Very pleased with the soundbar, but unfortunately the remote control is not very few of the functions work on it!
Sounds amazing and you will not be disappointed at all yamaha have always been winners in my book i had a bose sound bar before but this blows the bose out of the water would highly recommend and i checked it is in the top 5 sound bars 2021.
Sounds really good and clear.
Does all i wanted it to do.
And for the money.
Well worth spending
Significantly better quality than TV speakers. The clear voice function is useful and makes a real difference. I probably expected it to be louder. Doesn’t blow you away but adequate for average living room. Quality good. Volume average
Context is everything. If you are looking for something that isn’t 1000+, you clearly aren’t an audiophile and like me, you won’t understand their language. Also phrases like “it’s good for the money” are hard to interpret, as 300 to one person, means more than the same value to another.
So I will compare this soundbar to other products.
Firstly the positives and negatives:
+sound quality
+low latency for gaming
+works great with ARC on my LG CX
-very large sub unit
-no LCD screen
-needs more rubber feet in the middle for narrow shelves
Clearly the positives are all characteristics that matter most. The negatives are just nit-picking.
I should point out that a lot of complaints with soundbars come down to incorrect configuration of devices and TV’s. Not always the users fault though…
E.g. my Sky Q box was set to stereo out of the box, and it was quite a job figuring out how to find the menu option for Dolby Digital, which greatly improves the sound from your soundbar. I recommend setting the sound delay to zero at that point, as you can easily increase it later.
Then you have to set up the TV to pass that Dolby Digital through the ARC HDMI or Optical port. That’s a challenge as my LG OLED has half a dozen settings relating to that! Again you need to set it to passthrough Bitstream/Dolby Digital and reduce the delay to zero initially.
Fortunately this soundbar does tell you when it is successfully receiving Dolby, but due to the lack of an LCD, I had to download the full manual in PDF form, as you only get a Quick Start guide supplied, and it doesn’t tell you how to interpret all the flashing LED lights on the bar!
Once you are outputting Dolby, the sound is excellent (although it also sounds great on basic content like the News or black and white films on daytime TV!). With Dolby especially, it has massive bass, clear voices (even without the clear voice option enabled) and a nice warm fleshed-out sound overall. I tested it out with gaming, and even via ARC, there is no noticeable latency. So no lip sync issues on TV/Movies either.
Yes the sub is pretty huge, and I’ve had smaller subs that produce the same amount of bass. Also the soundbar part only has one rubber foot on each side in the middle. So if putting it on a narrow shelf, it will rock back and forth and settles pointing down slightly. I stuck some little bits of rubber on it to sort that problem, or you could wedge something under the front. It’s really designed for a shelf as wide as the bar, but I don’t have that luxury, and I’m sure many of you are in the same boat. Fortunately having seen one disassembled, I can see that the speakers are wide enough apart that they aren’t blocked by the pillars on my narrow stand.
So for context, I’ve also tried an LG SN4 soundbar. That’s half the price and whilst it is the proverbial “ok for the money”, it definitely sounds half the price of the Yamaha. The bass can boom pretty well, but it’s not a pleasant “boom”, and overall the main bar unit just sounds hollow/tinny and in gaming I couldn’t hear voices as they got lost in the mush during action scenes. If you only have 150 then fair enough, but I strongly recommend stretching to something more expensive.
The other bar I’ve tried was a Polk Magnifi Mini which has suspiciously good reviews from people who received free samples on certain video websites, yet fail to mention obvious issues with it…. That was nice and narrow so could fit on my shelf easier. Although it is taller so might block your TV. The sub is also smaller but produces the same amount of bass. It also has a nice kind of full/warm sound too just like the Yamaha, rather than the hollow sound of the LG. The problem is that it lacked the stereo separation, so it’s side firing speakers weren’t cutting it. Also it had a crippling flaw with the sub that causes a popping sound in some content. The latency via ARC meant that it was useless for gaming and caused lip sync issues on TV/Movies. One could use optical which had lower latency, but then it won’t turn on/off with the TV or control the volume with one remote. That renders it an absolute “do not buy under any circumstances.
So with the Yamaha I finally have the best of everything. The nice warm “full” sound of the Polk, but with better stereo separation/3D audio. Works flawlessly with ARC, has no latency so it’s amazing for gaming, and doesn’t have any sub popping issues or other design flaws of note.
Basically you can stop researching products. This is the product you need. I’ve tried and been disappointed by alternatives, but this thing really does the business across the board, for all uses.
This is an excellent piece of kit and a brilliant sound
I read a lot of reviews and this seems to be the best alexa compatible bang for buck sound bar. The sound quality is great.
Good sound and looks great on wall… son and daughter both decided to buy one too so must have been impressed.
Been using this soundbar for about six months, so far cannot fault it, sound is amazing, different eq modes to suit most tastes, surround sound will never be as good as a 5-1 system, but it’s not far behind. The subwoofer can be toned down or cranked up until it shakes the house !!, but doesn’t distort, just pure bass. The bar itself is excellent ,hear things in films and tv programmes that never have before, also the clear voice mode clarifies the most muffled dialogue. Downloading music through the app, ( Spotify ), and Bluetooth through phone, sounds as good as music systems twice the price. Easy to set up and app works well. If you’re looking for soundbar and subwoofer that delivers even over this price, don’t hesitate. Highly recommend. Love it.
I bought this to complement my 55″ Sony Bravia TV. Initially I thought it was quite good. It wasn’t until I started watching Netflix 5.1 content with the surround sound switched on that I became seriously impressed. It does throw the sound better than you’d expect. Using the surround sound with lower quality sound can sound echoey. I just use it in stereo if it’s too bad. Great bass too. I leave mine on -2 and use the bass extension function when I need more umph. The app is flakey though and frequently disconnects. Best to use the supplied remote. Great value soundbar.
An obvious and clear improvement over the sound from our flat screen TV. Easily installed. Bigger in the flesh than you might expect but not overwhelmingly so. The Alexa component works and is useful.
But….the sub woofer seems to me to be supplying more of the lower range than I would expect and thus is directional – I am always aware of the sound and direction from it. Needed quite a bit of fettling to produce a ‘natural’ sound. Happy and am ‘getting used’ to the sound from it. It is not faulty, produces a good volume but I expected a bit better and a more natural sound having read previous reviews of this and other Yamaha products.
If you like your bass, this is the soundbar, I’m glad that I made this choice, I had samsung hw m650 of which cost a lot of money but it keep cutting out and I will never have Samsung soundbar again as there firmware is useless, this soundbar as got some kick…
Love it….
Excellent sound quality and Alexa works well. Only sound bar that seems to work properly in a room with a very high vaulted ceiling. Easy to set up.
For me the YAS 209 is a great soundbar and excellent value for money. Setting up was easy – just 2 HDMI’s (not supplied). The remote control is not over-complicated and simple to operate. The ‘Clear Voice’ option is particularly helpful to me and the bass can easily be raised or lowered to suit. Very happy with this soundbar.
great sound, really pleased with the sound quality & it’s great to play Amazon music via the built in Alexa.
Yamaha C20 Soundbar – Bluetooth Sound Bar, which sounded pretty good, however i up graded it to, Yamaha YAS-209 Soundbar with Wubwoofer- TV Speaker with Integrated Alexa Voice Control and Wireless Subwoofer its not for music, its more of a weapon!
I really had big expectations from yamaha and did not disappointed me at all. It is very well made and tune. It sounds very well very clean with many options to choose from. 3d surround and clear voice make a big difference. I like it very very much..ohh and then there is Alexa very big plus..good job yamaha!!!
The sound bar was very easy to set up and once we had got sub-woofer set up that was great.
Alexa is proving to be very useful we use it to control the volume etc. when we play music trough the sound bar using Alexa the sound quality is grea
This is the best in class 2.1 channel soundbar in UK. If you are ok to have soundbar without Dolby atmos then go for this model else choose sony ht g700. But believe me this yamaha product is worth every penny. Excellent Bass, Yamaha application for streaming and connecting, the only drawback is the power lights at the top of the soundbar which we will be unable to see. I choose this soundbar for the following reasons:
1. relatively affordable
2. Subwoofer-specific volume control lets you effectively mute the subwoofer if you have someone in the house who is sensitive to the low-base reverberation produced by normal subwoofer operation
3. The soundbar’s ‘clear voice’ feature – which accentuates voice sounds enabling clearer audio dialogue.
Had a couple of issues getting the sound bar to work with some apps on the Sky box. After altering the settings it works fine, great sound with ground shaking bass.
I think for the money it’s okay but suspect during COVID this is probably 50-75 mote than it should be. I mean, it’s okay. I wouldn’t want the sound bar without the subwoofer and the fact the sub is wireless is great. The product looks absolutely fine although is very plastic in nature you don’t really think about it once – in my case – it was Wall mounted. The wall mounting itself is fairly straightforward And basic, just Mount on two screws in the wall. It doesn’t look like it should be secure but so far so good and mounted close enough to the bottom of the TV also hides the wires. Sound wise it’s okay. Clearly better than the tv but doesn’t sound overly premium, but good enough. If the Sonos arc sounded like this I would be very disappointed but I didn’t expect that and so I am satisfied. As I use Amazon prime Alexa is a great addition and works fine. Very useful as is connecting your phone via Bluetooth and using the app which once you get used to it is fine aswell and for me at least was very easy to set up, no hassle at all.
If you are looking for a sound alternative to the twice as expensive Sonos Arc overall I would strongly recommend this. It’s not perfect but I suspect that’s much more to do with the price point and against other products im pretty sure it would hold up very well.
Wow! I didn’t appreciate how poor my Sony TV integrated speakers were until I bought this. What a difference! If I’m honest, I was reluctant to pay this much but I am delighted that I did, the sound quality is superb!
The sound from my TV is much improved with this system. Setting up was a bit hit and miss but it is now working well including control using Alexa
Well worth the money, I usually struggle with heading the words in movies and thanks to this, that problem is solved
I have generally found it difficult to get a sound I like. It either sounds a bit tinny or too spacious. The voice boost mode helps a lot watching movies though. Subwoofer kicks out a lot of bass but it’s not tight if that makes sense. It just seems to overdrive at times and so keeping the bass volume low helps. The setup with eARC was a bit of a pain too as it doesn’t tell you you need HDMI 1.6 (minimum) to support it. I spent a good 40 minutes trying to get it to work without success until I got an HDMI 2.1 cable. No issues since. Overall it’s good for the price I suspect but having been exposed to various studio monitors I perhaps have too high an expectation. The average user will very likely love it so don’t let my review put you off.
Great when I got it working… Would be nice if they supplied an hdmi cable at the price they charge. Also would be great if they stated in the guide that the hdmi cable must be above 1.3 to work with arc. Bought a 2.0 from Amazon that works fine. However when I plugged the hdmi in, with the tv and soundbar off then turned them on, I initially had massive lip sync issues of various degrees for Netflix, prime and Disney +. I messed around with audio delay on my Samsung TV but no good… I nearly gave up and was going to send it back, but turned both off, including power at wall socket, then turned them back on again. This solved the issue perfectly, no lip sync issues at all.
The app install, setting up wifi and connecting Alexa was ok.
It’s hard to know what setting you have turned on even if you go up to the soundbar and check the lights, you need great eyesight, however the best way to tell and control settings is via the app on your phone. That give clear indication of the mode (movie, tv, surround sound etc) plus the overall volume and the subwoofer volume.
The sound is great, goes very loud and the bass can be felt throughout the whole house! Would recommend.
Great Yamaha sound as one would expect – somewhat awkward Alexa confirmation tone that isn’t there on my Sonos/Alexa integrated devices
As a low-mid range Soundbar I wasn’t expecting much but this product is great. Really good quality sound coming from this, you just can’t compare the difference from the TVs speaker and the soundbar. The different sound modes available is pretty cool as well and compliments to what I’m currently watching on th TV from gaming, watching a movie or a tv show.
The built in Alexa is a nice touch to the sound bar and compliments the smart devices we have in the home
Pretty good sound and excellent base, but not as clear or full as the Bose.
Extremely happy with it. There is apparently damage to it as it came as “used” from Amazon but the only damage I could see was on the box it came in!! Brilliant buy at 100 less than new.
Sounds good and is quite loud. The sub performs well too and in all is easy to set up
Excellent system even if we can regret MusicCast. The 3D effect is truly an added value for movies.
Had an issue with an internal speaker but promptly solved by Amazon.
Compared to the standard sound to the TV . 100 percent better. Very good with You Tube and music and all the films on Plex.
It took a little time to join it up to a Samsung Q90T and a Brennan B2. Yamaha were the least helpful of the three manufacturers.
Good value for money from Yamaha, having downsized from full surround, I am still coming to terms with less speakers , especially the rears. However this produces very good sound!!
This has improved the sound from our Sony Bravia TV. There are plenty of settings for different modes (cinema, radio etc.) The Bass woofer really kicks out but the sound bar has enough bass for listening more quietly.
The 3D sound is a bit so-so but I don’t really use it that often as it’s not needed.
Overall I’m very pleased with this and it’s enhanced the viewing experience.
In the 300 price bracket, this system is awesome. I have it set up on a 49′ TV in a room that is 16ft x 12ft. The sound is precise, sharp, detailed, loud if you want it to be & very good quality. The sub packs a punch but in a classy way. Very nice.
Amazing sound from a sound bar. Was thinking of Bose, but delighted with this selection. Alexa is a bit to keen sometimes, but she has a mute, which works well. Music is very room filling with excellent bass from the supplied wireless sub unit. Really pleased!
Amazing sound. Crystal clear for music and films. I was very surprised at the ammount off bass the sub woofer belts out. Makes the floor vibrate. 5 STARS
The Yamaha YAS-209 Sound Bar with subwoofer certainly improves the TV sound especially with subwoofer thumping out bass and action film sounds. I had some difficulty setting it up, but with the help of a phone call through Amazon to Yamaha and a very helpful technician, the difficulty was solved. A matter of putting the sound bar HDMI plug in the correct TV socket. I am know enjoying full surround sound of good quality.
These speakers are worth the money. The quality of the sound is amazing. Also, alexa response is very fast and efficient. I would recommend this product its worth the money.
Great cinematic sound – real depth to the bass. Even at low volume, the sound feels big – which is great when you’ve got a baby that wakes up easily.
Best of all is the clear voice function. Really great feature that has taken the frustration out when watching things a little quieter.
This is a great soundbar if you, like me, spend about 95% of your time watching TV programs where the volume does not need to be turned up to 11. The clear voice functionality helps in this regard. Alexa, again to me, is a nice feature to have as i have several linked IoT devices whereby I can now easily control my heating and lighting. The microphones provide good sensitivity and do not struggle to hear my commands.
For the remaining 5% of the time spent watching TV, this soundbar is surprisingly capable of offering a decent soundstage to bring that smile to your face. It is not the loudest or has the bass that you can feel through your body like some can. However, it provides an ample amount of oomph given that this soundbar is midrange.
The subwoofer is good in my opinion. However, as we spend most of our time with TV programs as opposed to watching movies, it is dialled down. I am glad i did not spend more on a soundbar which i was prepared to do.
Sounds very good most of the time. I’ve watched a film, played on the PS4, played some music from my phone and watched a couple of tv shows so far. The sound is great – especially when playing music. The subwoofer is the difference, you get to hear so much bass that the TV speakers wouldn’t have a chance with. Definitely recommend getting the subwoofer and not just an all in one soundbar! The clear voice also does seems to help make dialog a bit clearer. Would have been great to have a dedicated centre channel though!
If I’m nitpicking, it’s a tad muffled sounding occasionally – I was playing uncharted 2 on the PS4 and for some reason the gun sounds were muffled unless I put on the 3d surround effect. Odd. Maybe I need to play round with the settings a bit more.
For the price, it’s a good buy. Looks very smart in front of the TV too.
Very happy with this. Sound is great and sound bar and sub woofer blend in with other well which you don’t always get with subs. My only gripe is as the bar and sub look great a bit more effort could have been put into design of remote which looks a bit 90s. Also would have been good with google assistant built in as well. Other than that great sound bar and sub for the price
Superb product, there is nothing that will beat the YA209 for the price. Bass is excellent, not too much, but plenty for the ordinary user. Clear voice and 3D surround are also both excellent.
I bought a new 65′ 4K TV and basically wanted to upgrade the sound. I already had the Philips HTL5106 which I had had for quite a few years, It is pants. I hardly ever used it because it was just poor.
Did a bit of research to try and get something decent for my budget and came across the YAS 207 which sounded brilliant, was going to buy and then read about the crossover issues, came across the newer YAS 209 which is basically the same but has improved specs. Now has Alexa (which I’m not too bothered about) but also has improved design, improved subwoofer and bass, also no known crossover issues. I bought it and I am glad I did. I connected it to TV, turned it on and WOW! What a difference. The sound is full, rich and has real depth. The soundstage is excellent. The bass is very, very good with the 3D surround employed. The clear voice function is brilliant. Yes there are better out there but for 300 this is a steal, not got 700 at the moment to get the next best and for the money this is the best bang for your buck. The build quality is excellent, very non descript looking but then I do not want a hundred flashing lights underneath my telly, I want something subtle that blends in. The remote is very basic but does everything that is required. the subwoofer is tall but not too wide. Perfect. The volume is not mega loud as it is only 200w including the sub, but I don’t want loud, I want quality and clarity. This fits the bill. Does manage to shock and hit me round the head with the bass on occasions. It is well worth the money. Buy it.
Mine crashed after a month or so. Sent it back.
but I must say sound quality is very nice. overall.
deep bass, nice full middle range and sounding highs.
must admit that listening to music is the best thing here. tv sound might be strange due to various settings, but you can find your perfect one for each program or movie you are watching.
and if sound quality isn’t good enough don’t blame it on soundbar straight away. look at your sound signal / source at first and check that . because soundbar is sounding real nice.
The YAS-209 won’t give you THX theater surround sound, but you can’t beat it for the price. The external sub gives it a pretty good full range, and it sounds good for TV, movies, and music. The seller delivered it a day sooner than I expected which was also a nice surprise! I’m happy. 🙂
Great sound bar but to connect the phone via Bluetooth i first have to disconnect from it any other phone connected earlie
So I did a lot of research in soundbars as there are literally thousands out there and I didn’t want to spend a fortune and I think I’ve hit the nail on the head.
As for setting up – dead easy.. all you need is an HDMI.. if you don’t have an HDMI handy you can go optical (but I would recommend HDMI for ease of use and sound). Just plug it in VIA HDMI ARC to the TV and to the HDMI ARC port in the bar and you are pretty much good to go, you can use your own telle remote for volume or the Yamaha one which has a few handy features on it. Or which I love most cause we all have our phones on us you can hook the bar up to WiFi it will do a quick update for Alexa features then you can use the Yamaha companion app which works great.. I’ve used Sonos many a time and it’s pretty identical.
Looks – nothing groundbreaking here which I like very simple matte finish on the bar , and the woofer looks very slick with a matte finish and a glossy piano black around the woofer hole. Only thing which would of been a cherry on top is maybe a little LED screen telling you what setting you are on when you are using the remote. But the LED’S or the app will tell you.
Sound – I’m a sound engineer and have used plenty of speakers and bars ..I’ve used the Sonos Bar and I would say its better due to the clear voice mode which is incredible and the fact there is a sub. (I know you can buy a sub separate on the Sonos but it comes in at a hefty price). I find I’m hearing sounds in games and movies I have never heard before it’s truly great . I wasn’t looking for something that will blow my face off I was looking for clarity and that’s what I get. Don’t get me wrong though it can pack a punch. And the 3D surround sound mode does make a slight difference maybe not as amazing as some others but you do notice it for sure. But the most impressive thing is this “clear voice” mode.. I find it amazing. Don’t need to have the volume up loud and I can hear it so clear as if someone is in the room.
Overall – I never thought it would be a Yamaha bar I would purchase as I was looking at Sonos, LG, Sony or Samsung .. but I’m really happy with what I have purchased. Mine came from Peterson’s Online .. great delivery especially during tough times right now with this virus so that was a plus.
Highly recommend.
Thanks
Connected to Sky Q box and 4k tv via hdmi ARC, sound is a massive improvement over the tv speakers.
Alexa is a nice touch and very handy as I have several smart devices which the soundbar can now control.
The subwoofer connected straight out of the box and adds to the atmosphere.
Overall a great bit of kit.
I like it it’s not to thick and it sounds good but the woofer is to big
