The 4 keys formula for third wave specialty coffee at home.

|---|---|---|---|
1. Rich, full flavourFull-bodied coffee with rich and complex flavours is created using the right dose of 19-22g of freshly ground beans. This dose allows the coffee to fully express the incredible aroma, intense flavours and distinctive character of the coffee, for a true cafe quality result. Anything less than the optimal dose results in a weak and watery taste experience. | 2. Perfectly balanced tasteSweet, delicious and nuanced flavour notes begin with precise control over water temperature. Digital temperature control (PID) technology precisely controls water temperature for a perfectly balanced coffee extraction, giving you the control and consistency for delicious tasting coffee every time. | 3. Irresistible bodyAn opulent, creamy and caramel-coloured espresso starts with low pressure pre-infusion that soaks the grinds, allowing water to pass evenly through the coffee during the high pressure (9 bar) extraction process, delivered via our 15 bar Italian pump. This results in a rich, sweet and viscous espresso. | 4. Silky, velvety mouthfeelSavour the silky taste and velvety mouthfeel of true microfoam milk. The milk is steamed with pressure that creates thousands of tiny bubbles, enhancing flavour and mouthfeel, while the temperature brings out the milk’s sweetness, exciting your taste buds, for a harmonious blend of rich, sweet milk and syrupy, golden espresso. |

Nice compact size doesn’t take up much room in my already small kitchen . Makes a beautiful coffee with even better milk wasn’t to sure about the steam arm at first but after seeing the beautiful micro bubbles in the milk i was won over. Can hold alot more coffee beans that you might think :). Would definitely recommend to any coffee lover!!!
Fantastic
This is my first coffee machine and blown away by it!! I’ve owned it for 3 months now and gets used everyday- really can’t fault it- worth every penny.
You will have to spend time to make it work for you
Watch a few videos on how this works. If you are looking for a one-push button coffee maker, then this product is not for you. If you like tinkering with your beans, play barista then it’s good fun and it has everything in one to get you started. Each bean is different though so take care and make notes!
Nice coffee . Milk steamer dial could be bette
My second Sage coffee machine.
Its is easy to use, use you have read the instructions and watched a few videos regards bean grinding , beans used etc.
My only issue is the Dial for the milk steamer, it is quite stiff, when the milk comes to temperature, can be difficult to turn to turn off the steam. Position is on the side, maybe better on the front.
Overall a nice machine for the money but could be better on the steamer dial.
Use freshly roasted coffee beans
Takes a few tries to get the right fineness of grind and quantity but once that is done making coffee is easy and the truly is consistently good.
Makes wonderful coffee
A smart looking machine that would go well in most kitchens. The machine makes lovely coffee and is not complicated to use.
The best - don't hesitate
Worth the high price (and lack of automation). Makes great espresso or americano, and is a pleasure to work with. High quality materials and premium feeling overall. One of those machines for which you can even buy cheaper coffee and still get a great taste.
Easy to set up
The machine seems well put together and the instruction book ishelpful and written in decent English – as one would expect in an Australian product. It’s too early to give a reliability rating after a mere 24 hours in use, but it makes good expresso and cappuccino. I understand from other users that the plastic seals in the steam wand have an unexpectedly short life, but it seems good value in this field.
Great machine to start off on becoming a coffee enthusias
The wife convinced me to buy this machine because it would be beneficial for all of us 🙂 I never was a big coffee person, but this machine quickly turned me into a coffee enthusiast and I can finally see and taste the difference. I’d like to say first that we bought the black one the first time but upon opening the box we realized the paint was already chipped in a few places so we sent it back. Not what you’d expect from a 600 machine. It might have been a one off, I can’t tell because the next time we ordered the silver one. This one has brushed metal part all around unlike the black one with polished metal parts. They both look great and it’s hard to say which I like better, but the silver does look a bit more durable when it comes to the paint.
As I mentioned the machine is beautiful even to me and luckily it doesn’t actually take that much countertop space. Putting it together was easy enough. This machine is pretty much complete and you should feel like you need to spend extra on gadgets. There is the coffee grinder, the steam wand, and of course the handle with 4 different portafilters. There are 2 single and 2 double sizes one for freshly ground coffee and one for ground coffee. I didn’t think there was a difference but there is. There is the tamper which magnetically attaches to the machine. That’s super handy. And there is the razor, which is a leveller, once you tamped your coffee you can use this to get any excess coffee out of the portafilter before brewing. But after we got the hang of it we rarely use it but it was helpful the first few times to help as learn just how much force to use when tamping. Oh and also the milk jug! It’s got a thermometer on it’s outside. It’s quite accurate too. Of course you can always buy a nice analogue one that will be better, but it’s more than enough to start you off!
I really like the controls, everything is well placed and straightforward to use. The buttons are all lit with a nice white light which gives it a very upmarket look. The dial in the middle is a proper pressure gauge no digital screen anywhere to be seen, it actually looks so much better than the more expensive digital ones.
Using it is easy. As I said before I never was much into coffees but my mrs used to work in a few coffee shops and learned the trade so she is quite picky when it comes to coffee. Of course it’s not going to be as good as the ones used in coffee shops but if you want a mean espresso and don’t want to leave the house this does a great job. Even though it’s a single boiler one (meaning you can’t steam and pull a shot at the same time) it’s quite fast anyway and it takes me about 8 minutes to make two coffees in the morning.
Things we didn’t like that much are the steam wand…it first seemed a bit on the short side, but that seems to be the case with all the machines available to the public and only the real professional ones have longer ones. However we got used to this pretty quickly.
Another issue we have and this is a bit concerning is the knob on the right side, this is to control the steamer. It can be turned left or right or kept in the middle. The middle option is off. Turn it right and you can draw hot water. Turn it left and it starts the steamer. Turning this knob is quite the job though. It feels very hard and sometimes it’s a real struggle to turn the thing off and it’s only 2 months old. It was fine only for a few days after it’s like that. However it doesn’t seem to get any worse so fingers crossed. We were so impressed with the machine we decided to buy another one for the office, this time went for the black one again as it was on sale. No problem with the chipped paint this time around. The steamer knob however seems to be a lot better though so again…a bit concerned for the silver one in this regard as it’s quite hard to turn.
All in all great machine which is quite easy to learn even for a complete starter like myself. QC is a bit so so with the chipped paint and dodgy knob though.
Cracking machine, just don't switch coffee beans too ofte
This is a great machine if you like good coffee and don’t want to spend thousands on a cafe quality machine. We’ve had great results but would advise finding beans you like and sticking with them for a while each time. That way you’re not having to dial in the machine each time you buy a new bag, which can get expensive. All in all would highly recommend.
Makes every coffee break a real pleasure
We’ve relied on our old percolator for nearly 50 years and I was reluctant to leave it for an Espresso machine. I was so wrong. The Sage machine makes the most delicious coffee. Now we sit down to saviour the joy rather than drinking coffee on the go around the house.
It takes a few trials to get things right but it is well worth the effort. After three days this 76 year old barista had it cracked. The hands on experience of producing the perfect cup is all part of the joy. It can’t be hurried.
My only complaint is that holding the milk jug whilst manoeuvring the steam switch is testing with arthritic hands. But we are getting the knack. The built in thermometer on the milk jug is pretty useless as it’s impossible to see. Feeling the heat build up whilst holding the milk jug is much more accurate and far easier.
Whilst this machine successfully produces coffee from beans or ready-ground coffee the results from beans are far better, smoother and more satisfying.
You will need a knock box and probably a silicon mat. More money but worth it for an easier life.
More to coffee than I thought!
Lovely bit of kit but opens a whole can of worms if you’re looking to make real genuine coffee.
You will only create a ‘real’ expresso with fresh coffee.
When I say fresh, I mean roasted in the last 4-21 days, not supermarket mass produced/roasted coffee.
You’ll need to buy little & often.
Old coffee will not make the necessary pressure for a genuine ‘creme’ expresso.
Watch the YouTube videos buy Sage before you buy to make sure you know what your doing first.
Enjoy!
We love it - but we really love coffee
You genuinely have to learn about how to make decent coffee and you also have to love coffee. Not for total novices but also, not that hard to work out. We absolutely love i
Best coffee machine around.. Love i
Bought this for my husband for Christmas and he absolutely loves it.. Found setting it up a bit difficult but managed to find what he needed on YouTube.. Haven’t actually cleaned it yet as only had it a week but it looks pretty straight forward.
I think every household needs one 🙂
Fantastic!!!!!
Amazing easy to use easy to clean and the best results give an amazing smooth coffee!!
Fantastic
I’m very pleased with this coffee machine it is easy to use I can make coffee now just like Costa I like it because you got a built in Grinder The milk jug has got his built in temperature Gauge
Fantastic machine once you get the hang of i
Everything is great but it does take some time to get the right grind/tamp if you have no prior experience. Once you find the right mix, it makes great coffees. Love the machine
Fabulous
Fast delivery and great product. Makes a great cup of coffee, easy to use & clean.
Decent piece of ki
Does the job fine, only makes expresso then you use that to make whatever. Has decent steam wand.
Just amazing!
Fresh and almost professional coffee every day. After one year, I’m struggling to find coffee from coffee shops, better than what I can brew at home.
Just the best thing I've bought in ages
What’s not to like – great machine, easy to use, makes great coffee.
Milk jug is quite small but that’s the only criticism I have.
I’m now a home barista who’s keeps mhis wife happy with cappuccinos on demand.
Great machine
Been looking at coffee machines for a few months and finally purchased this one off of a recommendation from my brother. Really loving it so far and it’s very easy to use.
Just my only complaint would be that it is pretty loud so can’t really use it early in the morning as it could potentially wake people up
This is an awesome home coffee brewing machine!
Super happy with this machine – checked out numerous YT vids showing Tips and Tricks for using this machine and after 3 calibration attempts have started making better flat whites than I can buy in any shop. Slightly overwhelming at first making sure that the tamping and grind was on point (previous machine was auto in this respect) but once I nailed it (again using YT vids), it became very simple. Five stars, super high quality for the price.
Outstanding machine
This has raised the bar on home brewing coffee, great upgrade. Now it is dialled in anyone can make a perfect espresso at the push of a butto
Barista coffee in your home, oh yeah!!
Once you mastered the fine balance between grind coarseness and infusion time, you’ll soon be enjoying perfect barista coffees at home just like me.
I really enjoyed the learning process, experimenting with different beans to learn how to get the most out of each bean by adjusting the grind coarseness. Once you’re used to the process, it gets easier and before I knew it, I felt like an expert!
Ok the pressure wasn’t perfect in the picture I took, but hey, next time it’ll be better, that’s the fun of using this machine!
Favourite bean at the moment is Lavazza Super Crema that’s buy in 1kg bags off Amazon.
10 on grind. Quantity at ‘2oclock’ (would help if there was a numbered scale on this!).
Pressure guage as verticle as possible, and out dribbles your perfect coffee shots!
Americano – at water from on board water heater.
Capacinno – the on board steamer heats up the milk to a perfect froth.
Really love this machine, best thing I ever bought! Highly recommend.
Expensive but well worth i
Have been looking at various coffee/ barista type machines for a while, most always have the odd poor review which makes me unsure over them.
This Sage machine was more than i was thinking of spending but had very good reviews on Amazon and also on the Manufactures website.
I was also lucky to speak to a local coffee supplier and they had one and swear by it.
So is it value for money, i would say yes.
Included you get various types of filters, a hot milk jug with temp indicators and various other tools.
I am in a hard water area, kettle furs up rapidly, so decided to also get an Amazon Basics water filter as well. Several of the reviews suggested this was a cheaper option than cleaning and descaling the machine (kettle looks like new with the filtered water)
It took me about a week of use and trial and error to get the machine making coffee to my satisfaction.
It takes around 3-5 minutes from turning the machine on to making an excellent cappuccino. The machine is noisy, but you get used to it and is no worse than a commercial one.
It is quite large, around 30cm x30cm and fits perfectly under the wall units and doesnt look out of place. The Stainless steel finish gives it a solid, robust look and feel.
The coffee bean hopper holds around 200gm of beans.
I won’t comment on what beans to use as that is down to individual tastes, but I have settled on some supplies by a small company producing their own blends and roasts.
Would i recommend? Yes,.
Only have another 120 coffees to go at high street shop prices to pay for i
Great coffee machine & great coffee
Pondered on whether to buy this as they are expensive. This is a quality machine easy to set up if you follow videos and makes great coffee. Makes a bit of a mess but it’s worth it as people prefer the coffee compared to Costa and Starbucks
Great Espresso Machine
Whilst this is not strictly a bean to cup machine, once you get used to using it and are setup with your beans of choice this machine produces a very good espresso, cappuccino and latte, etc. people moan about the filters but you can use other types of filtering and machine cleaners. For a not overly expensive machine I would recommend!
Honest review from a massive coffee drinker.
First off this product looks Amazing in any kitchen. I’ve given it a 4star but nearly a 5 star. I’ve had it a week now and have encountered a few issues. First off for some reason the grinder wouldn’t grind the beans for about 6 attempts, it would make the sound then I had to push the beans down which seemed a tad dangerous. It took me a whole 200g bag of coffee to get the blend/pressure right which was slightly annoying. Maybe it’s the beans I used??? I used Starbucks Espresso. I have double espresso and my wife has single and for some reason it doesn’t seem to do singles as well as doubles? I’ve tried adjusting coarseness with grind amount and seems to change every time I use it. It’s quite difficult getting it perfect every time but when the machine does it’s job correctly the taste is amazing and makes the whole house smell delicious. I’ll give it more time and keep at it. I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone.
I’m not a snob but I am a coffee fan but not a fanatic. With that tautology out of the way, the first thing to acknowledge is that this is not a full blown top of the range built like a tank Italian made espresso machine but it does make coffee as good as my local coffee shop, even if I say so myself. The learning curve can be scaled in a number of ways but the way I chose was to look at YouTube videos and demonstrations for about a month before consideration the purchase. So many that, by the end of all the watching I became rather disciplined on what to do, why I might have to do it and what might happen if I didn’t do what had to be done in the way it had to be done.
One huge deciding factor was that decent money was spent for this machine and I wasn’t going to throw that down the drain and I had every intention of getting my moneys worth and tastes worth out of it from the get go and every good cup of espresso was only going to be as good as the attention I gave it before the machine even heated up. This is where anyone, I would suggest, who wants to have the relationship with good espresso over the longest period might want to get this mindset down to perfection. Wax on wax off, so to speak.
Making espresso, I soon discovered, is a performance. A performance of graceful manoeuvres, impeccable timing, exact measure, tamping mastery and, of course, the bean. Failure at any is failure of the whole and an extraction of a mud like sludge or watery sewage that wouldn’t deserve the u-bend of an Italian brothel and the avoidance of all is the embrace the ubiquitous coffee scale and timer. Get them, now! Most of any other technical know-how you will need to acquire can be obtained from the aforementioned YouTube videos and demonstrations after which, practice, practice and more practice will bring you to where you’ll need to be. You’ll also need to buy a lot of coffee beans to get as good as you need to be to justify the outlay. Sorry but that’s how this process goes.
Other ratings, especially the poorer ones on this espresso machine, aren’t about coffee quality or taste but about poor quality control or inadequate supply of parts etc. so, if this is an anxiety for you, be sure of your absolute right to send this sucker back if anything about it fails to deliver and is part of the guarantee. Otherwise, the care for The Sage Barista Espresso Machine is your responsibility and you’ll have to make time to do it.
I back-flush the system twice each week and plan to descale it every two months using a vinegar-water mix that I’ve used for other appliances. It works at least as well as anything that can be bought here but the back-flushing tabs are dirt cheap so I use them. Isopropyl alcohol is my preferred method of cleaning the brushed stainless steel exterior and it brings it all to a showroom shine every time. Neglect of any of these routines will ensure that somewhere down the road you will regret not doing it.
So, there you have it. This is my take on The Sage Barista Express Machine and there are lots of things I haven’t mentioned here because they will be all too apparent soon after you open the box it comes in which, by the way, you should keep in case the one star reviews become real for you. Otherwise, and with a fresh coffee in my hand, Use good beans, keep good discipline and get a real Italian coffee mug if you haven’t already got one.
ciao!

Great machine
This is my second machine the last one gave me many years of service but I never cleaned it thoroughly and the jet hole in the frother clogged up causing damage
I would strongly recommend this machine
Love it!
I was a little apprehensive ordering such an expensive product through Amazon but John Lewis had been out of stock for ages so went ahead. Arrived absolutely perfect so no issues there.
Love this machine, use it many times a day, lots of reviews make it sound really complicated but once you get used to it its just routine and produces great coffee. This was an upgrade from a Nespresso machine that died after many years. I wanted something that would let me use beans or grounds and this is perfect but to be honest I only ever use whole beans now – the grinder is top quality giving great results. Love it!
You need this machine in your life!
Bought during lockdown. Can’t fault this machine. Coffee making taken to the next level. Excellent coffee has become the norm. Two kitchen gadgets I now can’t imagine ever having lived without, this and a Dyson V7 handheld vacuum. The two are actually complementary. One is good to own, the Sage, however, is essential!
Best coffee machine
Best coffee machine that I ever bought!
Like my coffees and this machine makes me very happy.
For best results do use freshly roasted coffee, I have discovered an artisan roast that have a beautiful coffee and that is the best for a good coffee!
so far so coffee
I have had coffee machines for 40 years, my first Gaggia lasted years until it went bang (after 12 years use) from there on I have had various coffee/espresso machines. But this is probably the best at the price, great machine but needs patience to set up, but once done lovely coffee.
perfec
absolutely great piece of kit, took about 3 trys to great it nailed! great coffee machine and ideal for the kids hot chocolate.
I’ve put 5 star’s for flavour but that depends on your beans, tried 3 brands now and all is grea
Hmm coffee
Great machine, takes abit if getting use to but great coffee machine
Good quality machine.
Bought this after I had to return a Solis Grind and Infuse Compact machine for grinder fault.
They were both around 500. The only thing better on the Solis was the tamper. Everything else is in a totally different class on the Sage.
Once calibrated, it's an amazing coffee machine
Having previously owned cheaper machines in the 150-250 price range, this machine was a revelation. The quality of espresso it can produce is extremely high, but it must be properly calibrated for a given type of coffee bean first or it’ll produce very poor results. There are some fantastic video guides out there for calibrating the grind, dose amount, and shot timer, and the pressure gague really helps when calibrating.
If you enjoy the process of making coffee, the barista express is fantastic. It takes all of the effort out of the boring or annoying parts of making coffee but is still a manual coffee machine that lets you enjoy the process once it’s fully set up. It automatically grinds and dispenses the right dose and times the perfect shot based on volume throughput, but you still manually tamp it and do your own latte milk etc so you still enjoy the coffee making process.
The steam wand is also a great stainless steel one that’s easy to clean, no little plastic bits to have to clean after each use. The group head also has a solonoid valve and automatically extracts excess water to make a clean coffee ground puck for easy disposal. The whole thing also uses a water filter so the quality stays consistent regardless of water hardness (as long as you replace the filters when they need it). It’s one of the easiest machines I’ve ever had to clean and maintain.
If you’re getting this machine, my advice would be to order a kilo of whatever beans you plan to use in it and watch through some of the more popular videos online for calibrating the machine and techniques for milk frothing (as this is a little different to many other machines). It’ll just take you an afternoon and you’ll throw away a lot of bad espresso shots and dodgy milk but eventually it’ll be perfect and then it’s consistent every time from then on with very little effort. I’ve barely ever needed to recalibrate even when switching beans, as long as they are the same rough roast.
Love it! Best espresso ever!
Love this baby, it has such pressure power that the espresso comes out smooth and rich. I’m using freshly roasted beans from Rave coffee (Signature blend No1) with Oat milk. Frother is also very good and the machine came with a temperature indicator which is very helpful. If you live in England you can find good espresso on the high street very rarely, it’s usually burnt. With this machine you will fall in love with espresso (and you’ll understand how it usually should taste). Highly recommend and do follow the instructions for good espresso on the machine manual or online workshops.
Great coffee machine
So overall this machine is fantastic. Owned for 3 months prior to writing this. So the steam wand is not that powerful which allows you more time to perfect your milk steaming. There are 16 outer and i think 8 or 10 inner grind settings. For the price i don’t think you can go much better. Unless you want separate machines for grinding and brewing. You do need to know what your doing. Be prepared to waste some coffee dialling the machine in. And you may want some digital scales too!
Takes a bit of getting used to but then makes fantastic coffee
Bought this as a birthday gift for my son, he loves i
Great machine
Great so far, not the best instructions, and still learning, could have done with a video tutorial. I just use the one filter, don’t see the point in the others. The pressure gauge needle doesn’t move so can’t see the point in that, but I could be doing something wrong. I’ve mastered my coffee despite lack of help. Great machine
