This product has been in production for over ten years. It is what it is, and it does what it does well.

I researched this purchase carefully and I got exactly what I needed.

    Great value for money

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve played guitar as a pro and semi-pro for over 40 years and made a number of instrumental recordings using a Zoom H4N. I recently retired from my engineering day job and decided that now is the time to start arranging and recording all the original songs I’ve written over the years. The Zoom R24 was the right tool for the job.

The R24 is small and lightweight but loaded with great features. Having H4N experience helped in learning the interfaces and file structure. It has many useful built in effects like reverb, delay/chorus and compression. It even offers guitar amp modeling although I prefer my own guitar preamps. The a/b repeat and punch-in/out functions work very well.

I have done solo acoustic arrangements as well those with a rhythm section and multiple guitar overdubs. So far, all my recordings sound great and weren’t difficult to make (writing a good song is the critical part). I have received a lot of positive feedback and encouragement from my fellow musicians.

My only concern with the R24 is that the input jacks are very tight. But, they are holding up just fine . So far, I’m very happy with the R24.

Awesome portable recording studio! Works incredibly as an audio interface with my DAW (Cubase in my home recording studio), and great independently for capturing multiple tracks in field sessions, such as tracking drums at my drummer’s house…great quality, a real workhorse! I don’t even need or use half the capabilities it offers (i.e. sampler, some track editing options, mastering, computer read mode, etc.)…and am still blown away, for the price, compactness, light-weight & easy to use nature…I would recommend for home recording studio and bigger too.

Really nice unit. An audio Swiss Army knife. Excellent sound quality, full of features, and has some decent effects. Technically capable of creating fully mastered tracks from start to finish. Many options for exporting audio. Amazing for recording bands. Keep in mind, interface is very 90’s, editing is clunky, so unless you have a ton of time on your hands, and depending on the kind of music you make, expect to record rough ideas on it and finalize in a DAW.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersUn gioiellino, per fattura e funzioni.

The Sound On this Recorder is 100% Clear and Once you get used to the different controls and settings such as the EQ, Compression, Built In Patches and The Different Mastering effects, Iam saying comparing to the Tascam Dp 24, this leaves that Miles Behind. I would had appreciated The Usb Stick with the drum effects, But The Looping effects and sampling Its absolutely amazing and I took a Big Gamble on Buying this Studio as Ive always had Tascam. The Only criticisms Ive got are Only 2 which are quite small and they are, you cant assign the Vocal Tracks for Example, If You have youre Mic Plugged into Tracks 3&4 and want to assign the vocal tracks to Track 5&6 or 7&8 etc etc you have to Move the Mic Into the Next track, The Tascam DP 24 allows you to assign youre vocal Tracks Which for Example could be Tracks 3&4 to all of the other tracks, well you cant do that with the R24, you have to Move the Mic xlr connection to every track that you want to use. Criticism No 2 Is The Cuebase software that comes with this Recorder is a Nightmare to Download to youre Pc or Laptop Or whatever… Its a Massive 16 Gb to download. But Then again This computer that Ive got Is On Its way Out anyway, so I`m saying Its the computer rather than the software thats at Fault. Make sure That You dont Clip The recordings either, Because It does have an Dramatic effect On the recording Itself. But Its all down to Trial and Error and Its not one of the easiest of Studios to Use, But Once you get Into it, It then becomes easier. The Manuals are quite easy to Understand and follow and theres Plenty of Videos on you tube to watch On This Zoom R24. Ive had Mine for about 4 weeks now and it was the Best Decision Ive ever made in Buying it *** What I said about you cannott assign Tracks To the same Tracks Is Not strictly true actually, for example, If You Have Youre vocal Tracks On 3&4, what you can do without Disconnecting The Mic to Put It Into The Next Tracks which would be 5&6, what You need to do Is Set Up The Other Vocal Tracks On 11 & 12. I`m going to experiment with it tonight…. The reason why Its 11 & 12 is because they are the same tracks as 3&4, Hope this is understandable as to what Iam Trying to say****. Ive Just been thinking about it as I`m standing In My Kitchen having My Morning coffee. You would have to set up the EQ and Compression On 11&12, But you wont have to disconnect the Mics.. As I say I`ll experiment On the next Recording..

Great Product and amazing value. I read up on interfaces and this is great, it’s a mixer and the flash download facility is so useful to mix on iMac. Mine came with Cubase too!! Not listened to drum sounds on flash stick yet but metronome and drum machines are fine for my needs at the moment.
I can also take it to my gigs and record ourselves quickly with the 2 built in condenser mic’s or come out of main gig pa each instrument and vocal into R24 to download raw data onto iMac.
One criticism, I’d like XLR speaker outputs either as well as, or instead of phono Jack’s.
But, at this price it’s amazing value for money.
Now, 2 weeks later and my R24 is fantastic. 100% recommended.

The small package packs a bunch great features and i’ve been using for everything from new recording and an audio interface for live DJing on the internet. for $500.00 it’s a steal… endless effects onboard, and with 24 recording tracks…. no excuses

My biggest fear when recording is to lose it all if it gets unplugged, this saves when disconnected but better yet, pop in some AA batteries and never worry about it again. Extremely light weight as well. Mixdown and mastering is easy as pie. Another great thing about it is that you can program auto punch in and punch out!
Everytime I use it I come across more bonus features that makes it easier for me.
Along with this I bought the DVD tutorials which really does help, a 32 GB sim which is way too much space lol, and a cheap condenser mic for about $20 that sounds perfect. Very pleased with

I just bought this to replace my much loved Fostex V160 which has developed niggly problems making it unreliable.

I tossed up at length between this and the Tascam DP-32SD, and eventually decided on the Zoom R24 because it was smaller and lighter and the reviews seemed good. I also read about a few issues with the Tascam, which may have been resolved, I don’t know.

On unboxing the Zoom, I had a very cursory scan of the manual and then had a go at recording with the internal microphones. I am a classical musician and very critical of sound. The quality from these microphones is really very good, and it will be interesting to see how much different the sound is when I connect my two good microphones via XLR inputs.
The unit is attractive, well thought out and very easy to use, and many operations are pretty much identical to my Fostex, so to me it feels fairly intuitive. The manual is less than half the size of the Fostex one and easy to navigate, though anyone who has never before explored recording with a multi-track machine may have a bit of a learning curve to start with. It is honestly not all that difficult to master. File transfer onto a flash drive and then into Audacity on the computer is easy.

I am pleased with my purchase thus far, let’s hope it lasts as long as the Fostex.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe Zoom R24 has an amazing amount of features which are offered for a very reasonable price. The R24 has been available for several years and it seems most of the initial bugs it had, like any product has, have been eliminated. I have had no problem using several brands of media for recording on the R24. I have used different models of Sans Disk and PNY and all of them have recorded without a problem. One of the biggest selling points for the R24 is its portability. You can take it anywhere with you which is an enormous benefit. Of course, there are always compromises and work arounds to be made but there is an abundant amount of videos on Youtube to help you get going and guide you into advanced recording possibilities. I have only had the R24 for a short amount of time but, if it keeps working, I am very happy I bought it. Lightweight, nice looking, good recording quality and dozens of features make the R24 a very attractive option for your recording needs. Thumbs up for Zoom and the R24. I have no opinion on Zoom support because I have not had to contact them.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI bought the Zoom R24 in October as a retirement project to keep me out of trouble. At first glance it looks complicated, but with the help of YouTube tutorials (which are excellent by the way and explain every aspect you will need to know) i have managed to record my first full track. With a bit practice the functions are easy to master and the menu’s now make perfect sense. I must say the sound quality is superb and cannot fault the machine in any way. I’m now looking forward to many years of uncomplicated recording. Absolutely recommended.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersIf you are considering the Zoom R24….do not hesitate one second. I have had a Zoom HD16 for years, an incredible machine that continues to function perfectly after thousands of projects. But I decided to upgrade to the R24 and it’s even better, faster, and has more of everything. Plus several new features….built in condenser mics, a sampler, a USB drive with files of rhythm tracks, and an SD card to name a few. I spent the first week with it recording an acoustic guitar singer/player.
Recording an acoustic guitar is, in my view, the ultimate test, and the R24 killed it I am extremely pleased with the R24 and I highly recommend getting one.

Brilliant and very well priced piece of kit which I use to quickly capture jam sessions. I wouldn’t use it to create an album, but I’m sure you could. It has some limitations, and it has some features I will probably never use (like the drum machine and on board effects). Sound quality is generally good. I mostly use it as an easy capture device with six microphones (2 vox, 2 gtr, 2 drums) and stereo keyboard mixer into channels 7/8. Although it records up to 24 tracks using overdubs, I only ever use it for 8 tracks as that is the max it will record simultaneously. For my purposes (I have a complete other studio for serious recording), this is great. I will be taking it away with me for song-writing in transit as well.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThere was a time, back in the early 1980’s, when I used a Fostex X15 which recorded on four tracks cassette tape. Oh how I wish I could have had a machine like the Zoom R24 back then.

There is a learning curve to using this mixer/recorder – but, once you understand what’s going on under the hood, it’s well thought out and logical. There’s some excellent tutorials on YouTube if you need help.

Just for fun, I recorded a track with my grandson. For the backing I created a drum track using Magix Music Maker 2016 and transferred it to the R24. Then my grandson made two tracks, a lead track and a rhythm track, using his acoustic guitar. The final mix was all done on the R24. Using some scenic photographs, I had taken around the State of Vermont over the years, I made this video to complement the music.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is being used by one of my musician friends who uses it for his own efforts and our combined efforts when we meet from time to time. In discussion with him, he is extremely happy with it – the effects, the ease of use and most importantly the results! He has only one complaint – apparently, once you plug something into one of the jack sockets it is extremely difficult to get it out again. His workaraound is to get adaptors which remain permanently plugged in and he plugs into those. Problem solved but a stupid design fault methinks.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI started with an R8 learnt how to use that, as I am not especially technically minded, then progressed to the R24. I write and record songs for gospel choir and the Zoom R24 has been ideal. I use the drum tracks then put keyboards, bass and guitar in myself. When I was buying this I couldn’t see a review that talked about multiple vocal parts but I have had pretty good success recording and mixing harmonies. I’m still learning how to use the Zoom R24 but considering my husband had bought me a Tascam 8 line years ago and it’s sitting in my studio with 2 songs recorded on it because it was so hard to use, the Zoom R24 is a delight in comparison. So to sum up, if like me you’re not a technical wiz but want to record, the Zoom is just the thing. Easy to use but get a good studio mic if you’re recording vocals. I haven’t used the inbuilt mics on the R24 but used them all the time on the R8 and they’re good too. But as I’m recording to make cd’s I have a studio mic. Anyway would definitely recommend the Zoom R24.

With this you write your songs to SD card, then take it out and insert in PC and my Windows 10 64 bit laptop had no problem with playing the files. Buy, enjoy and find happiness. Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersGreat multi-track recorder. Very little menu-diving, only when starting and naming a new song, and when selecting effects for tracks, most everything else is available right from front panel. You can link paired tracks together if you do everything in stereo, that is what I do. It runs on batteries and has built-in mics, so it makes a nice portable laptop-size recorder. It has USB/audio interface, but I don’t use that because you can just put the SD card into your PC to get all the audio files. It has sample pads, but I don’t use that either cause I have a sampler. I like that it is a small recorder, audio goes right to SD with no conversion required, records 4 stereo tracks at a time, and plays back 12 stereo tracks at a time. The level meters are right there, the knobs/sliders are smooth. You can even plug in 1/4″ line, or XLR mic, or guitar, or phantom powered condenser, or use internal stereo mics. The only thing it is missing is midi ports with midi clock sync, so you could sync it up with a sequencer and other gear, but that does not lower my rating cause I knew that in advance – if Zoom ever came out with a version with midi, I would upgrade.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersSo far I’ve used the R24 primarily to record my band live at practices and when we play out, so I haven’t used many of the features. That said, I find the sound quality very good and it’s very compact and convenient to use. I’ve not tried to tie it directly into software (I use Logic Express) – it’s easy enough to read the SDCard, copy the audio files straight into the programs once I get to that point.

    1) Recording:
    ——————

Using the 8 track mode is straightforward pretty much out of the box for anyone who’s had any multitrack recording experience. The input jacks are combined XLR and 1/4″ Phone and are (at least in my system) a tight fit for connecting/ disconnecting cables. I use a series of splitters (XLR and/ or 1/4″ Y splitters) so that instruments/ vocals can be sent to the R24 and the mixing board/ PA. So far this has worked well. If you want to record directly from a guitar/ bass, there’s a Hi Z switch on Track/ Input 1 (only). There are phantom power options on other channels.

In addition to direct inputs, the built-in condenser mics also work surprisingly well for live recording (but obviously without the ability to change the mix beyond the 2 channels.

I’ve used it with rechargeable batteries (NiMH) and they’ve lasted about 1.5 sets (so a bit over 1 hour of recording on 6 tracks).

    2. Playback.
    ————–

There are several ways to get decent output. The ones I’ve tried so far are:

    1) Mix from the board through the stereo line-out or phones output jacks – great for rough takes.
    2) Copy the audio files from the SD Card to a computer and import them into editing software (e.g. Audacity or Logic Express).

When playing back, the use of effects is more confusing that IMO it needs to be as there are different types of effects that can be applied to each channel and/ or input with some limitations that are confusing). IMO, this highlights what for me is the biggest liability: the manual. Fortunately there are some great YouTube tutorials that go in to excellent detail on a variety of functions. My favorite is by topdazzle, who explained in less than a minute what the R24 manual couldn’t (at least to me) in multiple pages WRT the use of send-return (rather than insert) effects. These tutorials might also give a good intro for those considering buying one.

IMO an excellent piece of kit, though with its plastic casing, be careful not to abuse it.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersHaving used this device now for all manner of things, I totally love it. I am in a 5-piece rock band (Grounds for Divorce) and we use this for multi-track recording of rehearsals and gigs – you can plug directly into it with your instruments via either standard XLR or 1/4″ (although only input 1 has a hi-z switch for direct connection of electric guitars and basses – for other inputs you will need to DI or mic a cab). I also use it with one mic and an acoustic guitar for solo stuff. In-built drum machine, sampler and sequencer round out the package and the quality of the recordings is really first class. While this device will allow for simultaneous playback of 24 tracks, you can only record 8 at a time, normally plenty for what we do. You can also take a direct feed to the recorder from your FOH desk using a multi-core 1/4′ snake and this also works really well. Phantom power on up to 6 channels (even on batteries) and with selectable voltage – great for condenser mice. In-built effects and processors (overdrives, amp sims, compressors, noise reduction, reverbs, chorus, delay, etc.). Great as a scratch pad for new song ideas, orchestras – anything you like where you need great quality multi-track digital recordings. Jeez – it even has a pair of built-in stereo electret mics!!! Mix-down and master directly on the unit itself with no need for a computer or DAW if you want to keep it simple. Takes a standard SD memory card but use at least a Class 4 so it is quick enough to cope. USB support for dumping your entire rehearsal or gig directly onto a memory stick (in multi-track) for immediate sharing with bandmates, etc. If you’re struggling with the manual and the learning curve then check out my series of YouTube video tutorials here: […]

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI’ve been using the R24 for over a year. It does a great job. I use mine for remote recording of live event. It sounds great. It’s completely reliable. I like that it records to SSD cards. No moving parts and I can pop it out and into my Mac to transfer recordings. It runs on AA batteries. With phantom power running a stereo pair of mics, I can record for over 2 hours on battery power. This is great, because I don’t need to worry about AC power fluctuations. I could have gotten by with the R16 in my application, but bought the 24 for extra flexibility since it’s not much more money.

The only CONS for me with this device – I bought it hoping to use it as a control surface in my recording studio. It’s not as usable in that role as I had hoped. The only other thing I don’t like is the track level meters. They could use a few more segments. It’s difficult to tell when you’re really clipping. I also wish there was a peak hold option.

For the money, you can’t beat this device for sound quality and portability.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersReading some of the reviews for this (and similar products), it would seem that I am one among many who are returning to recording music after a long layoff. The last time I did it was in the days of tape – and the alternative was either rather crude recording at home, or expensive time in a pro studio.

Now, with products like this, you can do pretty impressive multitrack recording at home, for a very reasonable price.

I’ve only just received my R24, so I’m still at the beginning of a steep learning curve – it’s packed with sophisticated features, that are clearly going to take me months to master. But that’s good!

I have to say that – given the complexity of the unit – the manual is VERY basic. I would strongly recommend purchasing one of the excellent video tuition courses from http://proaudiodvds.com/ – there are some taster lessons on YouTube. The R24 tutorial will set you back about twenty quid, and although I’m normally sceptical about such things, it’s actually well worth it. You get over 2 hours of solid examples that show you how to use the recorder in detail. They should really bundle the DVD version of this with the R24, in my opinion.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI purchased the R24 because I kept experiencing latency issues during PC recording.
I also found PC recording time consuming, so I was looking for a tool to speed up the demo recording process.
    The R24 exceeded my expectations.

24 tracks, excellent effects, mastering, built in drum machine, 4gb drum samples, built in condenser, pre amp, tuner, timestretch, usb to PC and cubase LE make this excellent value for money.
Also acts as a control surface in Cubase(and other DAW).

It took me around 20 mins to get going with the R24. The manuals are ok, but there is so much packed into the R24 you will be referring back to the manuals quite a bit to start with.

    Pluses
Zero latency and the sound quality is everything I hoped for
    Speeded up my recording process
    Bargain price

    Negatives
Programming the built in drum machine is a bit of a pain. You need to make use of the R24’s sequencer and copy patterns onto seperate tracks to start with. There are a couple of good tutorials on you tube showing how to do this.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersVery pleased, this replaced my Zoom MRS1266 and I found this much easier to use and gave me an excellent production on my first attempt. I have not yet used it as an interface, but I’m very happy with its ease of use as a stand alone unit.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis recorder almost didn’t happen for me, but once I sent a faulty one back and received a replacement (thanks Amazon, you did a great job!), everything worked great! The first recorder, which turned out to have some electrical problems affecting the right electret mic, as well as XLR connectors 5-8/13-16/21-24, seemed pretty good at first until I went to record some drums with XLR mics and discovered that the 4 right XLR connectors gave nothing but a buzzing sound. After digging around online a bit, I determined that it wasn’t an oversight on my part about its functionality and promptly returned the faulty unit for a replacement. After the replacement arrived, I immediately tested all line-inputs, XLR inputs, L & R built-in mics, and all 6 phantom power connections. With this one, everything worked great. The only thing to do was flash the firmware from 1.00 (which is what the replacement unit had) up to 1.12. I believe the original unit came with 1.10. The instructions on the Zoom website made this real easy. This fixes an issue where tracks get filled with noise if they’re restarted after being paused, at least from what I’ve read online. So far, with several songs I’ve recorded in the last 3 weeks, there appears to be no problem with the audio disappearing into noise under v1.12.

I do wish that the effects worked with the 48kHz sample rate (not that they’re supposed to – the unit is only advertised for effects to work with 44kHz sample rate), but they work pretty descently under 24-bit/44.1 sample rate. All tracks do have panning ability in the menu, whether you run them as separate mono tracks or as linked stereo tracks. As I’ve read in other reviews, there is some static when the gain controls are turned almost all the way up, but it doesn’t keep crackling, it only makes that sound when turning the knob into the top of the range. Other than that, it doesn’t affect (or hasn’t so far) any recordings I’ve made (no related noise in the recordings, in other words). I also tried putting all gain knobs and volume sliders at their topmost positions when checking the replacement unit. On the original unit, there was some crazy buzzing that never fully went away. With the replacement unit, I can certainly hear the noise floor with that appraoch, but there’s no abhorant buzzing – thankfully, that appears ok.

All recordings I’ve tried so far have involved a full 8 tracks at one time, plus some external preamps, but some have only made use of the onboard preamps. The onboard ones sound descent for the most part (unsure about nature recording yet, but I suspect too noisy for nature use). Sound quality for live music is great, of course, because volume levels are quite high and I tend to run everything in through the line-in jacks: 2 jacks were just XLR mics, 2 used a battery-powered stereo mic to capture audience sounds, and 4 were line-in from peavy amps. Worked great for the volume levels I tried it in (meaning somewhat loud levels, roughly 100-110 dB A-weighted (had to use ear plugs on my part, but I just prefer protecting my hearing). Anyhow, it worked great in the live situation; and, for recording in-house (not live), it also worked really great. I do rough mixes in the Zoom R24, but prefer to dump all tracks into my prefered DAW software (Samplitude, Audacity, Adobe Premier, etc.) to do the actual mixing. Until something like this supports plug-ins (highly unlikely given the lower price range), it’ll have to be an audio-collection tool only for me. That’s just my requirements, though. Others may find it okay for their mixing requirements, though, and for smaller mixes, I would likely use it to mix down songs more easily.

Each track does have a menu-based, 3-band eq… bass and treble have either dippable EQ’s or roll-off EQ’s. The midrange is parametric and allows you to set a fairly wide midrange frequency area – frequencies are preset, but cover a lot of the main harmonics used, and all with variable width (Q). I think the farthest it lets you cut or boost the midrange is +/-12 dB. Not the most dramatic amount, but it’s descent. I’m not sure on how sharp the bass/treble roll-off filters are. They sound like they’re in the range of 9-18 dB possibly, but that’s just my halfway guess.

Also, each track has a send/return setting for reverb and chorus. These work pretty descent. Lots of different types of reverb and chorus to choose from, and both can be used together per track. I wish the compression was a little more accomodating, but I think I may just need to explore that further before declaring that it’s not as useful for me.

Overall, a great unit for live recording and group recordings (meaning, not in live environments). I haven’t tried recording on batteries yet, but look forward to it. I’m not sure the noise floor would work for the super-quiet levels needed for field recording, as I also use a Marantz PMD661 for field recording (which is a good bit quieter), but I expect I’ll be trying that out soon (may even try a Blumlein array with 4 mics for fun!). In my estimation & experience so far, a very descent, solid unit.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI got the R24 for recording a podcast, and it’s great except one important aspect. It has the perfect number of inputs, allowing for 4 XLR mics and two stereo computers as input, great for my 2-person and up to two guest podcast. However, although it records each track individually, it does not record the master mix at the same time. I would like to get all the tracks PLUS the master mix (which incorporates live fader adjustments). Instead, to do this, you must do at least 2 recording passes, once for the tracks and once for the master mix.

This is less than ideal, so I end up recording on a second device to get a live master mix.

Other than that, it’s a great device. Single-pass recording of both the individual tracks and the master mix would make it a 5-star device.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersThis is an excellent recorder with plenty of functions and features to keep any virtuoso occupied. Most importantly, the condenser speakers on the unit are impeccable. Coping very well with everything I throw at them(drums, piano, guitar etc). The only issue I have with this product is that it is quite complicated. As with all multi-track recorders it takes some getting used to. Overall, I’m very pleased with this but for me, it’s the condenser mics that make this product, it’s portability is something I have yet to test but that will be my next move.

Golden Review Award: 35 From Our UsersWell, the title says a lot. I liked the first one so much, I bought another. My focus on this recorder is just that – to record. I have no plans to mix on this machine, so my review does not pertain to the many mixer or effects featues. (Although from other reviews I have read, they are great). It does an excellent job of recording.

    Pros
    Lightweight – very portable.
    Uses batteries or adapter.
Manual is very well written by someone with an excellent command of the English language.
    Excellent value.

    Cons
No MIDI whatsoever that I could figure out. One review I had read, hinted that it has some type of MIDI capabilities, but I couldn’t find any. This is unimportant to me, but to some, it may be.
Only 1 dedicated direct input for guitar. It would be nice to have at least 2, but of course you can record by microphone up to 7 more.
