I like this sat nav. I am a confirmed TomTom user and have been for a lot more yrears than I care to think about 😉 so this new 7″ one was a real eyeopenr for me. As yet I have to use it on the open road, weather permitting,we are going on a trip to W. Wales next week so I’ll update on its performance then. Forgot to say that I like the new mount for this 7″ model.

I got caught speeding. Twice. On the same stretch of road at the same time three days apart. I needed something that showed me what the speed limits were, what I was doing & could alert me if I transgressed. I was in a 30 going to a 40 & had sped up and was caught 50 metres before the increased speed applied. Anyway..

This has that feature as well as picking the routes and all the other stuff TomTom is famous for. I went for the 7″ over the 5″ as it makes a difference being able to see clearly the stuff you need at a glance. I think, so far, it’s a neat unit. Positioning something of this size takes a bit of choosing but I can’t see it being obtrusive if placed correctly.

Brilliant piece of equipment. Technology is a bit baffling but I am of the older generation, I am finding my way around it.
Certainly recommend it. I am confounded that it automatically alters my route due to traffic congestion. Very pleased overall

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMuch more readable, the GPS has evolved and is really good. No jerkiness, easier to follow in complicated junctions. So far no bad surprises such as turning off at a critical moment.
I really like that updating the Europe map when the GPS received, it divides each country up and updates each also separately, instead of one giant 8 Gb download as it was previously.
I drove 250 miles in the UK than today 1100 km in Spain and all the speed cameras were exactly as indicated.
Downside: it’s very large and I wish I’d bought a smaller size. I’m tall so I can see over the top of it without a problem but it blocks the view for a shorter person when positioned on top of the dashboard.
Pity also the travel bag ordered separately didn’t arrive at the same time as I had to travel.
I also don’t see other world maps that I use such as Africa so I guess these have to be downloaded and installed.
Very satisfied with the product and much better than using Google maps or Waze.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersMy Go 6000 screen cracked, so navigation became a problem. This unit was intended to replace like for like. I had problems setting the new unit up, it wouldn’t accept wifi access codes, and wouldn’t connect to Tom Tom. I had to seek advice from the user forum, and learned it needed a GPS satellite fix before anything would work, and then things worked well. It doesn’t suggest a destination when I turn it on, it has no local time indication, It runs the battery flat if I forget to physically switch it off when powered down, I don’t like reliance on my mobile phone, Fuel price indicators are so far off that they are useless. As with the Old 6000, the voice control frequently responds to random phrases thrown out by the radio. CAZ zones have recently become an issue for me, and I don’t understand why these are not regarded as Toll roads, which both sat navs are supposed to be able to route around. So Five years on, and not quite as good as the old unit it’s replacing, but still much much better than using a smart phone in the car.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI don’t think I would ever buy another Tomtom customer service is rubbish consistently telling me I don’t have camera coverage then telling me I do after contacting them and one fixed camera I pass regularly it often doesn’t respond either going or returning ironically my car sat nav is also Tomtom that’s not much better even when there connected to my iPhone via Bluetooth

Pleased with this sat nav, only but needs changing is the charger port in the cradle, as it is at the bottom sometimes falls loose when driving

I’ve been using TomTom sat navs for about 12 years. but 2 years ago when I decided to buy a new sat nav, I went with a Garmin. I was attracted by the built in dash cam. Not the best purchase I ever made, it was slow, even slower when you missed a turn and it had to re route, sometimes having to pull over to let it catch up. Dash cam quality wasn’t brilliant either. So decided to go back to TomTom. Read good reviews about the discover. I purchased one from Amazon warehouse which had 90 off because it had a scratch. On arrival I couldn’t see any scratches. It started up ok and then proceeded to download 18gb of updates. All was fine with it until I had it in the car and connected it to my phone for live traffic. It crashed. Kept doing the same every time I tried to connect to my phone. So sent it back. Big shout out to Amazon, first time I’ve ever had to return anything to them and it was a doddle. Got my money back within 2 days.
Anyway, ordered a brand new one. This one works fine. No issues, updated itself and connects to my phone no problem.
Love the big screen, it’s very clear and easy to read. Went with the 6″ as the 7 was too big for my liking. Address input is easy and it’s found everything I’ve entered so far. Instructions are clear and lane assistance is really clear (unlike the Garmin) One thing I do like is being able to plan my route on my pc or phone and then send it to my TomTom. It also displays fuel prices along your route and weather at your arrival point. Of no use to me but my wife likes it. Menu is easy to use and clear and the display can be customised to your liking. Never used voice control in the past and unlikely to with this unit.
Any negatives? I think for the price speed cameras should be lifetime, like the maps.
Big trip through Europe coming up soon. Looking forward to (hopefully) stress free navigation.

Had always used my phone as my satnav. Decided it’s time to use a dedicated device. Good screen size and responsive touch screen. It’s also fast to search and load up the map. Don’t expect it to be as responsive and fast as a smartphone – but it’s the best user experience I’ve ever had for a dedicated satnav device. To make to most of the satnav make sure your phone has WiFi hotspot or Bluetooth tethering. I tried both and the latter is more battery friendly. One downside is the map is not as updated as those you find on online satnav/mapping apps – even TomTom’s own map on the Android app is more updated than that on this device – in spite of TomTom advertising that there would be weekly updates.

    Connection to PC can be a bit hit and miss with no error code / correction prompts detailed;
    Having selected a new “Destination” / POI, sending it to the device can (sometimes) happen with no confirmation message;
During said transfer, all of my existing “My Places” disappeared without trace with no way of retrieving them.
Good clear display once these wee problems have been overcome.

Much more responsive than the previous edition and that alone makes the upgrade worth it. The wifi updating is also, as promised, significantly faster. Some of the new features are not as useful as they are made to appear however, the fuel price feather for example has not managed to give me a correct price yet! All in all though a great little satnav device.

When i first got the unit i was not 100% happy. I connected a few devices to it and it had issues with connectivity. The trick was only connect one device. Once that was resolved i got to say its the best unit to have. The screen is massive and very clear. The processing speed is unheard of. (Really fast)

There is no built in sim so for traffic updates and petrol station prices you will need to be connected to a phone for the data. But it does work.
    Would I recommend that’s a 100% yes.

It’s the best Sat Nav out there in my mind.

As a user of Tom Tom sat navs for the last 15 or so years this holds no real surprises.
It boots up a lot quicker than my old one (4 years old) as well as acquiring satellite fixes.
The screen is nice and big showing direction’s really clearly.
Always prefer a separate sat nav unit as opposed to just using my phone with tom tom app.
If my sat nav fails I have my phone to get me to where I need to go if my phone fails I have my sat nav to get me home.

I’ve had Tomtom since they first launched. My last one was to 620 which included world maps, traffic updates and everything for life, this does not which was understandable but a definite disincentive to buy. It also was a hands free if you need it.

This new one is just a satnav, but the screen is much sharper, Bigger and quicker. The interface has been streamlined which means old hands like me lose the ability to customise it like before, but it is simpler.

I haven’t done a big trip with it yet, but so far I’d say it does the main function better, but at an extra cost of about 30pa.

I did try the app which is good and way cheaper, but nothing like as 100% dependable as an actual satnav.

I had expected them to improve the volume, they have not.

The particular omission that has irritated me is that I am unable to record and safe a route that could be of future value and interest. I routinely used this facility on my GO 5200. On the other hand, the Points of Interest and useful identification lists, such as garages (with car makes) etc are streets better than predecessor units.
Overall I am content with the 90% of what I had hoped for but regret that previous features have been discarded. Mydrive continues to be a very mixed bag with frequent hang ups and difficulties in completing and saving new routes.

Faster processor makes it much easier to use. Built in traffic information makes it easy to detour around road closures. High resolution screen makes it easier to follow.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersEvery time I buy a new sat-nav, I wonder if this will be the last one and should I be shifting over to apps on my phone instead. I have been using TomTom since the very first Go model and for various reasons, I like having a dedicated, seperate unit for naviation. My car has an out of date, rubbish system built in (no apple / android support) – my phone has google maps and Waze, but when it comes to long journeys, I just like to have a proper sat nav that just does it’s thing.

My previous model was the 6″ TomTom Go 6000 – it was good – served me well – although it was getting a bit slow but most importantly the battery was no longer holding any charge. I needed it for a holiday trip and the replacement battery I’d ordered hadn’t turned up in time, so I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to the 7″ TomTom Go Discover. There were a couple of things that attracted me – my eye sight isn’t what it was, so the extra inch sounded like a positive (as well as the higher res screen that enabled) and the 4x cpu performance also sounded like a good upgrade considering my 6000 was often slow at places like large roundabouts where you don’t know where to exit.

So, the device arrived and in many ways it’s identical to the 6000 – the main thing being that any routes or places synced with MyTomTom are all present on the new device which is great.

The sharpness and size of the 7″ model’s screen are a great improvement – not only is it easier to read the extra features such as traffic updates / POI’s on the map, but you can see more of the surrounding map without having it blocked by the side bar etc.

Yes, it no longer has it’s own sim card for live updates but it’s a simple matter to link it to your phone via bluetooth (you need to turn on internet sharing over bluetooth) and it then gets its live updates over that connection.

The other new thing for me compared to my 6000 is that you no longer need to sync with a PC for updates – it has wifi built when it’s on and in range of your SSID, it will update it’s OS / maps automatically. This is a welcome addition for me.

The OS has also been tweaked since my previous model – I don’t know if it is specific to the Go Discover models but I had no issues shifting from the old GUI to this version – the main parts are the same and the new things are logical and easy to work out – I did not need to read any instuctions or researchign anything – I was fully configured and up and running in a few minutes. It took me loonger to work out how to turn on internet sharing over bluetooth on my phone.

The mount is good and the sucker is large and feels very secure on the windscreen – connecting the device to the mount is slightly more fiddly than the 6000 as the connnector isn’t at the bottom but is on the back so you need to slide it around until you’ve worked out exactly where it is – similarly the magnet holdign it in place is stronger than the 6000 so taking it off the mount also requires a bit more force but once you’ve worked out the best way to do it, it is not an issue (for me, it requires holding it from the top and pulling it down and forward).

The functionality of the device is the same as any other TomTom if you are famiilar with it so I won’t cover that – if you like TomTom’s, you’ll like this.

Whether the screen size or cost can be justified is a personal choice – for me, where my windscreen is quite far from the driving position, the extra screen size is worth it and physically it is not much bigger than the 6000 so it didn’t change anything for me in terms of storing the device or blocking my field of view etc. If you don’t need / want a 7″ screen, the smaler screen sizes would be just as good and cheaper.

I did eventually get the replacement battery for the 6000 (you can find it on Amazon) and it was a very simple job to open the device and swap out the batter (you can find how to video’s on youtube). That fixed my charging issues with my older device, however now I have used the Go Discover, I won’t be going back to the 6000 so will pass that on to someone else.

For me TomTom sat navs are still the best out there in terms of the user interface and the look which for me is the most important part. It’s a good quality sat nav with a large clear and easy to read screen. The speaker is nice and loud which makes directions easy to hear. I know it doesn’t have a dedicated modem for live traffic but I actually don’t mind that it connects through my phone as I always have it with me anyway. The larger screen definitely makes it a lot easier to use so I would always go for the biggest size you can get as it will be worth it in the end. The only small issue I had was the screen was a bit difficult to use in direct sunlight because of the glare, I ended up getting a matte screen protector which resolves that issue so it would be nice if they included that as an option with it. FYI, if you do use a matte screen protector, there’s a slight loss of clarity in the screen but this is normal and it’s still more than useable.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI have just returned my 7″ Discover for a 6″. The 7″ doesn’t fit easily under the screen of either of my cars without obscuring the view, even though I’m 6ft tall and prefer an upright driving position. The hi res screen is superb, so the smaller device, which also has hi-res will be better for me and I suspect also for most users. Even the 5″ is worth considering, you’ll get the same live traffic etc
No criticism of the device itself, everything works well as most reviews confirm. I bought it for the live traffic, which is astonishingly good. On my first trial run it alerted a 1 minute delay for roadworks near my home which had been ongoing for a few days. As I drove past the works had finished, last traffic cones etc were being collected causing a delay of a few minutes for traffic coming the other way. By the time I returned 15 minutes later the roadworks were cleared, and so had the live traffic warning! Amazing.
You need to tether the Tom Tom to your phone to get live traffic, other users have pointed out that the older devices had a built in Sim, but these are typically 2G and therefore probably will have a limited future. I think the Discover is a better long term purchase if you’re buying new, but if you’re happy with your old 2G device there’s probably less incentive to upgrade
My only gripe is that the there is no option to turn off the map display above a certain speed, which I appreciated in my old Go 520, you don’t need the map when you’re cruising up the motorway when it becomes a distraction, especially with a 7″ screen in your face.

In a world where most cars now have satellite navigation it’s easy to forget how useful it is to have real-time traffic information and accurate up-to-date maps. My partners car has built-in navigation although the maps are around six years old so we have been mainly using this in that vehicle. Incredibly easy to set up and updated quickly via Wi-Fi meaning you no longer need a separate computer for complexities of accounts to get it up-to-date and ready to use. The large wide screen display made it easy to use and the quality of the graphics was excellent. Pizza last traditional satnav I’ve used the brightness and resolution of the screen for excel that of an inbuilt car navigation system and the live traffic functionality works seamlessly. Makes a really simple and easy solution to ensure it is correctly and card to your screen and doesn’t wobble or vibrate. Premium product which is evident through the build quality and the usability – sure there are cheaper solutions but the quality of this makes it well worth its price tag.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNot much to dislike – the biggest gripe is you have to download updates for maps using wireless – you cant use the USB cable to use your cable internet.

Woah, I thought my old day nav was good until I had this !

It was easy to set up using the guide and once connected to WIFI you can update for free.

There are so many features including voice control, 3D buildings, day and night colours, speedometer, traffic alert and diversion, road closure alerts an much more.

The quality is fantastic and the 7″ display makes it so easy to navigate.

This sat nav is fast , responsive and in my opinion flawless. It’s made driving through cities and unknown roads stress free. Would highly recommend !

TomTom Sat Nav Go literally saved my bacon, I forgot I had this in my car and used my phone to direct me the other day while I was looking at houses, I didn’t have a clue on the area so when I was told to go left I did, then when I got down the road as far as I was willing to go, I honestly thought I was going to fall off a cliff edge. I realised that I had this in my glove box and almost cried tears of joy. It took a couple of minutes to find a decent signal and get me a route, but it took me down a path that I was happy with as I could avoid the road I had just taken. Needless to say, this will be taking over my route planning and directing now. The screen is large enough that you can easily see it at a glance but small enough that its not obtrusive. I found this super easy to use and nicely sized, I haven’t used a sat nav for years as my phone map is great, but I think I will be going back to a sat nav as since my phone has updated I have found this to be safer and smarter.

Very happy with this TomTom sat Nav system. The display is a touch screen. Easy to set up especially if you already have a TomTom account.
Has the possibility to talk your commands to it. It did have a little difficulty understanding a Scottish accent when asking for some address, This is generally an issue with most voice-controlled devices. Lots of options and setting available to play with to get it optimised to your needs and requirements.

I have not owned a Tom Tom for about 7 years now since my car has had a built in Sat Nav. The issue with the car one is that it is out of date and I have to pay a lot of money to get it updated so I have not bothered. I took this Sat Nav for a spin over the last few days to see how they have progressed since last owning one.

First thing I noticed about this , is how quick and snappy the interface is. It is much faster and responsive. The maps included are now on the much larger storage, before on my old unit, I would have to connect it to a computer and remove maps to make room for bigger updated maps, it was a mess and put me off Tom Tom for life. They have obviously taken on board feedback, tech has progressed and I can now finally fall in love with Tom Tom again.

The mount system is super easy ,no more clunky knobs and brackets. It’s more simple and clips on and off in seconds and doesn’t take up your windscreen space. The screen is gorgeous, larger and high definition. Colours pop, text is sharp and clear and even in direct light I can see the display well.

The menu is similar to the old one I had, still icon driven, mostly user friendly. It’s touch screen and responsive. I love that maps update now without plugging into computers, using USB leads, it does it over WIFI. There is live data like traffic and parking which is shown in real time. I tethered by putting my phone on a hotspot and it auto connected every time. I have unlimited data, but I don’t think it used much data anyway. There are some speed camera updates but it’s a one-year trial. There is a charge after, but maps will continue to update for free. There is no built in sim so the live services does need your phone connected.

With its snappy interface, world-wide maps, online services and amazing screen, Tom Tom is now back in the race as one of the best Sat Navs on the market.

Just got this as an upgrade from a Go 5200, and have been very impressed with it. The thing that hits you first is the quality of the screen, with a much higher resolution than previous TomTom Go sat navs, and it is incredibly clear. It’s also very responsive for things like dragging the map around and search, and quite happily plots 3 alternative routes to a given destination without any delay.

The navigation and menu interface is slightly different to my Go 5200, but you quickly get used to it. The additional services of fuel prices and free parking spaces I can see coming in very handy – will be interesting to see if I feel compelled to renew them after the 1 year free trial.

Otherwise it’s the usual TomTom qualities – decent route calculations, accurate traffic, and clear spoken directions. Increased frequency of map updates over previous devices (weekly, I believe) will also instil further faith in its routing.

Only a couple of things that put me off giving it 5 stars – firstly there’s no built-in data connection (it uses your phone instead), and also it doesn’t handle hands-free phone calls or display incoming messages from your phone – all of which my Go 5200 does. I understand that most cars already support hands-free, however displaying smartphone messages is less common in cars – which my Go 5200 filled the gap for. Hopefully this will come with a later software update though.

That all said though, these are fairly minor niggles on what is otherwise a very premium sat nav, which I’m very happy with.

I am impressed with the clear screen display easily visible particularly on a larger vehicle. Easy to download the weekly updates without the need of a PC although I can update using a PC if I need to. I have created and saved routes on it or In the My Drive App on my phone or the MyDrive Website and sent them to the unit. The excellent Traffic facility is constantly evaluating my journeys and has suggested where appropriate faster routes around delays also Cameras warnings and Off Street Parking The newly designed holder supports this larger unit well and Bluetooth has connected easily to my iPhone 12 mini and worked well with very little data usage.

Already with my previous models I was very happy with the navigation in general, which reacts much better to traffic jams, etc., than other navigation systems I used so far (standalone & build-in). This is great here as well!

Disadvantage was for me so far that the Tomtom devices reacted rather slowly to inputs etc. That has improved significantly with this model, the processor is now super fast and responsive. The display is also easy to read even in poor lighting conditions.

All in all, a great new product that I can definitely recommend!
