This is a fun and easy game for a group. As the second version, building on the first outer space version, they made some good modifications of the game. The only downside: after 2-3 rounds the playing cards get sticky, as if they’ve been played with for years. Company could have spent a little more on the quality of product used for the cards.
My gaming friends and I really like this game. I think it’s 10x better than the original game The Crew. There’s more variety and the missions are more flexible. A great co-op game that challenges your logic skills. Highly recommended!
This game offers a great new way to play the crew (in comparison to the older version). It is easy to learn and is an enjoyable game where players must work together in order to achieve a variety of different objectives as you explore the sea.
This game solves a lot of issues I have with coop games, people who tell others how to play. People can’t discuss as a round goes on. It also adds an interesting element to trick taking games by being a coop game.
Excellent trick taking game with a nice amount of complexity. Not as easy to grasp if you aren’t already familiar with the concept of a trick taking game because players aren’t allowed to communicate with each other.
Me and my family played through the original Crew and found it an enjoyably difficult challenge. This game continues that legacy. Not only does Mission Deep Sea have the same energy of cooperative family play combined with intense focus and puzzle, but it improves it in some ways. And because the base rules are nearly identical to the original, existing players can immediately pick up how to play. The most notable improvement for me is in the tasks. Mission Deep Sea has a wider variety of tasks that spice up the gameplay. There is also a higher degree of randomness in the selection of task cards for each mission. The downside to this is that we are often caught in a scenario where the task is rendered impossible because of the card distribution, and we must redeal or be forced to use the Call for Help feature. All in all, this game is very good for people who enjoyed the first game and want more challenge.
If you enjoy trick taking games you should love this game (and the original Crew). In regards to this newer version vs the original — I have found this newer version to be easier to teach to new people as the goals are much easier to understand. It lacks having the smaller identical cards that the original had, which for whatever reason seemed to confuse a lot of people when they were learning it. Also, the Deepwater version has a mechanism for making the missions equal no matter the number of players (in other words, some of the missions in the original Crew were easy for 3 players and virtually impossible for 5 players) — but this version irons that out by using a mechanism that will get few or more tasks in the mission depending on the number of people playing in order to keep a similar difficulty. Which is great. All in all, we have loved the original Crew, and feel that this version is a little bit better. We have had hours and hours of enjoyment playing both.
Is definitely worth picking up and adding it to your game Box.
This game is so frigging good! The last Crew was great. I couldn’t imagine an improvement, but I think this is better. It’s more variable and more replayable. The missions can change every hand.
If you don’t play truck taking games like Hearts, Spades, or Eukre this is going to be tough to learn and tougher to get good at, but it’s probably worth it IMO.
Everybody says it’s no good at two players. I disagree. I like it at two. Is a different game and setting it up isn’t as straightforward, but it’s still good.
I’m not much into co-op games, but his one is fun and easy to teach & learn.
I purchased this game because I loved the original by the same creators. I like how they updated the tasks to make it more difficult but still doable and fun.
This game is awesome. Nice add-on for the original The Crew: Quest for Planet Nine. However, like the original game, the playing cards are very low quality. The graphics are nice, but the uncoated pasteboard cards wear out really fast.
My family of 4 (older teens and parents) loved the 1st version of this game and I was excited to see a 2nd version. They’ve updated and changed it so that it’s more than just new window dressing for the new version. As a rule our family does not enjoy typical “cooperative” games as we have too many who want to dictate strategy and game play for everyone. But these games remove that issue for us by limiting communication. We have played a lot of Spades and Hearts as a family so we are very comfortable with trick taking card games. We accidentally played this game for 5 hours the first time! We highly recommend it. It has lots of replay and plays differently with different number of people too. The cards themselves are quality material and beautiful artwork.
Easy to learn trick taking game with joint goals. Win as a team, lots of fun.
I’ve only played the two player variant of the game but right now it’s the game we keep off the shelf and on the table to keep going back to. It seems like it will be even better with 3 or more people.
Plays exactly the same as the original, but the task cards are way more interesting. If you love the original you’ll love this even more.
Very good game, especially if you like trick taking games
I loved The Crew. It’s a trick-taking card game with an unusual twist: instead of always trying to win tricks you are trying to complete certain tasks together, and you can only communicate about your hands in a limited way.
If you’ve played Spades or Hearts or Bridge or Euchre or Pinochle, among others, you already know how to play trick-taking games. The Crew has a slightly unusual deck, with four color suits numbered 1-9, plus a special suit of trumps numbered 1-4.
In The Crew, you’re working together to complete a set of tasks during the deal or “mission”. But each mission, you can only communicate one color card (not trump) from your hand, specifying whether it is the lowest, highest, or only card of that color in your hand.
In the original The Crew, the tasks are almost all of the form “this player must win the 3 of blues”, sometimes along with ordering in which the tasks must be completed. This was great.
In The Crew: Mission Deep Sea, they made the tasks even better. Much better. “I will win none of the first 3 tricks”. “I will win more pink than green cards”. “I will win the 9 of greens with a trump”. “I will win the 2 of trumps and no other trumps”. In one recent 3-player game, we got “I will win a trick of which the card values are all greater than 5” and also “I will win a trick of which the card values are all less than 7” — and all the tasks had to go to the same player! So could we arrange for three 6s to come out in one trick? As it happened, yes! It’s a delightful challenge.
I love this game and if you enjoy trick-taking games and/or interesting cooperative games, you will too. If you like the original The Crew, you will probably like this one even more.
The rules are the same as traditional The Crew. I really like some of the new missions though. Creates a need for new and interesting strategies.
This is a co-op trick taking game with a twist. Excellent game!
Really liked the original, this is even better.
It seems like there will be greater variety and replayability. The original is great, but it can be a bit repetitive with having to get certain cards out in certain orders.
Also, the 2 player version is great. That was my only knock on the original was that you had to have 3+ players.
I own both The Crew and The Crew – Mission Deep Sea. This game is a lot better and I wouldn’t waste my money on the first version. Seriously, don’t buy the first one, just buy this version and you will be super satisfied.
I won’t go into a lot of details about the game (other reviewers have), but it is a fun twist to a typical trick taking game, that brings a lot of strategy and group fun. The only collaborative trick-taking game I have played and it is a party favorite after the first night of play
Love the game, and I’m thrilled to have gotten it while it’s so hard to track down.
If you and your playing group enjoyed the original, this is a must-own. It adds wonderful challenges to an already-great system.
This is a great sequel to the first one. And I love that we can keep playing because of the smaller cards. It will never be the same. Such a fun concept. Can not recommend this game enough. If you like trick taking games these are the best.
The task cards make a lot of difference over the original. If you like trick taking coop get it you won’t be disappointed.
See title. Or better yet see this game’s entry on Board Game Geek. If you like cooperative games or card games or trick taking games then you will love this game!
