This is a fairly easy tester to use and it works well testing the integrity of Ethernet cables connections. However, I wasn’t aware there is a different model with a PoE port for testing so if there is any chance you’ll need that, I’d suggest purchasing that model.

Overall construction does not seem very sturdy, but I am only using this at home for validating connections in cables that I have terminated, so I think it’s solid for a casual user like me.

This tool has so many features to test cable runs which is mostly what I use it for. For the money it’s well worth it. You can save time and money by verifying whether that run is good or no

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf you are serious about your work, this is a very good tool. I’d recommend getting a pouch or a bag to keep it safe and expand its longevity but it is pretty device rugged already. The tracing feature is so useful to fix lazy installers messes. The coax testing is very useful too. You might want to get the appropriate adapters if you are going to test BNC cables or connections and not just Ftype connections.
Very reliable product from Klein tools as always.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersOriginally, I was thinking about buying the Klein VDV526-200, but after using the VDV501-851, I think I made the better choice.

I have wanted to rerun several Cat5e cables in the house for some time. The original runs were sloppily done, nothing was labeled, and it always bothered me. Thanks to the VDV501-851, it was easy to identify which run was which using the remote plugs that come with the kit.

In the process of redoing everything, I found several issues with with patch cables I had done myself and found at least 1 pre-fabricated patch cable was also bad. None of that would have been possible without a proper cable tester.

The only thing that bothers me about this tester is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to put it into loop mode by default. When you use network mode, you have to manually hold down the network button for a couple of seconds to make the unit continuously poll the cable. While I haven’t tried the coax or phone modes, I suspect it’s the same.

I’m now contemplating reworking several phone and coax runs in the house. I have no doubt the VDV501-851 will make those jobs so much easier.

I’ve use the Fluke Microscanners which are vastly over priced in my humble opinion. The Klein has the features I need but doesn’t certify data runs. For mapping and basic testing, it’s completely more than adequate. Decent quality and easy to use. At 1/10th the price for 9/10th the functionality, just a great buy.

Good bit of kit – works well.
It’s worth noting that the basic yellow ID plugs included in this kit can only be used for identifying cables. You need to use the unit in the bottom of the base for continuity testing (and for length testing on the 3/6 pair). Otherwise good.
Have docked them a point for shipping it in a nasty blister pack, though.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersFor the first time in 25 years, I had to bring up an already wired network in an existing building. Wire pulling would be too expensive, we had to use the existing 16 year old Cat5, which had never been connected at the network closet.

This tool made it simple — almost trivial.

Put the remote plugs in candidate sockets; wire keystones on candidate cable runs at the network closet; plug a cable into each keystone and find out which remote socket I’m talking to; repeat 17 times.

What I’d spec’d as 2-3 full days took less than an afternoon.

It’s been years since I’d pulled wire or pushed down connections. I was ready for a long frustrating job, and this tool made it almost fun.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe UI isn’t particularly intuitive, but overall it’s simple enough that you can memorise its quirks. It seems to work quite reliably and was instrumental in pinning down a faulty crimper as the source of my woes.

Note that the length estimation is not all that accurate, since it relies on measuring capacitance rather than e.g. travel time of a test signal. So 10% at least – you’ll often see it give very different numbers for different pairs in the same cable. The manual does note that it’s inaccurate.

Also, the display never shows decimals so if you switch it to metric (metres instead of feet) you loose a lot of precision. I ultimately just left it on feet and do the conversion manually.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBuilding a home and opted to terminate my CAT6A runs myself instead of electricians that have no clue… And good thing I did because they did some absolutely terrible runs with my provided wire. So I can’t even imagine what they would have done with my terminations. But anyways needed a cable tested and a means to make tracing my runs easier being that they didn’t label any of the runs.

This testing tool was able to give me accurate test on the runs. Out of the 24 runs one of them was pinched and defective. After terminating it and testing I was able to find this out before they filled in the walls. And the five identifiers was just godly. I wish I had gotten the bigger set of them but the 5 alone made me tracing my runs so much faster. Instead of tracing one at a time.

My cheap no name tester finally died, I wanted to get something that was a little better. I always like Klein tools, so I saw a bunch and finally decided on this. The tester works great and feels solid. The battery that came with mine was dead, not Klein’s fault.

This kit is great! Tester is super easy to use, The remote locators are SUPER helpful and can save a lot of time if you need to trace multiple runs at once. The only feature that I had trouble with occasionally is the hub link feature, but you won’t likely use that very often anyway.

The only real issue I have with this kit (as well as the VDV501-853 kit) is that it doesn’t include a toner probe. There are valid reasons for toning out runs instead of using the remotes. The tester even has a tone generator, so having to buy the probe separately is just annoying.

Aside from the lack of a probe, this is an essential kit for any IT professional (especially if Fluke tools are outside your budget).

I bought this when I moved into my new construction house in order to easily test, map, and tag all of the Ethernet and Coax jacks installed around my home. My builders were supposed to tag every run when wiring the house but they didn’t. Without this tool it would have taken me hours to map and test every jack around the house. Instead I had the whole process done in under 20 minutes.

I used this to figure out which wires in the attic were connected to which network jacks in the house. Couldn’t be more simple. I put the numbered remote plugs into the jacks, then when I’d plug a wire into the meter, it would show the number of the plug. Saved a lot of time.

I’ve been having intermittent Ethernet issues for a couple years. Sometimes multiple times in a day, sometimes not for a couple weeks.

This would cause my fire cube to lose connection. I’d have to unplug it from the router and re-plug.

I have my modem and network switch upstairs and fire cube downstairs (with another switch… For other stuff). The house was pre wired with Ethernet.

I contemplated calling a professional to determine the issue. I’ve replaced the cables to the wall… Even the switches.

After buying this and watching a few videos it quickly showed that the length of the wires was 123 feet… But two wires were only 65 feet. I guesstimated the distance in my attic and found a junction I didn’t know existed. I rewired the connection with proper RJ45… And it’s been perfect for a few months now.

This is a significant upgrade to the VDV501-823 unit. The backlight is awesome and a much-needed feature. The fact that it measures distance is a HUGE plus… saves a lot of money not having to purchase a Fluke meter for that reason. My only complaint, and the reason it has 4 stars instead of 5 – the previous unit had an awesome feature where it would constantly perform the network test as soon as you pressed the button. If you disconnected or reconnected the ends of your cable to test, the results on the screen would update in real time. On this one, you have to re-press the network test button to see results again. Not ideal for when you’re working with a possible faulty termination that sometimes passes or fails based on a little wiggle. But willing to deal with it for all of the features added since the older model.

I’ve used Fluke tools in the past, but wanted an ethernet test and toner kit of my own. At first I thought this tool was not working as expected when I tested here at home and could not identify the Remote IDs, cable length, or pinout. Come to find out, the cabling in my new apartment was abysmal with crossover pinouts all over the place with a mix of A and B, and a couple jacks were not properly punched down with all wire pairs. Luckily my network equipment had auto-mdix and solved this for me, making me think everything was properly wired. I went through the whole house and punched everything back down on my own, and now everything is showing as properly pinned with cable length detected, and I can identify the Remote ID at the end.

Oh, and when you tone, I didnt realize the default is to tone a single wire. Set it to all for a better toning of a patch panel.

Great tool! I love the detachable remote troubleshooting termination detector. Without this tool, I re-crimped far to many RJ45 terminations without much success. To see, on an LED screen, exactly (number for number) how a patch cord has been terminated from one end to the other, beautiful. One note, the smaller remote jack identification locators only give ID information back to the hand held unit, no other improper or properly wired details. However, if you’ve ever been in front of a home-run panel full of coax, cat5, and phone cable, this end of the deal is a hair saver. Says Klein on it and cost $90, did not know that was possible. Try that with Fluke. I own 4 different Fluke products, nearly bulletproof. I’ve dropped them, think I’ve fried them, left them on and put them back in my toolbox only to find the battery just fine after months. Honestly, Fluke is in a different league and I’m not an IT person, so, for the money this little Klein is just fine.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis kit does exactly what I needed, it tells me what the network map actually is. I am helping out some public libraries with little to no budgets for this type of work, so I volunteered to pick up the tools and put in some time. The large number of remote ID plugs makes the process much simpler than using some simpler tools like a “toner” that you have to go one wall LAN port at a time. In a multi-floor building with about 50 LAN ports, that takes quite a bit of effort. Using the 18 plugs, plus the included map+test “dongle” gives me 19 points to map before I need to move them to another set of LAN ports. The mapping plugs simply tell you what numbered plug you are looking at from the LAN cable at the network switch end, while the map+test can tell you if the conductors are good or have a problem (cross wired or broken/open). I like it and recommend this along with the available toner and perhaps an additional set of map+test dongles so more than one “iffy” lines can be checked in one setting. Note that if you buy the map+test kit that starts at #7 and goes to #12 (VDV770-851) it is somehow about $30 less than the kit VDV770-850 that contains one less dongle and are numbers 2 through 6. A single dongle sells for about $24 and you are able to order any ID code you like. That makes my mapping plug and dongle count up to 25, which is approximately half of the entire building.

If you have all good connections, then the single included map+test dongle should be adequate as those have extra features used for suspect wiring. I also bought the Klein VDV500-123 tracing probe tone tool (about $40) as the wire bundles are quite confusing in the LAN room and it helps find the correct line quickly.

Do you need something like this for your home? Nope. But if you are looking at a building network that contains many LAN outlets, your time has value… Simple math can tell you if you feel this is worth it. In my case, I am older, have creaky knees, and get impatient when I am forced to do things the hard way; so for me as I help the libraries in my area, I find this equipment to be incredibly valuable!!! Basically it pays for itself in the first library with approximately 50 LAN ports spread out over 4 levels (remember the creaky knees?).
    🙂

Excellent piece of kit and a very good price.

The feature set on the scout pro 3 is very good as it encompasses a cable tester, cable toner, cable length guide, and also tests cable for rj11 and coax.

Having the ability to run cable length tests on each cable pair is very handy as this will give an idea where the fault lies if the cable tester reports a fault on a particular conductor. Having the ability to tone from this device as well (paired with the klein probe) is a very good feature as it means you don’t have to carry lots of different testers in your tool bag.

One other great feature is the HUB blink option. When plugged into a wall port that is plugged into a switch, the HUB blink mode will slowly flash the link light to identify where the other end of the cable is connected.

Overall this has a large number of features that mean you only need to carry one tool in your bag to fault find or verify cables. Thaddeus benefit of a back-light also means you can read the results in low light conditions where ever you may be.

As a contractor this is amazing. I’m currently using it right now on a job site to test the cables we ran and crimped. Hasn’t disappointed me not one bit.

  36. Anonymous says:

Everything works great. Remote cable finders are great if you’re looking for multiple cables at once. My main issue is that while it’s also a tone generator, it doesn’t include a probe. Not even the biggest kit includes one (even though the case has a slot for one), which means you have to buy it separately for $40!

It took a little bit of practice to figure out how to use since the display is a little unintuitive, but was able to eventually figure it out.

The Scout Pro 3 is great, But please bundle it with a probe!

  37. Lauren Ward says:

This is easy to use and understand the readings. It comes with everything I needed to test my network cables both where the ends were close by and where one of the ends were remote. The lite up screen really helps as I ended up troubleshooting in the dark. It even helped me identify a cable that I thought was good but ended up showing that one pair of wires did not have a good connection in the cat 8 plug although it looked like it did from a visual inspection.

  38. Anonymous says:

The toner function didn’t seem to work with the companion Klein Tools VDV500-123 toner probe, and I followed the instructions. With a cable from my Ethernet switch plugged into the top RJ45 port, pressing the toner button on the Scout 3 starts the toner function on wire#1, and the probe immediately starts sounding anywhere in the vicinity of the Scout 3, no matter where it is pointing. placing the probe tip next to the correct wire on the switch just results in some 60hz hum. Cycling through each wire on the Scout 3 is the same, then going through the wire pairs starting with 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, all pairs, the probe alarm cuts off and pressing the probe tip against the cable results in the same 60hz hum, that’s all, no tone. If I can’t get this to work on the bench, it’s not going to work on the field. This is one of the reasons I spent a premium on this tool, there are cheaper toners out there but I wanted a quality tool that would work. Either I am doing something completely wrong, or if the Scout 3 and/or the Toner Probe is at fault, and I hate to return a tool that is working.
The other RJ-45 test functions seems to work OK.
Responding to another reviewer complaining about the battery not fitting, you have to rotate the battery 180 degrees so that the battery wire is not preventing the battery from seating properly in the battery compartment.

It’s a good tool to have if you regularly work with networking equipment. I do IP camera installs and I like to use this tool because it gives me an accurate reading on my cable runs. The only dislike is that you have to manually start each cable test by pressing the appropriate button. Other more expensive models will run the test as soon as the cable is connected. This is super minor in my opinion. Once you realize it, you’ll just get in the habit of starting the test manually. Like I said in the headline, it’s a whole lot cheaper than the Fluke Microscanner model which is around $600.

As others have noted, the battery door doesn’t close with a battery in there (even the battery that comes with the unit). You can tape it over or something but it’s just a gross design flaw.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersThe tester is a decent starter package for ethernet cable work but doesn’t run from the box without jumper cables (shielded best but un-shielded will allow wire testing), if you’re using this, you probably have some short patch leads. The 5 included LAN map ID plugs helped identify the connected ports at the patch panel, but these don’t work with the wire test function, for which just one Test-N-Map module is included (the self store item), using just 1 of these meant lots of return trips to swap between outlets and patch panel. Additional kit of 5 costs over 100! Consider which kit to purchase if you want to use 6 modules simultaneously.

Build/design.. Not a bad feel initially, but as another reviewer mentioned, the battery compartment is not deep enough. The only way the battery can be fitted causes it to press against the battery power lead when the cover is replaced.

Cable test… I purchased this and the cable tracer probe to help identify and locate a fault in an ethernet Cat 6a shielded S/ftp cable which wasn’t resolved by reworking connections at each end. The cable test function quickly confirmed an open circuit in a line pair.

Tone Generator/Cable Tracing… Unfortunately, the tester tone generator and additional probe couldn’t work to trace and locate the fault through the shielded cable or to identify the cable in a bundle! The signal was being attenuated by the shielding.
The tester allows selection over which wires to send the test signal, none of the options produce a traceable signal along the outer insulation of shielded wire. Perhaps for cable identifying, users could modify a jumper lead to connect the shield as if it was a signal wire (only for tracing cables). I’ll try this later. Most of what I use is shielded, if a modified jumper lead doesn’t work, it isn’t suitable for the purpose and I’ll return the probe.

Line length… By default the tester was set to imperial units, measuring cable lines in feet, it can be set to metres, but the resolution is only whole units ( 1mtr is more than 3′). I used line length measurement to compare wire pair lengths from each end, this revealed that lines 1&2 were 4 metres shorter than the the other pairs…. result! The fault was approx 4metres (3-5mtr) along a new line which may have been stressed (by me) during installation. Using the tester alone allowed me roughly locate and plan access to join and replace just 5mtr of cable on a 20mtr run, but only because I was able to manually trace the cable from the outlet.

POE… This tester (the 851) doesn’t appreciate POE, and can’t test it. leads must be disconnected from the switch, hub etc before testing. A later model includes this function and has a specific port for POE testing, but I’ve only seen it in expensive kits. My review has ended up on both the 851 and 852 models

    desired Improvements-

The POE compatible unit is very similar, how about discontinuing this 851 model?
Cable tracing- Include option to Inject the signal to the shield
Improve test signal power when sending signal through all wires (more wires produce weaker signal)
Improve cable length resolution to 1 decimal when set in metres

It is simply easy to use and reliable. With this and other Klein tools, I was able to locate all the incomplete coax connections in my newly constructed home. Some coax lines were not connected at the wall plate, and all connections in the smart box were without RJ6 terminators.
