Powerful master chainThe volca mix is equipped with master effects powered by all-analog circuitry. In addition to an expander that broadens a mono source into a stereo sound image, thereâs a dynamic range compressor that compresses the high-frequency range according to level changes of the low-frequency region, as well as a side chain effect thatâs indispensable for dance music. Use these to dynamically vary the mix, adding a professional feel to live performances with the volca | DC out lets you use three volca units simultaneously.Three VOLCA DC OUT jacks are provided, and by connecting the included DC-DC cables you can supply power for up to three volca units. Even when using multiple volca units on stage, you wonât need to bother with adapters or bring another power strip; just concentrate on your performance with a streamlined setup and breakdown. | As the master of your volca live setup. The volca mix features an analog sync out jack that can easily be connected to many pieces of KORG gear for tempo sync, and also a play button and tempo knob to control that sync signal. By using the volca mix as the sync master device of your live setup, you can easily enhance your live performance, such as simultaneously playing sequences from multiple synced units, and combining mute and volume control to create performances that use your volca units in even more ingenious ways. | Sleek desktop stand for your KORG volcas. The volca rack 2×2 designed and built by SEQUENZ for KORG holds up to four volca modules Two durable aluminium trays hold the four volca units securely in place Easy-to-assemble design includes wooden side panels and aluminium frame. Volcas are great fun – chances are you have more than one, or none – there doesn’t seem to be a stage where you just have one of them. The Volca Mix is cute. It fits the form factor and offers power distribution for all three connected devices; the power supply and three flying leads are included but they’re a bit short. You also get three TRS jack leads.
If you consider the value of the PSU and leads as about 15% of the pack, you’re paying about 3x the cost of a basic passive mixer. What benefits are there?
1: clock generator and sync ports. That big display is for the tempo and you can send it to all your Volcas and other devices down the usual chain. If you switch on, then press play on all the synths, pressing play will start them all in sync.
2: Nice faders – yes, the faders are small, but they’re still far more controllable than little pots.
3: Send/return loop. This is really neat – but it could be better and it’s why I give it four stars. The sends are post-fader so if you fade or mute an instrument you fade the effected part too, and there are times when I would like to keep an effected sound and lose the dry mix. These things are small enough to just use effects inline, but it still seems like a curious design choice.
4: Stereo dynamics. Probably not of much use for recording, but great when messing around. The speakers in the unit are good enough for musical sketches, but the RCA jacks mean easy hook up to hifi, boom boxes and tape recorders. This setup plus an old Tascam four track? Lofi heaven.
5: Adjustable filter. Want to cut out the boom from competing instruments, or filter off some hiss? Here you go. Easy and simple to use.
Less-good features:
No battery power – unless you rig up something external this is not as portable as the instrument it works with.
No panning controls. The stereo dynamics is all you have, and that’s a weird mix of compression and EQ separating/boosting higher frequencies.
RCA jacks rather than balanced jacks. Yeah, I know, but if you want to use this in your studio you’ll be annoyed by these jacks. They do seem pretty free of noise though.
Does it work with instruments other than Volcas?
Yes. I particularly like it with the Modal Skulpt and CraftSYNTH 2.0, where the sync can be used as well.
Is the Volca mix worth it?
Yes. It is more expensive than basic mixing tools you might associate with cheaper instruments, but it’s very effective and works to bring a set of Volcas together in a very creatively-compatible way. The power distribution side is very neat, and the speaker sound isn’t awful – plus it helps spare a few channels on your desk. I don’t regret buying it at all, even though it could have been another Volva.
It’s brought a Mini KP2 into use that I’ve had no real application for for a decade, too – again, adding to the fun.
I’d give it five stars if it had pre-fade sends for the effects – or better yet, inserts on 3.5mm jacks – but that’s asking a lot for the price. If you have three Korg Volcas you want to take on the move, I highly recommend it – but if you can live without the clock source, some of the cheaper compact desktop mixers offer more for the same sort of price.
This is the condition a new product came to me. You have to be off your rocker to think I’d keep this.
It complies with everything it was said to do, now, it can give subtle hums if three Volcas are fed, so for recording I do not know if it is the most recommended. An option to pan the channels is missing (this would be the most serious absence / defect)
Bit of a learning curve but absolutely worth the money when you get it figured out! Been making music all day with this!
8/10 a little luck luster, works well with my other volcas and my behringer td-3
Essential for using Volcas for anything. The filter adds a lot of character. Ties it all together.
Overpriced – but works. If you must have a Volca sized (simple, limited feature mixer): than this is the one for you. I kept mine for the exact reasons…
For the price, if you have 3 volcas GET IT
Does what you’d want it to
Original Product in original packaging! Recommendation! Will buy from this seller again!
The handy power supply system. This powers all volca units and also mixes and controls with the new mounting systems it is a very compact and usable system
Yes, you can get a mixer with more channels, panning, etc. for cheaper…BUT this one has:
1) Power cables included to power 3 volcas.
2) Mute buttons for each track, which is perfect for live performance.
3) One knob eq, again, not everyone’s idea of a mixer BUT great for live performance.
4) Form factor: it fits nicely in your setup with your other volcas. Same shape and size.
5) Single one touch start/stop button for three Volcas to start at once. Again, handy if playing live.
It is not perfect, but it is what it is..a mixer for Volcas. It will not be an end all mixer, nor replace other small mixers I use for recording etc, but for live playing Volcas, it’s really a nice little device that will get your volcas sounding good together. (The expander and dynamic compressor are made for Volcas)
Why do I not give it five stars? No Midi. A midi sync would have been really nice for DAW recording or syncing other non-CV gate stuff. Also, I agree with others…where the heck is the panning? And while I like the “effects” I wish they would at least threw in a Delay or reverb. It does have a nice effects loop, but I like the compact design of JUST the volcas racked up.
(Hmmm…Maybe a “Volca Effect” is coming from Korg next year?)
ANyway, if you love Volcas as much as me, then you will probably enjoy this little mixer quite a bit. It’s worth the price, in my opinion.
Yes it could have more features, etc. But i
