Hue is probably the best solution for a novice to advanced user. Devices are easy to add. There are some annoying gaps in logic with the standard hue app but there are 3rd party apps that get round that. All4hue and hue essentials being some available.

What can I say? I came from Wemo and man Hue is at an entirely different level of smart. Super easy to set up and integrates so well with Google home, also works out of the box and the app is SOOOOO much better and more reliable than the Wemo app… Besides you can do IFTTT with them as well, I have now set up 12 remotes around the house and 40 GU10, B22 and E27 bulbs everywhere. Nice job Philiips!

Actually really happy with the purchase. Only real complaint was the Bridge box needed an update on first setup, says 10 minutes… many hours later it was still “installing”. Switched from the official Philips Hue app to Hue Essentials app which does the update much faster believe it or not.

Once setup it’s a great bit of kit. Main purpose of the purchase was to assist my Mother in her old age. I’ve set up a “Zone” from her bedroom to the bathroom which lights the way (Bedroom, Landing, Bathroom) at night. Another “Zone” from the Living room to her bedroom (Lounge, Stairway/Landing, Bedroom). Once she’s in bed all the lights in the “Zones” can be turned off remotely with the app on the phone.

The official Hue app I found pretty intuitive to use to set everything up, I know it would have confused my Mother though. Once configured for her, the home screen is very simple to understand and use. It shows all rooms and Zones you’ve created, whether the lights are on or off and you can toggle/adjust them easily from the home screen.

I have paired some colour Innr bulbs to the Hue Bridge. These are cheaper than the Philips branded ones but work essentially the same (please note Innr colour bulbs do NOT work to expand the lighting from Philips Ambilight TVs).

For a pack – when cheap – I think it is a good value especially to get a Hub (either primary for other BT bulbs or secondary if you need another hub if you are getting close to ~55 devices).

The bulbs are good for non-essential rooms, e.g. utility, garage, under-stairs, garden (since they are warm-white) – although I’d say not for hallways or bathrooms which primarily would use cold-white. For primary rooms the Ambiance or Colour I think are more appropriate.

But for a cheap pack to get a Hub I think it’s good value.

The product came really quickly. The packaging could’ve have been better as you can see from the images. The package contains; 2 x Philipps Hue 9W bulbs, 1 x Hue Bridge, 1 x Ethernet cable, 1 x Power supply with 2 and 3 pin plug adapters, warranty and installation booklet.

BE CAREFUL: These are the warm white bulbs but I still bought these because it’s good value getting the Hue Bridge included. Very easy to setup.

    How to setup:
    1. Plug in the bulb to your lamp and turn the light switch on
    2. Plug in the Hue Bridge to the mains power and to your wifi router
    3. Download the Hue app on your mobile phone
    4. There will be a mandatory update for the Hue Bridge which will take around 5-10 minutes to complete
    5. Setup your lights using the Hue app or Apple HomeKit.

Great lights, bridge is a must!

I already had a Philips Hue lamp so tried to add the bridge and bulbs using my existing app (HUE BT). Using the HUE BT app failed to setup the bridge and bulbs. I wasted time & effort because the app appeared to offer this functionality. It was even half working but not properly.

Only when I realised that another app was required, called HUE that the setup was quick and easy. Now the bridge, bulbs and lamp are all working with Amazons ALEXA just as I want.

Would like to see a single app to setup & control ALL Philips Hue devices.

Great product if you can get the setup right.

I’m aware that there’s loads of cheaper options – however, the Philips system is well known for its quality and simplicity

It was working within half an hour of opening the box, and the setup was really simple – and matching it up with Apple HomeKit so I can also get Siri to run it….

I’m told the bulbs from Ikea also work with it – but the Ikea hub and software is a bit of a nightmare – so get this as the easy setup option… loads of good videos on YouTube to show you how to use it, and to add non philips bulbs

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought the hue bridge starter kit plus other bulbs and found it easy to set up. I downloaded the app which tells you what to do and connected the bridge to my tplink m9 wifi mesh system which is connected to my sky router, everything worked first time, you just need to plan room and location names, it also connected to Alexa, you just need to think about room names and zones, and the lamps remember their last setting so don’t come on full everytime you switch them on. Can’t stop buying bulbs now. A bit expensive but lights are much nicer and have more control. Most of the bulbs I have bought have been the ‘white ambient’ ones which are better than plain white even if a bit dearer. I do recommend these.

The kit was pretty easy to set up and everything worked like a dream. Which is always a pleasant surprise when it comes to home tech. I’ve given this 4 out of 5 because of the cost and because it is quite limited as a starter set. I would have like to have seen a variety of blubs, one screw one bayonet for example. But they were both screw. These also don’t work with a dimmer switch at the wall, unless I was doing something wrong (?!) so I could only put them in one standing lamp. On the plus side they give a nice light which is fade-able and incredibly easy to control.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUPDATE 2/2/20
We have had this system operational for over a week now and wow, everyone in the household loves it. All you can hear are the kids asking alexa to turn on lights, turn off lights, dim lights etc etc. It is so easy to use with the Phillips Hue App ( even more so than the alexa app ), so you can have total control whenver you want.
We have set arrival and departure settings and they all work and we have set alarms for the morning and all th elights we want turn on so they can get out of bed.
We are now in the process of conveting the rest of the house to hue bulbs. Honest opinion is get these ones instead of the cheaper less reliable ones. They are worth the money and are compatible with the apps, alexa and the bridge system which we bought at the same time. Perfect.

I ordered this pack in the evening and it arrived the next day with no hassle.
Arrived in a secure prime box and inside contained the phillips box. Insode were two bayonet white lamps and the bridge unit.
Installed the bridge unit first – you need to connect the ethernet cable ( provided ) into your hub and the other end into the bridge. The other lead is the power cable.
Once the three blue lights come on the system ( bridge ) has been recognised.
You can use the alexa app to configure, but i found the Philips Hue app both easier and much more pleasing to look at and easier to function around.

The unit was up and running within 5 minutes. I have just bought two additional lights ( pearl ) for a ratton lamp.

All lamps are now in a group and can be controlled as a group, individually, when I am out, or when I arrive home.

Perfect and will no doubt buy lots more to add to the system.

I have dropped stars on value for money as they are expensive, but after readng reviews on some of the cheaper ones, I decided to take the leap and buy the decent stuff, I have not regretted it in the slightest.

If you are going to do this and want a starter pack then this is the one you need. The bridge allows you at add more than 10 lights and it means you can control it when you are outside the house, set routines etc when you are away and control them when you are out.

Stuck in traffic, so switched on the lights via 4G and when I got home they were all on where I had asked. Great for piece of mind.

Now, I need 4 x G10 bulbs, but at the price they want they are are ging to have to wait for me to justify it.

Or I wait to see if they put them in the sale

This is my second Philips Hue product, the other is a Smart Plug that integrated seamlessly with this starter kit.

Installing these bulbs and the Hub was straightforward enough. You plug the hub into your WiFi router and the mains and it sits there permanently waiting for you to communicate over WiFi with your various Hue devices. This can be done over the Internet too if you grant the right permissions in the smartphone app.

The iOS Hue app has a load of features, some of which I’ve investigated slowly, such as setting schedules for things to be turned on and off without me having to be present.

Adding this pair of Smart Bulbs was easy – took them out of the box, didn’t read the instructions, screwed them in to an appropriate light fitting, opened the iPhone app, went to Settings > Light Setup > Add Light > Search, it found my bulbs and the best bit, the iPhone app presents you with a picture of a cat’s paw pressing the button on a hub, so I pressed the button on my hub and Bob was my uncle. Finally I added rooms to my home setup in the app and added the bulbs to the rooms.

So now when the light switches are turned on two of the bulbs in our house can be controlled from my phone, somewhat to my wife’s annoyance. But Philips have worked out the system such that if you turn the mains off and back on again the person standing at the light switch resets it to on. If I can convince my wife to install and use the iPhone app on her phone then I’m sure she’ll see the benefit of this system. Or maybe she won’t. And that’s the big question really – does remote control of a light really benefit you in some way? Well one advantage is that you can adjust the brightness of the bulbs and to a limited extent the white hue – or at least so the app tells me, in reality there’s not much difference in hues. And the brightness can go low but I’d prefer if it were able to go lower still.

By the way, I refuse to implement voice control with the various possible systems – if you’re willing to sacrifice your privacy with one of these then I imagine you could achieve more than we are in our home.

What I would say about the Philips Hue system is that it works really well. I’ve tried a bunch of cheap versions of these app-controlled products and they do not work as robustly. It’s nice to be able to trust that when your smartphone is telling you your light’s status that it is reporting it correctly and this is certainly not always the case with some of the cheaper competing products.

I love this especially having the ability to have alexa control the lights.
Scenes are good too when used with alexa/google.
So much you can do but cant help feeling getting at least 1 coloured bulb in the pack would be better since there is much more you can do with coloured bulbs.
The hub needs a directly wired network connection which something to note if like me you have already hard wired a lot of your house.
I’ve still yet to learn more of what can be achieved with the app but so far very impressed.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBought this because purchased other smart bulbs that kept losing the wifi and a bit of false economy really so, went for what is considered a product leader. Not disappointed so far, reliable, works well with other smart tech like Alexa, app great and easy to use….overall very happy. Gave a 4 because its just expensive! Will cost nearly 400 if I was to kit out all my bulbs with Phillip’s Hue. Cant fault the hub, excellent and I would suggest needed if your intention is to expand the.phillips range so cheaper to buy as a kit. Great product (s) though cant fault it so far.

While I’ve played with IoT devices quite a bit at home, when it comes to buying commercial products rather than building my own I’ve restricted myself to smart WiFi plugs until now – this is my first foray into lightbulbs and I was pleasantly surprised. The Phillips Hue White lighting starter kit contains a pair of white bulbs and a Hue hub. The box contains everything you need and the contents was well packed to protect everything with minimal packaging.

The hub requires a mains electricity source and is connected to your network using an ethernet cable. The bulbs in this kit are E27 screw fit so you either need an E27 screw fit socket or you’ll need to change your fittings to match (legally this requires a qualified electrician). Phillips also sell B22 bayonet cap bulbs as well so this shouldn’t be necessary. The bulbs are LED of course and are quoted as having a 1000h lifespan (three years if on for an hour every day) although I’ve read of Hue bulbs lasting much longer than that.

I’m not going to describe the set-up as that seems a bit pointless (and may change). It is however is really straightforward and the hub will automatically find the bulbs provided that they are already turned on when you first power up the hub. Phillips provide a Hue app to control the bulbs and set up programmable schedules, and this can be used inside the house on your WiFI network or from anywhere in the world provided you have a connection to the internet and your home network is running.

The Hue hub supports up to 50 devices and Phillips have a range of Hue compatible bulbs and light fittings as well as switches, plugs and motion sensors. Plenty of room for expansion.

Personally my favourite feature beyond the obvious on/off/brightness is the home and away controls so you can make your house look occupied when away.

This is the perfect size starter set at a reasonable price and I thoroughly recommend it.

I am really fan of this type of technology. I have different apps at home that control lights, but all of then for small lamps, I didn’t have any to control the main lights of the house, so I thought is going to be brilliant.

I am worried in case the bulbs get broken, but I have to admit that Philips is a great brand and I am always happy with the quality of this products so I expected to long for years.

For me was not easy to set up, but I am not very good with technology, so in the end, I did and now I am very happy with the results.
The light is just perfect, you can set and schedules I love this is very practical because I set one on the entrance and now is no dark anymore so I am very grateful. I would like to have some more bulbs but in this pack are just two bulbs.

You have to connect the bridge to the router, ask for help if that is difficult when this part is done the rest for me was perfect. Just needs the app that is very easy to found.
If you have Alexa you can connect with then, this is very cool too. Good technology and the bulbs look resistant.

This is a great starter set if you’re new to smart lighting or considering getting started with Hue products as it contains a bridge which is the central control system for the whole range and will allow you to connect up other individual Hue products like bulbs and plugs as you add them to your house.

The bridge is very easy to set up, and can be directly connected to the wifi using a supplied cable. Once you download the corresponding app, you can control all devices that are connected to the bridge. There is a huge range of controls including scheduling lights to go on and off, and dimming lights. You can even set it to turn on the lights as you approach your house, because the app talks to the GPS on your phone to get your location.

This set also comes with two screw lightbulbs, we have bayonet fittings in our house so we had to purchase adaptors to make these fit so check your lightbulb type before buying. Once fitted and connected to the bridge, you can schedule the lights to come on/off, and also dim them which is great. You can continue to manually turn on/off the light at the main switch too.

Overall this is a great little starter set and will give you all the benefits of smart lighting in your home for a reasonable price. Recommended!

I have these in the bayonet fitting too so I knew it would be an easy setup but if this is your first time the instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow. They work well with Alexa and the hands free voice activation is working a treat. The away from home feature is handy on these dark night when we’re out a bit later for making the house appear occupied when it stars getting dark and also for welcoming us home. Bit pricey but everything you need is in the box (well, apart from Alexa, obv).

I’ve tried a few different smart lights brands but Philips Hue are still the best for the following reasons:
    Excellent light quality
    No buzzing noise or humming
    Good energy efficiency
    Great app
    Effortless integration
Works with Apple Home, Siri and Alexa
Can be used to set up automatic schedules via the app or geofencing – lights come on when you arrive home.
An array of accessories like wireless remotes and motion sensors

The only downside is the price – the Philips lights are generally more expensive than other brands but in my opinion they are worth it. I also have a smart home energy system (Hive) and the Philips bulbs are compatible with the Hive app.

This is a starter kit which means it comes with the latest Hue bridge which needs to be plugged into your router.

***Please note: the bulbs in the starter kits are already paired with the included Hue bridge so you won’t be able to automatically add them to another existing bridge. In the event that you are tempted to purchase a starter kit instead of separate bulbs (for instance when they are on special) dont worry, there is a work around. You can download the “Hue Lamp Finder” programme from Philips onto a computer connected to your home network which will allow you to link the bulbs to your existing system.

Both these bulbs (called “Hue White”) are warm white only but dimmable through the app. Other Hue bulbs are available which can change the type of white (from warm to cool- called “Hue White Ambience”) as well as change colour (“Hue White & Colour Ambience”).

This Philips Hue and really impressed me. It works straight away, the quality of the product and the light is fantastic, and the features of the app are outstanding.

135cm Cable length for the bridge, worth noting as it does need permanent DC power. In my flat my router is plugged in to the only socket, so I had to get an extension to be able to use this also.

The bridge itself is 9x9x2.5 cm, so it’s small enough to be hidden under the sofa or elsewhere. The bridge can connect multiple devices, so you can Smart home out your whole house.

Setup is incredibly easy. Plug the bridge in to power and your router with the supplied Ethernet cable. Install the app on your phone, click ‘search for bridge’, it finds it, and you’re essentially good to go. Connecting a bulb is equally as easy. It’s worth nothing that the one included with this set is a white bulb – it’s not the coloured. So it will do the full range of white from cool white to warm light, but you can’t get the colours like some other bulbs can. You will have to buy a separate philips hue bulb for that.

The only point where this might fail, to be honest, is if your internet broadband isn’t good, or it’s overloaded with devices. Not all broadband routers can actually handle how many devices we have on them nowadays, with computers, phones, smart home devices and gadgets. A lot get overloaded with signals and then either become unbearably slow, or stop connecting.

I do think Hue are still the best. Having used a lot of 3rd party bulbs, the connectivity and apps always let them down, and the light quality is never as good as the Philips range. The ability to connect them remotely when you’re out of the house is also a massive plus point over other bulbs, that absolutely need your wifi to be able to work. This for me is the most useful thing, as it means I don’t have to come back to a completely dark house, nor do I have to waste energy leaving any lights on. The wireless nature of them is also useful for turning off lights with your phone, or using Alexa or Google home to ask it to do so. Great if you’re lazy. But also great for anyone with mobility issues.

Again, another thing that stands the Philips Hue above the rest, is the ‘Routines’ programming. You can set times of day to have them turn on and off, which get programmed in to the bridge, meaning that even if you’re internet goes down or there’s a connectivity issue, these routines will still work like clockwork. The app will also use your location to determine when you’re coming home – so you can set it to turn on the light as you arrive home. I mean isn’t that incredible. It also will fade out if you set it for bedtime, and it’s so customisable – day by day, hour by hour. It can also be set to go off at random, so if you’re out it gives the impression that someone is in. It just works. And it’s brilliant.

I’ve tried a few voice-activated bulbs with limited success, hit and miss, and have usually had to resort to using a fairly flaky app. Not so the Philips Hue. This is a great starter kit, including the Bridge, that will let you connect up to 50 bulbs, so more than my house requirements.

Pretty easy to set-up, the app is intuitive and the Alexa integration worked perfectly. I particularly like the fact that you can set up an away-from-home mode for security, as well as control the lights from your phone, always useful to be able to turn on lights when arriving at home on a dark evening.

This version came with 2 x ES bulbs, (OK for some uplighters I have) but bayonet versions are also available.

I love this light from Philips.

    1.You can put a timer.
    2. Can set a time to wake up with less brightness in your eye.
    3. Can set it up to recognise you when you come or leave the place (switch on/off)

This lights makes your day easier.

I love all features this product offers. And easy easy to install.

It’s great to add some more Hue bulbs to my setup. They really are extremely easy to set up and use. Just get the bridge plugged into your router, download the app, and follow the instructions. You can then turn lights on and off, and dim them, with a couple of taps on your phone. If you’ve got a smart speaker setup, it’s even easier, as you can link them over and then just ask Alexa or whoever to turn the lights on. These Hue lights aren’t cheap compared to regular light bulbs, but I’ve got to say that I’ve never once regretted getting them. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI bought the original Hue bridge and added 4 colour lights to it in 2012, as they’re still going strong 7 years later I thought upgrading the bridge and adding a couple of new lights would be brilliant. Largely it is, but there have been some downsides that Philips could do with looking at.
If you’re new to Hue then this kit is perfect, just plug in the bridge, connect it to the back of your internet hub with the included wire and you’re good to go. The bridge will automatically find your two new included bulbs as long as they are on at the switch. Very very simple and I’ve no doubt their longevity will match my 2012 set.
However, this morning I had a complete functioning set of Hue lights. Several frustrating hours after swapping bridges I have two lights that still won’t work no matter what I do and what great internet advice I follow. The bridge just will not find them. I’ve reset everything, used the serial numbers, done a factory reset, updated everything etc. etc. But no, it refuses to find the two bulbs that worked this morning. It appears, according to one website, that I should have left my old bridge plugged in, attached the new one, and migrated using settings. I don’t know if this would’ve worked because there were absolutely no instructions to this effect in the box. So, if you’re updating your kit rather than starting out I would definitely have a good internet read before proceeding. With the in and out of the bulbs to get serial numbers etc. I also managed to damage the light fitting connection, which although old was ok this morning. So that’s obviously not Hue’s fault, but it capped off an annoying several hour fruitless task.
Please Philips, offer migration guidance in the box. Please address the consistency of finding bulbs.

I have earlier version of these lights some colour some white. They don’t work with Alexa but do work with my iPhone and are easily controlled room by room. These current white lights can be controlled by Alexa. Basically the same but with voice control. These are edison screw so I’ll have to buy a bayonet converter – cheap ones on Amazon. The lights so far after a few year of use are reliable and durable.

I have tried some dodgy light control systems, some of which work to some degree and others which barely work at all, that is why it is so excellent to try the Philips Hue because it meets all its claims really well.
Setup is a dream – you don’t have to know anything technical to install – just follow the instructions and you are away. I plugged my Hue bridge (looks a bit like a small router) into the mains and also using a supplied RJ45 cable into my internet router and the bridge lit up. I downloaded the Philips Hue app from the google play store (also available for IOS) and it found my bridge and told me it needed an update. I said yes to the update and it was complete in a little over 2 minutes.
I replaced my two ES bulbs with these Hue bulbs and turned them on. Then the app took me through the very simple set up process and allowed me to name the room that my lights were in. It detected them straight away and allowed me to turn them on and off from the app.
There are two Hue smart button controls in the kit, I used one of them to set up under the living room light switch (just sticks to the wall with pre-fitted sticky pads). I have set this up on my phone to dim the lights and turn them on/off, but I could just as easily set the lights to come on at specific times.
This simple to use kit is a dream and it allows you to fully control the light in the room – the colour/tint of the light has got 16 million combinations and it allows me to set the intensity of the light and even turn it on and off when I am elsewhere! Something that I am particularly impressed with is the default colour of white – it is a true white light and doesn’t have any of those coloured casts of early LED bulbs.
Also this not only is compatible with Alexa, but Hue is a standard option in the Alexa app, so you can set it up so simply. Now I can say “Alexa – living room lights on” and hey presto – there is light.
This is not a cheap product, but it is a reliable one that does exactly what it claims and doesn’t require an hour to set up (all of the above in less than 10 minutes!)
Well done to Philips for making a product that everyone will want and one that delivers genuine control and versatility for the busy person.

These are brilliant LED lights, I’ve got one on my landing and one in the pouch. Plug the power into the bridge then plug the network cable into it and the other end into your router. I downloaded the Hue app to my phone that was quite easy. You name the light bulbs in the app and just press the slider on or off, the light switch needs to be on before you get use the app away from home but you can still turn the light on and off using your light switch when get back home. I got warm white and they are really bright bulbs indeed. The whole quality of the bulbs and bridge is brilliant and well worth buying.

Over the last couple of years I’ve brought numerous Phillips hue branded items. From bulbs to back lights, beams and outdoor lights. As of yet I’ve yet to be disappointed… have one bridge set up in your house and all the items connect to it. Control from the touch of a button on your mobile or using the control buttons set for each area (added extra). Yes the bulbs and accessories are pretty expensive but I’ve had a couple colour bulbs coming close to 3 years now and they are still working perfect ! I think it’s personally very reasonable, especially for the quality… this is a great example at a fairly good price if you want to enter the world of Phillips hue. You won’t be disappointed!
