The first thing you notice is that the build quality even being an all plastic product is just amazing. Comfort is just sublime and the sound then just blows your mind. I’ve heard many phones everything from the cheaper Japanese brands to seriously expensive ones from several makes. But these although not as good as those expensive ones it is not far off. But they really blow those cheaper ones out of the water. I can listen to these for hours with no fatigue. I really recommend these.
I loved these! So comfortable and so impressed with the sound that comes out, definitely worth checking out!
TL:DR Very sturdy with impressive sound range and quality.
I bought these upon the recommendation of a colleague of mine for audio-video editing and gaming along with listening to different soundtracks. The range of these headphones along with the build quality and box display is extremely impressive. The lows have a power you can feel while still maintaining very responsive and clear highs. The ear cups are sturdy yet comfortable to the point of I almost forget I’m wearing them as the open-back design still allows me to hear most ambient sounds at lower volumes. The headband is a very comfy leather that doesn’t grab and snag at your hair. As someone with moderately long hair, I can certainly appreciate that. The long cord with the large connecter (6.3mm) and standard 3ft 3.5mm connecter allow great versatility when working in the studio and at home. They are rugged enough for constant transport between work and home. The color is also a great change from the normal crazy RGB or just straight black headphones. These will certainly be my daily drivers for years to come.
Love the product, I know nothing about audio – I heard this headset had good sound imaging (which is key for gaming… knowing when the footsteps/gunfire is behind you vs. to the left/right) and that part has been true, it does a great job at mapping out where sound is coming from in videos/movies/games.
As someone who never gave much thought to sound, I can see how this is the slippery slope towards audiophiledom. At first, all I could notice was how rich the sounds were, that there was depth to appreciate which I hadn’t really heard before on my other headphones.
Then time went on, and I realized I began to notice when sound (from other sources) was trash: My earbuds, other peoples speakers, etc. rather than noticing the nice quality sound from my senn HD; this higher quality had become my new benchmark.
So yes, these headphones (from a layman) are fantastic sounding, and comfortable for long hours because of how little weight it places on your head…
however beware, the slippery slope towards stingy, audiophile behavior, you’ve been warned.
I bought these headphones mainly for use on PS5. I’m not a big fan of closed back designs, and as as I don’t use headphones in public or at an office, I do not need the isolation that closed back designs offer.
Open back designs tend to offer a larger fuller soundstage, and this is great with PS5 3D audio. It also means I can sit playing Returnal whilst my wife listens to the Radio, and I can feel fully immersed in the game, yet also hear the radio and hold a conversation with my wife, hear the front door or my phone etc.
I bought the Ivory ones and love that classic old school look, I think they look fantastic, but if your tastes are boring and you believe all electronics should be black, then amazon have a special model in black (shudder, lol). These are very light, have extremely comfortable ear surrounds and have a good headband, so after a few minutes you barely know you are wearing them and its easy and comfortable to wear them for extended periods.
My wife has a very small head – often having to buy children’s sizes if she’s buying a hat, but these fitted her well and felt secure, and they adjust well, so they feel equally at home on my (much larger) head.
Sound quality is very good, I only have some Senheiser HD555’s to compare them with,. and as you’d expect they sound considerably better, though they share a similar sound signature. The response seems pretty flat to me and they have good bass extension without exhibiting bass bloom. For music testing I plugged them into a Naim Unity Atom and was pleased by the results.
If you are an audiophile looking for the last word in musicality then I’m afraid you need to go further up the range in my opinion, and spend considerably more cash. I use floor standing speakers that cost over 2K – these headphones cant compete with my speakers, but I would not expect them to!
If you are not the kind of person who spends many K on your hi-fi, then I think these headphones will impress you as they are starting to come up to audiophile territory and have an engaging sound that’s enjoyable to listen to.
I’m very happy with these and I hope this write up helps someone considering them.
P.S. Even though I’m using these for gaming, please note they do not have a mic. I’ve never heard a gaming headphone that sounded good, so I’m getting headphones that sound right first and then I’ll source a mic!
Good sound quality, very enjoyable, and most important very comfortable to wear, and they stay in place
I bought these as my 598s started to fall apart from years of consistent use, as well as some abuse from a child.
I was at first hesitant to upgrade as I was afraid they were so similar to the 598s I wouldn’t notice a sound difference, but my 598s started to enter such a poor condition that I had no choice. Immediately I noticed the build quality of these are so much better, the 598s when first inboxes felt cheap in comparison to the 599s. These have more solid construction, more comfortable padding on the ears and head, and the stitching feels like it’ll hold much longer.
Sound quality feels crisper. Not substantially but enough to be noticeable, while still staying close to the 598 sound. Sound stage is also similar but better. Overall, sound quality can be described as “the 598s, but improved slightly”.
I would easily recommend these if you’re still rocking the 598s, the upgrade was worth it.
I needed a pair of headphones that would not hurt my ears after long wearing sessions, thought id give these a try, best decision of my life, feels like you’re wearing nothing at all
After tons of research, I ended up getting these for a Yamaha hybrid piano (avantgrand) with binaural sampling. I know others have purchased much higher impedance phones with success with these pianos but these were supposed to have a very neutral sound, be lightweight, and be easy to drive. I am really pleased with them for that purpose. I don’t have to turn up the volume when playing using phones vs the native speakers. I don’t know if something less expensive would have done the same but these are pretty spot on. I doubt I would be able to get any better sound that I would notice (as a musician but not an “audiophile”) without adjusting the rest of the setup.
I get TMJ tightness and I do need to make the headphones sit a little high to not sit right on my TMJ but I only notice it sometimes because they are decently lightweight and I can wear them in a way that it never bothers it at all. I can wear them playing for hours without ear fatigue or getting hot.
Only “problems” with these headphones –
You will want to ditch all lower quality headphones and ear buds as sub par. I’m more happy tethered to a cord vs. the convenience I long sought with my wireless earbuds. Apparently, feeling like I’m in the audience of my favorite comedians is worth all the cords and things touching me. I thought these would just be for the piano but they are now my everything headphones.
You will now clearly hear the difference between recordings made for mass market and professional high quality recordings. Not every producer records the quality you would expect. It took a quite a few swipes through my music collection before I went “woah” (Disney FTW).
Swapping out the cords is not intuitive and I had to look it up and practice to get it right.
Altrimenti lasciate stare.
I’d like to call myself an audiophile, although it’s not by choice. I am very sensitive to sounds and notice the slightest imbalances. I like my audio a certain type of way and can never settle for anything that sounds less than ideal.
For years I used gaming headsets. They have served their purpose, but you really miss out on quality sound. I upgraded to these beauties from a Razer Kraken Pro V2 and the difference is night and day, especially using an EQ (Equalizer APO+Peace) and DAC/AMP. It made me question why I didn’t buy these sooner. I have tried these headphones both with my on-board PC audio, and with a DAC/AMP (FiiO E10K). While they will work well enough without a DAC/AMP, to really get the full potential out of these cans I’d recommend a quality DAC/AMP as well.
If you are serious about your audio, ditch the gaming headset, or whatever other budget headphones you are using and buy these. You will be happy you did.
I don’t think these were advertised as noise-canceling, so I really can’t blame them for completely failing in that department. However, I was kind of disappointed either way. My husband and I both work from home and have very different tastes in how we maintain focus. For me, I either need silence or brown/white noise while my husband prefers to listen to music or podcasts/YouTube videos. We take turns wearing headphones so neither one of us has to always be the one sequestered away inside our head. However, especially considering my personal preference for focus, it was a pretty big bummer to realize these don’t cancel sound. At all.
Still, if you aren’t in need of sound cancellation, these would be a great pair of headphones. The sound quality is decent (not the best, but pretty good) and their best quality is that they’re super comfortable. I wear glasses and a lot of headphones will cause my glasses to shift just enough that I’m no longer looking through the correct place on the lenses and often wind up with a headache or nausea/dizziness. These don’t do that at all. They fit snug and comfy.
Comoda, calda, accondiscendente…
Leggera, pads morbidi, padiglioni generosi, archetto flessibile.
Sui materiali, tutta in plastica, pelle inclusa…
Sono piuttosto suscettibili all’impedenza d’uscita.
Nun, zur Musikwiedergabe;
sound is decent, but you buy these to wear with no fatigue. great for gaming
Been exploring and enjoying a lot of classical and opera during this pandemic and listening over my usual Bluetooth devices just doesn’t cut it. Just had to think that I was missing definition, especially with the strings and lighter percussion. I was right. After doing a reasonable search, I found these recommended highly for classical by a few sources, largely due to the expanded range and the open back for not just the fuller sound but a more natural experience too. I’ve always been satisfied with Sennheiser quality in the past, so waited for a good price ($163) and ordered them up. Arrived in timely way, packaged in a nice box. Complete with the two cable lengths mentioned. Those are also high quality. I’ve been wearing them for up to 3 hours continuously and haven’t noticed any discomfort on a bald head. These phones meet my expectations completely. I’m hearing notes that my other cheaper devices couldn’t deliver. Great experience so far! Just need to either find a protective pouch or mountable hanger for safekeeping.
Very happy with these headphones. I use them for everything from competitive gaming, movies to music. Couldnt be happie
Great headphones for use with my digital piano. Really good sound and extremely comfortable.
Purchased this for digital piano playing and it sounds amazing for my hybrid Yamaha AvantGrand N1X. Furthermore, it is also the most comfortable pair of headphones I’ve ever owned. The one negativity about this product is the difficulty of connecting the cable into the headphone output. I have to squeeze it in so hard that I fear I might damage the item. So, I just leave it on all the time.
Tested with ifi Zen Dac
These are just amazing, they are very light and with little clamping force, it is easy to forget you have them on and you can wear them forever with no discomfort, the pads a re the first I have ever owned that do not touch my ears at all. They even look gorgeous in ivory and brown. There is no wireless option here, nor any noise cancelling, you just get amazing sound from them.
At 50 Ohms, these are easy enough for a phone to drive but you may also want to consider a headphone amp to really give these phones the best signal to work with.
Sound wise, the sound is very relaxed, I was concerned that after previous Sennheisers, these would have a very boomy bass, they don’t, they have sufficient bass though they probably wouldn’t be suited to bass heads. mids and highs are relaxed which I like for the evening when I am just listening. I have headphones and earphones which have far livlier highs but these I find to be tiring. One thing to note is they are not forgiving at all of poorly recorded or mastered tracks. You can stream the high bit rates from spotify or tidal and they will sound great but if there is source is poor and has too much dynamic compression these will let you know about it so things like China in Your Hands will sound like garbage even from vinyl or SACD.
The sound stage is not the widest I have heard but things do exist outside your head whilst listening, I have sometimes found myself wondering and checking that my speakers were not also playing the music.
As these are open backed, you will hear the world around you and they will hear your music, so they are best listened to alone.
I listen to most types of music and have found that whilst most types do well on these, classical really shines out on them and you can picture the instruments around you. These are not heaphones for dancing with, or wearing for a workout. They are also not really suited for analytical work in the studio but they don’t try to be for any of those things, they are for relaxing in comfortable chair with a glass of good single malt whisky and for that purpose they are amazing.
Update, can I make these 6 stars? They have an undocumented feature, in that they are internally wired as balanced, and if you can find a compatible balanced cable teh sound goes to the next level, it is incredibly clear and the sound stage is wider. Search around for a cable (warning some that claim to be compatible may need slight modification to make the groove in the 2.5mm plug deeper) and you get great sounding balanced headphones for a ridiculously low price.
Very light and comfortable headphones. Sound is amazing, very airy, full and rich. As others have said, this is not a good headphone for loud environments nor for listening in a library where sound bleed may disturb those around you.
I bought these as a replacement for a set of Sennheiser HD 598SEs that have served me well since 2016. Unfortunately OEM parts are difficult to track down unless you want to go with third party stuff (I don’t because of preference). I listen to a lot of different things on my headphones: podcasts, classical, movies, rock, you name it, and the difference in the sound of these headphones is clearly different to my old set. It’s not much worse, but something in the construction has changed the quality. A comment in the Q&A section says that the sound is “tighter” which a good descriptor– the sounds in the upper mid range are the ones most affected by this, and not in a good way. It’s as if they’re bouncing off a wall, or something else is impeding it. Aside from that, the sound quality is what I’ve come to expect from Sennheiser.
That said, these headphones are very comfortable. I can wear them for six hours at a stretch with no discomfort. Not sure why Amazon has an option for noise cancellation in the stars as these absolutely are not isolating or cancelling.
I got these cause my old headset broke and I have been watching twitch streamers/youtuber that say great things about these. I love them except for that they are a little to tight at the front of my ears. I did just notice reviews with the same problem and I don’t know if I just need to stretch them but it’s very disappointing. I would still recommend these but I now am question if it’s just me being to sensitive.
The open back headphones are nice. Beautiful sound when playing music, not too bass heavy. If that’s what you’re looking for, look elsewhere. These seem fairly neutral. Great for gaming as well, paired up with a separate mic.
They take sound to a new level that I have never experienced before! 5 Stars is too low a score!
The sound quality is superb. Very happy with my purchase.
Awesome product. Great service and communication. Everything that I look for in an honest and reliable seller.
Nothing to complain about, well made and comfy
Sound grea
Impresionante. Sonido sobrecogedor.
Mes meilleurs Sennheiser depuis longtemps.
My brother wanted them for video games and he loves them. Very happy with the purchase!
Soll heien: es kommt raus, was rein kommt.
Kurzum: vollste Kaufempfehlung
First off, I wish to mentioned that collecting headphones was my hobby and this may give my review better validity. Unsurprisingly, this headphone will probably blow your mind if you are coming from earbuds or other cheap headphones but the HD599’s predecessor HD598 was actually one of my least liked headphones and I’m happy to say that this isn’t true with this current 500 line topping model. I have to make a disclaimer here that I no longer have any of my other headphones and I’m only going by memory here. Some of the headphones I had in my collection – Sennheiser HD595, HD598, HD600, HD650, Beyerdynamic DT150, AKG K702 and K240.
So what changes I have noticed. In comparison to the HD598, this headphone has an overall more refined sound and gone seems to be the veil, which made the HD598 sound a bit murky and as if the sound was coming from a cave and you were listening outside. It was just a boring headphone and the lack of transparency made me get rid of it twice. Now, this headphone doesn’t stray away from the HD598’s sound signature much – the presentation still is laid-back and unfatiguing, meaning that the treble isn’t piercing and you are not presented with a wall of sound but you are sitting a few rows back from the stage and are enveloped with music. I think what has helped to get rid of the veil is my observation that this headphone is just more detailed, especially in the treble and bass region. The bass in particular exhibits no signs of boominess and the subbass has been extended. Both the quality and quantity of the bass has been increased slightly but without it spilling into the midrange, making instruments and voices sound so sweet and lifelike. These aren’t bass monsters by any means I should say. They aim to reproduce music in a neutral way, with an emphasis on the midrange where most instruments and voices reside but you do get nice bass that makes you tap your feet. The treble is very nice on these. It is somewhat recessed, not making this an analytical or sparkly headphone like AKG K702 or other headphones designed for studio work, but these have plenty of detail in the upper region if you simply turn up the volume. This characteristic also makes the HD599 very unfatiguing to listen to for extended periods of time.
Compared to the HD600 or the HD650, these have an entirely different sound signature and I would consider them a lesser headphone but not by much. Perhaps not to the HD650 but to the HD600. However this may come down to your personal taste now that the clarity has improved on these and what difference remains is how music is presented to your ears. The HD600 have a smaller sound stage but they also have superior resolution and are more balanced across the frequency spectrum. I remember it as a very musical headphone that could present timbre of instruments so realistically that it gave me goosebumps.
AKG K702 is a better headphone specs wise. The bass goes lower but it’s still a very lean sounding headphone and there’s more energy in the treble region. The resolution is higher as well. However, that’s not to say that the HD599 will disappoint anyone looking for a transparent headphone. The K702 is just tuned differently and will therefore offer a different kind of sound, not necessarily a more likeable one. Ultimately it may be a case of which sound signature you prefer.
One thing to note is that this headphone doesn’t require a powerful amp to sound good but it has a potential to sound better if you use better equipment in your chain. It sounds good from my smartphone but the extra clarity and power provided by my Audioquest Dragonfly Red makes it go from good to magical. They are detailed enough that your average laptop or smartphone headphone output will just not take full advantage of their potential.
Comfort. These haven’t changed from the HD598 as far as I can see. They are light and there’s not any excessive clamping force. The pads go around your ears. I don’t like it when pads rest on my ears. They don’t make my ears warm and sweaty.
Design. I liked the HD598’s design better. These look cheaper. The main colour yellow isn’t beige or ivory like it used to be but 90’s computer plastic yellow.
Bonus points. It comes with a standard 3.5mm cable! The HD598’s included a barrel adapter that was so unwieldy. You get a 6.3mm cable as well and another adapter.
To sum up, this headphone scores well across the board and is kind of a jack of all trades. It offers a very pleasant audiophile-level sound but it may not be an exciting and analytical headphone like some higher end models. It’s also great for films and gaming due its large soundstage and dialogs will sound absolutely delightful on these. It doesn’t require that you spend a lot of money on other equipment to match its class, so stepping into the audiophile world without breaking the bank is possible. If you’re not a gear head like I was, you will probably never need to try another headphone. This one does everything just right.
Listening with headphones which go someway to what audiophiles take for granted is a real pleasure. Hearing nuances of sharpness cymbals and natural sound sibilances of peoples voices in song or verbal creates a real affinity between these headphones ear and brain. Thoroughly recommend these to anyone who wishes to step into the world of audiophiles on a budget. I listen a very broad genre of music. Thanks Amazon for a good deal too.
The best item i have ever purchased….. could not be happier with this product. The most comfortable headphones i have worn and they are perfect for every type of use. Perfect for gaming and perfect for entertainment like music and movies.
Sounds amazing only one downside from long use head hurts could be improved padding
Amazing product, all the quality you would expect from Sennheise
I’ve been using Sennheiser headphones for years and currently have three models in active use: HD558 (desktop use at home), PXC550 (mobile use when travelling) and the new HD599 (desktop use at work). I’ll compare below the HD599s to the other two. To put it brief, though, the HD599s sound amazing!
Sound quality:
HD599s sound the best by some margin. Compared to the older HD558s the sound is more open, more refined.. The difference is clearly noticeable but perhaps not “groundbraking”. Compared to the PXC550 the sound quality difference is bigger. The PXC550s sound a bit like they were equipped with “loudness filter” compared to the HD599 (even though I’ve disabled all corrections with PXC550s). In other words, too much bass and too bright trebles with the PXC550s. I clearly prefer the HD599s. The HD558s and HD599 were compared through a separate headphone amp.
Comfort:
All headphones are very comfortable. The HD599s still feel a bit firm (probably they’ll loosen up a bit in use), still very comfortable and can easily be used the whole day as I do at work.
Mobile use:
The HD599s not at their best here. Open design mean external sounds creep in quite easily. PXC550s of course the best with active noise cancelling, HD558s a bit better also with their closed design. Luckily, though, the sound from HD599s don’t leak out (at normal sound volumes) so one doesn’t have to fear disturbing the ones sitting next to you.
Conclusion:
Headphones still seem to be by far the best investment one can make in hifi. Absolutely great sound for less than 150eur! Feel a bit sad for the some thousands of euros I’ve spent for my loudspeakers…
599s have an impressive dynamic sound with plenty of detail throughout the low, mid-range and high frequencies. Very hood for the price.
Not much to say. These babies are everything you would expect from Sennheiser and more. Amazing sound, clean look, and surprisingly light on the head. Beautiful.
Best pair of cans I have owned to date . Balanced and precise sound .Very comfortable and a good price for a quality product . Perfect for long listening sessions at home . Pleased as punch with em . 🙂
hese headphones are extremely comfortable light and sound fantastic! for the price you can’t go wrong! open and not closed so you can hear things around you…if you prefer to use on plane bus or train etc…you will not be happy…however in the comfort of your own home…simply the best! awesome! love them!
Great sounding headphone I have always bought sennheiser for last 40 years never had a bad pair these guys make some of the best sounding microphones for the big tv stations and recording studio .
I absolutely LOVE these headphones. They are so comfortable I don’t want to take them off. They look great and sound great, I have them plugged into my TV. I’ve only had them for a few days, but I’ve worn them for several hours at a time already, I can’t have big loud surround sound system as I live in a small flat with close neighbours, so I go for the headphone option. I have been using a pair of Sennheiser momentum 2 closed back headphones (I love them too) also in ivory, but the sound difference with these is really quite noticeable. At a louder volume it’s not as loud as the closed back headphones, the sound seems to spread out more, I can hear more of the soundtracks background noises as well, a much fuller experience and a nice bass, not too much. But also I can now hear my phone rings or if someone knocks at the door if I’m watching a loud movie soundtrack.
Worth every penny! Highly recommend!
I got these a couple weeks ago, but not without some hassle. The original shipping address on the package was incorrect and I noticed this days before it was shipped. I requested for a cancellation through amazon with a message stating that this was a bad address and offered to reorder with a different shipping address. The response was simply that the company wouldn’t accept cancellations for any reason and didn’t give me any other way to contact them to discuss the matter further. I would understand if the package was being shipped that day, but it didn’t leave the building for multiple days afterwards, I’d give the service provided here an “At least you can paste an automated response”.
The product, once I finally got it, was everything I wanted from it. The only complaint I have for the headphones themselves is that the padding is so soft that if I were wearing glasses they would leave marks in the padding. They look really nice and I would hate to damage them in such a way. The performance while plugged into my DAC is phenomenal. I wasn’t entirely sure whether I would like the open back style headphones but picking them was the correct choice. Closed-back headphones are cool, but being able to listen and interact with people without having to take your headphones off or stop what you’re listening to is great.
========================
PC: ASRock B450 Pro4 mit AMD Ryzon 5 2600x, Realtek ALC892 Audio Codec.
Handy: Xiomi Pocophone F1, mit internem DAC. Software:USB Audio Player Pro (direkter HiRes Treiber, der angeschlossene USB DAC erkennt und betreibt.
Bedienung
=========
===============
Schwchen
=========
Genereller Eindruck
=================

Headphones, like most most things, have no literal price ceiling, but they do have a practical one, for regular mortals; it’s somewhere around the price of this headphone.
Sennheiser has been at this game for years, and they know what they’re doing. Nothing is accidental, nothing is left to chance, nothing is “not quite right”. From the connector, to the cable, the cup shape and size, padding, headband. Everything feels right. I appreciate the velour/cloth padding, after owning several leatherette headphones previously. It’s easy to keep clean, it’s comfortable, it breathes well, things don’t get sweaty. You can wear these for hours at a time.
Not being an audio engineer, I can’t speak authoritatively about the sound quality, but it sounds just fine for me. Listening to compressed sound sources is not a big deal these days, players are really good at processing audio resampled and compressed 3 different ways to sound acceptable on 1000W stereo systems. Uncompressed/mixed audio, such as from video games or Blu Rays, sounds very good and clean and there’s a good amount of bass.
These are open headphones, so don’t expect much insulation or dampening of outside noise. There’s not really any, and in fact, some frequencies will be amplified inside the cans beyond what you could hear with the headphones off. While that’s probably the only negative… back in the real world, closed headphones are heavier and have less ventilation. So, pick your devil.
Overall, if you can find these headphones on sale, definitely push that button. The 5-series from Sennheiser are legendary in any variety.
Long term edit: 1.5 years in, and nothing’s really changed. The headphones still look great, even after probably a couple thousand hours of use. The cable and armor aren’t wearing or stiffening, the headband fake leather is still looking like new. After some closer listening comparisons, I’d say the sound is tuned a bit towards the low end, so if you do lots of classical music you might have some complaints, but not a problem for me.
These are open back so they do not provide any noise cancelling. Sound quality and volume are grea
Love the sound signature. They are very easy to listen to and I can listen to these for hours. What makes these so amazing is that they work really great for music (audiophile quality) and also video gaming. The sound stage is huge. The only negative is the sound leakage but this is expected with open back headphones.
I am no audiophile but if you appreciate the nuances of good sound quality, these are worth every penny.
First off I am not an “audiophile”. I have a pretty decent home audio system (Denon hd-3500, DT 600 pro cinema speakers) around $1300 range. I was just looking for something I could plug into my receiver when my wife is sleeping or when I don’t want to piss off my neighbors.
I don’t know much about the higher end of headphones having never even put a set on. However I will say at this middle upper end of headphones I’m quite happy. I play Xbox, listen to music and watch a wide variety of shows and movies. All of these give me very good if not great quality.
These are, again middle upper level headphones. They can be plugged into your iPhone or other devices, but won’t really shine like they can when amplified or plugged a receiver.
Pros: excellent comfort, great sound overall, two cables 10′ and 3′ included.
Cons: needs something more than just a portable device (to hear full quality), don’t isolate audio (can bee heard around you), I feel like they let you down a bit in bass.
Neutral: 10′ cable wasn’t long enough for me and had to buy an extension.
Overall: I got for $154 on amazon and that’s a smoking deal if it fits what your looking for. These aren’t a “portable set” more of a good quality “at home set”
Also: So one thing more to mention. These phones grow on you. I can’t explain it but their sound really becomes better over time. I think their more neutral tones become more natural when compared to the more “bass booming” tones you would hear from other headphones.
Perfect for their purpose, incredible sound quality and open ear allows you to hear whats going on in the room while you record
I have a few different models of headphones and earbuds including the really well reviewed Sony WH-1000M2. Whilst these give a fantastic sound, there is just something about the Sennheiser HD 599 which brings music to life again. I have only had these a few days but have not wanted to put them down! The open and wide sound is brilliant and the detail is incredible. I am no audiophile but am hearing things in music I have never heard before. They are incredibly comfortable to wear and well made. As long as you don’t need to use them in a noisy environment, I would highly recommend.
for in house headphones the sound quality is fantastic. Paired with a Creative Sound Blaster Z its so good, perfect amount of bass and crystal clear sounds. I’ve tried a lot of gaming headsets over the last few months and these blow them away. I have some Astro a50’s that are now redundant because of these.
he build is nice as you would expect and the comfort is top notch. is very light with just the proper amount of clamping force. also, the color looks much better in person imo.
now the sound is just wonderful. this headphone is definitely a little colored. the sound is very aggressive and in your face. this thing boasts great detail across the board. the mid range is full and powerful. the treble is detailed and never sibilant, and it also has the most impactful bass out of all of the headphones i own… those headphones are the HD 6xx, game zero, cx sport, audioquest nighthawk and the monolith m560 and im not kidding when i say the HD 599 is my most enjoyable headphone when it comes to music and even gaming.
the 599 can be powered off of a phone but it definitely benefits a decently great deal from an amplifier. you dont need a super powerful amp either because the impedance of this headphone is only 50 ohms. for music, i use a fiio e10k/ bravo audio v2 (with a much better tube than the stock one) combo. and for gaming, i amp it with the astro mixamp. those options easily unlock the full potential of this headphone.
in all, i would actually recommend this headphone over the 6xx (i can hear the audiophiles dialing in their scopes lol) the 6xx is very good and very popular, but the build quality on the massdrop 6xx is nowhere near as good as the 599 straight from sennheiser, and the sound though more detailed and neutral on the 6xx is just less exciting in my opinion. the 599 demands your attention, while the 6xx is a bit softer.
I have them for a 2 months now and I’m finding them soo comfortable that you can literally forget that they’re sitting on your head. These were bought for PC gaming and music. Good to pair them with some DAC.
Great design. These headphones sound fantastic. Very comfortable. Everything you’d expect from Sennheiser – reviews online say the rest.
Got the HD599’s to replace my HD201’s, which have served me well for a number of years.
The sound is awesome! Never owned a pair of open back headphones before and it was definitely worth the switch. The sound stage is larger and the clarity is better (in my opinion). I’ve noticed subtle things in tracks that I’d never noticed before thanks to the great frequency response.
The cups are very large by comparison to the HD201’s, so they should be able to accommodate almost anyones ears. The cups themselves are also replaceable making these a good long term purchase. They also come with removable cables so you can switch between the smaller 3.5mm jack for your phone and PC, and the larger 6.35mm for your instruments/audio equipment. A 3.5mm to 6.35mm adaptor is also included.
Don’t really have anything bad to say about these.
This probably doesn’t need to be said but don’t use open back headphones at the office, during a commute or at a library as they do leak sound which is possibly the only caveat.
Sounds perfect for me – a warm sound, and not sharp (as I have sensitive ears) when put through my E10k DAC. Very comfy as well
The colour combination is classy with chocolate on cream. They are extremely light, and therefore not uncomfortable, but comfort could be increased with higher quality materials, both in the pads, and in the plastic exterior.
They sound amazing and give all the intricacies I never heard with my other (Bose) headphones. They are rich, warm, and seemingly accurate although I have yet to test for a true flat output. I am overall pleased with the product performance.
There are two cords with it, which lock into place rather than pull out easily. One is short with a standard 3.5mm for mobile use, and the other is much longer with a larger plug for studio use, and an adapter to 3.5mm.
definitely worth the money one of the better headphones out there at the moment, would recommend it to everyone that is willing to spend the money for i
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Ein neuer Kopfhrer musste her.
Man wei ja nie…
Das Equipment im Heimstudio:
– Mischpult: Roland VM-3100 Pro (empfohlene Lastimpedanz fr den Kopfhrerausgang seitens Hersteller: 8 – 50 Ohm)
– Synthesizer: Clavia Nord Modular G2X, Yamaha AN1x, Korg MS 2000R, Clavia Nord Drum 3P
– Software: Propellerheads Reason 10 unter Windows 7
– ipad Air2 (iPolysix, iElectribe, Animoog, Attack, Nave, Filtatron)
– Audio-Interface: RME Digiface USB
– Lautsprecher: Neumann KH 120A
– Mikrofon: Shure Beta 58a
Getestete offene Kopfhrer:
– AKG K702 (131 )
– AKG K712 Pro (213 )
– Audio Technika ATH-M50X (132 )
– Beyerdynamic DT 880 Edition 32 Ohm (165 )
– Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro (219 ) (halboffener Kopfhrer)
– Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (126 )
– Sennheiser HD 598 SR (129 )
– Sennheiser HD 599 (159 )
Getestete geschlossene Kopfhrer:
– Sennheiser HD 380 Pro (139 )
– Shure SRH840 (136 )
– Shure SRH940 (224 )
Man spricht dabei vom sogenannten Gewhnungseffekt.
You dont need to connect these to an amplifier, you can just connect to the headphone socket of your CD player. They work very well with Marantz CD Players, Pearl Lite and CD 6004 / 6005. Just connect and turn the volume up half way and I get a great deep hi fi sound. Obviously the CDs that you play have to be remastered well to get the optimum sound.
Very little difference between the HD 598 and HD 599 except that the HD 599 has slightly more bass but having said that Plenty of bass on the HD 598 as well. The sound however will always vary slightly depending on how well the CDS you listen to are made
ot super bass heavy but that is to be expected with these. sound great.
First of all, they’re beautifully designed and very comfortable. So far, so good. Then I played Steely Dan’s Aja album on vinyl plugged into a vintage Kenwood amp with a very good headphone preamp and wow. These headphones are amazing right out of the box, and they aren’t even broken in yet! I demoed 6 different headphones from 4 different manufacturers and these were my favorite. YMMV of course. Ordered them during the evening and received them the next morning. Delivery service is outstanding.
working as intended, worth the money if you can afford to spend i
It’s pretty good. I enjoy the sound. I don’t ask a lot of it. One of the cables it comes with feels kinda short, but that’s fine with where I’m putting it. Would recommend to others. 🙂
I had been looking at the Sennheiser HD5xx series for some time, particularly the HD598. I was impressed by the colour. Then I found these. My final decision on these was based purely on price as I found them (not on Amazon) for 179, including the short cable which I would have had to purchase separately with the other options. At 179, these were the most cost-effective option.
First impressions:
These headphones are BIG — earcups measure 110 x 85 x 20 — truly over ears; the most comfortable headphones I have ever tried.
Sound impressions:
I use these with my Fiio X1 DAP without a headphone amp. They also work directly out of my Samsung smart phone and KindleFire HDX without the need for a headphone amp, as well as from my computer.
I am not an audiophile so cannot really describe the sound in any meaningful way. My go-to headphones were the Symphonized Wraith 2.0 which are a closed-back design. Even I can hear a noticeable improvement over the sound quality of those. Being open-back, these HD599s are no good for listening while other people are around; but I knew that before I bought them so that is not a complaint from me.
Value for Money:
I have seen these described as “the top end of just below audio-quality headphones”. I am delighted with them but I don’t think they are worth three-times-the-price of the Symphonized Wraith 2.0. If the price included a Sennheiser-branded case, then maybe. Hence only 4 stars.
What I like:
* The ivory/brown colour is beautiful;
* These really are “over-ear” headphones; the cups are huge — and comfortable;
* The high-quality, substantial detachable cables — 1 x 3m x 6.35mm jack; and 1 x 1.2m x 3.5mm jack.;
What I like less:
* No case supplied.
Improvements
* I already had a spare case ready to replace the rather worn one on my Sennheiser HD201 which my grandson uses when he comes around. It is a snug and perfect fit for the HD599 so the HD201 will have to limp on a little longer in the battered case.
* I couldn’t resist the temptation to purchase the replacement 1.2m cable by KetDirect in a beautiful copper colour. This is a thicker and more substantial cable than the original black Sennheiser cable, but not an essential purchase.
I Previously had the 598c’s closed back, thought id give these open back a try, the soundstage is better but they are quite harsh and flat sounding, if you want a more detailed neutral sounding headphone they are fine, but they are not warm and not great for bassier electronic music , the 579’s are warmer , probably going to return them and go for something a bit warmer and relaxing.
Let me start out by saying that it’s been quite a while since I’ve used over-ear headphones. Usually I buy in-ear headphones to go with my mobile device, but my use for these is for use with my desktop computer to replace a set of Logitech gaming headphones.
Setup: Windows 10 Pro, ( Sound Blaster Z PCIe Gaming Sound Card with High Performance Headphone Amp and Beam Forming Microphone ) to which the headphones are plugged directly into (via back of computer), male, early 50’s, mostly rock music (Rush, Garbage, etc.)
When listening to these with no equalization, they sound pretty good, especially the bass. It’s right in the sweet spot where I would expect it to be. I find the treble okay, but I prefer a little more myself; but I attribute this to part of the aging process. Enabling a little equalization at the 8k and 16k levels wake up the treble (Geddy Lee!) to the point where I like it.
These are pretty light and fit well on my head. The pads don’t make my head feel hot and are more comfortable than I thought they would be with the cloth ear pads, as my previous experience has been either foam or a vinyl type of pad. I like the fact that the ear pads are replaceable, but haven’t had them long enough for that.
This is my first experience with open back headphones and one of my concerns was sound leakage. If I were in a room where I wanted to listen privately and wanted to avoid noise from others, that these would probably not work as intended; in which case I would use my in-ear headphones. In my case, the environment is within my home office and it is nice to be able to hear other things without removing them (doorbell, dog, wife, kids, etc.).
Overall, I’m very pleased with these and if some of the reviews I’ve seen elsewhere are true, they will improve with use.
This is my revised review. I originally gave 4 stars, but now after 6 months of use, I give it 5 stars. I love them more with time.
The sound is very good! Great bass, good enough treble. Of course it has Sennheiser’s colored signature. Even though the treble is clearer than on the HD598, it is still not as clear as the HD600 but these cost much more (not sure if they’re worth it, after comparing all the pros and cons.)
Versatile set – at 50 ohms – it can easily be used with satisfaction for movies or music listening – without needing an amp
Totally comfortable. The best! No complain whatsoever for the comfort.
Built of mostly plastic – so it is light. The look/color = really nice, Soundstage is good, but not excellent.
I appreciate the fact it comes with 2 detachable wires (one short and one long).
All in all, I’m very satisfied. After comparing with many other brands/models, I can say this is on the top of my list.
I would probably buy it again, if need be.
The HD599’s really are good! In relation to the rest of the HD5 range, the 599’s are basically a slightly updated version of the HD598’s. The specifications are pretty much identical apart from SPL which is reduced from 112dB to 106dB but that’s pretty much a non-issue. The big difference between these and the 598’s that I noticed straight away is the build quality. These are just a little bit weightier (in a good way) and feel much stronger and a lot less flimsy which was one of my major gripes about the 598’s and why I eventually returned them. The headband looks a lot more stylish with it’s brown faux-leather finish and overall the aesthetics are much more desirable than the already good looking 598’s, however the padding on the headband is reduced, somewhat in favour of the visuals, meaning they could possibly become uncomfortable quicker than their predecessor. The ear-cups are the same material as most of the HD5 range; very soft but firm enough to hold their shape, and I must say (having somewhat larger ears), they feel a lot more roomy than the 598’s shallow design. The sound quality is great! Though they do sound very similar to the 598’s (because they are essentially the same headphones but with a bit of a face lift), I find the sound a lot clearer, a little sharper and just all round less muddy! These headphones are open-backed, but the mesh is a lot thicker than on the 598’s and when I shone a torch (flashlight) through them their was definitely less light coming through. This passes onto the sound leak. Whilst there is still sound leakage (they are open-back after all), they leak a lot less than the 598’s, even to the extent where you could probably get away with using them in a public space without people getting annoyed! However, because of the reduction in sound leaking, there is also less outside noise and the sound itself is a lot warmer and a little more intimate than the 598’s so I would probably class these as semi-open backed. If you are worried about the sound-stage… worry not! I’d say that, despite the more intimate sound, the sound-stage still feels as wide and as spacious as the 598’s. Overall, a great update to Sennheiser’s flagship HD5 series, with smart audio updates and striking asthetics! If you can stretch your budget, I would definitely recommend this great pair of headphones!
Great sound. Comfortable and are around the ear. Unlike my favourite Sennheiser Momentums which were advertised as around ear but were not. It is the first time I have tried open backed Sennheisers and I like them. The sound isn’t as rich as my Momentums but the soundstage is definitely wider and they are more comfortable (mainly due to not being ‘on’ ear). Two wires, one with the 1/4ins Hi Fi plug, the other the 3.5mm jack plug for mp3 players. Tested on HiFi and IPOD nano (7th generation). Love them with the nano. Liked with the HiFi but prefer the Momentums. They are open backed so there is sound seepage, but the openness leads to the wider sound. I like not being completely blocked in with the sound. I like being able to hear a little bit of what is going on around me. Great headphones (I like the colour!) and will become my headphone of choice for use with my IPOD in a room on my own.

Having previously purchased a set of the predecessor headphones (HD598) i was please to test and review this updated model.
I originally purchased the 598s to utilise with the TV – I suffer from mild hearing loss in both ears and found that the TV/HIFI volume too great for my partner to endure.
This updated set follows the same basic design as previous with few aesthetic changes – the ear surrounds are a lighter shade of ivory, the Sennheiser branding has been relocated to the headband and the trademark moved onto a stainless steel plate on each ear cup.
Moving on to the sound output, there is little change noticed – the 598s were never bass heavy and the new variant provides a rich, velvet like tonal quality throughout the range.
I find the rich sound ideal for speech based TV, but these 599s are equally at home with our classical, easy listening, jazz CD library and indeed whilst monitoring our Kawai Digital Piano.
A beautifully crafted set, producing mellow, clear sounds – if you’re after lots of heavy bass look elsewhere but these are very fine, stylish headphones from a top quality brand.
Sennheiser make superb headphones that please both casual listeners and audiophiles alike and, with the release of the 2016 updates to the 5 series like these top of the line 599s, I expect that their lofty reputation will be upheld. These HD599s are the top of the 5-series line and an updated version of the 598/598SE. The 5 series headphones sit just below the fabled quality but priciness of the HD600 series (and up) so offer what is billed as “almost audiophile quality” at a rather more affordable price than their big cousins.
The HD599s arrive in an attractive package containing the headphones, a 3m cable, a 1.2m cable and a converter jack for use with the long cable (the shorter cable is already terminated in a standard 3.5mm jack). The first thing that hits you about the headphones themselves when you remove them from the box is the unique look, which may not be to everyone’s taste. Personally I don’t understand people not liking a pair of quality headphones like these because of the way they look, but I concede that for out and about use the cream and brown colour may not be the “coolest”. The 599s visually differ from their 598 predecessors thanks to more extensive use of chrome and silver on the newer model – with the large Sennheiser logo and brand name on the grille and headband portions of the ‘phones breaking up all of that brown and cream nicely.
Construction-wise the headphones retain the really excellent comfort of the 598s; the headphones don’t form a clamp on your head like some other models but remain comfortably, almost imperceptibly in place even during long listening sessions. The 599s also don’t pin your ears down thankfully; the earpads are soft felt-like material and the headband itself is nicely cushioned. Build quality is also excellent with the headphones being nicely weighted but not to the extent whereby you actually feel them on your head. The plastic of the mainframe doesn’t feel flimsy at all, and all joints and connections appear sound and like they’d take both normal and vigorous usage without worrying about them falling apart. The removable cables are not of the braided variety and both attach securely with a twist, into the headphones.
Surely though the most important consideration when buying earphones is the sound….
Firstly, I feel it is important to say that if you own the HD598/598SE headphones then the 599 sounds much the same to my untrained ears. At first it sounded as if the lows had been given a lift but, after a burn in period, I cannot perceive any difference between my beloved 598SE headphones and the 599s. So, if you’re thinking about upgrading from the previous model purely for a sound upgrade my advice would be think carefully, and poll for as much opinion on the matter as you can first. Not that sounding like the 598 series is a bad thing though; far from it. These HD599s sound genuinely excellent in almost every way. The lows (bassy sounds) are accurate and controlled without being overpowering although, being open backed, you wouldn’t say that lows were the strongest point of the 599s. If I had to use one word to describe the lows I would use “precise”. Mids (that’s the mid frequency range, main vocals, instruments etc) is where I would say these headphones really shine. Vocals are full and clear with no hint of rasp and a really good, clear representation of vocal timbre. Instrumental clarity is good, both with acoustically driven music, and more rocky material, and the whole sound is expansive and accurate. I’ve heard more “exciting” headphones at this price range, but not many that are more accurate in the mid range and that’s how I like my music to sound; as the creators intended it to. Lastly in terms of the frequency response the highs (cymbal sounds for example) are good too; never overpowering the sound or sounding muddy or compressed. Again, the word I’d use is accurate. The soundstage of the HD599s; that is how “wide” the music sounds, is a strong point too, with instrument separation being clear and the stereo effect being clearly defined and not too in your head.
In short – the HD599 headphones sound genuinely superb, like you imagine “proper”, quality headphones should.
One thing to beware of with these headphones is the fact that they’re open backed and therefore leak a lot of sound. Put simply, at mid to high volumes people in or on the same room/bus/train/plane as you will hear (and therefore possibly be annoyed by) what you’re listening to. The pay off for this is the previously described wide soundstage and clarity but it is definitely something to be aware of and, if sound leakage is an issue for you, you should hunt out some closed back headphones like the also newly-released Sennheiser HD569s for example.
All in all then these are precise, detailed headphones which give a good, clean, very well balanced sound that is involving without necessarily being too falsely exciting or unnatural. The HD599s sound like quality, and with the physical upgrade over the previous model, look a cut above the rest too. To my untrained ears I can’t hear a huge difference from the HD598 range that they replace – but for anyone looking for a truly great pair of headphones that sound and look like quality I genuinely do not hesitate in recommending the Sennheiser HD599s to you – unreservedly.
These are an update to the hugely popular 598.
What you get is a set of headphones that are supremely comfortable both on the ears and head and so lightweight you can almost forget you are wearing them.
The solid construction, well padded headband and soft ear cups enable extended listening sessions in comfort.
Like the 598 before them they offer sublime crispness to the highs without harshness and an excellent wide soundstage. The overall sound is balanced with a solid bass, clear middle and crisp highs without any harshness.
What they are not are bass monsters. If want booming crushing bass look elsewhere, these are for a balanced detailed sound for those who listen music not just as background noise.
Nice that 2 length leads are included. Replaceable ear cup foam and solid construction mean they should last years.
Shame their not black though.
