I really wanted to change and having hue lights around the house that was the final touch for the time we can spend outside. The whole little space of ours is now full of ambiance depending on our mood. Our humble flower bed has now all the lighting alternatives to look even better. Worth every penny
I’m a big fan of Philips Hue lights despite their price been higher than the average smart light. You can tell they are quality made and these outdoor lights are no exception. Easy to install and connect to the app. If I have one issue it’s the fact I have to buy a separate motion sensor rather than one being built in.
I’ve looked at the settings and although I can get the lights to turn on using geo fencing. they will stay on and not turn off after a few minutes unless I have a motion sensor as well.
If anyone knows any different please let me know.
The lamp provides ample light for a small garden in any colour. If white is selected then it can light a very large area and will cast a shadow perhaps 30-40m away. Installation is when replacing an existing wall light by wiring live, neutral and earth to a LBI easily removable terminal block. Presumably, the reviewers who found wiring a hassle didn’t remove the block (it just slides off and on). If your fitting it solo then it may be necessary to hang the light on the wires very briefly whilst you fetch the retaining screws but it isn’t so heavy this would risk damage. The animations on the Hue app are awesome and create a whole new feel to the garden at night. I have it automated through Apple Home and this works really well with existing scenes. This is a quality piece of kit which, if my previous experience with Hue is anything to go by, will provide much enjoyment for a long time.
Easy to install, well built and brighter than I need. Works well with Philips hue app and Apple Home. Just ordered the Philips hue outdoor sensor to complete my security setup. Definitely recommend this light.
We have been long term users of Philips Hue Lighting and whilst it is significantly more expensive, especially for colour, the functionality and flexibility, plus the overall quality really makes it worth while. We bought a number of these lights to both replace existing floodlights and in a couple of new areas and we are very pleased.
If you want them to function as security floodlights then you can pair them with a number of devices to act as motion sensors – the Philips Hue ones being the obvious choice, however they can quite happily function with other options via your home automation system of choice. The key thing here is that you can choose to have a very bright full strength floodlight feel to them, or you can have a much warmer white light or obviously a whole range of colours too. We actually have ours set up for a much more ‘friendly’ warm white at a lower intensity during the evening, switching to a much more security style bright white at night if something is detected.
In terms of the actual assembly, they are a good quality, although the IP rating is definitely not as good as it could be, they would need to be in a relatively sheltered location and I would worry if they were in an exposed location that was likely to see a lot of wind and rain. Personally, I like the frosted feel of the cover and that unlike most security floodlights, the LEDs aren’t openly exposed. Likely also a design choice given the mix of colour options.
Not to the not so good stuff. These are a nightmare to actually put up – I was two storeys up a ladder, holding the unit to the wall fumbling with a tiny little grub screw that was going in to a hole I couldn’t see that if I let go would only be held by the electrical wiring. This is a major fail. Philips needs to provide some kind of clip or catch mechanism that will hold the unit whilst the screws go in to then keep it in place. This is something that other suppliers do as a matter of course.
As others have noted too, the cable entry is via the rear only which makes a massive assumption about how they will be installed – although to be fair that appears standard across the Philips outdoor range. If you will be using a cable that is running along a wall or coming in from another angle like I was mostly, I used the following ABS spacers to lift the unit off the wall by a centimetre or so to allow the cable to come in via the rear. Obviously I then just used slightly longer screws than those provided, but I am delighted with the result, very secure and much easier. I also added a blob of silicone to where the cable came in given it was slightly more exposed.

Overall, very happy and so far they have been very effective.
Great security light and also when sitting outside house in the evenings.
Looks great and light is OK. If you’re looking for something really really bright this isn’t for you, however if you just need something to light an area well rather than land an airplane, this does the job.
Easy to fit. The white light is bright enough to light up the whole garden and the colours are a good mood setting
Failed shortly after installation, currently attempting to get warranty support from Philips, have just sent them proof of purchase for the THIRD time wating to see what happens.
Will revise review if I get a response.
Update
I’ve now had response from Philips warranty department and they have sent me a replacement Hue outdoor flood lamp which I’ve installed. Whilst the first unit disappointed I remain a big fan of Hue lights. Hoping I was just unlucky with the first unit, as the issue is now resolved star rating revised.
Great addition to our Philips Hue collection. When connected via the Hue motion sensors gives great flexibility in how it’s triggered.
For our use the multicolour feature is of no value, shame they don’t do a cheaper white light only version.
Easy to install, light unit backing has 3 screw locations. If fixing to a wall you’ll need to drill the wall to get the wire inside the building to a power source. Grommet provided in box to be cut to suit cable. There appears to be no side exit wire option, so to do that I would imagine you’d have to make your own access in the side of the lamp holder and also the lamp wire box itself. Not an issue for me but useful to know if you have external wire to feed the lamp.
Once fitted, and once the outdoor sensor was fitted it was easy to sync with the Hue hub and program the light to my requirements.
For brightness, using the whitest setting I could create, this is not bad for an LED lamp with the features it provides, but is certainly no brighter than a smaller type LED security lamp you can buy cheaply from most DIY chains. It still illuminates the garden ok but is not a security lamp ie for a full garden bright illumination. The endless choice of colours are great, and will make sitting outside in the summer a nicer experience for certain. The options for programming the lamo is the same as for all hue lights using the App. The Outdoor Motion Sensor provides settings for various sensitivities & variable daylight brightness sensing, which allows full control over when to turn the lamp on. Great for security as you can get the sensor to turn on an indoor hue light to a set colour for example if movement is sensed outside.
Great lamp for garden atmosphere, general use at night, and the motion sensor beats any other sensor for programmability for security & usefeulness.

This is an odd product I have here. I actually quite like it, does the job I need it to and so far has been reliable. However, the price of it is hard to swallow. It is reasonably bright in white mode, although the light is diffused so lights a nice big area and isn’t as harsh as a normal floodlight, which is what I was looking for. Colour modes are nice but won’t really light a garden effectively but nice to have for mood lighting. Would I recommend this to someone as a floodlight, probably not, unless …. they have the full smart home.
As this is Hue, it ties in nicely with my HomeKit setup. I have cameras which are programmed to control this light in the night so it comes on when they need it, it automatically comes on at sunset and off at sunrise and I have manual override at any point too. This is where the light comes into it’s own, works well via the Hue bridge ie is fast and reliable plus the light can be varied by app etc.
Installation is a little fiddly as it looked like it is designed to replace an existing floodlight which is flush against a wall and fed straight from the back. I made a small stand off to get the cable in behind but so far it has been fine. It connected into the smart home in seconds and no bother to set up that way.
There are better floodlights for the price but if you’re after control, then this is probably the best there is. Unfortunately, Hue prices are a little steep but I struggled to find an alternative.
It’s easy to install and connect to the hub. However it’s less bright than I thought.

Brilliant. Love the different shades and ambiance. Easy to control in the garden from my Alexa device
Love our new flood light for the back garden. Easily installed and just the right ambience. So practical to be able to adjust the colours/timings etc from the app.

Another nice product from the Hue range – installed and worked exactly as advertised and integrated very well with the rest of my Hue system. Powerful light that suits my needs very well. Pricey – but you get what you pay for.

Wow these are bright (or can be). They also look really good.
Love it, can’t wait to use its colours and power when it comes to the darker nights or garden parties
The back case has 3 screw holes instead of 4, together with the rear cable entry it can make it nearly impossible to set flush against the wall. Absence of a motion sensor a bit of a letdown in this price class.

Easy to install, great Philips Hue product to add to existing range. Could be a little brighter when needed as a security light.
I replaced an existing flood light so I found this really easily to install, the white concentrate light etc is very bright but colours not so bright, does everything I want, works a treat with motion sensor I bought separately and can add other lights in the hue range to sensor too

Great product, easy to install.. would of given 5 stars if it came with the wall fittings.
Definitely worth the money. 1 tip when setting up. Make sure you turn all your other lights off if they are hue bulbs as the repeaters can overload causing the app to say server issue.

Has to be rear cable entry which is a pity as in certain scenarios would be a pain. The unit is beautifully engineered however unlike mist rubbish you buy . Colours are great and integrated perfectly into my hue system . Very bright for the wattage particularly in the white spectrum.

Nice and easy to fit, feels solid enough for build quality and easily fits into the rest of hue ecosystem. A little overpriced at full price but regular discounts and bundles make it more worth while.
I have been slowly changing all my lights and whilst this is expensive its really made a huge difference in our garden and now when we take the dog out in the dark we can see what we are doing.

Awesome, use it near to our hot tub, sets the mood and is great fun to change colours to suit.
Great Hue light to add to the range. Our garden is about 30ft long and the light is bright enough. Plus the colours add some style and flair. Motion sensor not fully set up and running yet but from initial inspection looks the business. Style might not be everyone’s taste but it’s clean and works well

A few things could be improved. As other buyers have mentioned the bracket on the spotlight has been moulded just off straight – annoying to have a wonky light but not so noticeable when mounted high. Also cable entry is from the back only – side entry would be good addition.
All that aside I now have a funky pink garden or blue or whatever. It gives off a nice diffused light that’s not dazzling on the eyes.

Has with all of the Phillips hue range
Top quality
Great in my back garde
Very bright light. Covers our front garden very well. Paired with the outdoor sensor is the way to go. It is a premium brand but works very well.
Works really well,, v.simple to install, maybe not quite as weapons grade bright as old style security lamps but pretty decent and all the Hue features.
Great product again from Phillips Hue, easy to install and bright enough to light the area we needed. Highly recommended.
Lovely light. The electrician who fitted it said how nice the fixings and positioning was, and how well made it was. Control it all via Alexa (via the Hue hub), and works grea
Love this light, covers a large area, was good for the money and didn’t seem to difficult to set up.
I really like this product. Great toy. Very good light for the area. Don’t forget you need a Hue hub! Only limitation is you need to make sure your wifi signal can reach the Hue hub and then your hue hub can reach your light. Once this achieved then the light is great fu

Perhaps a little better than expected with tones of white but a little less powerful than I’d have liked with colours.
As far as ‘flood lights’ go, this actually looks very nice. It sits there, smiling it’s light down on you and works a treat in terms of nice light distribution. The well made diffuser is vasty better than the cheap, high wattage, flood lights that you seen on cheap houses that hurt your eyes and cast impenetrable shadows over everything. This lights up things in a usable and sensible way.
My only tiny gripe; the cable is rear entry only. This makes for a very neat and secure installation – if you can get the cable through a wall. Else you’ll have to mount on a box/plate or channel the wall out to make room for the cable. Otherwise, I really like this.
Note this is just the light and you’ll need both the Hue Bridge and an outdoor sensor to make this into a security light.

The motion sensor is sold separately but you can have it anywhere in the garden so it triggers light as soon as its walked past. You can also have more than one and you just sync them via the hue app. The sensor is definitely worth the purchase and only takes batteries so no hard wiring.
Purchased these for outside side garden, after sunset we have no street lighting so our garden is very dark. They were dead easy to put up. The instructions are good and very informative But common sense overrides the instructions because they’re that easy to put up. I have the Philips hue hub so I have linked these up to our google smart home network and a perfect addition to our forever growing Philips hue smart bulbs.
I opted to get the colour ambience flood lights to bring mood and atmosphere to the garden. Your instantly transformed into a warm glow with a few short words or via the Philips hue app or the google home app. You can set it so they are on from sunset to sunrise which might be good for those who have cctv and limited lighting in their garden. Giving all round protection.
I’m in the process of linking these to my Yale smart home alarm so should my home
Alarm go off these would flash red outside my house.
I know they’re seem a bit expensive but having Philips hue already you know what your purchasing and quality products they are. Our plug socket is above our kitchen cupboards and we can now leave this on and switch it on and off via google or the app. No more climbing on the chairs.
Definitely one of my more sensible purchases

Excellent light with versatile colour changing option. However it is designed for cable entry at the rear. It would be better if the side was available also.
Not bright enough generally, but Hue system with colours, connection to hub, remote controlling works flawless.
I bought this when there was an offer on, so didn’t pay full price. I’m waiting for another offer so I can get another one, so you might have already guessed that I like it. Installation is simple and the base is plenty strong enough to last. You’re advised to put some silicone around the back and where the cable enters, even though there’s a gland there, which I did. Then it’s a case of attaching the lamp to the cable, offering it up to the base and securing it in place with a couple of set-screws (maybe one or two – I forget). Mine’s on a switched spur, which is necessary these days, and gives you a switch to disable it if needed.
Once it was hooked up the Hue hub I could control it from my phone or through Alexa or Google, but if you want it to double as a security light you need to also purchase a Hue external sensor, which will set you back another 40+ notes. bear that in mind when comparing costs, as it’s already an expensive item. It takes a bit of fiddling with the settings on the sensor to get it to work how you want it, but mine now ignores cats and dogs most of the time, but picks up humans pretty quickly. I also put a Hue dimmer on the reveal of the window by the back door to give a bit more immediate control over the on/off, especially as my son’s at that age where he’s a bit scared of the dark.
The range of colours in this big panel light are excellent, just like the indoor lights. If you’re using your voice to activate them, you can also “set patio blue 100%” or any variation of well-known colours and percentages. When you ask for black however, you get white. If I were Hue, I’d have just switched off at that point. 🙂
Conclusion. Expensive, useful, easy to fit if you already have wires, and fun to play with. Remember you need a separate sensor and see if you can catch it out by asking for unusual colours.

Excellent lights for our garden which work great with the outdoor motion sensor. Only docking a star as they are a tad expensive like all Hue lights.
Bought this to replace an old broken light. I’d read a lot about it before hand, and my only real concerns in the end were the price and the brightness, but all the Philips Hue products are a little pricey.
It’s a defused light, unlike my previous one. The ability to change the colours will probably not get used much, but better to have and not use it. Brightness wise, it’s about what I expected I think, I generally have it at about 60%. I would say it’s bright enough for what I need. Don’t expect this to light up a 100′ garden though.
Quality wise it’s good. Feels sturdy even though the base it screws to is plastic.
As others have said, the wire is routed through the rear and not the side, but due to where I’ve fitted it I’ve been able to make a channel in the wall to accommodate this, so no drama.
Set up was easy through the app, I use other apps as well and they were easy too.
Overall very happy.

Great looking outdoor light, looking forward to summers evenings on the patio with this and the ability to change the colours, it is expensive and I am hoping I will see durability and length of life to justify the cost.
Very very bright. Put on the wall of the garage. Not sure your neighbours will like you when you put it on 100% but that is what’s the dimmer is used fo
We had old halogen floodlights in our garden that were consuming 500W. Since we had installed a Hue system with internal and external LED lighting over the last year, integrated with our Alexa devices, we decided to replace the old halogens with two of the Philips floodlights. They are not as bright as the halogens they replaced but easily bright enough for our garden, with the benefits of much lower energy costs and the ability to fine-tune the lighting to whatever shade of white or any colour one would wish; the halogens were always too stark in their glare whereas the Hue floodlights are more acceptable to the eye. They also look great, despite being mostly made from plastic, whereas the halogens were almost entirely metal (and hence recyclable!).
They have two big design faults: the cable entry is right through the middle of the back of the light fitting so you cannot lead the cable in along the wall of your house of from under the eaves; also the screws securing the fitting to its bracket are tiny and have to be screwed in vertically from above and below. That makes them very awkward to fit without dropping them to the ground many metres below, never to be found. Clearly Philips did not try fitting these lights themselves high up a wall, whilst standing on a ladder!
That said, they connected to our Philips Hue Hub in seconds and were added to our system via the Hue app on a smartphone. After that, our Alexa system detected them and added them to the rest of our Alexa and Hue devices via the Hue skill.
Note that these floodlights are mains-powered, unlike the other Hue outdoor lights, and therefore need to be installed and certified by a qualified electrician.

Honestly, if you have Hue lighting in your home and havent yet ventured outside with it, just do it! Ive got this discreet and attractive light angled to illuminate my patio and it really lights up the whole garden so that I can let the dogs out at night and not lose them, but also can be adjusted to give a warm glow for evening drinks. Its great. It was easy to fit (the wiring was already in situ) and worked instantly with my Hue hub. I’m looking at more outside models now.
Another addition to my hue family. Light seems well made and looks smart. Colours are bright and vivid. Lights up my garden well at night. Easy to install. Overall I am happy with the outdoor light. Much better than the old halogen types. Just wish Philips would price these products a little more reasonably.

Build quality was much better than I expected. Over priced as is all the hue lighting in my opinion.Bought to replace halogen floodlight in garden. Plenty of power. A great addition to my hue home lighting. I’m no electrician but this was a very simple install.
Purchased for use at the back of the house. Do an excellent job when paired with the outdoor motion sensor. I like the fact that they can be swivelled from side to side and tilted up and down.
They are only just bright enough for me, but thats because we have a large garden and I am used to full floodlights.

first, the advice given in these comments is essential, namely rig the light up before fitting, so that the software can update, and then you won’t be kept waiting once fitted to see if it is working or not.
Second, the brightness is wonderful, and of course you can dim it.

OK, so due to positioning I cheated and had mine put up by a professioanal electrician (needed to be placed where we had no easy access to existing electrics) so that added to the cost of my set-up quite a lot. However, once up I’m really chuffed with this. Ours lights our patio. It’s paired with the outdoor sensor, so acts as both a security light – but also a hands free aid when we go out to carry stuff from the kitchen to the bins (a god-send!) – it’s plenty bright enough to floodlight our patio. Obviously, though being hue, when bright flood light isn’t appropriate (BBQ- or boozy evenings on the Patio) you can use the app and go for whatever colour lighting and ambience suits the mood. Can add a bit of a wow factor the property. We’re already fully bought into the hue system – if you’re not there may be more cost effective alternatives that achieve the same result more economically, but honestly – this one was a home run for our needs and very aesthetically pleasing too. Brilliant for lighting any of a patio, drive or porch – particularly when paired with the outdoor motion sensor. Good kit!
I tried some cheap floodlights but then noticed that Phillips finally released a Hue floodlight and got one as the cheap ones were very weak and I like Hue indoor lighting.
Pros:
– very bright; on white it lights my garden well enough that I can read by the light in the far corner at midnight
– smart control and wide range of colours, so I can use the app / hook it up to Alexa / add a dimmer or motion detection peripheral
Cons:
– 5-10x more expensive than the other floodlights I tried
– Only rated IP44; good enough to use outdoors but other floodlights I’ve seen are rated IP67 or bette

I love the choice of colours although anything other than warm-ups bright light are a little dim
Great item and value for money. In comparison to other floodlights this seems an expensive option, but, with the technology in Phillips hue it’s a good investment due to Length of life the device lats. Also very easy installation and fantastic smart home integration. The mood lighting is fantastic being able to change the outside colour to suit any situation on mood. Great for BBQ/Parties in the summer and those dark winder nights when it pitch Black in my garden.
We are really pleased with this light, we bought another light for the back garden but it was really small space for the wires inside and my husband found it s nightmare to fit and gave up in the end so I was wary of getting this one but it was much easier to fit. We’ve only really dipped into the world of smart technology so can’t really embrace all the clever things this can do. The normal light switch turns it off and on with just a white light which is good and bright, lights up the whole garden but not too harsh. If you want to play around with colours then you need to use the Phillips Hue app which is easy to connect to and fun to play around with. Once the initial novelty has worn off, we’ve tended to just to just leave it on white, it defaults back to white when you switch it off. I hope we will remember about it in the summer when we are actually sitting out in the evening as I think it will make a lovely ambience.
Back in 2017, I decided I would try out the Philips Hue system by replacing the six halogen GU10 bulbs in my lounge with Philips Hue LED White and Colour Ambience equivalents. Without going into huge amounts of detail, I was so impressed with the features (dimming, colour changing ability, voice control, independent control of bulbs, remote operation etc) that within a month, I had replaced every bulb in my house with Philips Hue bulbs (a total of 36 bulbs)! Accordingly, it’s probably fair to say that I’m a huge fan of Philips Hue.
Over the last year, the range of Philips Hue lights has been expanded significantly and in 2018 alone, there was the release of the Philips Hue Play Light Bars (which I use behind my TV for ambient lighting) and a further range of outdoor lights, including this White and Colour Ambience LED Discover Garden Floodlight.
In respect of the light fitting, I have to admit that it’s not as sleek and refined as many other garden floodlights however, I have to remember that their primary purpose is to provide light, whereas the primary purpose of this product is to provide ambience. Accordingly, whilst the black metal frame and white plastic cover which protects the lighting unit can certainly not be described as discrete, it is something I can live with for the impressive results at night. As far as first impressions go, it feels very robust, both in terms of the weight of the entire lantern but also in the thickness of the plastic cover, which should hopefully last the lifetime of the lantern with ease (rated at 25 years, albeit, if you use it for an average of 12 hours a day i.e. on at sunset and off at sunrise, it is only expected to last for 5.7 years).
This particular Philips Hue lantern is different from many of the other products which I have had the privilege of trying out, in the sense that the “bulb” in this lantern is actually LEDs printed onto a circuit board and thus, is non replaceable. Accordingly, once the lighting unit fails, there is virtually no alternative but to replace the entire lantern. This might seem quite wasteful and indicative of our throwaway society however, it has enabled Philips to manufacture Philips Hue products which are significantly brighter than the alternatives which have replaceable bulbs (2,300 lumens compared to 806 lumens).
Being a floodlight, the lighting beam is quite directional and so the position of the lantern can be changed so that the light is being pointed in the direction it is required. The twist mechanism, which needs a hex (or allen) key to adjust, allows the floodlight to be moved in both the horizontal and vertical planes. In the horizontal plane, the floodlight can be rotated through just over 90 degrees i.e. 45 degrees to the left and 45 degrees to the right. In the vertical plain, the floodlight can also be rotated through just over 90 degrees however, this is limited to the floodlight being pointed out, directly perpendicular to the wall of your house, or down, directly parallel to the wall of your house (or anything in between). It is therefore not designed for being used as an uplighter i.e. affixed to a low wall and pointed upwards (which is probably not unexpected).
The lantern is very easy to fit, requiring only two screws and rawl plugs (not supplied) to fit to the outside wall and then fitting the power cable into the supplied connector block. Anyone who is reasonably confident with DIY should be able to fit within an hour, probably less for an experienced electrician.
That brings me on to the smart features of the lantern. In order to use the smart features, you will also need a Philips Hue Bridge , which needs to be purchased separately. Without the bridge, the lantern will simply operate in the same way as any other light i.e. turn on and off with the switch on the wall, which would then defeat the purpose of purchasing this kit!
Once the Philips Hue Bridge has been connected to your internet router, the lantern is very easy to connect into the Philips Hue system – download the Philips Hue app (if you don’t already have it) on any iOS or Android phone, search for new Philips Hue bulbs and the system will do the rest. Once it is connected, the smart features are ready to use and from my perspective, the most useful feature is the ability for it to turn on automatically, when you arrive home. This operates by entering your home address into the app and when your phone’s GPS detects that you are close to home, you can set the app up so that it turns the light on (either at any time of the day, or between sunset and sunrise).
Other useful features are the ability to dim the bulb using your phone (or Google Home/Alexa), set routines for the light to turn on and off at certain times, change the colour of the lantern to one of 16 million different colours, or set a timer for the light to turn off after a certain period of time.
Overall, I love this kit – both the style of the light fitting and the smart features, so why not give it a try? I appreciate that the Philips Hue system might be very expensive however, in my opinion, the smart features are invaluable and having adopted the Philips Hue system, I wouldn’t consider going back to basic bulbs.
I replaced my standard IR Sensor lamp on the rear of my house with this, at present I can;t automatically turn it on of off as I’m about to order the Outdoor Hue Sensor to control it, however using the Hue App or Alexa is just as good right now. To be honest my old one used to come on easier for my next door neighbour than it did for me so it’s easily saving me money by not only being LED but having me determine when it comes on and goes off.
With the fact that Hue are huge player with external companies such as IFTTT I have now configured it that ALL of my Hue lights inside the house and outside will Flash (and flat red if it’s a colour ambience bulb) when my smart house alarm is triggered. This allows you to take home protection to the next level. Not only is there a loud siren but a house flashing and glowing red in the street is sure to make itself known to others where the issue is.
I did have to modify where the wall was drilled when I took the old one off the wall, I simply flipped all the fuses in the fuse box just in case someone had wired it to a ring main different to that of what it should be on, removed the old one, drilled the we all where required, connected the appropriate cables to the old style UK wiring colours and with a little twiddling of the Hue light fixings it was all done. Now Alexa does the hard work of turning it on and off as it’s effectively always on because where it is located is not on a light switch as such.
Another good way to use the smart technology of Hue is to configure it to come on when a member of home comes home, that is if it’s at the front of your house, simply use Life360 and when it senses you’re about to arrive it will put the lights on for you, when you leave home have it turn all of them off to make sure you’re not wasting money :0) Been using Hue for 18 months and I’m a complete convert.
Simplicity of installing, quality of the product and support from Philips is second to none.
Up until now, Philips Hue has been very much an indoor thing, with the usual enemies of water and electricity ruling out anything but the portable lights. Fortunately these days are over, as an extensive weatherproof range has arrived.
Now one of the great advantages of some of the previous Philips Hue range was the ease of installation – bulbs could be easily retrofitted into existing lamps or items just plugged in. Unfortunately with these, things aren’t so easy – like any brand new outdoor light installation it would require running cables while replacing an old one it needs wiring – albeit simply replacing the three cables into the back of the unit. A bracket is provided for wall mounting but this also is somewhat involved.
Once you’ve got through this installation though, set up is straightforward – as the Hue app recognises the light almost immediately as long as you’re in range of your Hub that connects to a router, which in my experience wasn’t much of a problem. You can then control either through the app or various other smart phone devices and integrate with things including the motion sensor – which itself is now available in an outdoor edition. The range of colours is decent and while it’s not as bright as other halogen floodlights I’ve used, it’s still pretty decent.
Overall therefore if you’re looking to smarten up and bring light to the outside of your home, this is a genuinely good option. Check you’re comfortable with the installation, range and the fact it isn’t the brightest and you’ll be away.
This is a review of the Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance LED Discover Black Garden Floodlight, and not the other Philips lamps available on this Amazon page.
For anyone not familiar with Philips Hue, the longstanding system links smart lights to the internet using a Hue Hub which needs to be wired to your router. The system allows you, via the iOS and Android app, to control Hue lights from anywhere in the world, including at home. You can set routines – so a light turns on a 6pm and off at 8pm, for example, or that an outside light turns on at dusk and off and dawn. The Hue system can be linked to other smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa – so you can ask Alex to turn lights on and off, set a brightness level, or chose a colour. It will also link to Samsung’s SmartThings which will allow, for example, a light to be turned on if there is no motion in the house within 10 minutes.
The Hue range has expanded dramatically from an initial range of screw-fitting full-sized light bulbs and GU10 halogen replacements. Now there are a wide variety of bulbs but also light fittings including the lantern here. All Hue installations are dimmable, and use LED technology. There’s a choice of simple white, tuneable white (from a warm light similar to old style incandescent bulbs), and colour bulbs although not all light fittings come with a full choice.
This model is one of the more advanced versions offered by Philips, something reflected in the rather high price. It’s a bit smaller than I expected and whilst it can be set to a bright white light we are not talking about the light intensity you’d get from a halogen floodlight. If you want that I’d look elsewhere. Nonetheless the area of the lamp holding the LEDs is quite large and lights a fair area well. The angle of the LED panel can be adjusted to suit the installation situation. This model is the most basic version about although the bulk of the light is made of black metal. You’ll need to have a similar existing wall fitting or get an electrician in to install the unit although Philips provide pretty comprehensive instructions.
In use the system linked easily to my existing Hue system and performs as expected. It looks quite good but I think some people will not like the modernist take. You might have an issue though if you position this outside light a long way away from your WiFi network. You need the Hue hub to link to the lamp for it to work correctly.
Hue is my preferred smart home lighting system. It’s been about for a long time and is likely to be around in the future. It is worth noting that you will need to buy a Hue Hub if you don’t already have one which costs up to 50. You should also remember that the LED lighting system is not replaceable – you can’t simply replace the bulb. However, the likely lifetime is up to 20 years. Again, for a non-replaceable light the cost grates a little.
Overall though this is a welcome addition to the Hue range, worth four stars.
This has replaced an existing non-Hue Philips outdoor light which itself was an excellent product and for which I gave a 5* review. This is even better since I can use Alexa and the Hue app to schedule and control the light rather than use motion detection. For where it is, I prefer that. However, I think I will be buying the new Hue external motion sensor to operate the light, and my other outside Hue lights. That seems to me it would make a really top class security set-up as I could then activate both this and selected indoor lights automatically when someone approaches my house.
