TLDR: if you can get it under $450, nowadays is still a good watch for the price. I would like to give it 4.5 stars as it is close from 5 stars than it is from 4 stars for that price, but Amazon doesn’t include that option.
I’ve been using this watch for a couple of months now, and while I had some problems at the beginning, after a factory reset the watch has been behaving very well. It certainly doesn’t have the latest and greatest tech such as dual-band GPS or maps for context when you’re following a route, but to be honest these are things I don’t really Its accuracy is very good for a single band GPS (I usually set it to use GPS and GLONASS as I do MTB every weekend) and I’ve found that sometimes it even returned better accuracy than my Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM, which has dual-band GPS. I remember once I had a bug in the ROAM where the route was not loading in the computer, I used the navigation from the watch and it was very usable. Sure it was less convenient for the watch position and the sport, but it can get you out of a pinch and the compass is accurate enough to even track MTB in the trails.
That being said, a very noticeable thing for me as soon as I got it from the box was the weight: maybe I was spoiled from my previous watch which was very lightweight, a Polar Vantage M2, but the quality of the materials and the extra components are immediately noticeable as soon as you pick it. In your wrist, you get used to it after a few days of wearing it, however, you need to be more careful when tightening the strap when you sleep, as it can produce inaccurate readings, or even detect long periods of time as ‘unrecognized’ if you press your watch against your body, as the weight will make it slide and lose contact with your skin.
When it comes to sports, despite you can get used to the watch weight, you can certainly feel it when you are making any bouncy sport, such as mountain biking, and you need to set it very tight to avoid the bouncing to affect the heart rate readings much. Whereas the strap itself is comfortable (more on that later) a tight watch may be uncomfortable no matter what, in my case I use an external heart rate sensor, so I can set the watch a little loose and still get accurate data; you will still feel the watch bouncing, but it won’t hurt your wrist, your mileage may vary on that end.
The strap is from FKM rubber and whereas I had the impression of being bulky in the videos, it is very sleek and probably the most comfortable strap I’ve tried, it is very breathable, and it dries very quickly. I like it and I would probably switch it just for style or color matching for some occasions. When it comes to durability, the watch has proven to be very durable, I’ve had a couple of crashes in my MTB with zero damage to the watch, I’ve hit the bezel once against a metal gate and the one who got the pain chipped was the gate lol, and I’ve been using it both outdoors doing MTB every weekend and in the gym without any physical marks either on the watch or the screen so far. Time will tell as two months it too little to judge, but it seems promising.
Many people have commented about the screen brightness, but I’ve had no issues whatsoever either using it indoors or outdoors with the brightness set at low. It is dimmer than other mineral crystal displays, but that is a sapphire thing, and it is present in any sapphire crystal display in any watch. That aside, when I’m doing MTB and considering my handlebar is wide sometimes I don’t even need to flick the wrist, sometimes I can get the HR by just glancing at it. In the gym I’ve noticed under the right lighting conditions the screen is not visible from an angle, but just moving your wrist a little makes it readable again and so far I don’t find it annoying as I prefer that and having peace of mind with my screen not breaking easily or scratching at all, as I had to replace the screen protector in my previous watch every few months.
I train between 8 and 12 hours a week in average, recording no GPS activities from Monday to Friday mainly being 45 minutes cardio sessions 5 times a week and three strength training sessions between 1 and 1.5 hours each and a long MTB ride on weekends for about 8 hours. With that usage I use to get between 5 and 6 days of battery life. It is not the most everlasting battery watch, but barely charging it once a week is good enough for me.
When it comes to the touch screen, it surely is a nice to have feature, but it is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the best touch screen experience in any watch, let alone in any sports watch. The touch screen is disabled while doing sports, something I don’t really mind. When it comes to everyday use, there is no back button gesture, which means you will have to rely on the physical button to do that, and that may be a small inconvenience to some. When you start interacting with the touch screen, there is a delay on the initial touch to the screen, which is slower to respond, and after the first interaction the consecutive interactions have a decent response time – for a sports watch – once you learn you need to tap and hold the screen for a fraction of a second with your first gesture and then proceed as normal, the touch is very usable, however, I can see that simple action can become very annoying for some people, and forgetting about it surely may turn the ‘annoying’ into a ‘frustrating’ experience. You get used to it after using it for a while; that being said, it should the watch the one to accommodate to the user needs, not the other way around.
Nowadays for the original price, I think it’s too expensive since the technology has advanced quite a bit, and it is missing features that have become normal in the industry, however, if you can get it under $450 I think even nowadays it is a good deal, I got mine for $430, but I’ve seen it even cheaper during some deals even here at Amazon. It is a good watch, and I am hoping to keep using it for the years to come.
I have had all the major sport smart watches and this by far my favorite. It looks great, is very durable and the Polar mobile app is excellent. It is also just as comfortable to wear as how great it looks. It is difficult to find a sport watch that checks all of these boxes. Is also very affordable compared to comparable fitness watches. The watch and application accurately and simply track all your activities, sleep and get timely notifications from your watch. The copper watch color and brown band are unique. The copper color is not to flashy, but cool enough to stand out from boring watch colors. I use it daily to log my walk and runs. I only take it off to give me wrist some breathing room every day or two and to charge. I will be long-time Polar customer because their products are only getting better and better.
I loved this watch from the first moment I saw it; Its stunning and has loats of features; Also its a very strong watch, military grade with the addition of an anti scrath Saphire glass; I could not be happier!!
Bought this to replace my Polar Vantage V. Haven’t found any problems with it so far, couple of additional features over the Vantage but most of it remains the same. You can control your music through it and a few other features which I haven’t used yet.
Wasn’t sure of buying this one but it has changed my running routine. Very accurate and super tough.
This has accompanied me through many miles and many countries.
Good simple functionality, not as flashy as some of the others. The touch screen is overly sensitive when you don’t want it to be so using the lock button has become a must for me. Battery life is really good and the compass to find your way back home came in handy when lost in Central park
(13/10/22). The watch navigation system takes a bit of getting used to but having done three walk/jogs I am beginning to understand the depth and variety of features. Sure you will need to watch YouTube vids to explain stuff but I think the payback will be worth it.
KOMOOT (a mapping tool) is pushed quite hard by Polar but unless you need to make a map before an excursion, I would simply start training and by default all the important parameters are recorded in the Polar Flow cloud account (free). A lot of effort and time have gone into this and a neat animated re-run of any of these recorded runs is aa super feature (see vid).
(11/10/22). I bought with a healthy discount that the open box items get. Was blemish free as per Amazon Warehouse description and 250 is a great price. Crystal glass and a steel bezel make for a solid and nice looking piece and begin to explain the price differential over resin or plastic cases and gorilla glass faces.
At 63, I am drinking and eating too much and exercising too little. I am placing this gizmo at the centre of my recovery plan (to shape up generally and do a half marathon in six months). In this context the investment is not at all expensive if its going to help me turn my life around. Also consider Adrian Chiles 2022 book on drinking less – interesting.
The watch is well documented and reviewed elsewhere. Heart rate is an important one for me, as is GPS, calories and the sleep analysis. Do not get too bothered about absolute accuracy as it is the improvement of key indicators that is way far more important than absolute, pin point accuracy (IMO). Having said that, reviews indicate good absolute accuracy (depending on terrain).
Komplett daneben! Diese Genauigkeit ist aber nicht berauschend! Ist etwa meine Uhr fehlerhaft? Ich schreibe an Polar Support eine E-Mail. Ich hoffe, sie wird beantwortet. Ich melde mich diesbezglich wieder.
Update, mein letzter vielleicht. Polar-Support hat auf meine Anfrage geantwortet. Ja, sie besttigen, dass der Grit X einen bekannten Softwarefehler bezglich initialer Hhemessung hat Anbei in Wortlaut, Zitat “Unfortunately, there is a known current bug (software error) related to the altitude measurement of the Grit X, which, among other things, means that sometimes several meters difference have to be compensated during manual calibration. The fix isn’t available yet, I’m sorry. The Grit X measures correctly the altitude values of the training sessions when 1) the altitude was manually calibrated before training
2) or the watch was restarted before training.”
I’ve used the Grit X for 2 years and I generally happy with it.
The Grit X is more of a sports watch than a smart watch. I don’t need it to make payments or control my music. Getting message updates on my watch is annoying. I use it got walks, hikes and for martial arts training. Most watches don’t cater for the latter. You have 40 sport profiles to choose from, even for yoga and meditation. Compared to the competition, it’s neither the biggest or the heaviest.
The bad, I’d like to be able to run a stopwatch or timer whilst running a training session. You can’t with the Grit X. Also the app could be a bit more user friendly. When you set up daily routines, it sets the time to 6pm by default. It would be nice to be able to drag and copy. Instead of editing each day. Which is tedious. Hiking routes don’t always sync and when they do, it can be quite annoying. At this price range, it’s not the worst. After 2 years, some of the buttons are less responsive. But despite the wear and tear, it’s still doing OK. I’d most like upgrade to a Grit X Pro.
At first I wasn’t impressed with the screen but it does what’s supposed to do ..no messing around no daft YouTube etc ..its a watch for someone who takes there fitness seriously ..it’s not a watch for someone who wants there phone & tablet & laptop to look soooo cute together ffs lol
The Polar Grit X Pro is a solid 4* product to me, unfortunately for the price it should be 5*. Despite being marketed as being for “outdoors” enthusiasts, the Grit X Pro’s feature set is still a little lacking compared to the competition in this respect. The watch is self is a good solid, high quality piece. Solid also means it’s a tad on the heavy side. I like the FKM strap but it seems to be a bit of a sweat trap. The screen is a decent enough size but the display itself is mediocre. It’s transflective, supposedly best in bright sunlight. Not exactly a big feature of the British climate. The display has poor contrast and colours are dull, far from vibrant but that’s the norm for displays of this type. It’s also a touch screen, which is the biggest waste of time going and generally a poor performer. Polar needn’t have bothered. Some of the on screen numerals and characters could do with being bigger too. I find battery life is ok but that’s all. Heart rate monitoring is the best I’ve ever expereinced in a watch, closely rivaling Polar’s chest strap monitors. I tend to only wear watches of this type when I’m doing an activity I want to measure and track. So the bucket full of 24/7 health, performance and sleep monitoring it does is superfluous to me. A lot of it is gym rat orientated rather than for “outdoorsy” people anyway. As far as outdoorsy goes. I don’t like that Polar do not have an integrated way within the Flow app for creating and uploading routes into the watch. You have to use third party products like komoot. A clunky approach! There is no barometer trend graph, like my Garmin Instinct has, just internet sourced weather forecasts. That’s crap! Hills and mountains have their own weather, the forecast for the nearest town can be of no relevance. A barometric trend can warn you of changing weather. Also in the hills and mountains you can be out of internet connection for days if you are doing an extended trip. To much internet dependence is not good. The GPS sampling rate doesn’t really fit with hiking and walking either, you’ve either got 1 second or the next option 1 minute. It needs some options like 5 or 10 seconds. The power off function needs adding to quick links rather than being massively buried in the device menus. A decent firmware update could bump the Grit X Pro up to 5* quite easily.
Very good watch, accuracy of GPS identical to the Polar Vantage M2, with very similar features, but with a more rugged build, as you’d expect for the additional cost.
Other than the build, I couldn’t justify paying more for this watch than the M2. That said, in my view the Garmin Forerunner 245 is a better watch for runners than either of the Polars.
Love this watch. The material doesn’t scratch, I have bashed it a few times and simply just wipe the debris of it. However don’t push your luck. Buy a screen protector is you are as clumsy as me. The functions are really good. Just wished they had an interval option for training. I just simply use other. I haven’t really explored all options but I like the fact it suggests exercises to do. I need to find out if I can adjust these exercises. It gives good details on sleep, motivates you to train as it would tells you if you are de training maintaining excelling etc. So much more. Battery life is decent think 3 days. 2 issues are when in training mode you can’t see the time and the watch light doesn’t always come up when you want to see your progress.
Brilliant watch. Been in use for 2 busy active months and will go happily for 3/4 days with about 2 hours of walking/running daily between charges.
GPS super accurate, works great with komoot. HR sensor is accurate every time I’ve manually checked too. You can change the metrics easily and customise through the app. Which does take a little practice but neat feature.
I’ve found it easy to read and easily bright enough. Basically not taking it off except to charge. My OH has an iwatch and is very jealous!
I’ve knocked it against some fairly solid items whilst doing DIY too and not a scratch on the face.
2 minor criticisms:
A couple of exercises have not been tallied correctly on daily tracker, although it does register them in the activity section on the polar app. I suspect the app is buggy.
Amazon messed up the original shipping. Not an issue of the watch of course!
While the watch wasn’t too heavy, the strap was very uncomfortable – so only any use with HR turned off and used off wrist – which is OK for navigation.
However for a 400 watch the hardware, while accurate, was barely adequate for the money. I have watches less than half the cost with far more comprehensive capability, the biggest negative is total lack of automatic activity recognition – even the most basic Garmin bands can do that! I tried the watch mainly because it claimed to offer Google Fit syncing, sadly this only works for manually started activities nothing else (all-day Heartrate, weight, sleep and body parameters such as weight) are not.
In short Polar seem to be years behind the competition and very, very overpriced. The app is complicated and not intuitive, its awful!
It was quickly returned for refund.
I’ll be sticking with my Garmin 245!!
I don’t normally write reviews on products, but I thought I would for this product due to having very limited experience with sports watches with this being my first one.
Pros:
Simplicity: its a very easy to navigate watch, with no added extras. Its basically a sports watched stripped back from all the smart watch options. It simply is just a tracking sports watch with no fancy bells or whistles, this is definitely a pro for me as I dont need all of the extra stuff another watch may give you.
Reliability: Not to Jinx it, but so far, I have seen the reliability in this watch. It has given me good readings not only on GPS distances but also reliable / believable heart rates. Occasionally it reads a bit high, as when I am resting I have seen it in the 90s, but maybe I am just unfit.
The sleep tracking also seems pretty reliable and gives plenty of information and breakdowns on your sleep cycles and patterns, also how many times you were woken in your sleep.
Rugged styling: This is the Grit X which is targeted towards the outdoor sports world. It is waterproof, you can run in the rain with it. It will survive being knocked around a bit.
App: The polar flow app is very VERY detailed and breaks down multiple readings and stats about your day. I find it easy to understand but potentially a bit overwhelming as there is a lot of information on there.
Cons:
HR occasionally showing high: Like I said before, Maybe I am just unfit.
Not amazingly comfortable for all day use: The watch can make your wrist itchy, but its an easy fix, take the watch off for a while, wipe the back of it, sorted.
Manually tell it you are awake: One thing that some people may find annoying regarding sleep tracking, when you are awake, it does not automatically recognise you are awake, and asks you to confirm this. It is literally just one click on the red ringed button to tell it you are awake, so not to much of an issue.
Overall: This is a solid watch for any sports enthusiast. It’s definitely not on the level of the Garmin Fenix but isn’t trying to be, do don’t be disappointed. If you want a reliable watch to keep on your wrist day in and day out which will track all of your stats reliably and show it in an easy to break down formula, then this is the watch for you. If you arent 100% sure, then shop around a bit. Coming from me, this is a solid reliable choice not to be easily dismissed.
Chose this after a lot of research when my trusty Garmin 235 finally reached the end of the line.
Battery life is superb. I charge maybe once every week to ten days, and average 40-50km running every week.
The display is good and very clearly visible in daylight. Response time to a raised wrist in starting the display can be a bit slow.
Build quality is good. It feels solid. The strap is lovely and has plenty of adjustment. Starting and stopping needs a good shove on the buttons meaning accidentally pressing is a thing of the past. But it can make an accurate start/finish a little bit tricky.
I like the idea of the ascent/descent hill split feature although in use it’s a bit patchy and inconsistent.
Menus and screens easy to navigate with positive feedback from the buttons, and a useful hybrid touchscreen. Some data a bit hard to read on the go as needs to be scrolled up and down.
The app is great. Huge amounts of info. Easy and fast to sync with phone compared to Garmin. Very fast transfer to Strava. No need to pay Strava upgrade costs as you get all the info you could need with the Polar app.
The instructions are a bit hit and miss and if you’re used to Garmin the watch takes a bit of getting used to. Also, if you’re looking for more of a smartwatch, give this a miss. It’s a focused sport watch.
Aside from a few niggles, this is a decent product and worth a look even if you’re a Garmin-phile.
Took a little while to break in the watch but now I love it great battery life and the information from the watch about sleep, recovery, training load is nearly spot on aldo I still use my H10 when running for better accuracy.
I found this watch very good for running, specially out in the countryside. From my point of view, it is not a watch for mountaineers but for trail runners. The heart rate sensor is very accurate, and the gps perfect. Design looks gorgeous and it is very light.
Yes, I do like it. However there are some functionalities as Recovery Pro, which it should be included and currently on other devices from the same brand
I have always been a Polar user but did look around this time because there are plenty of good quality Sports watches out there for this price. I had the M430 previously and looked at many comparison sites regarding the Grit X. It’s still pretty new and there’s not a lot of reviews out there but based on what I read and saw I took the leap.
Love this watch. It by far the best Polar watch I have had. The Heart Rate tracks in line with my M430 and the additional features all add to my current weekly activity really well (160k bike rides (Road and Mountain), walks and a weekly run – which I hope to build on). In particular the watch weight really makes a difference – I have never been able to keep a watch on through the night and therefore not ever tracked sleep. I hardly know I have the Grit on it is that light and comfortable.
The charge is good – so far I have had three days of around 12 GPS tracking activities (around 10 hrs) and it is at 50%.
I would highly recommend and really pleased I kept the faith and carried on using what is such a responsive, easy to use, robust and stylish brand. I would also like to say that I had an issue setting up the weather tracker and through using the website via messenger the tech support took 10 minutes to guide me through the process. Very impressive.
5 years Polar user with a V800. Bought the grit X with a little apprehension due to bad reviews on Vantage watches. I don’t use it for navigation so can’t comment. I use a chest strap for HR as I would never trust any optical sensor. Had the watch 3 days and I love it and the extra options that have opened up in Flow. Love the suggested workouts on the watch which are easy to follow. Love the HR gauge when training. The cardio loading analysis seems really great as well and in general it’s a massive motivator. There was nothing wrong with my V800 and I was going to wait until it started to fail but couldn’t resist in the end and I’m very glad I bought this. Will update this as I go. I don’t have any problem with the screen brightness. I have no real experience of other brands so maybe it is duller than it’s competitors but it’s no more or less easy to read than my V800.
Update 16/03/21
My opinion on this watch as I experience it more has got even better. I started to use the navigation features about 6 months ago by downloading routes from Komoot and using the watch like a sat-nav in the Peak District UK and I have had some of the best mountain bike rides ever, on my own, in the middle of nowhere without getting lost once. It really does open up a lot of opportunities when you use the product in this way.
I do strength training 3 times per week and I do use a chest strap even though it not very cardio-heavy work, the difference between cardio load calculations with and without the chest strap sensor are massive (confirming that LED heart rate sensors are not reliably accurate and that if you want accuracy then a chest strap is essential).
The sleep measurement and metrics are cool, I don’t go into detail that much but it’s cool to see how ‘recharged’ you are and this does concur with how you’re feeling. Interesting to see how much even a small amount of alcohol impacts your autonomous nervous system. Has helped me to appreciate how much a couple of good (and teetotal) nights sleep impacts on my keenness to train and train hard.
A few things have happened in the last 18 months, my dog died, I got an incredible enduro mountain bike, I got a Grit X to replace my V800 and of course COVID so all 4 things have impacted on my schedule in a big way but when I look at my training diary since 2016 I have done more training sessions in the last year than I have in the previous 5 years and I do put some of that down to the greatness of the Grit X.
I love polar, like this watch a lot. I like it enough to tale the poor stuff on the chin.
If your after a great touchscreen experience this is not the watch to buy.
Straps nice, with saphire glass. It’s all good. Oh apart from the touchscree
Superb watch but doesn’t stay paired with my mobile..it seems to go off it as soon as i dont have my phone with me. Super annoying
Watch is very rugged and is ideal for outdoor activities. It collects loads of data which I am still learning!
