A very sturdy piece of kit. Easy to assemble. Good price. Everything you would expect from a recognised manufacturer of mowers.
My first lawnmower came as I moved to my first place.
Did some research and came across this toy.
I have a sloped lawn and some obstacles.
The speed of the self propelled system is a bit too fast and not really ideal for this terrain. Slower would have been ideal.
Also it’s tricky to manoeuvre around curves.
It’s essentially like walking an energetic medium sized dog in a lead.
Overall liked the package that also included the oil. A plastic funnel would have been a nice touch as filling the oil tank is not easy.
Good product and recommend it. Good price too!
I only used a couple of times but so far so good.
This mower is able to tackle large jobs
The blade rotates quite fast and is effective at picking up cut grass into collecting box
Also good at mulching cuttings
This is my first petrol powered mower and I love it. Straight forward to assemble, tbh there isn’t much to assemble because it’s mostly put together out of the box. Starts first time, every time. Only critism is it’s a bit loud…. But then again, I’ve only ever had electric mowers up until now so might be me.
Bag is a little on the small side too, but that’s no big deal. Just means it’s manageable when filled
I bought this as I needed a self propelled mower for my garden which is on a steep upwards incline.
Came in a box and was relatively easy to put together. The brake handle has no instructions on fitting which took me a little while to work out. The rest was super simple. It is great and works really well. I have to avoid using the self propelled bit going downhill as it was too fast and I slipped several times on the damp cut grass. Ha ha, yes I was on my bum on the floor. That said it is superb at going uphill and has made cutting my grass a much easier job. Only negative so far (had it a couple of weeks) is it is damn heavy and is too heavy for me to carry up and down the steps up to my grass. Think it is because it is self propelled so a bit heavier than a push mower. Luckily my neighbours son carries up and down for me.
First impressions:
Nice quick delivery on this machine. It is certainly robust and well made. Very easy to assemble (took me half an hour) and after adding oil and petrol started immediately without complaining.
Pros –
16″ blade means it can get into smaller areas if required.
Quite light to push/operate
Good grass box
I like to one-handle height adjustment.
Cons-
The clutch is wicked! There is no slipping in to ease traction, it’s either in or out.
The travel speed is possibly too fast, especially if the clutch is let in without a bit of care. Maybe the manufacturers would consider slowing it down a bit.
Cutting height could be a fraction lower for fine grass (although it will go below its official setting).
Fine on a flat lawn but loses traction/jams if there is a minor bump or dip. Not difficult to get out of, just annoying. See above.
Overall quite happy with this purchase. we shall see how well it lasts.
On my third petrol lawnmower and realise the importance of reading reviews and descriptions.
Arrived exactly as described – trackeddelivery and in perfect condition.
Mostly assembled- except for handles and a couple of clips.
Filling the oil is as tricky as everyone says. Really need a funnel with a bit of tubing. Was expecting this but still tricky.
Followed all instructions and it started first time, really effortless action. Grass was cut well and every blade of grass was in the bag.
Self-propelled was easier than pushing (duh, that’s why I got it!!). Not too speedy for me. Is stop and start at first, but soon get a feel.
Has a good robust feel to it – and didn’t seem to use much petrol on first cut. Very impressed and would recommend
Easy assembly, started on 4th pull. I have a large very bumpy lawn that has been very difficult to mow with my old push mower. It would take me several hours each week to do it and would leave me exhausted! This one is a breeze to use, it’s powerful so it doesn’t bog down under load and the powered back wheels have plenty of torque to pull it along. I’ve only used it once so far but I’m very happy with it. I will no longer dread cutting the grass!
Mows the lawns well and is manoeuvrable enough. But next time might get the one with electric starter since my partner doesn’t quite have the strength to pull that string.
Works!!! starts first time and is the right size for my top lawn. yes grass box not the biggest but its a 16″ mower for a small lawn, I should cut the grass more so there’s less when I cut :0)
If I ever find a 23″ version cheap I will buy that for my front lawn!!!!!
Amazing mower has the power to go uphill too, very good buy
Worked very well in dry months, started getting sticky after around 20 hours use. Currently resolving the stuck pull cord issue. Will update when/ if it is resolved……WTS
arrived on time was easy to assemble. followed instructions for starting and starts on first pull most of the time. has cut my lawn cutting time by half and gives a good work out at the same time. My lawn is uneaven but no problem for this mower.
Having a lawn with a slope the lawnmower took all the hard work out of cutting it.
Good Mower firt time starter well built .only Gripe i have its just a bit too fast not really a big problem if you go in a straight line just a bit awkward at corners i just push it round corners until i get on the straight bits apart from that a good mowe
This is an amazing lawnmower for the price, and better than my previous one, which cost a lot more. I can’t fault it!!
I BROUGHT THIS MOWER BECAUSE NEEDED A SELF PROPELLED ONE. THE TROUBLE IS I CANNOT KEEP UP WITH IT,ITS NEARLY PULLED ME OVER.ALSO IT DOSE NOT CUT THE GRASS PROPERLY WHEN MOVING SO FAST.HOW CAN IT BE SLOWED DOWN. GETTING MORE DISAPOINTED WITH THIS MOWER.LOOKED AT THE BLADES THEY WERE BLUNT.TRIED TO UNDO THE BOLT TO TAKE BLADE OFF ,CANNOT MOVE IT. I HAVE HAD A GOOD RETURN REPLY FROM PLATINUM HOME TO TAKE THE MOWER BACK.THANKS TO PLATINUM HOME FOR A GOOD SERVICE .
This mower is excellent value. The only thing you have to put together is the handle which was a simple 3 minute job. Put some oil and petrol in and away you go. It’s easy to start and excellent on petrol. We used it for about an hour without stopping and the petrol tank looked as full as before we started. I would recommend this mower to anyone.
Fantastic machine – very well built. Gives a good line and is highly reliable. Owned for two years – no problems at all.
After some of the reviews I was slightly apprehensive regarding what I had purchased. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It took a couple of minutes to assemble. I measured out the oil and used a funnel to fill. Filled the fuel, and pressed the purge 3 times, pulled the cord and off it went. Took a couple of minutes to get use to the controls. Really pleased with my new toy. Cutting the grass suddenly becomes a pleasure. What typically took 90 minutes, is now complete in 25 minutes. I’d have no problem in recommending this product based on its first outing.
Sturdy with super light manoeuvre which I found even better than a self propelled mower. Cuts perfectly though some may find the lowest cutting level too low if the lawn is a bit bumpy in places but it has a variety of cutting levels. Overall exceptionally pleased with this product and a super fast delivery too.
Always had an electric mower, decided to try the Webb, and wasn’t disappointed
Easy to handle really cuts well good on fuel like one lever to change height cutting would recommend
delivered on time easy to assemble and use. well pleased with purchase
Quick delivery and great value for money, good product, does the job well!
Grass collection bag find it flimsy for the amount of grass it takes would have preferred a different material i.e. PVC
As it was one of the less expensive petrol mowers, I had low expectations.
However, the quality seems excellent…very nicely made. It even came with a bottle of oil. Wish I had known as I had also purchased oil as I thought it would come without any.
Cuts grass really nice, so much lighter than my other lawn mower, would highly recommend
Very easy to start and use, unfortunately the grass collection isn’t very good and the mulching gets stuck on the flap. Other than that I’m very pleased.
I am very impressed with the quality of this mower. The cut is neat and offers 7 height adjustment. However, this mower is self propelled and is set but the manufacturer, it doesn’t allow the power or speed to be adjusted. This means the mower is extremely fast and powerful and too much for me to handle, I wish I hadn’t bought the self propelled version. I did it to make life easier for myself but in actual fact, it’s almost impossible for me to use.
Very easy to assemble good value for money, cuts really well. Only slight disappointment was that the engine is single speed
I am really impressed with the Webb lawnmower. It arrived quickly and came with the oil ready to fill up, which is a bonus. It was very easy to assemble and set up ready to go within a very short time. Having read the instructions regard starting I primed the system with 3 pumps and it struck up on the first pull with very little effort, almost taking me by surprise (contra to my existing lawnmower that needs multiple pulls & fettling to start and keep going). Once struck up it worked well and was just as easy to restart after emptying the grass collector. The collector is also good with it being made of mesh and easy to see when it’s full without having to regularly check the contents. The lawnmower is fairly light and easy to use. Having read other reviews, I understand the critism over filling the oil, but this can be overcome by using a small funnel. Overall a great lawnmower for the money.
Medium sized lawns–and tough work–it went where I would otherwise have had to use a strimme
Bought from Webb directly via Amazon (with 10% discount offer). Arrived on time, very easy to assemble and of good quailty construction for the price. No oil included (the 2020 reviews mention there was a bottle of oil in the box), but just takes SAE 30 available from any hardware shop. Put the oil in and fuel and started on the first pull! Made a very neat job of the grass, much better than my ancient Flymo, and it’s quiet for a petrol mower. One minor point is I checked the spark plug gap (was running fine but I like to tinker) and it was a little narrow. Gapped out properly as per the manual and it runs even more smoothly. Over all very decent for the price and hopefully the engine (Webb branded but made by Sanli) will be reliable it some care.
It is a great mower easy to assemble but was damaged on receipt. I contacted the seller who supplied me with a new rope start and engine cover which was the easiest solution. Fortunately I was able to replace the damaged items. Their service was quick for replacements. it would have been nice for the seller to offer a small discount as if I had returned the mower under guarantee they could not have sold it as new.
I bought this in error thinking I had bought a self drive one but is was a push yourself one. I already have one that you have to push so I left it unopened, by the door, to return it. My stepson thought he was being helpful by assembling it and filling it with petrol so I was worried that I might not be able to return it. There were clear instructions on how to empty the tank again and to disassemble for return. It was then picked up promptly by the courier with no fuss or quibble, which I thought was excellent.
Couple of pulls on the starter cord started mowing the lawn very pleased.
This is a heavyweight piece of quality equipment. All metal deck so no matter how battered it might end up, the deck is not going to crack. Relatively easy to assemble – connect the handles really. Fill with petrol and oil. Prime. Pull the cord. Pull it again. Pull it a third time, and away you go. First time out my grass was quite long and very damp. As I cut the grass it drizzled a bit. So I set it at the highest height which took less than a second. Whizzed around. Reduced the height to half way and went again. It didn’t have any problem with wet grass. The handle bolts are a very neat idea – two threads with a gap so you can loosen to fold away but they don’t come all the way off.
Pity therefore that little thought went into the location of the oil filler. Impossible to get a funnel in when the mower is on the flat – got some nice new oil patches on the shed floor as a result. Tip the mower so it is at 45 degrees before filling. You need 400 ml of lawnmower engine oil but the filler neck is small and difficult to see into so measure out 400ml into an old clear plastic jug and if you are lucky that will minimise the spills. I think I might use a big syringe when topping up.
Petrol – use surestart to stop the petrol going stale (where they fix screws sell it). The tank holds 800 ml of petrol but the instructions say fill 80%. You can’t do this because you can’t see into the petrol tank. Again, trusty old plastic jug. Fill to 600ml. Pour in.
It took a minimum of 3 pulls to get it firing. Once fired up it was fine but whilst releasing the handlebar on an electric mower and it cutting out is fine because it starts again instantly, the same idea on a petrol mower is a real pain in the backside. I know it is for safety reasons but very inconvenient if restarting a petrol mower is a chore. I only want it to cut out if I am emtying the grass collector.
If you live in a part of the country where guaranteed dry grass is a rare luxury then a powerful petrol mower really is the only practical solution. Wet or dry, quick and easy enough when it gets going. But this mower isn’t for everyone – it is heavy to lift when assembling and in use, it is a nuisance to start, and topping up the oil is best done outdoors. It takes much more maintenance than an electric one. The instruction booklet is pretty poor.
Overall I’ve given it 4 stars for build quality, speed of cutting my lawn and doing it when wet, quick and easy height adjustment, and a good price point. A star knocked off for poor instructions, the oil filler location, having to pull multiple times to start it, and the auto cut off if you let go of the handlebar. The weight might put some off.
This is a great product, it’s not heavy and easy to maneuver and hight adjustment easy by pulling the lever at the side.
Cuts longer grass no problem.
Worth the money.
love the function where it mows you run after it its brill
This was my first “self propelled” petrol lawnmower – which my son said I MUST buy. My gardener was VERY impressed with the end result. But, unfortunately, it moves too quickly for me, cos I currently have movement restrictions owing to a vertebrae which has slipped out of alignment.
A really good mower with good grass collection capacity. I maybe should have gone for the self propelled upgrade but this would be great for people with small gardens. I’d buy the brand again.
First petrol mower and very impressed with how easy it was to assemble and use. Oil filling is tricky like all other reviews state – needs a funnel otherwise the oil (comes with it) goes everywhere!
Self-drive is quick powerful which makes cutting the grass a fast and easy experience – has saved me an hour versus using a plug-in electric mowe
Good lawnmower never had a petrol one before cuts through grass better than my electric ever did well pleased with the lawnmower good and sturdy well made well worth the money 100%
Key features: 41cm (16″) cut, 132cc, 4 stroke, 2.6kw, 45L box, 26kg (57lb)*, single point height adjustment, self propelled. Arrived with a 0.6L bottle of SAE30 engine oil.
* Presumably dry weight, add weight of oil, petrol, add weight of a full grass box.
Good balance between power, self propelled, grass box capacity, weight, manueverability. Good for small to medium lawns, multiple lawned areas, shaped lawns. Large regular shaped lawns may benefit for a wider cut width and larger grass box.
Other petrol mowers may well have larger width of cut, but they have a larger/heavier deck. They may have a larger grass collection box so fewer trips to the compost heap/garden waste, however a full grassbox can be quite heavy.
The 45L grass box is retained VERY firmly, the mower fills the box to full with no leakage from the base. The opening of the grass box is a bit too small. You have to tease out grass from a full box to start the outflow; you soon get the knack of it.
This mower is small/light enough for use on small to medium lawns, and getting into some awkward areas of irregular shaped lawns (best in manual/push mode).
There is some resistance (compared to a standard push mower) when reversing the mower, this is due to the presence of the accessory drive to the rear axle.
I use the self propel function on straight runs only, it is a little too fast to control along the edge of a curved/shaped lawn and during turns. The mower is not too heavy to push manually. The self propel function comes into its own on longer straight runs; very pleasing to use even on slight inclines with a full box (which is heavy work even with an electric push mower).
I prefer a medium cutting height (setting 4); this leaves a healthy length of grass blade which developes strong roots and resistance to dry conditions. To avoid a tuft of uncut grass you need to overlap slightly on each run. I find it best to overlap slightly more, to prevent the wheels flattening the grass in the same place in both directions. This gives the mower blade opportunity to drawn up/cut the grass that was flattened on the previous run.
As it says in the instructions, best to start off with a push, then engage the self propulsion; this avoids sudden take off/jolting. Also release the self propulsion before coming to a turn.
The position and angle of the oil filler makes it difficult to pour in oil – even with a small funnel. The oil drain plug is just above the deck making draining oil tricky. I bought an oil Syphoning Kit from Amazon which will suck the old oil out of the filler port at the end of the season. I could probably also use this to conveniently insert the new oil (or drain fuel if required).
Cold Start:
Prime 3 times, starts on first pull.
Hot Start:
Manual says no prime, just pull, if that fails, prime once and pull.
The first pull often fails for me, so tend to prime once then a single pull often works. If not, let it rest/cool for a few minutes, then go again.
Pros:
Good value for Money.
Not too noisy.
Good starts from cold.
Single point height adjustment works very well.
Freedom from trailing electric cables; speeds up the job.
Self propulsion is very useful.
Good combination of power, weight, manoeuvrebility.
Cons:
Fumes (as with all petrol mowers)
Hot starts can be a little tricky.
Grass box opening rather small.
Heavier than an electric mower.
Location of oil fill cap and drain bolt not ideal.
No rear roller for striping and mowing over edge of lawn.
Requires more maintenance than electric mower (routine fuel/oil top up, periodic maintenance – oil change, check/replace air filter/spark plug).
Comments:
Would be a winner if it had a rear roller on this neat 16″ mower.
Anyone that has difficulty with cold or hot starts should consider an electric start model. However, they tend to be larger, heavier and less manueverable.
Be aware that there is another 16″ self propelled mower with a smaller engine capacity (120cc); no experience with that model.
Context: We bought a Mountfield SP454 with 44cm cutting width for nearly 300 from B&Q for our 3 uneven and moderately sized lawns. The deck on this mower had a habit of periodically dropping to the lowest height. After two seasons, the deck would not stay up with any load in the grass box. I attempted to repair it, but the deck height adjustment lever relied on a plastic wheel backplate to keep it under tension and there is no support in the backplate to help it resist any lateral tension. It transpired that this mower was a design specific for B&Q which was sub-standard in many respects. It’s only saving grace is that for the two seasons it lasted, it did make a neat cut.
I didn’t like the prospect of spending that much on a mower again only to have it last a year or two as that is more costly than paying someone to mow our lawns. In my research for a replacement I discovered Webb. After reading the reviews in various places, I concluded that the Web Classic was probably the best affordable option. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
It is not perfect, but it is pretty darn good. Assembly was trivial. The bearings in the wheels do make it roll very easily. We opted for the 41cm self-propelled version with the smallest deck because we have to carry the mower down a narrow side alley to reach the back garden. The mower is light enough and the deck stiff enough to make it easy to self propel over uneven and rough ground. The height adjustment is integral to the deck rather than bolted on the side. The large port into the grass box does not easily clog when cutting wet grass.
Amazingly, the supplied manual contains exploded parts diagrams and parts lists. This is hugely advantageous for people who like to maintain and repair things rather than buy new things and wastefully throw away the old things.
There are a few drawbacks however which stop me from awarding the mower 5 stars.
1) The wheels protrude quite a bit from the deck, making the 41cm Webb Classic as wide as the 44cm Mountfield
2) It doesn’t cut as neatly as the Mountfield
3) The grass box doesn’t have a lower lip, so when emptying it is difficult not to drop clippings as you draw it away from the mower
Overall, it is a solid budget option and I would 100% recommend. I’ll be looking at Webb in future for any garden machinery.
Very good service, arrived within three days as it wad ordered over the weekend. Easily assembled and to use. I tried it without drive mechanism when cutting the smaller lawn and it proved very easy to use and when the dive was switched on it propelled the mower quite quickly. I am not sure I actually needed it really but it is there to use. The engine seems powerful and is quiet and although the grass box is smaller than I am use and needs emptying more often it is considerable lighter than the one I used previously an asset when full of damp grass! So all round very pleased
What great value. This is a good mower. It may take a few pulls for the engine to start but I cannot believe the great price. The deck is metal, so is the great blade. The wheels have ball bearings, which is really good for moving the mower. The handle and brake are good quality. There are cheaper versions of this mower, which would cost only a tenner or twenty quid less. Why, when you can have a really good one. Once your on the go with this mower, your fear evaporates and you’ll take on anything in your way. Gardens beware, we are going to get you!
Easy to assemble and set up, detailed instructions included. High quality finish and has a robust feel. The cutting height can be adjusted easily with a large handle on the side. Grass came out great and we are really pleased!
Arrived at 11:40 and back in garage by 12:00 after assembling and mowing the lawn. Not a small lawn either.
As others have said ‘adding the oil is tricky, but no other concerns
Started on the first pull, but I’m a stickler for following instructions. Do that and you should have the same results. Cutting on the lowest setting does not cut short enough for me. I’m thinking of a work around. But great mower.
Excellent product does just what I want it to.Cuts damp grass with no problem, hope it lasts a very long time.
I find cutting the grass a lot easier than my old push mower. Arrived on time, easy to assemble, even came with oil which was a nice surprise. Started first time, cuts well, even through long grass…with cutting height raised. All in all, good value.
Cuts well. Starts usually first or second time. Plenty of height adjustment. It came with oil.
it does our job just fine cuts long grass too
It was easy to put together andhavedone an excellent cut of my lawn.
Money well spent,
Thank you
Very impressed with the mower, very easy to put together.
Just waiting for the grass now
Well built product ,quite heavy but expected. Grass collector needs redesigning, as I found it awkward to get off and on. Overall I’m happy.
This is a serious piece of kit. A lot for your money.
I ordered this lawn mower yesterday afternoon and it arrived within 20 hours!
Assembly was easy, product does what it says.
As others have said, a little tricky to add oil, but then most petrol mowers are designed like this.
Cant fault the prompt service.
Ordered, arrived and lawn cut with 24 hours. What’s not to like?
A great versatile lawn mower however I have now seen the exact mower in a shop in Attleborough Norfolk UK for a quarter of the price !!! And therefore feel I have been ripped off !!!
Great lawnmower. Fast delivery. Although the self propelled is a little on the fast side. I was able to cut the garden in 5 minutes where as with my old electric mower it would have taken 10-15 minutes.
Great machine started up 1st time cuts better than previous mower. Easy to Assemble it was built within 10mins. Plus it arrived with a bottle of engine oil which i didn’t expect. Great value for money defo recommended. Plus arrived 2days earlier than expected especially at this time with covid19. Service second to none defo use them again.
Very well made mower ..feels and looks quality. Only reason for 4 star and not 5 is self propelled handle too close to body and can catch causing it to stutter the machine if you accidentally touch it ….also the oil inlet is in a ridiculous position so without using a funnel of sorts you can make a real mess!
Gripe over it is very powerful and sturdy and easily medium to large lawns cater for.
My husband said that this is the best petrol lawnmower he has had.
Seems like one of the better mowers on the market right now and I have used it 3 times since purchase at the time of writing. I like the height adjustment where the chassis and wheel assembly seem slightly more solid than others I looked at. The catcher has quite a heavy iron frame and netting retainer, which seems a little smaller than I would have expected so fills up fast. Hence only 4 out 5*. Otherwise seems great to use thus far.
Used this mower twice now and both time iv loved using it cuts the grass well starts first time couldn’t as for better and for price well worth i
Excellent mower at a reasonable price. Delivered quickly in current circumstances . Easy to assemble and use.
This is the second petrol lawnmower I have ever owned. I’ve used it 3 times now it is a top class piece of machinery.
I highly recommend it.
Great product, easy to assemble, use, store. Good value, delivered safely and on time.
Excellent lawn mower easy to assemble and well made ,started 1st time (add engin oil first supplied) easy to push did an excellent job of my 30 meter garden and seemed very fuel efficient and not to noisy very happy.
The front wheels seem very low down making the main law more just about touch the ground is this correc
Excellent mower easy to use and assemble great seller would highly recommend
I wanted an easier way to cut the grass on my allotment. This is perfect for the job. Easy to start and relatively quiet. I especially like being able to alter the cut height without stopping the engine as the long lever is easy to reach.
This is my first petrol lawnmower! Assembly was easy, no tools required. Cuts well, self propulsion definitely worth it. Easy to start. Oil filling was a bit fiddly and needed a funnel.
Update: 2 years later, used weekly when the grass grows and still working just fine.
