Was a bit of a punt as wasn’t sure if it would pass through the power to the external hard drive (doesn’t have an external power supply) but thought it a lot cheaper than buying another external SSD or buying a HUB. Worked and SSD appears in Finder so very pleased. One important point is that you can only use one adapter on each side of a MacBook. The USB C ports on the MacBook are too close for adjacent adapters.
