Purchased at 99, at this price-point they offer an outstanding value. Good sound quality, microphone is way better than average (people can hear you quite well, filters background noise). The bluetooth feature that allows you to pair it to another device is great and works effortlessly. You can pair it to your phone and listening to other stuff (music, videos, calls) while playing. Perfect if you play with friends across other platforms (as you can use the bluetooth feature to chat on discord, other party chats, etc).
I picked this one over the 7p+ as it is compatible with PS5, Xbox, and PC. There is a switch on the wireless adaptor to switch from PS5/PC to Xbox (I believe Xbox uses a proprietary system). Having owned the 7p before, the 7X+ is just as comfortable and now charges via USB-C. Battery life is decent lasting several hours before requiring another charge.
Overall, a great option over the official Headsets, especially if you own multiple consoles.
Quite lightweight, good sound and provides good directional feedback in ear. Can get quite warm as closed back and are not open headphones. Good customisation available for audio mixing. Mic also good
Battery lasts quite a bit, the mic is good and it sounds good, overall quality is good, not the comfiest but still comfortable, quite expensive though as competitors such as turtle beach provide good quality for lower prices
so after a few months of using I’ve noticed that the battery is not as good as it used to be maybe getting 10-12 hours use on full charge on low volumes for 200 id expect a bit longer personally also i don’t know why on such an expensive headset they wouldn’t have usb type c it does annoy me a little, although the comfort of these headphones are phenomenal along with the quality of sound although sometimes for in game chat my audio is noticeably poorer than when i use discord all in all a great headset and would recommend if on sale.
I got these for 97 (Used – Like New) so I saved some money as they go for 129.99 brand new.
As stated they feel brand new. They work perfectly and the sound quality is great, the mic quality is also very good for the price. They are very comfy.
The Steelseries GG software is also impressive.
I would definitely recommend these, even at full price.
Been using these for 5 months, sounded great when fresh out of the box, felt really comfy
After 5 months, still feels really really comfy (that’s why i chose steelseries) but sound is slightly less quality (still average/above average sound quality though)
The build is pretty stable
in my opinion these are great headphones but im in no way a person who knows much about audio but i think theyre really comfy sound great and have a great battery life. only gets 4 stars due to the scare i had of them breaking but i think it was just user fault but i dont know. i had to hard reset them and they “work” again but they might not have even been broken to start with. personally i love them, just maybe watch them for the first month for refund if needed, i have 5 days left before i cant and im gonna be watching them and see how they do.
For years I used turtle beach headsets, but after treating myself to a Xbox Series X I decided it needed a premium headset to go with it. After going back and forth undecided, I finally took the plunge on these bad boys. Got at a fantastic price too, due to black Friday sales. Very comfortable, can play for hours and not get achey ears or feel hot. With the soft cushions and head strap you sometimes forget they are even there. Quality of sound is fantastic, you can have 4 presets so depending on what game or movie you play then select the preset that works for you (footsteps in CoD). Also expect the wife to get annoyed because you cannot hear her . No issues with the mic, can switch on or off and tuck away if not needed, you can also mute players if you don’t want to hear them. Just make sure you update the software regularly on your computer, you can also customise the presets too.
A very happy customer/game
Headset is good and comfortable, good sound and all, no issues with it when its working.
The only thing i hate about it, is that when my battery runs out, almost 90% of the time it wont work after, even when connecting it to charging cable, it simply wont start charging, or it will and when i try to turn it on after charging for some time, it will go in random broken mode where the power led isnt on, but the mic mute led will be on and it gets stuck in this. After that i need to spend like 30 minutes fixing it by pressing the factory reset button, but since it wont always work, i need to repeat the process like 10 times until it does. The only thing the customer support were able to help with was “do factory reset” and I’ve opened 2 tickets about the same issue already and after that i just found it pointless. It is really furstrating having to always keep battery in check out of fear that the headset one day wont just turn on and having to remember every time i leave it to turn it off is a drag. Its wireless for a reason and battery running out should break the whole headset. I am wondering if to give 3 or 4 stars just because of this issue i keep encountering.
This issue aside, headset is 5/5 for me (when you get it on sale for at least 120 and under, as earcups are shallow and will need some extra money to buy a replacement, but i already had one so it was no biggie for me), and since this the only minus i have with them is the battery issue, which honestly sometimes just makes me want to throw the headset out of the window and buy something else instead, so I am giving it a 4/5.
Got this on a like new from Amazon warehouse.
Got a bit of a tangle on the pricing but that is not the point in this review.
Moving onto the review.
Box is easy to get into. In there I found only a headset and a micro usb cable.
My use case is use Xbox wireless dongle to connect to PC for gaming and Bluetooth for work calls.
Xbox wireless dongle connection is simple. Start pairing on dongle and hold power button on headset for 6 seconds. Paired immediately. Zero drop or lag on a 2 hours session on Destiny 2.
Bluetooth connection is similar, but turn on headset first then hold Bluetooth button for 6 seconds. Showed up immediately on my Google pixel. Minimal drops (counted 3 times over 8 hours).
Sound quality wise, there is quite a bit of bass. Good for shooting games I guess. Also pretty good for the RPG music scores.
No report from my work colleagues on not hearing me clearly so I presume mic is working fine.
This ticked all the boxes for me.
I can foresee the hinges on the rotator is likely to break in the future. Time will tell how it long lasts.
For now I ll enjoy the headset.
Good audio quality but OK mic quality and very comfortable but if you have a big head it will move abou
Great headset only problem is I had to mess about downloading software on laptop to use the chat/game mix volume
Great headset amazing sound quality you can even adjust your sound setting which I like very, mostly comfortable and the adjustable strap is wonderful as I have a small head so most headsets are too big but this one fits just fine my microphone quality seems great too I get no complaints from my friends about my mic buzzing or an echo also the battery lasts me a while so its okay to forget to charge it after a gaming session or so
I use these for multiple uses including gaming on my PS5 & PC as well as meetings on windows PC and MacBook.
In game the audio quality creates an effective surround sound effect so excellent for immersion. If you’re like me then you tend to get lost gaming for hours at a time and I haven’t had any problems with comfort over these long sessions. Although sometimes my ears do get quite hot but I think that’s to be expected from any headset. I sometimes wear glasses as well and they’re still a comfortable fit with or without the glasses on.
In voice chat/meetings I can hear the voices on the other end really clearly and I’m told my voice is coming through crisper than ever so can definitely recommend on that regard. I’m also able to walk to my kitchen a few rooms away and don’t suffer any drop in the audio quality when I do.
My only grip is the size of the dongle you have to plug in, particularly on the ps5 it can’t just plug in the usb-c dongle without blocking the other front usb-a port so instead I use the provided usb-c to usb-a adapter cable but then there’s a cable dangling about and it’s not aesthetically pleasing. It’s barely an issue but I figure worth a mention, particularly if you’re like me and use it across multiple devices. If you’re just using it on 1 device it would be much easier to hide.
Otherwise I’d say it’s the perfect headset 100% would recommend
Bought these to replace my dying Corsair hs70s. Out of the box the sound was not as good as the Corsair’s but was still decent, with some fiddling with the steel series software I was able to get the sound pretty good. I find that these are loose fitting across the top of my head so if I put my head down for any reason they fall off.
Battery life is incredible, I use these for work and gaming I can use these for 2 days work and gaming (roughly 12 -14 hours per day) before they need a charge.
Microphone is very sensitive but very responsive, there is some voice feedback through the drivers if you are too loud into the microphone, a good way to tell if the mic is too close to your mouth.
I would recommend these for almost any use on a pc, can’t comment for consoles as I don’t use one.
Brilliant headphones. My son loves them. They are very comfortable and are wire free. He can walk around the house and out into the garden doing his chores whilst listening to his favourite music.
Pros:
– Microphone. Nice and clear, dedicated mute button, and easy to deploy/retract. Never had an issue of friends being unable to hear me in Discord.
– Sound. It’s a gaming headset, and it makes games sound good. It’s not the highest audio tier because that’s not what you’re paying for.
– Audio mixing. The ability to mix between “chat” and “game” is a amazing feature and I wish more headsets had this! I can very easily balance the audio from discord and the game I’m playing on the fly, which has become such an integral part of how I play games now I’m not going to go back to a single audio channel solution anytime soon. I thought it would be a bit of a gimmick but turns out the be the best feature.
Battery. Lasts in my experience 20 hours without a charge, which for someone like myself that is online for maybe 4 hours an evening is perfect as I can charge it pretty much once a week. Not had it die on me yet!
Cons:
– Not for big heads. My head is apparently a little larger than most, and therefore I have the adjustment strap adjusted all the way to the end, in fact I’ve only got half of the velcro attached! I haven’t noticed this to be uncomfortable, however if I knew this in advance I wouldn’t have purchased this.
Verdict – It’s a great headset and the audio mixing isn’t just a gimmick but a major plus point, however sadly I can only recommend this to people with smaller or “normal” sized heads 🙁
So, I’m using this for a mix of gaming and general use.
As far as the sound quality and mic quality goes, no contest, SteelSeries delivers extremely well again.
My main gripe with this headset is how unnecessarily awkward it can be. There are multiple audio channels and multiple communication channels, which you need to set and ensure are defaulted with your system before they will register correctly with you selected app or game.
An example of where you can run into issues is attempting to have a communication channel selected for discord, while also having that communication channel selected for your game. Sometimes the communication channel will work for the game based off of your dongle connection, but it won’t registere in discord without turning the bluetooth on, for seemingly no reason.
I’ve also had issues with registering the correct audio channel for say, watching some stuff in the background while playing some more casual stuff. I’ll have a game launch and then all of a sudden I lose audio to anyhting outside of the game.
All of this is before you even enable Sonar, which is their optional audio enhancement software, that adds even more channel options for further confusion.
This is a fantastic headset, when it just works. Well worth the money but just about worth the occasional hassle.
I wanted a gaming headset that I could wear on a plane or train and not look like I’m on the way to gaming convention. I really look the subtle look and functionality of these. The look and feel like a premium product and they seem like they’ll last a while. Sadly, they are let down by scratchy and itchy ear pads.
The headphones connect well to everything PS5, MacBook phone etc. The sound quality is really good. I wish there was a phone app to tweak the sound settings like turtle beach have. You have to connect to a computer to alter the settings.
As already mentioned, the big downside is the comfort of the ear pads. The material is scratchy and itchy, on the skin on the side of your face. I noticed that after a wearing them for a little while 15-20 mins they started to feel uncomfortable. I don’t suffer with any allergies or skin sensitivity whatsoever. The ear pads are actually slight too small for me. I don’t have big ears but after a few hours these begin to become painful/achy. I reached out to steelseries via twitter and had no reply at all.
I’m probably going to end up having to spend 20 on a better set of ear pads, which isn’t great when I’ve only just bought them. They are not the most expensive headset around but they aren’t exactly cheap either. I’ll probably opt for cooling gel ear pads if I’m forced to upgrade.
I’m confident these will be more comfortable once I have some third party ear pads but I wish I’d known beforehand and could have factored the extra cost into my decision to buy. If you’re going to buy these, see if you try them on somewhere first.
It’s a good product but not worth the whole price great buy on a sale
decent sound but if you have a large head keep clea
My overall review of this set is positive and I’ve given a detailed description of how the special chat mix feature works however I did have an issue using them with a USB hub which I have described but I won’t score them on this as it is quite an uncommon thing to have. The tl;dr is that chat mix doesn’t work with a USB hub.
Overall good headset, well thought through, comfortable and visually appealing. The mic is nicely loud even when its stored in the retracted position, extended its actually slightly loud which is unusual for a headset. The signal tones indicate audibly that the device has turned on or off and even indicates things like the device being on but not yet connected to the machine so its easy enough to understand why they aren’t playing if that does happen. The chat mix, when working properly is very well done.
When I read about these headphones before buying them I found very little info about the chat mix feature so I will explain it in detail here as it really is the reason to buy this headset over similarly priced sets. The headphones function as 3 separate audio devices at the same time (rather than just output and input which would be 2). In the windows sound menus you get 2 output devices, a device for chat and a device for game. The advantage of this is that the headset has a volume dial on the back left ear piece which rolls from (chat) –> (both together) –> (game) and the centre point with both together has a nice click to it to make it easy to get the headset back to that default both position. The normal volume dial is on the right ear piece which works exactly like it does on other headsets with a high to low volume range which affects both outputs the same way.
Unfortunately I’ve had a problem with the chat mix and because it is such an unusual feature it was very difficult to determine this was the problem, hopefully if you have it this will prepare you. The issue I had was that when plugged into a USB hub (which I use to conveniently move all my peripherals between my work laptop and desktop together) the dual audio completely breaks, you can use one or the other but as soon as the system tries to use both at the same time neither of them will work at all and it seems like something has broken until you convince the computer to stop using one and magically it is fixed.
Only a 4 for sound quality as the Bass could be better. Also a quick note on software, I find trying to use the recommended steel series software always give me issues but if I ignore the software and just use them as wireless headphones they’re great.
They do work wired and wireless with a USB-C dongle.
The sound quality is great, the option to adjust the volume chat/game is great.
Software is a bit rubbish but the beta equaliser is great thing. I’ve played COD, Borderlands 3 and Tomb Raider and other games and the spatial sound was grea
Love it I’ve been eyeing steelseries headsets for years and when I saw this for 30%off I just had to. Also the sonar feature on the app is real nice, been using it for pretty much every game I play and for music.
Nice headset, seems really accurate and clear audio when playing Cod just know where people are located, super clear and easy controls, retractable mic a nice little bonus, do yourself a favor and buy it in black…. Saved me 79.99 at time of purchase
Gut verstndliche Software, gute Qualitt und guter Sound. Bin sehr zufrieden.
This headset is a nice weight and quite comfortable for extended use, both the stereo sound and the simulated 7.1 surround seem to work well, the only slight issue seems to be with the Sonar setup in the Steelseries GG app losing the output selections to the headphones, particularly after a software update, meaning you have to reset them from time to time. Noise cancellation is acceptable rather than stellar.
Plastic feels a little cheap and software is still in beta, but they’re super comfy and have great sound in my opinion. I like that I can use them with nearly all my devices and the surround sound works really well with my PS5 and with Halo Infinite on PC.
The left hand can on my old Arctis 7s began to play up after 4 years, and I saw these on sale so grabbed them without really reading the details.
They’re a but more comfortable than my old set, sound seems little different (very good though).
The best thing about my old 7s was the dongle- you plugged the 3.5mm jack for your desktop speakers into to, and it would automatically switch between speakers and ‘phones when you turned them on. This sounds petty but I found it a massive quality of life feature that set them apart from the competion- no more need to mess around selecting outputs from the task bar etc. I was dismayed to find the feature has been dropped for the 7+ model. Crazy, loses a star for this.
Hatte noch nie so ein teures Headset. Habe nun mein Steelseries Set Up komplett.
Okay I will keep this very short and to the point.
Brought these as a replacement for some ps4 specific turtle beach that was very good except for the charging port messing up on multiple head sets.
Did a lot of reading and if the majority where to be believed I’d have a choice of the Arctis 7+, Astro a50 or Logitect Pro X.
I decided to take a chance on these as they where the newest and also had usb c and fast charging with double the batteries life than the astro and a lot more than logitech.
The sound quality on these sounds very nice with the ps5 3D audio, it’s clean and you can definitely hear all the sounds ranges and foot steps etc in games.
The one problem for me and for me its a big issue is the bass.
The bass is low and even when attached to a pc and changing the settings to bass boost its still on the low side and I really like to hear guns THUMP when they are fired on games.
Also there is a little stuttering from time to time from the dongle connection! Nothing serious but a minor annoyance that may not prove problematic for most.
I’m not sure I will keep these yet as headphones need to be left on when first brought for like 10/15 hours to get the true sound of the headphones (a bedding in period)
For the price of 120 I think it was a good deal but if your a bass head then you won’t be that impressed.
I will update the review if there is any significant change over the next few days.
They do look really nice too
After having lots of other brands of headsets theres really nothing that comes close to steel series they excel in comfort and sound and are by far the best I’ve had so far I’m using these on the ps5
Sehr schnelle Verbindung. Gute Qualitt. Liegt gut auf dem Kopf. Bequem. Ohne denn Empfnger keine Kommunikation. Preis ziemlich teuer.
amazing headset good audio . wireless connection is above expectation the range is very good
definatly worth the money
Trs bon casque !
A bit difficult to set up at first, but it works very, very well. The game-chat balance is very important. Since I’ve tried them, I wouldn’t change it for any other. And I’ve had two of the best from Razer (my favourite brand) and in a short time they broke down.
In Summe sehr empfehlenswertes Headset!
I have the Arctis 7+ and they are really good headphones grate sound quality and once you get used to the sound settings and how to set them up in the SteelSeries app, Was a bit difficult at first to get my head around it took about a day but very easy to use, the sound is really clear, playing music and playing game’s
Here is a list of headsets I have gone through before finding these and loving them.
Logitech G Pro X Wireless
Hyper X Cloud 2
Steel Series Arctris Pro and dac (wired)
After using all these headsets I always found something that I didn’t like from the sound to the comfort.
This headset for me has everything, the sound quality in game is very nice and seems very balanced.
This headset also comes with a USB C charging port and beta access to Sonar which is the new EQ software which is very good in my opinion although it can bug out sometimes.
If you are looking for a headset I would suggest trying out this one.
Positives
– Sound quality is very good
– Very comfy compared to others I’ve tried
– Sonar software is very good (comes with the headset and works with the Arctis Engine)
– Better wireless length then others (I can go in the kitchen and still hear)
– I don’t charge this headset as much as I did the g pro x wireless which is nice
– USB C Charging port
Cons
– The Mic doesn’t sound the best but it’s passable (I don’t use the mic anyway)
– Sonar software at first was buggy but it seems to have settled down for me
Gaming macht damit Spa daher beides 5Sterne
alles in allem 4,75 Sterne 🙂
Pro
+Edel und schlicht
+Tragekomfort erstklassig
+Perfekt abgestimmte Funktionen und Tasten
+Funktioniert whrend dem Laden
+Sehr leicht und auch fr Brillentrger
geeignet
+Mikrofon sehr unauffllig wenn eingezogen
+Sound individuell anpassbar mit guter Overall-
Quality (nur ber die Steelseries Engine)
+Plug and Play
+30 Stunden Akku
+Mikrofon-Rckhr Ton damit man Post, Kinder,
etc hren kann
+Sidetone hat eine kleine Kerbe auf 50-50
Kontra
-Mikrofon-Qualitt lsst fr diesen Preis sehr zu
wnschen brig
Lg
Using this on an Xbox console for about 2+ months and honestly, I’ve had better for a third of the price.
Sound quality is overall good, no issue with game or party sound, pretty easy to control which and what you’d like more using the scroll wheels.
The issue arises with the connectivity, and oh dear is it bad many times mid game the headset turns off the audio from both party and game? Not sure as to why since the headset is still on and should be working, leading me to believing it has a difficult time at certain moments keeping its connection with the Xbox. Once you turn the headset off and on again it works again since it reconnects with the Xbox, a very frustrating thing since yeah whilst it is a Bluetooth device, it seems to have greater connection with my phone Bluetooth (iphone) compared to the Xbox (haven’t had the headset disconnect from my phone randomly like it does with the Xbox yet). This actually links to a positive of the headset which is that it can connect to both the Xbox and your phone at the same time, allowing you to watch a video on your phone whilst playing both your game and speaking to your friends on party chat. Other than that I think that I’ve honestly had a better experience with a wired connection purely due to connection sake. The ear cups are comfortably same goes with the stretchy belt, was skeptical at first but it was definitely an improvement from my older headset which put a lot of pressure on my head over long gaming sessions.
Also the Battery is very strange it would seem that the battery depletes at a really fast pace from full charge but then it has really efficient battery towards the orange marker (30% left) strange as I find the last 30% to last the same if not slightly longer than the starting 70% of battery.
Overall I would really consider if the price is good for you honestly it was a little disappointing for me since at the price since I thought I was getting very good quality headphones at a pretty high price when comparing to other headphones however like I mentioned above it has its nuisances.
If you don’t mind the connectivity issues I recommend, however I am also unsure about other brands since this is the first Bluetooth headset I’ve owned so maybe this is a general thing about Bluetooth headsets especially for gaming.
Will update as I go along and will show images in the future:
So, I’ll start with the connectivity. The Bluetooth connection works completed fine before and after you update the software on your headphones. But here’s a catch, if your headset isn’t showing up on any of your Bluetooth devices, just hold down the Bluetooth connection more than 6s (10s I would say) untill the blue light starts blinking faster and check again as this unpairs your headset.
Yea it doesn’t tell you this on any instructions and had to physically find it out myself.
Charging: currently I don’t know myself as it arrived with 70+ battery life and only used 30% in a week so I’m currently testing it right now.
I can see how these headset earpieces can break but they’re quite reasonably strong ( I haven’t tried bending them bc high value item but in my eyes they do look a little more sturdy then what people are talking about)
Dongle: I love the dongle idea because they say Bluetooth has some lag and not the best for gaming. So they designed the dongle for pc and PS just need to flick the switch (after it’s plugged in (u may want to download the software on pc for pc) and press connect after you chose either pc or ps)
Dual connectivity: I love the idea of these, I could be playing I don’t know, warzone for example and my phone recieves a phone call, you wouldn’t be looking at your phone or even hear it if you are playing. However this headset once connected to your phone and pc/PS4 it’ll let you know when someone is calling you or receiving a notification that’s important.
The microphone: ok Im not a massive fan with sidetone as I personally hate my own voice but I can see why it’s a feature, some people would check if their voice is being heard before streaming or gaming and you can always turn it off in the software too. The microphone is really clear and picks up the slightest sound you make (as I tested it with side tone)
Overall I love these headset because when I’m outside, I can hide the mic because having a massive microphone can be a bit weird when your walking around with them and they’re nice and easily tucked away. Would I pay this price? Hmm well with some of the Bluetooth problem I would say probably not but I’m happy that I did because it has everything I love about this product and hopefully it’ll last years
Pros:
* Great for playstation 5, had no issues so far
* really really comfortable in every way possible
* connectivity (Bluetooth and dongle)
* battery life.
* easy adjustment
* good mic
* good dual connectivity
* connectivity with dongle is good
* reasonably sturdy but can see how you can get cracks within them
Cons:
* can get an annoying constant beeping noise (headset low on charge or to far away from your dongle if connected)
* clearer instructions for example the Bluetooth unpair and repair problem that I faced.
* not a type c charger as I was kinda expecting it to have due to the “high end product”
* not much bass but can be toggled
This is perhaps one of the most versatile headsets I have ever owned. Not only does it use lossless wireless, it also supports a bluetooth connection so you can connect directly to your phone or laptop without needing the transmitter base.
It is very comfortable thanks to the strap that at first I almost did not want to buy it due to the strap. However, strap was easy to adjust (far easier than I expected) and it only took me two attempts to get it just right. The strap also makes the headset feel a lot lighter on the head as you do not have anything hard pressing resting on the top of your head. The earpads bend all sorts of ways so you can get that perfect angle you want to have it on your ears to suit the shape of anyone’s head.
Comfort aside, the hot swap batteries work so well, shockingly I do get the advertised +-10 to 9 hours of usage per charge per battery. The batteries charge very fast in the transmitter base and tend to be fully charged long before your current charge is empty on the battery you are using (fun fact: the design of the batteries is pretty much identical to that of the much loved G7 Logitech gaming mouse, so if you have used that then this will feel all too familiar!)
In terms of sound quality this is far better than any headset I have ever owned and I think you actually will not be able to find a headset that can beat the sound quality on this device!
The reason I say that is that the drivers in this headset are clearly designed to perform well regardless what you toss at them – music, movies or games it just can take it and then some!
Using the official SteelSeries software you can get the most out of it though and can setup mutiple set sound profiles so if you prefer it one way for one game or for music and then another way for a different game or for movies for example you can just rightclick on the SteelSeries app and select the profile you have setup in advance.
The sound really changes drastically depending on the settings you put in the app but regardless of settings you can really hear how well these drivers perform. The output is just such a high fidelity regardless of what you are listening to that nothing can outperform this headset.
There is also a clear distinction when you enable and disable the surround sound not just in games but also even in music. If you are listening to any music that has an orchestral background for example the surround really helps you hear the depth of the orchestra versus the surround off it will sound a lot more bland.
This is also why this headset shines in that any audiophile headset a- will not have a built in microphone (which all my friends on Discord say sounds extremely clear) and b- will not perform equally good on all sound usage. Audiophile headsets tend to perform best at music but then if you give them a game or a movie their performance just is not as good as a gaming headset.
But where previous gaming headsets failed at music, this one really shines especially with the simulated surround sound using DTS X v2.0 it just somehow processes the stereo sound in such a way that your ears perceive it as being far deeper than a regular stereo headset.
I have used other surround headsets but DTS-X v2.0 just is a massive improvement in the technology over previous surround headsets.
The specs speak for themselves if you compare them to audiophile headsets you really see how great the drivers are in this headset added on to this what DTS X v2.0 can get out of them is why so many people rave about this product.
I’m very fussy about my audio set-up as I stream, game, love to watch movies, create music, and video edit. However, I’ve not just bought another 400 pair of headphones, so my review is based on the quality for value.
BAD: (Because it’s not that bad)
These ARE NOT actually 7.1 (which I knew) but simulated. However, at least in windows, they only show up as a 2 channel device, which means some software will downmix the audio to the headphones, losing detail. I’m hoping this is fixable in future software.
I can’t be certain if this is why the surround isn’t as good as other DTS headphones that do show as multi-channel but for this price and what I’m using them for (gaming, some music, some Netflix) there is an acceptable difference with simulated DTS on.
The microphone suffers a little from being a bit too happy at picking up high frequency ‘S’ sounds, whch is typical of most noise cancelling mics I have tested. I don’t know if this is tunable in the software but if it is, I promise to try and remember to update this review.
The software isn’t really helpful for set-up, perhaps there is a manual there somewhere but some tooltips would be nice!
GOOD:
Let’s start with the EQ presets. I should hate them but coming back to price, and that EQ is hard (for some) the ‘out of the box’ software EQ settings are really rather good! The EQ is fully adjustable, even from a preset, so you can fine tune it.
The chat/voice game mixer is also fantastic in the way it works. In the operating system, you actually get two devices, one for the actual game/video/windows sound and a mono device that you can set discord/teamspeak/mumble/skype (etc) to use. After that, the dial on the headset is a fader which you can then put the bias from full game to full voice comms.
The microphone is very flexible and gives a good range of placement and the noise cancelling really does seem good. What’s also fantastic is the microphone mute is a proper on/off type pushbutton, rather than a press to toggle.
The extra band that suspends the frame is elastic and very comfortable, I don’t feel the weight of these headphones on the top of my head that much at all. Also, the foam of the ear pads isn’t too hard, so I don’t feel pressure on my ears (and I’ve not got small ears, and also wear glasses and I’m not feeling my ears pressed into the glasses but outside sound is nicely removed)
There is a ‘live preview’ feature available in the software itself, which is useful for setting up your levels, rather than having to do this in the operating system. However, this lets you know what your operating system hears, there is a small amount of latency. So there is a ‘party trick’ in the software. A feature called ‘Mic Sidetone’ routes the microphone directly inside the headphones, with 4 levels from off to high, meaning you can test, or always get to hear yourself, without needing to set this in the OS)
On the subject of controls, you can adjust the auto power off setting from the software from 5, 10, 30, 60, or 90 minutes and, of course, disable this function)
A quick final note, the software allows you to save multiple configurations, which means you can fine tune your audio environment for different usage (games/video/video conferencing) and recall these settings quickly, rather than needing to find a ‘one setting for all’ or having to tweak the settings every time!
GREAT, but how do they sound?
Well, they don’t sound like a 400 set of headphones and they have no right to at this price! However, even without all the extra utility and gaming features, the sound is better than some playback only headphones I have bought at this price and up to the 200 mark. If you’re happy (and able) to play around with the EQ settings I think you’ll find a sound that fits what you want, I certainly have and in a fairly short space of time. I’ve already done some gaming, movie play back (Star Wars Episode 2 sounded really good after a couple of minutes creating a movie profile) and made my brain light up with some Prodigy, Disturbed, and Beethoven (yes, I’m that nerd!)
Final Notes:
The USB sound card is very clean, I’m not seeing any noise coming through that shouldn’t be there. The USB cable for this is about 1.5m so is long enough for anywhere I need it, without having too much cable to worry about. It also has a fairly effective anti-slip rubber ring on the base. There are line in and line out ports, which I have yet to test, so no idea if this just plays to/from the headphones, or if that sound goes in/out of the operating system as well.
You get an OK length USB charge cable, which is just long enough for me as I have my PC close to my chair but if you need something longer, go buy a good long Anker cable for it. You also get a ‘smart phone’ 3.5mm (if you’ve still got a phone with a 3.5mm) that connects stereo and mic to a usb input on the headphones, meaning you can go analogue if you need to (but again, I’ve not tested this as I don’t really need to)
VERDICT
Well, when my wife finally gives up on her Logitech ‘real DTS’ headset, she’s already said she wanted a pair of these and while I’d happily let her pay more, or buy her something more expensive myself, I think we’ll be owning a second pair of these in the not too distant future, so yes, I’m very happy with them!
