Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this because it was the best make and longest reach of all the extending chainsaws I looked at.
I thought the weight would be fine for me (a woman of 5′ 4″) but sadly I’m finding it too heavy, which means that sometimes it ‘kicks back’ and throws it off balance which sends me backwards.
The weight problem isn’t helped by the fact that the strap, which is meant to help with the weight, is far too long for me and not able to be shortened enough without the shoulder pad being A. in the wrong place, and B. unable to thread the strap buckle through it!
This in turn means that I can only just reach the TWO triggers that you have to press simultaneously to get it to work, they are also quite far apart.
I have checked on the Ryobi shop (on Amazon) to see if they can suggest how to either shorten the strap, move the shoulder pad or supply a shorter one but there is no telephone number sadly.
It’s a great piece of kit.. and would be even better if I was 8″ taller.
I do wish manufacturers would realise that women do like to do their own jobs nowadays and say whether an item is suitable for a woman..better still, make the same item with women in mind!! PLEASE.
I really needed one this length but now find I can’t use the full extension anyway and, having used it, could no longer return it.
Hence the four starssorry Ryobi. BUT, it does do the job and is quite powerful, just more suited to men.

Bought a whole set of Ryobi ONE+ tools following a shoulder injury as could no longer use petrol ones due to the weight. This is brilliant for trimming high branches and easy on the arms.

Good bit of kit and I’ve cut through quite a few branches at height up to about 4 or 5 inches thick (it probably could do larger).
The only gripe I have is that the safety catch/interlock, could be a little easier to operate.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe poles take a little getting used to when fitting together but worth the effort. I have deducted 1 star from battery life only because I got through a 5ah battery in about an hour of admittedly hard use. The pluses are multiple in that it is easy and safe to use (if you follow the instructions) and can cut up to 4m high and up to 6 inches in girth of tree trunk. The blade is “pre-canted” by 30 degrees so no need to push down on the pole to exert force but cuts by pulling slowly towards you.
Great product for anyone with high hedges or small trees to maintain but if cutting through thick branches regularly bring a spare battery

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a great tool and it’s done a lot of work already. 5Ah battery lasts longer than I can work continuous.
As delivered 2 rivets had punched through in one connector. I had to drill these and replace. Seems to use a LOT of chain oil…

Great item and easy to use. Cuts really well but starts to feel a little heavy after a few minutes use as it’s not as light as I expected. Still a good buy and does what I wanted it to do.

Once I got used to connecting the each segment, it worked like a dream for height. Not so good in confined bushes and trees but worth the effort. I worked for three hours and didn’t flatten my 5ampH battery. It still had some life in it.

Fantastic product. It is a little flimsy when at full extension but this is inherent by design. Chews through small to medium sized branches and I saved 900 by doing it myself! Highly recommend

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersLike many, I carried out a lot of research before going with a cordless brand as no doubt I’ll convert all of my tools from AC. The pole saw was the first, bought as a starter kit and overall, disappointing.
The saw itself is highly capable and I believe it’s an Oregon, so all good there.
However, link that to a floppy, unweildy extension and it wasn’t looking good.
Good thing I only had some minor pruning to do. Wrong.
Some comedian at Ryobi decided to pair this tool with a 2AH battery. After cutting through six branches, it quit and needed recharging. Realising this would go on, I tried buying a 5 or ,6AH variant, not Ryobis fault, it’s Easter Sunday.
Many charges later, I’m almost done.
I have, apart from Ryobis thinking, to question the many reviewers praising this package. It is a very poor set up.
Once I’ve got a more powerful battery. I’ll try the impact wrench. If is equally flawed, it will be going back.

The unit is good at height, shame you can’t use a short version once you’ve cut down the branches at height. There’s no small chainsaw from ryobi as far as I could tell.
Not sure about the foam in the chain oil filler, lost it inside once. Otherwise works well, cuts reasonably sized branches.

Great for amateur tree pruning in the garden. Takes a bit of practice to learn how much pressure to put down on the cut, but very efficient in action.

More often than not products don’t live up to expectations. The opposite could be said for this. It works really well, and I found that I have used it more than my Bosch 40cm chain saw.
As other reviews have stated the fibreglass pole is likely to be the weak point; and the fact that the lubrication leaks out if the pole is not propped up is also a pain.
It drinks oil. The small tub provided didn’t last long, so I’ve been using the same Bosch AKE biodegradable oil as for my bigger saw, and it seems fine.
Would I recommend this tool: without hesitation.

I used mine to cut high twigs and branches from my apple tree where I only needed the one extension
which was great, easy to hold and control but when I added the two extensions it became quit heavy and
A bit unstable, hard to control, but then I’m in the September of my years maybe not as strong and robust
    as I was.
apart from that it did the job

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUsed this whilst clearing some very unpleasant and overgrown brush which had a lot of Berberis in it: the thorns from Hell.

Pole mounted stand off mini chainsaw proved very useful and cuts well

    Few points:

Get adequate amounts of chainsaw oil. Uses quite a lot

Clear out accumulated debris under drive cover regularly

Chain adjustment needs to be watched.

Much, much better when used with 5.0Ah battery in terms of balance and obviously endurance.

I had a tree that needed some branches removing, too high to reach with the saws I had without using ladder. This was a bit heavy but resting saw on top of branches (as per instructions) meant less weight to hold and a very quick, neat cut.

I needed to reduce an oak tree in size as had grown to almost 40 foot high and was blocking light into my garden. Now not saying this was easy, and I had to use this tool whilst at the top of a high ladder (not recommended) but it did the job perfectly. The tree is now just under 20 feet high and less than half its original width. Only observation would be is the pole is too flexible and could do with being a little sturdier.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersA great tool, that has done it’s job well. My only concern is that it does bend if a lot of pressure is applied, so the pole connectors could be tighter. Would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for that as the actual saw unit works very well.
In hindsight, I wish it could be made even shorter, but it is good at what it was designed for.

I bought this to prune back some fairly substantial apple and sycamore trees with branches up to 6 inches thick. Have now used this on and off over a period of several months. I was pleasantly surprised how this was able to reach and easily cut through the branches with relative ease. Horizontal branches would cut just with the saw resting on them with no extra effort needed. Make sure to check the tension before starting new cuts. I found the oil system worked well. I recommend a 5ah battery else have a spare battery charged up as backup, but I was able to use a 2ah battery for over 25 mins no problem.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat product. This pruning saw will easily cut 3 inch diameter branches. It has a fibreglass extension handle which simply screws in to give the tool its maximum length. Some assembly is required but it’s very easy. The chain on mine was glued in with transit lubricant which needed to be removed. A squirt of WD-40, or similar, does the job.
There is a small bottle of Chain and Bar lubricant included. The reservoir on the chain section needs to be filled before use. The only thing which would make it perfect would be a small handle to convert it to a smaller unit to cut up what has been cut down. This wounded to be an optional extra due to the cost, as it would require a shorter trigger handle.

Does what it needs to do. Cut through and made light work of tree cutting. I keep the chainsaw upright in its box as it is supposed to continue to leak out the chain bar oil when not in use. Bought this with the battery and charger as the standard pack was without either. Well made and worth the money.

I bought this tool to help me prune an out of control laurel hedge.
I was able to prune back the “green” portions of the hedge using a manual shears.
However, when I came across the “brown” growth, the shears was no good, i needed something else.
The Royobi tree pruner is a complete “weapon” of a tool, i’m very impressed.
There are 3 lengths to the tool, trigger, chain, and middle extention.
I didn’t need to use the middle extention portion, so total length was about 2.3M, but can be used up to 4M length.
Because I bought this Royobi tool, I have since bought other Royobi tools.
    I loved it.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersWith the extension pole you can really reach/cut the top of the tree before chopping the lower section. This is really useful. The 2.0Ah battery is sufficient to get you going and last long enough to cut a medium size tree into lots of small pieces. The saw head end is not too heavy and the pole does bend slightly when you pull down to cut. Overall it’s a fantastic tool for chopping up trees/wood. I have a Bosch nano saw which is useful but way under power in comparison. So far no leaking of oil. However I did leave the little sponge in the oil reservoir, not sure if that needs to be taken out.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis is a pretty good piece of kit. It does cut through thickish branches; the failings are probably user issues (I’m 5ft 3) and it would probably be a bit easier for someone a bit taller and stronger than me,and I’m pretty strong for my size I think!? Also if my arms were a bit longer then that might help, but I’d look odd if they were any longer! 🙂
Expectations are important too – I think I was expecting something more like the results from a serious business chain saw, but this isn’t that. However as a hedge/tree branch trimmer it is good and I’m kind of glad it isn’t full on chain saw style. This has meant I can get some jobs done on higher branches and lopping some tall trees that I otherwise would be leaning into for hours with a handsaw; and you can’t really fault that!

Better than I’d hoped, a competent chainsaw on a long pole which has enabled me to safely prune and even completely take down a medium sized tree that I couldn’t safely fell whole.

Great item, got it in the Black Friday sale so was chuffed to bits with price. Its pretty long reach and has an attachable middle to make it longer. My only criticism is that it would be nice to be able to shorten it for eg attach the saw end to only one pole as then it would be a handy chainsaw for close reach items.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI love this lopper! Effortless removal of branches at heights that would otherwise require a ladder or work platform. It’s relatively light in use and the 2.5Ah battery will give you over 30 cuts. Like other Ryobi tools in the range, it’s well made and thought-out. I now have this and a Ryobi pole hedge trimmer in an effort to get away from petrol powered tools. I was fortunate enough to get a free battery as a result of an offer before Christmas, so can keep working when the battery dies. No regrets so far!

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersThis pruner comes in three sections, motor at the top, an intermediate optional section in the middle and the battery and trigger at the bottom enabling it to be used at two lengths. The pole itself appears to be made of a glass reinforced plastic tube with the connectors riveted in place, this makes the pole a bit wobbly particularly at the joints and I would suspect this is where any failure would occur either structurally or electrically, time will tell on that one.

I have used mine with the 5.0AH lithium battery pack and found it very effective trimming back some very large branches about 150mm dia. which is much more than it was designed for. Battery life is good & it kept going all day on the same battery pack.

The chain oiler is irritating as this is a simple drip feed, the saw needs to be used, transported and stored in the upright position otherwise the oil will trickle out . If you lay the saw down even for a short while it will dribble oil as soon as you pick it up, usually all over the operative, keep it upright and its OK.

Generally its a very good piece of kit, its light enough to use easily but has enough weight on the head to achieve a good cut without having to apply additional pressure providing the chain is sharp, but that applies to all chainsaws.

If you already have the Ryobi battery pack this pruner is a no brainer, its good value for the money and does exactly what it was designed for, yes the oil can be messy but its manageable, would I buy it again ? Definitely.

    Pro’s:
Very lightweight, no trying to start and warm up a petrol version, low maintenance, easily cuts multiple small branches up to about 10cm. The extension pole is very handy. My 4amp/hr batteries last ages.
    Cons:
The chain needs a lot of lubrication, maybe 4 tank fills in a 2 hour job, but this is quite normal.
The oil tank can take ages to fill if the oil is cold , unless you use the lightest chain oil possible, otherwise you put a tiny bit in and it takes ages for it to trickle through the gauze filter, you wait 20 seconds for it to filter through before you put a tiny bit more in, rinse and repeat about 15 times before the tank is full.
I wish you could use it as a small chainsaw, but the minimum pole length means you can’t use it for cutting branches right in front of you, you have to be at least 1.5 metres away.

Good value if you have already bought into Ryobi one system and have invested in a battery. Bought this and associated chainsaw to try and keep on top of several willow trees.
Easy to assemble and worked first time to coppice several branches; largest about 4-5 inches in diameter. can be a bit unwieldy at full extension but with a little perseverance does the job.

Used it to cut back some high over-hanging heavy hedge / bush. Bit tiring on the arms to keep it at the height and you have to make sure no one in vicinity in case you bring the saw down quickly. I had to make several passes to prune back the over-hanging growth, don’t know if a hedge cutter would have been better. I already had 5 amp-hour batteries and these lasted well. Came with a small bottle of chain saw oil which nearly emptied just to fill the oil compartment the once. After finishing my cutting I had to disassemble the saw as twigs had got under the housing. The instructions weren’t that clear about how to do this, you would need to do this also to replace the chain.

Only used it once so far on a cherry tree, it made light work of a job that would have taken ages and had me hanging off a ladder trying to saw branches in a dangerous way! this reached 4metres without trouble. It handles best in the shorter mode (about 2.5m) for most jobs but the extra reach is a boon it’s just a tiny bit end heavy and whippy at full stretch.
    Very pleased with it.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI was skeptical about this product before reading reviews praising it. They are true. This is truly an exceptional product.

Essentially its a small chain saw on the end of a pole. But this is battery operated and I expected it to not be powerful enough. Wrong, it is more than enough to cut through the Beech and Holly bushes that were starting to grow into trees. It is strong enough to create a pole steady enough to reach high into a tree. It feels much safer than a petrol operated chain saw.

The directions are OK but only in pictures and no words. I wasn’t 100% that I’d interpreted the picture correctly. I was nervous. But I’d set it up correctly.

To be fair I’ve only ever had one Ryobi One product that wasn’t any good.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersSome years ago I bought a Black & Decker rechargeable hedge trimmer. It was hopeless. It was weak and wouldn’t last, no matter how long I charged it. I took it back and got a petrol device and have been wary of battery powered kit ever since. In recent years I have been using a Mountfield 5 in 1 petrol pole-trimmer which was fine initially but in recent months I’ve spent more time on trying to make it run than actually cutting. I had to do something and bought the Ryobi instead. I have several Ryobi 18v drills and a 5 AH Lion battery so I knew Ryobi kit was good and that I had a decent battery available. This pole trimmer is well built and highly effective. It is just as powerful as my petrol driven Mountfield but much more reliable. Press the button and it works every time. It will happily Munch it’s way through 3 inch hedging branches without any trouble. It’s also quiet and only makes a noise when it’s cutting. Battery life is excellent and I have yet to run out of power mid-job. I’m now fully sold on Ryobi electric garden kit. It just works.

Battery kit has come of age

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAs others have said this is well able to cut 100-120mm branches. This may be due to the quality of the chain supplied, time will tell as the chain wears. The motor is powerful and is best mated with a 5 aHr battery which helps balance the saw. Again, as others have pointed out, the oiling system is very basic consisting of a drip-feed mechanism which continues to drip when the tool is stored. However, this is true for all chain saws whether petrol or electric so putting the head on a piece of thick cardboard will absorb the oil. Overall very happy with tool as it fills a gap between my 14″ petrol saw and my Echo 2400 long reach pruner which is very heavy.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was surprised by its ability to cut through substantial branches, but i find it’s hard to make neat cuts as the machine is quite too heavy, making it hard to undercut at the outset and creating a tendency to slip, causing a tear, as the cut is completed. But definitely worth having if you have a modest woodland.

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersWorks fine and my drill battery lasts longer than I was expecting. Within the first couple of days I had problems with the chain coming adrift until I had discovered the knack and degree of retensioning required. The manual is one of those international text-less sheets of drawings. This pole pruner paid for itself within its first day of use in my garden doing some heavy duty pruning of an apple tree and large shrubs compared to ‘paying a man’.

Be sure to wear a safety helmet with visor and ear defenders.

But note: this pole pruner does not do the work of a qualified tree-surgeon on serious tree work where the heavier scale of cutting and safety are a real issue. Don’t mess with chainsaws, they are very dangerous tools and serious accidents happen in a fraction of a second to the untrained and unwary.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersI have just started using this Pruner having recently bought a few Ryobi ONE tools etc. In short it seems brilliant. The tool is well made and should last. – we have a high end ‘requirement’ living on an (what was) an old farm – now holiday lets – with lots of farm track, trees, hedges, grass, etc etc etc. in the North Wales outdoors where everything grows!

Grumbles – well, Ryobi instructions are basically pictures only plus a few words – but I am familiar with Chainsaws , which is what this is – a mini chainsaw – and have already adjusted the Pruner chain (as you would need to after a first use). However many buyers, possible converts away from petrol/electric corded garden power tools may struggle with understanding their new purchase and crucially how to maintain as best possible. Maintenance is easy, like everything when you know how. eg make sure you ensure that the chain oil always topped up – Ryobi give you a small bottle which I used today alone. Wipe the chain afterwards with oil and carefully replace the plastic scabbard over the chain. It just needs some care whether taking off or putting back on afterwards.

Ryobi do need to improve their instructions which mainly consist of health and safety. A few words would be good to explain/support the pictures – how you do it… but like many global selling manufacturers products, words are being dropped to save translations presumably.
The Pruner was simple to assemble. (I had challenges with the Ryobi brush cutter though where you had to put on a nut Anticlockwise to tighten – seemed unnatural but then I realised that was what the picture was showing me ).

The Pruner easily cuts branches that are 4-6 inches, steady as you go supporting the tool……. It does what it claims. Even without the extension you can get pretty high wood etc.

My 4 amp battery will last ages when fully charged.

This will get a lot of use, I think it will last and at around 90 is good value in my view.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI already have a Ryobi Expand-It pole saw, and liked it apart from the fact I can never get the two stroke engine to start, and once running to stay running. In frustration I decided to give this One+ pole saw a try, and I am SO glad I did.

The Expand-It engine made a frightful din, and the vibrations would send my hand numb. By comparison the One+ saw is lighter, quiet in operation, and cuts through boughs just as well, and with the extension pole it is longer as well for those hard to reach branches.

I only have the small 1.3Ah battery, but it is quite adequate to get a substantial amount of work done.

I have only two small gripes. Firstly despite the manual being half an inch thick in 20 odd languages. It does not actually tell you anything useful, like how to tension the chain or take the scabbard off. Secondly getting the scabbard off is really hard. A little plastic stud has to be forced over the bar. There is a real danger of cutting your hand trying to force it off. I cut the stud shorter to make it easier.

My Expand-It pole saw is now up for sale.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought this after buying other Ryobi products when I required having a tree pruned. Normally we have tradesmen do it, but this time after receiving quotes in excess of 300, I thought I would have a try myself.

First off, as other reviews have stated, this product does not extend to 4 meters. But I knew this before purchasing it .

    Good Points
The performance of it was amazing. I was able to prune my tree much quicker than using loppers. It was able to carve through all the branches I tried it on (up to 4” thick) with ease.
I used a Ryobi RB18L40 ONE+ 4.0 Ah Lithium Battery, 18 V & it lasted ages. I filled up an estate car’s worth of branches before having to recharge it (It didn’t run out, it was just running low)

    Bad Points
It was heavier than expected when using the extension. There is a strap to help hold it, but for the very high branches, I had to use my arms. I am 6ft 2” of average build and this was tiring after a while.

The instructions were poor. At one point the chain came off, I had to resort to YouTube before I worked out how to re-seat it. This only happens once and it is easy thing to rectify (when you know how)

Would I recommend it? It would depend on the buyer. and the height of the tree to prune. But I was very impressed with it and will definitely use it again. Both of my neighbours came out to look and were surprised how good it was (they were doubters of using a battery powered pruner beforehand, now they too are converts)

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI only received this saw today and have given it a quick try. I have several of the Ryobi One+ tools now – note that the saw comes “bare” without battery or charger. I have a few Ryobi Lithium Ion batteries and the beauty of the One+ system is that they fit all of the tools in the range different AH ratings giving different run times. I have found 4AH to be a good balance of price/run time.

Back to the saw – it comes with an extension pole but I initially used it without. The saw comes with a small bottle of oil to fill the reservoir – you’ll soon need more. The saw zipped through 4 to 5 inch branches on a tree which had got out of hand and in ten minutes I had transformed it :)) there’s a lot of power there and the tool also comes with a clip on strap which is useful as it can feel a bit top heavy due to the chain saw mechanism on the end.

All in all already very impressed and the tool will pay for itself in no time given what would need to be paid to bring someone in.
