Sounds good if a little too much midrange, and the off axis rejection is not as good as many claim. I found out that my B1 outperforms it despite being cheaper and older.
Rode makes incredible microphones and this one is no exceptions. This thing is built like a tank. It’s heavy and feels substantial. The sound quality of this mic is incredible straight out of the box but really comes alive when you put a decent EQ on it. I’ve never had such a crisp sounding mic. Very happy with this purchase.
You would be hard-pressed to find a better microphone at this price point. The first thing you notice with this mic is that it is heavy. You know you are a getting a quality product made of the best materials when you pick it up.
Sound quality is fantastic. Obviously not as good as something in the $400-$500 price point, but they could easily sell this microphone at $200 and it would still be a decent deal.
You won’t regret your purchase.
I looked at several options before buying the podmic. Even though others offer usb connection as well as XLR, the podmic was designed for vocals. This means I need minimal processing when editing my podcast. In fact, there are several episodes where no processing is done. The one thing to keep in mind is that the podmic is “gain hungry”, this means a cheap interface may not put out enough gain to reach an optimal volume. You can correct that in post (risking a little noise) or get a mic booster. At the moment I’m going the cheap route, as most mic boosters cost as much as the mic itself.
Regarding the audio quality, I only have positive adjectives on inventory. The mids shine really well and the lows are just enough to give you a nice presence.
I bought this mic after wanting it for over a year now and it sounds amazing truly podcast quality but there are things you will need too get it running well and without a problem mostly also this mic is super heavy like you can feel the quality just from holding it alone.
You are gonna need an xlr cable duh and also a audio interface again duhhh but don’t cheap out on these unless you want to get a gain booster which are hard af too buy like finding one in stock that won’t break the bank will be like finding a grain of sand. Also get a good xlr cable most aren’t expensive and mine was 4 pounds and feels good and won’t break.
If you are in a windy environment get a pop filter to put over it as the internal pop filter is crap and basically not even a feature.
Also if you already have a boom arm or any kind of mic arm it should support it as it supports both 5/8″ and 3/8″ threaded mic stands so no need for a new one or a janky or overpriced adaptor.
My only complaints are the fact they advertise a pop filter built in which I’m sure there is too a degree but it does nothing compared too a real one. And also how on my boom arm it doesn’t like too screw on securely as the built in shock mount or stand can turn allowing the mic to move where ever needed means I tighten it as much as I would like but it’s not a deal breaker.
Overall an amazing microphone and sounds incredible for the price(excluding cables and interface and maybe gain booster if needed) and the fact that with some simple EQ it can sound just like the SM7B which seems too be the standard for mics like these I don’t know why when this thing exists. So in short in my opinion (baring in mind i came from a blue snowball condenser mic) this thing is insanely good for the price and I don’t think I will ever swap mics now. So if you can afford it get it unless you find something you like more. But if you want a good quality and amazing sounding mic for under 100 pounds then this is the one for you but please do listen to sound tests before you decide as not everyone likes the same sound I like 🙂
This is the best mic i have ever used, plain and simple. I was talking to people on discord not 2 feet from a roaring ac, and they couldn’t hear it at all. (though you need a low pass filter on an amp for this)
Oh! This is *not* compatible with the shock mount Rode makes (does not need it anyhow).
Pros:
-Build quality. This thing is SOLID! There’s no plastic on this thing..all metal. No cheapness here.
-Sound quality of this mic is truly great especially paired with a mixer with great pre-amps.
-Aesthetically the design is very pleasing. Kinda gives off a retro look with modern spin in my opinion.
-The price to performance is truly amazing for what you get with the quality.
-The form factor is great and compact.
Cons:
-The mic has a built in pop filter, but its not the best.
-Weight. Since this thing is built like a tank, smaller/cheaper boom arms might struggle to stay in place.
Final Thoughts:
This thing is truly amazing in every way. Not sure if im blown away by it due to it being my first XLR Mic. Or the fact that I have this paired with a GoXLR and the pre-amps on it/EQ settings makes this thing sound amazing. I’ve received several compliments on my voice when talking in game on this mic. Some noting how clear, punchy, and streamer like I sound. Though I’ve listed some Cons, there’s really none in my book. I wasn’t expecting the built-in pop filter to do anything super. If there was one con I’m not a fan of is if you should get a pop filter cover, it takes away from the aesthetic of the mic. Since the mic is pretty compact, the pop filter makes it seem you have a black blob on a mic arm. Again, this is pretty minor all and all. Gotta say i’m definitely a fan of Rode now coming from a Blue Yeti USB mic. Well down.
Dafr bekommt man satten Klang ohne nervigen Popfilter etc.
I love supporting RODE, they have amazing customer service and really well built mics with good warranty options.
Had the NT1A which would be much better value as a streamer because it comes with an XLR cable, shock mount, 10 year warranty and the mic itself has wonderful build quality. This would be overkill for most people though.
This PODmic is very very heavy, the build quality is just as good but be prepared to buy the accessories you need. I use it mostly for discord/gaming and I think its the best value you can get at this price point.
I’ve been using this mic for about 8 months now. I was about to buy either an RE20 or SM7B, but once this came out and saw the reviews, I had to give it a try. I’ll be honest here, the lows are a little lacking. That’s easily fixed by software or by a slight adjustment on your mixer (or whatever you’re using), but I wish it had a little more bass like the Shure SM7B. The built in shock mount is fantastic, but the built in pop filter doesn’t do a perfect job. Overall, I’d say the SM7B is slightly better…oh wait, this is only $100? Yeah, this is a no brainier. Absolutely amazing for the price, do not regret my purchase in the slightest.
Pros:
-Great sound out of the box
-Built like a tank
-Has so-so built-in pop filter (more about that below)
-Has so-so built-in shock mount (more about that below)
Cons:
-Built-in pop filter isn’t great, an additional pop filter would be recommended
-Built-in shock mount isn’t so great. Get a boom arm
-Has weak bass levels. A little EQ or getting closer to the mic to use the proximity effect to add bass might be needed
Overall: If you don’t want the Shure SM58 (another $99 dynamic mic that has great sound), this is another alternative to go. If I had to choose, I’d go with the SM58. But if you don’t dig the old school look, then definitely go with the Rode Podmic. It definitely is an aesthetically pleasing looking mic. This mic’s drawbacks include being weak on the low end (bass) and very sensitive to plosives (despite being advertised as having a built-in pop filter). Overall, the sound quality for this mic is bright and sounds perfect after a tad of EQ manipulation (specifically a slight boost in bass and maybe some mids).
Update (5.27.2021): I had to knock off one star due to this mic’s unusual sensitivity to plosives. Throwing on a cheap WS2 knockoff windscreen will do the trick but Rode marketed this mic to have an internal pop filter built-in so you wouldn’t need one. Another issue is this mic’s lack of bass. After owning this mic for a while, aside from using proximity effect (which increases the tendency to have more annoying plosives), I really have to EQ in more bass in post. It’s $99 so overall, it’s a fair tradeoff that will require additional tinkering from the user’s end
Excellent mic for home recording. I’ve tested this for both voice over work and metal vocals (screaming). Sounds fantastic and very similar to the Shure SM7b I was borrowing from a friend after some minor EQ adjustments and the addition of a foam windscreen with less need for tons of pre-amp gain.
Great product for the price.
This mic is amazing quality for the price. Highly recommend.
It sounds great for tracking singing & podcast vocals.
I did have to buy a cloudlifter to boost the input when doing voice over work to avoid catching the noise floor, but all good now.
The XLR input is a lil janky, but not really an issue if it doesn’t get moved while being used.
Great, dependable microphone. Being dynamic it copes with an untreated room much better than a condenser mic would, focusing on the voice and minimising room reverb when used close.
Use a pop filter, and aim past the top of the mic for best results.
Going from the Blue snowball to this was a bit step up and you can hear it. The sound quality is great. It does a good job of Isolation. The mic is heavier than I expected and if you have a fairly cheap boom arm like I have, expect to have to readjust the mic. I would recommend getting a windscreen for it. The one for the procastor works really well on it.
Initial impression when opening the box ‘Damn this thing is heavy’, like it maxes out the capacity of the road PSA1 arm. Hooked it into my scarlett solo gen 3 and realized this thing needs mucho gain for sure (90% gain). This mic replaced the Yeti Pro, it is far less sensitive than the yeti but sounds great. Just make sure you are using a device with good, low noise pre-amps, the scarlet barely does it. The built in pop filter was an unexpected bonus.
This thing sounds great! When I upgraded from the antlion modmic wireless to this one of my friends stopped me two words in to just say “holy crap your mic quality is amazing!”.
The build quality is excellent and feels incredibly solid. The mic pickup pattern is perfect for me because I also use my guitar multi effects pedal to feed my electric guitar into my pc and since this is a dynamic mic I can easily point it toward my face and away from the guitar use a noise gate to cut out my guitar playing from this mic so you only get the feed from the guitar through the pedal. Fantastic for going online and practicing guitar with others in voice chat.
If I accidently broke this tomorrow I’d buy this same model again.
This is a great microphone, feels very sturdy and well made and the sound quality is fantastic.
I’m new to the XLR microphone game so let me explain some of the things I needed to consider when starting from scratch.
With this microphone, I also bought:
– No Bull XLR cable
– Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface (Note, this may not be the ideal choice as it doesn’t boost quite enough as I explain next)
This works BUT it is very quiet too! So you may want to consider something like a Cloud lifter. Alternatively, what I ended up using is VoiceMeter (software) to boost the audio which seems to work well for me.
Mounted this on a generic 12.99 adjustable boom arm that is rated for the Blue Yeti and seems to hold absolutely fine too!
This is a good solid mic (really solid, actually—all metal and 2 lbs!) As you might guess from the name Podmic, I use it for spoken word recording. If the environment is noisy, the mic (pointed at me and away from the noise) does a nice job of pulling out my voice. Has a built-in pop shield, vastly reducing plosives without the need for an external shield or a dead cat. Integrates automatically with the Rodecaster Pro board.
Very well built mic and 10yr warranty, once registered, so built to last I would say. Sounds great using with Rodecaster pro, I do use a wind shield with it but you may not as has built in one. Happy purchase.
I couldn’t be happier with this microphone. I choose to use this microphone over the SM7B which should speak volumes about how much I like to Rode Procaster!
This microphone has excellent build quality and has the heft to back it up, this microphone is much heavier than most people might be used to, reassuringly so! It also comes with an excellent leather padded carry/storage case as well as a 7 year warranty.
The top of the microphone screws off which will allow you to access the internal pop/wind shield which slides over the top of the capsule, shielding it from pops and “plosives”. Although it has to be said when speaking up close it does leave a bit to be desired, and as you can see in my photos I have opted to use a much more substantial cover.
One of the great things with buying a Rode microphone is the eco system, Rode makes a shock mount that fits this microphone specifically, a boom arm that is designed to carry the weight of this microphone no problem, external wind/pop shields that will
help you improve the performance in different environments… The list goes on. Gone are the days of checking if a random stand or mount fits your mic, Rode has you covered!
This microphone for me personally blows the SM7B out of the water, so much so that I sold mine. Out of the box it has a much fuller sound, picking up on more of the low end “bassy” tones in your voice as well as delivering great performance in the middle and highs. This microphone sounds full and bright and is great if you don’t want to have to do “too much” post processing. Of course, the sound can be improved with post processing but this mic needs less than most on the market.
The bottom line is that this microphone punches far above its weight and you will often see it compared with microphones 2x-3x it’s price, and it even beats some of them! It has an eco system of compatible accessories behind it AND comes with a 7 year warranty and all microphones are made in Australia!
This microphone is of great quality for the price. I was looking for a dynamic mic for close up voice work instead of my Audio Technica At4033a. I looked at different reviews comparing it to the Shure SM7B and this microphone from Rode is very new and I have to say pulls its weight compared to the Shure SM7B, I certainly wasn’t left disappointed. I connect it via a DBX 286s compressor which sounds great once I had set it up which took me a while.
I almost went with a shure mic, but there were a few negative reviews on the one I wanted, so I tried this one that I had never heard of. Years in a band made me love shure, but I’m honestly glad I tried this one. Sound quality is great, it doesn’t seem to pick up all the ambient noise in the room, and the pop filter actually seems to work (although I aded an external one as well). Combined with the rode swing arm, this is a great upgrade to the snowball I had been using previously. The snowball had much more gain, and I had to add in a preamp to this mic, but the quality of the output sound is noticeably better, smoother or something I’m not sure how to describe it. Will buy again.
I love the feel of this mic, very heavy and solid. I love the look of this mic, very iconic and visually pleasing.
It has an internal pop filter and we all love the look. However put a foam cover on it. It improves the sound a little by making it sound a little richer.
Can’t argue for the price. Really solid mic at the price tag.
The mic picks up great!
Every breath and inhale as well as every smack, click and dry mouth sound you make. You have no idea how noisy you are. I had a guest that has some raspy breathing issues and it caught all of it.
Full disclosure I have very little in the way of adjusting the audio during recording. If you have a control interface like the Rodecaster Pro or something you could probably tune a lot of it out. I have just it going into a simpler recorder Zoom Podtrack P4.
When I picked it up I was like wow this thing is quality. It sounds awesome even though I don’t have any preamp (at least for now). For podcasts? Awesome. For music (specially vocals) weirdly enough, it sounds great (I sometimes prefer the voice of my AT2020 but this works just fine too). I didn’t think I’m gonna love this mic this much I actually thought I’m just gonna return this and get a SM7B. But It’s a fantastic mic. Really cheap for what it is. Don’t even hesitate in buying it.
Bought for a grandson who is into podcasting. He had reviewed the marrketplace, and was very satisfied with this particular model.
WICHTIG: Kein Mikro klingt ohne Equalizer perfekt.
First off this mic is great, for $100 you can’t say “you get what you payed for” I felt like this was a $150-$200 microphone. If you have a deeper voice this might now be the best mic for you. It’s better in the higher end and lacks low end. If this is your first XLR microphone you will need an interface so that’ll be another $150. So if this is your first time dipping your feet into the higher-end microphone world please do your research. The packaging is not great, and came 9 days before expected.
I am loving this mic. The style is great, the look is awesome. Most importantly the sound is so good. It works a treat with the set up I have and the GO XLR Mini.
The Podcaster is a decent microphone with good quality audio, but there’s one main thing to mention… it’s so quiet. Being a USB microphone there’s no way to boost the real audio levels it captures, only exaggerating the audio through software, which isn’t ideal for anything like realtime calls. You need to be sure to speak very loudly directly into the microphone to get any use out of it, as it doesn’t pick up quieter, regular talking volumes at all.
The built-in pop-filter isn’t worth worrying about either, it filters next-to-nothing, and you absolutely need an external pop-filter if you’re to use this microphone.
There’s been a lot of decent USB microphones released in this price range by many brands since the release of the Podcaster, many with comparable or better audio quality and with many more affordances, notably the additions to the Razer Seiren series, or the Shure MV7 which has both USB and XLR outputs.
This mic is built like a tank and has a full rich sound. It’s perfect for doing radio or podcasts and is suitable for music. It does a fantastic job at blocking out background noise and if you’re able to get one for $100 or a little over, you’re getting a steal. When it’s quality you want and don’t want to sacrifice because of budget, Rode mics don’t disappoint.
This is a professional, quality mic. I use my for streaming and the sound quality is superb. Please be aware though that if you are plugging this mic in to a PC then you will most likely need a small amp (with USB out) such as a Scarlet Solo which will add significantly to the price. Please be aware, because this is a processional recording mic, it does not have a USB output. You will also need to get yourself an XLR cable to plug the Mic in to the Scarlet (or similar) USB amp. I purchased a quality, “No Bull” premium cable for just over 6.
This mic is heavy (quality heavy), so if you are going to be using a mic boom make sure it can handle the weight. I use a TONOR Adjustable Suspension Boom Scissor which currently cost around 24. You could buy the RODE arm which will cost around 3 times more but doesn’t seem to add anything that I can see that the TONOR arm doesn’t so I recommend that you save yourself around 40.
Oh, the gold metal dot that you will find on the mic indicates where the front of the mic is. Have this facing you when talking in to the mic. The areas to the left and right of this dot will also have good pick up.
In summary, for a PC setup I use the following with this mic which should give you a good start in knowing what you will need to look for:
– RODE Procaster Mic
– Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface (amp)
– No Bull Premium XLR Cable (2m)
(High Quality Balanced Male to Female Microphone Lead)
– TONOR Microphone Arm Stand
(Adjustable Suspension Boom Scissor Mic Stand with Pop Filter, 3/8″ to 5/8″ Adapter, Mic Clip, Upgraded Heavy Duty Clamp)
This is a superb dynamic mic that is a serious alternative to the Shure SM7b. Whilst the SM7b has some advantages like better internal shock mounting, I prefer my voice on the Procaster.
As many people have pointed out, this mic needs a lot of gain and +50dB without hiss is a lot of ask of many interfaces, hence the advice to use a Fethead or CloudLifter. An interesting, albeit slightly more expensive alternative is to get a dbx286s. This is a slim 1U rackmountable unit that gives you a lot of clean gain, it also includes a de-esser, a gate you can use to hide background noise, along with a low frequency control that gives you that “radio voice” and a high frequency alternative that adds a pleasant crispness. Now you could do some of those things in post-production if you are recording, but it is a great option if you are live (or like me have a huge problem with external noise from the street). I realise I’m in danger of reviewing the dbx rather than the Rode, but they make such a perfect combination for live streaming I think it is worth mentioning. This setup really brings out the best in the Rode mic.
The Procaster itself is incredibly solid. I think it benefits from the Rode shockmount and boom arm, but that’s a personal choice depending on how you intend to use it. I think it needs some sort of pop filter, you can get 3rd party alternatives to the Rode foam pop filter, which is a bit expensive. A more visually attractive option is the metal grill available from Roxdon. It is expensive but custom made for the Procaster. If your mic is in shot then it looks really nice.
It is great for use in untreated rooms or noisy environments, so a very forgiving choice if you are recording or streaming from a room you cannot treat for sound. To some extent this would be true of any dynamic mic, but this has a large diaphragm to capture a full rendition of your voice and rejects lots of sound from the sides and behind.
Naturally the Procaster will work better with some voices than others e.g. I’m not a singer, but if I were I’d be a light tenor. I use some breathing exercises so I am speaking from my diaphragm and not my throat, which would have a more constricted sound. So while this mic is good out of the box, you can also learn to sound better on it e.g. finding the sweet spot in terms of distance.
BTW if you literally just want to record straight onto your computer and avoid all XLR type stuff then there is the Rode Podcaster, which is basically the same mic but with USB and a socket for your headphones. XLR mics give you more options for the future, but I appreciate some people might want to just plug it in and record.
Ottimo rapporto qualit/prezzo.
30+ year audio professional, pro voiceover producer, blahblahblah etc. Owner of over $11000 worth of mics, including the biggies: TLM-102, 103, U87, plus two SM7b’s and two Procasters.
Looking for a broadcast sound? Just buy this. Seriously. Just go ahead and do it. Rode really, Really, REALLY outdid themselves with this thing. I’m sorta astonished. For the price of one SM7, you can outfit yourself with FOUR of these. Character of the mic is as good or better than most broadcast dynamic mics. Frequency is right where they plot it at. Built like a friggin’ dreadnaught, this puppy weighs in at a whopping 1lb 14.7 oz (yes, I weighed it, because I just couldn’t believe what my hands were telling me.) Sound is everything the Procaster gives you, minus just a bit of (IMO, unnecessary) 10+k brightness, and a wee bit of “oomph.” I do voiceovers, and actually have to dial *back* <100hZ. I don't want "oomph." I want FLAT, with solid, consistent presence, and no huge dynamic curve. Side rejection is very good, verging on great. +8khZ will sneak in, but environmental noises below 8k will likely be of no great concern.
Of note: unless you have a *very* high end preamp, or a deck/board that has very robust gain controls per channel, you'll really want an in-line gain solution. This mic IS gain-hungry, and the signal of mine DEFINITELY benefits from a FetHead. Without, I had to push my Scarlett up to 9.5 to stripe an acceptable track in Logic, and it was clipping the mic *and* giving me low volume anyway. With the in-line, I got a great take at 45% on the Scarlett, and a beautiful, clean, warm recording with plenty of headroom.
This thing nails it in all categories. I'm sorry in advance to everybody reading this that missed out on the second wave of these that became available for like 5min in October. May the odds be in your favor for the next time. I'll be taking another swipe at a few more of these myself. Worth twice what they're asking for.
All the hype is true...
Amazing mic, solid build and a great sound. Plus it looks wicked
Yep, worked, stuck in a cable hooked it up to a RDECaster and started recording. I’ve been told it looks nice too.
Excellent quality heavier than I thought but seems well made. Other people with more experience of high end mics rate this well I have only a cheap mic to compare to but would say for this price fantastic for voice overs, not used for other purposes but is great.
I like the Rode Podmic. It produces a nice clear and clean audio signal. It’s a heavy sturdy mic and, as a dynamic mic you’ll need a decent audio interface and should consider an additional pre-amp.
Check out the audio test I did in the attachment
It’s an excellent microphone.
I bought the RODE Podmic to record voiceovers for video tutorials and podcasts. Out of the box you can tell it’s really good quality as it feels really well made, looks great, and is heavy (you could do some serious damage with this thing!)
I’m attaching it to a Rodecaster via XLR, which is a breeze to setup (helped by the fact that the Rodecaster has a custom setting for the Podmic). One thing to note – you need a decent pre-amp because of the gain this mic needs, so if you don’t have that then consider buying a Cloudlifter cl-1.
Apparently there’s a pop shield and shockmount built in (meaning that if you do want to fit something externally it’s a bit more tricky to find something that matches) and you can definitely tell. Although not perfect, the usual knocks and pops are definitely dulled if not filtered out.
Comparing this to a Shure SM7B, you can definitely tell the difference, but you’d expect that to be the case given the Shure is over 3x the price.
Overall I’d say this is a fantastic buy and great value for money.
Love this mic. It sounds like nothing I’ve ever used before and really helps you hear what you actually sound like when broadcasting rather than what a cheap mic makes you sound like.
Got two of these bad boys hooked up to a soundcraft ui24r and they sound wonderful. For voiceover I like them just as much as the SM7B and since they cost way less they would be my recommendation.
I use them for Twitch streaming as well as youtube content creation and they produce a brilliant sound, my only caution would be their size, they’re pretty big mics. Perhaps a PodMic is more appropriate if you want to put it between yourself and the screen. I find the this mic to have a better sound though so I’d still go with this one every time.
Great mic. <3 it.
I’ve been so impressed with this mic. I bought it as a bundle with the winch arm thingy and shock mount and the audio quality is second to none. The background noise is really easy to control and even in a basic room with no soundproofing it works perfectly.
I bought this microphone because ive been an admirer of the Rode brand for a couple of years. I use it for streaming as well as podcasting and i have to say it is absolutely perfect.
The construction of the mic is top quality, it is sturdy, heavy and structurally sound. The weight of the mic makes it feel even higher in quality.
The quality of this microphone really shines in how it sounds, i have it paired with my TC Helicon GOXLR and with barely any EQ at all it sounds incredible. When you get up close to it to make use of the proximity effect it makes the microphone sound even thicker and have a deeper, more enriched sound. I have managed to make it sound nearly indistinguishable from the Shure SM7B which if you know what THAT mic sounds like then you will understand the quality of this one.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their streaming audio or for someone who is looking for a great XLR microphone that wont cost them an arm and a leg.
With the virus, I have had to do a lot of my radio work from home. The quality of this microphone means my show sounds like I am in the studio (save for the sounds of birds screeching outside the window or the washing machine going into spin cycle).
I highly recommend this microphone.
This is a great microphone for recording podcasts and any kind of music you plan to do. It definitely helps if your planning to buy some further attachments like the clip on pop filters or a stand set.
If your scrolling through amazon, and don’t want to spend a bomb on a microphone or audio interface bundles, then give this microphone a shot. It’s a great buy for the price, and as a qualified IT Technician, I can tell you spec wise, it’s bang on for the price.
This is a brilliant microphone that easily rivals some of the more expensive dynamics such as the shure SM7B. Not the most realistic sound production but gives a great broadcast like sound that works really well with crisp bassy voices. The only thing to take into account with this mic is that it’s very gain hungry. If you cheap out on an audio interface this mic will have pretty bad noise which will make it sound a lot worse than it actually is. Ideally you will want a good interface with something to boost gain such as a cloud lifter but an interface with a decent power output should be enough.
I used a ModMic before, which is way better than most headset mics.
This is even better than that and, with a boom mic, not too tricky to use.
You can get real close for that intimate ‘radio’ sound, or can stay a few inches back for a more ‘natural’ sound.
Low noise floor, though I admit, I use a gate (on a GoXLR) so I don’t experience it much. Not noticeable when speaking anyway.
The built-in shock mount works well enough that I am happily using an arm mount clamped to my desk where I type.
The built-in pop filter works well enough that I don’t worry about speaking directly into the end from close up.
I’m no sound engineer, but I’m quite picky and I’m very pleased.
The Rode PodMic is amazing, clear, crisp audio and excellent value compared to other high end expensive dynamic microphones. I have received so many compliments from friends when i use this in discord and even strangers in games when i use it for voice chat. This thing is also built like a tank, top notch build quality.
This mic is soooo great for the price. The value is incredible. I downloaded the Peace equalizer to open up it’s abilities and adjust the highs, mids, and lows and it sounds gosh darn perfect. I use it for podcasting once per week and streaming games almost ever other day. Can’t recommend it enough.
This is a dynamic microphone, so you will need an audio interface to power the signal to your PC. Do NOT use the Scarlett 2i2 Focusrite. The Mackie Producer is cheaper and a better value, and it will actually work with Windows. Trust me on this, you don’t want the headache of a Focusrite.
Hallo,
OK so its Rode, overall quality for price is great as to be expected with any Rode product IMO.
Broadcasting mics depend on the user, I stream on Twitch and went from a Blue Yeti to The PodMic.
Everyone including myself says it sounds super crisp, clear and smooth.
*PLEASE NOTE: You (essentially) need to have a channel strip or preamp with a HIGH GAIN OUTPUT. My Presonus StudioLive AR16 has +50db of gain but it waant enough. I has to drive my pre to 100% to even get the volume close to where it needed to be in OBS. I personally purchased a “Cloudlifter”, problem solved +25db of gain via Phamtom Power/Cloudlifter. You could always use a fethead as well.
Bottom line for this price you can’t beat it. As great as the Shure SM7B is there is quite a big difference in price between the two.
If you’re thinking about getting one of those maybe try this first. I love it! It’s built like a tank!
Bought as a backup to the Rode Procaster.
Both are heavy microphones. The Podmic is more manageable when you’re looking for a slightly more portable solution. I think the microphone is still probably best situated and used as a desk/studio microphone.
The sound is warm and full. I’m not a sound engineer or voiceover artist, I’m just using my ears and comparing it to the small diaphragm condenser microphones I use for “on-the-go” interviews and ad-hoc sound recordings. The Podmic is just warmer and has more presence than smaller interview mics.
It’s “horses for courses” with microphones. If I was doing an interview outdoors, or even on location and wanted the ultimate flexibility I’d still use a smaller mic, but for sit-down interviews this mic is great value and a great intro to the present, intimate, announcer voice we expect.
Great microphone for the price, arguably the best 100 dynamic microphone on the marke
The Rode Podmic is probably the best budget xlr microphone for YouTube, Streaming and Podcasting. I stream and host my own podcast, so audio quality is of very high importance. The audio is crisp and clear, the plosives are there but nothing a pop filter can’t fix.
Not on that, it looks good and has a good weight to it so you know it ain’t gonna break anytime soon.
Also make sure because of the weight you have either a strong table instead of a cheap IKEA one or just a small stand. As the clamp from a microphone arm will damage the desk.
All in all its a very good mic and pairs well with the Scarlett 2i2.
It’s a really good mic for the price, but I personally don’t care for the sound. At this price point, I preferred my AT2020 for it’s quality. Check YouTube videos for sound tests to see if it’s a sound you like. It’s solidly built at a great price, and looks beautiful. Just keep in mind that since it’s a dynamic mic, you’ll need something like a cloudlifter if you aren’t using a crazy high end interface that can output an appropriate dB gain.
We already use RDE Procaster Broadcast Dynamic Microphone as our main Podcast mics for the three main hosts. We wanted something less expensive and just as good for Guests. The PodMic proved to be an excellent choice for arraching to a desktop mount or to a articulating arm. Greate versitile solution for pocasters.
RODE is one of the best in microphones technology but the problem is the price. It is sold for around 100$ USD and double in Canada. Couldn’t wait for the price to drop because it’s a must have item.
The Amazon delivery was super fast and came in before the delivery date.
Worth the money spent and sounds awesome with the help of the all ready setup preset of my RODEcaster Pro.
Very Heavy, Stout Body but large super durable Mesh.
Needs power, I was clipping my Steinberg to run it without a Fethead, but with it my preamps are dialed in at about 1 o’clock and clean.
It is not a doorbuster for an SM7B by Shure but is an upgrade over similar priced mics like The Audio Technica AT2020
The mount it comes with is permanent the threads are fixed to the mic body itself, seems to hold up well as a shock mount but I would prefer if I could use one of my nicer third party shockmounts.
I would suggest a foam windscreen for it. The mesh is course and may snag a beard the plosives without a pop filter are ok, but not fantastic. I am using one from an Apex 540 which works great but am unable to find spare replacements of it unfortunately.
If your recording for Podcast or radio then you can’t go far wrong with the Procaster. The noise floor is really low and the direction means there is very little spill from other voices in the room. Depending on what other mics you’ve used it may take a little while to get used to how close you need to be to get a good signal but other than that this is a great mic.
This podcaster microphone is good and works fine, plug and play, no software to install, no techs. I use it with garage band to produce hypnotherapy recordings and the voice comes out clear. Perfect for those who are not recording engineers and can’t work out what to buy! A good competitor for the Blue Yeti, and probably a bit better.
Best mic I’ve used within its price range. Couldn’t fault it at the moment, and managed to get it on a good deal at the time. Surprisingly Amazon was cheapest at the time.
Great for recording podcasts, clear as day. Didn’t expect it to be as good, then again it is Rode so didn’t expect anything less.
Was so good I got another one 🙂
Verarbeitung ist no Plastics Studioniveau. Cheers!
Purchased this mic for my podcast and it works great.
Possibly the best condenser mic you can buy at this price point.
This is a truly great mic which we use for a very busy three-person podcast. The sound quality is exceptional, and the build quality is superb.
We have used a lot of other mics over the last two years of podcasting and this mic is by far the best mic we have used. We use it in studio and the clarity of the sound is exceptional.
We have also used these mics “on location”, interviewing on noisy film sets and in a crowded London pub. In both cases this mic isolated and almost eliminated background noise. This mic really delivers that professional “broadcast” sound.
The only downside is that these mics need a lot of gain to get the best sound out of them. We use a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface and have to have the gain cranked up to almost maximum to get a good clear signal.
The sound quality is so good that we have now bought the same mic for all three members of the team.
I purchased this to use in my podcast studio and I am quite pleased with the quality of the sound. I was surprised at how sturdy the microphone is and the product pictures don’t do it justice. I will advise a very good studio arm or microphone stand to use it with. I gave the mic a 4 star because of the need to really crank up the gain in order to capture the sound at high volume. I am not the most technical person but I would say a pre-amp audio mixer is needed to get the best out this mic.
It also does not come with an xlr cable, so it’s worth buying if you don’t already have one. I hear a lot of people compare this to the NT1A but for me, I would consider where I am recording before buying either one. The NT1A is a condenser mic which is extremely sensitive, while the Procaster is a dynamic that does not capture as much of the ambient sound, hence making it more suitable to record in an environment that is not sound-proofed.
I have also noticed that you definitely need to direct the sound (in my case voice) straight into the mic and not the sides, s the loss of sound is significant. That is not a negative but rather be noted for information.
The Procaster is a wonderful mic with great quality.
Recently my Blue Yeti decided to die (Even though I have not used it much).
I then bought this Procaster and it has been amazing.
The Quality is great and it does what I need it to do.
I was worried I would need to keep this about 1cm away from my mouth for it to sound good – But I keep it roughly 5 – 10 inches away and it still sounds great. (May need to tweaking with your Mixer / software).
I do not miss the Yeti.. but I always hated that thing anyway 😀
I have worked as a disc jokey for five years and this is as clear as the mics I used years ago. I bought the podcaster after a lot of research for something that would connect straight to my Apple Mac without using audio interfaces. I am no expert but it is working well, it is immediately recognised by the device, and when I launch Garage Band I can use it and record my Hypnotherapy tracks with ease. The headphones attach to the microphone so I can hear how I sound like. Clear sound, no technical issues, and doesn’t pick up much of the noises around me, if I stay close it will focus on me. Definitely going to use it for podcasting when I get to it. I bought the little stand for it but I have to put it on a box to keep my head straight when recording, so next I will have to buy an extendable arm and drill my table….Sorry no technical specs for the audio experts. As good as Blue Yeti….
I had to decide between this and the AT2020USB+, and decided that the AT2020USB+ was better for Youtube video creation – mainly because the RODE PODCASTER is a dynamic microphone – ie. it is less sensitive (but does give better noise rejection). Windows 10 (as of Feb 2019) has a real problem with active USB microphones – check that the mics are getting enough power from the USB socket otherwise the sound appears muffled and low volume. The only USB port that worked for me was the USB-C ! Also, understand that Audacity has limitations with these types of mics and requires an ASIO driver (re-compiling Audacity with ASIO is a real pain in the bum!).
This microphone is a dynamic and so needs a strong preamp to drive it properly. Fethead are useful for this.
It’s not a studio microphone at all and has a fairly ‘middly’ Kind of sound. It focuses on the voice which is what it was designed for. The long handle is great for capturing interviews and also, with it being an omni, it really is unfussy about where you point it!
Also, because it’s an omni, you don’t have as much sensitivity to plosives and there is no proximity effect. It is also really good in the wind, where it almost seems deaf to the effects.
Well suited for spoken voice outdoors.
This is an excellent dynamic mic. It needs a lot of gain so I use a Fethead with mine and the sound is extremely natural with good rejection.
I don’t really understand Rode’s advice to speak two inches from the mic. This increases proximity effect and for my voice, it becomes a bit too boomy. I hold it about 6 to 9 inches from my mouth where it becomes a more natural listen.
Low noise as well. Bear in mind that the microphone is very heavy so you need a solid base to hold it in. I have an NT1a and the base for that suits it well.
I love this mic. It’s not the least expensive option but it’s great for the price. It sounds awesome, especially when coupled with the Fethead filter. You will also need an interface to connect it to a PC, I bought the Focusrite Scarlett Solo(a great pairing), making it an even more expensive option. You get what you pay for and this setup is just amazing.
I use this in a podcast and I think it’s an excellent sounding microphone. When I first started using it, I got several emails from listeners asking if I’d upgraded my mic, so it was definitely noticeable. One thing I’d say about it, is that it is quite bass heavy, so depending on the vibe you want, you might need to tinker with your EQ in post, but I find it to provide a very intimate and soft warmth.
Rode have always made quality mics and this is no exception. The build quality is insane, it’s heavy and feels like it’s built like a tank, every part of the mic is made from metal and there’s no plastic in sight. It might seem quite pricey if you’re new to podcasting but once you feel and hear the sound quality I think you’ll appreciate the step up from cheaper, entry-level mics. My one gripe would be the soft, leatherette carry case, which I wish had some padding, although to be honest if I dropped this thing I’d be more concerned for the floor rather than the mic, so it’s not a big deal really.
I use it plugged into a Scarlett 2i2 and before that, a Scarlett Solo and both drove it just fine, although I did have to turn the gain up to maximum, it was still silent and didn’t pick up any unwanted room noise or white noise from excessive gain. If you’re looking to get that broadcast feel to your voice and want to either upgrade your podcasting setup to something a little more professional, I couldn’t recommend this highly enough.
The microphone itself is very clear and I like that it picks up barely any background noise thanks to the (polar pattern I assume) and low volume of the microphone. The only problem I had with it was compatibility with preamp / mixer. I couldn’t seem to get enough gain for it to be audible without software. I ended up purchasing a mixer and it seems great when paired with it.
Took my time testing this as I wanted a good fit for my studio. Great vocals but very heavy. Have to yank up the audio to 70% gain so expect some noise. Solid as a rock but definitely needs a windshield to get the sound just right.
Works perfectly with my Zoom H6. The only downside is the weight which really needs a good shock mount! Unfortunately, the only one that seem good enough is the Rode.
So expect to invest in the entire Rode eco-system but worth it for audio quality.
LOVE THIS MIC. Great for interviews especially. Pics up sound decently in a noisy environment and very easy to plug in and get on with it. Feels like I don’t need to shove it right in their face to pick up sound so avoids pops. Nice shape and heft to it too and come with a little protective casing – soft casing, not hard. Of course, you need to purchase lead and recording unit separately. I plug it into Zoom H5 and it works very well.
I bought the Podcaster as an upgrade from the Blue Yeti I had been using up until now and while I am decently happy with the new mic, it is not the unquestionable upgrade I was hoping for and has actually given me a new found respect for the Yeti.
Advantages of the Podcaster:
Being a dynamic microphone, the Podcaster is much less sensitive to ambient noise and reverb compared to the Yeti.
The slimmer design of the Podcaster means that it can fit standard shock mounts which the Yeti cannot.
The built-in pop filter that works pretty well most of the time although it can be overwhelmed if you are very close to the mic.
Both microphones are ridiculously heavy and I even had to buy a new boom arm since my old one (which could just about manage the Yeti) could not carry the Podcatser.
Disadvantages of the Podcaster:
There is no physical gain control knob on the microphone and since it is a USB mic, there is no gain boost option in the windows 10 recording settings. This means that I need to get pretty close to be able to record at the volume I am used to.
No physical mute button.
Headphone jack is vastly inferior to that of the Yeti. a) it’s mono only, playing both channels to both ears at all times and b) it causes a constant and very audible white noise in your headphones (even with the physical volume knob turned to 0 and the volume turned off on the PC).
The Podcaster only has one polar pattern while the Yeti can be switched between four different ones.
The voice recording quality of both microphones is pretty much the same to my ears. I was expecting to sound better over the Podcaster, given that it boasts about its professional recording quality but to me, this is not the case.
Taking all of these factors into account, I think the only advantage that the Podcaster has going for it is that a dynamic mic fits my current needs more than a condenser mic does. The significantly higher price is not justified by the generally inferior versatility and equivalent recording quality compared to the Yeti. Nevertheless, both mics are great and therefore, four stars.
WOW!! What an improvement over my previous Sennheiser Mic which I had to turn up full on the mixer and the sound quality was never that good. This mic is just what I needed for my studio, works perfectly, looks the business, good build quality and sounds terrific and I don’t need to buy a preamp with it as the gain on my Pioneer mixer is more than enough. You cannot go wrong with this make of mic – if you are thinking about buying one….go for i
As expected it’s a pretty fantastic microphone, not much new to be said here.
I do have some warnings though, this thing needs gain, so be sure you have a good preamp to combo with it. Had to turn the gain up to 8/10 on a D-PRE preamp and it sounds goood.
Also I’m not sure if I’m an isolated case, but mine had some jerkyness in the XLR connector and later found out the little XLR socket at the bottom of it wasn’t tightly screwed and could be pulled out of the microphone casing if not careful. It was easily fixed by screwing it in with a small flathead screwdriver.
This mic delivers spoken voice sound on a par with mics costing at least twice as much.
You will need lots of gain to get a solid level from the mic. I have to turn the input on my Konnekt 24D all the way up and then boost the level in OBS which I use to stream. However, even with all that gain I hear no hiss. I also need to have mic very close to my mouth (which I do via a clip onto desk boom arm), but it can be placed far enough away such that pop and plosives are not audible without the need for an additional pop shield. That being said I don’t shout down the mic.
The necessary positioning of the mic and its design is very good at rejecting any external noise. I live by a very busy road and no traffic noise is picked up, except the sirens of the occasional emergency vehicle a bit.
Great sound. Very please with the performance of this mic
Love my microphone works well with my Mac, good quality sound!
I’m very impressed with this microphone.
This was my first purchase of both a professional standard microphone and a microphone for use in non-studio environments. I wasn’t sure as to wheter it would be fit for purpose having seen numerous testing videos, I used it in a convention environment and most testing videos showed it outside on a roof top or somewhere similar, where there was substantial background noise, but quite a distance away.
It far out-performed my expectations, not only were my vocals clear but it cut out a lot of the background noise too, the only thing I had to do it post was to split the audio and send it down both channels, this was only because I was using a XLR to 3.5mm jack as my camera only takes 3.5mm audio. XLR records in mono whereas 3.5mm is stereo. But beyond that there was little-to-no post-production required on the audio output by this microphone.
I may only use this a few times a year at different expos/conventions I got to, however I’m superbly impressed by its quality and thus would say it is well worth the price.
