbelt strap is great for a healing leash. It’s just long enough for him to have to hug my left heal when we walk to the Jeep and back when we go for rides. I can even take him along when the doors are off, because I have 100% confidence he is safe/secure and can’t reach the door threshold.

If there’s a size to fit your fur-baby, I strongly recommend this one. It’s sturdy and effective and comfy.

Purchased for my golden retriever pup. It’s very sturdy material and easy to get on, if the dog cooperates haha. Once you’ve done it a few times it’s a breeze. He’s gone from around 30 lbs to well over 60 and it has easily adjusted to his growing frame.
The one annoyance I’ve found is that the snap that holds the tether that goes under the dogs belly and hooks into the top metal pieces keeps coming undone if he pulls at all. Not a big deal when it’s on but it’ll start to sit sideways although doesn’t really affect the functionality. The annoying part is remembering to snap the piece back in place after I take it off if him. If unsnapped it’s a pain to reconnect without it twisting up and that would be uncomfortable if the dog pulls while it’s twisted. It’s not a dealbreaker for me though. I tried a few others and this one is still my favorite.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersWe are very happy with this harness. We purchased it because there are not many harnesses on the market that don’t have all metal buckles and attachments. Sturdy enough to endure the event of a car accident. As you can see in our video it is pretty easy to put on and take off. It is comfortable for our dog and it has worn well with daily use. Our dog is 9.5 lbs. For a dog smaller than 5 lbs it would not work. The length can also be adjusted, we use the short snap-in adjustment on the belly part of the harness. For a larger dog I would adjust it to the longer adjustment.

It will be a great harness once she has had more training to sit still when putting the harness on.

We purchased the Kurgo Tru-Fit dog harness for use in an auto dog bed that did not come with a harness. It works perfectly in the bed we have and keeps our dog put, all while still allowing a little movement for her to get comfortable. Our dog seems comfortable while wearing and riding in it and doesn’t appear to have complaints. The harness is sturdy and appears to be of nice quality. Our dog is very small and this is the first harness we have purchased that seems to fit her small frame so well. There are options on the harness to make the harness even smaller, if needed. This is wonderful, as anyone with a very small dog can likely attest to being a somewhat difficult feature to find. Our dog “squirms” a bit when trying to put it on her, so that is a bit of an issue, but is not a detriment to the harness. The clip on the harness that closes it around the body is a bit “fiddly” to get on, but once it gets hooked, there is no way that it would slip off. I gave 4 stars on ease of use only for that reason. A few in my family have trouble getting the closure hooked on our moving dog. This should in no way stop anyone from buying the harness. My family and I really love the harness, the look and weight of it, and think it is a nice quality harness. We definitely would recommend it to others.

This harness is well made and strong. I love the no-pull clip in the front. It really works, as sometimes I walk with a cane and it makes Charlie stop in his tracks. It took a few tries to clip the side buckles in, you have to put the buckle part with the logo bit in first, and once you’ve got that down you are good to go. I recommend this product. Bought one for the same price from Petsmart or Petco IDK which, and the dog chewed it and it didn’t do it’s no-pull thing worth a darn. This is a good investment. Measure your dogs chest and neck like the ad says and add 2 inches. Charlie is a tall, medium Cattledog and so I ordered the medium and there is plenty of room for growth. He’s only 7 months old.

  54. SherlenNestor says:

This dog harness is said to be tough and helpful in controlling a strong dog given to wandering off the straight and narrow. It delivers on both counts. Getting it onto a young, strong and rambunctious dog that won’t stand still for more than a half second at a time presents a challenge. Its buckles are made for strength and security over and above speed and ease of fastening. They do provide a secure, very precise fit. (Read the last two sentences again, slowly.) So, if the dog is rip-roaring excited about going for a walk or ride in the car and his master/mistress is unfamiliar with exactly how to get the straps on and together, and buckled, fast, watch out. The challenge is on par with trying to fasten a leather-strap-with-buckle wrist watch onto your wrist while operating a jackhammer.

If you have an elderly, docile dog of about the right size, enlist it as a training aid and be generous with rewards. Practice, practice, practice. If no such dog is available, try improvising something you can practice putting the harness on and fastening its buckles.. Once you get the hang of it and can do it quickly, you’ll have a fine, strong harness that should last indefinitely.

Well i ordered a small size for my 10kg cockapoo who has a 20.5″ chest which is the size recommended by the seller, when it arrived it was far to small and nowhere near big enough to fit my dog even though the sizing said it would.
The harness looks very sturdy and so i am very disappointed that the size recommended does not fit and to add insult to injury they are charging me 3.99 to post it back to them even though it was not my fault that the size was wrong
. Wont re-order it again in case the medium doesn’t fit and i would then have to pay out a second 3.99 to send it back.
UPDATE- Well after complaining to Amazon they gave me the 3.99 postage back and were very nice about it so i thought i would give ordering a medium size a go as i really liked the harness. Arrived today and have to say it fits my dog perfectly it is a fantastic sturdy car harness and also it has the benefit of being crash tested so gives me piece of mind. Glad i re ordered so just remember sizing is on the small size.

Works well but is very heavy for a small dog. It should be fine but my dog hates it and gets tangled up so I probably won’t be using it after all. Not the products fault and it is as described. Maybe if your dog likes a harness and sits up straight in the car you would be rating this five stars. Unfortunately that’s not my situation so the heaviness is an issue.

I opted for a ‘small’ but a Golden Retriever puppy probably needs a ‘medium’. It might soften up with use but for now, it’s all a bit stiff. I found the toggles that can be released from the harness a bit fiddly and I’m wondering when I actually try it on said puppy, he’s not going to sit long enough for me to fit him in! That said, it’s a sturdy piece of kit and from this I imagine it’ll do the trick. The material used seems strong and hard-wearing. I think the cost of the item reflects the importance of this kit and is worth spending. Keeping dog safe in his seat in the car is paramount. I probably won’t use it for walking just for use in the car for now before going onto a bigger size. FYI There’s a video on YouTube which shows you how to use the item which I found useful.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI saw a lot of reviews for this harness about it being used as primarily a dog seat belt, but I read in a blog about the effectiveness of this harness for dogs that are strong pullers on walks, and that is why I purchased it. I have two pitbull mixes, one 35 lbs and the other 50lbs, and they pull bad on walks. We have tried many different pull preventing harnesses that failed. This harness has completely changed that, the harness immediately corrects the dog when they go to pull and we have been able to even do loose leash walking after buying these. It is a great harness for big dogs who pull on walks, I was surprised at how well it worked in controlling that. The harnesses look nice and sturdy and the dogs appear comfortable in it, the only complaint is that the metal clips are a little odd but with practice not difficult to take on and off. I highly recommend this harness if you’re trying to decrease your dog pulling on the leash, it works great.

I bought this for my 65 lb. chocolate lab. It has held up well and the dog tolerates is well. She is high energy field/American Lab, and not the most patient dog in the world, but she is fine with this. I have used it as a harness on occasion. I have a background in restrain systems for humans so one thing that caught my attention was that this system has been tested. The dog is allowed to move around a but much for me, but that is a reasonable trade off. The quality of the webbing and the attach points are such that they can safely hold the dog in a forward collision, the only issue is that all the restraint is going to do is keep the dog in the back seat. That by itself is a big deal, but might not be enough. My dog accepts it as part of the deal to be able to come along in the truck. It keeps her in the back seat and out of my way.

Love it but more importantly so does my dog
importantly it’s crash tested unlike many others including the julius k9!

Adjusts easily with slide buckles but does move a bit so check it’s fit occasionally

Love how easily it goes on no fiddling about the buckles just pop through

Easy to clean, even when covered in mud, just wash under a warm tap with a soft ish brush for the stubborn bits hang up to dry job done

This is a quality, well made harness, with high-quality components.
The only improvements that I can imagine, would be models with bigger and bulkier harnesses.

Fitting instructions are a little confusing and I had to search for a few online videos to see how it is supposed to be connected to your vehicle’s seat-belt mechanism.

If you are not familiar with climbing gear harness connectors and how to adjust them, you should find some online videos, because they are more helpful than the written instructions supplied with this harness.

After a few months of non-use, I had to review the connection instructions, because it is not very intuitive, compared to previous harnesses that actually connected directly to a seat-belt connector.
By the way, THIS DOES NOT ‘PLUG-INTO’ your seatbelt connector!

I like the fact that it does not connect to your seatbelt buckle connector, this design is better for a dog, because it is attached to the STRAP(S) of a connected seat-belt, and it can still be used, even if all seatbelts are being used by people.
Your dog still gets to move around, but is still attached, with the added benefit of the seatbelt retractor’s ability to quickly lock into place when needed.

This product is ideal for my terrier who eats plastic fastenings as this harness has all metal fastenings. It is easy to put on/remove/adjust and appears comfortable. The harness loop means I can have 2 small dogs attached to one seatbelt or a dog can travel safely on a passenger’s lap. A lead can be attached to the harness eg at rest stops, meaning the harness doesn’t have to be removed if the dog leaves the car. Best of all, Kurgo crash tests so I have peace of mind that my dogs (six dogs in my family use Kurgo travel harnesses) are travelling safely

Love this harness, does just what I want. Took a little bit of working out the clips, thought I was going mad. But now it’s easy.
Can be used as a harness also. Comfortable for my dog, no chaffing. Ordered a size up but even that was too small, but ordered the next size and then sent the one I didn’t want back, no problem.
    Would recommend for sure.

I bought this because I wanted a car harness that was crash tested – most harnesses will just snap in a high impact situation. Some reviews say it failed the crash testing, but their website says this is a new updated version that passed. The harness itself is strong with very sturdy clips. The clips take a little longer to fasten than regular harnesses, but that is what makes the harness safe. My only complaint (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is that the straps while strong are a bit too thin to be comfortable, there is no padding and they dig in a bit under the arms. Maybe a bigger size would resolve some of that but not all of it. I don’t feel that it is a very comfortable harness and for that reason I am using it only in the car, not for regular walking. I would still absolutely recommend this – it might even safe the life of your pet and/or loved ones. Remember that in a crash where a dog is thrown forward, it will harm not only the dog but any people it hits on the way.

Like the sturdiness. Don’t like the nesting metal buckles. They are harder to close/open compared to plastic snap type connectors. As well the extra small is a bit on the small size. Measured both my small dogs and the harness won’t be fitting my one dog if she gains any weight at all. Measure carefully!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersLove this harness! Our terrier mix has a very narrow and deep chest, so finding a harness that fits has been a huge challenge. The way this one adjusts fits our pup perfectly! The dog who ran from every other harness at walk time now walks right up to me for this version and wags his tail! It’s great!

I’ve read complaints about the unique buckle type being a challenge, but have not experienced any problems beyond the first time I put it on my dog, and that was just because I was new to using it. Just insert on the side with words and take off by sliding down the wordless side. You’ll see what I mean when you hold it in your hand. Super easy! It takes a few seconds longer than a standard clicking buckle to attach, but it doesn’t chip your fingernails are pinch your fingers like the standard clip type. My elementary school kids agree that it’s easy to use, and are happy their dog walks right up to them at walk time.

    Definitely a 5 star product!

I’ve given it four stars because while the standard poodle tolerates it without moaning, it is very heavy and it must be a relief when I take it off!
It’s got front and back hooks for leads, a handle so they can be grabbed and is easily adjustable to accommodate grooms. There are a couple of places you can attach an ID to and it was recommended particularly for standard poodles. It doesn’t cut across their front legs as some others do. It’s extremely robust and well made.

The harness was surprisingly easy to put on, it takes about as long as a regular snap harness. You do have to be careful to make sure it’s pretty snug on your dog, because it doesn’t lock together, if your dog is really wiggly it comes undone. The carabiner makes it really easy to secure your dog in the car, but it can be difficult to get your dog unclipped (this might just be because my dog is so wiggly). My dog also tends to get himself all tangled in the seat belts as you can see in the picture. I don’t know if this makes it less effective, but he starts whining if he gets too tangled and it is annoying to try to untangle him to get him out of the car. These are annoying but this harness does keep him contained in the car and gives me peace of mind on our car trips. It is also a pretty good walking harness and seems very comfortable.

We bought this harness as the range of sizes was rather large and we had no idea how big our mixed breed rescue puppy would grow up to be. We have had this harness for 3 months now and our girl grew inside of it from 13 to 22kg.
We are very happy with our purchase and have gotten several positive comments as well. It’s a very solid piece which tightens a bit on the top when the dog pulls – which is great as she can’t get out of it this way. Our dog is quite scared of other dogs and people, so she has tried a few time to run away, but this harness keeps her secure with us.
The front-no-pull function unforuntately does not work very well for us. The front part is rather loose and it just moves the whole harness to the side of her body, turning it into a great toy to bite on right in front of her nose. It’s hard to describe but put simply: if you are looking for a no-pull harness, look somewhere else. Then again, on average it takes a dog about 1,5 years to learn to walk well on the leash, so we don’t really worry about her very few times of pulling and therefore don’t mind not having a great no-pull-front-buckle option.

Overall definitely recommend this harness! Especially for puppies!

Great harness - specifically for growing puppy!

Update: I spoke with the company at length about all the harnessed they sell. This harness is not for walking any real distance, it is primarily for car safety (and jumping out to potty). Would be great for a road trip. Was recommend the Journey for regular walks/hiking. This is a small family owned business and I received excellent customer service.

    Original review:
Ordered for hound mix puppy ~40 lbs who is being leash trained especially not to pull when there are lots of smells. She had a different front leash attachment harness that she did well on so I decided to give this one a try even though she’s not keen on having things go over her head (I figure I could train her into it).

Pros: High quality, lots of adjustment points, strong for car safety, comes with seatbelt latch, good price especially considering quality, front leash attachment.

Cons: Very heavy; all metal buckles would heat up in the SoCal sun and probably burn the dog; linking buckle closures (while likely very safe for car travel) awkward to attach during squirmish puppy phase.

Ultimately I’m returning this but am going to try out another couple harnesses in this brand.

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersMy first preference for having the dog travel in the car with us was to have her in a crate in the boot. However, she absolutely hates it and is always travel sick which makes going anywhere with her a nightmare, but she will happily sit on the back seat. So I started looking at car harnesses and quickly found out that most of them are cheap and cheerful and basically just a nod to the law, but actually do nothing to restrain your dog in the event of an accident. Seeing as I usually have at least one of my children in the car with me, I need them to be safe from a flying dog, and I’d really rather the dog was unharmed too. After a lot of reading online I decided on the Kurgo as it’s one of the few crash tested dog harnesses available in the uk, and it doesn’t cost a fortune.

It’s easy to fit, seems very well made and my dog is very happy wearing it. It is quite heavy thanks to the metal hardware which may be an issue with very small dogs, but my labrador puppy doesn’t seem to mind, even when we used it as a walking harness, and of course it’s the metal clips which give the harness it’s strength. A word of warning though – if it’s even slightly loose fitting, the dog can escape it so make sure it’s tight enough! She seems to have plenty of space to settle on the back seat when restrained, but not enough that she can try to jump in my toddler’s lap or try to get in the front of the car. Thankfully I’ve not needed to test the crash test claims but so far I’m happy.

I bought the medium which fits my 13kg dog very well. I did have an issue with the seller sending the wrong size and the ensuing marketplace returns palaver… I hadn’t realised that the medium was not sent by Amazon unlike the other sizes. However, we have the correct size now so it’s all good. If it wasn’t for the fact that the metal on the harness will rust if wet, I would probably ditch our regular waking harness and use this full time, I like it that much!

    Edit October 2020.
I’ve recently had to buy another Kurgo harness in large now my dog is 24kg. I had no hesitation in buying it again, and it has now completely replaced the regular walking harness. The metal clips didn’t rust although I expected them to, and the front lead attachment ring has helped a lot with the dog pulling. I now recommend this harness to everyone I know!

Once you get the hang of taking the harness on and off, it becomes quite easy. I have a small 13lb rat terrier mix. I have noticed that over time the straps do loosen so I need to adjust occasionally. The straps are also rather stiff and haven’t really molded to his body as much as I expected. The tether that comes with it is technically not crash rated, however I think maybe the carabiner is? Check the Kurgo website for details. They recommend connecting the caribiner directly to the seatbelt which I found incredibly restrictive for my dog. So I have the tether looped around itself on the chest strap of the seatbelt to give him more room. Probably not as safe but he is more comfortable. He does sometimes get twisted in the tether. I purchased the Kurgo swivel tether and found it to be too large for my dog. It did work better but not always. So I returned the swivel and I’m sticking with this included tether. Otherwise a great purchase and would recommend.

Fits my guy great even though he was kind of between 2 sizes. Keeps him from falling when I stop the car. He ya happy to get it on. The little buckled are a bit difficult to get in when he is wiggling but iverakk I’m very happy with it.
