I don’t do a huge amount of work with chisels, but I know the benefits of having a sharp edge. Sadly, as a self-taught amateur, I’ve never been able to master the skill of sharpening the cutting edga on a chisel, so when I saw this I jumped on it.
I’m a fan of Trend products and figured it’d be well built, which it is. The carriage slides easily and it’s a pretty basic tool. I practiced with a badly chipped chisel and was able to grind out the chips but couldn’t get the cutting edges sharp. I was disappointed by the lack of published instructions but didn’t have the time (or inclination) to hit YouTube, which is generally my goto when I want to find out how something works.
I have no doubt that I’ll figure it out, it’s not Elon Musk stuff after all, but for now it’s 4* and a slightly frustrated “harumph”, which will hopefully soon be replaced by an “ooh” and then a “hooray!”. Buy with confidence, fellow shed dwellers!
This is not the easiest of tools to use with instructions that just confuse things
Some extras which are not included are probably worth buying on top of the price you pay.
If what you need to sharpen is very blunt then consider something with a wheel attach to a motor which may give better results
