In many respects, these mains powered lights are much more practical than their low voltage or solar powered equivalents, not only because they are more robust but also because the quality, consistency and brightness of the lights is much better. These aren’t bright by any stretch of the imagination however, they aren’t supposed to be – as ambient lighting, they give a lovely gentle glow, which illuminates the desired areas of your garden perfectly.
However, whilst I much prefer these to low voltage or solar powered lights, there is a downside and that is cost. As they are mains powered, the installation needs to be done properly, and that means armoured cable, which is buried to the correct depth, to ensure you don’t get a nasty surprise when you accidentally slice through the cable. This wouldn’t be a concern for low voltage or solar powered lights and so you have to weigh up the installation cost against the reliability and brightness of these lights.
They are designed to an IP66 rating which means they are fully water and dust proof and so you can be confident that they will withstand virtually any type of outdoor environment, other than full immersion in water. I would have preferred if the colour temperature had been a but warmer (3000K rather than 4000K) but that’s not a deal breaker in my book.
In summary, it’s a decent, well made light spike that provides a nice level of ambient lighting, but you need to be aware that they will be relatively costly to install (and please don’t think about taking short cuts on this as it could endanger your, or someone else’s, life)
his was very easy to install and worked really well by our front door as it actually had a better level of brightness than i had thought it would. really happy with it.
Came well packaged to prevent breakage in transit .
Really easy to install and it is great for pathways . We only have this installed for our pathway and it gives off enough brightness to illuminate the whole pathway .
Please note this is not solar panel
This item arrived safe and well packaged.
This is a lovely little LED spot light. It is mounted on a spike, so can be positioned anywhere in the garden. You can swivel it around to point in any direction, left to right and up and down.
The light is not ridiculously bright like a security light. It is more of an atmospheric glow, perfect for lighting up a tree or a wall etc.
I highly recommend this product.
This spike light does give a good effect and lights up my plants nicely. Looking forward to using it on warm summer evenings. The down-side is that it doesn’t come with a plug, instead it needs to be wired into an outdoor electrical supply. This isn’t a great problem for us as we wired it into the electrical supply for our pond. I can understand the manufacturers not wanting to put a plug on this because some people would then hook it up to an extension lead or leave the plug out in the rain – either way, the risk of electrocution would be high. However, if you have an external supply that you can wire this into, then there is a good chance that you also have external sockets. I know I have. Unless you are very sure you know what you are doing you should never install electrical appliances yourself but should get a qualified electrician to do the job for you. So for many people this could end up being a very expensive job and the light isn’t sufficiently large or spectacular to warrant paying out for installation.
This isn’t really a standalone light that you would buy on it’s own to add brightness to your garden: it needs to be wired up to the mains, and if you’re going to that hassle (this comes with a metre length cable with loose wires so it’s a big job to install) you’re likely to be installing several lights as part of a bigger lighting design. As a standalone light, the effort required to install this makes it a two star product, but it you have the expertise at hand to get this integrated into your garden lighting it has some nice features including an adjustable head, is completely weather proof and has a quality build, all for quite a reasonable price.
Just be mindful that this is not easy to install on it’s own, it’s not solar powered or battery operated. It doesn’t even come with a plug so will need a bit of work to get it up and running for you.
I didn’t realise it was a wired light, thought it was solar powered, my mistake.
It’s a well made light – good quality and fairly heavy weight. I can’t currently say how well it works when wired in, but will report back if I get around to setting that up.
Nicely made led light with spike which is quite bright. The only thing negative is that the 3 wires are not long enough to play around with so it can be connected to a power terminal.
I also made the mistake of not reading the full description (it’s mains powered) so I cannot take off any stars for my mistake.
Anyway, for it’s intended purpose it’s ideal. An experienced electrician will have no issues with the short 1m length of flex but this could cause an issue otherwise. The light housing itself is small, sturdy, well coated, and a good weight. If you require a mains powered small inconspicuous LED directional spot, this would make a great choice.
The quality of this light is great, its nice and compact and I like the design of it. It gives off a nice and bright warm white light which can be aimed up or down to create a nice effect. Although it doesn’t mention it in the title it does says its AC powered in the description and that it comes pre-wired with 1 metre of cable although this is really short and you can barely do anything with it, why Luceco didn’t provide a longer cable I don’t know but I had to extend the cable to be able to use it anywhere in my garden.
Everything on the light including the spike is made from metal, everything about it is well made and sealed properly. The spike can be detached from the light bracket which means you could mount it on the side of a wall or fence if you wanted to. I placed mine in front of the shed just to see what it looks like and I was quite happy with it, if you had a feature wall or trellis it would look excellent casting upwards especially with several of them.
Overall, apart from the cable which is way to short the light is pretty decent, its been on for several hours a night for the last few days now and the hottest it gets is just warm to the touch. Its only LED so doesn’t take much energy to run several of them and it can really add to the atmosphere of your garden. I much prefer powered lights as most solar lights are hit and miss and at least with mains powered ones the output is consistent for as long as you need so I’m happy to recommend this item.
